10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Fall Colour
1. Bring on the Colour. For some, fall signals the beginning of the end, but some plants are just starting to develop into their prime, including fall mums and fall pansies. They bring colour to any fall landscape, no more reason to have drab looking corners. Pansies, if planted in the fall, may even overwinter up to Zone 4, giving you blooms in the fall as well as the spring. 2. A Feast for the Eyes. While they are edible, flowering cabbages and kales are not as tasty and tender as their culinary cousins. In fact, it is not the final cabbage, but the vibrant purple, pink or white leaves that give the plants their interest as ornamentals. 3. A Visit to Asia. It’s not hard to see where Chinese Lanterns get their name. Given the scientific name of Physalis alkekengi, this plant has large, bright orange to red papery coverings over its fruit, which resemble paper lanterns. They are great in a planter or as cut “flowers” in a fall arrangement. 4. Susan Never Stops. There are at least 25 species of rudbeckia, also known as Black-Eyed Susan, all native to North America. This flower is a favourite among gardeners for many reasons, among them its high resistance to pests, droughttolerance and long bloom season that stretches from July all the way until October. 5. A Joy to be Around. ‘Autumn Joy’ - the name says it all. This is just one of the varieties of sedum that are available to be enjoyed throughout the gardening season. In the fall, however, they are spectacular. Often called autumn stonecrop, there are hundreds of sedum varieties from which to choose, many are in creeping forms that are good for rock gardens and some are taller, upright ones that are beautiful in flower beds and borders, like the ‘Autumn Joy’. 6. Masses of Fall Blooms. ‘Quickfire’ is just one of the hydrangeas that is sure to blow you away with the stunning display of blooms in the fall. Its flowers open white then turn pink, and turn an extremely dark rosy-pink in the fall. ‘Pee Gee’ is another hydrangea to turn from white to pink as the flowers age and the white, conical blooms of ‘Pinky Winky’ start turning pink at the base in the fall, giving you all shades in one cluster. 7. This Yard is Going to the Dogs. Dogwood shrubs can add a new dimension to your fall as well as your winter landscape. The ‘Red Osier’ dogwood has soft red leaves in the fall and as the weather gets cooler, the bark of this dogwood’s many stems becomes darker, turning a rich, almost wine-coloured red. The bark of the ‘Yellow Twig’ dogwood becomes bright yellow, making it a focal point in any winter yard. 8. My Yard is on Fire! The Burning Bush gets its name from the vibrant, scarlet foliage it sports in the fall. Its branches are adorned with unusual, corky “wings”, providing some great winter interest. But it is in the fall that this shrub pulls out all the stops. The leaves turn a brilliant red and they remain that colour until they drop. Small, redorange fruit further add to the spectacular effect. 9. Welcome to Canadian Fall. If you are looking to really make a statement in your yard in the fall, consider planting a maple tree. The Autumn Spire Maple, as well as its namesake, the Autumn Blaze Maple, is noted for the most stunning blazered fall colour. In the spring, it has stunning and showy red flowers that appear before the leaves open on the tree. 10. Carefree Fall Bloomer. Fall blooming crocus or colchicum is a bulb that is planted in the fall and will bloom in the fall. It produces large pink, purple or white flowers in the fall when most flowers are all finished blooming. It is virtually care free and will survive for many years without you having to do anything.

Teacher strike poised to roll into September by Jeff Nagel B.C. students are just days away from the scheduled start of

offices as both sides prepare for the strike to stretch into September. A mass rally outside the premier’s Vancouver cabinet offices is also set for Sept. 5. Veteran mediator Vince Ready is monitoring the talks and has indicated he will step into full mediation if it would be productive to do so. Both sides blame the other for a gulf between positions that’s too wide for Ready to attempt to bridge. The province says the teachers’ pay and benefits demands remain far in excess of settlements reached with other public sector unions. Teachers, meanwhile, accuse the government of insisting on preconditions to talks that would unravel the union’s past court victories over the province on the stripping of contract terms on class size and special needs support. The province is appealing the latest court ruling against it. Also gaining prominence in recent days has been an opt-out clause that the government has tabled that would allow either side

