The story of Horizons Unlimited is enduringly romantic; two adventurers on their first date discuss what they want to do with their lives.

“Travel” says the future Susan Johnson, a quiet accountant whose hobbies include bridge and reading. “I want to go around the world on a motorcycle,” responds Grant Johnson, an adrenaline junky with accolades including a Canadian National Championship win for road racing and motorcross. “Why not?”

Susan simply asks.

Three years later, Grant and Susan Johnson purchased two BMW R80GS motorcycles and departed on an 11-year journey that would take them through 39 countries, covering over 100,000 km.

Circumnavigating the planet was just the beginning for the Johnsons, who continued their globetrotting adventure by creating the web-based motorcycle group, Horizons Unlimited in 1997. The HU website is an online community that acts as a vehicle to keep the Johnsons on the blacktop, as well as serving as a hub designed to connect, inform and inspire other likeminded travel virtuosos. Visitors to HU range from tentative riders who need a push off the edge of their own travel desires, to enthusiastic road veterans willing to share their hard-earned knowledge of life on the road.

The web site boasts over 7000 pages of international travel content and photos,

with over 900,000 user sessions logged per month.

First time users may be overwhelmed by the vast mountain of information available through the website so the Johnsons have broken down the process of turning what they refer to as “the impossible dream into an achievable dream” into a four step formula. One, go to Horizons Unlimited. Two, get inspired.

Three, get ready. Four, get on the road. The rest is mere details that the community website is designed to help sort out.

Everything related to a life of travel is covered within the Horizons online think tank, and if by chance more information is needed, a travelers forum with over 33,000 users from all over the world is available at the click of a mouse.

The fact-based bulletin board is an ongoing, openended discussion with over 50,000 threads grouped into 90 separate topics—the most popular being, “Travelers Seeking Travelers” thread which is used to set up meetings for those starting off on long motorcycle journeys.

And if this copious amount of accessible information wasn’t enough, Horizons Unlimited has been organizing unique bike rallies (which they call HU Travelers Meetings) on every continent save for Antarctica. Their first rally in 2001 was originally intended as a going away party when the couple decided to leave their temporary home in the UK. The social gathering hosted over 40 riders and quickly expanded out of the

Johnson’s small European style back yard, absorbing three other neighboring yards. The rally was a resounding success and a follow up gathering was planned in 2002, hosted in Pemberton B.C..

It is incredibly fortunate, given Horizons prestigious international recognition, that the Canada West installment of the Travelers Meetings tour has been hosted in Nakusp for the last seven years. This great rolling land is a haven for bikers of all riding styles and is, not surprisingly, the location of Grant’s 1984 inception of his scheme to circle the globe on a bike.

“Where do you go from here?” Grant smiles, “It is so beautiful through the interior, but you can’t keep riding the same roads, you have to get out and find some variety.”

The Travelers Meeting is an extension of the website, offering a plethora of information, demos and workshops, but is principally a chance to share the inspiration of the road by networking with other riders.

“Our mission,” Grant explains, “is to get people out there seeing the world—seeing it for what it really is. We really have issues with network news coverage and their depiction of foreign countries.”

This year’s meeting will host over 50 talks on a variety of topics that cover biking essentials and stories from everywhere a motorcycle can be ridden, on or offroad.

“We love coming here,” Grant shares, “and we are well received here. We only host meetings where our people like visiting and where the people like us visiting.”

Graffiti painted on several village businesses Continued from P.A. 1

Sometime around 3:15 a.m. on the morning of August 24, two young white men in ball caps made their way east down Broadway from the public beach to the General Store, leaving their mark on dozens of surfaces.

Graffiti vandals covered Nakusp with unwanted street-art in several permanent paint colours.

Most of the scribbles appear to be words, possibly signatures of those who were doing the damage. The purple, black, blue and green lettering

was visible Sunday on light standards, shop windows, walls and many surfaces at the General Store. Businesses hit include Overwaitea Foods, CIBC, Little Mountain Outdoor Gear and the Nakusp General Store.

Louella Allard of Little Mountain noticed some writing on the outside of the window, and removed it from the glass thinking, “It was just some kids being funny, you know, playing a prank.” She was not aware of the extent of the damage done throughout the village.

sor at Overwaitea Foods estimates that the damage caused there will cost more than $500 to remove. The vandals left several small tags around the building and three very large ones in spray paint, along the wall which faces the alley.

“This looks terrible. Our customers pass by here and they don’t want to see this. It’s unprofessional. I would like to see the people caught and dealt with.

Maybe get them to come and clean this up. This is not right, it’s a small community. Everyone has to take care of each other.”

Scott inquired on Face-

book to see if anybody is able help to identify the person, thanks to a photo she retrieved from security camera footage. The suspect is described as a young white male with a baseball cap, black hoodie and large round earring in his right or possibly both ears. Footage also shows a second young white male with a ball cap and a backpack. The different ‘tag names’ suggest the involvement of at least two people.

