The Alberni Inlet and harbour will be filled with anglers of all ages in boats of all sizes this weekend as the 43rd annual Salmon Festival kicks off on Friday.

T

he chinook salmon are back at Salmon Fest this year and organizer Dan Washington couldn’t be happier.

“It’s a bigger fish and it’s a more exciting fish to catch than the coho,” he said. “It’s more of a draw when the chinook salmon are available to be fished.”

Last year, low returns at the hatcheries meant that the Salmon Fest, held at Clutesi Haven Marina, had a cohoonly derby, something which dampened enthusiasm for the usually highly anticipated event.

“Our numbers reflected that: less people came and entered the derby, less people showed up and participated in the festivities on the grounds.

“It was not quite the money maker that it usually is when the chinook salmon are involved.”

While the Salmon Fest is a

fun event for the community, it also has another purpose; to raise money for local charities and non-profits.

“There’s no real commercial venues [at Salmon Fest], it’s Kiwanis, Rotary, the Lions Club, sororities are down there selling their ice cream, Rescue Squad sells raffle tickets,” Washington said.

“Rotary does their $10,000 draw and that’s one of their main fundraisers for the year so they count on the crowds to buy the tickets. Same with the Kiwanis’ barbecue. It’s a win-win situation.”

Washington is hoping for the festival to raise $10,000 so that when local non-profits need the funding it’s available for them.

The Salmon Fest has seen a decline in numbers since its glory days in the 1980s and recent years have left organizers wondering how to keep the festival going.

“They were pondering commercial [vendors] only becasue they weren’t raising the money and they wanted the festival to continue.”

– Dan Washington But Washington is hoping that with the chinook back again this year, the city will come out to the derby and help the festival raise the money it needs.

“Hopefully 43 is going to be a good year for us.”

It certainly looks like it’s shaping up to be a good one, with preparations having

begun on Monday night and the event slated to start on Friday night with bang, courtesy of the Quality Foods fireworks as soon as it gets dark.

But the festivities aren’t the main draw.

“You could walk away with $15,000 just for going fishing,” Washington said.

All it’ll cost derby hopefuls is a $40 per rod entrance fee, most of which will go towards the prize money, flagging at the intersection of Highway 4 and Beaver Creek Road (across from Clutesi Haven Marina), security and general set-up of the festival, where new regulations over the years have meant ever increasing costs.

“We used to do [the flagging] with volunteers but the volunteers aren’t quite as tough as the professionals, especially on Sunday during the Bullhead Derby with the kids where they’re very aware of making sure traffic stops so that the little guys can run across the street.”

The Bullhead Derby is an

attempt to continue to draw in younger crowds even as the old faithfuls bow out of the derby. “[The kids] bring in the bullheads, which are an ugly little bottomfeeder fish, and then they win prizes. It’s just something for the little squirts to do.”

Along with local residents, the festival draws people from as far away from England and Scotland.

“It’s interesting at the end to sit down and do the demographics and see where people actually come from.”

Washington also likes to see all of the return visitors that the festival gets.

“That makes us feel proud that we’re worthy of coming back and trying out,” he said.

“We get a lot of local repeats and a lot of familiar faces.”

While last year the coho-only derby drew approximately 1,000 entries, this year the organizers are hoping for 2,000 entries, enough to offset the increased prize money.

Cougar on pier Will they or won’t they? causes sensation ◆ B.C. TEACHERS’ STRIKE

With time running out for teachers and the government to negotiate a deal that would see students back in schools on Sept. 2, B.C. Minister of Education Peter Fassbender, government negotiator Peter Cameron and B.C. Teacher’s Federation President Jim Iker will meet at the B.C Legislature on Wednesday.

(A decision isn’t expected until after the News’ press deadline.)

While they would like to be back at work in September, Port Alberni teachers have been out on the picket lines again this week.

“Teachers remain hopeful that schools will open on Sept.

2,” said Alberni District Teachers’ Union President Ken Zydyk, “however, to date BCTF’s attempt to have government sit at the bargaining table with Vince Ready present and in mediation has not been successful.”

on Sept. 2 and that he was “disappointed that the normally exciting beginning to a new school year is shrouded in uncertainty.”

