However, the Denali offers most of the same features as the more expensive Cadillac Escalade but is more use-friendly and less expensive.

s the owner of Tantalus Vineyards, Jane Hatch may concentrate on refining her Riesling. But when she acquired a property with eight apple trees, it wasn’t grapes gnawing at her conscience. “I picked an 800pound bin of apples and had it pressed for juice and still had a lot of fruit left over on the trees,” she said. “That was a real concern to me. I wasn’t sure what we were going to do with them and it felt terribly wasteful to just let

them fall on the ground.” A little research produced a phone number for the Okanagan Tree Fruit Project. Now in its third season, the phenomenally successful gleaning initiative-cum-non-profit organization has managed to significantly out-pick established organizations in the Lower Mainland, though it boasts only a two-person board, a parttime co-ordinator and has just landed its first pot of grant dollars. It’s initial mission was simple: Feed the hungry with backyard fruit that would otherwise go to

waste. Yet, as the tight crew of founders venture into vegetables, connect with farmers and network with organizations which serve needy families and provide marginalized individuals with meaningful work, they are fast becoming much more. “I feel like this year was the turning point,” said Casey Hamilton, president of the board of directors which recently solidified after splitting from the Central Okanagan Food Policy Council. Fostered as a committee of the council, the pro-

ject was developed by Hamilton, a dietitian who was working for the Interior Health Authority at the time, and a handful of her dietetic interns. As the interns moved on, she connected with a former business analyst for Tetley Tea and Safeway, Jane Kellet, and an international relations student well-versed in food security issues, Ailsa Beischer, and the committee blossomed to a full-blown organization. As of this summer, Beischer is a seasonal, though full-time employee, and there are 300 people who volunteer routinely with expecta-

tions of picking nearly 20,000 pounds of fruit by year’s end. “I think there’s an unmet need here,” said Hamilton. “We have received tons of phone calls from all over the Okanagan from people wanting us to pick fruit and we would love to expand and explore those opportunities.” Like any new venture, the challenges are as plentiful as the potential. How the food will be distributed provides an ongoing debate, for example. A little goes to the pickers. A little goes to the owners of the fruit or

vegetables on offer and a good chunk goes to a long list of charitable organizations from the Kelowna Food Bank to The Living Positive Resource Centre to the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs. “We’re trying to keep it loose and flexible and see what works for this community,” Hamilton explained. Many organizations set hard-and-fast one-third, one-third, onethird policies. Hauling in some 17,700 pounds of food last year, with 10,000 pounds under its belt this season and the heavy harvest still to come—

apples, filberts, walnuts and potatoes—those in need have taken notice. Although it distributes to organizations not individuals, the calls from low-income families have started and the group has had to creatively adapt to each situation. “It’s a complex area, food insecurity,” said Hamilton. “People who are living in poverty are there for a lot of reasons. Some are there because of unfortunate circumstance and some are there because it’s a multi-gen-

does do is it provides access to fresh, healthy food for people who can’t afford to buy it or who can’t afford to buy enough of it.” The vision for the organization includes a social enterprise business, which could produce a value-added product from its harvest—or a few. The group wants to employ the socially and economically marginalized individuals it is already working with and find a stable funding base, without grant dollars. Last November, Beischer won it a $3,000 prize at Okanagan Change UP 2013, a competition put on by Okanagan Changemakers to foster social enterprise organizations and businesses. The group is hoping to start research to make its venture happen this fall. In the meantime, they’ve won the confidence of the City of Kelowna and Central Okanagan Foundation, which each awarded the project funds for the first time this

