Message from NTFFRA president

Jill Hayward In this modern and technological era, it is easy to blissfully go on our merry way, finding all we need to clothe and feed our families at stores, shops, and department chain giants. But unless you live on a farm, how Jill Hayward, president many of us really know where all of those items we wear, utilize, or put on the table actually come from?

How are they made, how are they grown?

Part of the mission statement for the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association is, "To encourage, develop and promote the advancement of agriculture...".

In a nutshell that means our annual Fall Fair is about education – teaching the visiting public the value of agriculture; providing a venue where visitors can meet the families who grow the food, raise the stock, and help us to raise healthy and happy children.

To achieve this goal we annually put together a unique class on agriculture that fills three whole days with first rate fun for the whole family – from the smallest to the oldest. In fact, you'll be having such a great time enjoying entertainment, music, magic, laughter and thrills, that the learning part will just sneak up on you – and the great memories will last a lifetime!

We're very proud of our old time country fair, and we are especially proud of our membership, volunteers, exhibitors, and performers who bring what agriculture is really about to our fairgoers.

We are also very proud of our 4-H youngsters who keep agriculture alive and well as they carry it with them into their futures. We need to say a big thank you to them, and to the people who still work the earth, raise the stock, and feed the world. Without you, we'd all be lost.

Over the three days at the fair, you will find a wide variety of entertainment including BCRA Rodeo, dances, livestock shows, 4H events, arts and craft exhibits among many more. The Fall Fair and Rodeo highlights the deep history of our rural heritage and importance of agriculture in our regional and B.C.’s economy.

While you are at the fair catch up with some old friends, and maybe even make some new ones. Thank you to the organizers, volunteers and everyone who has made this community event possible. The Fall Fair and Rodeo is one of the premiere events in the Thompson Valley, bringing together the entire community to put on a fantastic show for all of us to enjoy.

Welcome back everyone! And to those of you here for the first time I guarantee you will be back in the future.

This year the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo celebrates 65 years of fun for the whole family!

What an incredible accomplishment for a totally volunteer association.

As you travel around the grounds Mayor Bill Humphreys please take the time to investigate all that there is to see. Everyone that is participating is eager to show off their efforts. This indeed is an old time fair with everything from 4H shows and displays, to a contest for the biggest pumpkin.

The BCRA rodeo brings competitors from far and wide.

You will be hard pressed to find a better display of the rodeo skills these young folks work hard to hone. Add in the excitement of a chariot race, and the fun of a lawn tractor race and your day won’t be wasted.

On behalf of the District of Barriere, council and I want to once again congratulate the hard working volunteers of the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association on their accomplishments, and to thank them all for their hard work and vision.

The new additions to the Agriplex, the rodeo arena and the fair grounds are all testament to your dedication and foresight. Visitors to the fair are what make all this work worthwhile.

I urge all of you that have taken the time to visit our community and attend the fair to come back often. There will be a multitude of new things to see and experience.

RIDE THE FREE SHUTTLE TO THE FAIR

• All three days 10 a.m. until 1/2 hour after the beer garden at the rodeo closes: The Barriere shuttle will stop at the Esso Station, Sam's Pizza & Ribs, Barriere Seniors Hall, Barriere Ball Park, Barriere Employment Center. A pick-up will take place at the Louis Creek Antique Store at 11 a.m. and a drop off at 5 p.m. The shuttle starts at Chu Chua at 9:15 a.m. and returns to Chu Chua the last run of the day. All times are approximate depending on traffic etc.. Shuttle will run approximately every 30 minutes . Times will be posted at pickup sites and at fairground main entry gate.

There will be no shuttle this year from Clearwater or Little Fort.