While parents are concerned about whether or not schools will open on time, Zydyk said that he hasn’t noticed any enrolment differences so far.

“What we are hearing from parents is that they want their child to be in public school starting Sept. 2 and that is the wish of teachers too.”

While parents want their children in schools on time, Zydyk is enthused by the local support he’s seen.

“We’re sensing that there’s strong support from local parents for our fight to convince government that they should be improving the learning

conditions for students, in particular around class size limits and guaranteed support levels for students with special limits.”

Much like in the rest of the province, Zydyk said that local classroom sizes have been increasing in recent years.

“We used to have our primary numbers lower than the legal amount but they’ve been creeping up to the max of 24 in some locations,” he said, adding that, “you have to be careful with averages because what the government likes to use for the educator to student ratio includes all administration [staff] that typically don’t teach full time.”

But the real issue for local teachers is the number of students with special needs in each classroom.

“We have some classrooms with as many as seven students on an Individualized Education Plan and there’s very little extra support for them.”

The lack of support for children with special needs means that all the children in the class suffer.

“Teachers are finding that it’s too hard with the higher class sizes and the diverse needs of students to meet the needs of all students.”

Zydyk also thinks that the recently announced $40 per day allowance for parents of children under 13 shows that the government isn’t serious about reaching a settlement.

“They would rather have children out of school than in school and they’re prepared to pay $12 million a day for children to be out of school,” he said.

There’s a lot of things you might expect to see at Centennial Pier but a cougar isn’t one of those.

However, that’s just what happened on Sunday morning at approximately 3 a.m.

“Apparently around three in the morning [my stepson Caleb] heard some loud noises that woke him up,” Bouchra Zouhou, co-owner of the Swept Away Inn said.

“When he looked from his bedroom window he saw a cougar and it was a large one.”

Savard kept watch on the cougar for close to an hour, scared as to what it might do if someone came down.

“People come here that late at night time,” Zouhou said.

Luckily, while the cougar did explore the pier, no one was hurt.

“It went all the way down to the fingers by the water and then came back to underneath the ramp,” she said.

Western Forest Products’ Somass Mill will shut down temporarily beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2, due to a lack of fibre. The company is blaming severe fire danger and

dry conditions in the woods.

“We’ve had to curtail our timberlands due to the risk of fire,” Western Forest Products’ director of communitcations and government relations Amy Spencer said.

“That has meant a

lack of Western red cedar logs to process at the mill.”

The mill employs approximately 60 people, but Spencer didn’t know how many would be directly affected by the shutdown. “It will still be open for

shipping and minor maintenance,” she said.

The mill will reopen once the wetter weather returns. “It will restart as quickly as possible,” Spencer said. “It’s dependent on the weather and how quickly we can

access the red cedar without risking the safety of our timber operators.”

During the beginning of the recession in 2009, Somass Mill was closed down for eight months, putting around 130 employees out of work; when it

An interesting picture is emerging in the Alberni Valley’s housing market, which has heated up over the summer.

However, in recent weeks a far higher percentage than normal of her clients

have been newcomers to the Valley.

“A way higher percentage are people who have been coming from out of town, interested in purchasing property.

possible LNG facility and transshipment hub proposed for the mouth of the Alberni Inlet.

However, Pat Deakin, the city’s economic development manager, says that he’s aware of that possibility and if either plan comes to fruition the negatives will be dealt with. “[The city has] done a great job of making sure that affordable housing is in place,” he said, adding that if it comes to it, the city will continue to make sure that affordable housing is available so that longterm residents aren’t pushed out by the newcomers.

Part of the reason that Deakin is so confident about the housing market continuing to cater to every income category in Port Alberni is the class of investors that the city is attracting.

“I like the quality of investors showing up on our doorstep,” he said, adding they’ve show a desire to “assist in the creation of a community” and not just housing units.

These investors are also looking for property within the city now, whereas in the past Minions has seen many of her clients looking at places outside of city limits in an attempt to avoid higher property taxes.

