Premier Christy Clark recently urged the B.C. Teachers Federation to suspend its strike to allow public school classes to open while negotiations continue. And she insisted the union get “realistic” and move towards the public sector pattern on wage increases so the two sides can hammer out a deal to improve class support for special needs, which she called the biggest issue facing the education system. “There are no easy fixes and no shortcuts to achieving long-term labour peace for kids,” said Clark. BCTF president Jim Iker ruled out a pause in the strike along the lines of the two-week truce the province proposed last week and is still offering. “The government remains entrenched and unwilling to be flexible,” he told reporters. “We’re not suspending

any strike right now.” The premier had been criticized in recent days for keeping a low profile as the teachers strike rolled into September without a deal. The premier said the union’s position is unreasonably high and made repeated references to BCTF demands for massage therapy benefits – a request that was dropped in recent weeks – and a $5,000 signing bonus that would cost the province more than $150 million. Clark gave no indication of how long the government is prepared to let the strike continue or if classes might reopen under an essential services designation on the basis of damage to students’ education. Fassbender has vowed the government won’t legislate the teachers back to work this time. The strike began with rotating walkouts in the spring and turned into a complete school shutdown in mid-June. There were virtually no negotiations through the summer until a lastminute effort at exploratory talks led by mediator Vince Ready began last week. Ready walked out on Saturday, declaring an impasse with the two sides too far apart for mediation to be productive. Clark said the eventual deal with teachers must be fair – giving them a deserved raise but also respecting that other unionized workers have accepted the

government’s economic mandate offer on wages. “The teachers union needs to come to the table with a proposal that is realistic,” Clark told reporters. “For heaven’s sake, 150,000 other public sector employees who work just as hard have settled for far less.” In fact, the massage demand, when it was still on the table, was for a maximum of $3,000 per year on a doctor’s prescription. Iker insisted the BCTF is close to the government on wages and made significant concessions in recent weeks. The government offer is seven per cent over six years, while the union wants eight per cent over five years. Iker said the signing bonus demand is “negotiable” and reiterated his call for Clark to meet him directly. Iker repeatedly criticized the government for committing money to priorities other than education, including the new B.C. Place stadium roof, a payout to a California utility to settle lawsuits against BC Hydro, and now the $40-a-day payments to parents. He estimated the extra money needed to fund the BCTF demands represents $3 per day per student. “They have $40 a day right now to keep kids out of school. It’s about choices.” But the province says the combined wages and benefits demand is still nearly twice what other public sector unions have accepted. Overhanging the talks is the government’s pending appeal of the latest court ruling on class size and composition, slated to be heard in mid-October. Iker again called on the government to drop its insistence on a clause that would let it “nullify” another ruling in favour of teachers. Clark was asked if it’s possible to overcome the animosity stemming from the stripping of the teachers’ contract in 2002 when she was education minister. “I think we can and I think we have to,” she said. “We all have to get past the emotion here.” The province has offered a $75-million Learning Improvement Fund to help address special needs but the union wants much more for special needs and to settle grievances. Clark said the government’s offer adds up to $375 million to improve class composition with more teachers and CUPE support staff.

