Rescue: Dog, owner camped at Bedwell Lake Continued from Pg. 1

rescue could proceed while exposing the rescuers to the least amount of risk, said Tyler Abbot, a search and rescue manager with CRSAR. CRSAR member Jamie Turko flew into the park with E&B Helicopters and successfully located the dog and owner in a camp at Bedwell Lake.

“He wouldn’t of been able to make it back out to their vehicle,” Turko

said via Facebook. “We were able to land the

helicopter about a eightminute hike to him but

the pack out was, of course, a little longer with him over my shoulders.”

Turko praised E&B Helicopters’ contribution.

“A big thank-you to E&B Helicopters for donating the pilot’s time and fuel to rescue Brody and I was happy to put all of my training to use for man’s best friend,” he said.

“No man’s best friend gets left behind.”

Harper, meanwhile, said he’s hoping for “a miracle” but isn’t sure teachers are in a position to welcome kids back Sept. 2.

“It seems to me the likelihood of teachers being able to accept students Sept. 2 – well, we’re on thin ice here,” Harper said.

He said teachers typically put in between five and 10 sessions throughout the summer preparing their classrooms for the fall – all work that

teachers have not been able to do.

There’s also the issue of having to work out class schedules for high school students, assign lockers and distribute text books.

“If there was a settlement today, teachers would have to go in tomorrow and work through the weekend and the holiday Monday,” Harper said.

“It would be a miracle to open Sept. 2 but we would try. Everybody needs to get the schools open.”

Salmon have will workaround Willow Creek barrier with new weir

A way around a barrier to fish passage on Willow Creek began this week.

Erosion to the creek bed near Highway 19A has exposed three pipes that have become a potential barrier to fish passage. Two of the pipes are the city’s and one pipe belongs to Telus. The city and Telus have worked together to develop a plan to address the barrier, and applications under the provincial Water Act and the federal DepartAlistAir tAylor/the Mirror ment of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) were Workers sandbag Willow Creek to allow for removal of water and any fish before construction approved. of a fish weir gets underway.

The project was expected to take approximately one week.

Since relocating the Telus infrastructure is cost prohibitive and removal of the abandoned concrete-encased sewer was anticipated to cause more problems for fish in the creek, new weirs are being built to prevent erosion and help the fish travel past this

area.

“Removing the barrier to fish passage is the priority,” Ron Neufeld, deputy city manager and general manager of operations for the City of Campbell River, said in a press release.

“Rather than removing the pipe, constructing two weirs in the creek will create pools to allow the fish to travel over the Telus pipe and prevent future erosion in the creek.”

The city has worked closely with DFO, Greenways Land Trust, and the Willow Creek Streamkeepers to ensure that the design and construction provide the best available option.

The work is being done by Upland Contracting. Before work began, the affected section of creek was isolated and any fish within that area will be relocated outside of the construction zone.

The creek will then be drained so that work can

occur in dry conditions.

Equipment needed for the work will access the creek from the Ken Forde boat ramp and the beach. Some sandy material will need to removed from the creek bed so that rock being used to build the weirs can be placed into the streambed.

The sandy material may be temporarily placed beside the Ken Forde boat ramp at the base of the rip rap.

Some of sand is expected to migrate north along the shore during winter weather, and any material remaining at this location in 2015 will be removed during the annual maintenance period and used for beach restoration.

Environmental monitoring for the project will be done by Mainstream Biological Consulting to ensure that best management practices are in place while the work is underway.

pirit Square at the Tyee Plaza has a new aesthetic thanks to Daybreak Rotary, the Campbell River Arts Council and Epic Design Studio.

“Since the square was first put in, something was lacking,” said Spirit Square manager Jim Creighton at the unveiling of the new banners which now fly on the uprights around the venue. “But right now, we’re happy with the way it looks. It’s just fantastic.”

Creighton said he was approached by Daybreak Rotary asking if they could contribute anything to the locale, and he immediately thought, “Let’s see if we can get some banners flying,” he said.

The groups set out to find an artist, and with help from the Campbell River Arts Council, remembered Alex Witcombe’s design from the wrap proposals when the designs were chosen for the PRV boxes around the city.

Once the design was chosen, Epic Design Studio, who had produced the previously installed banners in the square, was tasked with finding a material to create them as well as produce and install the work.

End to strike due next week The provincial government and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation have an assignment and it’s due next week: resolve this labour dispute.

We kind of understand that there wasn’t an urgency to spend these last couple of months at the bargaining table, when summer holidays beckoned and back to school seemed a long way away. But somewhere along the line, both sides should have noticed that there was a deadline approaching. They should have circled the day after Labour Day in their homework planners and realized that’s when they have to submit their work to us – B.C. taxpayers and families – or risk a failing grade.

