A cool viral trend promoting awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), called the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” has spread to Oak Bay. The challenge involves the participant dumping a tub of icy water over their own head, and started appearing online late last

month.

For those who take part, it’s customary to issue the challenge to others, which has helped it spread across Hollywood, with many celebrities taking up the challenge on television and online.

The Oak Bay Fire Department took the challenge on Monday after being nominated by the Saanich Fire Department and Chief Constable Andy Brinton of the Oak Bay

Police Department.

“We’ll all collectively make a donation as well,” said Tom Pearse, deputy fire chief of the Oak Bay Fire Department. “To raise awareness of the disease and to help them get some money to fund their research.”

A single vehicle crashed in spectacular fashion in Estevan Village during the lunch hour Thursday, Aug. 21.

“It really was driver error,” said Oak Bay police Const.

Rick Anthony. “There was really no reason for it.”

The Toyota sedan, driven by an Oak Bay woman, left the roadway, drove up onto the sidewalk and smashed

through a bike rack before striking a rented Subaru parked at the curb and coming to a stop.

A bicycle in the bike rack was damaged and the driver was taken to hospital “for precautionary reasons, complaining of neck and back pain,” said Anthony.

The crash took place steps away from a similar incident that occurred a year ago when a Ford Explorer drove through the front window of the Village

Several drinking drivers nabbed

A vehicle was spotted traveling at 80 kilometres an hour in a 40 km zone on Oak Bay Avenue on Aug. 22.

The vehicle was stopped and police say the driver, who was demonstrating his new car to his wife and two young sons, smelled of liquor.

The vehicle was impounded and the driver received a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and a speeding ticket.

During a roadside vehicle check on Ring Road at University Drive on Aug. 23 a driver admitted to police he had been drinking. A roadside prohibition was issued to the driver, his license was

seized and vehicle impounded.

On Aug. 24 a vehicle was seen exceeding the posted rate of speed on Beach Drive. When the driver was asked to produce his license, the police officer noted the smell of liquor. As result the driver received a 24 hour roadside suspension.

A man was seen removing sand from Willows Beach in the afternoon of Aug. 19.

A witness was able to get the license plate number of his vehicle and the man was contacted and warned regarding the bylaw prohibiting removal of grass, turf, gravel, earth, sand or rock in or from any part of any park, or any beach, except under contract with District of Oak Bay. The fine associated with offence is $50.

There’s little doubt great photos tell a story and make reading that can be complex and daunting, far more interesting. If you approach any official community plan as a fantastic tome of information and photographs, it could be more palatable for the average reader.

It’s an approach those developing the draft OCP for Oak Bay knew would work, and they needed photos to make it happen. The advisory committee and consultants led by Catherine Berris sent the word out.

As a member of the OCP advisory committee, Gloria Back knew the components covered in the plan and what kind of images might be required. Images aside from the stunning scenery found on Willows Beach, Oak Bay Avenue or Beach Drive.

Oak Bay Police responded to a 911 call in the 800 block of St. Patrick Street at approximately 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday evening, where a resident had interrupted a break and enter at his residence.

Police say the suspect fled and the homeowner attempted to grab him but was unsuccessful. The homeowner told police the suspect then turned back on the him and struck him with a pry bar, causing extensive injury to his forearm.

A struggle ensued and the homeowner was able to get the crowbar away from the male, who then fled.

Police were able to establish the identity of a suspect, who is known to police, and a region-wide bulletin was broadcast to all local police agencies.

At approximately 5:45 a.m. Aug. 21 the suspect was arrested in the downtown area

by VicPD officers.

The homeowner was taken to hospital with a significant laceration to his arm.

A 19 year old man is in custody and will appear in court later today charged with Aggravated Assault, Break and Enter, Theft and Possession of Break-In Instruments.

The man will also be charged by VicPD with Possession Of Stolen Property in relation to the Oak Bay break and enter. editor@oakbaynews.com

After getting soaked, the Oak Bay Fire Department then challenged the Greater Victoria Fire Chiefs Association, the Victoria Fire Department Local 730 and the Oak Bay Public Works managers.

The society managed to raise $55,000 through last year’s Walk for ALS, and is hoping the Ice Bucket Challenge will bring more people to the walk and help them raise even more.

“It doesn’t matter how we do it, we just want to raise awareness for ALS,” said Ellen Mahoney, president of the ALS Society of B.C.’s Victoria chapter. “We definitely want a cure for the 3,000 Canadians living with the disease.”

Making moves for Malawi Teen keeps focus on giving back, here and overseas Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

A girl from Malawi bolstered Leah Smith’s desire to give to others.

The visitor to Canada was part of Malawi Girls on the Move and told her tale of a domineering father who, in an effort to save funds, sent her away to live with an uncle. That uncle chose to educate the youth through the Girls on the Move schooling program.