to terminate a new collective agreement if it dislikes the ultimate court outcome from either the B.C. Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court of Canada. An education mininstry spokesman said he was surprised it has become an issue now. It was disclosed in mid-June by government negotiators who pitched it as a “pragmatic and creative” way to give the union comfort it wouldn’t be handed a massive defeat in court and could therefore shelve those issues and negotiate an interim agreement while the appeal proceeds. But a BCTF spokesman said it’s the province not teachers who want an escape hatch, adding it suggests the government fears it will lose in court again and is seeking to block that outcome. He credited BCTF members on Twitter for bringing the clause into public focus. The Liberal government has promised to pay parents $40 a day for each child under 13 who misses school if the strike continues. Various organizations and businesses are scaling up their day camp and other supervised care offerings for September in anticipation of a continued school shutdown. The province also promised Tuesday to cover supported child development costs for in-school hours for special needs children now accessing services. Education Mininster Peter Fassbender on Monday reiterated the government’s position that it has no desire to legislate the teachers back to work. The lumpsum payouts to parents following the end of the strike will consume all of the $12 million a day in strike savings the government would have amassed going forward. Parents can sign up for the payments at bcparentinfo.ca, a government-created website that seeks to prepare parents for an ongoing strike this fall.

The number of reported thefts decreased significantly. But police want to ensure trail users remain vigilant. The Northstar Rails to Trails Society recently partnered with the local RCMP and placed signs in a number of the park-

The Gran Fondo is coming up
The second annual Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo is right around the corner. This race is expected to have nearly 400 cyclists participating on Sunday, September 7. These cyclists range in skill level, from novice to experienced, so if you are on the roads that day, please make sure to share the road and proceed with caution. The Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo is organized by the Cranbrook Sunrise Club as a fund raiser, with the proceeds going towards the North Star Rails To Trails (maintenance & upgrades) and the Paint The Train Hwy 3 beautification project. Of special note this year is Mathilda Klassen, of Nelson, who will be riding in the Piccolo event to celebrate her 90th birthday, along with her seven children and five grandchildren. Singer/Songwriter Barney Bentall is also on hand to sing the National Anthem and to sing a few songs at the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino. This event features a 152 kilometre ride starting at the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino. Riders then ride along Mission Road before crossing the highway to join the North Star Rails to Trails connector to Kimberley. Kimberley residents get a special thrill as the riders will be racing through the Platzl before reaching Highway 95A. The riders will then tour past Fort Steele, turning east on Bull River Road and continuing past the Fish Hatchery before making the return trip to St. Eugene.

Slugs: To the person who posted a slug in the August 15th paper about someone who wanted to stop and take a picture of a deer on the side of the road. How do you know they weren’t from an area where there aren’t many deer and they don’t get the opportunity to appreciate wildlife like we do here? Just because you take those things for granted doesn’t mean someone else shouldn’t be allowed to appreciate it and take pictures. You get over it!
Hugs: To the lady who when it started to rain the other day, came from her car with an umbrella to cover me as I was being wheeled home from the library, many thanks!
Hugs: Great big hugs to the staff at the Cranbrook Swimming pool. You all are so kind, caring and compassionate. From the staff at the front desk to the lifeguards and teachers, you are all amazing.
Slugs: To the pilots that are spreading chemicals in the sky and are making a sunny day cloudy.
Hugs: To the folks at Telus for the great service & support they provided me with my new cell phone.
Hugs: To Brian Bova for rescuing our cat who spent 4 days up a very high tree. You made 2 little boys extremely happy. You are our hero. Thank you!!!
Slugs: To all the driver’s that try to intimidate cyclists to riding on the sidewalks. Someone recently raised awareness to the risk of adult cyclists on the sidewalks. We have a right to the road as well as you do.
Hugs: To Brian From Kimberley who rescued a kitten that had been up a tree for 4 days, when no one else would.