As it stands right now, the government and the teachers should not be proud of the work they’re expected to hand in on Tuesday. Sure, they can spin their stubbornness as resolve and good intentions. They can throw us $40 a day, something shiny to distract us from what we really want.

This Sept. 2 deadline matters to British Columbians.

Our kids need to go to school, not just for an education, not just for a place to go, but for both those reasons and a million others. We knew school was going to be out for summer; we know school isn’t going to be out forever. It should be in session, or else both sides get an F for effort.

Cops ready to roll for annual Cops for Cancer

More than 100 police officers and emergency services personnel will slip into spandex, strap on their helmets and hit the road next month as part of the the annual Cops for Cancer cycling tours to raise awareness and money for pediatric cancer research.

A total of 107 cyclists will participate in four different tours that will visit businesses and schools from Fort St. John in the province’s north to the southernmost reaches of Vancouver Island.

Two weeks ago was the inaugural Rockin’ the Island music festival in Campbellton, and the turn out was... well, let’s call it underwhelming.

I was covering the event for this fine publication, and as such, I came and went numerous times throughout the day for photos of the musicians, and I would have liked to get some crowd shots, as well. Unfortunately, there was no crowd.

Those few in attendance seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, but the field was mostly empty. If I were to hazard a guess, I’d say there were more musicians, vendors, and support staff (including security) on the grounds than there were paying patrons.

This is why we can’t have nice things, Campbell River.

“There’s nothing to do,” people moan, but when someone tries to provide an experience like 10 bands playing in one place on the same day, nobody shows up to it.

Sure, I heard the complaints about the price, and the location, and the condemnations of, “I don’t know any of these bands,” all over various social media platforms and around the community, so I will address these things briefly one by one.

In regards to the price complaints, I ask the following: What is musicianship worth? We, as a society, need to decide where we put out values, and I, for one, consider the arts an integral part of that society.

Granted, $70 per (adult) ticket was probably a bit steep for a first run at it,

all things considered. On the other hand, when you put it in context, sometimes I pay close to $20 to go see a two-hour movie, and that money goes to a multinational cinema conglomerate and a bunch of already-wealthy people who don’t care about me or where I live, so paying $70 for 12 hours of live music that supports my local community doesn’t really seem like that bad an entertainment investment.

In regards to the location, I ask the following: Where would you have chosen to put a massive stage and sound system pumping out those kind of decibels?

Where would you put 1,000 or more people enjoying themselves and the infrastructure to support them?

Nunn’s Creek Park and/or the Willow Point Sportsplex aren’t about to have

people gallivanting all over their baseball diamonds, I don’t think. Also, the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association are the ones who stepped up to the plate to put it on, shouldn’t they get to host it?

In regards to the, “I don’t know any of these bands,” complaint, I ask the following: How would you approach your favourite internationally recognized band to play a festival in Campbell River the first year you put it on?

I’m sorry, but you just aren’t going to woo bands like Pearl Jam, U2, or even Arcade Fire or the Tragically Hip to headline your event until you have a track record built up and some name recognition.

Also, by not attending, you’ve likely ensured that you won’t know the bands

In addition to the Tour de Valley, the Tour de Rock will cover Vancouver Island, the Tour de North will travel through northern British Columbia from Prince George to Prince Rupert (with a stop in Kitimat), and the Tour de Coast will journey around Greater Vancouver and up to Powell River and Pemberton.

While the rides begin in September, the cyclists are already in the midst of their fundraising and training efforts. On Sunday, for example, the Tour de Valley riders embarked on a 160-kilometre ride beginning and ending in Abbotsford.

“All Cops for Cancer riders take part in rigorous training – they need to learn how to pace themselves and ride in a peloton,” says Allan Mugford, Fraser Valley regional director for the Canadian Cancer Society.

“But what they can never prepare for is the emotional impact of seeing a child with cancer and the toll it takes on their entire family.”

The Cops for Cancer campaign runs through September, with money raised going to fund leading edge cancer research and support programs operated by the Canadian Cancer Society like Camp Goodtimes.

Plans for a new residential development near the Campbell River Estuary went unopposed during a public hearing Tuesday night.

The owner of the property wants to downzone his 1.06 hectare lot in order to build eight duplexes and two single family homes, for an 18

strata lot development.

The property is currently zoned to accommodate a multi-residential complex such as apartment buildings or condos.

K at h l e e n Wi l k e r, the city’s planner, said the applicant altered his plans for the property “due to changes in the housing market in Campbell River.”

The site is a vacant,

well-maintained open field area within a gated community and is made up of three separate parcels. The main entrance to the property is off of Alice Road which is off Coulter Road behind the Strathcona Toyota and Campbell River Hyundai dealerships.

