Residents get to cast vote on bridge proposal

Saturday marks the last chance for Trail voters to decide if the city is going to have a walking bridge.

Well over 4,000 Silver City electors have yet to cast a ballot in the referendum that seeks a greenlight from Trail voters to borrow millions to build a second crossing over the Columbia River.

From 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. the Trail Memorial Centre will be the polling place on general voting day, Aug. 23, and Michelle McIsaac, the city’s chief election officer, encourages all who have not yet voted to come out on Saturday.

A total of 951 people cast a ballot during the city’s advanced voting opportunities on Aug. 13 and Aug. 20, and just over 100 electors have chosen to vote by mail.

“We’ve received request for mail ballot packages from just over 100 electors who are eligible for mail ballot voting,” said McIsaac. “Many have already been returned, however electors have until 8 p.m. on Saturday to return them in order to be counted.”

Preliminary voting results will be announced on the city’s website by about 9 p.m. Saturday evening, including the number of “Yes” and “No” votes, said McIsaac.

Kidney walk Sunday at Gyro

One in 10 British Columbians suffer from some kind of kidney disease and the community of Trail is doing what it can to help.

Supporters, patients, family and friends are getting together with The Kidney Foundation of Canada at Gyro Park on Sunday morning to raise money and awareness for kidney disease in Canada.

Evening market attracts big crowd

The first-ever Evening Market on the Esplanade was a huge hit.

Vendor Krista Wynn from Soap At Home says she was happy to see so many people out and about in downtown Trail Wednesday evening.

“There was a huge turnout,” she said adding that the atmosphere was positive.

“It reminded me of when the fair is in town and you go to the food market. It was a really nice feeling. It had a really great community feeling to it.”

Wynn says she would definitely sign up to be a vendor should the Trail and District Chamber of Commerce and the City of Trail decide to host another one.

Norm Casler, executive director of the chamber, says

that another market could definitely be in the cards for Trail.

“You can be sure that we are going to be taking a look and having that conversation,” he said the day after the night market. “It is definitely something that we would consider for next year.”

Andrea Jolly, communications and event coordinator for the City of Trail, says she has already heard demand from visitors and vendors for another market.

“We clearly saw that it was a success and from what we've heard, the community wants more,” she said, adding that although the night market is a bit more challenging, logistically, to put together, the city will support another one. “If the market committee chooses to continue with

evening markets in 2015, we will definitely continue to encourage several food vendors and great music.”

Casler has also heard some feedback from customers and vendors reiterating the need for the next night market.

“The number one comment I got that stood out to me was, 'let's do it again,' and 'let's do it more often,'” he said.

The entertainment for the evening was performed

by Clinton Swanson and Friends and was a highlight of the night for some, including Casler.

“Frankly, what stood out to me was having such an incredibly good band there,” he said. “The band just brought a new ambience to the whole thing and it was just perfect.”

According to Jolly, the market wasn't only beneficial to vendors, but local businesses in downtown Trail as well.

“Many vendors sold out due to the high volume of customers (and) it was great to see some downtown businesses handing out coupons for in-store evening market specials,” she said.

“It had a great impact on the businesses downtown,” added Casler. “The businesses have already commented that more people were stopping by.”

Casler says he, and other market-goers, hadn't seen that many people downtown in a long time.

“A couple of people said they hadn't seen it that busy downtown since the Bryan Adams concert (in February),” he said.

“You can bring your bike, you can roller skate – we don’t mind,” she said, adding that the 2.5 km route is merely a suggestion. “We have a lot of renal patients, so they will walk half way and come back. The idea is just to raise money and awareness with the walk. You can go as far into Sunningdale as you want.”

For those that want to participate in the walk but haven’t gotten any pledges or registered already, don’t worry.

“We have corporate sponsors, people who sign up with pledge forms, or you can sign up on the day of,” said McKinnon, adding that it is possible to register online.

This year’s goal is to raise $25,000 and McKinnon says they are already one-third of the way there.

“We (fundraise) all the way until the end of September,” she said. “We have a lot of people who have friends and relatives on dialysis and are from out of town that will donate later.”

As a little bit of extra motivation to join the Kidney Walk, community members have donated door prizes and there is even a silent auctiontype bid sheet for a flight voucher. “(It is) a trip for two from Pacific Coastal that has been generously donated,” said McKinnon.

