An incident involving two dirt bikes early Saturday morning has resulted in the death of a 26-year-old Sylvan Lake man, and left another 27-year-old Sylvan Lake man critically injured.

RCMP attended the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision in a gravel lane behind Lodge Place just after 6 a.m. Saturday, where they located the two men seriously injured, along with two damaged dirt bikes.

Two STARS Air Ambulance helicopters were dispatched, and landed in the football field at École Fox Run School.

Spencer raises thousands in support of Cancer Foundation STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

television. In her first year, she feared not being able to meet the minimum amount required. Through hard work and determination, however, she realized it was possible after all, and more than doubled that amount.

Since then, the event — and cycling — have become two of her greatest passions.

“Once this ride came up, (I decided) I’m going to dig my bike out,” she said. “It’s just kind of snowballed from there. It’s now an addiction.”

Spencer is currently taking a break from training until January, when she’ll begin cycling indoors on a stationary unit. She’ll eventually work her way back outside, to prepare for next year’s Ride to Conquer Cancer — which she’s already signed up for.

“We so often hear the negatives, but there are so many amazing, good stories out there,” she said. “When I hear the things that are happening and the success stories, I just think we are headed in the right direction.

If I didn’t feel we weren’t making a true difference, I wouldn’t be doing it.”

A two-day, 230-km bike ride through the foothills left Sylvan Lake’s Coreen Spencer physically exhausted — but she knows the pain she endured along the way is nothing compared to those living with cancer.

Earlier this summer — and for the fourth time — she took part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, which began at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary on Aug. 9. and wrapped up the next day following a “gruelling” journey through the foothills.

In the process, she raised over $5,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

“For me, I just think of the people I know that have struggled with cancer,” she said. “We’re sweating, and we’re gruelling, and we’re exhausted, but it’s nothing compared to what they go through, so really, I can’t complain.”

In her four years of participation, Spencer has raised nearly $25,000 for the cause.

Her experience has allowed to her to know ahead of time how much training and planning is required to complete the ride, and she now prepares accordingly.

At the risk of sounding somewhat like the immature kid that I really am, the one I keep under wraps and covered up with all this wrinkly mature skin, I have decided to write about my summer, as well.

For me, I think the best thing, the truly great thing about summer, was the colour that gets splashed haphazardly on the canvas of each and every day.

And the wonderful, warm, cozy and consistent heat.

Nice! I so don’t want it to go away.

Anyway, even at my age, when summer camps and empty moments with nothing to do are only illusions of the past, summer, just like always, is kind of like magic.

Perhaps it is because summer seems to bring with it those quick, shining moments gone as quickly as bubbles blown into the air by a child with a tiny wand and a bottle full of liquid detergent.

For me, waterskiing held such a bubble-like moment.

“She’s up,” the occupants of the boat yelled, as I shakily rose out of the water, my feet firmly encased in two skis, a death grip on the rope.

My water-ski was short and sweet and I was happy to sit in the boat later wrapped in a towel almost as wet as me and watch my daughter gracefully maneuver the wake and the boat waves.

But I did it; even though my son said I was almost a hundred years old and it was no wonder it took me so long to put the skis on.

This summer, I did something I have never done before.

I helped tag a turkey vulture.

My goodness, who’d have ever believed it. A few short months ago, I had no idea what a turkey vulture even was.

The last long weekend of summer proved to be rather bleak, cold and wet, as the Labour Day holiday provided a fizzle of an ending for summer recreation. On the whole the summer just past did not come up with good holiday weather. The first two weeks of July were lovely and two fine weekends brought out some of the largest crowds ever seen at Sylvan Lake.

and cool weather prevailed for most of the rest of July and August. ♦ ♦ ♦ Mrs. Norma McNamara has had word from the Dept. of Extension, University of Alberta, that the Sylvan Lake Art Class will be discontinued this winter. Classes throughout the province are being consolidated and held only in larger centres. ♦ ♦ ♦ Sylvan Lake Library will be open Tuesday evenings during September, as well as Friday afternoons. Mrs. McClean, librarian, announces that she will continue to keep the library open on some evenings during the week for the winter. ♦ ♦ ♦ 13.6 inches of rain has been recorded since the beginning of May.