Wilker said an environmental assessment has been provided to address the impact of construction on the environment.

“Any recommenda-

tions for the mitigation of the impacts will be addressed at the time of the review and consideration of the development permit,” Wilker said.

But first, the project’s re-zoning application, which passed through Tuesday’s public hearing, will have to be given third reading and adopted by city council.

If that is approved, the developer will have to apply for a development permit which will trigger the streamside development requirements.

Wilker said overall the project fits in well with the north Campbell River neighbourhood and is consistent with the existing character of the area.

“The development of this site will not likely have any significant adverse impacts on neighbouring properties and is consistent with the OCP’s (official community plan) direction for sensitive in-fill projects within existing neighbourhoods, subject to appropriate design,” Wilker said.

City council has decided to have another look at funding the renovation of a hazardous viewing platform at Dick Murphy Park.

But when the item appeared on the agenda for council’s August 12 regular meeting, Mayor Jakeway changed his mind and voted against moving forward with the renovations based on concerns about the cost.

Adams agreed that Jakeway’s concerns were valid.

“It’s just a matter of what’s the best bang for the buck, so to speak, whether it’s to remove the platform or re-build it,” Adams said.

“But I’m looking for staff to have a sober second look at this as to how to mitigate some of the expenses.

staff come back to council with a report on the projected costs to renovate, re-build or remove the platform.

Coun. Larry Samson, who brought the issue forward last month after noticing the platform’s poor condition, agreed with Adams that further avenues should be investigated.

“I think…that maybe we can do better and I understand that there may be some serious structural needs that need to be looked at,” Samson said.

An inspection of the platform has found the support timbers are in poor condition and the platform is deteriorating.

It’s been cordoned off with caution tape for the past couple of months for fears the platform could collapse if too many people were to use it at the same time.

Adams said there’s no way the city can leave the platform in the shape that it’s in.

“I appreciate councillor Samson’s initiative in bringing it forward because it is a safety liability issue for the city in the condition that it stands in right now,” Adams said.

Samson said he’s eager for staff to come back with its recommendations but added that he would not support removing the platform.

“I look forward to the staff report, if anything, we want to make it better than before,” Samson said. “I’ll say up front, I’m against taking it down.”

A Look Back

THE HISTORY OF THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA

Dam makes Campbell River a powerful place Thelma SilkenS MUSEUM AT CAMPBELL RIVER

O

n Dec. 15, 1947, British Columbia Premier John Hart officially turned the switch to begin delivery of power from the new John Hart Dam situated on the Campbell River to residents of the Campbell River region.

As a 1997 newspaper article stated, that was the day the lights stopped flickering for area residents.

Before this development introduced 60-cycle power, the town depended on an overloaded 25-cycle supply from Vancouver Island Utilities, one of several small companies which bought power wholesale from the Puntledge River system to the south.

The Puntledge provided most of its power to the coal mining operations of Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd. The project of harnessing power from the Campbell River water system began in 1945, soon after the BC Power Commission (later BC Hydro) was established to make electricity available for rural users and industries throughout the province.

The John Hart Dam was the first of three phases in a huge hydroelectric project that would eventually include three storage dams, three generating stations and three river diversions.

During the construction project, up to 450 men worked on the dam and power plant.

The largest earth-moving job of the project was excavation

for the 6,000 foot long woodstave pipelines built to carry water from the dam to the generating station.

An engineer’s report from the time stated that enough Douglas fir lumber to build 40 houses went into the woodstave pipe. It was made of 4-inch planks, dressed down, with tongues and grooves on the sides and ends.

When the project began, just two years after the end of World War II, housing was in very short supply; a supply that was only beginning to catch up with demand.

Housing and manufacture of automobiles, electrical appliances, furniture etc. had been put on hold while labour was diverted to the war effort.

To provide housing for its employees, the BC Power Commission built ten homes.

The location of the homes was known as the John Hart Townsite; however, residents

nicknamed it “Hydro Hollow.”

An advantageous place for young families, with space for children to grow, it was unique in its existence.

Many felt that it was a good experience to live in such a small community.

After the project was completed, the houses were eventually sold and moved to other areas of Campbell River and vicinity, and Hydro Hollows became just a fond memory.

The hydroelectric power project left a last legacy in the Campbell River region.

It was the impetus for dramatic growth throughout the 1950s, especially when a pulp mill was constructed at Duncan Bay in 1952.

The village that was Campbell River bloomed into a town, and eventually became a city.

The Museum at Campbell

River has created a new permanent exhibit in partnership with BC Hydro that tells the story of the building of the dams and how they significantly altered the Campbell River watershed, that has its start at Buttle Lake in Strathcona Provincial Park.

