Horner in hot seat FINANCE MINISTER CALLED ON TO RESIGN OVER FLIGHT REVELATIONS BY THE CANADIAN PRESS

In other council news: The City Centre Stage building in downtown Red Deer is getting a new name and a new sign. Council heard that Red Deer College is planning to re-name its building at 4922-49th Street. Michael Donlevy, RDC’s vice-president of Enterprise and Community Relations, said RDC will be honouring a philanthropic gift from a family. It will be called the event centre with the family’s name associated with it. An announcement will be made in the coming weeks. The issue came up during debate on the college’s request to upgrade its 45-year-old City Centre Stage sign. Donlevy told council that the old sign has reached its expiry date. “This was a natural extension of the renovations that we have already done to that building,” said Donlevy.

CALGARY — The Opposition Wildrose party is calling on Alberta Finance Minister Doug Horner to resign and to pay the cost of flying family members on government aircraft. “The man in charge of making sure that the government airfleet was being used properly and within the rules is just as guilty as his cabinet colleagues in abusing the fleet,” Wildrose finance critic Rob Anderson told a news conference Tuesday. “In fact, he is more guilty than almost anyone of his cabinet colleagues. “Not only was Mr. Horner turning a blind eye to the abuses of (former) premier (Alison) Redford and other colleagues, he was actively taking part in abusing the government fleet.” Anderson’s comments followed a CBC report that said a review of government flight logs showed that Horner took his wife with him on government aircraft at least 23 times dating back to 2007. Horner was not available for comment. But his office sent out an email detailing 11 round-trip flights taken by Horner’s wife since 2007 to ceremonial events such as the funerals of former premiers Peter Lougheed and Ralph Klein. Horner was within the rules, said the email, noting that “the legislative assembly entitles all MLAs to claim four flights for their spouses each year, which speaks to the expectation that spouses attend events with elected officials.” The PC government has been under fire for almost all of 2014 over revelations of entitlement and abuse of taxpayer-funded political perks such as government planes. Last month, Alberta’s auditor general released a report saying Redford and her staff used the power of the province’s top political office to break expense rules and inappropriately use taxpayer money, in some cases for personal gain.

Councillors excited by ‘naturally exquisite’ neighbourhood BY CRYSTAL RHYNO ADVOCATE STAFF Boasting natural areas, mixed land uses and connectivity, the city’s newest neighbourhood in northeast Red Deer is taking shape. City council gave first reading to the proposed Evergreen Neighbourhood Area Structure Plan, which is situated northeast of the 67th Street and 30th Avenue intersection on Tuesday. This will be the first neighbourhood completely designed under city’s new neighbourhood planning and design standards, such as unique neighbourhood identity, integrated parks and community spaces. The guidelines were approved in September 2013. Council heard the new community was dubbed “naturally exquisite” because the site embraces the natural water features, green spaces and mature woodlands. Most councillors said they were excited about the variety in the space including natural playgrounds, different options for housing, and land uses.

Coun. Ken Johnston said he often hears about the need for Red Deer to be competitive in various aspects. “The beauty of Evergreen is not just its natural features and its designs but that it is competitive across income levels, demographics and housing options,” said Johnston. “And it offers the very, very superior quality of life versus some of our neighbours around us . . . I am very, very excited here.” Coun. Buck Buchanan said he is pleased the neighbourhood guidelines are being plugged into the new community. Kim Fowler, the city’s director of planning, said the Evergreen development is also part of the city’s new section-based planning. “You can see how well the trails, the natural areas and the roads are now connected as well as the community amenities that provide those larger connections,” said Fowler. “We’ve had a very good response from the development community from those quarter section owners.” The plan was endorsed by the Municipal Planning Commission on Aug.

26. A public hearing is set for Sept. 26 in council chambers.

Miss Mermaid relocating to Gull Lake BY LANA MICHELIN ADVOCATE STAFF The Mermaid will churn the waters again next summer — only this time on Gull Lake. The large, paddlewheel-style boat that’s been part of Sylvan lake’s history for the past 30 years is being transported to Gull Lake by its new owner. Red Deer resident Mark Linton said he saw the familiar red-and-white vessel sitting in dry dock for sale and something about it tweaked his nostalgic interest. “It’s been around as long as I can remember,” said Linton, who remembers the 14-foot-wide-by-48-feet-long boat being a fixture of Sylvan Lake since his youth in the early 1980s. “That’s why I decided to buy the boat, I wanted to preserve it,” said Linton, who paid $60,000 for it. “I’m also a real Disney fan,” he added, referring to the Mark Twain pad-

dle-wheel steamship that’s a feature attraction at Disneyland. Linton’s wife convinced him to take his first Disney holiday while he was recovering from cancer treatments. Even though his cancer has been in remission for the past six years, he and his family have been back to the feelgood theme park multiple times since. The owner of the DJ company On the Mark sees a kind of crossover appeal in running a dinner/dance boat on Gull Lake as well. “This will give me something to do seven days a week,” during summer months, said Linton, who’s already planning theme trips such as ice cream Sundays and pirate cruises. He intends to renovate the boat’s interior this fall to wood panelling from its current carpeted pink and sea-foam green “’80s look.”
