Fall Fair kicks off with midway and more Katya Slepian Alberni VAlley news

It’s taken weeks and weeks of preparation but the 2014 Fall Fair has finally come together. It’s especially hard to believe given that one short week ago, the bustling fairgrounds were dusty and abandoned, with volunteers just beginning to set up the fair.

On the night of Thursday, Aug. 28, just behind the barn, a group of men were loading boards onto a truck.

“These are part of our stage and we put it right behind the logger sports.

Then we build a deck over the pool,” said Fall Fair administrator Anne Sidall.

“Every year they have to do this and that’s a huge job, they all go in a certain

way and numbered.”

And it’s not only the outdoors that are bustling.

Inside the Kin Hut, Steve Kalugin, deputy governor of the Kin Canada Upper Island Zone and Barb Kalugin, president of the Port Alberni Kinette Club, are hard at work preparing to feed the hungry hordes that will descend on the fairgrounds come opening day. Well, that and trying

to get their granddaughter, Mackenzie, to wear her customized apron.

“Mackenzie, if you’re gonna help me, you have to be wearing this. See, I’ve got mine on.”

The Kinette Club has run the food booth at the fair since the club’s inception close to 50 years ago.

“They’re a small group but they do a lot of work and this is their major

fundraiser for the year,” said Steve. “They support a lot of groups as well” and those groups will get donations in return for volunteering their time at the fall fair.

Any extra money that the Kinettes raise will go towards bursaries, helping adults with disabilities, the SPCA, Salvation Army and Cystic Fibrosis Canada, for which Kin

Canada, the local club’s parent organization, has raised almost $40 million.

“All those funds are raised out of here so they’re busy, they’ll have four windows going,” he said. “It gets crazy. People are buying up, it’s all your regular burgers, hotdogs, fried onions of course, so with those smells they’re dragging everybody in.”

“Katie, elbows! What are you doing? I’m going to put some Velcro on there!” admonishes Carole Walton, the Equine Canada Certified coach preparing the horse division of Port Alberni’s 4-H club for the 2014 Fall Fair.

She’s giving direction to five girls who are training for the 4-H Horse Show taking place during the Alberni District Fall Fair, taking place this weekend at the fairgrounds behind Glenwood Centre.

The girls, all Port Alberni residents, range between nine and 12 years old and their horses range from ponies for the younger ones to horses for the older ones. But more than the riders, it’s the horses that are making things difficult by getting a little snappy.

“That pony keeps attacking that grey horse,” Walton says.

“We have problems.”

Walton has been training riders for close to 50 years now and one of the girls taking part in the Fall Fair Horse Show is riding Walton’s horse, Ruby. The 29-year-old mare has had a long

run with Walton, having given her two generations of show horses.

Dolly, one of Ruby’s brood, is 21 years old now, while her foals are Kira and Peek, both American Quarter Horse Association Champions. Kira once finished ninth in the world in halter.

“These horses are lovely to ride, they’re so well trained,” Walton says.

The stable where the horses are housed used to include a clubhouse. “Back in the 70s, we had huge quarterhorse shows here so we needed a clubhouse, a place for people to congregate.

We had a bar upstairs; it’s now a hayloft,” Walton says. “We had a concession across the front, we danced here, we had a riding club and parties here.”

She used to breed horses for sale but in recent years she’s stopped, worried as to what might happen without proper veterinary care.

“We have no vet in this town, no large animal vet any closer than Courtenay or Nanaimo, both over an hour away.”

So in lieu of breeding horses, she’s helping to train them and their riders.

“We have been doing lessons every couple of weeks to start and then it’s been every week after that, trying to teach [riders] how to do competitions as well as just plain ride the horses,” Walton says.

With most of the girls never

having been on a horse until April of this year, the preparation is a lot of work, both in and out of the saddle. But amidst the hard work, there’s also a little time for fun.

“I try to give them some work on the ground, leading, some

work in the saddle, riding and some fun, which are games on horseback and trail riding.”

It’s crucial for the girls to learn it all well, because when the fall fair comes they’ll have to do it all themselves as per 4-H rules, with no parental help.

“They had to learn how to saddle and bridle and tie up their horses properly, put the halter on. They had to learn to do everything for themselves and that’s what the preparation has been about.”

“We raise lots of money here and it all goes back to the community,” said Barb. “We get it all done in one weekend; the whole budget for our club is basically made during this weekend. It’s a lot of flipping burgers, it’s a lot of grease.”

But there’s a lot of work to be done before people can come down and get their burgers which means that everyone is hard at work, even Mackenzie, who’s helping Barb get some rocks ready to serve as weights so nothing blows away during the fair.

“Put one more up there: perfect! Now come put one over there, no no, leave that one there!”

There’s also painting to be done before the fair starts.

“As we’re headed into the 30th anniversary we had $20,000 in the fund,” he said.

Little patients needing dental surgery will be able to seek treatment closer to home, thanks to a generous donation from the Port Alberni Toy Run. Toy Run members on Tuesday gave $20,000 to the West Coast General Hospital Foundation, which will bolster the pediatric dentistry program in Port Alberni.

“This vital community support will benefit children in the area for years to come,” dentist Dr. Jim Chan said.

“In the field of pediatric dentistry, our patients experience several challenges. One such challenge is access to care,” said Chan, who is based at Holly Tree Dental in Nanaimo.

“For some families, travelling out of town to see a specialist is a significant barrier.

Long surgical wait times can also affect these patients’ dental experiences.

“This gift helps provide a local option which will reduce wait times for children who cannot be treated in an office setting.”

“I feel like it’s been an endless balance for all of the teachers. I have seen first hand, volunteering in the classrooms, what they go through. Class sizes are large and you couldn’t pay me enough money to sit in one of those classrooms.

With the dispute between the province and the teachers stretching into the new school year, parents are finding themselves scrambling to make other arrangements.

Some, like Richelle McKenzie who has

a 10-year-old and an eight-year-old enrolled in public schools, are making do with friends and family.

“I’m lucky, I’m working with other families, working together to try and make it work,” she said.

Some cities in the province have begun adding programs in

an attempt to provide parents with alternate child support arrangements but according to director of Parks, Recreation and Heritage Scott Kenny, Port Alberni just doesn’t have the staff available.

“We don’t really have the staff to do that and we’ll see just how long it stretches,”

Kenny said.

“We don’t have staff on hand to run the programs, so we’d have to organize it through contract staff.”

While many daycares are filling up, parents without childcare have a few options. The Salvation Army is running a daycamp for children

from kindergarten to Grade 5. The camp will run from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $20 a day per child and activities will include games, stories and arts and crafts.

Blame lies on both sides Bleak summer for coastal ferry remake Given that the dispute between the B.C. Teachers Federation and the employer, which for all intents and purposes is the provincial government, has dragged on for months, it seems quite likely there will be no classes on Tuesday, and into the foreseeable future.

This is completely unacceptable. There is no shortage of blame to go around, but it is the two primary parties in the dispute who have brought public school students and their parents to this sad state of affairs.

At one time, the BC Liberal government banned strikes by teachers, saying that using students as pawns in a labour dispute was unacceptable. That was a move that met with considerable public support.

However, teachers disregarded the ban and went on strike in 2005, and actually gained considerable public sympathy, partly due to the fact that the BC Liberals had torn up part of their existing contract, and partly due to the fact that their emphasis was on class size and composition.

That’s the emphasis again, and this time the strike is perfectly legal. However, students have already suffered considerable damage, due to most of June being a writeoff from an education perspective. Now it appears that the first part of September, and maybe the whole month, won’t be any different. A $40 a day payment to parents of younger students is no recompense.

The public has absolutely no control over the BCTF, and any discipline to be handed out there must be done by BCTF members, if enough of them disagree with the union executive’s actions in continuing this strike.

The fact is, neither side is taking students’ education all that seriously.

They are treating this as a political fight — something both the BCTF and BC Liberals excel at.

The education system exists so students can have a brighter future as adults. It’s high time they were back in class.

ICTORIA – There was an uproar in the B.C. legislature this spring when Transportation Minister Todd Stone went ahead with $19 million in cuts to low-usage coastal ferry routes.

The plan had been laid out in detail before last year’s election.

It targeted sailings where ridership was in the low teens or even single digits. On some sailings the Transport Canada-mandated crew outnumbered the passengers.

Despite the cries of doom, most of the sailing reductions have been managed – with one glaring exception. The Discovery Coast Circle Tour route saw its ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola replaced, using the smallest vessel in the BC Ferries fleet, the opendecked Nimpkish.

This move wasn’t a direct response to low usage, a chronic issue with some of the minor route sailings along the coast.

It was to avoid ordering a replacement for the Queen of Chilliwack, which sailed directly between Port Hardy and Bella Coola.

This summer the first leg was consolidated with the Northern Expedition, the vessel that replaced the doomed Queen of the North on the Inside Passage run up to Prince Rupert. At Bella Bella, after a layover of a couple of hours, the Nimpkish took over with space for

16 standard vehicles on its deck and a midnight arrival time in Bella Coola.

The direct route had been mainly used by European tourists, who sailed from the Lower Mainland to Victoria, drove the length of the Island, ferried to Bella Coola and drove through the rugged Chilcotin to Williams Lake and back down south to complete the circle tour.

The new route incorporated stops in remote outposts Ocean Falls and Shearwater, making it even longer.

Warnings came early.

“That’s where 90 per cent of the [BC Ferries] money is being lost, on the milk runs, and that’s the part they are keeping,” Petrus Rykes, a tourism operator at Anahim Lake for 40 years, said in March. “The part they’ve cancelled was at 70 per cent capacity, the second highest of all the fleet routes.”

Reports of a bad slump have come to pass. The changes meant bookings couldn’t be made until April, too late for most international travelers.

A survey by Bella Coola Valley Tourism in midsummer found most operators losing business, from 10 to 90 per cent.

A bus tour of Canadian seniors heading west from Williams Lake was terminated after 14 years.

One tourism operator on Highway 20 is considering closing down.

Stone and his family took the new route themselves in early August, with the minister offering sunny reports on his blog.

The true issue is the same as it’s been for 40 years since I graduated: class size, composition and enough resources for special-needs students.

I wish these pencil-pushing bureaucrats would get over this childish “theirs is bigger than mine!” negotiating mentality and just pay teachers what their work (the shaping of our children) is worth.

In the meantime, while our dedicated teachers stand their ground for our youth, let’s all unite and Adopt a Teacher. I’m sure we’ve all got a little extra, we could at least keep ‘em all fed.

At the very least, hug a teacher today.

Provincial politicians tend to be profligate in

spending, including on grandiose projects – Ontario being a current example of huge projects and mismanaged deals that will burden Ontario taxpayers for decades. (And the rest of us, because of the federal government’s crazy system of transfer payments that rescue the foolish.)

Governments must cut activities. The B.C. government has not addressed barriers to employment created by its quotas in agriculture and transportation, for example.

It continues to spend on handouts to moochers, including companies that won’t invest in their own capability by training employees. And on public relations, as if most voters believe much of it.

Voters in B.C. have an opportunity to reduce operational spending by insisting on cutting activities such as interference with honest people’s attempt to build and earn, endless

McKenzie also doubts the government’s intentions with regard to the $40 per day

allowance.

“I think that it was a way for the government to say that they’re not willing to mediate and that they’re just going to give away the teachers’ paycheques and they’re not willing to back down,” she said. “That scares me that they’re willing to break the law and just do whatever they feel like and ignore supreme court cases.”

School District 70 (Alberni) Superintendent Greg Smyth did not return phone calls for comment but in an e-mailed statement last week he said that he hoped that “the labour impasse is quickly resolved” and students would be back in schools as soon as possible.

Smyth said parents are encouraged to not send their children to schools and find alternate arrangements.

In Men’s Club action on Sunday the low gross of the day was 77, courtesy of Jim proteau. In the high handicap division, the low net went to Fred Fredrickson shooting a 68. Darrell Van os won the high handicap division, shooting a 64. the closest to the pin winners were Art Fowler on No. 2, Jacques Geovetti on No. 4, Keith Gauthier on No. 13 and Darrell Van os on No. 17. there was no winner in the low handicap division in the skins competition. In

the high handicap division, phil Anker won two with a net 2 on No. 6 and a net 2 on No. 10. Art Fowler won a skin on No. 9 with a net 3 and Wolf Suhr took home the money winning a skin on No. 14 with a net 3.

In the money pot Darrel Van os had the only birdies on Nos. 2 and 17, worth $11 each.

Swimmers win medals Inbrief at B.C. championships ’Dawg Pound

Bulldogs start new season

three members of the tsunami Swim team qualified for provincials this summer.

Corynn Ayres, 10, and Caiden Edwards, 12 both attended the BC AA provincial Championship. this meet brought almost 400 top level swimmers from all over BC to compete at the Commonwealth pool in Victoria.

Coral ridinger, 10, attended the BC Summer Association provincials in Kamloops.

All three swimmers did exceptionally well, earning lots of medals and ribbons, according to their coaches.

Ayres also achieved two BC AAA times, the highest level possible provincially, with outstanding swims in the 800metre and the 200m freestyle events. the tsunami Swim Club is port Alberni’s only swim team offering lots of program from Learn-to-Swim to Competitive programs. All youth ages five to 18 years are welcome to join with no tryouts necessary.

Ray Ursel wins Salmon Fest Katya Slepian Alberni VAlley news

Port Alberni native Ray Ursel took home the top prize at the 2014 Salmon Fest this past weekend with a 37.7lb chinook.

“He fought good, made a good run right at the beginning, had a good netting job on my partner there and fought him for about 20 minutes,” Ursel said.

The 37.7-pounder was the third fish that he caught during the festival but it proved to be the best, standing its ground for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

He caught the fish out at Whittlestone, just south of Bamfield with a Rhys Davis Teaser Head lure using anchovies for bait. At 37.7 lbs, his catch was over 20 lbs better than 2013 winner Sterling

an increased prize of $15,000 to show for it. Ursel will split it three ways between

himself and his fishing partners Brent Rose and Bob McVie. While the 37.7 lb winner meant that Port Alberni Salmon Festival Society president Dan Washington didn’t get the 43-pounder he was hoping for to celebrate the 43rd annual event, he was still pleased with the turnout; 2014 had roughly 2,000 entries, about twice what it was in 2013 and an average fish weight of 11.5 lbs, almost double that of 2013 when the average was 6.87 lbs. The total number of fish was lower this year however, with 1346 compared to 2013’s 1364.

Ursel was Saturday’s first place winner, followed by Dennis Granneman with 27 lbs in second and 2009 derby winner Cory

Jones at 26.9 lbs in third.

Sunday’s winners were Leon Joseph Kossaber in first place at 25.9 lbs, Henry Clement in second also at 25.9lbs due to weighing in second and Wayne Salikin in third place. Monday’s winners were Bill Goorts in first place at 34 lbs, Dale Dame at 24.3 lbs and Sue Hale in third at 22.9 lbs. The Gary Rooke Memorial Award for the largest hatchery salmon went to Sally Watson, who brought in her 22.8-pounder on Sunday. Watson told festival goers that this was her first derby and “it was freaking awesome” and that she’d be back in 2015.

The Egon Matheson Memorial Award for volunteer of the weekend went to Hugh Love.

Health tip: Take the salt shaker off the table and order food without the salt whenever possible. Your blood pressure will thank you.

How salty are you? Pressure’s rising over sodium consume about double the amount of salt than what is needed. Too much sodium (salt) can raise blood pressure, a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease and kidney disease. Recent research reveals that in addition to cardiac disease, high blood pressure can speed up the body’s loss of calcium, leading to osteoporosis (thinning of bones).

High blood pressure (or hypertension) is also a risk factor for developing diabetes, stomach cancer and increasing severity of asthma.

hat do soup, pizza, cold cuts, breads, burgers, and cheese have in common?

These are examples of the ‘Salty Six’ and contribute the majority of sodium in the North American diet.

Many of the items listed are high in salt content and are eaten in small amounts (cold cuts), whereas, others (bread) are lower in sodium but often eaten in higher amounts, over the day.

without a label, such as unprocessed vegetables and fruits are naturally low in sodium.

Frozen dinners, soup, meat, sauces and canned vegetables contain a lot of extra salt.

Look for labels that say, “no salt added” or “low sodium”.

Health claims, such as “reduced sodium” and “less salt” may still have a high content of sodium. Before purchasing, check the Nutrition Facts label to see the amount of sodium and daily value that the item provides.

Become a savvy shopper by reading labels.

Some tips when checking sodium levels on a food label are to focus on: 1) Serving size: how much food the Nutrition Facts table refers to 2) Number of milligrams (mg) of sodium listed in the table 3) Number of servings consumed times the number of mg sodium listed = sodium consumed 4) For adults, adequate intake is 1500 mg of sodium (around 500 mg per meal) and upper limit is 2300mg (about one teaspoon/day) 5) Using colours like a traffic signal. On any single food product, (per serving): 400mg+ is too much (red/ stop), 200-400mg (amber/proceed with caution), 0-200mg (green/go)

Some methods to reduce sodium intake include, avoiding frozen dinners and ‘instant’ foods, including instant soups, oatmeal, pancakes and waffles.

Also, limit pickles, relishes, salsa, dips, olives, barbecue, soy, hoisin, oyster sauces, and prepared salad dressings. Also, salted snack foods including crackers, chips, popcorn, nuts and pretzels can be loaded with sodium.

Cured meats that have been processed or smoked can have very high levels of salt, including salami, sausages, hot dogs, ham, bacon, pepperoni

and smoked fish.

Substitute other seasonings, such as herbs and spices instead of salt to flavour foods.

Take the salt shaker off the table and order food without the salt, whenever possible.

Gourmet salts are not any healthier than regular table salt, despite marketing claims. Sea salt, Himalayan, Kosher, Rock or table salt all have exactly the same effect on blood pressure and health.

passed away peacefully at Ty Watson House on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at the age of 93 years.

Theresa is predeceased by husband Harold (1993) and son Terry (2008).

She is survived by son Malcolm; daughter Joanne (Laurie); daughter-in-law Bobbie; grandchildren, Dione, Dawn, Tammy, Nicola, Angela, James; 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Theresa moved to Port Alberni in 1947. A typesetter by trade, she was hired at a newspaper when she was 15, then hired by Woodward’s initially as a typesetter. Quickly she became the “Woodward’s Bra Lady� and worked there for over 30 years.

Dick travelled to the European country in July to create the 14-foot-wide piece in Italian mountain cedar. “The intent of the art piece is to remind everyone to slow down, to stop and realize how we treat nature today,” Dick said.

The world of sci-fi fiction is ever expanding, and Beta by Rachel Cohn is the latest addition. Joining an increasing number of teen dystopian sci-fi books, Beta is set in a future world where the “Water Wars” have redrawn the maps.

People live in specially designed cities, but the richest of the rich live in Demesne, a paradise where pleasure is a lifestyle. Everything is bioengineered to make the residents of Demesne feel good. Even the staff is chosen, made to suit the needs of the island. Enter Elysia. As one of the island’s many soulless clone workers, her only purpose is to serve. She was made without a soul so that she may not enjoy the luxuries of the island. But Elysia is different. She feels things that she shouldn’t. As time wears on, she sees there is more to the pampered idyllic life than meets the eye. When conspiracies started to pile up, I found myself racing through the pages to find out how it would end. The world of Beta is masterfully created, and I found it completely believable. However, Beta is intended for readers 14+. Mature content and some scenes in the book are not suitable for younger readers. When stirrings of a clone rebellion reach Elysia, she must decide how much she is willing to risk to fight for those she loves. For if Elysia is found out, it’s game over.

For Walton, the independence that 4-H breeds is one of the best things to come out of the program.

Riding horses is fun, but if the girls can apply the independence to their lives outside of the show ring then she’s done her job.

“I’ve been at this for a long, long time, I’ve had grandchildren come back to ride, but the riders, as they look back on their young life when they used to come here have said that those were the best years ever.

“They love it.”

The girls get to learn how to handle a responsibility and in return get a tremendous feeling of accomplishment, something that Walton believes that young girls need.

“Girls need to feel that they have control over something because girls don’t have a lot of control,” she says.

And the horses are really testing the girls’ control here.

“Rambler... Rambler!

Rambler!” scolds Paige Franks, 9, whose pony has decided that he prefers banging his feed bucket into the stable wall, spilling the feed, rather than eating from it. “That’s

Abbie McFarlane, 11, has a more optimistic viewpoint.