“It is worth $1384 and it is open ended. You can fly whenever you like and you have a year to use it.”

By registering for the walk, you are entered into a draw for the door prizes.

When the walk is over and stomachs start grumbling, the Kiwanis Club will be on hand cooking over the grill.

Castlegar

Celgar loses tax battle

Zellstoff Celgar has lost another round in court in a long-running dispute with the provincial government over the amount it owes in property transfer taxes.

The BC Court of Appeal has ruled the owners of the Castlegar pulp mill must pay the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue more than $4.5 million, while the company argued it should only be on the hook for about $286,000.

At issue was whether the machinery and equipment in the mill should be included in calculating the total. The company claimed almost everything could be dismantled, removed, and sold, but the trial judge found that most of the machinery was affixed to the buildings, and that removing larger pieces would be expensive and non-viable. Celgar appealed, but a three-member panel recently upheld the decision.

The Property Transfer Act imposes a one per cent tax on the first $200,000 and two per cent afterward on an estate’s fair market value.

Fraser Surrey Docks will soon be shipping coal overseas.

Port Metro Vancouver announced this morning it has approved a proposed coal transfer facility at Fraser Surrey Docks.

It would take at least four million tonnes per year of U.S. coal by train through White Rock and Surrey and send it by barge down the Fraser River to Texada Island for reloading to ocean-going ships.

“We take our obligation to the community very seriously, as we have for over 50 years. We understand our responsibility and will deliver on our commitment to ensure this project is operated safely and responsibly.”

The docks are located on South Fraser Perimeter Road, southwest of the Pattullo Bridge, across from Annacis Island.

Stranded fishermen ferried to safety BC Local News Stranded on a Fraser River sandbar, three dozen fishermen were ferried to safety Wednesday by Chilliwack Search and Rescue.

The group had waded across the Fraser to Peg Leg Bar, a popular local fishing hole for spawning sockeye salmon.

“They had waded across kneedeep water to get there, then the bottom of the bar blew out and they would have had to cross a stretch of river nine feet deep,” said Doug Fraser, search manager with Chilliwack SAR. “Maybe a very strong swimmer could have made it, but it would have been very risky.”

Instead, a Chilliwack SAR jet boat raced to the scene, equipped the stranded group

with lifejackets, and four more rescue vessels were used to ferry them back to safety.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said Fraser. “We’re just thankful that no one was trying to wade across when the sandbar blew out.”

Peg Leg Bar is located on the Fraser River, about 10 minutes by vehicle from downtown Chilliwack.

With the current sockeye run filling the Fraser, hundreds more fishermen on the still-intact portion of the bar watched the drama unfold starting at about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

“Everybody was OK,” Fraser said after the largest rescue operation in Chilliwack SAR history.

“We’re thankful for that.”

Quebec, Ontario want more federal cash

Regulator offers up changes to TV delivery system

THE CANADIAN PRESS QUEBEC - Ontario and Quebec are calling on the federal government to increase infrastructure funding because of the slower rate of economic recovery and job creation in Eastern Canada.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Quebec’s Philippe Couillard say they are looking for improved and stable funding that allows provinces to determine their own infrastructure investment priorities.

THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Canada’s broadcast regulator has issued broad new proposals that could dramatically alter how Canadians receive and pay for their television.

The proposals issued Thursday by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission include requiring cable and satellite providers to offer a basic service made up primarily of local Canadian channels.

The CRTC is also proposing a so-called pick-and-pay structure that would allow Canadians to choose individual channels, on top of a basic service.

And it suggests the price of that basic service could be capped at between $20 and $30 per month.

Industry Minister James Moore first indicated last October that he’d like to see more choice for Canadian consumers.

The government then laid out its plans to overhaul the country’s TV distribution system in its speech from the throne, which included a proposed “pick-and-pay” service structure.

Other proposals unveiled Thursday include requiring service providers to offer build-your-own channel packages or allowing them to continue offering the same packages currently on the market. “(Service providers) would be required to allow subscribers to build their own custom packages of discretionary programming services,” the CRTC said in a table incorporated in a new notice of hearing. “(Service providers) could still offer preassembled packages.”

