The Decker Lake Forest Products sawmill's yard is located only 25 metres from the Endako River.

The findings from the oil sheen, including pictures taken are now with a ministry of environment compliance group for follow up.

Specifically this group will be looking at the possible impact on fish population in the Endako River and the area.

When reached for comment Steve Zika, Chief Executive Officer for Hampton Affiliates, the company that owns the sawmills at both Decker Lake and Babine said that he was unaware of any problems with the runoff from the yard causing posing a problem, but added that it will be something that will be looked into.

Evacuation order expanded

Evacuation order for the Chelaslie River fire has been expanded by the regional district Steven Maisey

The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) has expanded the evacuation order in regard to the Chelaslie River fire.

The forest fire that is located near Tweedsmuir Park, and encompasses the Entiako Provincial Park, as well.

The evacuation order was updated by the RDBN on Monday, Aug. 25 after the fire expanded to a total area of approximately 129,699 hectares over the weekend of Aug. 22-24.

The evacuation order is now in effect for the areas from the Eastern boundary of Tweedsmuir Park, including all of Tetachuck Lake, Chelaslie Arm and Euchu Reach to the Southern and Eastern boundaries of the RDBN’s Electoral Area ‘E’ (Ootsa/Francois Lake rural).

Evacuees are asked to leave the area immediately and to register at the Emergency Social Services (ESS) centre, which is located at the Burns Lake Heritage Centre, or register by contacting the ESS director at 250-251-0064.

The Emergency Social Service centre can provide assistance for evacuees in the form of food, lodging, clothing, emotional support and family reunification.

The Chelaslie River fire remains only 20 per cent contained by firefighting crews.

There are currently 284 firefighters, 15 helicopter units and 20 pieces of heavy equipment being used to fight the Chelaslie River forest fire.

The fire has caused the closure of the Entiako Provincial Park and for an area closure order to be issued by the Wildfire Management Branch.

The Kluskus Forest Service Road is closed at 118 km and Red Road is closed at 77.5 km.

The Chelaslie River fire is one of five forest fires in the Northwest Fire Centre’s region that is active that has burnt more than 10 hectares in area.

The four other fires in the Northwest Fire Centre’s region, over 10 hectares, include the China Nose Mountain fire, the Eutsuk Lake fire, the Deadwood Lake fire and the Copper River fire.

The Eutsuk Lake fire, located south of Smithers, has burned approximately 3750.

The Deadwood Lake fire is located Southwest of Deadwood Lake, North of Smithers near the B.C. and Yukon border.

The fire has burned approximately 2830 hectares.

The Copper River fire was discovered Aug. 22 has burned 42 hectares and is located just East of Terrace.

The Copper River fire is in the mop up stage.

The China Nose Mountain fire, which three weeks ago caused the communities of Burns Lake, Houston and the surrounding area between those two communities to be put on high evacuation alert, continues to be fought with success by firefighting crews.

The fire is now 50 per cent contained by crews.

Successful controlled burn off operations were also conducted by firefighting crews on the Southeastern flank.

The controlled burn off allows for greater containment of the fire as fuels between the containment line and the actual fire are burned off.

As well, crews continue to mop up the Northern and Southern flanks of the fire by extinguishing hot spots in the area.

On the Eastern flank, firefighting crews continue to set up a wet line of 100 feet to prevent further growth.

There are 151 firefighters, six helicopter units and 14 pieces of heavy equipment being used to battle the blaze.

As well, 40 support staff, including a Type One incident command team has been assigned to the fire.

There are still 152 active wildfires throughout the province.

Due to the high fire activity the Wildfire Management Branch has brought in an additional 85 out of province firefighters to help with suppression efforts.

Saying goodbye to Burns Lake

Bleak summer for ferry remake

Four months in the grand scheme of things is a very short time.

Four months is one semester at a university or college, and not even half the year of a high school or elementary school student.

Four months will also mark the end of my time in the Burns Lake community.

I am leaving my position as editor of the Lakes District News to pursue a new opportunity in my field.

I will be the new British Columbia Hockey League beat reporter for the Hockey Now. For me this is an excellent opportunity in taking the next step in my ultimate desire to write about sports for a living.

