The IPE board members, volunteers and staff are happy to showcase 4-H clubs locally and around the province with this year’s theme, “Celebrate 100 Years of 4-H.” “We have been looking forward to this centennial as a theme for a couple of years because we knew it was coming up,” said Bryan Burns, IPE General Manager.

“4-H covers so many things that we will have a variety of different displays and there are lots of things that can be done with this theme for the parade. It’s all going to be good.”

4-H club members will be showing in the usual beef, swine, other animal and various other categories and taking part in the displays at the 4-H Agriculture Awareness Tent, including a celebration with a birthday cake. The 4-H auction Friday evening lets participants sell the animals they have raised as projects. Each year, the IPE makes a donation to a local organization with 4-H receiving the proceeds from the Sunday night rodeo 50/50.

“Be sure to come and see the 4-H Agricultural Awareness Tent by Gate 2,” said Burns.

Look for old favourites with some new venues and events this year.

Miss Rodeo Canada, a former 4-H member, will attend many of the fair events.

Kids World has been expanded and moved, with arts and crafts, live entertainment stage, a chance to take part in small tractor weight pulls, the petting zoo, and pony rides. The Kids Club will be there to help get

lost kids back to their parents. Lego Adventure has displays and an activity centre. Staff and volunteers have donated extra Lego pieces to the cause and Burns went beyond the call of duty, taking time from a quick trip to Vancouver to go and pick up a donation of Lego for the activity centre.

The Ram Truck Stage is the main music stage with more entertainment on the Community Stage. Get your tickets for the popular Ram Truck raffle for a 2015 Ram truck, with draw Sunday, Aug. 31.

The Iron Chefs are cooking again, this time in their own tent. The entries and displays usually in the Hassen Arena (Divisions 10-19) have moved to Nor-Val Arena and commercial displays will be at Hassen.

The Lumberjacks and Mini Chuck Wagons are back, as well as West Coast Amusement Midway with 30 rides for all ages and games, and there will be a variety of food vendors for that great fair food. (continued on page 4)

“The Rodeo Wrangler Tour is one of the top 10 rodeos in Canada with the Sunday Wrangler Tour Shoot Out Finals bringing the best of the best on the tour for a great show,” said Burns.

“With more than 2,000 exhibitors and 7,000 entries, and all the other things to see and do, we find more people are spending two or more days at the IPE.” Last year, 149,782 people attended, with a record 159,000 in 2010.

With only a few days to go, everyone is busy getting ready, including polishing the trophies ready to go out to proud winners again. The oldest trophy, Poultry Show Best Exhibit, has been awarded since 1923 and Horse Jumping Challenge Cup dates back to 1939.

“The IPE is a great gathering place in our community. People see their friends and it brings back a lot of memories. Some people remember coming as children and now they’re bringing their grandchildren. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy the fair and help 4-H celebrate 100 years,” said Burns.

“Welcome to the 115th!”

It is with great pleasure that I extend on behalf of the Board of Directors, a hearty welcome to come and experience the excitement of the 115th IPE. Where else can you do and see so much in just five days?

We invite you to “our Fair”, one of the largest agricultural exhibitions in Western Canada. Bring the whole family. Have some fun, meet some friends, create some memories, and get back to your agricultural roots. Enjoy some premier entertainment, great food, midway rides, livestock, poultry, and horse shows and much more. You will find something for every age at the IPE. Do your children know where the food they are eating comes from?

Or how and where it is grown? Or how often cows get milked? Find out by checking out the interactive 4-H area, the many exhibits in the barns, our show halls and in our commercial areas. We are proud to be able to showcase agriculture and agricultural education at its finest!!

We are pleased once again this year to be hosting the Wrangler Tour Pro Rodeo with the Calgary Stampede as the official stock contractor.

So grab your boots and hat and get ready for five action-packed evening performances under the lights at one of Canada’s premier pro rodeos.

The fair will continue to embrace the Family Fun atmosphere, showcase our agricultural roots and provide new and exciting activities and programs to meet the needs of our guests. Rodeo Announcer ~ Brett Gardner

Like many announcers before him, Gardiner’s Rodeo career began in the arena as a contestant. While competing in both the Roughstock and Timed Events, he gained an insight and love for the sport of Rodeo. It is that love for the sport and appreciation for the contestants that he tries to convey to the audience each and every performance. Gardiner’s distinctive sound, infectious energy and informative style has seen him climb the ranks of the industry and become one of the most sought after Announcers on Canadian soil.

