Local organization heads into recruitment campaign Big Brothers Big Sisters looks to gain 20 new mentors in 20 days

ig Brothers Big Sisters is about to launch their annual 20 Mentors in 20 Days mentor recruitment cam-

paign.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Lacombe and District Executive Director Crystal Zens said this year the campaign is more important than ever as the need for volunteers is greater than before. She added with the school year resuming, BBBS is already at their greatest need.

“It’s back to school, so that’s our biggest need for mentors.”

Zens said there are a number of reasons why BBBS needs more mentors this year. They have expanded their programming into Eckville and the Blackfalds program has grown considerably this year as well, even having its own office space at Blackfalds FCSS. She added each year BBBS receives more referrals and there are always a few mentors lost because of changing life situations liking moving to other locations.

BBBS Case Worker Karissa Zuidhof said she already has 12 young boys in Lacombe waiting for mentors in the traditional program and that is before school referrals have begun to come in, so there is always a growing need for mentors.

“There is a big need already,” said Zuidhof. “There is always more that we need.”

Although the campaign is called 20 Mentors in 20 Days, Zens said they are hoping for more - between 30 and 40 mentors - this year.

Currently, BBBS is in need of in school mentors particularly. Zens said the in school mentorship program is a good way for beginner mentors to become familiar with the program as well.

It is only one hour a week for the length of the school year and there are many supports.

“It’s a great place to start,” said Zens.

“You are in a team environment in the school and the schools are very supportive.”

For the in school mentoring program a lot of the work is taken care of by BBBS. Zens said the organization provides the activities and the space, all mentors need to do is be available and show up. She went on to say many mentors who have joined the in school mentorship program have moved into the traditional program because they have enjoyed it so much.

Zens also said the matching process for Lacombe and District has a high success rate. She added the training process for volunteer mentors is very in depth so

mentors know exactly what they are getting into.

“They go in with their eyes wide open, and that’s before they are ever matched with a child,” said Zens.

Once volunteers are matched, they continue to get support from BBBS. Zuidhof said that a few ‘mentoring mentors’ workshop sessions are held each year.

These opportunities enable mentors to get advice from other mentors and also promotes networking between mentors.

“Sometimes when you are in it, it’s easy to feel alone,” said Zuidhof. “But when you join a team of mentors who are already mentoring, it becomes easier.”

This campaign runs for 20 days, but Zens said she and the rest of the BBBS team like to begin recruiting earlier and continue to have some events after the 20 days as well. There is also nothing stopping anyone from signing up outside of this recruitment campaign.

While the campaign doesn’t officially kick off until Sept. 16th, Zens said BBBS has already started raising awareness for the program. They had a presence at the recent Active Living Fair this past Tuesday and are planning to be at upcoming Farmers’ Markets in Lacombe and Blackfalds.

Once the campaign really gets underway there will be a number of events where the organization will be putting themselves in the public and doing their best to recruit more mentors. Zens said that they plan once again to run lemonade stands this year, with locations in Blackfalds, Lacombe, Bentley and Eckville starting Sept 25th.

Also happening again this year starting that same day is the Corporate Pie Giveaway in Blackfalds and Lacombe where BBBS gives pies to local business.

Zens said this is usually a successful part of the campaign, usually resulting in a few new businesses joining the mentorship program and encouraging mentorship among their employees.

Throughout the campaign, the organization will also have a presence on social media. Zens said they are planning to have some giveaways and small contests through facebook to help spread the word about their programs.

As part of the 20 Mentors in 20 Days campaign, BBBS will also be doing some things to promote United Way, who supports the in school mentorship program.

City makes decision on arena renovations

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombe Council has finally reached a decision on the Barnett Arena/ Kinsmen Aquatic Centre repairs, renovations and upgrades.

After taking their meeting in-camera for several minutes, council reopened chambers to the public on Sept. 8th and voted to proceed with the renovations to the leisure complex, following a modified version of Option 1.

Councillor Reuben Konnik made the motion to proceed with Option 1, an option that addressed only the code issues in the building and did not include additional expansion.

Konnik later amended his motion to modify Option 1 slightly, including some expansion to the building’s lobby as well as the swimming pool’s chemical and mechanical rooms.

Konnik has been very vocal with his disappointment regarding the cost of the necessary renovations to the building, saying in

previous meetings that he doesn’t understand how addressing code issues, like adding a sprinkler system and improving fire exits, can cost upwards of $10 million and mentioned previously the City is going to build a police station for around $7 million.

As such, Konnik has been adamant that he would support only Option 1.

He said that while he was disappointed the renovations would cost so much, he also understood they were necessary.

“Option 1 is all about bringing the building up to code and I think everyone in council agrees that’s important,” said Konnik after the meeting. “The thing I’ve struggled with since day one is the numbers involved.”

Konnik said that meeting code in the leisure complex was necessary to maintain and extend the life of the building, an important facility in Lacombe. He added that the high cost was also his reasoning for not supporting Option 2.

Mayor Steve Christie was

the only member of council to vote against Konnik’s motion.

He said that he is pleased that at least something is being done to further the project, but is disappointed council has not opted to expand the facilities at Barnett Arenas and the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre.

“I’m elated that we are moving forward on that,” said Christie. “That we are moving forward on bringing the building up to code, that we are going to continue using that building, that we aren’t going to shut down pieces of it and not use pieces of it. But I think if we’re going to spend that amount of money, why not do it right? It’s worth the extra money.”

Christie added he is not opposed to a new regional facility, something that was suggested as an alternative to renovating the Barnett Arena/Kinsmen Aquatic Centre, but wants to use the existing facility to its fullest potential in the meantime.

“I couldn’t support shutting down portions of (the

existing) building and then moving into another one.”

Councillor Wayne Rempel was one of the councillors who supported Option 2 for the renovations, but on Monday he voted in favour of Konnik’s motion.

Rempel said he has not changed his mind, but realized council as a whole would not support Option 2 and wanted to at least move forward with the project.

“We only had one thing to vote on, Option 1 to go ahead, or not to go ahead (at all),” said Rempel. “I don’t feel that for us to not do (any renovations) was the right thing to do.”

While council has made a decision regarding which option to proceed with for renovations, the renovations themselves have not been completely approved and nothing is set in stone.