This new opportunity will allow me to hopefully flourish as a sports writer and to gain indispensable contacts within the BCHL community.

It will also mean that I will be able to move back the Vancouver area.

With that being said, it will still be sad to leave a community that I have called home for the past four months.

Being the editor of the newspaper you meet many community members over a short period of time, you get to know them, you get to tell their stories.

To the many people that have taken time out of their day to answer a question or to tell me their story I want to say thank you.

Hearing unique stories and being able to write them for many people to read is one of the reasons I enjoy my job so much, it’s about sharing the joys and happiness of people, and also about sharing in the sorrow and hardship.

Being a journalist isn’t always an easy job, it means having to ask the hard questions some of the time, and in a small community that means being guaranteed to see that person around town.

For those who I’ve asked these tough question of, I hope you understand that I had a job to do.

Over my short time here I have been pulled aside and told by whomever that they found a spelling mistake, or a grammatical mistake in one of my articles.

I never took the pointing out as criticism, but rather as caring.

People in this community care about their local newspaper, and trust me that is something that isn’t always the case in some communities.

To Laura, Kim and Annamarie, thank you for helping me these past four months at the newspaper.

It truly takes a team effort to produce a newspaper each week, along with all the updates to various websites.

This newspaper wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and effort that you three put in each week.

You all made doing my job a lot easier.

Finally I would like to thank Laura, specifically.

There are very few publishers that would give someone fresh out of school, looking for their first opportunity to be the editor of a community paper.

It is a position that carries with it a lot of responsibility.

Thank you for giving me the chance to prove myself capable.

I will end on this; thank you Burns Lake and remember no matter what, always double check your spelling of the word public.

It was to avoid ordering a replacement for the Queen of Chilliwack, which sailed directly between Port Hardy and Bella Coola.

This summer the first leg was consolidated with the Northern Expedition, the vessel that replaced the doomed Queen of the North on the Inside Passage run up to Prince Rupert. At Bella Bella, after a layover of a couple of hours, the Nimpkish took over with space for 16 standard vehicles on its deck and a midnight arrival time in Bella Coola.

The direct route had been mainly used by European tourists, who sailed from the Lower Mainland to Victoria, drove the length of the Island, ferried to Bella Coola and drove through the rugged Chilcotin to Williams Lake and back down south to complete the circle tour.

The new route incorporated stops in remote outposts Ocean Falls and Shearwater, making it even longer. Warnings came early.

“That’s where 90 per cent of the [BC Ferries] money is being lost, on the milk runs, and that’s the part they are keeping,” Petrus Rykes, a tourism operator at Anahim Lake for 40 years, said in March.

“The part they’ve cancelled was at 70 per cent capacity, the second highest of all the fleet routes.”

Reports of a bad slump have come to pass. The changes meant bookings couldn’t be made until April, too late for most international travelers.

A survey by Bella Coola Valley Tourism in mid-summer found most operators losing business, from 10 to 90 per cent.

A bus tour of Canadian seniors heading west from Williams Lake was terminated after 14 years.

One tourism operator on Highway 20 is considering closing down.

Stone and his family took the new route themselves in early August, with the minister offering sunny reports on his blog.

Stone summed up his experience this way: “At the end of the day, my assessment is that the Nimpkish is a good tourism product if tourists are made fully aware as to the type of service it provides. If correct expectations are set, I believe the Nimpkish can be marketed as a valuable tourism component of the Discovery Coast Circle Tour.

“The decision to do this rests squarely on the shoulders of the tourism industry and tourism operators who need to decide whether or not they want this service to work, to grow and to be viable in order to capture a share of the thousands of international tourists looking for exactly the kind of adventure the Nimpkish provides.”

Got that, Discovery Coast tourism folks?

If this milk run doesn’t work next year, it will be your fault. Heck, the Nimpkish has free snacks and drinks for your 10-hour voyage, much of it in the dark.

There was an uproar in the B.C. legislature this spring when Transportation Minister Todd Stone went ahead with $19 million in cuts to low-usage coastal ferry routes.

The plan had been laid out in detail before last year’s election. It targeted sailings where ridership was in the low teens or even single digits. On some sailings the Transport Canadamandated crew outnumbered the passengers.

