By: Will Johnson The Ponderosa Music Festival is returning for a second year.

The Rock Creek event, which was founded by Kia Zahrabi and Kris Hargrave last year, will feature musical acts, vendors, yoga, hiking and pancakes brunches.

It takes place at the Rock Creek fairgrounds from August 22 to 24.

“We’re really looking to step it up this year,” said Zahrabi. “We’re trying to get the word out. This year we’re really focusing on the music. We live in Vancouver, and we’ve been talking to people in the music scene, and they’re stoked about this lineup.”

“It’s definitely a party-type festival and a listening-type festival,” said Zahrabi.

“I’d call it a family-friendly event, we’re making it an all-ages kind of vibe. But we’re trying to attract a more mature crowd.”

Last year there was between 300 and 400 participants in the festival. Organizers are predicting that number could rise dramatically. They’ve moved the date from the Labour Day long weekend to take advantage of residents’ summer schedules.

“

Rather than playing the electronic dance music preferred by other festivals in the area, Ponderosa has decided to take a different approach.

“We’re a lot more band-focused. We’ve got different genres too. It’s not like the big festivals in Squamish and Pemberton, where one of the main prerogatives is to go get messed up and hang out in beer gardens. That’s not our focus. The focus is the music.”

Zahrabi said last year many of the participants spent the majority of the day sitting in the Kettle River, enjoying the tunes from a distance.

“It was hard to get people out of the river. They were all sitting there in the sun, in the water, just having the best time,” he said.

TURNS 17 Headliners include international superstar Moby The Shambhala Music Festival turns 17 this year, and organizers are celebrating with one of their most exciting lineups yet.

“From what we’ve been hearing, we might be one of the best electronic dance music festival lineups of the summer,” said communications director Mitchell Scott.

“We’ve been seeing reviews all across North America and globally. They’ve been saying this is one of the most diverse, eclectic EDM lineups out there.”

The festival runs from August 8 to 11, and attracts approximately 10,000 festivalgoers a year. This year there will be over 300 musical acts, including international superstar Moby.

“That’s an interesting one,” said Scott.

“Moby actually reached out to the festival himself. He heard it was a cool venue, and he heard a lot of good things. He said he wanted to come up and see what it was like for himself. That was pretty neat.”

Scott said the festival has a number of recurring acts that return every year, such as Bassnectar.

“He’s been playing here for at least 10 years, He’s a mainstay, a huge international act. The guy sells out stadiums. And he loves coming back to Shambhala (Music Festival),” said Scott.

“It’d be weird to have a Shambhala (Music Festival) without Bassnectar, that’s for sure.”

Other headliners include Sticky Butts, Matt the Alien, Smalltown DJs, Datsick and Excision.

Meanwhile, local acts will get a chance to play alongside these superstars. Some of the Kootenay acts that will be taking the stage include Adham Shaikh, Meow Mix, Just B, Cap’n Fuzz & Ajax, Jorma, Erica Dee, Audio Architch, Bryx, Gisto & M3 and Sweet Pickle.

Scott said the festival doesn’t take its cues from competitors like Coachella.

Instead, they lead by example.

“Shambhala (Music Festival) isn’t aspiring to be anything other than exactly what it is,” said Scott. “We’ve got our own trajectory. We’re being copied all across North America, but we’re not taking leads from anyone else,” he said, pointing out that the Electric Forest Festival in Maine and the Lightning in a Bottle Festival in Northern California are both modelled on the festival’s ethos.

He said they are a routinely sold-out extravaganza and more akin to Burning Man, where participants feel fierce loyalty to the annual event and are passionate about creating a temporary, transient community that embraces all sorts of activities — including art, yoga, meditation circles and experimental dance.

Many simply attend for the atmosphere and the sense of belonging, and others volunteer to earn their tickets. By the time the first musician steps on stage on August 8, the festival workforce will have ballooned to 2,500 people.