• Eli Barsi - singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist and yodeller, whose variant music style combines the sounds of Western Roots, Bluegrass, Gospel and Folk. Eli was born in Canada and raised a farm girl on the prairies of South Eastern Saskatchewan. She has appreciated independent achievements in Canada and the USA with radio charting singles, CMT videos, and many awards both sides of the border. Eli’s latest release is her 13th CD ' Portrait of a Cowgirl ' which includes 12 original songs in the collective themes of western lifestyle, rural sensibility and prairie passion. She recently received the 2014 Wrangler award for Best Western Composition at the annual Western Heritage Awards for her song 'Portrait of a Cowgirl'. She was also honoured in her home province with two awards for 2014 Roots Artist and Roots Album of the Year. Eli’s husband John Cunningham joins her on stage contributing upright bass, great harmony vocals and a fine yodel.

Beshano riders will amaze With daredevil feats of athletic ability, strength and control, the Beshano Bike Trials Club riders will be in attendance at this year's North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo.

Don't miss this thoroughly entertaining presentation suitable for all ages, and interests. The Beshano riders will be giving three performances a day on Aug. 30 and 31, and they are guaranteed to be exciting to watch and in some instances downright amazing.

“Wow”, was an exclamation heard frequently inside the North Thompson Agriplex during the Rural Living Expo and Trade Show this spring when the nationally acclaimed Beshano Bike Trials riders were performing. In fact they were so well received we just had to bring them back for the Fall Fair.

The show is fun, fast paced, and a crowd pleaser. And after each session the riders will spend 15 minutes with the audience to answer questions and sign autographs.

Today, the BESHANO Bike Trials Club is definitely top of the list when talking about mountain bike trial spectacles throughout North America.

Mountain bike trials is a sport where the objective is to use perfect balance to keep control of the bike while going over obstacles.

While competing, touching the ground or the obstacles with any parts of the body means points are deducted, which may then lead to a loss in the competition.

The Beshano Bike Trials Club web site says it Trials riding is an extreme test of bicycle handling skills, over all kinds of obstacles, both natural and man-made. It now has a strong – though small – following worldwide, though it is still primarily a European sport.

The mountain bike stunt show consists in discovering today’s incredible bike trials riding techniques. According to Wikipedia, mountain bike trials, also known as observed trials, is a discipline of mountain biking in which the rider attempts to pass through an obstacle course without setting foot to ground.

Competition trial bikes are characterized by powerful brakes, wide handlebars, lightweight parts, single-speed low gearing, low tire pressures with a thick rear tire, distinctive frame geometry, and usually no seat.

The Beshano Bike Trials Club was created by Karl Jeannot in 1999, in a small town called Contrecœur, in Quebec, Canada. His goal was to promote this fascinating sport by gathering a few friends and fellow trial riders to present shows to the public. Realizing the tremendous interest in the trials, Karl decided to invest more time into his project, to go further and to give the opportunity to the public in other cities to enjoy his bike productions.

North Thompson Fall Fair Assoc. since 1949 The North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association (NTFFRA) is a registered Society that was formed in 1949 to provide 4H youngsters with an opportunity to show their animals within the area.

The NTFFRA mission statement is: To encourage, develop and promote the advancement of agriculture and farm living in the North Thompson Valley, with special reference to the fostering of livestock, crops, orchard crops, poultry husbandries, industrial, commercial, educational, mechanical and household arts, and rural and urban young peoples organizations, 4H competitions, livestock competitions, fine arts, sewing and baking, gardening, bee keeping, and volunteerism at its finest.

The NTFFRA functions with a volunteer Board of Directors, along with an additional 100 dedicated community volunteers. There is no paid staff. Facility enhancements and upgrades are in almost all instances completed by volunteers. Major upgrades such as electrical, welding, carpentry, etc., are often provided by local contractors at cost, and with much done as in-kind donations. The NTFFRA owns its own land and is debt free.

The NTFFRA annually hosts the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo and is now in its 65th year. The event has become one of the leading regional events within the Thompson Nicola Regional District. Each year 10,000 11,000 visitors converge on the small community of Barriere over the week of the Fall Fair and Rodeo, bringing with them an estimated economic impact of over $500,000.

Thompson Agriplex facility by the NTFFRA has been a statement to community and working together for a common goal. The buy-in from valley residents and businesses has been phenomenal on this project, with cash and in-kind donations totaling well-over $800,00, and government support at $380,000.