had no idea such a thing existed. For now, they’ve drawn their geographical line at Penticton. One other gleaning organization, Okanagan Gleaners, harvests fruit throughout the valley, processing it into soups and shipping it to developing nations. ject, but wants her organization to chart a different trajectory—serving the local community, targeting inclusiveness at every turn. She’s reaching out to organizations working with marginalized members of society, like those with mental illness specifically, to encourage this style of growth. This fall, they will work with Cool Arts, an organization providing arts opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities, on a project called Re-Produce. Cool Arts artists have gleaned two batches of plums and will soon be doing apples. Along the way, they are sketching the fruit, creating fruit-inspired pottery with the Potter’s Addict Ceramic Art Centre and photographing their work. It will all go on display at the Grow Local Fair in October at the B.C. Orchard Industry Museum. As Cool Arts executive director, Rena Warren explains the project as a hands-on experience targeted at community learning. The community learns about harvesting and the abilities of those with developmental disabilities. The Cool Arts participants learn about food and where it comes from, and they take some home along the way. She loves the Okanagan Fruit Tree Project’s approach to community development. “Rather than just sit here, I am going to lend a helping hand, the way (the project) is working provides people with more dignity as they’re involved in the process,” she said. Hamilton intends to keep it this way. The Okanagan Fruit Tree Project is on Facebook and is always looking for volunteers and fruit or vegetables to pick in the Central Okanagan or Penticton.

Distillery wins fight over bear brand Kathy Michaels STAFF REPORTER

Kelowna businessman Mike Urban won a court case Tuesday that, if lost, could have crushed his business. The federal court sided with Urban in a four-year-long trademark dispute between Urban Distilleries and the City of Terrace, which filed a lawsuit alongside the Kitasoo Band Council. “This was the best news ever,” he said Thursday. “I fought it, and I’m glad I did.” At issue, was the Spirit Bear brand. Urban trademarked Spirit Bear vodka in 2010, but the band and the City of Terrace challenged his right to use the name, claiming they previously trademarked it in 2003 and 2006. Their claim of the brand was seemingly for licensing purposes, from which they garnered royalties, although they also claimed concerns about the way Urban wanted to use the name. “The Spirit Bear is associated with this part of B.C. and the City of Terrace wants to continue to maintain the uniqueness of its trademark,” said Terrace Mayor Dave Pernarowski about the trademark infringement lawsuit filed against Urban Distilleries. “Sometimes you have to push a little bit, particu-

larly when it’s being used on a product that isn’t the best representation for a special creature.” The court found that both the City of Terrace and Kitasoo Band council’s official trademark for Spirit Bear were invalid, having been improperly registered. In particular the judge found the Spirit Bear trademarks had not been properly adopted. For their failed efforts, the City of Terrace and Kitasoo Band Council were also ordered to pay costs to Urban Distillery. It will be a huge benefit for Urban, who expressed concerns that the legal battle would sink the company. He went so far as to ask the community to help fund his legal battle, last December. “The community support was great, and I’m thankful for that,” he said, noting that the support was mostly in spirit, not dollars. Now, however, he can begin the work needed to expand his presence in the craft distillery market. “I can get on with my business the way I should have previously,” he said. “I had a lot of different products I put on hold and couldn’t release until this was over…I didn’t want to put anything into research and development or build new moulds because there was a slight chance I wouldn’t win,

and then I would have killed the whole company.” The judgement also reinforces Urban’s belief that he was helping promote the protection of the creature. The Mustang travelled at high speed dangerously through a residential and school zone area, almost hitting two pedestrians crossing the street, added Brett. “When I realized there were pedestrians at the crosswalk, as well as an active school in session, I quickly turned off my lights and sirens and stopped at the side of the road. I was concerned for the safety of those in the neighbourhood,” said

Minutes after the vehicle fled, two women matching the descriptions of the pair the officer saw in the Mustang were walking down the street, just a short distance away from where the car was found. Herman identified both women and it was confirmed they were wanted on outstanding Canada-wide warrants for parole violations. The 53-year-old driver faces further charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Both she and the 35-year-old were taken into custody to appear in court.

Quesnel crash claims two Kelowna people A fatal collision in Quesnel claimed three lives Thursday, two of whom were from Kelowna. Quesnel RCMP received a report shortly after 7 a.m. on Thursday, of a head-on collision on Highway 97 south of Sales Road. The investigation determined that a pickup truck travelling northbound crossed the centre line colliding head-on with a southbound sport utility vehicle. The collision claimed the lives of the 48-yearold male driver of the pickup truck from Kelowna, the 73-year-old female driver of the SUV from New Hazelton and her 70-year-old female passenger, who was also from Kelowna. All were pronounced dead at the scene. Quesnel RCMP investigators are being assisted by a North District traffic services collision reconstructionist and a traffic analyst, who were at the scene Thursday afternoon. The cause of the collision is still under investigation but alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Weather conditions at the time of the collision were cool with very dense fog and limited visibility.