Community Services Coordinator Brenda Vaughn said that the next step is to approach builders for costing of the project. Vaughn said while the City received fairly reliable numbers and drawings from its engineering consultant Stantec, more accurate information regarding cost and drawings is needed before the project can proceed. news@lacombeexpress.com

Gord Bamford cleans up at CCMAs After the Canadian Country Music Awards this past Sunday, Lacombe country artist Gord Bamford can add three new accolades to his name.

Bamford took three awards at the CCMAs including Single of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and Country Music Program or Special of the Year.

“It never gets old to win an award,” said Bamford. “It makes you realize that the fans, Canadian country radio and the industry are watching what you’re doing and that they approve. I am having the time of my life and feel that my music is just getting started. Once again, I’m humbled by this recognition.”

Country Junkie, the sixth studio album from Bamford was launched in October of

last year and received a Juno award nomination for Country Album of the Year in March. It also garnered Bamford his first ever number one single When Your Lips Are So Close. The album debuted in the number one spot on the Nielsen Soundscan Top Country Albums Chart. Bamford co-wrote 13 of the 14 songs on the album and produced it with legendary Nashville-based songwriter Byron Hill.

Red Deer wins bid to host 2019 Canada Winter Games Blackfalds’ Abbey Centre to host badminton competitions during event

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Red Deer is indeed ‘ready’ as the City has successfully landed the bid to host the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

“What an exciting day this is a defining moment for Red Deer and Red Deerians,” said Mayor Tara Veer moments following the announcement in Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame at Canada Olympic Park on Sept. 4th.

“In all sincerity, this victory really does belong to the people of Red Deer.”

Veer added that the rally on Aug. 22nd also helped fuel the momentum behind the City’s success. “Demonstrating their community pride and supporting our Games bid - that helped secure it for us. It’s really a transformative moment in the life of our community.”

Veer laughed as she explained how in the moments prior to the official announcement, she had been holding Red Deer Bid Committee Chair Lyn Radford’s hand so tightly that, “By the time I got up to make the speech, I literally couldn’t feel my arm. But when we heard the City of Red Deer announced, I felt this deep sense of honour and gratitude. It’s really a defining moment in the life of our City and I’m incredibly proud of the people of Red Deer. It was that ‘sea of red’ who secured this for our City.”

Canada Games Council representatives were among several local and regional politicians who attended the long-awaited announcement.

The Canada Winter Games is slated for February of 2019. A host community can expect to accommodate 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers; 1,500 technical representatives and officials; 450 media and broadcast personnel and 25,000 visitors over the 17-days of competition.

The opportunity to host these Games comes to the province every 20 years – the last time Alberta had the opportunity was 1995 when Grande Prairie was selected.

In 1975, the honours went to Lethbridge.

“Our bid committee will now transition into a ‘Host Society’ where the planning and preparations for 2019 will begin,” said Veer.

“The best is yet to come.”

Radford pointed out how much the Games will mean to the community.

“Our community will be able to build up some facilities, we will get an influx of cash. It will be unbelievable how we can leverage that money. The young people in our community will also receive a legacy of learning to give – and what it means to work together as a community, and I don’t think you can beat that.

“I am a firm believer that what tipped things over to our favour was the rally on August 22nd. The people that came out and supported that - the hundreds of messages posted to social media – that really showed Red Deer was engaged.”

Officials said it was a tight competition between Red Deer and Lethbridge, who both presented strong cases to host the Games.

“The 2019 bid evaluation process was thorough and competitive,” said Tom Quinn, chair of the Canada Games Council. “Both communities put forth an impressive bid to host the Games and everyone involved from both communities should be proud of what they accomplished,” he said. “It was tremendously rewarding for the Canada Games to see the movement alive and active in both communities.”

Meanwhile, local provincial politicians were also thrilled with the news.

Cal Dallas, MLA for Red Deer South, said he always thinks of the volunteers who also put so much energy into the bid process.

“We’re all so proud of them in Red Deer.

“It’s a high stakes game – lots that is very important to the future of Red Deer was wrapped up in this selection. It’s a great day to celebrate, but I know that starting next week there will be a lot of volunteers thinking about what the next steps are and getting organized.

“It’s also a huge incentive for new volunteers to step forward, whether they are folks in Red Deer who have considerable experience volunteering with major events or new people who have settled in our community and want to be a part of this. I’m really looking forward to that next chapter.”

Flying Club looks to address future maintenance

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Lacombe Flying Club is taking a proactive approach to maintaining the Lacombe Airport.

At a meeting on Sept. 8th, Lacombe City council heard a presentation from Dave Scott, vice president of the Lacombe Flying Club, outlining the Club’s five-year plan for maintenance of the Lacombe Airport.

In his presentation, Scott outlined several maintenance concerns that will need to be addressed within the next few years at the airport. He said that none of the issues should pose immediate concerns, but that the Club would need some capital investment when it came time to address these issues and wished to begin such dialogue with the City early.

“I’m not here tonight with our hand out looking

for funds,” said Scott.

Instead, Scott said that what the Club hoped to do was have a representative from the City work with the Club to see what it would take to move such projects forward.

Lacombe Flying Club operates and maintains the Lacombe Airport on behalf of the City, said Scott. He added that this is all done through volunteer work and typically the Club has asked for little to no aid from the City for its operations.

“Over the years, we haven’t asked for anything,” said Scott. We bought our own tractor to mow our own grass, we blow our own snow.”

Scott added that he doesn’t see this changing, but said that some of the forthcoming projects are beyond the scope of the Club.

Most of the projects that are part of the flying Club’s

five-year plan are regarding repairs and replacements due to wear and aging equipment. Scott outlined these projects in his presentation, explaining to council why they were necessary to ensure the longevity of the airport.

Such projects include lifting the existing runway to avoid further wear and subsequent damage, replacing fuel tanks that have reached their lifespan and replacing the old technology runway lights (which are currently working, but need extensive regular maintenance to remain so) with LED or solarpowered lights.

After the presentation, councillors were invited to ask questions of Scott, and Councillor Reuben Konnik wanted to know if the Flying Club did any kind of fundraising, citing how successful it has been for other community groups like FCSS. Konnik added

that several other airports in Alberta host drag races on their runways as fundraisers and suggested the Lacombe Flying Club consider doing the same.