“Ever since, she’s gained so much respect from her father,” Smith said. “It has an effect on everyone around them … and that’s just one of their stories.”

The Grade 7 student at Lansdowne middle school started raising money for Malawi Girls on the Move in Grade 4 when she met co-founder Christy Johnson at a garden party with her mom.

Their mission is to offer quality education to girls from the rural areas of Malawi who would

be otherwise unable to continue with their education beyond primary school, due to a lack of financial support.

The cause spurred Smith to create crafts and sell them at fairs around the region over the past two years. Last month, she held a silent auction that raised $6,216.65 for the fund, a number she can spout off the top of her head.

That work is just one of the reasons she got a great 13th birthday present this year. While enjoying a birthday frozen yogurt with her dad and a friend, he got the email saying she’d won an Oak Bay Young Exceptional Star award.

Along with the overseas work, Smith is heavily involved in the Eco Action group at school where last year they did a garbage audit and reduced trash by 75 per cent (for which the school got an EcoStar award in 2013).

She and a couple of friends also organized a Christmas toy drive for the Salvation Army shop.

“That way parents who couldn’t afford anything could go there,” Smith said. Then there are her other projects through Me to We and opportunities through Guides and Pathfinders.

Leah Smith, 13, has a passion for guitar and is driven by a need to raise funds for the Malawi Girls on the Move organization.

“It’s just something she’s always done,” said her mom, Julie Wallace. “It gives her a lot of skills working with groups, being a leader … confidence.”

Smith sings in the school choir and takes vocal lessons outside of class, as well as playing flute and percussion in band.

Then there’s the guitar she picked up three years ago.

“Guitar is my favourite. I get to be most free with that,” she said, espousing the great teaching style of Paul O’Brien.

a.k.a. “Lazy Eye” The word “amblyopia” is Greek in origin and it quite literally means slow vision. The term “lazy eye” is often used to describe amblyopia to patients.

If an eye is to become amblyopic, it will do so during the period of visual development between birth and about ten years of age. One eye is sending a weaker signal to the brain; therefore fewer connections will be made to the brain for that eye. This condition can occur if one is born with eyes significantly different prescriptions. Over time, the ability to use both eyes at once is diminished. The brain has many cells requiring input from both eyes. These cells, devoted to binocular vision and depth perception, are unable to develop if both eyes are not sending a strong signal, consequently the weaker eye wanders. Researchers disagree about the exact age up to which amblyopia can be successfully treated. They do agree however that the key to remediating amblyopia is early detection and treatment. Remember, the first eye examination should be at around the third birthday.

Seaweeds have all sorts of other practical uses and are commonly found in bio fuels, fertilizers, pet food and medicines.

Much research is currently being done on algae and its uses, particularly in the medical field. Different forms of algae are thought to assist in many health disorders from diabetes to ADHD, although there is some uncertainty.

I find it amazing that something so “simple” as seaweed can provide so many important uses. The next time

you’re at the beach take a moment to admire the beauty and diversity of seaweeds.

While the Ice Bucket Challenge adds a bit of fun to our social media and even our day for those participating, the impetus to fundraise for the cause should not get lost in the merriment.

ALS is a fatal disease. In addition to acclimating to the challenges that comes with losing control of voluntary muscle movement, people with the disease progressively lose their ability to eat, speak, walk, and eventually to breathe.

People living with ALS face a difficult journey and the ALS Society of Canada helps them by supporting research toward a cure and building public awareness of the disease.

Go ahead, dump a bucket of ice water over your head and post a video for all of your friends to see, but remember while you’re at it to make a donation to als.ca/ icebucketchallenge.

Taking the next steps in sewage treatment The Capital Regional District’s “failed” sewage treatment plan continues to generate heat but not the kind that powers lights or warms homes.

It’s the heat of the political kind, turned up on Esquimalt’s Mayor and council, as well as Esquimalt residents, because of their refusal to allow a treatment plant to be built at McLoughlin Point.

Political fear mongering is unfortunate and threatens to put the CRD at a disadvantage, if its ultimate goal is to get parties back to the table working together cooperatively on other options. How can public “blame and finger pointing” possibly create positive feelings that would establish an environment that leads to constructive collaboration? We want proactive political leadership that encourages communities to work together on finding solutions.

As an Oak Bay councillor, I support sewage treatment and resource recapture.

But I voted against sending Esquimalt Mayor and council a letter to reconsider their decision, believing then as I do now, that Esquimalt residents have spoken through due process and that their voices and their autonomy should be respected.

As it turns out, it was at an August 13 Core Area Liquid Waste Management

Committee (CALWMC) meeting, that a CRD flyer that would be mailed directly to Esquimalt residents outlining the advantages of a cash offer, was also rejected by a majority of committee members representing seven municipalities.

