The Police in Fort St. James are reminding people to lock their doors even if they feel their neighbourhood is safe in light of a recent group of break-nenters.

On Aug. 20 at 9 a.m. on Birch Street there was a reported breakn-enter. About an hour later another. In both cases electronics and personal property was taken. There was no sign of forced entry for neither one of the houses were secured.

“It’s important to lock your doors because we get these thieves that check the doors and if they open they walk around,” said sergeant. Tony Hanson of the FSJ RCMP.

Non-profit groups with programs surrounding sports, the environment, social services, public safety and/or arts and culture, will have a chance to learn how to gain extra funding.

On Saturday September 20 the District of Fort St. James, in partnership with Northern Interior Communities Association, will be hosting a free 4-hour workshop on preparing and applying to the BC Gaming Grant Program. The workshop will take place at the National Historic Site in the theatre area from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. With 20 spaces available guests are asked to bring their own lunch but tea and coffee will be provided.

“Last year we held an Enterprises non-profit workshop so this is the second workshop specific to grant writing,” said Shauna Hesse, Fort St. James grant writer and workshop organizer.

“Ultimately it’s our organizations pulling together to make things happen in the community.”

The workshop will give a range of information pertaining to grant writing such as eligibility, grant amounts, the application and processing.

There will also be a walk through of the grant applying process with help determining what kind of gaming grant is right for your organization.

Rhonda Dickson of NICA will be teaching the workshop.

“I will be going through the application

process and what the expectations are from the gaming branch,” said Ms. Dickson. “I don’t work for the gaming branch as I am a non profit organization myself. Since not everyone will be able to apply at this time because of when the grants fall I will help determine the correct sector for your group and go over when you can apply for your grant. The smell of delicious cooking has once again filled the air at the College of New Caledonia in Fort St. James.

The cooks are back for another year of professional chef training at CNC and all who work in the building benefit.

Full production started for the Professional Cook level 1 students Sept. 5 and for the next 28 weeks students, staff and school guests will have a cheap and tasty place to find daily breakfast and lunch.

“We’re not trying to be competitive to places in town, we’re just trying to give the students a real life situation,” said Journeyman Peter Krauseneck who has taught the course six years running. “[The food prices] are not a big cost but it’s a cost, so people may be obligated to make a complaint if the food wasn’t good. We want them to know in real life they will get complaints from time to time.”

The cooking course started Aug. 25 and for

the past couple weeks students have been learning the basics of working in a restaurantstyle kitchen. Skills already learned include kitchen safety, measurements and basic knife knowledge including how to hold and use professional grade knives to cut, stick and dice. A few learned include Julienne, Brunoise, small and medium dice, and Boutonnet.

Gabriella Joseph, 19, a student in the course, says a big part of the class is learning how to work with others.

“In your own kitchen you’re used to you and maybe someone else,” said Ms. Joseph, looking around at the chaotic atmosphere of people working simultaneously at different projects throughout the kitchen. “It’s a lot different here.”

Each part of the

kitchen represents a different station with various jobs. Each week the students do a rotation to gain experience at each one. Once everyone has had a turn at each station the class will move

cooking.

“You learn about the difference in commercial and organic foods and once you taste it you notice a big difference,” said Ms. Bird.

To become a certified cook each student must complete 1000 hours. At the start of the course students signed on as apprentices and will obtain 600 hours after completing and passing the course.

They will then need 400 hours of in-kitchen time outside of the school to become certified.

“A big problem in previous years was there was no one for them to work under. They need to work under a red seal chef to be credited the hours toward their certifications” said chef Krauseneck.

Factory model fading for schools Tom Fletcher Black Press

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation’s latest demand, for binding arbitration on selected pocketbook issues of its members, is going nowhere.

This follows months of the union’s insistence on mediation.

First a B.C. Supreme Court judge met with both sides and walked away. Then the BCTF’s preferred choice, Vince Ready, agreed that mediation won’t fix the current version of the mess he last examined in 2007.