butcher/meat cutter Let me Light up your Life
Your lighting consultant has some bright ideas!
Being a butcher isn’t just a profession; it’s an art...
Being a butcher isn’t just a profession; it’s an art. In addition to knowing all the characteristics of slaughter animals, fish and poultry, butchers must be able to quarter them into sections, know the characteristics of each of these sections as well as how to prepare and cook them. A butcher is also an artist when it comes to preparing meat, fish and poultry: de-boning, mincing meat, preparing French cuts, deli meats, fish fillets and so on. He or she must also know how to prepare brine and marinades. Some butchers specialize in wild meat, such as deer, caribou, and moose. He or she must have the necessary knowledge to advise clients on how to keep the animal’s meat intact after it has been slaughtered until it can be sectioned. Butchers must also know all the various methods of preparing wild fowl. • Master Sausage Maker • Certified Meat Cutter/Butcher Certified butchers and master sausage makers are true connoisseurs when it comes to their field of specialization and Rick has been they are top-rate advisors for clients. And since we live in a processing meat and multicultural country that has people with all types of tastes and ways of preparing meat, butchers also need to be aware making sausage of these cultural differences. The art of being a butcher means knowing how to get the most since 1984. out of each piece of meat that goes to the customer, so that it can be truly appreciated. Whether he or she works for a large or hotel chain, or in the kitchen at a large Fine Meats & restaurant construction site, we rely on our butchers to provide us with Award Winning Sausage meat, fish and poultry to make delicious meals. “Human Health Safety” is a major concern when dealing with wild game, beef, pork and lamb. The quality of the lighting helps to enhance the decoration of the rooms in your home. A lighting professional will guide you in the choice of products which will create the ambiance you’re looking for. A lighting consultant, who works in decorating boutiques, specialized lighting shops as well as in department stores, can help you choose products according to the layout of the various rooms in the home and take into account the colour of the walls, the window dressings, the arrangement of the furniture and the floor coverings. For example, a torchiere floor lamp will make your living room more warm and intimate, while the installation of a dimmer in the dining room will allow for the adjustment of the light to the desired intensity. Bedside lamps, reading lamps or table lamps with a nice shade, ceiling lights, fluorescent lights, recessed lights, halogen or incandescent bulbs, chandeliers or wall lights, your specialist will tell you all about the different types of lighting, their effect on the decor and, a not unimportant factor, their energy efficiency. Apart from the initial cost of purchase, the electricity consumption of your new appliance should also be taken into consideration. A good specialist will be able to suggest products to you which correspond to your needs and will, at the same time, help you save energy. Like all people working in retail sales, being sociable, dynamic and self-confident as well as having the capacity to listen so as to really understand customers’ needs and an ease of communication, are important assets for a lighting consultant. mortgage broker auto body repair The benefits of using a professional mortage broker
24/7 Availabilty, because accidents don’t know what time of day it is.
Finding the right home may seem like the hard part of a real estate transaction, but in reality, getting the best financing can be much harder. This is partially because we have so many options nowadays for mortgage loans and so many places to find them. Using a mortgage broker is by far the best way to go about finding and arranging the very best mortgage to suit your specific needs. Trust in a mortgage broker that knows how to package your application, what pitfalls to look out for.
Introducing something new and exciting, if you call our shop and it happens to be after hours you will be given my cell number. Call me if you’re not sure what to do.
The benefits of using a professional mortgage broker include: Reduce your stress and frustration. There are dozens of lenders from which to choose, so why not let an expert handle the application process for you? These days the forms and other data that are required for a loan application can be quite complicated, so it is wise to hand the entire process over to a professional.
The moment you hear metal crunch and glass shatter, everything in your day changes. Depending on the damage, whether a minor ‘fender bender’ or a full blown collision, if you have not pre-selected a collision autobody to fix your car, you have a bit of work ahead of you.
Fewer complications. A seasoned mortgage professional will have years of experience, and that will help him or her navigate the tricky loan application waters that lie ahead. Let a broker’s know-how work to your benefit.
Pre-selecting an autobody collision shop will save time, reduce stress and lessen aggravation at the time of an accident. There are many factors to choosing an autobody shop, and taking a moment now, while you are not stressed by the accident, or desperately trying to reschedule your day, may give you piece of mind. Pre-selecting an autobody is a form of insurance – an hour or so now, to gain information that you may never need to use. But if you do need it, you will be glad you have it.
Help you get the best deal possible. Although you may be tempted to apply for the mortgage on your own, by hiring a professional you are assured of getting the best interest rate, the best payment plan, and the best deal in general. Save you time. The most valuable of all commodities. A broker has the experience to make sure you get the best package for your individual needs.