Today the fair facility annually holds an average of 125 events, serving local, Regional, Provincial and National needs. As the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association continues to grow and expand the size and number of events held at the facility throughout the year, the direct economic impact to the community of Barriere and the surrounding Region is immediate and significant.

NTFFRA Ambassador Program 2014 This is the 65th year that the North Thompson Fall Fair & Rodeo Ambassador Program (previously called the Pageant) has been held. It is now the only Fall Fair in British Columbia to support an Ambassador Program.

This year's Ambassador Committee was kept busy, both with attending functions with the current Royalty, and working with our new candidates for 2014. Since early spring the candidates have been attending classes in dancing, speech, time management, agricultural, Fall Fair and area history, horsemanship skills, and so much more.

The candidates and reigning Royalty have also attended numerous community functions, and travelled to several Pageants or Coronations held in other communities.

As this program goes to press, the candidates are now preparing for their final appearance where our reigning 2013/2014 Royalty will be handing their crowns to the 2014/2015 winners. who will be crowned at the Ambassador Coronation on August 22.

The Ambassador committee would like to thank everyone that has helped in this program for both past and current years. Without these dedicated volunteer’s and supporters the program would not be the grand success that it continues to be. Thank you so much.

The North Thompson Fall Fair has been holding a parade during our annual event since 1950. This photo is of the Boulder Mtn. 4H Dairy Club parade float entry in the early 1950's.

If you like rodeo you'll know what bull riding is.

Ever wondered if you could stay on the back of a bull for eight seconds? Now's your chance to try – find Diablo, the mechanical bull in front of the beer garden. Diablo can be a gentleman with the youngsters, but give him a chance and he'll really show his stuff for the cowboys.

Tickets can be purchased at the Information Booth or the Amusement Ticket Booth close to the Climbing Wall.

Youngsters will find oodles of fun on the super slide, the bouncy castle, or finding their way out of the giant maize. The little ones can sit on the wooden horse for a photo op, play in the sand box, or check out the three little pigs' houses, all situated next to the information booth and the small blue building which is now a quiet place for moms and newborns.

While the kids play, the rest of the family can sit back in the shade and enjoy the great lineup of entertainment on the Interior Savings Outdoor Stage. You'll find none stop entertainment from music, to humour, magic and more – something for everyone, from adults to kids.

Check out the vendors and heritage displays in the North Thompson Agriplex conference hall, and while your there take a look at the 4-H beef and sheep competitions in the Agriplex arena.

If you love BINGO, you'll find it in the building just south of the food court by the rodeo arena.

Exciting competitions all 3 days There is plenty of fast moving action and competitions all three days of this year's fair. The BCRA Rodeo performances start each day at 1:30 p.m., with the pony chuckwagons burning up the track during intermission, and again after the rodeo. Also, during intermission in the rodeo arena see the amazing trick riding skills of Hearts of the West.

The rodeo arena will also host the Heavy Horse Pull in the Rodeo arena at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. You'll also find the Heavy Horse Log Skid competitions on Sunday, and the Multiple Hitch on Monday at 10:15 a.m. in the Rodeo Arena. Heavy Horses will also compete in driving classes and in hand. Find times and dates listed in the Schedule of Events at the front of this program.

Fall Fair has supported 4-H since 1949 Way back in 1949 the North Thompson Fall Fair was founded to give 4H youth an opportunity to show their projects in competition. Today the Association still stands by that commitment, and annually offers 4-H competitions all three days of the Labour Day Weekend Fair. The Association also makes it's facility available to the local Yellowhead 4-H Club for Weigh Days, Field Days, and other 4-H related events.

4-H competitions in the Agriplex This year you will find many of the 4-H competitions at the Fall Fair are being held inside the North Thompson Agriplex.

You'll also be able to see the youngsters preparing their project beef and sheep for the show ring; bathing, clipping, trimming and final preparations before competition.

The sheep and beef are also stabled inside the Agriplex.

Take a walk around. You'll find each 4-H Club with its own section of stabling, with information and awards readily displayed.