In the case of the CRD sewage issue and the Seaterra Plan, nothing could be truer.

Over the summer, I have tried to learn as much as possible and scanned websites and documents, met with our local MLA Andrew Weaver, with regional council colleagues, with representatives of the Sewage Treatment Action Group (STAG), and attended a CRD Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee (CALWMC) meeting.

As a North Saanich councillor between 2008 and 2011, I was also a member of the Saanich Peninsula Wastewater/Water Commission that oversees a sub-regional sewage treatment plant located in North Saanich above the Pat Bay Highway to the west. If you have never seen the plant from the highway, that’s the whole idea. Ironically Oak Bay never made these numbers public.

There is ongoing concern about deer/ human interactions and vehicle/deer incidents.

According to the provincial wildlife biologist, there have not been any reported attacks on humans by deer on Vancouver Island.

There have been reports of aggressive deer, usually during fawning season or in the rut, but no reported direct contact between people and deer. Years ago a cyclist was killed in a deer accident, not in Oak Bay but in Cordova Bay,

proving it could happen anywhere.

Mayor Jensen also stated that his biggest concern was safety, especially motor vehicle accidents. After eight months of asking for better signage and speed control Oak Bay finally installed deer warning signs on Cadboro Bay Road and Lansdowne Road this past week.

Obviously it’s not that big of a concern.

Oak Bay is not rural like Invermere or Elkford.

Traps cannot be placed without being seen by residents, and only if they are placed on private property secluded from view, will they not be seen.

If residents agree on placing a trap on their property, will they need the permission of their neighbours? I would not want my family to witness an inhumane slaughter on the property next door.

Oak Bay is the shining jewel in the CRD crown. Let’s not tarnish it with images of it becoming a bloody killing field.

Teachers don’t profit from a strike and neither should the government.

The $12,000,000 a day saved during the strike needs to be refunded back to the people who pay for education – every BC property owner.

My property tax included a basic school levy of $1,463 or $8.17 per day. A 12-day strike means a $104.52 overpayment from me to the government for educational services not rendered to the children of the province as agreed.

Government has not delivered the basic school service for a full year (180 days) and should refund property owners per day for the duration of the strike.

If the Ministry of Education was refunding “their” savings back to property owner they may feel some pressure to settle.

Can we have a class action law suit on behalf of BC property owners please?

Three Monterey middle school girls sat outside the Pharmasave on Oak Bay Avenue on Monday and Tuesday raising money for a notable cause.

“The fundraiser is for building schools around the world for less fortunate countries,” said Kate Wedin, 12.

The young trio is raising money through Free the Children’s We Create Change campaign.

Classroom still best for brain Travis Paterson News staff

The old phrase, “use it or lose it,” still holds true, but it’s not quite that simple when it comes to brain activity.

A locally run class is helping those who might have passed up challenging their brains to get it back together.

New research is showing that, just as the body can always build muscle fibre (though at a slower rate later in life), it’s also possible to build new neural pathways much later in life than previously believed.

In fact, it’s believed it’s never too late, though it’s all relative to the state of someone’s mental and physical health.

The key is to challenge the mind on a consistent basis, which is the genesis of the Memory Plus classes run throughout Greater Victoria by Silver Threads, said program co-ordinator Lisa Coulson.

“In our lifetime, the childhood class setting is often the healthiest time, when you’re being forced to use your mind,” Coulson said. “And that’s what Memory Plus is all about. We create a social group that performs games and activities which are all designed to challenge the brain, and it all relates back to memory.

“The program is designed for people in the beginning stages of memory difficulties, so some participants are in early diagnosis dementia or

Alzheimer’s, and do well to retain their abilities,” Coulson added. “Others are just being proactive,” she said. “It’s for anyone at any age.”

Class engagement creates a social atmosphere, which is an important part of the process, especially for those not well connected to their community. Coulson has had several participants tell her they look forward to the class all week.

Theme-based curriculum, such as camping in the summer time, stokes forgotten memories and reinvigorates neural pathways, she said.

“It ends up being a lot of fun, there is a lot of laughter, and I have to say, laughter is probably the most important ingredient to the class,” Coulson said. “There are a lot of prepared jokes, which leads to impromptu laughs throughout the day.”

Memory Plus classes have run locally for seven years and the program is continuing to grow. Sessions run Tuesdays at St. George’s Anglican Church (3909 St. George’s Ln.) in Cadboro Bay; Mondays at the relocated Victoria Silver Threads building (2340 Richmond Rd.); Thursdays at St. Luke’s Church Hall (3821 Cedar Hill X Rd.) and on Friday’s at Saanich Silver Threads (286 Hampton Rd.).