Call me today for a mortgage consultation and let me work for you.
Choose a shop that’s clean, neat and tidy, with the proper tools and equipment to handle your vehicle. If you have a large vehicle, take it to a large truck center. If you have a light truck or car, take it to a light truck and car center.
Real personalization. Since the mortgage broker works for you (not the lenders), he or she offers you unbiased advice and helps you select the mortgage that’s absolutely right for you. You get the personal service you just cannot get from a bank. Service at no cost. Not only will a broker obtain the best mortgage rate for you, broker services cost you nothing. The AMP Advantage. The AMP designation differentiates mortgage brokers from others in the mortgage industry. It demonstrates their commitment to providing you, the borrower with the highest level of service while finding the best mortgage solution suited to your needs, explain all of your mortgage options and provide mortgage peace of mind. You’ll feel at ease when dealing with a mortgage broker who has met a higher standard of ethics and is committed to ongoing training.

With the diversity in today’s vehicles, comes the diversity of tools needed to work with them. Ensure your chosen shop has the proper equipment to work with your particular type of vehicle, whether it be a car, truck, minivan, SUV, or larger vehicle. Ask about warranties and other guarantees on pricing, scheduling and the amount of time your care will be in the shop. Keep all estimates, insurance reports and completed bills. Ensure your shop specializes in collision repair. If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to stop in or call us anytime.