Monday, September 8, 2014 Kootenay News Advertiser
Letter: The first school week that wasn’t This past week should have been the first week of school. For students and their teachers, it’s supposed to be a time of excitement and anticipation. But instead, it’s a time of frustration and uncertainty. I am not happy about where things currently stand. Throughout this dispute, everything we’ve tried to do is to have schools open on time and reach a settlement. But the BCTF leadership has refused every path to a fair deal. They won’t even let teachers vote on suspending pickets while an agreement is mediated. The BCTF is asking for nearly twice as much as what other public-sector workers
have achieved. They also insist on a $5,000 signing bonus. They need to get realistic about wages and benefits so we can get on with negotiating class size and composition. I worry the BCTF is actually counting on government to legislate an end to this strike so they can avoid having a difficult conversation with their members about what is realistic and achievable. Our government has been very clear that we have no plans to legislate. That would only keep us on the same dysfunctional treadmill we’ve been on for the past 30 years. As hard as it is, we intend to stand firm and hope the union leadership drops
its unrealistic demands so we can negotiate a fair agreement. It’s clear that wages remain one of the big stumbling blocks and led veteran labour mediator Vince Ready to declare that mediation is not possible at this time. But a prolonged strike will not change the basic fact that the best possible deal for teachers is an affordable negotiated agreement. I am sure many British Columbians are still trying to understand what’s at the heart of this dispute. For the past year, the BCTF has been saying funding has been cut, the education system is in trouble, and that students are struggling. The truth is dramatically different. We now spend nearly $1 billion more each year than we did 13 years ago - and
that’s at a time when we have 70,000 fewer students to serve. Perpupil funding is up by 38% since 2001. All of the data shows B.C. students are doing better than ever. Graduation rates are up and a range of recent international studies show that B.C. students are, quite simply, among the best in Canada and the best in the world. In fact, the very students the BCTF claims are struggling are actually those who have made the most dramatic improvements. Since 2000-01, the completion rate for students with special needs is up 76%; for First Nations, it is up 42%; and for English-language learners (ELL), it is up 11%. Teachers deserve credit for the success our students are achieving. They deserve a raise.
But any salary increase has to be affordable for taxpayers and fair to the other 150,000 publicsector workers who have already signed agreements. The other key issue is class size and composition. It is government’s number one priority at the table. Despite the BCTF’s claims, B.C. does not have large classes. Average class sizes are near historic lows. The student-toteacher ratio (18 to 1) has been stable and is the same today as it was in 2001. Government’s approach on class composition is to help students with new resources, more teachers and educational assistants. We need to focus on what does the most good, and while we need to make progress on this issue, we can’t ignore how far we’ve
come. Over the past 13 years, we’ve seen dramatic improvements to how we support students with special needs and the results speak for themselves. We are not going to put these gains at risk by going backwards to a factory model with rigid ratios on class composition that the BCTF is proposing because they don’t work for students and never did. To help teachers and students succeed, BCPSEA is proposing flexible approaches that target resources to where they can make a real difference. The offer on the table would guarantee a minimum of $375 million over five years to address complex classroom needs, and a stronger role for teachers in deciding how to spend these funds. And whether it’s
more BCTF or CUPE members - it doesn’t matter - because students’ needs should come first. I have grandchildren in the public school system. Like everyone else, I want this dispute to end. In fact, my sole purpose as the Minister of Education is to transform our system to make sure B.C. kids get the best possible education for the future. I look forward to negotiating a resolution to the strike so we can get on with our overarching goal: Developing capable young people ready to thrive in a rapidly changing world. ~Peter Fassbender Minister of Education
Kootenay Glacier Kings battle the best to take Senior Games by Rod and Wendy Guimont
The Kootenay Glacier Kings hockey team, made up of players from the West and East Kootenay area represented BC at the Canadian 55+ Senior Games held in Strathcona County August 26 – 29th. The Glacier Kings team won the BC Summer games last year in Kamloops to qualify for these Canadian championships. Rod Guimont from Cranbrook was part of the provincial team last year and he invited eight more local players to join the team for the Canadian challenge. With the addition of four players from the 1982 Cranbrook Royals Allan Cup winning team (Terry Kirkham, Derek Spring, Ken Stroud and Rod Guimont,) along with tough defense