“What people are saying is that it’s attractive to the tenants to have services that are provided by the city,” she said.

Celebrate our salmon Port Alberni is the Salmon Capital of the World. And this weekend, the 43rd annual Salmon Festival and fishing derby aims to underline that point to the pretenders, our colleagues to the north in Campbell River.

(Yes, we really put that in print.)

This weekend is a time to celebrate this precious resource, to revel in the return of the chinook however low their numbers (and remember we need to protect them for future generations), and to enjoy the bounty provided to us from the Alberni Inlet.

It is also a time to celebrate those in the Alberni Valley that work hard to protect this precious natural resource, such as the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association volunteers, School District 70 teachers and biologists who run the annual Gently Down the Creek program, West Coast Aquatic for its numerous initiatives and hatcheries such as Omega Pacific on Great Central Lake and Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery.

Several of these groups have received funding from the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s 2014 Community Salmon Program, or from Pacific Western Brewing’s Community Foundation for enhancement programs coming up in the next year. It is a good reminder to those of us who enjoy fishing and eating the fish caught in our waters that it is also up to us to protect our resource.

While we are standing in the lineup at the Salmon Fest barbecue pit on the weekend, it would be wise of us to think about the other side of the fillets, and what truly makes us the Salmon Capital of the World.

She said farmers also aren’t sold on the notion of easing the rules for secondary businesses.

“You will already find situations where there’s, let’s say a welding shop or something like that attached to somebody’s residence who lives on ALR land,” Popham said.

“That sort of stuff has been allowed, but it’s always had to go through the ALC or some sort of process that’s been in place.

“This leaves that process out, and so I think that’s the problem people are having.”

She noted that non-farm activities have a way of growing until they become the main business.

A reader who attended the Kelowna session said even winery operators aren’t thrilled about the proposal to enlarge retail space and allow sales of wine or beer not made on site.

The new hospitals in Campbell River and the Comox Valley will have 95 and 153 beds respectively. Nanaimo is listed at 256. I realize that all those hospitals should have more beds than Port Alberni and area, but for us to have only 52 at West Coast General Hospital is ridiculous.

The problems of overcrowding caused by extended-care patients being in WCGH aside, I don’t think that 52 acutecare beds is adequate.

Also, I see no immediate possibility of the Island Health Authority funding and operating a new multi-level care facility here (40-60 beds).

We will get a few new dribs and drabs at Rainbow Gardens.

A private facility would bankrupt most local patients. While good, home care is a marginal add on.

Our old hospital could accommodate 100 beds, but was downsized to 80 by closing the fifth floor and then closed for a new facility of 52 beds and an atrium the size of a football field (a very costly, unnecessary boondoggle).

As an aside, I should note that Alberni Valley patients needing extended care could possibly go to facilities on the east coast of the Island.

Well, as long as everybody is happy with not adding eight new beds to WCGH and accept few new extended care beds, guess we’ll have to see what happens.

Consultation a farce for farms To the Editor,

Re: Farm changes a great leap forward (B.C. Views, Aug. 14).

Tom Fletcher’s opinions are not shared by any farmers I know.

The B.C. government’s post-facto “public consultation process” is farcical given that Bill 24, which amends the Agricultural Land Commission Act, was passed this May. An authentic public consultation process should have been multi-year and province-wide, not invitation-only meetings and a onemonth-long token public feedback process which highlight yet again the magnitude of our democratic deficit.

Fletcher’s analogy to Mao Tse-tung’s Great Leap Forward is apt, however, given B.C.’s democratic deficit and because Mao’s vision gave rise to China’s Great Famine, resulting in tens of millions of deaths.

The Great Leap Forward has been defined as “a very expensive disaster.”

British Columbians will also pay a high price for the B.C. Liberal scheme to drastically change the ALR, as our food insecurity will increase and farm land even more polluted. The “farming” activities proposed by the B.C. Liberals will reduce the land available to grow food. Alcohol has very limited nutritional value.

The B.C. Liberals’ continued support for industrial agriculture, one of the world’s biggest causes of greenhouse gas emissions, combined with fracking, oil development and anaerobic digesters will further pollute farmland.