Government considering help for senior secondary students Jeff Nagel BC LOCAL NEWS

Education Minister Peter Fassbender says the province may take extraordinary steps to ensure senior secondary students’ school year is not cut short by the teachers strike. That could mean adding days to the school calendar later in the year, he said, to ensure Grade 12 students in particular complete their courses and get all the marks they need. “Do you put it on the end of the year? Do you take it out of spring break? Do you take it out of Christmas holidays? My staff are looking at all of the options,” Fassbender said. “It’s going to depend on how long this drags out. Whatever length of time it takes to get this settled, we will do everything we can to make sure the school year is kept whole for those students.” It’s unclear how the government would finance adding extra days of classes later when all of the $12 million per day in strike savings may be consumed by the province’s offer of $40-a-day payments to parents. “If they were accumulating the savings, that would be one thing— they would have a fund,” Vancouver School Board chair Patti Bacchus said. “But they’re giving away the budget right now to parents that would be otherwise available to pay for that.” As of Thursday, 63 per cent of parents of eligible public school children under 13 had signed up for the $40 payments, which are expected to be made as a lump sum after the strike ends. Other costs that the province continues to incur while schools are

closed include salaries for school administration as well as support staff with other unions that are eligible to be compensated for pay lost for not crossing teacher picket lines. Support staff costs could hit $5 million a day once all their union locals ratify new contracts. Education ministry officials said school districts would be consulted on any potential changes to the school year to mitigate the strike. But Bacchus said she’s heard nothing so far and predicted it would be disruptive to families that have booked vacations and made other commitments far in advance. “It’s not going to be easy,” she said, noting changes would also require exemptions from School Act requirements. Talk of calendar adjustments is another sign of possible long-term implications from the strike, even though it has only disrupted the first few days of the new school year. Parents have scrambled for limited space for child care, day camps, tutors and even private school placements for their children. Stepping up to meet the demand have been independent schools and, increasingly, public school teachers no longer drawing a regular paycheque who are advertising “tutor” services online. “I work for the Surrey School District and I am willing to tutor your child in the comfort of your own home,” reads one Craigslist post from an elementary school teacher. Distance learning through independent online schools is another option. The B.C. Online School, run out of Ke-

lowna by Heritage Christian Schools, has been swamped with three times the normal number of applications for distributed learning from students across the province as a result of the strike. “We are overloaded with kids coming to us, particularly those in Grade 12 who want to get a particular course and get their requirements for university,” said superintendent Greg Bitgood. The online school, which is half funded by the province, instructed

3,400 students in its summer school—three times the normal number— and turned away another 6,000. Demand has surged again now that the strike has spilled into September and pushed back the scheduled start of classes. Bitgood is weighing whether to hire more teachers in response. But it’s risky because a deal or government legislation could send teachers back to work and students back to regular classes, said Bitgood, who em-

Kelowna Secondary School student Jeremy Becker has found a productive way to spend the first week of Grade12. Using his entrepreneurial endeavour Taste Locally, he’s launched a fundraiser aimed at helping single parents cope with the cost associated with the ongoing labour strife between the province and teachers. “I know first hand how much this strike sucks, but I can’t imagine the financial burden on single parents,” he said. The fundraiser was conceived earlier this week, and is still in its fledgling stages. Becker has high hopes that he’ll be able to use the cards to give back to the community.

He has already seen success in the fundraising model. Taste Locally is a deck of cards where business deals are featured. The businesses profiled don’t buy the space in the deck, and they merely ante up some services in exchange for the publicity. The money is made in the sale, and plenty are sold. Organizations use the cards to fundraise. For $25, buyers get a deck of deals, and the fundraising organization makes $7 per sale, which is a higher portion of profit than the norm. The annual fun originally started as a spontaneous gathering of musicians that I managed, promoted, ran light shows for, or plunked along with years before. It has slowly evolved into a much bigger bash over the years and while many marvel at the amount of musicians involved—in fairness it began as their party. For the past six years Teresa has been the real wind behind the sails of