from Eldon Wales, Jim Bermel, Ken Manson and David White and solid net minding from Martin Ross, the East Kootenay players helped to create a well-balanced and very strong team. Four practices were held before the tournament, two in Nelson and two in Trail. Two games were played on the first tournament day, with the Glacier Kings beating the NWT 14 – 1. Four hours later they were up against the Alberta provincial champs from Lethbridge and they came out on top 3 – 1. Calgary had a great team but they were dealt their first loss of the tournament on the second day as they lost 6 – 4 to the Glacier Kings. With just over one minute left to play, Pat Severyn scored the winner for the Kootenay team. Guimont says: “It was a big commitment from all of the players, but we were thoroughly rewarded not only by the outcome but by the wonderful experience and the great memories. HARDEST WORKING, SMOOTHEST RIDING
Submitted There are some major changes regarding the elk, mule deer and cougar hunt that have been announced since the hunting synopsis was first released by the province. For mule deer, there are a few more restrictions. The regular season for any bucks has been replaced by a four-point buck season that runs until November 10. The ministry has stated that this is because during consultations with hunters, it was observed that there has been a decline in the mule deer population. Currently the
Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations is working on a research project to determine what the cause of the decline is. The length of the cougar hunt has been extended, although in some regions that have high hunting pressure there is still a female quota. The biggest changes come with the elk hunt for antlerless cow and calf harvests in the south trench area that runs from Canal Flats to the U.S. border. While there is still some limited antlerless and general open seasons on private land, most of the hunting
will be through limited entry hunting permits. Spike bull season is still on, providing at least a few more opportunities for elk hunting in the area. The season for bow hunting for antlerless elk has been extended however, to allow for hunting opportunities while keeping the harvest low. There are also new motor vehicle access restrictions. For maps and explanations of these restrictions, and all the revised regulations in detail, please visit the website at www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/ wildlife/hunting/regulations/ for more information.

the deer to stop briefly as it moves through the woods. You can make a quick ‘bleating’ sound to stop the deer in its tracks in order to get it to stop in a strategic spot for shooting. (A bleat is one short, quick sound that a goat makes). Make sure to give yourself a moment before climbing down out of your tree stand or leaving your blind after shooting your deer and watch to see where your deer heads. You may have to wait for light if it goes very far. A blood trail, broken branches and hoof prints will guide you to it’s location.
13 S 20 RD
reaches about 20 - 25 yards away, this will be the distance you will be shooting for hitting a deer. You can ‘call’ a deer in by making a ‘grunting’ or ‘rattling’ sound. The grunt sound is done with the mouth or a grunt tube, and the rattle sound is done with a set of antlers. It is illegal to bait deer so using corn or feed is not allowed. Once your deer moves in, waiting for the right moment to shoot is the final key. Since it’s important to have an unobstructed path for the arrow to move through, create or have a clear pathway for shooting otherwise your arrow may deflect if it hits a branch. Also, since your best shot will be done with a still or non-moving target, you will want to wait for
13 S 20 RD
Once you have chosen your bow, arrows, sites, clothing and target, it’s important to make sure you practice before each new season, and every hunt, with a well made compound bow to hone your shooting skills. Good practices of hunting start by learning how to shoot properly, making a clean kill so that you do not leave wounded deer in the woods to die. Understanding the kill point or ‘boiler room’ is important so that you do not have to go very far looking for your deer once it has been struck. The kill point or ‘boiler room’ is located just behind the shoulder and about a third of the way up on the chest. The intention is to hit the heart, which is just below the lungs of a deer. The entry point for the broad head tip will vary slightly depending on the angle of the arrow as it enters due to where the hunter is standing (which is usually on a stand up a tree - using a safety harness!). The best angle to hit a deer is broadside (directly from a side angle). Also, before ever entering the woods it’s important to keep your body and all your clothing free from contaminants. Make sure you don’t introduce gasoline on your hunting boots or clothing by filling up on your way to your blind or hunting spot. Keep your entire body clean of contaminants too by washing with unscented soaps and shampoos. Also, don’t enter a room or brush up against clothing or people with perfumes, etc. Hunting is generally done in the wee hours of the morning or evening, the time when the deer are moving the most. Otherwise deer typically stay bedded down until the next wee hour of the day in order not to be seen so unless you do a ‘drive’ of the deer you are likely not to see many, if any at all, during the daytime hours. This mostly holds true
for the Midwest area except during the rut season. Once you have scouted the area for deer, practiced your shooting skills, and properly prepared yourself for entering the woods, you can now carefully walk to your blind or hunting spot, moving in downwind. If you are hunting in the evening hour of the day be sure to go 2 hours prior to sundown and sit quietly. If hunting in the morning hour of the day, be sure to be there 1 hour before sunrise. Unless you are hunting on a game reserve during the daytime where the deer move a little more often, you will likely be bow hunting in the compromised light of the day, and since your arrow will lose it’s power and trajectory angle once it