BCTF president Jim Iker announced the arbitration gambit on Friday, in one of the webcasts he uses to rally the union’s exhausted membership.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender replied that with five

minutes’ notice to the government’s chief negotiator and lacking specifics on what would be subject to arbitration, the proposal would forfeit the government’s mandate to control costs.

“This government will not raise taxes in order to provide a settlement to one union that does not reflect what the other public sector has done,” Fassbender said.

In short, there will be a negotiated settlement, eventually. The union chose to begin the strike, and now must find a way to end it.

The government’s position in this dispute is unlike any of the many that preceded it.

And it points the way to an evolution of education that cannot be stopped.

The announcement of a $40-a-day payment for days lost during a

fall strike for children under 13 was greeted with scorn by the BCTF and its echo chambers.

Among its goals is to “allow teachers and students the flexibility to personalize their learning experience to better meet each student’s individual strengths and needs.”

One of B.C.’s early models for self-directed learning is Thomas Haney secondary in Maple Ridge, where senior high students are expected to make their own way through course work, learning to

manage their own time.

It was here that the first couple of Grade 12 students showed up last week to begin making up for lost time from the strike that set in last spring.

Self-directed study has become a crash course.

Private schools are also swamped with applications from Grade 12 students looking for particular courses they will need by next year.

In the short term, Fassbender says the lost strike days will likely have to be restored to the school schedule.

The old theatre’s seats will be used in the new theatre but more will be added. A metal beam has also been added for the hookup of new lighting and sound equipment.

A grand piano owned by the Community Arts Council currently lives in the high school but will soon be housed in the new theatre space.

Runners will take to the loop this month in support of a national hero and his fight against cancer.

Inspired by a dream, the Terry Fox run is a volunteer-driven tradition that has Canadians everywhere running in support of a disease that affects millions each year.

A legacy left behind by a courageous young man has close to 25 countries participating world wide in over 9,000 Terry Fox runs each year. Fort St. James will once again be a part of the innovation hosting a run Sunday September 14 from 10am-3pm starting at Cottonwood Park circling the loop.

The Terry Fox Foundation is one of the largest non-governmental funders of cancer research in the country.

To date, over 1,150 cancer research projects have been funded by the foundation and over $650 million has been raised worldwide.

Projects set out by the Terry Fox Foundation must have measurable outcomes, are internally reviewed and those deemed unproductive are terminated.

It is completely free to participate in the Fort St. James run but donations and sponsorships are encouraged.

Elementary.

Kim Henderson, a previous organizer, says she is looking forward to participating this year and is excited to pass on the role of organizer to Ms. Heiman.

“It’s exciting to have someone take over with some fresh and new ideas,” said Ms. Henderson. “It will be eight years this October my husband passed of brain cancer so it’s always been personal for me. We’ve had it every year at cottonwood, always with a lot of community support and that part will stay the same.

Some people have participated for decades and it’s always nice to see them come out and share their stories.”

Courier Teacher Strike continues province wide JESSE COLE Omineca Express

The day that every parent, teacher, politician and student had been waiting for (or dreading in some cases) came and went last Sept. 2 and classes remained devoid of students and of teachers.

While classrooms were quiet, the sidewalks outside were anything but; teachers from Fort St. James and Vanderhoof were all on the picket lines bright and early on the morning of Sept. 2.

"Each and every one of us would rather be inside of that school," lamented Ray Bartsch, motioning to the vacant building behind him.

Bartsch is a staff representative at NVSS and has been an educator for 31 years. During his tenure as a teacher Bartsch says he has taken to the picket lines "probably five times."

He says that this time, the B.C. Teachers Federation (BCTF) is in it for the long haul.

"We have to be," he says. "We either take a stand or we don't, you know?" Bartsch said he would like to see the B.C. Federation of Labour support the BCTF in their strike saying "…Come to the picket lines and shut down the province…"

"I'm hoping we're back before thanksgiving," Bartsch added.