The exhibit includes a state of the art touch screen that can be tapped to access interviews and archival photos related to the construction of the dams.

When a 60th Birthday Party was being planned by friends of Joan Bakker it was her wish to not receive any gifts. Bakker requested that in lieu of presents, friends could donate to the Campbell River Hospice Society in her name. As a result, donations made to the society on Bakker’s behalf amounted to $2,165. “I was ecstatic when I found out how much was donated to Hospice,” said Bakker. “I would like to send out a special thank you to Susan St. Paul for cooking up a feast and hosting my 60th Birthday Bash. Spend September in Strathcona Strathcona Wilderness Institute (SWI) Society is offering several September programs in Strathcona Park thanks to volunteer guides.

The Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre, managed by SWI, at the Paradise Meadows trailhead adjacent to Mt. Washington’s Raven Lodge, is the centre for SWI programs and is open almost every day for Park and trail information.

On Saturday Sept. 6, join Mary Finnan for a guided hike around the Kwai Lake Loop, an eight-hour, 16 km

long hike. Registration is limited to 12 people contact coordinator@ strathconapark.org. No pets please on this outing which will start at 8 a.m. from the Wilderness Centre.

On Sunday Sept. 7 starting at 1 p.m., expert naturalist Alison Maingon will guide a Mushroom ID Hike around the Lake Helen Mackenzie Loop. “I will give a short intro to mushrooms outside the Centre then set out to Battleship Lake, “ says Alison. “The forested slopes above Paradise Meadows have

a wealth of fall mushrooms potentially visible along the trails to Battleship Lake and around to Helen McKenziefor example the Gypsy mushroom (Rozerites caperatus) or the Woolly chanterelle ( Gomphus kauffmanii).” The round trip is about 8.5 km and will take about 3 hours including stops.

The next weekend, a choice of two hikes are offered. On Saturday Sept. 13, join SWI volunteer Jana Tomanek for a dog-friendly Nature Hike to Lady Lake. Preregister at coordina-

tor@strathconapark. org for this 11 km, 5 hr. slowly-paced hike which will start at 9 a.m. from the Wilderness Centre.

Leashes are required for pets in this area, and well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

Also on September 13 starting at 10 a.m. Marie Maccagno of the Comox District Mountaineering Club will guide a hike to Divers Lake. Meet at the Centre for this 11 km, moderate hike which should take about 5 hours. Pre-register at coordinator@strathconapark.org.

Lady Lake nature hike is set for Sept. 13.

It’s our 22nd annual “Show ‘n’ Shine”. We have a great day planned for the participants and spectators alike. We expect many new entries… an incredible line up of antiques, hot rods, muscle cars, race cars, sports cars and exotics… definitely something for ev– Jim Johnson eryone. Campbell River has an abundance of really cool cars, and often the only time we really get to see them is at this show. Couple this with the participants who travel from far and wide to show there beautiful pieces of rolling art while experiencing our awesome scenery, and you have a weekend to remember.

We really want to encourage the younger crowd to participate, so a special “Young Guns” trophy will be awarded to an entry owned by someone under 30 years of age.

Our Saturday evening cruise is on again, but starts at 7:00 pm this year. See the details in this pullout. Set up your lawn chairs and watch the cars cruise by. Our participants love to cruise and it gives us a chance to show off our great city to our visitors.

Once again we had generous support from the local business community. The Downtown BIA has organized a shopping tour for our participants. Campbell River businesses also donate “door prizes” that are given to participants. Room for parking all these neat machines is courtesy the City of Campbell River, for Shopper’s Row and Spirit Square, and Tyee Plaza for their parking area.

We’ll start at 7pm from the A&W at Discovery Harbour, we’ll go north toward Painter’s Lodge, but turn on Discovery Drive, then to Orange Point Road, and head south on the Island Highway. We’ll take a left on 16th Ave, to Shoppers Row and continue south on 19A to Ericson.

Then we take Nelson to Penfield, Holm to Galerno, and right on Oceanview. This leads us to Ash and Carnegie, then down South Murphy to 1st Ave, up to Alder and north back to Downtown.

Message from the president of the North Island Cruisers Thank you to all participants, vendors, the visiting public and members of the North Island Cruisers for your support of our Annual Show ‘n’ Shine in Campbell River.

The ‘Cruisers’ have organized this show for the last 22 years and the event has been a showcase for the Club and it illustrates our impact in the community. Since 1992 when the original 5 members incorporated a ‘not for profit society’, the Club has been very active in Campbell River.

Here are the purposes of our society as defined in our Constitution: • To promote and encourage the restoration, modification and upgrading of motor vehicles with a primary focus on vehicles thirty (30) years old or older, but also including sports cars, muscle cars, race cars, exotics and special interest vehicles.