event and making sure the yard and house are as presentable as possible. When the party is finally complete it takes both of us about a week to recover from exhaustion. Actually, the barbecue was the pre-cursor to the annual Night of the Arts fundraiser which Curtis Tulman and I have organized for a decade now. On Nov. 7 this year we will celebrate the 10th annual (and final) Night of the Arts event at the Kelowna Community Theatre—and a number of the stars on stage will be the same characters Jim listened to on the long weekend. Indeed this year’s wrap up fund raiser for the homeless and those dealing with addictions promises to the best NOTA event yet. Already confirmed to play in November are Deb Stone, Keith ‘Poppa’ Thom, and a reunion of the hugely successful and popular Cruzeros. Two other main acts will be confirmed this week. Make sure and pencil in date on your calendar

UBC poet in running for top poetry prize Emily Nilsen is in good company. Nilsen, a master of fine arts student at UBC’s Okanagan campus, has been long-listed for CBC’s annual poetry prize. Nilsen, from Nelson, BC, is listed with 37 other poets as the best of the bards in this year’s contest. The shortlist will be announced September 8 and the grand prize will be awarded at the end of this month. Two of Nilsen’s poems, As We Bend and Three Poems, were selected from hundreds of submissions to the annual national poetry contest. This is the first time Nilsen, who has been writing poetry since she was in fifth grade, has entered the contest and she’s excited to be long-listed. The grand prize winner will receive $6,000

BC Hydro meter found not at fault for causing fire

To the editor: Some misinformation was recently published in your paper about a fire that occurred last week in Langford on Vancouver Island. (Smart Meters May Be Cause of Some House Fires, Sept. 2 Capital News.) The Langford Fire Department investigated the incident and confirmed publicly that the cause was not electrical or related to BC Hydro’s meter. BC Hydro has installed 1.9 million new meters over the last three

years and they have a proven safety record. BC Hydro’s new meters have undergone thorough quality assurance testing by both the meter manufacturer and BC Hydro to ensure they are safe, accurate and reliable. There is no evidence a BC Hydro smart meter has ever been the cause of a fire in British Columbia. In fact, research by the University of the Fraser Valley shows that there have been fewer residential structure fires associated with electricity in

British Columbia since BC Hydro started installing smart meters in 2011. This is because BC Hydro has repaired more than 3,000 pre-existing unsafe meter socket conditions on customers’ homes at no cost to the home owner during our installations. Polley fish already had high chemical readings

To the editor: It has recently been reported that the gonads and livers from fish taken from Polley Lake [Location of tailings pond dam breach] contain higher levels of metals than gonads and livers taken from fish elsewhere in the province, particularly for the element selenium. However, it should be pointed out that this has a lot more to do with lo-

cal geology than it does with the recent breach at the Mount Polley tailings pond: Elevated levels are to be expected at this location. In every corner of the planet, local rocks dictate local soil and water chemistry; and mines, for obvious reasons, are located where rocks contain elevated levels of metals. It should not be a surprise, then, that the metal con-

centrations in water bodies such as Quesnel and Polley lakes, located near to significant metal deposits, are going to be greater than in bodies of water found elsewhere in the province. For example, elevated levels of selenium were found in the flesh, gonads and livers of fish taken from Polley Lake long before the dam was breached. These elevat-

ed levels were noted in a 2013 report that also showed slightly higher levels of arsenic, copper, manganese and zinc compared to fish from 54 other lakes around the province. However, all of the fish were within the guidelines for human consumption. Not to put too fine a point on it, the Interior Health Authority and the Ministry of Environment have stated that fish from

o lead people, walk beside them; As for our best leaders, the people do not notice their existence; and, when the best leaders’ work is done, the people will say, ‘We did it ourselves.’” I find myself these days never feeling tired to speak about the glory of leadership in our entrepreneurial society—in fact, reading the gentleman cited below prompted me to add value to my personal and professional life as well as insert the element of “entrepreneurial leadership” into the core mandate of our Okanagan Valley Entrepreneurs Society at www.OVES.org. Wonderful phrases all that touch the core essence of what leadership, any form of leadership is about. Lately I have enjoyed reading several books written by Dr. John C. Maxwell, an international author and