“Hopefully we can catch them and they can do the painting. The bank (CIBC) was hit as well and

they have a very nice camera in there,” Scott wrote on the Facebook group, Nakusp Communicator. A project to update and refurbish the front of Scott’s store has not even been completed and now they are dealing with removing senseless doodles from glass, vinyl siding and wood window frames. She also contacted the RCMP. “At this time, we don’t know who the individuals are,” Constable Mark Macaulay of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment said in an interview. He was investigating Sunday. Graffiti such as

this is generally classified under the Criminal Code as Mischief Under $5000.

He is urging the public with any information the local RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477) if they wish to remain anonymous.

The largest area of damage occurred on the outside of the public washrooms at the beach. At least 5 feet tall and more than 15 feet long, the spray painted lettering covers an entire wall of the village structure. Covering it will be a big project, and an additional expense for the village.

Education Misfire

With a little more than a week left before local students are supposed to return to the classroom, there seems little reason to think they will.

Despite insistence from both sides that they want an agreement reached by September 2, schoolyards will likely remain silent.

Indeed, as the clock ticked down Thursday, government and the teachers’ union were still trading shots, this time it was over Education Minister Peter Fassbender’s comments in the media that, according to the BC Teachers’ Federation, broke an agreed-to media blackout.

Of course, few believed that the two sides would find a negotiated settlement amid the lazy days of summer.

The trajectory has always been toward a final showdown — one that is still coming.

It is, after all, the government that holds all the cards.

The BC Liberals are early in their (strong) mandate, meaning they are better able to weather the public backlash over the dispute.

They have in their pocket a raft of public sector settlements that suggest a negotiated agreement is possible.

And while there are many who are angered by the government’s bargaining tactics, there are many others who argue the BCTF is asking too much and teachers have gone too far.

The government also knows that teachers cannot stay off the job much longer. Their strike fund is dwindling, and their resources are drying up.

And they know that those teachers who get fed up and leave the profession can be replaced by the hundreds of education graduates churned out each year by universities in B.C. and across the country.

Meanwhile, parents who may feel the sting of increased childcare costs should the strike continue have been offered the salve of a $40-a-day payment.

BCTF negotiators may be hoping for a legislated settlement, one that would allow them to face their membership as bruised but not beaten combatants.

But the fact is they have played their hand poorly. They have cost their members money that no settlement will recover. They have alienated their CUPE colleagues who suffer every day the schools remain closed.

And they have underestimated the will of a government weary of more than two decades of conflict.

There are 200 feet of two inch hose with nozzles and wrenches all ready to connect up with the hydrants. Besides, there are several fire buckets, all kept in the shed at the back of Edwards’ Place. On August 21, RCMP received a report of an individual occupying a car out at what is commonly referred to as the “Car Wash” site about 20 kilometres outside of Nakusp along Highway 23. RCMP dispatched an officer to investigate but discovered, “No criminal

Sean Arthur Joyce is a man of many talents; an established journalist for the New Denver based newspaper, The Valley Voice, a published poet, an author of historical fiction, producer, director and sketch artist, to name a few of his accomplishments. He was born in Kimberly, B.C. with Anglo-Irish-Scot background, however, in his midlife, Joyce was shocked to discover that his pedigree also included a branch stretching out from a little known historical group of British youth known as the ‘home children.’

These forsaken young boys and girls were rounded up from the workhouses in Britain and shipped to Canada in droves between 1869 and 1930.

Upon arrival, the children were transported across the country to western Canada where they were employed in homes as labourers,

some, little more than slaves working domestic and backbreaking jobs and often on isolated frontier homesteads.

Of the 100,000 emigrants, the majority never returned to their birth country, and instead settled in Canada to raise families of their own. Joyce’s research suggests that the decedents of ‘home children’ living in Canada today number in the millions.

However, ‘home children’ remain a chapter in Canada’s history that is unaccountably overlooked by the general population. There is hardly any mention of the anomaly in textbooks, there are no holidays or memorials dedicated to their memory and it holds no place in the general daily political or social dialogue.

There have been a few books published on the subject, notably by authors such as Kenneth Bagnell, Roy Parker and Joy

Parr, but the subject remains just beyond the realm of common knowledge.

After discovering that his grandfather, Cyril William Joyce, was a ‘home child’ emigrant, Joyce set to work bringing his own story, as well as others, to light by blending personal family narratives with historical research to produce an enjoyable, enlightening read. On September 19, 2011 Joyce officially embarked on a three-year research journey to unearth the ‘home children story’ thanks to funding from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and the Columbia Basin Trust. On May 15, 2014 Joyce’s book, Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest: Canada’s Home Children in the West, was published.

