Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett will be speaking Jim Ogilvie’s memorial service at the Kimberley Conference and Athlete Training Centre today. Bennett says he will bringing along condolences from the Premier. “She would want me to do that,” he said. “Everybody loved Jim. The NDP loved him, the BC Liberals loved him. Partisan politics had nothing to do with it.” Bennett has many memories of the former mayor and says he was one of a kind. “I’ve never worked with anyone as dogged and determined to move his community forward,” Bennett said Thursday. “He came to see me regularly. He was always well organized, he had all the facts, and top quality documents prepared for me to take to Victoria. He made it easy for me to help him. He was never abrupt, pushy or aggressive. If I couldn’t help him at that time, I knew he’d be back. He’d wait a polite amount of time, but he’d be back.

Eighteen Japanese students from Kimberley’s sister city of Annaka, Japan visited School District No. 6 (Rocky Mountain) for a oneweek summer program from August 16 – 22, 2014. This annual program includes ESL classes in the morning and activities in the afternoon. The program maximizes the Kimberley area’s many attractions, events, and amenities. This year local students once again joined the program to make friends and speak English with the Japanese students. Some of them are hoping to visit Annaka this coming spring when the Rocky Mountain International Student Program is planning a return trip to Japan for local students at McKim Middle School and Selkirk Secondary School. BC CULTURE DAYS

Kimberley celebrates Culture Days C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

British Columbians, along with the rest of Canadians, will be celebrating Culture Days on the weekend of September 26, 27 and 28, 2014. Culture Days is a collaborative, Canada-wide volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and

engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. There is no doubt that arts and culture plays a strong role in Kimberley with a hard working and dedicated Arts Council driving many events, including Arts on the Edge in August, this year with the week-long Kaleidoscope Festival leading into it; First Saturdays; art exhibits; and a continual stream of

quality concerts and entertainment events year-round. For the days set aside specifically for culture in September, the Kimberley Arts Council will allow visitors to Centre 64 to get up close and personal with a couple of artists — to get into their heads and find out what inspires them. The two artists are from Kootenay Lake,

Leah Wilson and Dan Silakiewicz, and their exhibit will be in the gallery from Tuesday, September 2 to Sunday, September 28. On that Sunday, Leah and Dan will be at Centre 64 to talk about their art and demonstrate their painting/drawing techniques. Rumour has that Dan, also known as Howlin’ Dan, may play a few tunes as well. The session goes from 2 to 4 p.m.