Scott said that the Club had, as yet, not done much fundraising outside of the annual Fly-In Drive-In Breakfast. He added that

Konnik’s drag racing idea was, “A great idea” and he would bring it forward to the rest of the Club.

Mayor Steve Christie added that the City has slated a facility review of the airport for 2015 so the timing was excellent to receive such a report.

Further delays in hunting death case

BY ERIN FAWCETT Lacombe Express The case of a Lacombe resident accused of shooting a man during a hunting trip in 2009 has had further delays.

The trial for Herbert Meister, who is charged with criminal negligence using a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and criminal negligence causing death, was expected to take place last week. Last Thursday, his lawyer Balfour Der, said Meister was expected to make a plea, but because of a change in the crown prosecutor’s office, more time was needed to ensure both himself and the new crown had all of the information needed to proceed. Crown Prosecutor Robin Snider was previously assigned the case, which has now been handed to Bina Border.

On Monday, a new date for resolution was set. The case will now be heard on Nov. 4th.

The hunting incident in which the charges stem from took place on Nov. 29th, 2009. At the time police said a group of four males from the Bentley and Lacombe area, were hunting deer on a heavily wooded field, about 13 kms northwest of Bentley. All four were hunting in different locations on the same property, which was owned by one of the hunters. RCMP said one of the shooters believed he saw a deer about 300 metres down a cut line and took a shot with a .308 calibre rifle.

Police said the hunter waited one minute, saw more movement and fired a second shot. At this time he heard a “very strange” noise and knew something was wrong, said RCMP. The hunter raced to the site to find his hunting partner suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. OPINION Remembering 9/11 It’s difficult to believe that it’s been 13 years since the tragic events of Sept.

11, 2001 when terrorists slammed planes into New York City’s World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Sept. 11th remains one of those dates where people of all ages recall where they were when they heard the devastating news.

Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day, which many have described as a bleak turning point in society as well – we live with the impact of 9/11 in so many ways today. It’s one of those events in history that we will never really move on from.

As international tensions continue to currently rise, it causes one to reflect on that day even more. How far have we really come since then? It seems that people in general are more fearful these days, and it’s hard not to be when so much of the news is taken up by stories about the lat-

est conflicts overseas.

Remnants of the attacks remain today – people in general are perhaps more suspicious, more sensitive to news of potential threats to national security. Border securities are tighter, even something relatively routine as flying is certainly more of a security hassle which is understandable and overall, much more patience is required. The screening process of even visiting the United States is far more stringent than it used to be – and there really is no going back. The world of pre-9/11 will never return.

Today, the 9/11 memorial in New York City is visited by thousands everyday – a testament to how impactful this event was.

The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America.

According to the Memorial web site, one of the many ways to honour those

who perished in the tragedy is to observe a moment of silence at key moments, including 8:46 a.m. which is when hijackers crashed Flight 11 into floors 93 through 99 of the North Tower.

At 9:03 a.m. hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into floors 77

through 85 of the south tower. At 9:37 a.m. they also crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, near Washington, D.C. The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, and it’s a powerful remind-

I recently visited Southern California – after years of wanting to check out the sites and sounds of that magical place known as ‘Tinseltown’ in particular.

With myriads of other excited tourists, I dove into what Hollywood and Los Angeles have to offer – super attractions, great weather, cool tourist sites and of course the ubiquitous Palm trees.

I also found Angelinos to be very friendly and helpful all the way through. Even driving on the dreaded Los Angeles freeways and thoroughfares wasn’t nearly as ‘scary’ as I had imagined.

What was troubling was seeing shop signs for guns.

It’s a country that, for the most part, stands resolutely behind its ‘right to bear arms’. That belief, which is so ingrained in American culture as far as I can tell, pretty much quashes, time and again, calls for serious and substantial reform when it comes to toughening up gun control measures.

And with such freedom when it comes to owning weapons, it should really come as little surprise that violence connected to guns is a constant.

Driving this whole point home

WEBER even further was the recent death of a shooting instructor in Arizona.

News reports say he was accidentally shot and killed by a nine-yearold girl who he was teaching to fire an automatic Uzi submachine gun.

The gun allegedly fired after it recoiled in the girl’s hands.

There are so many disturbing aspects to this story, it’s hard to know where to start. First of all – who on earth feels the need to have their child educated on learning how to use this type of weapon – or any weapon for that matter?

It’s bad enough we have adults freely learning how to run around with access to these things, but kids? I cannot fathom any parent even wanting their child to be around these kinds of weapons, not to mention even being around a shooting range – period.

But again, it speaks to a very individualistic culture where people are taught from day one that it is their fundamental, God-given right

to own a weapon. It’s simply their ‘right.’

To those of us who live in countries where gun control is far more stringent, it’s outrageous.

The accident in Arizona naturally sparked another round of gun safety talks in the U.S. but it’s doubtful much will change. My sense from reading stories about what happened is that while everyone of course acknowledges what happened as a terrible tragedy, there doesn’t appear to be much of a desire to abruptly change the status quo. It’s a politically-charged issue with powerful lobbyists constantly going on about those ‘rights’.

Unfortunately, few politicians who privately disagree have the stomach to fight back.

The argument goes something like this – it’s not about the guns, it’s about who is handling the gun.

The ‘gun’ is just a neutral piece of equipment, but put it in the hands of a crazy person, well, of course its deadly potential escalates.

I’m not sure how lobbyists continually finds ways to defend their stance on guns. We are always hearing about shootings in the U.S. Again, little changes. There are promises to review the standards

and policies, but we all know where those kinds of vague commitments end up.

With this shooting in Arizona, one wonders what the response will be. No doubt there will be more excuses and the whole issue will fade as time passes. And really, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of hope for change anyways at least in some parts of the country – consider the state of Georgia which recently implemented a new opencarry gun law earlier this summer.

It has reportedly granted licensed gun owners the ability to carry their weapons in many previously off-limit areas. This includes bars, restaurants, nightclubs, churches, some government buildings, certain zones in primary and secondary schools and non-secure sections of Atlanta’s airport. Wow. Just think, you could be sitting in a church sanctuary surrounded by a bunch of gun-carrying people.