“A lot of people from the community, we’re talking all ages and demographic, volunteer and serve every year,” said Scott. “We feel really embraced by the people of Salmo and the whole Kootenay region.”

Scott said the event is a boon to local business, since festival-goers tend to stay in local hotels, spend money at local businesses and remain in the area to camp and tour long after the speakers have been turned off.

“You look at how much money these people are bringing in? Ryan Martin at the Hume Hotel told me it’s his busiest time of year.”

That’s not to mention the various financial contributions the owners have made to the Kootenay region, including one that made the construction of the newly renovated, 108-seat theatre at the Tenth Street

campus of Selkirk College (now called the Selkirk College Shambhala Music and Performance Hall) possible. The festival also contributed $15,000 to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation’s campaign to raise money for the purchase of a CT scanner.

Participants this year can expect the Health & Well Being Zone to be open 24 hours a day. There’s also a safe haven called The Sanctuary nestled in a grove of old growth trees that provides a quiet place to rest for those incapable of coping with the festival stimulus. Options for Sexual Health, a non-profit, will also have a booth nearby.

New this year is the Women’s Safe Space, for any female concert-goers who have disclosed an assault. The female professionals there are trained in crisis intervention and have the resources to help. It will also be open 24 hours a day.

But Shambhala Music Festival’s greatest asset is its location, said Scott, and the fact they’ll never have to move. The continuity has allowed them to build infrastructure that other festivals can only dream of.

“We’ve got one of the best festival venues in the world here. Where it is, the privacy it affords, how organically it was built up over time…really, there’s nothing else like it out there.”

TOUCHSTONES OPENING AUG 16 Zeljko Kujundzic and the Early Years of the Kootenay School of the Arts It was 1960, the beginning of the Age of Aquarius.

Zeljko Kujundzic, a fifth generation artist from former Yugoslavia with a sometimes fiery disposition, was hired as the first principal of the newly formed Kootenay School of the Arts. For the next four years, he would impart rigorous studio practices inspired by his Eurpean training. Kujundzic taught his students to make their own art materials using locally sourced clay for sculpture, mineral pigments for mixing paints and metals for jewellery. Although a relatively short time, it marked the beginnings not only of KSA, but perhaps also of Nelson’s reinvention as the “Best Little Arts Town” in Canada.

With his bold lines, iconic imagery and strong compositions, Kujundzic’s own practice was a reflection not only of his own sensibility, but of the times themselves. Join us for this retrospective exhibit that explores Kujundzic’s diverse artistic practices, and traces the beginnings of the now iconic Kootenay School of the Arts.

DREAM TEAM OF MUSICIANS ASSEMBLE FOR CHICAGO COVERS

W

hen Rick Lingard set out to assemble a group of 12 musicians to cover the music of iconic 70s rock band Chicago, he knew it would only work if he could get exactly the right people.

Colin Spence, guitarist Darren Mahe and bassist Doug Stephenson round out the band, while singers Melody Diachun, Arron Nelson, Lisa Backus, and Sydney Black provide lead vocals.

“I wouldn’t have done it otherwise,” said Lingard, who was ultimately successful in his endeavour. Now, after hours of transcribing the music and organizing rehearsal schedules, the 12-person super-group is set to hit the Kootenays for two summer concerts on August 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. The group will play in the newly air-conditioned Civic Theatre.

“I’ve worked with every one of them before. I knew the guys I wanted to get. I made the call, crossed my fingers and they all said yes.”

They will also be performing at the Kaslo Jazz Festival.

Lingard said this is a one-time collaboration, and there’s no guarantee they’ll ever be able to reassemble. He said Chicago’s music has had a huge influence on him since childhood, and he’s excited by the chance to tackle a musical project so complex.

The tribute band, which goes by the name 25 or 6 to 4 (the name of a popular Chicago tune), is driven by a four-person horn section consisting of Keith Todd on trombone, Tim Bullen and David Ward on trumpet, and Lingard on sax and vocals.

“Nobody’s done it around here. The music is really challenging,” he said.

“The bass lines are brutal, the drum parts are brutal, all the horn parts are brutal. The vocal arrangements are super tight and really tough. Time signatures change like crazy,” he said.

He made the decision to only play music dating from Chicago’s genesis to 1975.

“It’s such a luxury to have four of us together,” she said. “It’s really rare to get to work with this many talented people at once.”

“I grew up hearing this stuff coming from my older brother Ed’s bedroom.

I grew up in the 80s, so I was more familiar with the David Foster influence and the newer Chicago, not now we’re doing all the early stuff,” said Ferraro, who was thrilled to be given the chance to join the ensemble.

She said the material was extremely challenging vocally.

“I’m really welcoming this challenge,” he said. “I got to admit, I knew it was going to be a lot of work, and thankfully I’m a busy musician in the area, but ultimately the selling point was the personnel of the band. That made it hard to say no.”

“Our audiences will hear hits that will bring them right back to the 70s, plus there will be a few songs in there they might not recognize. People are used to the super-duper radio hits, but there’s a few that are like ‘oh, I’ve heard that before but never realized that was Chicago’,” she said.

Ferraro said his goal is to do Chicago’s music justice.

“I want to honour them,” he said.

Singer Diachun said she’s welcoming the chance to sing along with others, since she usually tours alone.

“When you go into all the inner parts of Chicago’s harmonies, it’s a lot more difficult than you might imagine.”

She praised Lingard for his efforts transcribing the music. She said the team wouldn’t exist without him.

“They’ll be singing along from beginning to end.”

What in life can be better than an ice cold beer on the beach on a hot summer day? It’s really why we hold these two months in such high regard.

They are some of the best moments of our year those days on the beach.

This month we want to focus on those perfect beers for those exceptional days.

Not to get all preachy here in an article about craft beer, but please when it comes to the beach leave the glass at home! Once a bottle or glass has been smashed on a beach it will be there until it ends up in a child’s foot, one shard at a time. The answer is the can, and more and more world class BC craft beers have found their way into the can as people have come to realize that the package really doesn’t matter, only the product within.

percentage lowered then 6.5% vol.alc but in the last few years a new breed has emerged, the India Session Ale or the ISA. One of the first out of the gate a couple years ago was the NBC Hopgood. This summer Central City released their own at a non stagger inducing 4% vol.alc and it has been a huge hit for them. Not everyone wants a high alcohol beer and especially in the summer when you may be spending a day on the beach or boat with pint in hand and you’d rather not be sleeping by 5 p.m.

The ISA has an amazing nose followed by a lean hop character and bit of a lingering.

Still though a great option for a day in the sun, with a 4% beer that actually has flavor.

Up against the big label light beers this one is light years ahead. cans has been ordered and we’ll keep this runaway hit on shelves around BC until October. It’s a perfect summer beer, crisp light ginger bite with lemon grass and honey to offset the ginger and fill it out.

“It’s always about the story,” Sal D’Angelo agreed. We were talking about a book project I have going, my pal Sal and I, when I stopped in to pick up a case of Sal’s excellent wine at his Naramata tasting room.

“Did I ever tell you the story about how I discovered ML?” he grinned. We were on the subject of wine, so I deduced that the reference was to malolactic fermentation. I was in a bit of a hurry, but I wasn’t about to walk away from one of Sal’s tales. He’s one of my favourite people in the wine business and I usually stay at the D’Angelo Estate Winery B&B when I am in the area.

First, though, about ML, as Sal calls it. This secondary, and most often desirable, fermentation takes place when temperature and bacteria conditions are right.

In the process, harsher malic acids are converted to softer lactic acids. The results are more stable, softer, fuller and more complex wines that can also include a buttery flavour. MLF, as my reference books call it, is used most commonly in reds, but it was the very process that made Chardonnays so popular in the 1980s and 1990s. If ever there was proof that there can be too much of a good thing, that was it. “I had just bought my first house and I even had a wine-making facility,” Sal began. He lived in Southern Ontario then, and would go on to become an electrician, college instructor and then a winery owner. Today he has wineries in Amherstburg, Ontario and Naramata, and has the only family operation to run wineries in both provinces. Growing up in an Italian family, winemaking came naturally to him.

“I decided to move two barrels of wine to my place from my dad’s. After all, I had a “facility”, not just a garage like my dad,” he grinned.

Sal enlisted the help of his brother Danny. They planned the operation for an afternoon in which their dad would be at work, going on the theory that it is better to ask for forgiveness than for permission. They arrived at the house in Sal’s pickup and Danny just had to ask. “How are we going to do this?”

Sal had it all figured out. They would siphon the contents of the barrels into buckets, load the empty barrels into the back of the pickup, funnel the wine back into the barrels, drive to Sal’s new house, siphon the wine out of the barrels, move them into his “facility” and refill them with the wine. It sounds like a lot of work, but the brothers got at it, snacking on cheese and prosciutto and washing it down with the occasional glass of wine while siphoning.

Eventually, the shift of the wine into the truck box was complete and Sal was just tidying up to remove any evidence of their presence when Danny scrunched up his face and asked, “What’s that sound?”

At first Sal couldn’t hear it, but a soft, persistent hiss grew louder and finally he leaned over the back of his truck to try to pinpoint the source.

“Then it blew,” he said. “The bung shot up in the air and the wine hit me square in the face. It knocked the contact lenses right out my eyes and made a geyser about 15 feet high. That’s when I discovered ML!” The brothers got to work, re-bunging the barrel and hosing down the driveway.

They drove the kilometer to Sal’s place and the rest of the operation went as planned.

Sal’s dad smelled something fishy when he got home from work that night, though. The driveway was wet. The next morning he went out to do a little more detective work and found nothing to fuel his suspicion. Until a drop of liquid hit his forehead and ran down his nose. He got out a stepladder and climbed up, finding red liquid settled into the low spots of eaves troughs.

He brought up the subject the next time he saw Sal, who had to tell the whole story.

“But now I had wine in my “facility,” he said, again making air quotes. “I would learn a lot more about malolactic fermentation over the next few years, but that’s how I discovered it.”

Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present new work

by Victorian artist Megan Dickie. Spin Off is a sculpture and video installation. The video references the format of video games; flat, multi-leveled obstacle courses that are traversed by a character who continually fails and reattempts the challenges. The video is comprised of three levels, and each level is built from large scale, absurd sculptures. The artist is the character who crisscrosses through the impediments and her own physical failure becomes the entertainment. Megan’s artist talk is Saturday August 9 at 1pm. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

June EDITION 2014 {vurb} The 2014 Nelson Artwalk takes place from now until September 1. Artists have their works on display at local businesses throughout the city. Artists taking part include: Anita Baars — Baars studied journalism and photography in Utrecht and has worked in various parts of the world as a (photo) journalist and editor for photo agencies.

Lainey Benson — Growing up, Benson never thought she would become a painter. However, painting is now a way of life. She paints daily and is forever seeking different ways to capture the scenes before her.

Castlegar Art Walk 2014 runs until September 14. It features local and regional artists and artisans, displaying work at venues around Castlegar. The following is a partial list of the artists taking part.

Barbara Legg — Legg started painting in her teens as a form of expression, never realizing it would develop into a life-long activity.

Diane Robinson — Robinson is an avid “rock-hound” and a member of the local Selkirk Rock and Mineral Club. She collects the base rocks for her trees.

Natasha Audy —Audy has been creating art in one form or another for most of her life, but currently she’s focusing primarily on acrylic painting.