called you out for walking right by such invaluable clues! Whenever you’re in the woods, get in the habit of detecting the tracks made by your chosen game. Learn how to recognize male and female hoof or paw prints and as well as their average size. That way, you’ll be able to tell if you’re following a large male or a young female. Their tracks will
also tell you the direction in which the animal is heading, and if they are fresh they will signal you to move stealthily. Droppings are another important indication of an animal’s proximity or passage through a territory. Learn to identify the different types of scat and know how fresh it is. Rub marks on trees, paw scrapes on the ground made by game in rut, as well as
broken twigs and hairs caught in branches are all important tracking signs. The more you walk in the woods, the more aware you will become of this kind of detail, and the more your hunting skills will improve. Expertise comes with time and concentration, but above all, don’t be afraid to ask for tips from more experienced hunters and trackers.

Plan to spend September 27 hunting or fishing with the family this year. Submitted Before the advent of agriculture, human beings hunted and fished for their food. Even after agricultural practices had been established, hunting continued to occupy an important role in sourcing out food for survival and trade. Still today, hunting and fishing are important food sources for many people. Despite that reality, hunting and fishing are often denounced as cruel, unnecessary, and even as a sport for bloodthirsty and brutal people. The critics of these activities couldn’t be more ill-informed. While the behaviour of some hunters and fishermen does not follow established etiquette and common morality, and while poachers do exist, the majority of people who engage in hunting and fishing do so for good reasons. These people res pect the
rules surrounding the sport, including guidelines and laws governing the preservation of animal species. In fact, hunting and fishing helps to keep many wild animal populations under control. In addition, these activities offer an ideal opportunity for friends and members of the same family to get together and spend quality time doing something active. And it should not be forgotten that the vast majority of hunters and fishermen eat what they catch, without wasting anything. “Hunt. Shoot. Fish. Share the pride!” is the slogan for this year’s National Hunting and Fishing Day, which takes place on September 27, 2014. To discover more about these activities, which are an integral part of our history, visit www. nhfday.org.

After shooting large game, beginners and seasoned hunters alike can feel an adrenaline rush that causes them to make mistakes when retrieving their prize. Of course, it’s not hard to find the animal when it falls close to where it was shot, no matter what type of hunting weapon is used. However, if that is not the case, hunters must be very methodical and follow some basic rules in order to find their kill. These skills are a point of honour for any sport hunter. The direction Be sure to take note of the last place the game was seen before it disappeared into the woods. Do this by selecting a landmark or by using
threatening. Start your tracking sooner, however, if it is raining or snowing, as tracks or other signs left by the game could quickly disappear. The search Move slowly and silently towards your point of reference, looking for signs of injury (drops of blood and hair) and tracks while marking your route at regular intervals with trail marking tape. Of course, if you’re hunting with a guide, your task will be much easier. Lastly, keep in mind that you have to know your own limits and those of the weapon you’re using before firing at game. It would be awful to lose out on fresh venison by uselessly injuring a deer or by not taking all possible steps to find where it went down.