As I mentioned, I didn’t feel unsafe in the U.S. But knowing you are in a place where gun ownership is prevalent makes a person think a bit differently about a vacation – no matter how many charming things there are about the locale in general. editor@reddeerexpress.com

Woman shares story of living with schizophrenia The Open Hearts and Minds Walk is set for Sept. 13th in Red Deer

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Pamela Trufyn experienced her first psychosis at a very young age with little to no understanding of what a schizo-affective disorder could even mean – all she knew was that she was scared and confused.

From 1996 to 2010, Trufyn experienced multiple diagnoses and symptoms ranging from depression to hallucinations to elated, anxious habits to a heavy sometimes paralyzing - fear of causing people around her pain. It wasn’t until 2010 that she was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder and began to reap the benefits of a chemically balanced brain.

“Schizo means split – that doesn’t mean split personality. It means I’m

split between positive and negative symptoms of psychosis,” explained Trufyn.

“The affective part of that means that I have a mood disorder. I come up and I’m pretty good but when I come down it’s like I’m crashing into a very deep depression.”

Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that is not completely understood much like many brain disorders.

There are varying degrees, forms and factors that come into play with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (or related diagnoses). Symptoms are classified as being positive, negative or cognitive.

Positive symptoms are things can be seen or heard and can be described as something that a person without a disorder would not have. The most com-

Negative symptoms are things that are lacking in a person with schizophrenia that would not be lacking from a healthy brain. An example is having no tone or facial expression while speaking.

A person can show signs of positive and negative or even cognitive symptoms, which give them a ‘split’ diagnosis, explained Trufyn.

“I didn’t realize I was sick. My parents saw me

doing things that I wouldn’t normally do if I were well. Examples were that I wasn’t eating because I thought I’d have to pay for everything I ate. There were so many different things going on in my mind – like I’d have to pay for everything I consumed and I didn’t have that money, or that I was being prepared for a celebration.

“My mind gets full. I heard about the disaster in Haiti and thought it was my fault because I was evil.

When I’m in a state of psychosis, I feel like anything bad in the world is my fault.”

Trufyn grew up battling bouts of depression and trying to carry herself through stages of psychosis. She talked about being obsessed with religion and religious ‘signs’ and going

off of her medication because she thought she was doing well. Trufyn said she make attempts at taking her own life before she was comfortable telling her doctor about some of the more major symptoms and thoughts she was having, which ultimately led to her successful diagnosis.

“From 1996 to 2014, there has been a lot that’s happened but I’ve realized I’m a person who lives with a diagnosis of schizo-affective disorder and experiences these things. I started at the society (Schizophrenia Society of Alberta) as a volunteer and people understood me. They saw things in me that I couldn’t see for myself – things that I was good at,” smiled Trufyn.

“I’m good at talking with people here and sharing in their lives. I was offered

this position with peer support. Through talking to people in our groups, I saw that I shared experiences with (other people with similar diagnoses) too, and maybe this is an illness that other people experience too and it’s not a fault of my own.”

Last year, she attended the Open Hearts and Minds Walk (presented by the Schizophrenia Society) for the first time. It will take place again this year on Sept. 13th at Mackenzie Trail in Red Deer. The goal, Trufyn explained, is to get out and meet people who live with this diagnosis, and show support for them in their struggles.

FREDEEN 1880s with his wife and family. He was ordained in 1892 and came to Lacombe on June 11th, 1893. Very early in his ministry he was preaching and performing other church-related duties in three different fields of which the Lacombe field alone embraced five locations - Spruceville, Fairview, Milton, Turville and Blindman.

Present day ministers are not unfamiliar with two or three point charges

but the roads and mode of travel today bear no resemblance to the saddlebag days of Fernie.

All of Fernie’s charges prospered and the search begun before his arrival for a site to construct a church and manse resulted in the church dedicated Oct. 11th, 1893. He had an active role in its construction but a manse would not be built for many years.

Instead, the house built

by Fernie served that purpose. This was the first lumber dwelling constructed west of the hamlet, the present day footprint of Mae Thompson’s home.

He named his huge house ‘Woodlea’. It crowned the hill and was designed to accommodate the congregation, indeed any and

all residents, for religious services and to serve as a stopping place for saddlebag missionaries, among them Father Lacombe, that passed through.

No church prospered in those days and construction of the Presbyterian Church which began in 1895 left a string of promissory notes in its wake.

Session minutes recorded several instances when Fernie was asked return the ‘promissory note as it could not be paid’. In lieu of pay he was to receive ‘all loose and envelope collections except for amounts necessary to pay for other operating expenses’.

Sam Watt, an elder of the board and representative of the community of Spruceville was the successful bidder for construction of the church. Somewhere along the line he locked horns with Fernie and the latter voiced objections when Watt was chosen Jan. 19th, 1897 as chairman of the board. Indeed, he appealed to Presbytery in Edmonton

to bar Watt from the holding of any office. Presbytery obliged by ordering Watt to appear before Kirk Session to answer charges brought against him.

Managers who sided with Watt circulated a petition for funds which read in part, “We whose names are hereto subscribed promise to pay weekly the sums set opposite our names during the year April 1st, 1897 to March 30th 1898 - but in so doing be it distinctly understood that the present incumbent resigns or is removed.”

The nature of the charges against Watt were never disclosed. Minutes of Session the Presbytery and the Conference were all mum on this issue and its aftermath but it was Fernie, not Watt, who was barred from holding any office with the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

He resigned in April 1897 but the year he left Lacombe could not be determined from records currently available.

The City of Lacombe reminds residents not to pour used cooking oils, fats, or food grease down the sink, but to store them in a disposable container, and place it out for regular garbage collection. Residents who are disposing of four or more litres of used cooking oil can take it directly to the Prentiss LandďŹ ll, located to the east of Lacombe.

Contrary to popular belief, running hot water and soap down the drain will not help break down the oils or grease; it only pushes the grease further down the sewer pipe. As the grease cools and solidiďŹ es, blockages can occur in the sewer line on private property or in the municipal sewer system.

St. Andrew’s United Church to be Lacombe’s Vrst Municipal Heritage Resource The City of Lacombe is pleased to announce that St. Andrew’s United Church is the ďŹ rst building to be designated as a Municipal Heritage Resource under the City’s Heritage Management Plan. “The Heritage Management Plan establishes the process for undertaking the designation and preservation of heritage buildings and properties,â€? said Councillor Peter Bouwsema, who serves on the Heritage Resources Committee. “It also provides information on available federal, provincial, and municipal ďŹ nancial incentives, and the application process for the alteration of Municipal Historic Resources.â€? “Once a building or site is designated as a Municipal Historic Resource, that building or site will be preserved and protected,â€? said City Planner Jennifer Kirchner. “The key character deďŹ ning elements of the designated building are to be protected, and any alterations must be approved by the Heritage Resources Committee through a formal application process.â€?