Manure from organic farms is worth far more as fertilizer than as fodder for anaerobic digesters; only conventional farmers would seek to use their

contaminated manure to generate power.

The B.C. Liberals need to remember that we all eat, including their buddies in the petroleum and the liquor sectors.

Rebellion getting deadly To the Editor,

At 61 years, I’m having flashbacks to the ‘60s race-riots watching the awful goings-on in Ferguson.

Haven’t we learned anything, or is history just repeating itself in a ‘New Age’ way?

And it’s not just about racism, it’s about over-reaching authoritarianism— which people never accepted, no matter what their race, colour or creed.

Coming from a police-family, the “militarization of police forces” and a “Rambo-like attitude” is something my Father (R.C.M.Pretired) expressed concern about in the 1970s as he noted how quickly police personnel resorted to overbearing (beating) if not deadly (use of firearms) force against unarmed individuals— often mentally ill and/ or high on drugs.

Being pre-pepper spray days, Dad would say, “Whatever happened to teaching hand-to-hand combat, like we were taught (in RCMP basic training) or throwing a net over someone?”

And he also used to ask: “Who is being accepted into police forces and how are they being vetted now?”

Finally, if we aren’t learning from our history then is it any wonder disaffected youth will give the finger to “The Man” like we did as teenagers in the ‘60’s?

Rebellious youth never changes.

Problem is, today some teenagers don’t board buses and travel miles overland to meet on the lawn of the White House to protest war and racial or gender inequality.

Instead some are recruited by deadly misguided forms of idealism and run away to become jihadists.

So let’s take a few lessons from Ferguson as we send condolences and pray for their recovery and reconciliation.

For there’s a little “Ferguson” to go around, and give us all pause for consideration.

Imagine, you are on a ride at Disneyland and you go into a dark tunnel; it’s scary, you feel disoriented, you are going fast, and then the car you are in drops straight down (terrifying) and then you glide out into the sunshine again and on to the next adventure.

In the darkness and uncertainty did you sit close to the person next to you and hang on, or did you push them away? Life can be like the ride, suddenly we can enter dark, uncertain, sometimes terrifying times. We know it won’t last forever, like the ride, but some people move closer and link arms against trouble, and some people blame each other and toss their partner out of the boat. It’s a shame, because everyone knows deep inside that no storm will last forever, and when they get back into the sunshine, suddenly they are alone and don’t have their partner’s company for the next adventure. As much as your buddies may bang you on the back with a ‘way to go’ when you toss your partner, the truth is, if being alone was so much fun, how come everyone is looking for a relationship.

When you get into a storm, link arms, and include God, make a threesome. It is a known fact that a two strand cord can unravel fast or even break, but the Bible says a three-strand cord is really hard to break.

Salmon Fest organizers pin hopes on chinooks’ return reminiscing about the good old days.

“Back in those days this all opened early and stayed late. The beer gardens went through probably 100 kegs of beer, whereas now we only go through 40.”

“When I started in the early 1980s we could have up to 4,000 people enter the derby,” said Washington. “I think our record was 4,340.”

Washington is happy to see the derby continue on for new generations but that doesn’t stop him from

event for the community, it’s the last kick before the kids go back to school... and even if you don’t have any money you can come down here and mingle and look at the dead fish and see what’s going on.”

The Kiwanis are also responsible for the biggest draw; the famous salmon barbecue. This year they hope to serve 4,000 pounds of salmon.

Bulldogs kick off main training camp Friday SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs will hit the ice on Friday for their main B.C. Hockey League training camp.

“We’re excited to get going,” head coach and general manager Kevin Willison said.

Willison and assistant coach Adam Hayduk have a baker’s dozen of returning players, out of 36 coming to camp.

Willison will pare the number of players to 27 after the weekend, and will be at 22 players by the time the Bauer BCHL showcase begins on Sept. 19.

Players began arriving in the Alberni Valley this week and are excited to get on the ice and begin what should be an exciting 2014/15 season, Willison noted.

Over the three-day main camp, players will participate in education presentations, fitness testing, baseline tests, practices, three fulllength scrimmage games, all leading up to the annual Red/White game on Sunday.