The clubs are all judged on how clean they keep their stable area, and you'll find the kids busy making it so.

Don't be shy about asking the 4-H members about their project animal, or about the 4-H program, and the events each club holds annually.

This year, 4-H is celebrating their 100th anniversary in British Columbia. In Barriere, we are also celebrating "100 years of 4-H in BC", in conjunction with our 65th annual North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo.

One of Canada's longest running and most respected youth organizations, 4-H allows Canadian youth to explore, learn and discover, while expanding their horizons. Across Canada, more than 8,000 trained volunteer leaders help more thank 26,000 youth members develop self-confidence and learn a wide variety of skills through hands-on project work.

For those who haven't been a part of 4-H, here is a little about the program. The four "H"'s stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. Members pledge all four to their club, their community and Canada as a whole. The pledge: My HEAD to clearer thinking, My HEART to greater loyalty, My HANDS to larger service, My HEALTH to better living, For my Club, my Community and my Country.

All youth, from ages eight to 21, can join 4-H. The goal of the program is to prepare the youth for their future as adult citizens. The skills they learn are the skills needed to contribute to making this a better world, and many who pass through the program go on to become leaders in their communities.

There are a huge number of projects to choose from at every level. Some of the B.C. provincial projects include: adopt-a-grandparent, crafts, photography, dairy, goats, sheep, poultry, and small engines.

Locally, 4-H gives back to the community and creates community leaders. Provincially, there are opportunities to attend conferences and camps, and the chance of winning scholarships. Nationally, members have the chance to see different parts of Canada and the world, more scholarships, and national conferences.

While 2013 marked 100 years of 4-H in Canada, this year we celebrate 100 years of 4-H in the province.

Celebrate rodeo at this year's Fair

Rodeo, or stampedes, began as friendly competitions between cowboys when ranchers and ranch hands gathered for picnics and race meets.

The competitions were almost all based on the day to day work of the cowboy, which involved roping, riding wild horses, handling rough stock, and understanding cattle and horses.

The British Columbia Rodeo Association (BCRA) was formed in 1988 when three associations within the province, the Interior Rodeo Association, Yellowhead Cowboys Association and the Vancouver Island Rodeo Association joined forces to become the primary governing body of rodeo in British Columbia.

The North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo hosts three days of BCRA rodeo every year during our annual fall event. Cowboys and cowgirls come from all over to compete in numerous events.

With non-stop action all three days is the wildest and most physically demanding of the the three rough stock events in rodeo. The rider is judged on his spurring technique, from the point of the horse's shoulder back to the rigging - the degree his toes are turned out during the ride, and his ability to lay back onto his horse. The wilder, the better. A cowboy will be disqualified for not staying on for the full eight seconds, missing his horse out (not having both feet over the point of the shoulder when the horse's front feet hit the ground on the first jump out of the chute), or double grabbing (taking hold of the rigging with both hands). The ride is scored by two judges, each giving the horse and the cowboy a score out of 25 points, for a total score of 100.

• Saddle bronc riding is the 'classic' event of rodeo, evolved from cowboys breaking colts on ranches. The most technical event in rodeo, it requires timing and fluid control. The rider must mark his horse out (both feet over the point of the shoulder when the horse's front feet hit the ground on the first jump out of the chute).

A halter, thick rein, and an association saddle (built to the guidelines of the governing association) are the main equipment. A rider must spur from the point of the shoulder to the back of the saddle. The smoother and more consistent the spurring, the higher the score. Disqualification occurs if the rider touches his horse or equipment with his free hand, doesn't mark his horse out, or is bucked off before the eight seconds elapse. The ride is scored out of 100 points by two judges, each giving the cowboy and horse a score out of 25 points apiece.

• Bull riding is considered to be the most dangerous and most popular rodeo event among spectators. The bulls average 1,500 to 1,800 pounds, and the cowboys average 130 to 175 pounds - not quite even odds. A ride lasts eight seconds and is scored out of 100 points by two judges. Each judge scores the bull and the cowboy out of 25 points each. Control on the cowboy's part is the main ingredient to last the full eight seconds, but spurring will get a higher score. A rider rides one-handed with a braided rope around the bull's girth, and with his free hand in the air. Disqualification will result if the cowboy touches the bull with his free hand or doesn't stay on the entire eight seconds.

