A South Surrey brokerage firm has had its licence suspended “in the public interest,” after allegedly failing to account for monies entrusted to them by clients.

A news release issued by the Real Estate Council of B.C. indicates the suspension levied against 8th Avenue Elite Realty Ltd. took effect Aug. 26 and remains in effect “until further notice.”

“8th Avenue Elite Realty Ltd. is prohibited from providing real estate services to or on behalf of any member of the public as a result of this order,” the release states.

The order was issued under Sec. 45 of the Real Estate Services Act, which pertains to orders issued in “urgent circumstances.”

Marilee Peters, communications officer for the provincial regulatory agency, said she could not disclose when investigation into the brokerage began, the value of monies unaccounted for or the number of clients affected.

She did say that such orders are rare.

Peters said “slightly less than 70” real estate agents were licensed under 8th Avenue, which was operating out of Morgan Creek Corporate Centre, at 210-15252 32 Ave. The disciplinary step does not prevent those agents from transferring their licence to another brokerage.

Efforts to contact officials at 8th Avenue were unsuccessful. The business’s website has been taken down, the second-floor office is dark and calls to the phone number listed for contact were met with a busy signal.

A note posted on the brokerage’s Facebook page Aug. 25 appeals for information on the whereabouts of two individuals.

“The staff has left and the commission cheques are not being paid!” writes Julia Greene. “Please contact the Real Estate Council if you know anything…”

A year-and-a-half after making the commitment, the province announced last week it will now provide funds to build a new high school in Surrey and put additions onto three elementary schools.

The province called a media conference Thursday morning to re-announce the construction of a $55-million high school in Clayton North and $9.4 million for three elementary school additions. About $46 million of that is being funded by the province, while the school district has committed to $19 million.

The new school will provide 1,500 spaces for students from Grade 8 to 12, helping relieve cramped conditions at Clayton Heights and Lord Tweedsmuir secondary schools.

The government already committed to the project back in February 2013, but until Thursday, had not come through with the much-needed funds in the rapidly growing neighbourhood.

It’s anticipated the school will be completed by spring 2017.

In addition, 16 new classroom additions were announced for three overcrowded elementary schools, including Adams Road, Rosemary Heights and Morgan.

Wildfire season among B.C.’s worst ▶ TOTAL AREA BURNED WILL SOON PASS 2010 TALLY JEFF NAGEL

This summer’s wildfire season will go down as one of the most destructive on record in B.C. As of late last week, fires had burned up more than 330,000 hectares across the province and are expected to soon surpass the 337,000 hectares destroyed in the 2010 fire season.

This year is still far short of 1958, when 856,000 hectares burned, but 2014 could move into fifth place if it surpasses 1950’s 343,339 hectares, or even third if it tops the 351,000 lost in 1971.

While much timber has burned, no homes or other significant structures have been lost this year, so by that measure it’s been nowhere near as catastrophic as the 2003 fire season, when more than 300 homes were lost or damaged in the Okanagan Mountain and McClure fires.

But it has been costly.

The province has so far spent more than $246 million fighting wildfires, almost four times what was budgeted, and more than the $212 million expended in 2010.

Despite wet weather on the Labour Day weekend, fire officials are bracing for more warm dry spells in September.

“It’s unlikely we’ve seen the end of the fire season by any stretch of the imagination,” fire information officer Dustin Eno said.

The actual number of fires this year – just over 1,300 – is well below the average of 1,600 a year.

But many of the fires have been very large.

The biggest, and still only 20 per cent

contained, is the 130,000-hectare Chelaslie River fire, which is between Anahim Lake and Burns Lake, near Entiako and Tweedsmuir provincial parks. Homes remain under evacuation order there.

Unacceptable tax hike in disguise

The provincial government announced its latest tax hike last week.

As has been the case in recent years, it did so indirectly.

In fact, the announcement was made by the Insurance Corporation of B.C., which plans to raise its basic rates, which all motorists must pay, by 5.2 per cent.