- Joel Sinkwich was one of the many people on Saturday who entered the draw for tickets to the Hockeyville pre-season NHL game in Sylvan Lake later this month. There are still two more chances to enter draws for tickets.

Ballots can be completed at the Multiplex on Saturday (Sept. 6) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or on Sunday (Sept. 7) from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Resident alerted by neighbour to attempted theft August 23 2:05 a.m. – RCMP were contacted after a resident reported a group of youths trying to steal items out of his backyard. The complainant was alerted by his neighbour and he attempted to follow the youths in order to obtain a description. Two youths were apprehended by RCMP a short time later. The incident remains under investigation.

9:40 a.m. – A domestic dispute resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old Sylvan Lake male. A 911 call was received by dispatch of a female requiring assistance. RCMP arrived at the residence on 50th Avenue and questioned a 23-year-old female who was suffering from non-life threatening injuries. The female was transported by EMS to hospital for treatment. A 29-yearold male is charged with assault and forcible confinement and was remanded in custody due to a breach of existing parole conditions.

10:12 a.m. – Another domestic situation was reported to RCMP at a residence on Bowman Circle. A 23-year-old female reported that she was having a verbal altercation with her 21-yearold ex-boyfriend and that items were being thrown about inside the house. Police attended and the situation was resolved.

There was some minor damage observed inside the residence, however charges were not laid as there was no evidence of physical assault.

August 24 7:49 a.m. – Police attended the Ridgewood Community Hall on Range Road 10 in Red Deer County after reports of a break in. The complainant had responded to a call of a commercial alarm at that location and discovered that entry was made to the facility. A dryer and a point of sale card machine were stolen.

August 26 11:15 a.m. – A male is facing

impaired driving charges in relation to a complaint of an erratic driver on Range Road 30 in Red Deer County. A witness reported a vehicle being driven erratically, almost hitting the ditch a couple of times and driving on the wrong side of the road nearly causing a head on collision. RCMP attended and found the suspect vehicle stopped in the middle of the road. The driver was questioned and a roadside screening device was utilized. A 63-year-old Red Deer County male is subsequently charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over .08.

August 28 7:26 p.m. – RCMP were contacted after a witness reported seeing an individual spray painting graffiti on fences and sheds in the vicinity of 50A Avenue in Sylvan Lake. One shed was damaged with a fluorescent paint as well as an abandoned commercial building.

The suspect had fled the area prior to police arrival.

Drivers reminded to pay attention as the school year begins SUBMITTED

The province is reminding Alberta drivers to take extra care and attention as school has begun and children are once again active in school zones, playgrounds and neighbourhoods.

Between 2008 and 2012, approximately

240 children under 15 were killed or injured while riding their bicycle or simply crossing the street on average each year.

“The death of any child is tragic, especially when it is preventable. Everybody has a role to play in keeping our children safe,” said Wayne Drysdale, Alberta Minister of Transportation

Drivers play a large role in back to school safety. Be alert and use extra caution in school zones, near school buses and near playgrounds. Likewise, students need to be aware of traffic safety rules as pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders and school bus passengers.

FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM The Façade Improvement Program is designed to encourage retail and commercial building owners to invest in facade renovations and storefront upgrades by providing grants to cover a portion of renovation costs. Grants will be awarded to eligible applicants to cover up to 50% of the façade renovation costs, up to a maximum dollar value. The 2014 grant program will provide an incentive for 50th Street/Centennial Street buildings to complete façade upgrades that contribute to the Waterfront Area, by creating a more interesting and appealing street environment that attracts people and new businesses.

The program is intended to: • Enhance the appearance and charm of commercial areas while making streets a more attractive, safe, and interesting place to walk.

• Help building owners attract and retain tenants.

Job site safety was the primary focus of a barbecue lunch hosted by Canadian Home Builders’ Association - Central Alberta (CHBA-CA) last week.

Organizers estimated between 50 and 70 residential trade workers attended the free lunch event, which saw government and industry representatives host a variety of interactive safety demonstrations in Ryders Ridge.

“Even if we get one person to listen to us, we’ve done what we’re supposed to do, but we had the opportunity to talk to at least 50 or 70 of them,” said Denie Olmstead, CHBA-CA executive officer.

A similar event held in Red Deer in June attracted between 130 and 150 people, putting into perspective the success of the Sylvan Lake event, he added.

“In comparison, the developments in Red Deer are much larger than the developments in Sylvan, so 50 to 70 was a great success,” he said.

While fun and interactive, the event — billed as a chance to “inform and educate residential construction site workers regarding virtually every aspect of job site safety” — very much fulfilled its purpose, Olmstead felt.

Participants were given passports that were stamped after each interaction they had with one of the exhibitors on hand. Four stamps made them eligible for a number of door prizes.

Sylvan Lake firefighters and ATCO Gas representatives were among the guests providing demonstrations, which related to Occupational Health and Safety, fire prevention, first aid and CPR, fire extinguisher training, fall protection and the Call Before You Dig program.

Event partners and sponsors were also on hand to offer information and provide print correspondence.

While organizers hadn’t yet had a chance to gauge feedback from the event, it was, all in all, an effective way of delivering important messages, according to Olmstead.

“This was our first year of (hosting the barbecue), and I think it was successful enough that we want to continue on next year and make it an annual event.”

Zebra mussels busted twice at the border SUBMITTED

Alberta inspectors have discovered invasive mussels on two boats this summer, prompting a reminder for boaters to clean, drain and dry their boats.

The contaminated boats, intercepted at Dunmore and Vermilion weigh stations, were headed to Alberta waters from New York and Ontario.

One of the contaminated boat owners admitted he was very thankful for the inspection station, as he wouldn’t want to be responsible for bringing mussels into an Alberta lake.

Of the approximately 2,500 completed inspections since June 9, two boats were found to have zebra mussels attached and 99 boats were deemed “high risk”, which means they were coming from states or provinces that are either infested with mussels or not currently implementing inspection and monitoring programs.

“Alberta is being very proactive in taking steps to stop invasive mussels from entering our lakes,” said Robin Campbell, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. “Our success really depends on boaters taking advantage of inspection sites and always cleaning, draining and drying their boats. With only about half of boaters stopping to have their watercraft inspected this summer, stricter measures may be necessary to protect our waterways.”

Once introduced to a waterbody, zebra and quagga mussels are virtually impossible to eradicate and can cause millions of dollars in damage to water-operated infrastructure and harm aquatic ecosystems. An infestation in Alberta would have an estimated annual cost of $75 million.

If a boat is found to have mussels attached, it will be decontaminated and the owner may be directed to keep the watercraft out of the water for up to 30 days.

Inspections sites will remain open until the end of September and are located at Burmis, Coutts, Dunmore and Vermilion weigh stations, as well as at various provincial parks.

As an addition to the established inspection program, Alberta joined forces with Montana in a pilot project this summer using “sniffer” dogs to detect mussels at inspection sites. The project was the first of its kind in Canada and may become a permanent addition to the inspection program.

Council moving ahead with proposed outdoor rink project STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake town council is moving ahead with a proposal to develop a highquality outdoor ice rink facility capable of hosting hockey games and other ice-related pursuits.

At a special meeting Tuesday night, councillors gave administration the green light to move ahead with the construction of the facility, which would be situated in Leader Field West, but only if a corporate sponsor for the project can be secured.

“It would be a facility that would have rental fees and user fees and everything else just like an indoor facility,” said Town com-

munications officer Joanne Gaudet. “It would be able to host games and things like that. It would be a much higher level than the outdoor rinks that we have for the community.”