Pony racers – burning up the track Power, speed, and excitement will once again thunder around the track to a cheering crowd for all three days of this year's event!

Thanks to the Westcoast Chuckwagon and Chariot Association, the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo annually presents some of the best chariot and chuckwagon racing that there is.

The association promotes quality racing and sportsmanship amongst their members, while continuing to provide the public with the best races possible.

Since the early 1960's pony chariot and chuckwagon racing has been a popular sport in Western Canada. The sport has grown into a very popular summer event, and has exceeded any possibilities that the original participants could ever have imagined.

Pony chariot and chuckwagon racing is a family sport; a sport where everyone from small children to adults are involved in one way or another.

At the race meets you'll find the whole family in attendance as each one takes care of their chores and duties involving their horses and the racing events.

Once the race circuits start in the spring, it's like a family reunion where everyone gets to socialize with all the friends they have not seen since last fall's race meets.

Chariot racing started to grow, in one form or another, in the early sixties. Events ranged from two horses hooked to a pole connected to a set of rubber tires on which the driver sat on a padded

seat; to some made with big bicycle type tires where the driver sat down to drive.

Longtime drivers in the sport can tell about some of the first races held. Some included racing up the back alley behind a hotel, down to an old sawdust pile and back again. Everyone came out of the hotel to watch, and the racers then joined them and the horse racing tales began.

Other areas raced on the ball diamonds after the ball games finished, and sometimes played ball on the ponies after the races were over.

Depending on where the race track was in each town determined the length of the track – which varied from only one quarter (1/4) mile or one third (1/3) mile – four tenths (4/10) mile was a long track.

The same as with anything involving thrills and spills, people kept trying out different things until they found what worked and what wasn’t too dangerous. Today the tracks are ½ mile to 5/8 mile.

At many events in the early days the chariots lined up behind a pick-up truck with a gate on it, which extended the width of three chariots. It was going 30 mph when it crossed the finish line, then pulled off to let the teams go by.

Other places started out with the teams at a standing start, held by holders until a horn was blown; and others had a running start, each outfit trying to stay even until they reached the starting line and the horn blew. In 1972 steel barrels were used for the outfits to make a figure eight pattern around before racing onto the track. Then in 1987 it was made mandatory to use plastic barrels (open

The wagons weigh a minimum 550 pounds, with iron or steel wheels which cannot turn under the wagon box; wheels are 11/4 to 21/2 inches wide and no more than 43 inches high; the box is 7-9 feet long and 34-38 inches wide.

Measuring the ponies each year has involved the most changes over time. First was a 48 inch measure, using a bar. in 1972 – 50 inch; and in 1982 54 inch. In 1985 all two year olds measured had to be re-measured in June. At present the measure is a 581/2 inch walking measure. Different variations of this form of measure was used until 2005, when groups started using a laser line measure. With this the horse is led across a board with a loose lead shank, and is measured in if it does not break the laser.

Individuals, small businesses, or corporations who sponsor a wagon, or chariot, or race meet, are very important to chuckwagon and chariot drivers.

With the cost of travel so high now, the only way a lot of people can go down the road to the race meets is through the willingness of sponsors. These people are the life blood that keep the sport growing.

For over 40 years the hard working pony chariot and chuckwagon competitors have developed a high level of professionalism in their sport. It all goes back to their love of horses, a tremendous amount of hard work, and the western way of life.

Racing the pony chariots and 'chucks' is not just a sport, it's also a way of life.

NTFFRA Vice-President, Karl Rainer (left), was a recipient of the national Canadian Fair Champion award from the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions for his outstanding volunteerism.

NTFFRA Director and Rodeo Manager, Carmen Ross, received the BCRA Lifetime Achievement Award of 2013 for her ongoing volunteer work involving rodeo in British Columbia.
