Deadline dancing proves nerve wracking

If the people at the centre of the teacher/ government duel have any real idea of the consternation stirred up over their confrontation, it hasn’t seemed to add any urgency to their efforts at gaining an agreement.

This summer which is just about to end may have seemed like a long one to those fighting wildfires, or those trying to cope with a lack of air-conditioning. But to parents of school age children the clock has likely been ticking at double time since the job action began in June.

For families, the school calendar must be adhered to. Every part of life needs to fall in place according to the school schedule for a minimum of 10 months a year.

Some families, thanks to stay-at-home parents or flexible working arrangements, can likely deal with the extended strike with a minimum of upheaval. Others, unfortunately, will have to scramble, trying to make arrangements with day care providers who will likely be swamped with enquiries. For some people there would even be the chance that a job could be lost or a child neglected.

This submission does not suggest for a moment that there is anything simple about achieving an agreement that satisfies two sides, each with widely differing agendas. But if two sides in a labour management dispute are far apart, they still need to to keep at it. Perhaps early mediation could become mandatory in this type of negotiation.

The whole unpleasant situation illustrates the scope of the issue, how deep an impact in makes in every single community in the province. It also makes an observer wonder why a lot more effort was not devoted to settling the dispute a lot earlier than the end of August.

I’ve read so many detective novels I sometimes feel like a sleuth myself, perhaps someone like Harry Bosch.

To that end, I spent some time hidden in a number of local corners, hoping to discover a few local truths.

I first assigned myself the task of following people as they strolled around the sculpture walk route. As I stood at the edge of group after group, I heard appreciation for the vision this city must have had to pursue outdoor art. Then I heard comments about how brave the organizers must have been to arrange for more than 30 sculptures the past two years.

I also learned that one sculpture stood out this year in the minds of those doing the viewing. I won’t say which one until the votes are all in, but none of this year’s efforts were as good as the “people’s choice” over the past four years. In fact, most viewers spent a lot of time standing in front of last year’s winner, “Honkfest”— the one that’s both a sculpture and a fountain. I noted one young lady rushing to get her camera to take photos of only that art work.

ition a lot. I’d like to be analytical like a Michael Connelly sleuth, but that’s not how I operate. So when I saw the painting by Barbara Legg called “Dance Wherever You May Be” on the cover of this year’s Artwalk brochure, I had a hunch I’d like all of her art work. Besides, I also enjoy dancing.

Stealthily slipping into the Castlegar News office past the poodle guard-dog, I tiptoed into the corner where Barbara Legg’s paintings were being displayed. And I was correct— the paintings here revealed a very good landscape artist doing her work in mostly acrylics and pastels.

I found out Barbara Legg lives in Brilliant, having moved from the West Coast in the 1980s. She has been painting the outdoors in a near-photographic style, but recently she has expanded her colour palette away from her favourite colour, blue.

Her work on display vividly depicted various Kootenay landscapes. I quite liked Eagle Eye View of Brilliant and Slocan Ridge Hiking Trail.

the young people digging sand and splashing water. I also noted the usual suspects swimming in the river just beyond the ponds. I asked one of them about that, and the response was the river water was warmer than the pond water. My deduction: it takes a few days to heat the well water—the ponds’ source—to a degree to make it acceptable for swimming.

After that, I stood in the shadows of one of the brick buildings at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre. I couldn’t believe how happy everyone was as they arrived for the regular board meeting. Listening at the keyhole, I learned that the centre has had a record number of summer visitors, the summer workers have done a splendid job, and the director is gearing up to put together a Verigin display in the near future. I slunk about looking for intrigue and found only success.

Arriving home after a tough day checking things out, I detected much yard work still to be completed at my own place. A practical sort of Scarpetta, I gave up the intrigue and started my lawn mower.

Time to kick the butts

Editor: Thirty billion cigarette butts are discarded in Canada every year.

CBC Radio’s program “What a Waste” spurred me to research a few facts on cigarette butt pollution, which I would like to share with others in our community.

Ninety-nine per cent of cigarettes have cellulose acetate filters which are not biodegradable. They are toxic, and while they will eventually break into small pieces, the toxic material never disappears. Research at San Diego State University has shown that the chemicals from just one filtered cigarette butt have the ability to kill half the fish living in a 1-litre container of water.