Tip of the Week: I began writing weekly Horoscopes in October 1993, the year the internet went public. Writing it has provided me the privilege and opportunity to share insights, provide practical guidance and inspiration and offer a weekly glimpse illustrating that Astrology works. Astrology works because we share an intrinsic, intimate relationship with nature. We are not simply ‘in’ the world, the solar system, the universe, in nature; we are one of its many expressions and thereby essentially ‘one with it’. Yet in this time of inflated ego perception it is easy to forget this fact and the way we mistreat and abuse the environment reveals that we have intellectually separated ourselves, generally speaking. Astrology emerged during a time in history when humanity’s collective world view or paradigm was animism. Animism celebrates the perception that nature is animated, riddled with life and everything is perceived as having ‘life’ in it. Moreover, everything in existence was recognized to be inter-related to everything else, a grand web of life. The notion that ‘this’ is alive and ‘that’ is not is a modern one subject to a materialistic paradigm. The parallel principle to animism is called holism. It is upon this perception of reality that Astrology is founded. Modern Astrology has evolved to embrace the fact that we each possess free-will. While it still includes, it is no longer all about endeavors to predict the future out rightly. In this respect it celebrates the idea that our intimate relationship with nature is based on co-creation, which can also be defined as co-operation. Loosely speaking, this is the definition of destiny: to cooperate and thereby co-create. The future contains probability, but it is not certain and possibility is ever-present. Astrology features archetypes or fundamental principles that reveal our intimate and intrinsic relationship with life. It ever remains up to us to do our part to co-create our destiny in our own life and thereby contribute to the world for the sake of a wholesome and sustainable future for ourselves, humanity and our descendants. This is what responsible Astrology is all about and is my main focus with it. Mar 21 – Apr 20) You are probably busy getting some of your last summer licks in. On the other hand, you focus is turning to work and all the practical activities that late summer implies. Venus conjunct Jupiter in Leo is a perk for everyone, and perhaps especially for you. Meanwhile you passions are peaking. The question is: will they be directed to fun and loving - Venus/Jupiter, or to Virgo work? Taurus (Apr 20 – May 21) An extra creative cycle continues and is entering a new phase this week. It has and probably will still include creating beauty at home, and in a big way. Clean and clear, produce art, make love, have party or all of the above sounds like a winning line-up. Contending with some real power players or circumstances could either douse these flames or fan them. Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) A playful, social mood is lifting your spirits. Given that you have some real work to do in certain areas, you probably need all the upliftment you can get. You will soon have to direct even more time and energy to that as well. This implies ‘homework’ of some kind. For now focus to fill your tanks with inspiration from a bouquet of colourful variety. Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22) Building upon new foundations in body, mind, heart and soul is a central theme now. Tapping your plentiful reserves of creative talent is featured. Making key investments and reaching out to others who can assist you is implied. Call upon experts, professionals, wise counsel and/or angels to realize your goals. Clarify your vision and purpose for best results. Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 23) Sometimes the tide comes in bigger than usual, like these days. The overall effect may be somewhat mixed. But if you need to, look closely and you will probably see the silver lining, and possibly gold. The deep end includes some hefty ‘renovations’ close to home. These could also be of the psychological kind. Put imagination to work, ‘for’you. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) A cycle of work behind the scenes will give way to new initiatives and activities this week. The creative work begun will continue though. It is extra important that you are deliberate and disciplined and faithful that your efforts will prove worthwhile. But this may well prove easier said than done. Weave learning new skills and strategies into your work. Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) Your social life has been ignited. While the extra stimulation will continue, you may feel the need to step back for a while to rest, as well. It affords a good excuse to read or perhaps write that book. Any wholesome activity that provides quiet time will suffice. Doing so will recharge your batteries but if you do not you could feel depleted in the coming weeks and months. Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) Increasing your exposure to be seen, heard and acknowledged continues. But new strategies are needed. This will activate critical analysis towards new approaches and innovations. In fact, you may find yourself re-inventing yourself somehow. With your ambitions riding high, the time is right for a revolutionary breakthrough. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) A period of fun and adventure but perhaps also some philosophical reflection is giving way to a more practical cycle. But this is also a time of new beginnings and this may be especially true in your job or career. But it will probably take a short-term focus for now. Health considerations are also featured and some adjustments in your lifestyle may be in order. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) Sometimes a more philosophical perspective is required, like now. This implies stepping back, seeing a bigger picture, or a deeper one and it can also include looking and listening within. However you do it, some contemplation and reflection is in order. Looking back upon what has worked and what has not, is likely. Above all, set your intention to decipher what to do next. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) A fun, playful, social cycle is now taking a turn to a more serious time. You are ready to get to work or to get more results from your efforts. Some training is implied. Overall, this is an expansive time in your life. Making the most of it implies increased social involvement. Ideally you can weave or at least emphasize both. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) You are in a rather complex cycle that includes a balance of expansion and contraction. You may achieve this by concentrating your focus to increase your exposure. It may help to weave fun and adventure into your work, yet with extra emphasis on productivity. Yet, avoid frivolous games and play to win!