The Robson Painters — On Monday evenings, when the Robson Community School is in session, a group of around seven artists can be found creating paintings with a wide variety of subjects.

Bill and Adrienne Lovely — Bill creates birdhouses from discarded license plates and pallet wood he finds on the curb, and Adrienne creates her pebble art with natural elements found along the Kootenay’s beautiful beaches.

Karen Godbout — As a photographer with a background in painting, Godbout has a particular interest in the abstract patterns of nature.

Kate Bridger — Bridger’s sources of inspiration include Northern Ontario, the Kootenays, English countryside, Tuscan villages, Greek Islands, Nelson, New Zealand, and her own backyard.

Chris Wenger — Wenger’s work is inspired by nature, wildlife, and the environment that surrounds us. Wenger uses a background knowledge as a digital artist in my pursuits to capture our environment in ways that encourage others to go out and explore the world we live in.

Gayle Edwards — Edwards is relatively new to painting having recently learned acrylic painting. Previously, when I lived in Prince George, I also took watercolour classes.

Jen Callow — Callow is a multi-disciplinary visual artist, writer and performer. Born in Victoria, she has been joyfully creating since she was old enough to hold a crayon and is largely self-taught.

Richard Dudley — Painting has allays been a passion.

Dudley devotes a sustained effort to painting landscapes.

Karen Andrea Foden— Foden’s artistic abilities remained largely undiscovered until she entered high school. One art teacher in high school taught her most of the technique and skills she still uses today.

Andrea Gardner — Gardner has her own painting and printmaking studio in her home in Nelson.

Robyn Gold — Gold hopes to inspire others to see the beauty of nature.

John Golik — Much of what Golik paints is from photographs taken while hiking in the Valhalla and Goat mountain ranges and in the Kootenay River area.

Alison Graeme — Inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds her, Graeme’s work reflects her connection to the natural world and her love for the outdoors.

Karen Guilbault — Guilbault is experimental and began her art career with Tibetan Mandala paintings in 1986.

Jennifer Hagel — Hagel is an emerging visual artist who has recently relocated back to her hometown of Nelson to pursue her art practice full-time.

Nicole Rose Hobbs — Nature allows Hobbs to appreciate the dynamic movement and change around her.

Lucas Jmieff — A self-taught maverick behind the lens, Jmieff combines progressive camera techniques, and cutting edge post processing, with the mountains, sky, water and trees of the wilderness to create spectacular works of art.

Erica Konrad —Konrad is mostly self taught and is currently working primarily in encaustic (wax and tree sap), having attended international workshops on the encaustic process.

Cindy Moser — Moser is still exploring various mediums; both representational and abstract styles intrigue her. Currently her imaginings are realized through painting, mixed media, assemblage and altered books.

Rielle Oswald — Oswald has created a series from leftovers that perhaps resemble landscapes. In the studio the raw canvas is spattered, walked on, dropped, folded, and painted on.

Tea Preville — Preville’s studio work is inspired from found objects, en-plein-air studies, photographs and imagination.

Tia Reyden — Pencil portraits were Reyden’s main outlet till she picked up the paintbrush after the birth of her first son.

Sheryl Sawchuk — Drawing and artwork remained a constant in Sawchuck’s life throughout school and as a hobby as she entered the workforce.

Margo Saunders — Photography has been one of the most important parts of Saunders’ life since childhood. She joined the West Kootenay Camera Club to learn from her peers and am continually impressed by my fellow members’ talent and knowledge

Bryn Stevenson — Stevenson works mostly with a knife and feels somewhat like an instrument letting the knife and paint create the natural patterns and thick, rough textures of mountains.

Aileen Toews — Toews favourite thing to paint is nature, especially birds, animals, landscapes and lighthouses.

Claire Wensveen — Drawing from fairy tales and mythological stories and Children’s Literature that she enjoyed since childhood, Wensveen creates unreal or imaginary situations.