Despite the cries of doom, most of the sailing reductions have been managed – with one glaring exception.

The Discovery Coast Circle Tour route saw its ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola replaced, using the smallest vessel in the BC Ferries fleet, the open-decked Nimpkish.

Infected horses serve as West Nile reminder of the virus

Positive tests for West Nile virus in two horses near Cache Creek serve as a fresh reminder that humans could also be infected by the mosquito-borne disease, health officials say.

“It’s not too surprising,” said deputy provincial health officer Bonnie Henry. “But it would be the first indication we have this year of any West Nile virus activity.”

She noted the two horses haven’t yet been confirmed as West Nile cases by the province. They were reported Monday by the Society of B.C. Veterinarians, which cautioned owners of horses against scrimping on their vaccinations.

There have been three bitten-in-B.C. West Nile infections among people over the years, in addition to the more than 40 other cases contracted out of province.

All the local infections happened in 2009 in the Southern Interior, Henry said, with most of the positive tests of mosquitoes and birds occurring in the South Okanagan.

Henry said horses act as “end hosts” like humans – they don’t act as a virus reservoir like corvid birds and increase the risk of transmission to people.

“This is another indicator that West Nile virus can be out there,” she said. “This would be the highest risk time of year.”

Most people bitten by an infected mosquito have no symptoms but in about 20 per cent of cases, those infected develop a fever, headaches and rash.

About one in 150 will experience severe complications such as meningitis and about one in 1000 will die.

The best way to avoid West Nile virus is to prevent mosquito bites: wear light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants, especially in the early morning and evening; use repellants with DEET and lemon eucalyptus oil; and eliminate standing water in your yard. Health officials are reminding the public to be vary of the West Nile virus.

Legebokoff faces rapidfire cross-examination

CODY LEGEBOKOFF TERESA MALLAM During a rapid-fire cross-examination by Crown prosecutor Joseph Temple, accused serial killer Cody Alan Legebokoff appeared flustered on Wednesday when he agreed he’d gotten mixed up about “who was who” in his testimony heard Tuesday.

Temple referred Legebokoff to an answer given to defence lawyer James Heller at one point that it was “Y” who was on top of Natasha Montgomery, in the throws of a struggle, as he (Legebokoff) and Z stood by watching.

“[That was] an error on my part,” said Legebokoff.

However Temple suggested the reason he “couldn’t keep it straight” is because they – X,Y or Z – were not there. Indeed, there is no X, Y or Z, Temple suggested. Instead, he posed the theory that Montgomery came alone to Legebokoff’s Liard Drive apartment as a source of cocaine for him and that there was no one else in the apartment except Legebokoff.

Defence lawyer James Heller said he had no reexamination after Temple’s questions ended, however B.C. Supreme Court Justice Glen Parrett, in what he said was “an abundance caution,” referred Legebokoff to page 56 of a court transcript with a passage in which he’d said to Heller that X was on top of Montgomery.

Although that salvo in Temple’s gatling-gun style delivery had appeared to fizzle, he’d had plenty more for Legebokoff whose demeanor became less confident and more combative towards the end of the day. Detail by detail, crime scene by crime scene, Temple worked his way through events surrounding all four murders with questions that pointed out inconsistencies in what Legebokoff told the court on Tuesday. For instance, if Leslie cut her own throat and had suffered blows from a wrench, and he did find her lying on the ground, a few feet from his truck, why was a large pool of her blood (and her iPod) found some distance away?

Temple suggested Leslie had tried to run away from Legebokoff who tracked her down and killed her. Legebokoff denied that his account of Leslie’s death was untrue, insisting he’d been pacing back and forth in the snow and at one point, used a branch to cover his tracks. ...see LEGEBOKOFF

To The future clarify

To a local resident concerned about the discrepancies in the Aug. 20 issue of the Lakes District News regarding the salmon stock in Quesnel Lake due to the Mount Polley Mine disaster. To clarify that the two letters in question are a matter of opinion and aren’t reflective of the reporting done on the subject that appear in the Lakes District News, or on our website.

Editor: If we want to look into the future and see what the power of nature has in store for us following the Mount Polley tailings dam failure, look no further than the experience of the small town of Aznalcóllar near Saville Spain.