Card of Thanks To say that he will be missed is an understatement. Harold was a kind and gentle man who somehow always managed to get things done. He leaves a legacy of three fire halls and 40 well trained volunteers. During his time, there have been over 400 volunteers who have been in the Sproat Lake Fire Department, some for a short time and some are still serving.

When Harold passed early Sunday morning on the 3rd day of August, to the many brotherhood of firefighters and their ever ready wives who arrived with food, flowers and fruit baskets. Your thoughtfulness was appreciated and those hugs helped, thank you all for giving and listening.

A fire hydrant seemed appropriate for Harold’s last ride in his little red fire jeep “Mabel�. The hydrant was carried into the church by his close friend Ted Blight, while Fire Chief Wade Hepp carried in Harold’s white chief ’s helmet, followed by the valley fire fighters. Chief Hepp presented Peggy with the helmet.

Rick & Dor, Ted & Jean, Denis SauvĂŠ and so many friends & neighbours who offered to help. Father Stephen Payne and Rev Minnie Hornridge thank you for your prayers for Harold. Dr. Alan Fraser, you lost not just a patient but a good friend, your care and compassion was amazing. The West Coast General Hospital team of nurses & aids and staff who truly cared for Harold during his two stays, totaling over 8 months, he became friends to all. A special thanks to Kevin for his care and compassion especially on the last two nights.

To Dr. Sam Williams & Dr. Smit, thank you. Rocky and all the aids at Fir Park, for his brief stay, Harold loved the Saturday bus rides and the trip to the pool. He also loved the food thank you to all. Susan Nye for playing the bag pipes and Bob Hudson for playing the piano.

The Wynans’ family, Marnie singing, Glen reading the fire fighters prayer and Nathaniel the video, our sincere appreciation. Ted Blight for reading the eulogy, as he told of Harold’s and his escapades over their 50 years. BUCKLE, Alfred Jr.

May 11, 1955 – July 30, 2014 It is with great heartache and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son & brother who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his mom Pat (Eric), brother Ken (Debbie), nephew Raymond, stepchildren Mike & Shawna and many other friends and relatives including Rick (a true brother in spirit) Sharon & Ricky who’s outpouring of love and support throughout Fred’s battle was a true blessing. He was predeceased by his dad Alfred, brothers John, Russell and David and Sister Karen.

Growing up Fred’s passion was boxing. Under the guidance of his trainer Ellio Ius, he went on to win several titles including the Golden Gloves. A 10 count was held in Fred’s memory at this year’s Golden Gloves in Langley. Most of his career was spent in the construction business with his cousin Rick.

Nothing meant more to Fred than his FAMILY – immediate & extended. They enjoyed sports, camping, guitars, singing, family outings, horseshoes & campfires to name a few.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at NRGH Palliative Care Ward for their compassion, caring and understanding of his needs.

No funeral service by request.

The Rollin Art Centre will be closed for our annual closure beginning Aug. 26 and re-open Tues. Sept.

9th. We look forward to seeing you in the fall, with new and exciting family events and workshops.

Penner’s art opens in Sept.

Shelley Penner will be the next artist showcasing her paintings of acrylic on canvas at the Rollin Art Centre. This collection is of nature and especially wildlife, is her passion. Shelley

captures the images like a photograph.

Shelley’s art exhibit begins Sept. 16th and runs until Oct. 11th.

Join us in the gallery for refreshments, Sat. Sept. 20th from 1-3 pm for her artist reception.

Drawing classes for adults Echo Centre offers an adult drawing class for beginners or those looking for a refresher. This class is for people who have little or no experience with drawing, but are keen to try. It could also benefit those with some drawing skills who want to improve.

You will cover the basics of learning to draw using various

techniques such as contour drawing, shading, and negative drawing and so on.

Classes run every Tues., starting Oct. 14-Dec. 9 (No class Nov 11). 7 – 9 pm Cost $140 for 8 classes, supply list available when you sign up. Please register at Echo Centre.

This workshop concentrates on the ideas and helpful hints to get you started on creating your own lantern masterpieces.