St. Andrew’s United Church is located at 5226-51 Street in downtown Lacombe. The building was built in 1908-1909 on the corner of 53 Street and 51 Avenue. Designed in the Gothic Revival-style, this red brick church is an example of Lacombe’s high quality architecture. The church originally served the Presbyterian community of Lacombe. In 1922, upon the merger of the Methodist and Presbyterian congregations, it became the home of the newly formed United Church.

Council has also adopted a Heritage Bylaw to facilitate the implementation of the Heritage Management Plan, which supports the conservation and celebration of Lacombe’s built heritage. The Heritage Bylaw addresses the following:

• Establishes the Heritage Resources Committee as a Committee of Council.

• Establishes the Committee’s Terms of Reference • Creates a Heritage Resources Fund which will be used to support heritage conservation and to implement the Heritage Management Plan.

• Create a grant program which will support conservation and preservation of Municipal Historic Resources. The Committee will be authorized to award grants to Municipal Historic Resources on behalf of Council.

A designation ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on September 28, 2014, at St. Andrew’s United Church to oďŹƒcially mark its designation as a Municipal Heritage Resource.

Hunting & Fishing Connecting with nature is at the core of fly fishing Fly fishing can be defined in many ways to different people.

Some people define it as a hobby or pastime. Some get more serious and define it as art, a lifestyle, passion or livelihood. In my experience one tends to lead to the other.

Fawcett So what is fly fishing? A search on the Internet will bring you a definition like this one – ‘fly fishing is an angling method, where the angler uses an almost weightless fly attached to a special weighted line in order to catch fish.’ This is about as cut and dry as you can get, although true it has a narrow scope. Fly fishing is much, much more than that. Fly fishing is a rhythm, a connection with nature and water; a slower more methodical way of fishing.

It is relaxing and exhilarating.

Fly fishing is frustrating, yet rewarding. It can also be intimidating. The motion and timing

have a learning curve and takes time and practice. Some compare the cast to a golf swing; every cast is different - some are great, others need work. Fly fishing may take a lifetime to master, but you can learn the basics of casting motion and timing in an afternoon or two.

First things first. If you are thinking about taking up fly fishing, you will need some equipment. Starter packages are available for a variety of price ranges and options. For around Central Alberta you will want a 5 or 6wt rod with matching reel and line. Echo and Temple Fork Outfitters both offer great inexpensive packages to start. They will run you $200-$300 roughly.

I would recommend casting lessons, an instructional DVD or the very least some YouTube research. I would also recommend starting on still water to get the feel for casting. The water current adds a whole new element that can be dealt with later. A few places that stand out in town for learning are Bower Ponds and the Waskasoo Pond which is close to Heritage Ranch. Both have large open areas for back cast-

ing (watch for pedestrians) and both have fish. Bower Ponds has a healthy pike population that entered the ponds in a flood a number of years back. You will need wire leader or thick monofilament 40lb+ to catch them. Waskasoo Pond is a stocked pond with rainbow trout.

Exploring fly fishing has shown me some of the most beautiful places I have seen. It can be an addition to many other activities due to its lightweight and compact pack size. It’s ideal

to go along with activities such as hiking, camping, road trips, travelling home from out of town work, vacations, picnics, day trips and more. There are some amazing places to see and fish in and around Central Alberta with many species to target including brown, rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout, a species of char known as Bull trout.

Fishers can also try and hook a Northern Pike (jack fish), walleye (pickerel), goldeye,

Some of my favourites to fish for are pike and trout. Pike are super aggressive, get big and can be found all over. Some great places to hit are Buffalo Lake, Cow Lake, Jack Fish Lake, Bower Ponds, the Red Deer River and the Blindman River. Pike like bright colours and erratic retrieves. You can also fish them on top with poppers and other surface flies.

Trout are amazing because they live in amazing places. Ram River comes to mind and always the Bow River has world-class brown trout fishing that’s well known.

Stocked ponds like Dickson Trout Pond, and Waskasoo Pond can provide some good fishing and easy access. Some less known places I like to fish for trout include the North Raven River, Shunda Creek and Abraham Lake just past Nordegg.

Exploring wilderness and connecting with nature are at the core of fly fishing. Have fun, fish barbless and practice catch and release.

Officials remind hunters to be ethical, safe and responsible

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Hunting season is here and every hunter has the right to recreation but ought to be aware of the responsibilities that they need to carry out, officials say.

To be a responsible, ethical hunter a person needs to be aware of which area they plan to hunt, be confident in their ability to handle their weapon, and understand the need to obtain proof of all certification needed to hunt and tag that specific animal.

“The Fish & Wildlife associations are all good and knowledgeable but we prefer people come to us so that we can be sure the information they’re getting is reliable,” said Information Officer Craig Brown who works in Alberta Environment Sustainable Resources Development.

“The regulations are complicated and we have no trouble explaining them

to people.”

Alberta is divided into five different hunting regions, so step number one when planning a trip is to visit www.albertaregulations.com and figure out which region you’re planning to travel to, as this determines the type of game that can be hunted.

Within each of those five regions, there are numbers that correspond to a division of the region, called a Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) – for example, the area surrounding Red Deer is WMU 220.

On the Alberta regulations page, if you find your region and click on the number, a small detailed map will come up that tells where boundaries for that area are.

Central Alberta falls within the Parkland Division. Animals that can be hunted here include whitetailed deer, mule deer, moose, elk and game birds that include partridge, grouse (some species),

pheasant, geese and ducks.

“To get started hunting in Alberta, the first thing I would recommend doing is taking an Alberta hunter education course done by the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association, known commonly as AHEIA. That course is available online and in classrooms,” said Brown.

“Next thing you’ll need is a WIN card – wildlife identification number. They’re done through Alberta Realm – the cost for them is $8 and they’re good for five years. After that, you’re going to need a wildlife certificate that costs $28.22.”