A similar dam failure occurred. In a report issued six years after the incident, it was noted that any waterways that may have been contaminated had restored themselves and sixteen permanent water testing stations continue to show safe levels for drinking water.

Monitoring of soil contamination in the area affected shows low contamination and the riverbed has been recolonized by fish and amphibians.

Over the span of a few years, the ecosystem of Aznalcóllar has improved naturally. The natural dynamic of the river, particularly the flood plains, has fully recuperated. Six years from now, this is the future we can fully expect to see at Mount Polley.

The logical next step

Editor: Despite all the uproar, it seems to me that the natural “next step” one would expect in the Polley Lake mine dam breach situation is already taking place just as it should: The B.C. Government has convened an independent panel of engineers with the expertise and experience to do a forensic investigation to determine a) why the dam failed and b) how to ensure that it does not happen again.

The expert panel has been given the authority to compel testimony and evidence while the Minister in charge, Bill Bennett, has ordered that every tailings pond in B.C., and its associated dam, go through a mandatory, but extraordinary, independent inspection by December first, to be paid for by the mining companies themselves.

The company involved at the Polley Lake Mine

has already started to clean up the site and is preparing a long term remediation plan for the affected water ways.

Water in the region has been tested repeatedly and found to be fully fit for human consumption, and the government continues to have independent specialists conducting water and sediment contamination tests at multiple sites.

Despite all of this, many special interest groups continue to sensationalize this unusual incident and misrepresent how it is being dealt with when it is clear that all things are unfolding as they should in response to the situation. I say kudos to all involved in making things right!

Have some perspective

Editor: Perhaps it’s just me, but I really don’t understand the need for all of the misleading technical data that is being reported in relation to the Polley Lake tailings pond. The contents of the pond water can certainly be measured, but just because you can measure something doesn’t mean it’s bad for you.

Pregnancy is an exciting time of change and hope for many women, but it can also be surprisingly lonely and stressful. For some women pregnancy can isolate them from friends and the activities that they enjoy. Many people know that drinking during pregnancy is not good for the baby, but they may not know how much risk is involved.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a spectrum of physical and mental challenges and delays affecting people all over the world and it is considered to be the most common form of preventable birth disorder in the Western world. Health Canada conservatively estimates that approximately 9 out of every 1000 children born in Canada are affected by prenatal alcohol exposure.

Out of the following women, who do you think is at risk for giving birth to a child with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder?

• A college educated woman has heard conflicting information about the risk of alcohol use during pregnancy, and she continues to drink alcohol at business and social gatherings.

• A girl in high school likes to binge drink on the weekends with her boyfriend and friends; sometimes she blacks out.

• woman is upset because she has recently confirmed that she is pregnant; this was unplanned and she feels that she does not have anyone in her life that she can count on to help her through the pregnancy. She has an alcohol addiction and she drinks when she feels overwhelmed.

The answer is all three women.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is an equal opportunity disability – Sterling Clarren Studies have shown that there is no known safe time to drink during pregnancy and there is no known safe amount. The effects of prenatal alcohol exposure might range from mild to severe. Binge drinking (4 or more drinks on one occasion) increases the risk to the fetus directly with the amount of alcohol consumed as a fetus lacks the ability to

effectively metabolize alcohol. Women and their partners can reduce the risk of alcohol exposure, by avoiding alcohol if planning a pregnancy and using effective contraception if consuming alcohol.

Addiction can be difficult to comprehend, however understanding addiction is one of the keys to preventing FASD; the Canadian FASD research Network identifies contributing factors that increase the risk of addiction including poverty, experience of violence, stigma and racial discrimination, experiences of loss or stress, and isolation. Accurate information, non-judgemental support from professionals, families and friends, and adequate services can promote healthy pregnancies “Preventing FASD is more than just telling women not to drink alcohol during pregnancy” – CanFASD Any woman of childbearing age is at risk of having a child with FASD if alcohol is consumed. In Canada 50 per cent of pregnancies are unplanned and women often do not know they are pregnant before six weeks gestation or more, hence; they could unknowingly drink during pregnancy. Other factors that contribute to FASD include: conflicting messages about the risks of alcohol use during pregnancy; a lack of awareness of the effects of prenatal alcohol; domestic violence; mental health issues; and addiction.