The province is expecting to get $480 million in dividends from ICBC in the three years from 2014 to 2017, and another $1.23 billion from BC Hydro. Both of these massive dividend payments are on the back of ratepayers – those who have no choice but to buy electricity from BC Hydro and basic auto insurance from ICBC. This is being done so the government can balance its budget and claim to be a good

fiscal manager. Meanwhile, the rate increases planned by both corporations are far beyond inflation, and are disguised as being necessary “because of more claims due to distracted driving” (ICBC) and “by the need for capital expenditures” (BC Hydro).

No one doubts that there is a need for BC Hydro to upgrade its power network, or for ICBC to have enough money to pay for increased claims, whatever the cause.

However, claims of balanced budgets by the BC Liberals really need to be dissected.

The government is not running a surplus from its dayto-day operations. It would be in a constant deficit if it weren’t for these dividends from Crown corporations.

RAESIDE

Both of these corporations were set up to provide benefits to B.C. residents.

BC Hydro was set up by the Social Credit government in 1961 and ICBC was set up by the NDP government in 1973. Neither was set up to be an ongoing cash cow for the government.

The province does get additional revenue from the BC Lottery Corporation and the Liquor Distribution Branch, but there is a key difference.

No one has to buy a lottery ticket or go to a casino. Nor do they have to buy liquor.

Those are choices people make. They are free to choose not to use the services of those organizations.

This latest disguised tax increase is unacceptable.

Bleak summer for coastal ferry remake BC VIEWS ▼ Tom Fletcher

There was an uproar in the B.C. legislature this spring when Transportation Minister Todd Stone went ahead with $19 million in cuts to low-usage coastal ferry routes.

The plan had been laid out in detail before last year’s election. It targeted sailings where ridership was in the low teens or even single digits.

On some sailings the Transport Canada-mandated crew outnumbered the passengers.

Despite the cries of doom, most of the sailing reductions have been managed – with one glaring exception. The Discovery Coast Circle Tour route saw its ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola replaced, using the smallest vessel in the BC Ferries fleet, the open-decked Nimpkish.

This move wasn’t a direct response to low usage, a chronic issue with some of the minor route sailings along the coast. It was to avoid ordering a replacement for the Queen of Chilliwack, which sailed directly between Port Hardy and Bella Coola.

This summer the first leg was consolidated with the Northern Expedition, the vessel that replaced the doomed Queen of the North on the Inside Passage run up to Prince Rupert. At Bella Bella, after a layover of a couple of hours, the Nimpkish took over with space for 16 standard vehicles on its deck and a midnight arrival time in Bella Coola.

The direct route had been mainly used by European tourists, who sailed from the Lower Mainland to Victoria, drove the length of the Island, ferried to Bella Coola and drove through the rugged Chilcotin to Williams Lake and back down south to complete the circle tour.

The new route incorporated stops in remote outposts Ocean Falls and Shearwater, making it even longer.

Warnings came early.

“That’s where 90 per cent of the [BC Ferries] money is being lost, on the milk runs, and that’s the part they are keeping,” Petrus Rykes, a tourism operator at Anahim Lake for

40 years, said in March. “The part they’ve cancelled was at 70 per cent capacity, the second highest of all the fleet routes.”

Reports of a bad slump have come to pass. The changes meant bookings couldn’t be made until April, too late for most international travelers.

A survey by Bella Coola Valley Tourism in mid-summer found most operators losing business, from 10 to 90 per cent. A bus tour of Canadian seniors heading west from Williams Lake was terminated after 14 years. One tourism operator on Highway 20 is considering closing down.

Stone and his family took the new route themselves in early August, with the minister offering sunny reports on his blog.

Stone summed up his experience this way: “At the end of the day, my assessment is that the Nimpkish is a good

tourism product if tourists are made fully aware as to the type of service it provides. If correct expectations are set, I believe the Nimpkish can be marketed as a valuable tourism component of the Discovery Coast Circle Tour.