• To share knowledge of the members of the Society on the area of restoring, modifying and upgrading of motor vehicles.

• To hold meetings and arrange for social events, competitions and rod runs for its members and others sharing the same interests.

• To arrange for insurance, periodicals and publicity for the benefit of its members and to promote motor vehicle safety and courtesy and foster public understanding of its objectives.

dave’s 1952 Chevrolet sports coupe I found this car for sale in Campbell River in 2011. It is a Canadian built car and still has the original engine with matching numbers. Because of the matching numbers, during the Graffiti Bash in Courtenay earlier this year, I was awarded a plaque for “Best Engine”.

My connection to this car is that I had a 1951 Chev when I was in High School and have many great memories.

I have rewired the electrical system, rebuilt the engine and the transmission. The front suspension and steering gear have been rebuilt and a new clutch has been installed.

This year the upholstery has been updated. The body work and paint were already done when I bought the car. I had the hood ornament and emblems chromed and installed.

All of this was done with a lot of help from my friends. The car now has collector plates and runs great.

Comox Valley car show, earlier this month, awarded a plaque for 2nd place stock 1948 to 1959. This year North Island Cruisers of Campbell River has chosen the car to be featured on our T-shirts that will be available at the car show on Sunday, August 31, 2014.

Ralph’s 1927 T I joined the NIC about 15 years ago for several reasons… fun with Top Picks fabricating and driving old cars, the camaraderie with socializing Trophy with like minded people and the chance to do some charitable things after I retired. I wanted to build an open car in the style of 1950 Club Participation to 1960 using the old flatheads of the 40’s for power, [ I remember when these were the hot set up]. The body is a 1927 Ford model T entrants will go roadster found on a couple of sawhorses 12 years ago in Coombs. The home with one of these fenders are 1930 Ford reproductions bought at a swap meet. I made fantastic trophies crafted the running boards to fit the finished assembly. The engine came out of a 1953 Ford that was rusting away in Black Creek. The frame rails by one of our members! and front crossmember are a TCI item for a 1929 to 30 Model “A” Ford. The Jaguar rear end came from an upside down XJ6 in Boris’ Junkyard in Port Hardy. I chose a top-loader transmission from 68 to 72 Mustang. All of the work, except for the paint and engine machine work, I’ve done at home with the assistance of my wife Jan. The roll bar is functional. The carburated engine makes around 175-180 horsepower and gets 20 miles per gallon and is dead reliable. The idea was to build an old school rod on a budget and have fun driving it.

After running the original flathead for several years, I had a chance to buy a flathead block used in the logging or sawmill industry back in 50s and 60s. It was in great shape internally and became the basis for the next engine for my 27”T”. High Performance engines in Vancouver bored and stroked it to 284 cubic inches, and installed steel main bearing caps and Chevrolet stainless valves. Progressive Diesel in Port McNeill provided a timed out 471 GMC blower from an old skidder. Luke’s Custom and Machine in North Vancouver machined the blower and provided the manifold and drive system. After several years of fooling around and fitting parts and pieces I got it together and running in April 2014. What we now have is a supercharged flathead making around 300 hp, getting 20 miles per gal [if driven gently] and is very user friendly. This is much like it was done back in the 50s and 60s in Southern California for racing on the dry lakes. However with modern parts and electronics to control how it runs and modern fasteners to hold it all together, this 65 year old engine runs reliably and produces modern horsepower with respectable fuel economy.

They were originally used in competition in a Top Alcohol drag racing car making around 3000 horsepower.

After a specific number of runs at that level the assemblies are replaced with new items due to internal fatigue- timed out as it were before breakdown.

Randy Carlson in our club has access to these and he and I collaborated again this year on the style and finish.

It kind of fits the hot rod profile for awards.

D

espite how it felt at the time, losing their docks a few years back may have been the best thing that could have happened to the Campbell River Tyee Club.

That’s because they now have a new wharf that is setting the standard for dock upgrades and environmental compliance.

With the new wharf facility completed, their membership numbers expanding (they have spots available for 50 boats and 70 people are on the wait list for one) and salmon spawning ground improvements on their way, the future looks brighter than ever for the club.

“Initially it was a five or six year plan to replace [the docks],” said Floyd Ross, vice president of the board of directors of the club, “and we were going to do bits and pieces as we

could afford it.”

However, once the contractor on the operation got started on the first stage, “he just wanted to get it done, so he floated us financially in order to finish it,” Ross said, so the organization went to work on how to pay him back as soon as possible.

That led to the applications for various grants and fundraising efforts. One of those applications came back recently with funding for soon-to-be-implemented eelgrass transplantation to repair the riverbed that was damaged by the old dock.