Women struggling with addiction may not be able to stop drinking without adequate treatment and support. Individuals who live with FASD may lack the ability to make informed healthy decisions on their own.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Day is an opportunity to reflect on FASD prevention and healthy pregnancies and to recognize and support those who live with FASD and their unique lifelong challenges. Learn more about FASD, share what you have learned, and support pregnant women in your life.

Please help raise awareness by joining the College of New Caledonia on Tuesday Sept. 9 2014 in recognizing International FASD Awareness Day.

The FASD Day symbol is the butterfly.

Legebokoff faces cross-examination LEGEBOKOFF from t P5 Temple asked him why if Leslie did have sex with him, twice, as he said, why hadn’t the lab found his DNA in Leslie’s vaginal or anal area? The accused insisted they’d had sex, he had no explanation for the results. Sometimes Legebokoff gave short answers, other times he seemed annoyed with Temple’s barrage of questions and became sarcastic.

At one point, Parrett admonished Legebokoff.

“You are arguing… if you can address the questions, that’s fine,” he said.

Temple asked about Stuchenko’s slaying and Legebokoff’s allegedly minor part in that, throwing away her bloodied clothes as instructed and cleaning up after X and Y who he’d claimed took her body “into the night” and pointed out similarities in structure between that account and a story Legebokoff fabricated about his friend shooting a deer.

Legebokoff responded the two stories were “apples and oranges.”

Temple pressed, suggesting many aspects of the murders had common threads such as the same male culprits, X,Y and Z (except with Leslie,) similar manner of death by blows to the head, throats cut, etc. and the dragging and disposal of bodies. Legebokoff did admit to Temple he’d lied earlier about his involvement in the women’s deaths, he’d lied to a conservation officer, lied in his statements to police, lied to his girlfriend Amy. But he insisted the accounts he gave Tuesday about the murderous actions of X,Y and Z were all true.

When Temple presented him with Exhibit 30, autopsy photos of Loren Leslie, Legebokoff quickly sipped from his glass of water as he turned the pages. Temple explained the photos were of Leslie’s head after they’d shaved off her hair to see the full extent of her injuries, injuries the Crown counsel suggested, were caused by Legebokoff when he hit her on the head with a pipe wrench and her neck puncture was caused when Legebokoff cut her with his knife because she was struggling.

During his cross-examination,Temple posed very different scenarios than those Legebokoff described. In one exchange, Temple had suggested injuries to Leslie’s hands were likely defensive wounds from trying to protect herself from Legebokoff as he was hitting her with a pipe. Legebokoff said they may have been caused by him dragging her body (he earlier testified her hands got in the way) into the bushes and when Temple thought that was unlikely, given the snow, Legebokoff bolstered his answer insisting it was possible with a 250-pound guy stepping on it and rocks under the snow.

“I take it that is your weight?” asked Parrett.

“It was at the time,” said Legebokoff.

“And your height?”

“Six foot two.”

Temple also asked Legebokoff about his stated reason (in his testimony heard Tuesday) for not naming X,Y and Z for fear of being labelled a “rat” in the federal penitentiary system but did not seem worried about being in there as a sexual offender.

“Well, I’m not one of them,” said Legebokoff.

Legebokoff, 24, is charged with four counts of first degree in the deaths of three area women, Jill Stuchenko, Natasha Montgomery and Cynthia Maas, and 15-year-old Loren Leslie. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

On Wednesday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Glen Parrett told the 14-person jury they were excused until Tuesday. He apologized for their short week, but said the days they sat this week were “important days.”

Parrett explained if counsel began closing arguments Friday, there would be a three day gap (over the long weekend) before they heard the other side. Both defence and Crown lawyers could each take a day or more to complete their arguments, he said.

Earlier Wednesday, Mr. Justice Parrett said an application for contempt of court stemming from Legebokoff’s repeated refusal to put a name to Mr. X , would be heard at the conclusion of this trial.

Moments after the Crown formally closed its case in the Cody Alan Legebokoff murder trial Tuesday morning, the accused killer took the stand and related his version of how female victims Jill Stuchenko and Cynthia Maas met their violent

deaths at the hands of drug dealers.