Joel Young speaker on leadership. First, leadership is fundamental to entrepreneurship and, of course, in life, there are many ways to look at the roles and positions of leadership. Some people believe that leaders are born and come to a position of influence by virtue of the unique attributes they possess. But, no matter how we might wish to choose and accept from such definitions of leadership—there is a new game in town pertaining to world of entrepreneurial pursuit. Since the 1980’s, an increased level of entrepreneurial activity has spawned, not only because of the electronics age, but, due to a plethora of new products, materials, financial networks, joint venture potential and, changes in politics, economics and societies. Thus, it is imperative for anyone involved in entrepreneurial venture creation, especially the individual entrepreneur, to fully comprehend and embrace the importance

of sound leadership modalities and their association to “change.” The basis for defining and understanding entrepreneurs has created a challenging problem for many years for researchers and practitioners alike. Even to-day, the struggle continues for an accepted definition of an entrepreneur . Then, we must recognize and include a seemingly never-ending definition of “ entrepreneurship “ itself and, I am not going to take that on for today, but, only to declare that taking the “ boatride “ through the entrepreneurial research corridor is often both exhilarating and exhaustive as we never seem to reach a final destination. On the surface, one can associate entrepreneurs with leadership functions such as providing vision to the development of a new product, service or organization. A leader has to be entrepreneurial as well but, entrepreneurial leadership, it has been written, deals with concepts and ideas that are often related to problems that are not of an organizational nature but rather tend to be individual characteristics or behaviours. These include: vision, problem-solving, deci-

sion-making, risk-taking and strategic initiatives. Entrepreneurial leadership has been coined by those who realize a change in leadership style is necessary in order for Canada’s businesses, both large and small, to be competitive in this ever-changing global economy. For example, and the world of technology can attest to this: that there often appears to see a shift from a producer mentality to an entrepreneurial mentality that has led to structural changes in organization and, in effect, new ways of doing business. One might also question whether entrepreneurial leadership is truly a new style of leadership, an escape from management or even both. Since the 1980’s, a concern that we’ve all witnessed has been that major businesses have seemingly lost their competitiveness through an emphasis on management…rather than leadership. Scary thought. It is therefore argued, and frankly, as a zealot of entrepreneurial thought, that the organizations of the future will be in fact, entrepreneurial in nature. Its leadership, strategies and structure will reflect entrepreneurial thinking with associated character-

It is fair to say in conclusion of this brief look at enterprising leadership that new organizational designs, new thinking patterns and new information systems will require new leadership styles. Entrepreneurial leadership offers one answer. I would like to end with the presentation of three pillars of entrepreneurial leadership for you, dear readers, to ponder and enjoy. Visionary evangelist—persuades employees to work toward his/her vision of the future. Creates, sells and drives the strategy of the organization. Serves as a spokesperson for the organization and demonstrates confidence in its potential for success Takes charge, pushes for action and instills a sense of urgency to achieve the organizations goals. Team and consensus builder—develops teamwork, alignment and motivation by involving, empowering and creating a positive work environment. Develops loyalty by investing in building relationships with others and by showing interest in employees needs, growth and development. Is open to their ideas and willing to share power. Manager of execution—provides organization, focus and clarity of direction. Good administrator, structured, disciplined, and skilled at setting short term targets and goals. Good at setting priorities and meeting commitments. Sets up systems and processes. Worries about details. Monitors results versus plans and provides the rigour and control to stay the course and corrects for deviations i.e. gets result. Which are you? What constitutes ‘serious’ when it comes to an injury? D oes an injury require broken bones to be considered serious? According to the way most people talk, including some insurance adjusters, you might think so. And the media encourage such misperceptions. Listen to, watch or read about car crashes and unless there are broken bones, or hospital stays in intensive care, reporters seem to give the impression there were no injuries. (Editors Note: Reporters don’t determine whether there were injuries or their extent, they relay information provided by police at the scene or from police reports.) The vocabulary commonly used to describe these injuries makes matters worse. How could a “soft-tissue” injury be serious? Bones are our hard-tissues and everything else in the body is soft. An injury to anything other than bone is often referred to as a “soft-tis-