Integrating all Planes of Motion into your Workouts In order for your workouts to be useful and functional
– and by functional I mean making your daily life, your job, your sport or whichever activity you engage in easier – it needs to be adapted to you and to your body’s requirements. However, many people workout primarily in the “sagittal plane”. The sagittal plane is the plane of motion that makes you go forwards and backwards, but as human beings we are designed to move in all planes Aurélie of motion. Take any sport Wiedemann and try to see if people only move back and forth: Hockey, rugby, basketball, football, baseball, martial arts, golf etc. all require movements in every direction. When gardening, when cleaning the house, even when shopping for groceries, we need to twist (transverse plane), bend sideways (frontal plane). Sometimes we even work in all three planes of motion at once like when lifting bags at the grocery store, when vacuuming or when pulling out weeds in the yard. At the CHEK Institute one of the requirements of our program designs is to include multiple planes of motion in each workout if the client is fit to do so. Usually after the postural correction phase is over, we try to adapt the workouts to the client’s activities and include the movements and planes of motion they will need to perform in. Conditioning people that way reduces the chance of injury tremendously. When people workout, they often feel stronger and tend to engage in more physically demanding activities. Unfortunately, if they have mainly trained in the sagittal plane, they will perform poorly if asked to do a chore in another plane of motion. This is quite alarming since some people might take on tasks they aren’t ready for, thinking: “I workout regularly, I am very strong at the leg press so I should be able to lunge sideways while lifting this heavy grocery bag.” You can see how this can lead to all kinds of injuries. Working out is great, working out cleverly is even better. If you want to know more about how to exercise with proper form call/message Aurélie Wiedemann at 250-464-4046. You can also e-mail Aurélie at sattvatraining@gmail.com NEW for September: If you purchase one of our personal training packages, you get 10% off your organic groceries at “From The Ground Up” for the duration of your contract, a $70 gift certificate at the Colon Hydrotherapy Clinic with Catherine Jacques, 10% off at Lisa Tettamanti-Rattvay’s naturopathic clinic and a free consultation with Amanda Greenthumb Certified Health coach. Brrr... Cold Showers!
With fall here and winter on the way the thought of a cold shower might sound like a hot water tank nightmare or some sort of strange punishment. Over the years, however, many of my older European patients have told me that they intentionally take a cold shower every day. On their advice, I have tried it and while shocking, it is invigorating and feels great afterwards and I now make it a regular habit. Interestingly, science is now catching up to this old European tradition and proving it to be beneficial in many ways. Cold showers improve how you feel by stimulating the secretion of neurotransmitters like noradrenaline that boost mood, prevent depression and help manage stress. They also help increase production of testosterone improving energy and muscle growth. A cold shower drives blood flow deep into your body where it feeds the internal organs improving circulation and organ function throughout the day. Your
immune system will also benefit. Those who take cold showers have higher levels of white blood cells and other cells that fight off infection. A short and sweet cold shower will stimulate your metabolism and help you burn calories too. If you decide to try this form of hydrotherapy, transitioning from your hot morning shower to a cold one can take some time. Start with your normal hot shower and at the end slowly turn down the water temperature until it is cool. Gradually, over several days, make the end of your shower colder for longer periods of time. Or, if you are a go-getter, go for it cold from start to finish. Having a purely cold shower stimulates more of the benefits I describe above however having a hot shower that ends with cold will still give you many benefits. Once into the routine of it, your body might actually crave the cold water and the invigoration that comes with it, not to mention a strange sense of accomplishment!

Wakeboarders triumph
ADMAN
Three Cranbrook wakeboarders have wrapped up their season on a winning note at the Alberta Provincials. Colden Thompson advanced from the first heat to the Finals in the Open Division, which features advanced riders of all ages. The youngest competitor in the divison, Thompson put in two impressive runs and
took 3rd place overall. The 17-year old has finished in the top three in every competition he has entered in this, his first year of competitive riding. Earlier this summer, he won a bronze medal in Junior Men’s at the Canadian National Wakeboard Championships. Brothers Ryder and Dagen Duczek also competed at the Provincial Championships. Ryder won first place in the
U-11 Division, while Dagen took first in the U-8 Division. Both brothers ended the season with two first place and one second place finishes and already have their sights set on next season. The Provincials were held in Alix Lake, near Red Deer and featured over 40 riders from the three Western Provinces. The trio ride at Tie Lake, BC.