Legebokoff told the court that during his testimony he would identify the drug dealers not by their names but by the letters X,Y, and Z . The reason for that, he said, was there were “three people involved in these charges … [and] for what I’ve done

Defence lawyer James Heller who had earlier explained that Legebokoff had elected to take the stand in his own defence, reminded his client that in fact he’d been charged with the murders of four women.

“Yes,” said Legebokoff.

His testimony had begun with details about his childhood taking family trips and getting his driver’s licence as soon as he could.

He described various jobs he’d worked on in B.C. and in Lethbridge, Alberta where he met new friends before becoming homesick and moving back home in Fort St. James. Soon however he left for Prince George. He described his heavy party scene lifestyle where “sometimes 100 people would show up,” his so-

cial life – dating and his internet exchanges with women which resulted in both friendships and sexual encounters and his cocaine and alcohol-fueled parties at both the Carney Street rental house he shared with roommates and the Liard Drive apartment where he lived alone.

He was 20 years old when RCMP arrested him near Vanderhoof in Nov. 2010 and later charged him with the murders, he said.

Legebokoff, now 24, is also charged with first degree murder with respect to Loren Leslie,15, whose body was found near a gravel pit off Highway 27 and Natasha Montgomery whose body has never been found.

On the stand, Legebokoff detailed his drug use which progressed from drinking starting at age 12 or 13 while “pissing around” with friends, to smoking marijuana and using “magic” mushrooms,

to his frequent use of crack cocaine as a young adult, he said.

He met “X” and got cocaine from him while also doing runs for him when the dealer needed to replenish his supply.

Legebokoff said he first met Jill Stuchenko one weekend in 2009 when his roommates had gone home and he had the house to himself. She arrived at his house with several other people, he said. They all partied and did drugs together. Legebokoff said at first while he was sitting on a futon, “X” and “Y” were sitting on a basement couch with Stuchenko, across from him, and he noticed that she “wasn’t an ugly woman … so I thought I’d try my luck…”

Did you have any role in the murder of Jill Stuchenko?” Heller asked.

“Yes, I did,” said Legebokoff.

His testimony continued later that afternoon.

Dry weather leads to drought conditions, possible water shortage Water levels in Skeena and Bulkley watersheds near drought like conditions as dry weather affects more than just forest fires Steven Maisey A long spell of dry weather has left water levels in watersheds in the Skeena and Bulkley regions low, raising concerns about drought conditions in both watersheds.

In a press release from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO), residents in the Skeena and Bulkley regions, which includes the community of Burns Lake, are being urged to reduce water consumption.

According to the ministry with weather conditions expected to remain dry, the Skeena and Bulkley regions are experiencing level three drought conditions.

Level three drought conditions call for the voluntary reduction of water use by 20 per cent or more from all municipal, agriculture and industrial users, and residents within these regions are being urged to obey municipal water conservation bylaws.

The River Forecast Centre has issued a low stream flow advisory for the Skeena and Bulkley Rivers and their tributaries as weather conditions continue to have a negative affect on water levels.

NRO water levels in rivers and lakes are near minimum levels for this time of the year, although well above the lowest levels that are reached during the winter months.

"Typically the lowest flows and lake levels occur over the winter period, so the flows that are currently being observed are low relative to what is normal for this time of year, but they are still well above levels that would typically be reached through the winter," Bethel said.

The low flow conditions are a result of persistent dry and hot weather over the summer, as well as lower than normal snow packs this year, according to Bethel.

"April 1 snow packs were 85 per cent of normal in the Skeena Basin, including the Bulkley region, and 80 per cent of normal in the Nechako Basin," Bethel said, "Precipitation has been about 50-70 per cent of normal through July and 40 per cent through August."

According to stats from the MFLNRO, temperatures in the region were also one to two degrees about normal in June and two to four degrees about normal through July.

Staff from the MFLNRO have been closely monitoring water levels and the drought level could rise if the current trend of hot and dry weather holds up.

A level four drought condition is the highest rating given by the MFLNRO. Drought levels are determined by a number of factors, including regional stream flow, water storage capacity, ecological concerns, weather forecasts and impacts on water users.