But don’t just rely on a once-a-week classroom setting, said Coulson, who promotes as much activity as possible for seniors.

“Never slow down,” she said. “The best thing for the brain is to be a lifelong learner.”

Living to give back Travis Paterson News staff

Patricia Whitely has made a life out of helping out.

The Victoria resident continues to volunteer each month at Our Place and once a week at Mount St. Mary Hospital.

Among other duties at Mount St. Mary, Whitely arranges for a local daycare to come and sing, connecting the age groups.

“I think it’s important for the new generations to connect with the older generations as soon as possible,” she says.

Whitely was born and raised in Vancouver where she spent time with Canadian Girls in Training organization, a place that shaped her life and beliefs.

She went on to study education and earned her doctorate, specializing in early childhood education. It took her all over

the world, as she worked and volunteered in China, the Caribbean, Africa, Guatemela, Egypt and Cambodia.

“I ended up in a lot of different situations, working for the Army, at one point, and for the Organization for Cooperation and Overseas Development, though that’s no longer around.”

Whitely usually worked with schools to either develop or deliver English curriculum.

In Egypt, she partnered with mennonites in 20 schools and created an English language phonics program.

In addition to that, Whitely stepped forward to volunteer. In Egypt, it took her to a strange sounding, but very real adventure called Garbage City, a Christian group that collected garbage in Cairo and sorted out the recyclable materials.

Co-housing a fresh concept for seniors Seniors co-housing … now this makes sense.

I’m sure when any senior shuffles by a milestone – Year 70 in my case recently – there is a temptation to fall back on an ageless truism: “If I’d known I was going to live so long I would have ….”

In my case, as with many of my veteran colleagues from the jourBrian nalism trenches, that sentence ends with … “joined my newspaper’s pension plan.”

I didn’t. But, my partner and I got lucky. We own our modest retirement home outright and that makes the coming years less daunting. And, we have each other.

Many are not so fortunate. For many fixed income seniors the implications of housing costs and other daily living expenses are scary. For some these financial challenges are exacerbated by the terrible loneliness that can accom-

pany the less-than-golden years.

In Sooke, a beacon shines – a seniors’ cohousing project that addresses the dual threats of being able to stay in your own home and the isolation that can accompany old age.

Sooke’s Margaret Critchlow says: “There is a lot of concern about the impact of the silver tsunami from Kieran those of us who are growing older.” Margaret is president of the Canadian Senior Cohousing Society and a founding director of Harbourside, a soon-to-be-constructed seniors’ cohousing complex on the waterfront in Sooke.

Across North America, seniors in cohousing projects design and manage their own neighbourhoods. They create physical and social environments in which they flourish until the lights go out.

When Bird and Paterson visited, Bird was reluctant to talk, Neudecker said, but it was clear she’d done a lot of research.

“Ana needed to tie it up, and obviously she did a good job.”

If Anastasia Bird could ask her great-grandfather Leonard Horth one question, it’s this: “How did he climb up those rocks (at Curteis Point)?”

The 11-year-old has spent recent months researching her family history with a special focus on Horth who, along with his father Rufus and brother Brownie, were first responders to the sinking of the SS Iroquois near Sidney on April 10, 1911.

Twenty-one people perished in the disaster, including the original founders of St. Margaret’s School, sisters Edith and Isobel Fenwick.

It turns out the men used ropes and a horse saddle to pull people up the rocky bluffs near the Horth family farm in North Saanich. The first person rescued that day was Margaret Barton, principal of St. Margaret’s.

Bird found out last week she’ll be the first to win the newly created Lakehill Community Scholarship to St. Margaret’s, valued at $22,000 over three years.

The scholarship will carry Bird through Grades 6 (which she starts in September), 7 and 8, at a school she otherwise wouldn’t have been able to attend.

“Anastasia went to a lot of trou-

“Ana was only 10, so I didn’t expect her to understand what it would take. Her marks weren’t strong enough and I also told her I wouldn’t be able to afford it.”

But Bird persevered to be a better student at Millstream elementary, became a leader for Girl Guides and Sparks, and upped her commitment to basketball and swimming.

It paid off, but there was still the matter of the tuition.

“Ana was serious so we approached the school and they explained the different scholarships available, including Lakehill.

So we looked up the history of St. Margaret’s and saw that the (Fenwicks) died when the Iroquois sank. After a while it hit me, my grandfather (Horth) had a story of saving people from the Iroquois.”

It was game on then, as they visited The Sidney Museum and Archives. The museum didn’t reveal much about Horth, but led them to the major breakthrough they needed, the book The Sinking of the Iroquois: Fact and Fiction,

by Joan Neudecker of Deep Cove.

“Right away I remembered (Neudecker), she was a teacher and I knew her when I grew up in Deep Cove,” Paterson said.