That grant will complete the rebuild and hopefully ensure the viability of the organization for years to come, by promoting healthy salmon stocks into the future.

“It clogs up and bogs down our motors. But it’s really important for the fish, so we have to do what we can, because

it’s the right thing to do. It’s not just about us, it’s about those who come after us, and doing what’s best for the place we live and want to con-

tinue enjoying.”

The eelgrass transplantation is the final stage in the estuary cleanup being done by the club.

Their old docks were wooden and didn’t allow light through to reach the riverbed.

Their opaque nature and the fact that they also came to rest on the riverbed during low tide was destructive to the plant life, which couldn’t recover naturally.

By selectively transplanting from other areas of the river to those depleted spots, they can initiate a process of natural recovery.

The eelgrass transplanting is scheduled to happen in November, when the operation will have minimal impact on salmon stocks and other environmental conditions.

The new wharf is constructed to allow light through and sits above the riverbed to avoid any future need for replanting.

T

he owners of Campbell River’s bowling alley have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on renovations and things are just about ready to roll.

“Both the 10-pin and the five-pin lanes have been refurbished with synthetic laminate,” said CR Bowling marketing coordinator Barrie Davidson.

The old flooring on the bowling lanes must have been original and around 50 years old, Davidson said.

“They’re no longer repairable,” he said.

A company from Ottawa, Striker Bowling, was brought in to renovate the lanes which were made of rock maple and pine timber.

But wood lanes are never used any more, they tend to be labour intensive, requiring resurfacing every three

or four years.

“That’s something that will be in the past,” Davidson said.

“The new lanes are an extremely dense composite” that should last 20 years.

The result is a a very different look to the old bowling alley. Gone are all the oil stained lanes that will perform better. The new lanes go beyond competition standards. Davidson said competition standards require lanes

Davidson said the sport goes through its highs and lows of popularity and the old bowling lanes were in bad need of an upgrade.

For years it was known as Crystal Lanes but that name has not been used for a few years now.

Davidson said there are generally two different categories of users.

League bowling has always been strong and will continue to be catered to at CR Bowling but in recent years, the family entertainment centre (FEC) concept has come to the fore with a broader bowling experience incorporating food, lights and music.

The Rock ‘N’ Bowl nights of recent years is an example of that. CR Bowling’s intention is to be a hybrid bowling centre catering to both league play and the FEC

concept.

Flashing lights and glowing lanes have been installed.

“We’re moving to make bowling way more appealing,” Davidson said.

Of course, like every recreational activity, bowling has to compete with home entertainment through television, video and computers.

The challenge is to prompt everybody to get out of the house once in a while and take in some bowling.

CR Bowling is also leaning heavily into focusing on customer service, he said. They’ve renovated everything from the bathrooms to the front door.

The new-look CR Bowling will open on Sept. 15 and league play will restart Sept.

22. There’s still space in league play for players.

The city’s Enterprise Centre could be in for an overhaul – but that decision won’t be up to city council.

Council, at its Tuesday meeting, distanced itself from any plans to add mini workstations for small or start-up businesses.

“This isn’t really something for council to make a determination of, this is an initiative of Rivercorp, InFilm, Creative Industries, the Chamber, Community Futures and all of the people in the Enterprise Centre,” Adams said.

A report from city staff outlining options for workspaces, or business incubation cells, that would add 2,823 square feet of office space to the Enterprise Centre was before council Tuesday evening.

Staff estimated the cost of the entire project, which was divided up into four stages, to be between $243,665 and $290,665.

Adams said that if the groups working out of the Enterprise Centre want to pursue the incubation stations, the onus would be on those parties to come up with the funding.

“This report provides

some groundwork for the parties that be to be able to carry forward and I would say it’s in their court,” Adams said. “I think it’s up to those parties, to now that they’ve got some dollar amounts, to see what’s possible.”

Elle Brovold, the city’s property manager, outlined a plan that includes installing seven to nine standalone work spaces and one private office as part of stage one, with stage two providing for a women’s cell block with three private offices, one common space and a washroom. Stage three would involve a men’s cell block with nine standalone offices,

one common meeting area, a storage room and a washroom while stage four would involve repurposing the Enterprise Centre’s garage into a large meeting room.

Coun. Larry Samson questioned whether or not there’s funding available to do such a project.

Adams said that the city of Nanaimo recently received a grant from Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICE-T), plus the federal government is making grant funding available for small business incubation innovation centres.

“There is funding other than city tax revenue,” Adams said.

Campfire ban lifted by city, coastal fire centre The campfire ban covering Vancouver Island has been lifted just in time for the Labour Day weekend.