If conditions reach a point where level four drought conditions are issued then provincial water managers could exercise their authority to temporarily suspend short-term water permits or licenses in the affected watersheds. ...see DROUGHT

The request for these personnel was made through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC).

All costs will be covered by B.C. Forest Fires across B.C. this year have burned approximately 330,000 hectares.

So far the province has spent

$246 million fighting forest fires this year, nearly four times the budget, and has surpassed the $212 million spent in 2010.

The campfire ban issued by the Northwest Fire Centre was rescinded effective Aug. 27 at 4 p.m.

Campfires, outdoor stoves and other portable campfire apparatuses and tiki torches will once again be allowed in the region.

However, category two and three open burning, burn barrels, fireworks and sky lanterns remain banned.

The ban on open burning will remain in place until Sept. 15 or until the public is otherwise notified.

Anyone found in violation of the ban can be issued a ticket for $345, or if convicted in court fined $100,000 and sentenced to a year in prison.

As well, a violation that causes or contributes to a wildfire may be subjected to a $10,000 fine and pay all firefighting and associated costs.

The lodge sits near the base of the Sibola Mountain Range. To get to the Nadina Lake Lodge, turn off Hwy. 16 on to the Morice River Forest Service Road and follow the road for roughly 57 km. Next turn right on to the Nadina Forest Service Road and follow the road to the 74 km sign.

The Burns Lake Mountain Bike Association has settled on a date for the rescheduling of the Big Pig Mountain Bike Festival. The mountain bike festival, which features the Dante’s Inferno cross country race, has been rescheduled for the weekend from Friday, Sept. 26 to Sunday, Sept. 28. Originally the Big Pig festival was set to take place from Aug. 15-17. However, due to the wildfires in the area, specifically the China Nose Mountain fire, which caused the evacuation of STEVEN MAISEY PHOTO many homes in the area, the mountain bike association postponed the event.

Short on players, the Houston Luckies dropped out of the CIHL season this year.

“We just didn’t feel that we had enough players this year,” said Luckies President Shane Brienen.

The executive made the decision at the pre-season meeting, after attempts to pull together a team repeatedly failed.

Brienen says no new players were coming in, a few older play-

ers weren’t sure if they would play, and two players were gone to trades school.

“We really would have liked to play this year, but we didn’t want to let the league down either with not being able to make the road games,” he said, adding that they were barely making it with the players they had last year.

They’re disappointed, Brienen said, but hoping to be back in the following season. Vanderhoof and MacKenzie might have CIHL teams to hit the ice next season as well, Brienen said.

Kids take to rawkin’ out Lakes District style Rawk Camp 2014 took place last week in Grassy Plains and Burns Lake. Approximately 40 youngsters played guitar, drums and keyboards, and presented rock shows at the Grassy Plains Hall and Beacon Theatre. The School of Rawk is taught by Graeme Peters, Jodi Peters and Ian March, members of the band, Speed Control, from Whitehorse. The Lakes District Arts Council was able to present the camps on the Southside and in Burns Lake with the support of Village of Burns Lake, the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako and the Lakes District business community. Rawk Camp 2014 was made possible by grants from ComFor Management Services Ltd., the Burns Lake and District Community Foundation and the BC Arts Council.

Six weeks of advanced training culminates in an 18day expedition Steven Maisey

A six week army cadet expedition instructor course held at the Vernon Cadet Summer Training Centre was attended

by Burns Lake resident and army cadet, Nicholas Thompson this summer.

The six week course held in Vernon teaches cadets a number of skills, including first aid training, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing and navigation skills.

Thompson, a member of the 3080 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, left for the camp in Vernon on July 5 and returned to Burns Lake on the evening of Aug. 16.

A major part of the six week training camp is an 18 day expedition that the cadets go on.

The expedition takes them by canoe, mountain bike and on foot from Sicamous, B.C. to Cathedral provincial park, which is located in Keremeos, B.C., near the Canada and United States border.

This year the army cadets paddled in canoes the Shuswap River and Mara Lake, they hiked through the Larch Hills and mountain biked their way through the Kettle Valley Railway before ending the expedition by hiking the mountains of Cathedral provincial park.

Thompson says that the training camp was tougher than an average summer training camp for cadets, noting that dealing with the varying weather was one of the most challenging aspects of the camp

and expedition.