The Town hopes the creation of a new rink, along with the amenities that would accompany it, would alleviate pressure from the Multiplex, which has provided the town’s sole ice surface since the collapse of the Sylvan Lake Arena’s roof earlier this year.

“It’s something staff has been working on, in light of the arena collapse, knowing how many users we have and knowing how difficult it is to schedule everything that we’ve otherwise scheduled onto one ice surface,” said Gaudet.

Sponsorship is required to cover the entire cost of the project, according to a report to council. Gaudet said administration would work to secure a project sponsor immediately, with the hopes of constructing the facility as soon as weather permits.

Nearby land and property owners will be “notified appropriately” of the project, should it go ahead, said Gaudet.

The facility would include a rink, penalty boxes, dressing rooms and a score clock.

The cost of the project in its entirety is believed to be around $500,000, which could increase in further years with the potential eventual addition of a roof and lighting.

This fall will see an amazing tribute by Veterans Voices of Canada to our military heroes of Canada.

This year, it will begin in Central Alberta, and we will go on next year to have the same tribute in each province across Canada.

On Oct. 25, Veterans Voices of Canada will begin the placing of the first of 115 Canadian Flags of Remembrance, each representing 1000 Canadian fallen soldiers from 1900 to 2014. These particular flags will begin to be placed along the side of Highway 11, just east of the Highway 20 Sylvan Lake intersection. It should extend a quarter kilometre or so, making a very impressive sight.

Each flag can be sponsored by anyone who wants to give tribute. This can be family, an individual or business, or someone who just wants to give tribute to any veteran of their choice. The service person can be living or deceased.

This firstly will be an amazing tribute to the fallen of Canada’s military services, and secondly will be an all important campaign for Veterans Voices of Canada to help continue what it does best, which is honouring our veterans, old and young, through on-camera documentation of our Canadian military veterans for history and education. For each flag, we are asking for a minimum donation of $200. If successful, this would raise $20,000 for our organization. First come, first served basis.

This tribute to our serving and fallen will begin to build at noon on Saturday, Oct. 25, with the flags sponsored at that point. We will continue to add flags as they are sponsored until we reach 115 flags. Flags will remain in place until Nov. 11, where the sponsor will be present when it is taken down, and their flag and commemorative plaque will be handed over to them as a keepsake. This will be a ceremony with last post played as well.

Frac sand transloading facility hearing set for Monday STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A Subdivision and Development Appeal Board hearing set for Sept. 15 in Eckville will centre around the recent approval of a temporary frac sand transloading facility in that town.

An application from Source Energy Services for the facility to be constructed on Station Grounds south of 50 Ave. was recently approved by the Municipal Planning Commission. But the decision is being appealed by some town residents who live near the site — as well as others who don’t.

Town CAO Jack Ramsden said 15 separate appeals have been submitted, on a number of grounds.

Some residents feel the station’s proposed location relative to nearby

residences and businesses is inappropriate due to the nature of the proposed operation. Increased traffic and noise, and nonconventional working hours are among some of the other concerns expressed.

A Source Energy Services representative said every effort would be made by the company at the hearing to answer questions and clarify any misinformation that may exist, and to present a full disclosure of information as it relates to the proposed facility.

There are several scenarios that could play out as a result of the hearing, according to Ramsden. “(The board) can do basically three things: They can uphold the appeal and turn down the development permit; they could uphold the permit and leave it as it was; or they

The hearing will take place at the Eckville Legion at 6:30 p.m. Open to the public, it’s being held at the Legion to allow for a larger number of people, as well as extra space for the provision of any evidence that may be presented.

A final decision on the matter may not be arrived at by the end of the hearing, and will be made in closed session.

Whatever the outcome, Ramsden hopes it will prove positive.

“I want what’s good for the community,” he said.

A community gathering of family, friends and neighbours on Saturday resulted in nearly $2,000 being raised for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Canada.

The backyard party, held in Westwood Lanes, saw about 50 people bid on a variety of silent auction items in support of the cause, and enjoy the musical entertainment of Flashback Freddy throughout the evening.