The Coastal Fire Centre rescinded its fire restrictions at noon yesterday in light of cooler temperatures and rain in the short-term weather forecast. That means campfires, no larger than a half-metre high

by a half-metre wide, are once again permitted in the region’s B.C. Parks, Crown lands and private lands, however, anyone who lights a campfire must have a shovel or at least eight litres of water on hand to fully extinguish it.

The city of Campbell River followed the province’s lead and lifted its own municipal campfire

ban, effective yesterday afternoon. Within the city, campfires must be no larger than 60 centimetres (24 inches) wide and beach fires should be below the high tide line and away from other driftwood. Both recreational and beach fires must also be under the supervision of an adult with a bucket or hose nearby to ensure all fires

While recreational fires are allowed, the Coastal Fire Centre continues to ban small backyard burning piles as well as fireworks, sky lanterns and burning barrels of any size. End of Life health services on Vancouver Island are improving ... slowly MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Coordination between the Province, regional health authorities, various hospice societies, and communities is helping improve the availability and quality of end of life services for Vancouver Island residents.

A priorities update report from Island Health (formerly the Vancouver Island Health Authority) regarding Island Health’s End of Life (EOL) program was released in June, which analyzes and makes recommendations on data regarding EOL care in the region.

“Unfortunately, many people who are dying may end up in acute care during the last weeks of life when that is neither their care preference, nor their need,” according to the report, and it reevaluates the program’s priorities to mitigate that fact.

Based on the report’s findings, 45 per cent of the approximately 6,000 people per year who die on Vancouver Island of natural causes die in an acute care location, such as a hospital, compared to 27 per cent who end their lives in “Residential Services,” and 19 per cent who die at home, “with

support from Home and Community Care.”

Seven per cent pass away in a palliative care facility or hospice.

“The ability to deliver compassionate, timely and appropriate services to patients with a variety of medical needs and personal preferences is a key priority for Island Health,” said Dr. Leah MacDonald, medical director for Island Health’s EOL program. “We are extremely pleased to be partnering with community organizations including hospice societies, physicians and other clinical experts to expand and improve our end-of-life care services.”

T h e “p opu l at i on based” EOL system being adapted by Island Health is modelled on an Australian framework, which, according to the report, “is an internationally recognized framework for EOL care that is designed to ensure that services are directed to support the right patient at the right time,” through a comprehensive and collaborative approach.

This means engaging primary care (physicians), enhanced care (palliative physician consultants and coordina-

tors), and complex care (hospices and educational resource providers, planners, etc.) aspects of the system cooperatively.

The framework is designed for ease of mobility between these services, as well as having them integrated within the health care network more efficiently. The question on a number of people’s mind’s, however, surrounds the lack of bed-space for those in palliative care situations, which is one of the reasons why large percentages of the population are dying in acute care facilities when they die of natural causes, despite that not being their wish.

In September of 2006, the B.C. government launched a public health discussion to have British Columbians “take an active role in the discussion and help shape the future of our public health system.” The comments cited in the official report of that engagement make it clear that British Columbians want more options for EOL care.

“We end up shutting people into acute care and are missing an opportunity for people to come into an environment that is more

responsive and appropriate for end-of-life,” and, “people are dying in hospitals because they do not have options/services available,” are representative of the feelings of the public, according to the report.

The June 2014 report indicates that it is the goal of Island Health to double the number of hospice beds available by 2020, in response to the public’s concerns.

“Island Health recognizes each community’s desire for hospice beds,” the report says. “We also recognize that most communities would like to see these beds open faster than what the strategy outlines.”

Island Health currently has 32 hospice beds, none of which are in Campbell River, which the new report says will be receiving three of the 32 projected additional beds. These three beds will be integrated into the health care system sometime in 2016-17, according to the projections.

All who knew Anita will always remember her for her kindness, generous giving soul, love of animals (Dusty), and wintering in Yuma.

Our beautiful mom was predeceased by her parents Otto (1963) and Helene (1991), brothers Gordon (1942) and Leonard (2013) and step-son Jamie Stowell (2003). Anita will be forever loved and missed by family and friends.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and friend.

Barbara Joyce Anaka was born on June 26, 29, 1927 in Collettsville, BC and passed away on August 21, 2014 in Campbell River. She was predeceased by her daughter Sharon in 1947 and by her husband Harry in 2006.

Survived by her loving children Elaine James (Trev), Donna McIraith (Gil), Linda Chaisson (Garth), Michael Anaka (Judy), Barb O'Shea (Rob), 13 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.

Spending her childhood in Merritt, BC, she was the 7th of 9 children born to John and Hannah Ovington. She met the love of her life and future husband Harry in Merritt.

They were married on June 16, 1944 in Cumberland, BC and they enjoyed 63 years together. Settling in Campbell River, they built a beautiful home at Stories Beach, where they raised their family. Over the years, they also travelled extensively and in later years, they enjoyed spending their winters in Yuma, Arizona.