Paul Hergott sue” injury. From what I’ve seen over the years in my personal injury practice, I’d take a hard-tissue injury over a soft-tissue injury any day. Bones heal remarkably well. It’s no fun having to be in a cast for a few weeks, but that’s typically all it takes to make a full recovery. Even complex fractures that require plates and screws typically heal quickly. Some soft-tissue injuries are, indeed, very minor. Take a bruise for example. After a car crash there might be bruises across your abdomen and chest, caused when your body was flung against the seat belt. Bruises resolve themselves even faster than broken bones. But what about the

stretching and tearing injuries to the muscles, ligaments and other tissues that happen in a car crash? Have you ever tried to get an elastic band to regain its shape after stretching it beyond the limits of its elasticity? I am no medical expert, but that’s the way I think about what happens when the seat belt holds most of you, but not all of you, in your seat. The parts of you that are not held still move backward and forward. Your head is one of the heaviest parts of your body. There’s nothing stopping your head from moving forward in a crash but your neck. What takes the brunt of the injury? The muscles, ligaments and other tissues that hold the hard tissues together. For most of my clients, the elastic will never regain its shape. Most of my clients face the prospect of some degree of pain and discomfort for the rest of their lives. Imagine how these people feel when their injury is referred to as just a

soft-tissue injury. I was recently consulted by a fellow who had been offered a $5,000 settlement.

WHAT RIDICULOUS SCALE COULD HAVE $5,000 AS THE TOP END OF COMPENSATION FOR WHAT COULD TURN OUT TO BE A LIFE-LONG INJURY?

The insurance adjuster told him it was just a soft-tissue injury and the offer was at the high end of compensation for soft-tissue injuries. Perhaps that explains why insurance companies make such low offers to unrepresented claimants. What ridiculous scale could have $5,000 as the top end of compensation for what could turn out to be a life-long injury? Perhaps the way the offer is presented also

explains why so many people accept those absurdly low offers. In effect, the adjuster is not just making an offer, he or she is also giving legal advice. Adding the offer is at the high end of compensation for the injury is legal advice. And that advice is dead wrong. The reality is $5,000 happens to be at the low end of compensation, very close to the bottom. What’s the high end? It would be misleading for me to throw out a figure. The greater the impact on a person’s life, the greater the compensation. A jury I appeared before made an assessment that $120,000 was fair compensation for one of my client’s pain and suffering. My client suffered only soft-tissue injuries. Yes, he had quite serious permanent symptoms, but he was still able to work

full-time. I expect his injures were described as minor by the media reporting the crash, if they were mentioned at all. Don’t be thrown by the lingo or the misperceptions. Soft-tissue injuries can be the worst kind of injury. Ensure justice is achieved by get-

New CEO at Accelerate Okanagan Accelerate Okanagan has appointed a new CEO. Pilar Portela will assume responsibilities on Sept. 16, according to the local technology-focused not-for-profit which helps tech start-up companies get off the ground. Portela replaces Jeff Keen, who stepped down to pursue an opportunity with a startup technology company. Pilar is a relative newcomer to the Okanagan after leaving SBM Site Services in Sacramento, California as its director of software development.

“It is a tremendous honour to be offered the position of CEO for Accelerate Okanagan,” she said. “As the new CEO, I am committed to doing whatever it takes to help local startups flourish.” She said the Accelerate Okanagan team will continue to encourage the creation and innovation of local technology businesses. “I am dedicated to increasing collaboration between national and international tech hubs, which in turn help local startups

flourish. The organization’s goals will continue on the current growth path, while fostering the community’s entrepreneurial climate, teach people how to be successful entrepreneurs and support companies in Accelerate Okanagan’s programs, she added. MOLOKAI, Hawaii—After we heard buzzing overhead in the thick Hawaiian jungle for the second or third time, I asked our ponytailed guide, Gregorson Rider, the source of the noise. “Helicopter?” I said. “Tours from Maui,” he replied, referring to Molokai’s famous neighbour, 15 miles to the southeast. “It’s pretty obnoxious.” It seemed especially so in that moment. Five fellow visitors from the mainland and I were deep in the lush Halawa Valley, admiring a large, sloping rock shaped something like a recliner. Rider said that, according to legend, native

women used it for giving birth 1,000 years ago. Trace his lineage back, he said, and his ancestors likely entered the world there. The helicopter buzzed away, and we continued down the dirt trail, the only noise once again our shuffling boots and the birds chirping invisibly in the trees above. We were headed to a waterfall for lunch and relaxation in Molokai’s quiet splendour. Rider told us about himself on the way. Born and raised in central Illinois, he moved back to his ancestral home of Hawaii, first working in the crowded bars of Honolulu on Oahu. He soon discovered that he longed to discover his roots, which led him to move with his teenage daughter to Molokai. He made more money in a week

of bartending than in a month of leading tours in the Halawa Valley, but he was free of regret. “The whole Western thing wasn’t for me,” Rider said. “I’m trying to walk the path as much as possible.” Molokai is the place to do it. To visit big resorts and drink colourful, umbrella-capped drinks, there are five other Hawaiian islands appropriate for that. For a taste of a Hawaii barely touched by tourism, there is Molokai. The breezes are just as sweet and the palms sway just as gently, but it is a Hawaii free of cliche: no 18-hole golf courses, no beachfront resorts and few, if any, surf lessons. The island doesn’t even have a stoplight. With the fewest annual visitors of the major

Hawaiian islands, Molokai is home to just one hotel and a handful of restaurants. There is virtually no night life and even less luxury. The lack of development leads to some sacrifices, like astronomical prices ($9 for a gallon of milk) and a less-than-scintillating restaurant scene. But it’s a more-than-worthy trade-off for the traveler who relishes long, quiet highways and unspoiled beauty. Molokai’s simplicity leads some to suggest that the island can be experienced as a day trip. That’s a sad misconception. Molokai’s pristine vistas deserve more time for exploration, not less.

Molokai Molokai from A21 The day I arrived, I met Dave Blair, a retired welder from Erie, Pa., who was winding down a week on the island with his wife. They had worked hard to be there, flying from Erie to Philadelphia to Phoenix to Maui to Molokai. No other islands were on their itinerary. “We’ve already done all that,” Blair said. “This is less commercialized, and I like that. A guy I work with, he went to Oahu, and he said, ‘I went to Hawaii.’ I said, ‘No, you went to Oahu.’” It’s a fair point. Oahu and Molokai share a history and a state flag, but that’s about it. Still, simplicity and rugged beauty continue to rule on Molokai, and that’s especially true at its most iconic site: Kalaupapa, a flat peninsula below Molokai’s towering cliffs that has only three ways down: plane (five-minute flight from the island’s main airport), mule (the most popular option) and foot (my choice). It has been a colony for leprosy patients since the mid-1800s, and on my last day, I visited. I met a couple at the trailhead from Maui visiting Molokai for the first time, and together the three of us walked down the three-mile trail, descending 1,664 feet to the peninsula, spread across the ocea. At the bottom we piled onto a rusted yellow school bus with the tourists who had come down by mule, then spent a sun-drenched, breezy afternoon riding through the village that once was home to 1,000 people but now is fewer than 100. With its dwindling population, many of Kalaupapa’s original buildings are gone; what

remains is a tidy, quiet village of modest houses and nicely trimmed lawns, along with library, convenience store, a small church, government buildings. Traffic, be it car, bicycle or foot, is rare. We spent about three hours on the peninsula, finishing up with a lunch facing a row of jagged green cliffs tumbling stunningly to a perfect blue sea. We didn’t see a single helicopter.

Molokai was undamaged in the recent storms, so there’s no concern with infrastructure. Getting there: The only flights to Molokai come from Oahu and Maui, including Mokulele Airlines (mokuleleairlines.com) and Makani Kai Air (makanikaiair.com). They generally cost about $50 one way. There is a daily passenger-only ferry from Maui (molokaiferry.com). Renting a car is a must— at Alamo at the airport and in Kaunakakai, Molokai Car Rental (molokaicars. com). Staying: Ho-

On paper, it might be the best matchup the B.C. Football Conference has to offer: The explosive, quick-hitting offense of the Langley Rams against the stingy, hard-hitting defense of the Okanagan Sun. The two forces will collide for the second time this season, as the Sun and Rams—both at 4-1— meet Saturday night at the Apple Bowl in a battle for top spot. The Rams, who put up an even 70 last weekend against Kamloops, lead the BCFC with 266 points scored this season. The Sun defense has yielded a conference-low 76 points—or just 15 per game. “It’s going to be a great matchup,” said Sun defensive coordinator Nathan Mollard. “It’s the situation you want, to be going up against the best, or at least statistically the best offense in the conference. Our defense is excited and ready for the challenge.” The Sun dropped the first meeting between the two rivals, 33-20 back on Aug. 2 in Langley. But now the ball is in