Joyce visited the Nakusp Library on August 22 to deliver a discussion on the books subject matter as well as read excerpts. Beginning with

Mobile Bottle Depot Set Up in Nakusp Trisha Shanks Arrow Lakes News

Since locally-owned HappyFace Recycling bottle depot closed its doors in the summer of 2012, villagers have been limited as to where and how many empties they can return at one time. Larger communities frequently have more than one depot to choose from and residents can return an unlimited amount of refundable containers.

Here in Nakusp, the major stores which accept empties are Overwaitea and the BC Liquor Store. Both have had to limit quantities due to insufficient storage. After more than two years without a depot, Nakusp and area residents can again bring empties of almost any sort and quantity to a new Mobile Depot which opened in July.

Village residents have been restricted to refunding a daily limit of 48 non-alcoholic drink containers to Overwaitea (larger quantities by prior arrangement with management) and 10 dozen alcohol containers at the BC Liquor Store.

Debbie Godtmark of the BCLC says, “Storage is just such an issue. We’ve had the challenge here of not being able to bring in our new stock because of the amount of empties in our stockroom.”

The odour from the empties is also an issue. Godtmark says she would love to see a bottle depot offered at the secondary school to bridge the gap between the consumers’ need for a depot and the challenge

she sees of small business owners who have failed at operating one in the area.

Her suggestion is that students could run the depot as a business project; learn how to keep books, practice customer service and the basics of how to manage a business.

“We need a depot so badly. It should not be a consumer problem but consumers here are hassled with the task of where to take their empties to get their deposits back,” Godtmark remarked.

In more populated centres, recycling for full refund is a service that residents can access conveniently. In B.C.’s rural and remote communities, transportation becomes one of the biggest issues to recycling if there is no depot located within the community.

Nakuspians have been stockpiling their empties or driving them to better served communities, such as Revelstoke, Slocan City or Vernon.

Michel Desharnais has been in the bottle transportation business since 2000.

Based in Castlegar, he has a limited contract to accept empties and already picks up from some of the local restaurants and businesses in Nakusp. Some may recall that he was also the driver who picked up the sorted, bagged empties from Wendyle Jones when Jones operated Happyface Recycling.

“I like Frenchie (Michel), he’s a good guy to deal with. He was just the contract-

ed driver and would have had to do what they told him to.” Jones said.

Jones indicated that Desharnais had no involvement in the closing of Happyface Recycling. Jones had contract renewal issues with Encorp Pacific (Canada) which was ultimately the reason that Happyface closed its doors. Encorp dictates where their drivers can pick up and only depots with current contracts are permitted to be served. This meant that there would have been nowhere for Happyface to return their large quantities of recycled containers from the public.

Desharnais and his son Ryan started the Saturday visits to Nakusp in July. They have a customer friendly environment which includes counter space, packing supplies and a canopy to protect customers from the weather. Despite not being able to accept beer bottles and cans at full refund value, he is happy to take any size of refundable drink container from juice boxes to wine bottles. That includes cans and bottles for pop, juice, liquor and wine but not beer bottles or cans.

“I don’t have the contract from Encorp for refillable beer bottles or beer and alcohol cans. I have a limited contract, so I stick to the other types. I can only give half on those so I’d rather just send people to the liquor store and get the full amount,” says Desharnais.

Genelle or China Creek?

Sixty-seventh in a roughly alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Genelle and China Creek are essentially the same place, although China Creek is the older name.

The earliest reference is in the Victoria Daily Colonist of August 30, 1896, quoting the Spokane Spokesman Review of a few days earlier: “Advices received at Rossland from the outlying districts of Murphy, Sullivan and China creeks are that numerous prospects upon which development work is being done are showing up wonderfully well.”

George Melvin wrote in The Post Offices of British Co-

lumbia that the name was “after the Chinese who gold panned there.” The Rossland Museum’s website suggests Chinese labourers on the Dewdney Trail had a camp at the creek’s mouth in the 1860s.

It’s one of six China Creeks in B.C., and according to the BC Geographical Names database, to avoid confusion with the others, surveyor W.S. Drewry renamed it Popoure Creek after railway contractor James Poupore.

It appeared that way on a 1915 map, but residents continued to call it China Creek.

(In 1974, the Genelle Improvement District was allowed to divert water from what the government called Poupore Creek, although the name is

not officially recognized today. Poupore is also the name of a railway siding that we’ll get to later in this series.)

China Creek was a polling station for the federal election of 1904, but only one ballot was cast. It might have belonged to James Fielding (1840-1913), listed on the 1898 B.C. voters list as a farmer at China Creek.

Clara Graham wrote in Kootenay Yesterdays that in the early 20th century, “Each summer we had a picnic, generally at Fielding’s Landing, at the mouth of China Creek.”

The China Creek post office opened in 1906 and operated until 1909. A directory listing the following year reveals the China Creek Lumber Co.

had established a sawmill there. The same directory contained the notation “Genelle — See China Creek.”

The Canadian Pacific Railway had by this time named its siding after the Genelle family (sometime spelled Janelle or Jenelle), who came to B.C. from Thessalon, Ontario in 1884. They operated sawmills at Nakusp, Wesley and throughout the Boundary, and supplied railway ties. Brothers Peter (1856-1939), Joseph (1857-1913), and John (1866-1904) were all actively involved in the business.

Why this point was chosen to honour them is unclear; the Encyclopedia of British Columbia claims Peter Genelle established a sawmill there

to supply lumber to the Trail smelter, but there isn’t much evidence of this.

The development of Genelle as a community is similarly murky. The first death

recorded there was in May 1910, but the second wasn’t until 1959.

Genelle was on the CPR timetable as of 1913, but by 1918 the civic directory noted it had “few local resi-

dents.”

The China Creek post office reopened in 1946 and was renamed Genelle in 1974. The two names, however, are still used interchangeably.

It may come as a surprise to many of us, but governmental statisticians predict that by 2031 in excess of 1.3 million British Columbians will be aged 65 or over, representing almost a quarter of the population.

Today’s seniors can expect to enjoy an increase in life expectancy and in general, better health than ever before. Choosing to stay active and living a healthy lifestyle is the key. About 30 per cent of the way in

which we orient our lives is explained by biology and genetics. In fact, we can reduce our risk of chronic disease and disabilities by remaining physically active, choosing to eat a healthy diet, living smoke-free and remaining alert to avoid sustaining a fall or related type of injury.

Never underestimate the importance of being socially engaged through involvement in one’s Seniors’ Organization or special interest clubs such as those which offer an excellent opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills or hobbies through participation.

It has been said that our local community thrives, owing to the active involvement of volunteers within any number of chosen groups or organizations. Volunteering is a natural fit for those ready to remain active and to give back to the community in general. The skills and experience that older persons have to share are highly valued, and in many cases, depended upon by group organizers. Why not give it a try?

On behalf of the Ed Smith family, we would like to thank the town of Nakusp for always welcoming us back home. Eddy was a home grown Nakusp boy who just loved the outdoors.

He built several beautiful waterfront homes as well as many other structures around Nakusp and area. Ed’s son Dustin brought his dad’s ashes back home for his final fishing trip. He is survived by his three children; Dustin, Jarett and Jason, his grandchild Jakob, three brothers and three sisters, eighteen niece’s and nephews, twenty two great niece’s and nephews. So here’s to you Ed; May you always keep a smile on your face and your rod always pointing down, God bless ya!

Bamber captures the beauty and movement of nature with pastel colours RYAN WILLMAN Arrow Lakes News

Sharon Bamber works exclusively in soft pastels and through that medium has developed a technique that unleashes her emotional reaction to wild subjects through vibrant and intimate colour.

Drawing on her background in zoology, Bamber makes a study through pastels that analyzes the anatomy, behavior and location of her subjects and brings them to life in a series of wildlife paintings being exhibited at Studio Connexions gallery in Nakusp.

Bamber, a local to the West Kootenays, is an international award winning wildlife artist, whose passion for the natural world is transposed into her vibrant snapshots of wildlife that have the power to stimulate all five senses. Her exhibit, entitled Wild Connections, is a marvel of work within an impressionistic tenor whose almost tangible use of colour and texture gives life and breath to Bamber’s subjects.

The collection is almost exclusively portraits of animals engaged in character defining behavior, skillfully captured as a visual synecdoche through the caring hand of

an entirely conscious artist.

Bamber has a self-proclaimed passion for the natural world kindled after her move to B.C. from Great Britian in 2006. Previous to her emigration, Bamber worked in careers involving zoology and landscape architecture, but after finding an abundance of inspiration in the wilds of the B.C. wilderness, she confidently switched vocation gears to focus chiefly on her art.

In 2013, Bamber’s painting, Daylight Robbery, earned her a runner up finish in the prestigious BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition based in London, U.K.. Bamber is also the recipient of several Canadian based awards through the Federation of Canadian Artists Open National Juried Exhibitions.

In addition to her resounding success as an artist, Bamber is also an associate member of the Society of Animal Artists, which is an organization committed to promoting artistic representation of the earth’s creatures and establishing new standards of excellence. The society shares an affinity with conservation initiatives by using exhibitions as an opportunity to

educate the general public as well as making contributions generated through art sales.

“This is Bamber’s third solo exhibit here,” Anne Beliveau of Studio Connexions beams. “I am so proud to showcase her work. She is a tremendous talent.”

Beliveau describes Wild Connections as a “beautiful documentary for the viewer, which Bamber has put on pause so the fine art lovers can truly look at a moment and admire the sensitivity of her work.”