National Trucking Week is coming up soon, giving the trucking industry a chance to shine. The Canadian Trucking Alliance says that over 260,000 drivers haul the goods that make our country thrive. Since the decline of widespread railroad transportation, our roads and highways are heavily populated with big rigs and the truck stops and weigh stations that go along with them. But have you ever wondered what exactly those weigh stations are for? If a truck weigh station or inspection station is open, all commercial trucks must stop there and pass over scales. In most jurisdictions, that applies to trucks registering a gross weight of over 4,500 kg and buses that can carry over 10 passengers. Although the details may vary across North America, in general the procedure is designed to control the amount of weight being driven on highways and to enforce load safety and fuel tax logging. The truck must meet acceptable standards in weight, length, height, width, and axle spacing. Mobile weigh stations are sometimes used to prevent the possibility of drivers bypassing known stations. At a station, the driver’s commercial vehicle operator’s registration (CVOR) certificate is examined for validity, and it is verified that he or she has the correct class of provincial driver’s license for the equipment being driven. By law, the driver must also be able to produce the truck and trailer’s registration, insurance certificate for the vehicle or fleet, a recent daily vehicle inspection report, and a daily road log for the previous two weeks.
Disruption, a new documentary on climate change, premieres around the world this Sunday, September 7th, including in Kimberley. The worldwide premiere is being organized in the lead up to the People’s Climate March in New York later in the September. The screening in Kimberley,
plus a second screening in Cranbrook on Wednesday, September 10th, both organized by Wildsight, will inspire viewers for a local climate rally in Cranbrook scheduled for September 20th. The film asks the question: “When it comes to climate change, why do we do so little when we
know so much?” “We are excited and inspired by the People’s Climate Rally coming together in NYC” said Lars Sander-Green, Wildsight’s Climate Program Manager, “and so we wanted to show this film to help inspire people for a local rally - and to give people a chance to get discuss plans for that rally.” On September 21st, the largest climate rally in history takes to the streets of NYC to demand climate action
from world leaders and on Sept 20th, locals will take to the streets of Cranbrook to do the same. Disruption shows in Kimberley on Sunday, September 7 at Centre 64, at 7:30 p.m. In Cranbrook, the film screens at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre at 7:30pm on Wednesday, September 10th. Admission is by donation to Wildsight.

Marlene Patricia Kasner 1940 - 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the very sudden passing of our dearly loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Marlene Kasner, on Saturday, August 30, 2014. Marlene leaves behind her four beloved children, Don (Dagny) Kasner, Rod (Tracey) Kasner, Garry (Leslie) Kasner, and Karen (Kurt) Kenney; ten grandchildren, Kendall (Jeff), Danielle (Will), Jordan (Chelsea), Kirsten (Steve), Krystine (Brody), Lindsay (Brody), Jeremy, Mark, Nicole and Emmerson; and three great grandchildren, Meia, Eli and Keria. Marlene was born on July 26, 1940 in Magrath, Alberta to John and Mary McArthur. The eldest of three siblings, Marlene spent her early years in Vancouver and moved to Coaldale, Alberta in 1956 where she married Calvin Kasner and raised their four children. Marlene moved to Cranbrook upon her retirement in 2005 to be closer to her family and soon became a well known and much loved member of the community. Marlene was committed to volunteering and for many years served as the Cranbrook Hospital Auxiliary Membership Coordinator, in addition to volunteering at the Hospital Gift Shop and Auxiliary Thrift Store where she met many dear friends. Marlene loved nothing more than to spend time with her family. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were first and foremost in her heart. Always active, Marlene also spent many enjoyable hours with her friends at the Cranbrook Curling Club; the ladies at Mission Hills Golf course; and with her friends in the community walking and hiking groups; where she developed many close relationships. Marlene was an avid reader, had a passion for gardening and enjoyed travelling. She also loved the outdoors; whether it was snowmobiling, bike-riding, canoeing, fishing or snowshoeing, she was always up for fun. Her boundless energy and youthful spirit will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. An intimate family gathering took place on Friday, September 5, 2014. The family also plans to have an open house in celebration of Marlene’s life; however, the date of which will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marlene’s name to the Cranbrook Hospital Auxiliary. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Back to School & Registrations Sign up for a new class and you will soon expand your horizons
Mastering new skills, discovering unsuspected talents, and broadening our horizons — learning to be more open to the world by expanding our knowledge is what most of us aspire to. What if this year you dared to turn your secret dreams into reality? You may be surprised to see just how far it takes you! One thing is certain: acquiring new knowledge starts by sign-
ing up for a class or a training session (or workshop, conference, or seminar). Taking the leap often requires a bit of courage, and excuses such as lack of time and funds are easy to tout as reasons for putting off the initial move. But what if the real reason for saying “maybe next year” is because you’re afraid you just aren’t capable of learning something
new? Perhaps this year it’s time to change your tune. Instead of indulging your fear of failure with all those negative what-if’s, why not try a brave “what if I just give it a try?” or a “what if I love it?” To help build your courage, the first thing to do is to make a list of all the things you’d love to learn. It might be that you’ve always