Open fire prohibition
Open fires remain prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, despite recent rainfall and cooler temperatures. Historically, the Southeast Fire Centre receives the least amount of precipitation in the months of August and September. Although some areas have received increased amounts of precipitation recently, it may not be sufficient to reduce wildfire risks in the long term. Specifically, the current open fire prohibition applies to: * the burning of any waste, slash or other materials * stubble or grass fires of any size over any area * the use of fireworks, sky lanterns or burning barrels of any size or description The open fire prohibition does not apply to campfires that are smaller than a halfmetre wide and a halfmetre high, or to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. The Wildfire Management Branch investigates all reports of smoke, including those involving prohibited burning activities. Human-caused wildfires can divert critical resources and crews from responding to naturally occurring wildfires. Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone. Visit www. bcwildfire.ca.

driveway Liked equally well whether it’s new or almost new By Zack Spencer
The Kia Soul has been on my recommendation list ever since it came out in 2010. For those looking for something bigger than a compact car but not as large or expensive as a compact SUV, it works. The original Soul was one

of the first vehicles to receive Kia’s new design architecture. That bold, fun attitude and design has been improved in for 2014, taking the best of the old model and updating it to a whole other level. The 2014 Soul recently won the Red Dot Design Award, kind of like the Academy Awards for car design and it also took home the Best Family Car under $30,000 from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). So, it is already off to a good start in its first year of production and should be considered by anyone looking at a compact car replacement. Looks
What is the Soul and how does it compare to the rest of the market? Well, it falls
in size between a compact hatchback car and a small SUV, a true crossover. The two main rivals for this car are the Nissan Cube and Scion XB, but compared to those cars this is a much more polished effort in design and content. The body has been updated with slightly larger

dimensions in width and length but the roof has been dropped by a centimeter. The front air intake is much bigger and the headlights look more aggressive. The back has a large black section around the rear bumper to help lift the eye, where the older car had a long, slightly droopy back end. Prices range from $16,995 all the way to $26,995 for the model scene here. That might sound like a lot but this top SX Luxury trim is packed with goodies that would cost a lot more on a compact SUV. It has polished alloy wheels, HID headlamps and LED tail lamps, a huge panoramic sunroof and automatic folding outside mirrors. Inside
What continues to amaze me is just what is offered in a compact vehicle and Kia, in particular, jams more stuff in than anyone else. This top model has heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, leather seats, a big 8-inch navigation screen with backup camera, satellite radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, power moon roof and more. Now most buyers will shop in the middle EX trim and it starts at $20,895 also well equipped. One of the main reasons for the popularity of the Soul is the ease of use, meaning older buyers can get into the car thanks to the big doors and slightly higher seats, when compared
with a compact car. The back seat is very roomy and has a flat floor for easy access for children. The cargo rear isn’t as big as a compact SUV but for a city runabout it does a great job because there is storage under the floor and the seats fold for more room. Drive
Kia has a two-engine approach to the Soul. The base model gets a 130hp 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and all other trim levels get a larger 2.0L engine with 164hp. The same is true with the transmission; the base has a standard 6-speed manual transmission and all others get a 6-speed auto. The larger 2.0L engine was introduced into the last model but now it has the benefit of an updated chassis to get the most out of the Soul in terms of handling. The body has been strengthened and attention has been placed on noise and vibration from the engine and suspension. This all comes together to make a great city car that can dash in and out of traffic with ease and lets the passengers relax and enjoy the cars amenities. One of the reasons I think this is an alternative to a small SUV is the high seating position, great outward visibility and solid fuel economy, using 8.5L/100km in the city and 6.6L on the highway. The Soul would be just fine in the winter if driven sensibly and equipped with proper winter tires. Not everyone needs all wheel drive; front wheel drive is just fine. Verdict

The Soul is already an award winner and has a dedicated buyer base. In fact, the Soul also won the 2014 ALG Residual Value Award for the subcompact utility class. This means that, the company, ALG believes this Soul will hold its value better than the competition. Yes, this class is small but there is comfort in knowing the Soul isn’t just liked by the initial buyer but by the used car buyer too. If you are in the market for a compact hatchback or small SUV, do yourself a favour and try the Soul. My fully loaded tester was about the same price as a most base model compact SUVs but this runabout has attitude to spare. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca
