Homes, golf course proposed DEER RIVER DEVELOPMENT WOULD BE LOCATED NEAR JOFFRE BY PAUL COWLEY ADVOCATE STAFF A 521-home development and golf course has been proposed for a scenic site overlooking the Red Deer River near Joffre. Lacombe County council got its first look at plans
for the Deer River development on Thursday. To be built in phases, the project will feature an 18-hole golf course, homes built in a cluster-style design along with public walking trails, picnic spots with river access. Council was told that the subdivision has been designed with an eye to maximizing the amount of natural area, including grasslands, tree stands and
picturesque slopes retained. Most of the lots at the site 10 km south of the Hamlet of Joffre will range in size from one-third of an acre to one acre, with 54 lots ranging from 1.5 to two acres.

MEMORIAL CUP
Rebels seek $400K from city for bid BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF The Red Deer Rebels hope the city will pitch in $400,000 to support their bid to host the Memorial Cup in 2016. If the bid is successful, it would be the second major sporting event to come to Red Deer over the next five years, the other being 2019 Canada Winter Games. At Monday’s regular meeting, Red Deer city council will debate a request for financial support from the Western Hockey League team. The team is bidding for the 2016 major junior national championship tournament, along with the Vancouver Giants. The Rebels have requested a cash contribution from the city in the form of a grant worth $200,000 and a guarantee of an additional $200,000 in 2016. If approved, the up-front cash contribution would be spread over two years with $100,000 coming from the 2015 operating reserve budget. This means the 2016 operating reserve budget would supply $300,000: $100,000 as the second part of the grant and the final $200,000. According to organizers, the 10-day event is estimated to generate an economic impact of about $17 million. A report to city councillors says that hosting the Memorial Cup will also assist in preparing the community for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. The Rebels previously bid to host the 2013 Memorial Cup. They asked for a guarantee of $300,000 from the city, which was provided. Saskatoon won the bid to host the event that year. The Memorial Cup features the champions of the three Canadian Hockey League components: the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League, plus the host city’s team.

Members of the Red Deer RCMP and Red Deer Emergency Services gathered in front of City Hall Thursday to honour all firefighters, emergency medical personnel and police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Both the Canadian and City of Red Deer flags were lowered to half mast, wreaths were laid and a minute of silence was observed.

even bigger impact for people in need in Central Alberta. “We have not identified a precise number for our goal. We didn’t want to limit our possibilities. We didn’t want to put a cap on them because every year we raise money and every year the gap between what we raise and what we need is still there. Our goal this year is to close that gap, to come closer and closer, said campaign co-chair Lynne Mulder at