Whistle poised for top net job after two years in the wings

After two years in a supporting role in Kelowna, Jackson Whistle is ready for prime time. Moving into the No. 1 slot between the pipes for the Rockets in 2014-15 is a most welcome scenario the 19-year-old goaltender. “This will be my fourth year and I’m pretty excited to be here, to get the opportunity to be the No. 1 guy and just kind of roll with it,” said Whistle. “I feel like I’ve put a lot of work into it, so it’s nice be in this position now…I’m looking forward to it.” Following a trade to the Rockets by the Vancouver Giants in the fall of 2012, it didn’t take Whistle long to settle in as a reliable WHL back up to Jordon Cooke. Over his first two seasons in Kelowna, Whistle posted numbers more befitting a veteran stopper—a robust 33-6-1-0 record and a 2.32 goals against average. “The last two years working with (goalie coach) Kim Dillabaugh I gained a lot of confidence with the Rockets, and with the rest of the coaching staff,” said Whistle, who moved to Kelowna seven years ago. “For a goaltender, confidence is huge, so I feel like I have that on my side heading into the season.” In turn, Whistle has also gained the confidence of Rockets’ management and coaches—not just with his play over the last

Ensign Cup rugby on Saturday A longstanding sports tradition in Kelowna will take to the pitch this Saturday at the Parkinson Rec Centre. The 32nd annual Ensign Cup Benefit Rugby Game will kick off at 2:30 p.m. and will feature Kelowna’s over 30s and

under 30s. In 1983, Rusty Ensign broke his neck and was rendered a quadriplegic playing for the Kelowna Crows. The proceeds from that year’s game went to his rehabilitation. The 2013 edition of the game ended in a draw

between the over 30s and under 30s. The young lads are undefeated in four years, but the old boys hold the most wins overall by one game. This will make for a hotly-contested game with youthful pride at stake and lots of old guys

CROUCH- ALEX WILLIAM Passed away peacefully with family at his side on September 3rd after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Joan, children Joady (Larry) Davis, Monte (Lorie), Ian (Wendy), 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Predeceased by his brother Roy. Alex was born in Victoria June 18, 1925 and resided there until he enlisted in the Canadian Scottish Regiment (militia). Injuries received during active services in the Canadian Army led to an interest and future career in physiotherapy . After his training in Toronto Alex returned to set up practice in Campbell River. He formed and chaired a study group that eventually built and operated the first double corridor general hospital in Canada. Family health issues led to relocation to Kelowna in 1964 where Alex pursued a longtime passion in horticulture. He developed the first high density hedgerow planting. He returned to physio practice and care in 1978 for an additional 20 years until his retirement. Throughout these years Alex followed his keen interests in gardening and fishing while maintaining his long standing memberships with the Kelowna Golf and Country Club and Probus. 1935 ~ 2014 Evelyn Pearl passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 29, 2014 at Kelowna Hospice House at the age of 79. She is lovingly remembered by her 4 children: Sandy, Bradley (Karel), Marilyn, Penney (Nick) Samsom, 11 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Henry (Dehlia) Woods, brother Wilbert and sister Ethel. Evelyn was born in Fort Francis Ontario; she married Gerald Grennier in 1952 and settled in Atikokan, Ontario where she raised her 4 children. In her younger years she was active in woman’s softball and bowling. In 1969 she moved to Kelowna and worked for several retailers; Saan for 10 years, McLeod’s and 5 Bridges Grocery. After her retirement she took up golfing, and darts at the Legion. She enjoyed her bus trips to Casinos with her sister-in-law Joyce Lalond. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren kept her very busy knitting and crocheting, she loved every minute of it. Evelyn will be cremated and the family will have a celebration of life service at a later date. Born in North Bank, Alberta and moved at a young age to Vancouver, she lived in B.C. the rest of her life. Her interest was sharing Alex’s love of antique cars and there many road trips to California, and the love of her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren and her many friends throughout her life, especially Joyce Ellis.