“The decision to do this rests squarely on the shoulders of the tourism industry and tourism operators who need to decide whether or not they want this service to work, to grow and to be viable in order to capture a share of the thousands of international tourists looking for exactly the kind of adventure the Nimpkish provides.”

Got that, Discovery Coast tourism folks? If this milk run doesn’t work next year, it will be your fault.

Heck, the Nimpkish has free snacks and drinks for your 10-hour voyage, much of it in the dark.

His lawyer said the carjacking was almost a cry for help.

Jefferson told the judge he is taking anti-depressants and anti-psychotic drugs while in prison, helping to regulate his emotions. He admits he is quick to anger. He has completed the violence prevention program and some online lifeskill training.

He has been in contact with VisionQuest Recovery Society and hopes to live in their recovery house for at least 90 days upon release, if the judge chooses to let him out.

His lawyer said the judge can and should consider his disadvantaged background and believes his client’s likelihood of re-offending is low.

“He has grown since in custody. We do know people can change,” Warren said.

A judge will decide his fate on Oct. 15.

A 44 year old construction contractor suffered multiple fractures and other serious injuries when an oncoming car made a left turn across his path, crashing into his bicycle and throwing his body to the pavement. His injuries were severe but his losses did not stop there. Applying B.C. law a Supreme Court Judge ruled the cyclist recovers only half his wage loss, treatment expenses and other damages caused by the collision.

British Columbia proudly promotes cycling. Cyclists know they are vulnerable. But do they know our law sometimes leaves the most vulnerable of our commuters less than fully protected.

As required by BC law, the contractor rode his bike as close as possible to the right side of the road. The particular road had one lane in each direction. Cars were park on the side of the road. The lane was wide enough for traffic to pass by. The cyclist was forced to ride in between traffic and the parked cars.

The Motor Vehicle Act, s. 158, allows you to pass a car on the right when there is a lane in which you are permitted to drive. By law cyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers. The ‘lane’ the cyclist is forced to use is a ‘lane’ when the cars go by the cyclist, but it effectively stops being a ‘lane’ when the bike passes cars slowing up in traffic.

When traffic backs up and a cyclist pedals alongside and passes the slowing cars, the cyclist loses the right of way. As such, if a car coming the other way turns left into the bike, as in this case, the car has the right of way. The law allows cars to pass on the right when there is a lane. This makes sense because it is efficient and keeps traffic flowing. When a cyclist is using the lane provided, should the same principles and laws apply.

The Cloverdale Spurs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, and went on to a 7-3 victory over the host team to win the bronze medal at the Baseball Canada 15U Boys National Championships Aug. 14-18 in Vaughn, Ontario.

The Spurs won four of seven games at the four-day, 11-team tournament, winning two of three playoff contests.

Austin Brown went three-for-three at the plate with a pair of doubles, a triple, four runs batted in (RBI) and two runs scored in Sunday’s bronze medal game.

Sami Shoemaker was the winning pitcher, throwing six and one-third innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out eight Vaughn batters.

After going 2-2 (won-lost) in the round robin, the Spurs began the five-team playoff with a 14-2 romp past Saskatchewan on Saturday to reach the semifinal

round.

Cloverdale got all the offense they would need in the first inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven times.

Dawson Gray was the offensive leader with three hits including a double and a triple, collecting four RBIs and scoring twice.

Wesley Moore had a pair of singles, scoring two runs and batting in two others.

Starting pitcher Liam Vulcano threw six innings to get the win. The two runs allowed, both earned, came on five hit and a pair of walks. Vulcano struck out 10 Saskatchewan batters.

In Sunday’s morning’s semifinal, the Spurs quickly fell behind 3-0, cut the difference to one run midway through the game but fell short in a 6-2 defeat.

Adam Reston singled to score Moore in the top of the fourth inning, then went home on a triple from Brown to cut the Ontario advantage to 3-2.

Ontario replied with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, and added another in the sixth.

The Spurs won the provincial championship earlier this month in Rutland.