Treena Mielke, who both hosted and helped organize the party, was astounded by the level of generosity shown by those who attended.

“It still surprises me — the generosity and the enthusiasm,” she said. “It just gives you a really good feeling.”

This year marked the second time the party has been hosted by Mielke, whose husband and daughter both have MS. But the event wasn’t always intended to be a fundraiser, she explained.

“It started out as one of my bucket list items to just have a party outside with a fire and music and everything, kind of using MS as an afterthought to just raise money if people want to make a donation,” she said. “Then my sister said let’s do a silent auction, and the silent auction has really taken off.”

About $1,200 was raised through last year’s party, and Mielke was pleasantly surprised by its significant growth this year.

She’s planning on hosting it again next year, possibly in a small indoor venue. The move, she said, would allow for even more people to attend, and provide adequate shelter in the event of inclement weather.

“The heavens opened up (on Saturday) and it poured rain, which kind of added to it, and there were some people dancing in the rain,” she said.

“The tent helped, of course, but we’re thinking next year we might see about getting a small hall and maybe making it a bit bigger.”

Donations are still being accepted before the funds are delivered to the MS Society’s Central Alberta chapter in Red Deer.

Information on how to donate is available by calling Mielke at 403350-9453.

In the meantime, Mielke is hoping people will mark down next year’s party in their calendars.

“People just love it, and it’s so worthy,” she said. “It’s for a really good cause.”

Flyboarding taking off in Central Alberta JENNA SWAN RED DEER EXPRESS

A new sport has taken the world by a watery storm in the last few years.

Since its invention in 2011 by French watercraft rider Franky Zapata, flyboarding has since created a following around the world, North

America and locally in Sylvan Lake.

Co-owner of Alberta Flyboard Inc. Brody Wells said he will never forget the first time he witnessed the sport while searching YouTube.

“I had just purchased a jet-ski and was looking for new ways to make it a little bit more interesting and unique,” said Wells. “I came across a flyboarding video and thought to

myself what better way to go out and use your jet ski.”

Flyboarding works as an extension of your personal watercraft or Jet Ski by using that craft’s propulsion system to drive the flyboard through the air and water.

A flyboard rider will then stand on the board, connected to it by the boots on their feet, allowing them to seemingly fly through the air or dive head first through the water.

Continued from Page 14 Upon seeing the video, Wells contacted a company who allowed him to gain the rights to become the sole distributor and dealer for flyboards in Alberta. Along with a friend, Wells traveled to Florida to the company’s training facilities where he learned safety practices and techniques associated with the boards.

“The North American Championships really just spurred me to continue to push myself and continue training,” Brody Wells, co-owner of Alberta Flyboard Inc.

“In Florida we hopped into some fairly murky water that may have had more than a few alligators and crocodiles in it,” recalled Wells.

“When we got to the water there was a 6 ft. baby crocodile right beside the dock and the guys are saying ‘Oh that’s just a baby,’ and we’re just standing there thinking ‘What better incentive to stay above the water’.”

Soon after trying the sport, NBD Water Sports was created by Wells and his business partner Rodney Biggar, which has since undergone a rebrand to become Alberta Flyboarding in 2013.

Wells and Biggar have since started flyboarding locations in Cold Lake, Wabamun Lake, and Jackfish Lake and hope to have two to four more locations throughout Alberta in upcoming seasons.

Since the invention of the flyboard and its increasing popularity, competitions across the world have been popping up, including the Flyboarding World Championships, which were held in Doha, Qatar, in both 2012 and 2013.

Wells, along with a few associates, travelled to the games both years where Wells was among

the top 10 to compete in 2012. The crew of Canadians declared themselves the unofficial ‘Team Canada’ of the championships.

Recently the team travelled to the 2014 Flyboard North American Championships at the Waterfront Festival in Toronto June 20 to 22.