Once a person has met the regulations for the above-mentioned certifications, they are able to begin purchasing tags for each animal that is hunted. Each tag is specific to an animal and is placed according to regulations.

“Then you look at the Alberta regions list for what is available. The chart can be a little bit hard to dissect

on your own, but this is the general idea.”

According to what number you’re in, you must look at the time (darkest green) so that you can make yourself aware of what animals are safe to hunt at a time as well as what weapon can be used.

Anywhere you see black boxes beside the dates on the Alberta Regulations department that means a person must enter a draw to be able to hunt that specified animal within the dates given.

“PAL/POL is a possession acquisition license – basically, your license to purchase firearms and ammunition. If people want information on that, they can look into the Canadian Firearms Centre.

“For bow and arrow hunting, you’re going to need a bow permit and those can be purchase through realm account $9.20,” said Brown.

“Also, a bow and arrow is not the same as hunting

with a crossbow which is considered to be a firearm.

Brown said that licensing for game bird is a little bit different than big game.

Game birds in Alberta include a few different species that are grouped categorically. Hunting any of these animals will require a WIN card and a wildlife certificate.

Bird game in Alberta is a little bit trickier, said Brown. Migratory game birds such as duck and geese require a game bird license and a federal migratory bird license that can be acquired at most Canada Post Offices.

For upland animals such as partridge and grouse, a game bird license is required. To hunt pheasant a person must acquire a

game bird license and a pheasant license.

“If you’re not 100 per cent sure of the species you’re shooting at is what you have a tag for, do not fire. I will always tell people that if you aren’t sure, don’t shoot.”

He also advised hunters to remember there are other kinds of wildlife where they may be hunting that they ought to be aware of.

Responsible hunting does not end with permits and weapon awareness. It also means taking home the game that was killed or disposing of it the right way.

Any game meat that is being donated to a food bank must be inspected by a licensed butcher and cut and packaged according to Alberta safety regulations.

Slo-pitch tournament is set for Blackfalds

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express All-Star Park will host a bevy of slo-pitch teams for a tournament weekend organized by the Chiefs team from Blackfalds.

The event is set to run Sept.

19th to 21st. Sixty-four teams will compete against each other over three days, with the top teams of the four divisions guaranteeing a spot at the 2015 Slo-Pitch National in Kamloops. One hundred and fifty-six games will be played through the weekend, with playoffs happening on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m.

“The teams are playing for $10,000 with money going to 16 teams. The teams are broken into four divisions, A through D, with the top four teams from each di-

vision automatically qualifying for the national championships,” said Rory Napier, manager of the Chiefs and organizer of the tournament weekend.

The winning team in Division A gets $1,500, second place gets $1,000 and the third and fourth placed teams will each get $750.

There is $4,000 of prize money to be won for Division A, $3,000 in Division B, $2,000 in Division C and $1,000 in Division D. Amid the many games of ball there will be a concession, an open cabaret on Saturday night for adults, a kids’ zone, weekend camping for team members, raffles, 50/50 draws and more.

“We’ve got a 35 foot high inflatable slide, a bouncy castle, an inflatable obstacle course for the kids. We’ve also got a face painter

out there all weekend, and Peppermint Andy’s mobile ice cream parlour coming out to the park,” said Napier. “The cabaret is an open air cabaret in the beer gardens with DJs and music. It’s somewhere for the teams to go after they’re done playing. We’ve got a concession with the usual foods and some breakfast foods and things like that.”

On Saturday night shortly after 8 p.m., all teams will participate in a huge ice-bucket challenge, during which they will accept donations from park attendees for a cheque to be cut to the ALS Canada Society on Monday morning.

“We will have between 500 and 700 people that will be on the soccer field to do this challenge and we’ve got the Blackfalds fire department involved and they’re go-

ing to soak us with their big water cannon. We’re going to have two representatives that have black buckets, and people are going to donate whatever they can.”

Napier said that the plan is to get as many people involved with the challenge as possible with the hope that this event could maybe even break a record for the number of people involved in a single challenge.

This is the fourth year of the Annual Chiefs Slo-Pitch tournament, with each year growing more than the last. Napier adds that there are three tournaments each year, with the final one in September. “Next year, we’ll be giving away $7,500 in May, $10,000 in July and $15,000 in September.”

“I’ve been a ballplayer for 25 years. It’s a chance for teams to get out and have some fun with other teams. The first games start Friday at 6 p.m. The kids stuff won’t be going until Saturday morning at 8 a.m. but everything else will be rocking and rolling Friday night.”

Margrit de Graff golden at Canada 55+ Summer Games

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Age is no reason to stop being active for Margrit de Graff.

Returning from the Canada 55+ Summer Games in Strathcona County the last week of August with two gold medals in cycling, the 87-year-old woman said she was pleased her hard work and training had paid off, but was a little surprised at the outcome of the races, especially because of her age.

“I have never, in my whole life, gone into competitions expecting to win,” said de Graff. “I was always hoping, but I don’t have to win.” de Graff said that many people confuse her for a competitive person because she has competed (and continues to compete) in so many sporting events throughout her life.

However, she said she only does them for the fun of it and to stay active.

Staying active is very important to de Graff. She said she attributes her longevity to constant physical activity throughout her life and eating wholesome, nutritious food (de Graff’s other hobby is gardening and she said her garden provides most of her produce in the spring and summer months). de Graff added she avoids unhealthy

habits like smoking and excessive drinking.

Another reason de Graff enjoys competing so much is because it gives her a goal, a reason to be active.

She said she would not have mounted her bike and rode nearly as often this summer if she had not been training for the Canada 55+ Summer Games. As it was, de Graff trained all summer for the competition, spending about an hour each day on her bicycle. de Graff competed in two races in the Games, the 10km and the 20km.

She said she won the 10km quite easily with a time of 28:24:21.

As for the 20km, de Graff said it was much more difficult.

“It was quite tough,” said de Graff. She added that she had complications during the race as the chain fell off her bicycle about 7 kms in.

After a long and “enjoyable” downhill, de Graff was forced to coast to a stop and pull off on the side of the course to repair her bike.

A passing motorist offered to help her, but de Graff only accepted a tissue to wipe the grease off her hands.

By the time she was finished fixing the bike, de Graff was quite

disheartened. All of her competitors had passed her and she did not think she would be able to catch up.

“They were all gone.”