▾ MYTH: Once kids join a gang there’s no hope for them: Reality: With quick family, school, and police intervention, a youth can leave the gang without any serious consequences. They key is a coordinated and collaborative intervention as soon as some of the warning signs appear. Better yet, everyone needs to work together to prevent youth and young adults from joining gangs.

wanted to play the guitar, master the different swimming strokes, or try cooking, singing, or dancing. After that, all you have to do is register for a class. It’s as simple as that! Of course, you might eventually realize that you’re not the next Jimi Hendrix or Martha Stewart of this world, but so what? Everyone
has their limits. What is important is to give yourself the means of expanding yours, of outdoing yourself and learning new things. The sense of pride you feel will make you realize just how rewarding taking a chance can be. So, what are you going to dare to accomplish this year?

Back to School & Registrations Five reasons to join an exercise class Submitted Everyone knows the many advantages of regular exercise and yet many of us still hesitate when the time comes to register for classes. Here are five reasons that will convince you to get up and sign up. 1. Classes for everyone Whether it’s to get in shape, regain cardio fitness, maintain your weight, or develop your muscle tone, you’re bound to find the right class for your needs. 2. Classes for all kinds of interests Individual or team sports, weight training or cardiovascular exercise, on terra firma or in the water — exercise classes are more plentiful and varied than ever before! 3. Classes available every hour of the day, or almost! Schedules are usually designed to meet the needs of every kind of lifestyle, even those of busy mothers, nightshift workers, and students. That kind of flexibility makes it possible to plan a session in the morning before going to the office, at lunchtime, or in the evening once the children are in bed. 4. Classes to surpass yourself Practising a sport allows you to push yourself to your limits and surpass what you thought you were capable of. Being active is also the best way to let off steam, relax, and forget day-to-day problems. 5. Classes for socializing Whether you’re at the gym, the pool, on a running track, or in a dance studio, exercise classes unite people with the same interests and objectives. Getting to know other people can definitely be an extra source of motivation to take a class. So, are you convinced? In that case all that’s left to do is register — on the run, of course!

Art classes can let you express your inner self. Are you a rightbrained creative type? Are all your five sen ses constantly at work? Does “artsy” leap to mind whenever people think of you? Does the word “imaginative” describe you to a T? If yes, then there’s no doubt that art classes
were made for you. Don’t worry; even if you haven’t yet discovered your inner artist, creative workshops are available for every type of level and ability. There’s no discrimination where creating is concerned, whether you’ve got the talent

of Leonardo da Vinci or not! Just remember that expressing yourself creatively is a great way to destress and expand your intellect. So, you’re genuinely interested in the arts but you’re not at all sure what type of class you’d like to sign up for? To give you some ideas, there are nine main art forms: architecture, sculpture, visual arts (drawing, painting), music, literature (including poetry), performing arts (dance, theatre, mime, circus), film/radio/television, photography, and comic strips. There is an ongoing debate concerning the existence of a tenth art form, with many modern artistic modes of expression wishing to claim a place on this list — they include such fields as the culinary arts, digital arts, graphic arts, comedy, and model making. So, which class will you be taking this spring? With all these suggestions, as well as the many different sub types that exist among the different art forms, it’s impossible not to find some sort of inspiration. All you need to do now is fill out the registration forms and find yourself a good pencil. Or a pen. Or a brush. Or a stick of charcoal.