An occupation that will see him travel from coast to coast 40 weeks of the year as he has quickly and firmly endeared himself to audiences across Canada. Brett has been fortunate enough to have received the Bill Kehler Memorial award on two

separate occasions during his intercollegiate career and in 2011 and 2012 received the industry’s top honour by being named the CPRA’s Announcer of the Year.

When not travelling the Rodeo trail Brett makes his home in Sylvan Lake, AB with his wife Jaclyn and their two children Grady and Hadley.

Dennis Halstead ~ Rodeo Clown

Dennis Halstead has been a Professional Rodeo Clown and Barrelman for 11 years and still enjoys being in the arena as much today as he did 10 years ago. Dennis carries that enthusiasm into the arena with each performance.

As well as a Rodeo Clown, he has been a City of Calgary Firefighter for 25 years. Being a Firefighter has helped him appreciate what he does in rodeo, especially his kindness towards children.

he fair always goes on, thanks to grounds foreman Don McLearn, his crew and volunteers.

Don McLearn, IPE grounds foreman, with pink beard and pink truck, the year the IPE theme was pink in support of breast cancer research.

“Everything is on time with the weather cooperating. We’re busy getting everything ready,” he said.

When McLearn, affectionately known as Mac, says everything, he means it. From spaces for the exhibits, animals and vendors, which might involve welding rodeo pens, fixing gates, painting grandstands and additional building, to general clean up and polishing, he sees that it gets done and often does some of it himself. He

organizes and plans crew jobs, like horse jumps, show rings, watering down the dust in the rodeo ring and moving tables He’s working for months ahead of the fair to get things ready and fair days see him up before dawn, available wherever he’s needed until after the rodeo stock has been put to bed and the lights are turned off on the midway.

“I see everything at the fair one way or another,” said McLearn. “And I hope to see everyone there. This community is very helpful with the fair, with donating equipment and time and ideas.

Everyone is so pleasant. It’s fun or I wouldn’t have been here for 25 years.”

Fairgoers are encouraged to thank Mac for all he does when they see him around at the fair.

The office staff members are also busy doing their parts to help things run smoothly.

Lucy Whitbread takes care of the exhibition entries and Cathi Harrison is in accounting, managing the gates and the prize money. Terry Hannah, in charge of vendor relations and rodeo ticket sales, has never missed a fair in her life.

“I was eight-months-old when I first came. My father was showing heavy horses and I’ve been involved with 4-H as a member exhibitor and leader. I look forward to it every year,” she said.

The 30-member board of directors for the IPE is also made up of volunteers. President Jeanne Noble Harter, who is in her third year as president,

has also never missed a fair in her life.

agility Rabbit Agility demonstrations and competitions are new to the IPE this year.

Rabbits are more than just cute faces.

This year, they show their sporting side in a new event at the IPE. Rabbit Agility has them hopping straight and crooked courses and doing long and high jumps.

Rabbit agility began in Sweden in the 1970s and spread to other European countries before coming to North America in 2001 with clubs and competitions in many centres.

Rabbits from the Vancouver Rabbit Agility Club and the Calgary Rabbit Agility Club will be at the IPE for the first time.

The record for rabbit agility high jump is 100 cm, set in 2013 by a Swedish rabbit and the long jump record is three metres, set in 1999 by a Danish rabbit.

RODEO ACTION CONTINUED For the last five years Emily has been trick riding on her two horses that she gives all the credit for making her dreams come true. Emily currently holds her CPRA and PRCA card and this is her third year in Professional Rodeo. She has ridden with the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls many times as well as Niki Cammaert Flundra and Sally Bishop.

She is very eager to travel to new countries and trick ride all over the world. She loves to learn new techniques and skills from other horse people and become the best horsewoman she can be. Emily loves to take all the opportunities and possibilities rodeo has to offer and is excited about the upcoming season!

Shelby is 14 years old and lives on a ranch outside of Wardlow Alberta.

She has been trick riding since the age of 8 and has been a professional trick rider since the age of 11.