Barb loved gardening, singing, dancing, camping, fishing, and get togethers with family. She will be remembered and loved for her kind, loving heart, her beautiful smile, her devotion to family and her joy of life.

Our family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Brian Carswell for his years of care and friendship. We would also like to thank the staff of Yucalta Lodge for their excellent care.

Please join us in celebrating and remembering at the Baptist Church Chapel on Dogwood Street on September 6 at 2:00p.m.

Night of firsts, bumper-to-bumper battles at Speedway

A season high 13 I.M.C.A Modifieds took to the track on Saturday at Saratoga Speedway.

Joining the action on Saturday was the Old Timers, Dwarf cars and the Bomber cars, with the Old Timers and the Dwarf cars making their last appearance of the year.

Five B omber cars arrived on Saturday.

Boston Larson lead all 12 laps to take home the first heat. His dad, Darren Larson lead all six laps of their reverse heat. In the 15 lap main event, Justin Beaulieu finally managed to snap

the Larsons’ main event winning streak, winning his first main event win of the year.

Nine Old Timers arrived for their last appearance of the year.

In the 20 lap feature race, James Miller grabbed an early lead and held on to take his first main event win at Saratoga this year.

In the Dwarf car division, a battle ensued between Mike Meeres and Stewart Lee; Meeres and Lee battled bumper to bumper in their 12 lap heat, with Meeres holding on to take the win.

But in a 10 lap reverse heat, Lee got the best of

Meeres, taking home the win. A 25 lap main event once again saw Meeres and Lee battle bumper to bumper, but on lap 17 Lee took the lead and held off Meeres to take his third main event win of the year.

who landed a 33.5 pound Tyee on August 25th using a plug, his rower was Ken Mar.

Locally stocked lakes are fishing slow at the moment and many anglers will wait and fish when the weather cools.

Stocked lakes that fished well in May have fished poorly in the past week.

Last Sunday on Echo Lake I noticed very little bug hatches on the water from about 11 am to 3pm.

When the hot days are here a short drive to the upper elevation lakes might be the answer to better fishing for trout, or head south and try Spider Lake for Bass.

Fly Fishing action on the Campbell River.

De Rock Fishing Derby held last weekend in Sayward. Anglers had a selection of great prizes to chose from and the prize presentations were held at the legion hall last Sunday. Halibut, ling cod and coho were caught along with some sockeye. Two of the largest fish caught that weekend were halibut which came in at 28 pounds. I get a chance to get to Sayward every Wednesday and the fishing for pinks was slow most of last week.

Fly-fishing the Campbell River will continue into the fall months when the Coho start arriving and the most action is located between the 2 bridges.

The pinks are getting dark but still provide good action on a fly rod. As we near the tail end of the pinks, lots of people are getting out fishing using spinning gear. Last week I had a chance to fly fish the Quinsam river with Patricia Brenan who was out for the first time this year. Patricia was using her number 6 rod and I gave her a fly that was a number 6 hook tied with a silver body and pink hackle front. With her first cast out the pink hit the fly and the fun began. With a couple of hours spent on the river it was time to head back home. We managed to hook and release a number of pinks that day. The Quinsam can provide plenty of fishing fun and the deep pools contain some nice cutties that are to be released.

The Campbell and Quinsam rivers will be closed for pinks September 15th.

Local cadet gets top honours at training camp C a mp b e l l R i v e r’s Taryn Koomen stood out this summer among his fellow cadets.

Koomen was one of more than 700 cadets who took part in a training program in Alberta.

And last week, Koomen was recognized for his achievements and progress when he was given the Top Survival Skills Award in the Cold Lake Air Cadet Summer Training Centre’s survival instructor program.

“This award is given to the cadet of each flight who has shown the best understanding and practical application and understanding of sur-

vival skills in the Survival Instructor course,” said Lieutenant Commander Robert Hansen, officer commanding survival training group.

“Cadet Koomen exemplifies the qualities we aim to instil in our cadets.”

Throughout the cadet training year, from September to June, Cadet Koomen is a member of the 363 Captain Brian Barker Squadron RCACS Squadron in Campbell River.

The local squadron was among more than 700 other cadets who attended training in Cold Lake during the summer.

With summer training now complete, Cadet Koomen will return for the new training year with his home squadron, with new experiences and added skills to apply to future endeavours.

Cadet training in Cold Lake first began in 1973 with the arrival of the Senior Leaders Course.

Today, approximately 700 cadets attend one of five summer training courses at CLACSTC, which vary in length from three to six weeks.

All courses are run by a mix of Canadian Forces members, senior staff cadets and civilian instructors.