“The North American Championships really just spurred me to continue to push myself and continue training,” said Wells. “When I saw what skill level some of these riders are carrying with such an early sport, it really blew me away. There are a lot of people out there running double back flips and all sorts of crazy tricks.”

While Wells explained there have certainly been ups and downs to getting the sport going in Alberta, he said, “Seeing that reaction on people’s faces when they figure it out and the look of disbelief in their eyes when they get up on the board for the first time makes it all worth it.”

A particular struggle Wells faced in the early days of Alberta Flyboard was finding an insurance company to back such a new sport despite proven safety measures.

Kriekle recognized for contribution to minor football STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Sylvan Lake Bantam Lions football team marked the end of an era with a halftime presentation to recently-retired coach John Kriekle during their season opener at HJ Cody on Saturday.

Kriekle retired at the end of last season, ending his eight years of coaching minor football in Sylvan

Lake.

On Saturday, he was presented a framed jersey complete with the names of every player, coach and manager he worked with throughout his tenure.

“For me, it wasn’t really a sacrifice at all,” he said. “It was just coming out here and doing football with a bunch of friends — and I considered all of my players that I coached friends for life.”

Going back to school not such a bad thing after all Dear Editor, My name is Ayla Mykyte and I am a former student of Benalto School (Kindergarten to Grade 6). In my 12 years, I have never been in a better school.

What I love about this school is that they don’t just say their motto, ‘We care’ — they follow it every day.

Friends are everywhere. Everyone is willing to jump out and lend a hand if you are in need.

Currently, there are 37 pupils in this school and they all have had a once-in-a-lifetime experience on field trips or in regular classes.

Behind all fun times are the teachers, the parents, and the students, who all do everything from raising money, to just smiling.

We have split classes in Benalto. Some people shy away from split classes; however, from experience you really do learn more from “big kids.”

In this school, we have some celebrations and programs that are so great! For example, Reading Buddies is a reading program where big kids read to little kids and little kids read to big kids.

Another example is a program for older kids.

It’s a Leadership program that plans fun activities for the whole school acording to season, or just plain ol’ wacky hair days.

We also have a great celebration for Grade 6

farewell, and we even get to go to camp for one night and two days!

Parent council is always there to support a ton of field trips that we take throughout the year.

There are no words to describe the teachers; they are just awesome.

To conclude, it’s worth your time to check out Benalto School when you are thinking of an elementary school.

Continued from Page 17 Kriekle said he was honoured to be recognized, and admitted it felt a “little different” to be on the other side of the field as he watched the Lions’ home opener on Saturday against Hunting Hills Lightning — which the Lions lost 54-20.

Working with such a great group of youths is what he says he’ll miss most about being a coach.

“It’s just so delightful working with kids that aren’t tainted or spoiled by society,” he said. “They’re just honest, and they are what they are.”

Team manager Diana Zenert worked alongside Kriekle, and said she felt “privileged” to have him coach all three of her sons.

“It really does take a special person, I think, to be able to know the balance between being (a player’s) friend, and being their coach, and he really understands that balance,” she said. “Those boys respect him like no

other, and he’s able to get what he needs out of them, when he needs it, during games and otherwise.”

Lions coach Dave Berg also joined in the tributes to Kriekle, noting, “Once you are a teammate of John’s, and once you’ve played with him or coached with him, you are a friend for life. That’s just the way John is.”

Following the presentation, Coach Vic Sloboda announced the team would now be presenting a John Kriekle Ironman Award at its annual awards ceremony. Its recipient, he explained, will be a player who “plays the hardest, is most durable, and gives their all to Lions football.”

As for the future, Kriekle admits his days spent on the sideline are far from over, and he’s looking forward to taking in as many games as he can — as a spectator.

Just this weekend, he’s got trips to Calgary and Edmonton planned to watch Sylvan Lake Minor Football graduates as they compete at some of the highest levels of competition in the province.

“I’m taking an interest in that; seeing where the kids are going,” he said. “I’m still going to be involved in watching, that’s for sure.”