One of the biggest highlights of Shelby’s career was being named two-­‐ time winner of the Canadian Trick Riding Competition. She has brought her fast paced performances to CPRA, FCA, and CCA events all across Alberta and Saskatchewan on her two horses Splatter and Smudge.

Shelby prides herself on having a difficult act that is sure to be a crowd pleaser. She also enjoys roping, competitive dancing, 4-­H, and helping out around her family ranch. Shelby likes the opportunities that trick riding and rodeo have to offer and is always looking forward to meeting new people.

Volunteer Gives Back

Hannah Out is pleased to see 4-H clubs and their members and leaders being celebrated as the IPE 2014 theme.

“4-H means so much to so many people,” said Out, an IPE board of directors member, who grew up on a dairy farm near Armstrong, married a dairy farmer, raised four children on the farm and continues to farm.

“I was in 4-H for 10 years as a child and raised pigs for my projects and also took part in the sewing and foods clubs. I had some really great leaders who dedicated a lot of time for us and so when I got too old for 4-H, I became a leader to give back. It’s a great experience to pass on what you’ve learned to young people. All of my children, who are now young adults, were involved in 4-H” While agricultural projects remain an important part of 4-H, there is now a

wide choice of activities, including small engines, photography, computers, outdoor living, woodworking, welding, and performing arts. There are now clubs in urban as well as rural areas.

Out says 4-H projects give young people a chance to learn public speaking and organizational skills and it helped her learn to speak up for things that are important to her and take part in her community. She received the 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award for her work as IPE director at the AGM in February.

“That was a complete shock to me because there are so many people who deserve that award and everyone contributes. It’s everyone working together,” said Out. “The fair has been a part of my life for so long. I remember going to the fair as a child. We would get out of school at noon on the Friday of the fair and walk to the fairgrounds where we would meet our parents. Then we would have lunch at the Anglican Church Dinner and help clear the table, then go and see the fair.

“There was always so much anticipation for the fair — to see people and the sights and the animals. It brings the community together.”

Out still looks forward to the fair. She shows in the Swine Division and last year won the trophy for her sow and litter. It takes some planning to have a sow and litter ready for the fair but pigs are obliging in that they can almost always be counted on to give birth three months, three weeks and three days after becoming pregnant.

“I hope everyone is going to be out to the fair if they can. There’s always something new but something familiar. I think that if the people who started the fair more than 100 years ago came today they would have to sit down and take a deep breath and get used to all the technology changes, then they would go off and look at the animals and produce and all the exhibits, including things they had never seen before. And they would enjoy it and see the wonder in it.”

They climb.

And they delight audiences of all ages every time out.

The West Coast Lumberjack Show returns to the Interior Provincial Exhibition Aug. 27 to 31.

“The grounds are packed for their shows, and we love having them back,” says IPE General Manager Bryan Burns.

The show is made up of professional lumberjack athletes, all of whom are either current or former Canadian champions in the various events, as well as an emcee to guide the action.

Events include log rolling, underhand and standing block chops, a hot saw race and, arguably the most entertaining event, pole climbing, where a pair of lumberjacks race up a large pole, ring a bell at the top then scamper their way back down to the ground.

The West Coast Lumberjack Show runs three shows each day, Wednesday to Sunday, at 1:00 p.m, 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. They are located near Gate 4 just across from Kid’s World and Nor-Val Centre.

On Sunday August 31st, the IPE will host the Wrangler Tour Shootout! The top 8 in each event (based on standings as of Dawson Creek Rodeo August 8-10) will compete in a one day one head shootout for an additional $4,000 per event!

RODEO 101 - YOUR GUIDE TO THE RODEO EVENTS

BAREBACK

This is the most physically demanding rodeo event.

Using one arm, the cowboy holds onto the rawhide handhold of a riggin (a leather pad cinched around the horse’s girth). The handhold is snug-fitting and is customized to the individual’s grip. The stress on the rider’s arm is intense as the riding arm absorbs most of the horse’s power.

A bareback rider will be disqualified for touching the animal or equipment with

his free hand, or bucking off before the end of the eight-second ride.

The bareback rider tries to reach as far forward as he can with his feet, then rolls his spurs back up toward the riggin. At the same time, he must keep from being pulled away from the handhold. The higher and wilder the rider spurs, the higher the marks.

is not required to move his feet because staying on these loose-hided animals is difficult enough. However, if a bull rider does spur, he will be marked higher.

SADDLE BRONC

BULL RIDING

Definitely the most dangerous event in rodeo, bull riding requires a positive attitude as a cowboy engages in a test of nerves against the bull.

A rope with a handhold braided in it is wrapped around the bull with a weighted cowbell hanging underneath, allowing the rope to fall free when the ride is complete. The rope is pulled snuggly around the bull’s girth, and is kept tight only by the strength of the cowboy’s grip.

During the ride, the cowboy tries to stay close up on the rope’s handhold to prevent his arm from straightening and his hand from breaking loose.

A bull rider is disqualified for touching the bull with his free hand or bucking off before the end of the eight-second ride. A rider

Rhythm is the key in this event. The rider moves his feet from the horse’s neck in a full arc toward the back of the saddle in time with the bronc’s action.

The cowboy must ride in a saddle built to CPRA specifications with a braided rein connected to the horse’s halter. The cowboy uses this rein for balance. Where a cowboy holds onto the rein is very important. If he takes too short of rein, he will be pulled over the front, too long he may be bucked off the back.

The rider will be disqualified for touching any part of the horse or his equipment with his free hand, losing a stirrup or being bucked off before the end of the eight-second ride.

STEER WRESTLING Timing, coordination and strength are prerequisites for a steer wrestler. The steer wrestler starts behind a barrier, which is a rope stretched across the front of the starting box that is tripped by the steer crossing the score line giving it

a head start. If the steer wrestler does not allow the steer a fair head start, a penalty of ten seconds is added to his time. The steer wrestler’s horse is trained to run by as the steer wrestler reaches for the steer. The steer wrestler then grabs the steer’s left horn, taking the right horn in the crook of his right elbow. As his feet hit the ground, with his legs extended forward, he slides the steer to a halt.

(The steer must be on its feet before being thrown.)

Using his left hand as leverage under the steer’s jaw, and the momentum of the running steer, the steer is rolled to the ground.

The steer must be flat on its side with all four legs extended on the same side before the official time is taken. This event requires an extra horse ridden by a hazer, who keeps the steer running as straight as possible. Control and speed are required from both horses as they wait for their cue to start, then cover about 46 metres in four seconds from a standing start.

LADIES BARREL RACING

Barrel racing is the only women’s rodeo event at the Armstrong IPE. As with tiedown roping, barrel racing requires close cooperation and teamwork between horse and rider.

In the barrel racing competition, contestants circle three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern. Time is marked with the use of an electronic eye timer. A rider may touch or even move a barrel. However, if she knocks over the barrel, a five-second penalty will be added to her total time.

TEAM ROPING

The two cowboys involved in team roping have unique goals. The first, known as the header, does just what the name implies and ropes the head of the cattle. The other cowboy, known as the heeler, ropes the heels or legs.

As with the other timed events, the team ropers start from the box. The header is the first out trying to rope the head as quickly as possible without breaking the barrier. Once the catch is made the header dallies and turns the steer left. This opens up the way for the

heeler to work his magic and rope the legs. The clock is stopped when there is no slack in both ropes and the horses face each other.

Penalties are added to the time if the barrier is broken or if the heeler manages to catch only one leg, or if the header makes an illegal catch.

TIE-DOWN ROPING

Tie-down roping is the most technical event in rodeo. It requires a unique partnership with a working horse and excellent hand eye coordination on the part of the cowboy.

The calf is always given a head start and releases the barrier with a breakaway cord when it reaches the end of that head start. If the roper leaves the box too early, he breaks the barrier and will be assessed a ten second penalty.

Once the calf is roped, the contestant relies on his horse to stop in a stride as he dismounts on the run to reach the animal, flank and tie three legs. While the roper makes the tie his horse works independently to keep the rope taught. Time is called when the roper throws his hands into the air signaling he is finished.

The calf remains tied while the roper re-mounts his horse and the time becomes official; arena helpers immediately move in to free the calf.

A great run is a well choreographed ballet. Any unnecessary roughness will result in disqualification.
