Kristen Eagle, left, and Erik Rhine cruise along the sidewalk in East Red Deer Monday. The two boys did not seem to notice the foul weather as they made their way to a friends house after school. Unseasonably cold weather, rain and snow is expected to persist through Wednesday before the sun shows itself again on Thursday with warmer temperatures.

Mother charged with first-degree murder in daughter’s death BY THE CANADIAN PRESS DIDSBURY — The mother of a nineyear-old girl found dead in a vehicle on a road in rural Alberta wept on Monday as she was charged with firstdegree murder. Laura Coward, 47, appeared in court via closed-circuit television in the town of Didsbury, about 100 kilometres northwest of Calgary.

Coward, with shoulder-length blond hair and wearing a black sweatshirt, answered “yes” tearfully when asked if she could hear the judge. She could be heard sobbing again when she was told the murder charge was replacing initial charges from last week of abducting the girl in violation of a court order, break and enter and theft. Coward was arrested on Tuesday near Sundre when she was found

standing outside the vehicle in which her dead daughter, Amber Lucius, was discovered. Coward’s next court appearance has been set for Oct. 6 in Calgary. Amber’s father, Duane Lucius, issued a statement that said a funeral for his daughter would be held later this week.

Central Alberta has a flashing neon message for Premier Jim Prentice — reverse the closure of Michener Centre. R o a d s , health care, oil PRENTICE LOOKS FOR and gas pipe- QUICK RESET A3 lines and educational opportunities also made a local list of priorities put forward for the new premier. Wildrose MLA Kerry Towle said Prentice must commit to keeping Michener Centre open. “Premier Hancock could have done it and didn’t have the courage to do it. Premier Prentice can end this right now,” said Towle on Monday after Prentice’s weekend Progressive Conservative leadership win. Not only have five Michener residents died after they were moved, a terminally ill resident still living at Michener is scheduled to be moved, she said. “Today I was made aware of a resident who is terminally ill who is being moved in October. Why would we remove residents who are terminally ill?” Towle said. “These people are being forgotten and ignored by the government. This is just shocking.” The MLA for Innisfail and Sylvan Lake is trying to find out where the resident will be going, but the five former residents who passed away all went into continuing care or long-term care, she said. Prentice was the only leadership candidate who did not commit to whether the longtime centre for the developmentally disabled should close or remain open. Michael Dawe, the Red Deer North Liberal candidate in the 2012 provincial election, said allowing Michener residents to stay would go a long way for Prentice to build public trust.

The old cliche jack of all trades, master of none does not fly with Brayden Posyluzny. The national champion Red Deer octathlete is well on his way to mastering all disciplines in track and field. After winning gold at the Canadian Youth Legion Track and Field Championships in Langley, B.C., in August, he is preparing for his final year at Notre Dame High School, and is attempting to secure scholarships to universities with a successful indoor season. Maybe the most impressive part is that Posyluzny, 17, has only been in track and field for four years. “I knew going into track that I wasn’t the best, I’d always finish below eighth and I wasn’t always the top guy,” he said. “I told myself it would take time and commitment to develop my skills and it would take time for me to get better, especially with all of my events. “I just started to learn to tell myself not to worry about results now, worry

about long-term goals and not to worry about what people think of you now because in the end it will all be OK.” The octathlon combines the 100-metre sprint, long jump, shot put, 400 metres, 110-metre hurdles, high jump, javelin and 1,000 metres over the course of two days. He finished with 5,104 points, besting silver medallist Philippe Baril (4,965) of Quebec and bronze medallist Sam Fennell (4,931) of Ontario. The five-foot-10, 170-pound Posyluzny also picked up silver in the 4x100-metre relay and bronze in the 4x400-metre relay. By the time they get to high school, most athletes start zeroing in on certain events as a specialty. Some will have a small handful of events that they do well in. But octathletes have to focus on all of them. This year as Posyluzny moves up to the junior age group, he will add pole vaulting and discus and compete as a decathlete. Olympic gold medal decathletes are considered the greatest athletes in the world.