However, when de Graff came up on one of the other cyclists and overtook him, she was spurred on to continue the race with new vigor.

When she crossed the finish line, she learned she had won her second gold medal.

“I was really surprised when I came in first again,” said de Graff.

Strictly speaking, de Graff did not qualify for the Games.

Technically, only gold medalists from provincial competitions are entitled to compete and when she competed in the Alberta Games last summer de Graff received a bronze, she said.

Yet, she was invited to compete still because of her dedication to staying active at any age, something that the 55+ Games exist to promote. de Graff even obtained a sponsorship for the Games, with her $4,000 bicycle being provided

by United Cycle in Edmonton.

Rams start the season with something to build on

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Last week, the Lacombe Composite High School Rams fought hard in their season opener against the Notre Dame Cougars kicking off the season with a loss on their shoulders but a goal in mind.

The team’s offence pulled together to play a strong second half but the Cougars were able to secure a win with a score of 23-14.

“I think everything we wanted to do, we did in the second half,” said Rams Head Coach Riley Quance.

“In the first half, we made

a couple of mental mistakes and the offence was a little bit slow warming up.

In the second half, the defence kept the ball in front of them, and we outscored (the Cougars).”

Lots of action on both the defensive and the offensive sides for the Cougars is what helped them pull ahead in the first half. By the second quarter, they led the game with a 13-0 point lead.

Heading into the third quarter, the Rams seemed to gain a little confidence and take their offensive game to the next level, securing a few interceptions and a touchdown.

Quance said that this year, the team is taking a two-unit approach to avoid fatiguing players and helping them to hone their skills in their specific positions.

He said that by training the team with set players on both the offensive and defensive side, the team is hoping to combat fatigue and allow each member to make the most of their time on the field.

In the second half of the game, the Rams defence took on a new strength

and was able to prevent the Cougars from several touchdown opportunities.

“I think what happens is in the first half, you’re feeling out the other team and trying to find out where the weaknesses are and what you can exploit,” said Quance.

“What we did was capitalize on some of the things we saw with the slow zone that we were able to exploit them on.

The Cougars were kept on their toes near their five-yard line with pressure from the Rams’ offence driving their opponents towards the end zone.

During a close last quarter, the Rams were able to gain another touchdown, but did not secure a win.

Quance explained that the team will use this loss to

drive their goals forward moving into the season.

“As the season goes on, we’re going to remember that the championship isn’t won in the first week.

We’re going to be playing our best ball by our sixth game, which is seven weeks away,” he said.

Big things ahead for local band YoungFellas

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Good things are happening for local music group YoungFellas.

Andrew Galloway, Jordan Galloway, Dalton Case and Dane Blacquiere, known collectively as YoungFellas just finished playing one of their favourite music festivals, Alberta’s Own, and are looking forward to some big developments about to happen with the group. “(Alberta’s Own) is one of the most fun shows I think that we have ever played,” said Andrew, rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist for the group. “Everyone there is just a big music supporter.

There’s not a lot of people, but the people who are there really count.”

Case agreed. “It was the best weekend of my life, it really was,” said the lead guitarist and backup vocalist. “I had a wild time.”

YoungFellas play later this month at the Slumland Theatre in Red Deer on Sept. 21st for the Ronald McDonald House Little Rock Stars show.

Meanwhile, Jordan said the Alberta’s Own festival serves as a good get-together with other bands as well. He said that while playing in different places throughout the year, the group gets to meet a lot of people but don’t see them often. However, they are all together at Alberta’s Own. Andrew said the group has attended the festival for a number of years. He added they have always been involved in some way, whether it be playing with different groups, working security or doing filmwork for other bands.

“We haven’t missed this festival since we were old enough to know what it was,” said Andrew.

A fairly young band, YoungFellas has been together for just over two years, though the members have known each other and been playing for much longer. Andrew

and Jordan are brothers and all four of the members where in high school at the same time.

“We’ve grown up pretty close together,” said Andrew.

Case and Andrew formed the group when they both moved back to Lacombe at the same time.

Neither was playing in a group at the time and so they decided to jam together after meeting by chance for the first time in a few years. Jordan and Blacquiere soon joined the jam sessions and the group was formed.

One year ago, YoungFellas caught a big break when they won Rock 104’s Rockstar Search Battle of the Bands. The prize of the competition was a free recording session for one song and the chance to open for Prism at the Rock 104 birthday bash.

YoungFellas actually paid to have a second song recorded as well. Jordan, bassist and backup vocalist for the group, said that opportunity was a big deal because it allows potential venues to hear them before booking and airtime grants them some exposure as well.

“We got lucky with that because to have your music played on radio regularly it needs to be professionally mastered by someone who is already established in the industry,” added Andrew.

“So many young bands we know are really talented but they can’t afford that music production.”

Like most musicians, YoungFellas has faced obstacles and struggled to be successful in the music industry. Case said all the members have made sacrifices for the benefit of the band, some even quitting jobs when work schedules conflicted with shows.

“We know that this is going to be more fun and more worth it in the end than just going to your day job,” said Case.

But the group has enjoyed some success.

They have worked hard, made connections and had a few lucky breaks that have helped them out.

One such opportunity has led the group to begin recording their first album in October.

Andrew said a friend of his has allowed them a heavy discount for studio space and the band is excited to start recording.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Jordan, adding that the band wanted to record the album earlier but wasn’t able to because they lacked the time and the money.

However, there is no time like the present.

“It’s a good time to record (these songs) - they are so tight because we have been playing them for two years,” said Jordan.

Andrew said coming out with their first album should be a big boost for YoungFellas. He added that the band experienced most of its growth after its first two singles had been recorded so he predicts a similar, but bigger outcome once YoungFellas have an entire album.

The guys said their sound is mostly rock n’ roll, with just a little bit of country twang. An-

drew said it’s not enough to make them country rock, but said their sound could be described as “rural rock.”

YoungFellas are also looking to expand the band a bit to include some more instruments. Most of the members, Jordan in particular, play a number of other instruments as well as the ones they play in the group so there are many opportunities for new sounds “There’s always one of us who is late, so someone else will just play their instrument,” said Andrew. news@lacombeexpress.com

A death in the new electronic age Do you want to die at an early age? I doubt many people would be willing to say ‘yes’. But a report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal says this is going to happen unless North Americans learn about the dangers of the electronic age. Fortunately there is a solution.