"It was really hot in Vernon. Then in some places that we went on the 18 day outdoor camp and expedition it was wet and cold in some spots and it even snowed in some of the spots we were at," Thompson said, "It was a little treacherous, frightening and scary at certain points, but it was an experience. The 18 day expedition was challenging because of the weather, that it was just cold most of the time."

Thompson enrolled in the army cadets when he was a little older than 12-yearsold and has been with the cadets for three years now.

He originally joined the cadets because he was curious about what they did, and that curiosity was influenced and encouraged by other members of the cadets.

It is something that Thompson has grown attached to.

The cadet program is a national program for young Canadians aged 12-18 who are interested in fun, challenging and rewarding activities.

Along with the activities that the cadets are able to enjoy, they learn about the army, naval and air force divisions of the Canadian Armed Forces, while learning about teamwork, leadership and citizenship.

Thompson has given a little thought about his future with the cadets, but insists that right now he is focused on graduating high school.

"I would possibility consider continuing on with the army cadets in the future. I wasn't planning on, and I'm still not planning on going to far with the cadets.

I'll probably stay a non commis-

sioned officer and graduate high school," Thompson said.

Thompson says he would recommend the cadets to other community members because of his experiences.

"I enjoy the army cadets because of the experiences that you are put through and situations you get to put yourself in," Thompson said, "Things like going to Vernon for more advanced training, I got to go parachuting in Ontario and I even got to head over to Europe to do a tour with the army."

Dale and Elizabeth On 5 September 1954, Dale and Elizabeth Hawse (nee Tedesco) were married. 2014 would have been their 60th wedding anniversary.

Their wedding was held on a sunny day in early autumn. The bride wore a pale blue shantung silk suit with a white linen collar, white gloves and hat, and a bouquet of pansies. The groom was in his air force uniform (it being the only suit he owned), his hat tilted at the jaunty angle of a salute. It was an intimate family ceremony at the Don Hawse home in Tintagel. The bride was recently arrived in Canada from Scotland, and Dale and Elizabeth had met in Ontario while Dale was stationed in the Royal Canadian Air Force Station Trenton. 18 year old Elizabeth travelled from Ontario by train to make her life in BC. Dale and Elizabeth made their home at Tintagel, where they shared a love of travel, music, and time with their treasured grandchildren (Theo, Jeff, Drake, Dylan, Gavin, Quinn, Zara, Isabella), collecting and refinishing antiques, and nurturing a rough patch of land into a green and productive garden. Much to her joy, Elizabeth’s garden was featured in an edition of the Lakes District News, and her baking won her a coveted silver plate at the Fall Fair.

Dale’s joys included building a skating rink in the garden for his boys and a boat for camping out on the lake, collecting vintage radios, and spending time with his grandkids.

Their lives were well and generously lived. Mum, dad, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, grandma, poppa, friend, neighbour - in these and other roles you played, you are both much loved and sorely missed.

Firefighters for the Burns Lake Fire Department responded to a call early Tuesday morning of a residential house that had caught fire. The house at 326 Fifth Ave. caught fire just after midnight on Tuesday morning. Crews from the fire department, as well as two paramedics and one Burns Lake RCMP officer responded to the fire. According to Corp.

Terry Gillespie the fire was deemed non-suspicious after a thorough investigation from the fire department’s arson investigator and two members of the Forensic Identification Section.

Nadina Lake is famous for its wild Rainbow trout which can reach 10+ lbs. Nadina also contains good populations of Kokanee. However, it’s the large Rainbow that fishermen are after and it is best accomplished by trolling with spoons, plugs or spinners. Don’t forget the fly, as many large Rainbows have fallen prey to a well dressed Doc Spratley.

From Houston travel west bound on Highway 16 for about 3 kms turning off the highway on the Morice River Forest Service Road. Stay left (east) at the 27 km mark junction of the road keeping on the Morice-Owen Forest Service Road. At the 56 km mark, turn left (west) onto the Morice-Nadina Forest Service Road, and follow the road to the 74 km mark onto the Hill Trout FSR. Turn right (west), shortly after crossing the river this side road meets up with the Morice-Tahtsa Forest Service Road, a few km before meeting a fork to the recreation site or lodge.