"But we might not be."

While B.C. teachers remain committed to their strike, student's effectively remain on a prolonged summer vacation (something I'm sure they're oh so upset about).

The continuing strike has left many parents flustered as to what to do with their children for the remainder of the strike. The government of British Columbia has addressed the problem in their own way by promising to pay $40 a day to parents of students aged 13 and younger, which totals a staggering $12 million a day in payments. Money many parents feel would be better spent on the teachers.

If the government can pay parents they

can afford to pay teachers," said Margaret Jex, a parent of an out-ofschool student. "Teachers have a right to be paid a fair wage… Our children have rights and one of those rights is a good education. The

teachers are doing their part but I think they could use more public support," she added.

Still not everyone is so supportive of the ongoing strike. Parent Christa Alyssa Beaverstock said, "my

son is four right now and with the way the strikes keep happening I think I'll just end up home schooling him.

The teachers have been striking on and off since I was in school. There still hasn't been a way

in which they've been able to really get what they want without it effecting the timeline of the school year. I feel it's a system that needs fixing."

Despite mixed feelings from both sides,

Bartsch says that he does believe the government cares about their plight. "I think the government cares but I think they have a philosophical and political agenda that they're following." He added

that there are two sides to every story saying "There is always two sides to every story, maybe more; three.

There's our side, their side and somewhere in the middle there is probably the truth."

Mr. Stewart says the town could also benefit from replacing smaller lines with bigger lines, especially in certain areas where pipes are much too small for the amount of people attached to them.

“We have the engineering done, the next step is to find funding,” said Mr. Stewart, who says it can cost upwards of $500,000 to exchange half a block worth of two-inch piping for sixinch piping.

Another future plan is to loop around deadend lines to create better flow and help keep the water cleaner.

“Really I would love to put in a whole treatment plant in to take all the impurities out of the water and then we wouldn’t have to worry about any of this stuff,” said Mr. Stewart.

The 2013 water report shows Fort St. James’ water exceeds Northern Health standards for drinkability, however, water hardness poses a problem said Dave Stewart, public works superintendent.

“The hardness comes from iron and manganese which creates a lot of problems for aesthetics (odour).

It doesn’t harm you but it’s not good for the pipe systems because after a while the metals erode,” said Mr. Stewart.

The municipality’s water system works entirely off an artesian well located on the north side of Birch Street east. The untreated water is pumped to a 2,278 cubic meter reinforced concrete reservoir at the end of Stuart Drive and runs through 520 connections serving approximately 2200 residents extending to the Nak’azdli reserve.

In accordance with the Drinking Water Protection Act, the Fort St.

James public works department does an annual report to ensure safety of the drinking water for residents of Fort St. James and Nak’azdli Band.

In 2013, 47 samples collected at seven different locations were sent to Northern Health for analysis. All samples returned negative for any coliforms or E. coli. The report also concluded above acceptable standards of colour, conductivity, and above acceptable levels of most metals including aluminum, arsenic, chromium and lead. However, results show the water’s iron levels are higher than accepted along with the water’s CaC03 (hardness) levels which are approaching unacceptable standards at 328 mg/l, whereas acceptable would be 200mg/l and unacceptable is 500 mg/l.

“One of the first things I want to add to the system is an injection point so if we ever had to chlorinate we can disinfect the water supply. It wouldn’t

take long because we already have the pumps.

However, chlorine reacts with manganese so you might get black residue,” said Mr. Stewart.

The public works crew performs daily checks of the water system to ensure everything is running smoothly. They also flush all the main lines in the spring and again

in the fall before everything freezes. This includes shutting off the main lines which helps to loosen up the water in the pipes and release build up from over the years.

To help with build up the public works department just purchased a new service line cleaner (water jet) to clean the pipes but, will need to