Dr. Kirsten Patrick, in an editorial in the CMA Journal, paints a dismal picture of what is happening to those who have become addicted to the pleasures of the electronic age.

Patrick says the ownership of conveniences such as television, computers and cars has decreased the amount of time that we move. After all, we can now even shop without getting out of a chair. The result is an increase in the number of people who are obese and have diabetes in low and middle-income countries. And the final result is an early death.

JONES Survey. Increased sitting time increased the risk of death particularly from cardiovascular disease.

Another larger study of 222,497 Australians, aged 45 and older, should trigger increased motion. For instance, those who sat eight to 11 hours a day had a 15% increase of overall mortality. And those who sat over 11 hours daily had a shocking 40% increased risk.

The good news is that this association was not found in the high income countries such as Canada, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates. I find it interesting the U.S. was not mentioned in the study, certainly a high income nation, and loaded with obesity.

So what is really new?

Other studies verify obesity and Type 2 diabetes are now a worldwide problem.

Several years ago I wrote about Dr. James Levine, Professor of Nutrition at the Mayo Clinic, and how he used ‘magic underwear’ to prove why some people were thin and others prone to obesity. He gave an extra 1,000 calories to groups of thin people and obese people for six weeks to see what would happen.

They were also fitted with underwear that monitored there every move. It was impossible for them to scratch an ear without the magic underwear picking it up.

This showed that obese people moved two and a half hours less every day.

This meant they burned 350 fewer calories every day which was stored as fat. So the secret is to keep moving, either shopping until you drop, tapping your toes or getting a little twitchy.

‘Baconing’ up your jam Chef Dez on Cooking Chef

Many people sing the praises of bacon and I am no different. What happens however, when you take that wonderfully complex flavour and turn it into jam? True bliss. Recently I featured my recipe for Rosemary Maple Bacon Jam at a local fair and the popularity of this recipe was overwhelming. So I decided to share it with you.

The best tip is to use premium bacon from a butcher. This is not a recipe for your run of the mill grocery store brand. Don’t get me wrong, you can still do it with regular bacon, but the results are much better with premium. Also, this recipe is not a place for dried rosemary. Fresh rosemary full of essential oils is the way to go. Please use pure maple syrup and not regular pancake syrup.

Somebody asked me “What do you put bacon jam on?” I replied, “Everything!” This is awesome on crackers with goat cheese, pizzas, bruschetta, sand-

wiches, and almost anywhere you would like a savoury concoction.

Rosemary maple bacon jam “The perfect topping for almost any appetizers you may be thinking of offering to your guests, like bruschetta, cheese & crackers, canapés, etc. My favourite is paired with soft un-ripened goat cheese (chevre) as the creamy tanginess is the perfect match for this sweet complex concoction.”

1 lb bacon slices, cut into 1/4 inch pieces Two medium onions, quartered and sliced thin Six to eight garlic cloves, chopped One cup black coffee 2/3 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar One tbsp. finely chopped fresh rosemary Add the bacon pieces to a heavy bottomed pan or Dutch oven. Turn the heat to medium/high and cook the bacon until almost crisp, reducing the heat to medium as it starts to

turn brown, stirring occasionally, about 20 minutes.

Remove the cooked bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on paper towels to drain.

Remove all but 1 tbsp. of the bacon fat from the pan.

Turn the heat to medium and stir in the onions to the tablespoon of bacon fat followed by the garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until this onion/garlic mixture is softened and slightly browned, approximately five to seven minutes.

Add the coffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, vinegar, rosemary, and reserved bacon. Stir to combine and increase the heat to medium/high to bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium/low and simmer uncovered for approximately 90 minutes until the mixture is syrupy and has a jam like texture.

Transfer this mixture to a food processor and pulse a few times until the consistency/texture is what you desire. Will last up to three weeks in your refrigerator.

Makes approximately two cups.

Allowing your neighbourhood trends to inspire you If you are on social media you are probably familiar with the ALS ice bucket challenge.

Dump, donate, nominate...rinse, repeat.

It is a craze sweeping North America as millions of dollars are being raised for ALS awareness and research. Some go big (front loaders full of cold water) to tiny (little kids filling sand pails with ice and water) but no matter how you execute the deed it has become a daily news feed item and everybody is into the goodwill.

Have you ever noticed how some things become fads or trends? How some topics, actions or causes will catch on at whirlwind speed and gain momentum and notoriety faster than others? This is a phenomenon known as ‘going viral’ and has become the goal of marketers and business owners alike as they try to take advantage of the free momentum that a viral internet trend of video can have.

MECKLER The same is true with home renovations in certain demographics with similar speed and velocity of a cutesy video of a piano playing cat, you can see neighbourhoods go ‘viral’ when one person steps out and begins to renovate. Like a man with a new ride-on mower in his driveway, men and women alike will flock to the renovation site to try and get a glimpse and have a conversation about what is happening.

If the neighbourhood is small or remote, the frenzy is usually twofold.

I have witnessed neighbours emerging from homes to talk to the trades or estimators they see across the street. They will

be bold about asking them to come to their house to have a look as the opportunity is too good to pass up when you have a bona fide contractor in front of your home!

It is with amusement and delight that I sometimes take phone call after phone call from ‘Betty’ or ‘Donna’s’ neighbour who heard that I was coming to give a design consultation and could I please come by after? There have even been situations of me showing up for a consult only to find a roomful of women waiting for my advice!

We are creatures based in need and greed and if one of our friends is getting new flooring or furniture we will diligently investigate until we know exactly what they are purchasing so we can either buy similar or completely outdo our friends.

I know some of you are shaking your head in denial while you read but trust me; I have seen the competition in my clients’

eyes as they design against friends and relatives alike.

If the sight of your neighbour’s house surrounded by sub trades makes you want to start a project of your own, I say go for it! Take the concept and make it go viral throughout your neighbourhood and enjoy the beautiful home you have created.

Like the ALS challenge though, I encourage you to do it just to your liking and adapt it to fit your home, family and budget. You will be far more pleased with the outcome than if you simply try to copy what you may have just seen.

Whatever your motivation may be, keep in mind that your home and its functionality are completely you and while it is flattering to emulate your friends’ design choices, it is more important to have a home that is completely you.