The toxic chemicals in cigarette butts leach into the soil,

destroying micro-organisms, or else they are carried into drains, and ultimately into our waterways where they are hazardous to both fresh water and salt water fish. At present it is estimated that only 10 per cent of cigarette butts end up in the landfill, which is the most desirable option. The volume of random outside disposal has naturally increased with the prevalence of indoor smoking bans. Growing concern over cigarette butt litter has prompted a number of American states and municipalities to undertake a variety of policy initiatives, even to the extent of a move towards banning filtered cigarettes.

Unfortunately cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world, as any Adopt-ARoad volunteers in Castlegar can surely confirm. We would

not wish to prohibit the individual’s right to smoke, but simply ask for consideration on the issue of butt disposal.

Cigarette butts are not litter.

They are toxic waste.

Non-smokers should not sit back at this point! Please help by ensuring that at your workplace there are ash cans provided for those who smoke.

Smokers, please do everything you can to dispose of butts, and other tobacco product litter responsibly. Pocket receptacles for cigarette butts are readily available, and are easily improvised too.

Castlegar has improved so much in its general appearance and the cleanliness of its streets, parks and beaches.

Concerns about city council shared

Editor I agree with John Phillips’ letter in the Castlegar News (August 21).

The City Council has found another waste money project to go along with coloured sidewalks, painting walls and coloured lights under overpasses that drivers will not see if they are paying attention to their driving.

In this city there are many other projects the

taxpayers’ money could be used for. We need many potholes filled (my car seems to find them all) and Castlegar needs cameras on its traffic lights. I have been told the city cannot afford them.

I am not the only one who says Castlegar needs a totally new council.

From an early age we learn to think of summer as something special, and so it should be.

But each year in Castlegar, the last 18, at least, there’s a major consolation to the end of summer.

The Pass Creek Fair is coming up this year on September 20-21 just outside Castlegar.

This year’s event will supply the community with all the great activities it’s come to expect.

The fair runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and is action packed. A delicious pancake breakfast will be served up starting at 7 a.m. on both days, getting fairgoers set for the fun ahead.

A horse show is one of the perennial favourites, as well as rides for small children, exhibits, the Dirty Diggers for a Weekend, Selkirk Lions Family Carnival and ongoing entertainment.

Organizers work hard to make the fair the attraction it is today, and spokesperson Donna Smith feels it’s an evolving event, better all the time.

“It’s something people look forward to, they get together and visit, listen to music. It’s just a really inexpensive family weekend.

“We’re always trying to improve it,” Smith said in closing on August 30. “If you haven’t been there for a couple of years, there’ll be something new that you haven’t seen.

It’s just celebrating harvest time, farming, just a time for people to get together.”

Back when some of us were younger there was something alluring about crime gangs.

History, and Hollywood had made them appealing by romanticizing the lives and exploits of figures like Al Capone and Frank Nitti in TV shows like The Untouchables and movies like The Godfather.

The fascination has actually lasted right up to the present, judging by the popularity of the recently-concluded Sopranos series.

But there is nothing endearing about gang crime.

Those who feel gang crime is only dangerous for rival gang members and not the general public need only consider recent collateral damage and casualties from incidents such as the infamous “Surrey-Six” killings that took a pair of completely innocent lives in a brazen bullet-fest.

This is thankfully not the sort of incident likely to be dealt with by our local RCMP detachment. But there’s no guarantee that will always be the case.

For now, we have relative isolation from the threat of gang violence.

“We don’t have a noticeable gang influence in Castlegar,” stated RCMP Sergeant Laurel

Mathew on August 28. “We’re not dealing with gang issues from the policing perspective on a daliy, or even monthly basis. It’s pretty much a non-issue...knock on wood.”

Special branches of law enforcement are created to deal with the gang problem in B.C.; one of those organizations has prepared a hard-hitting report on the gang phenomenon. An online presentation by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) is set to appear on Black Press websites across the province.

From fighting crime to fundraising and training for a marathon of a bike ride it’s all in a day’s work for local RCMP Cst. Rob Gardner.

For the third year in a row, Gardner has joined the 2014 Thomas Alan Budd Foundation Cops for Kids Ride Team, and will leave Kelowna on Friday September 5 on a 10 day, 1,000 km cycling journey across southastern British Columbia.

The annual Cops for Kids Ride raises funds and awareness for children in medical, physical and traumatic crisis in our region, funding medical equipment, therapies, travel to Children’s Hospital, learning and mobility aids.

Since 2001, Cops for Kids has raised more than $2.7 million in support of local children.

During the 10 day ride, Cops for Kids riders will cycle into 18 different communities where they will have meet many children who benefit from this event. Meeting these Little Ambassadors will remind each rider of the challenges they face each day, and it will keep them focused to help better the lives of these children. “This is my third year in the ride,� said Gardner. “The physical challenge doesn’t get any easier for us cycling all those miles, but our hard work means that the challenges get a little bit easier for the kids who need it most.

The items we fund aren’t covered by extended health care benefits or government programs, so these kids need us to help them where we can.�

Cops for Kids provides assistance directly to children who need it most from our region.

Due to the overwhelming number of grant requests, they are unable to meet the demands and have established a wait list of children needing essential medical equipment, specialized therapies, and medical travel.

Cops for Kids has the unique opportunity to offer donors and sponsors the most efficient and effective way to make an immediate difference in the life of a child.

They’re anticipating a funding shortfall this year, so donations are appreciated more than ever.

KAAP comedy night promises laughs You should get a laugh out of this canine event aimed at helping animals througout the community.

The Kootenay Animal Assistance Program (KAAP) is hosting its second “Raise the Woof � comedy night Friday September 12 at 8 p.m.

Three comedians will be coming to town to provide some great entertainment, and there will also be door prizes, raffles, and lots of great items at the silent auction.

The event is being held at the Element.

Here is a short story about Bonnie. I got her when she was 4 weeks old.

She almost died when she was poisoned around 6 months of age. After a three-day battle in a pet hospital, she recovered and grew healthy and happy with my family. At the age of four she had a litter of 12 puppies and I almost lost her again. She was a wonderful mom. Taking care of the pups was her priority and as a result she became very weak after two weeks and I was the one that saved her, spending hours and hours with her and feeding her by bottle. She survived. We kept two of her puppies, Toby and Tasha and they have been together since then.

Toby and Tasha, as well as my grandkids, are wondering where Bonnie is.

I know that you are aware that I been looking for her. So I beg you please show mercy and let Bonnie be with her family.

One of the smaller squadrons in B.C., 581 Squadron sent six cadets to Albert Head this summer of which Jordan was the only award recipient.

From July 7 to August 15, 910 cadets completed courses at Albert Head, while 79 senior cadets and 68 adults provide supervision and instruction. Air Cadets selected for the courses and staff come from the 58 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadrons located throughout B.C. There are 3,600 air cadets in B.C. Castlegar Sunrise 2000 Rotary Club is pleased to welcome its newest Rotary Youth Exchange Student, 17 year old Yunus Ozbas, from Istanbul, Turkey. Yunus will attend Stanley Humphries Secondary School, and will live with families in the Castlegar area during the exchange year. Air cadet Jordan Gardner from 581 “Castlegar” Squadron has been singled out for kudos, receiving a “Most Improved Cadet” award on August 15 in Metchosin, a rural community just west of Victoria.

The 14-year-old now has the Basic Survival Course at Albert Head Cadet Summer Training Centre (CSTC) to his credit.

Over a three weeks period, the cadets, the majority between 13 and 15 — gained important skills — such as how to react when an emergency situation arises.

Much more than camping tips, the Basic Survival Course provided hands-on exposure to primitive outdoor living skills, how to aid in a rescue as well as how to be rescued. Jordan and his peers became familiar with problem-solving under adverse conditions, including hunger and isolation. The cadets learned how to push their personal boundaries, a transferable life skill that can be applied to any situation regardless of the life path they choose after they leave the Cadet Program.

Jordan and 267 other cadets graduated on August 15 during the provincial air cadet summer camp’s final graduation ceremony. Graduating cadets completed courses in areas such as music, instruction, drill, aviation technology and aerospace, sports and fitness, and survival.

Nelson FD, which finished first overall in the games, also received a 60th anniversary award from the MDA for its “tireless advocacy,” in the cause of raising money for research and enhancing the lives of those afflicted with the range of diseases involved.

Robson, in part because of their building and hosting of the games, was named the, “Up and Coming” firehall this year.

It was often wet and wild at Pass Creek on the weekend, but a good time was had by all and a lot of money was raised for the Muscular Distrophy Association.

The Robson Volunteer Firefighters Association, prompted by a vision from member Justin LePage himself inspired by a childhood friendship - “re-imagined and re-established,” the Firefighter Games after more than a decade of its absence.

In all 14 teams, from 12 Regional District of Central Kootenay firehouses competed.

“We refreshed the event, made it more about fun than competition, and invited the public, free of charge, to come and be entertained,” LePage said.

1. Place the roast in a roasting pan with the fatty side up. In a small bowl, mix together the garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme. Spread the mixture over the fatty layer of the roast, and let the roast sit out until it is at room temperature, no longer than 1 hour.

2. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C).

3. Bake the roast for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the temperature to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C), and continue roasting for an additional 60 to 75 minutes. The internal temperature of the roast should be at 135 degrees F (57 degrees C) for medium rare.

4. Allow the roast to rest for 10 or 15 minutes before carving so the meat can retain its juices.

5. Serve with roasted potatoes and a green salad.

Jacquie Hamilton, Castlegar Mother Natures (#4) Hand-woven Textiles (“Happy Towels – The Dark Side”) Bio & Artist Statement: I have been weaving since the early 1970s, when hand-woven textiles were mostly “lumpy and bumpy.” Over the decades, handcrafted woven items have become finer and cont ro l l e d — h o u s e hold linens, blankets and rugs, as well as luxury accessories from exotic threads.

When the Selkirk Weavers’ and Spinners’ Guild chose a colour wheel of tea towels as their theme for a conference display, I began an extended exercise in colour. Each unique hand-woven towel features narrow stripes that shift in colour along the length of the fabric. Controlling those shifts and finding other colours that enhance this design seems to be a never-ending quest—and one that never fails to make the weaver happy.

While the result is eye-pleasing, the all-cotton towels are certainly functional and will stand up to repeated use. This year, I have been working “On the Dark Side” of my Happy Towels, which can be found on display at Mother Natures in downtown Castlegar.

I have been a professional painter and instructor since 2003 and have continually developed my skill and knowledge through workshops conducted by fellow Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) members, such as Mike Svob, Liz Wiltzen, and Alan Wiley.

Local athletes are off to the Senior Games in Langley, starting next Tuesday.

the Games.

Mary Bermel has been involved in preparing the Cribbage crew for the trip. She

will not be competing this time around, but says she’s enjoyed herself immensely in previous years at the

nating the curling is fairly straightforward as long as the time frames are allowed for.

“It just takes a bit of organization,” said Phipps, “because the curling ice goes out in March, so you have to identify teams by then in case there’s playdowns here.”

Alex Bojey is the only Langley-bound golfer from Castlegar.

He’s a keen compet-

itor who has tasted success over the years, in more sports than one.

“I used to like ball (softball) more than golf, but I guess I’m too old now for ball,” he said.

On the diamond he had eight trips to the seniors’ games.

“I have two golds and two silvers, he said.

KEY PURPOSE:

• To perform Service Delivery and Assurance functions related to switching, transport, broadcast and data / IP network elements.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: Technical

• Work is performed within defined time requirements to meet company quality standards, to ensure network reliability and to meet customer needs • Preventative maintenance routines and administration responsibilities are completed accurately and timely

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have a Valid Class 5 Driver’s License • Must be willing and able to work aloft • Must be willing to work in any weather conditions • Normal colour vision to work with colourcoded wiring.

• Must be willing and able to work various shifts as assigned (such as evenings, weekends and statutory holidays), based on business needs.

• Ability to manage a physically demanding workload.

• Must follow safe work practices and abide by all safety rules and regulations.

“Bear” left his family and friends tragically and suddenly on August 16, 2014. Kevin Barry was born to parents Verna and Fred of Robson on October 8, 1963. Barry did all his growing up in Robson attending elementary school there before moving to K. J. S. S. and finally to high school in Castlegar.

In his youth Barry wasn’t much into organized sports. He did, however, love the great outdoors and spent many happy hours fishing, hunting and trapping with his dad and grandfather Charlie.

After graduation Barry worked for the C.P.R. locally and then in the East Kootenay’s. After a major lay off there he returned to his favourite mountains and streams around Castlegar. He got reacquainted with old friends and made several new ones. A special friend was Stuart Sutherland. Barry worked for Stuart who had creek cleanup contracts with BC Hydro and they remained close friend until the end.

Barry found other work with local contractors mostly in construction and home renovation. To locals he became known ads “Buzz”.

Recently he suffered two accidents which severely impeded his ability to work. But he began a recovery with help from Dr. Vasil and the folks at Saber Physiotherapy. All of this came to an end with his sudden passing.

Left to mourn his loss are his grandmother Elena Salekin of Rota Villa, his parents and sisters Arleen Langille of Calgary and Renita Lennon of Castlegar.

He is also survived by three uncles, 2 aunts and several cousins, nephews and nieces.

The family would like to than those who provided us with thoughtful, professional care during our time of troubles - Cst. K. Plotnikoff, Sheree Schiavon and Andy Cave of B.C. Corners Service and Gwen Ziprick of Alternatives Funeral and cremation Services.

A celebration of life has already taken place.