At the same time, the regulator is proposing allowing local TV stations to shut down their transmitters - a move that might not sit well with consumers who prefer to get their TV programming over the air.

And it proposes allowing television stations and networks to count revenues from online or other delivery platforms toward their overall revenue base.

The CRTC stresses that it has not yet decided which options it will enforce, and is giving the public until Sept. 19 to offer comments on the proposals online.

A public hearing will also be held in Gatineau, Que. on Sept. 8.

A number of companies, largely in Eastern Canada, already offer basic service plans and “pick-and-pay” options.

‘Prince of Pot’ is a Canadian hero

I

t’s not often that I disagree with Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente, but her recent column on Marc Emery (Pot still fails the sniff test) triggered one of those rare occasions.

Unlike the “Prince of Pot”, I don’t use marijuana. I never have, and probably never will, even if it were to become legal for recreational use. But then, I don’t use alcohol either. Slowing down my brain just isn’t my cup of tea.

Nevertheless, I have been a staunch admirer of Marc’s ever since I first met him, about 38 years ago, long before he began championing pot legalization. Marc has been a powerful force for liberty in Canada on several fronts.

For instance, he helped legalize Sunday shopping by operating his London, Ontario bookstore seven days a week, back when it was illegal to do so. He even went to jail over that issue, after refusing to pay his fines. That four-day stint proved to be merely a practice run for his later five-year marijuana-relat-

ed imprisonment.

Marc challenged Canada’s obscenity laws by selling banned music tapes. He then racked up a freedom-of-speech victory by publishing a marijuana newsletter at a time when the Criminal Code forbade it. An Ontario court eventually struck down that law as contrary to the Charter.

Marc has also contributed to the welfare of his fellow Canadians by diligently reporting every penny of income from his marijuana seed business – more than $4 million cumulatively over the years – and paying federal and provincial income tax on it (at least, if you believe that those governments will spend that tax revenue on Canadians’ welfare, which is questionable. But I digress).

Canada has changed radically since Marc first set out to legalize pot.

There are now approximately 40,000 legal medical marijuana users, with some estimates saying there will be half a million in 10 years’ time. A survey released last week by the Department of

Justice showed that 70 per cent of Canadians want the law softened, either by legalization or decriminalization. Even the Fraser Institute (the free-market think tank whose name is usually preceded in media reports by the epithet “right-wing”) published a report a decade ago describing the benefits of legalizing pot.

Marc plowed all of his seed sale profits into funding the legalization movement, keeping nothing for himself except what he needed to live on. He made a large donation of seed money (pun intended) to help organizers in Colorado. That state is now one of two (Washington is the other)

that have legalized pot for both medicinal and recreational purposes.

Another 21 U.S. states and the District of Columbia allow medical marijuana. Four other states have decriminalized it, reducing the penalty for possession to fines, rather than a jail sentence and a criminal record. Even John McKay, the former U.S. attorney who prosecuted Marc, has changed his mind and now publicly favours legalization.

While Marc didn’t do this single-handedly, there is no question that he was a driving force in the movement. He is at least partly responsible for the fact that hundreds of thousands of people across North America now have legal access to a medication that helps relieve their pain and epileptic seizures. He can also take credit for keeping hundreds of thousands of people out of jail. He has achieved these victories at great personal cost, doing several stints in Canadian jails before his most recent U.S. imprisonment.

Wente said that Marc’s no hero, but I disagree.

He has shown exceptional courage and perseverance. He has made huge personal sacrifices. His actions have benefitted thousands, if not millions, of people. That’s pretty heroic in my books.

But what about Wente’s charge that Marc is “among the most obnoxious jerks in Canadian public life” and a “relentless self-promoter who’s compared himself to Gandhi and Martin Luther King”?

Yup, Marc talks a lot.

He talks quickly – too quickly for some people to grasp what he is saying. Sometimes he talks when it’s really somebody else’s turn to talk. But where’s the rule that says a hero has to be perfect?

These are minor flaws, all things considered, especially since most of what Marc says makes extraordinarily good sense, and is something that people urgently need to hear.

And I’ll bet neither Gandhi nor King were perfect, either.

City offers more clarification on proposed pedestrian bridge

The purpose of this letter is to provide further clarification of the facts associated with the proposed Pedestrian/Utility Bridge in response to what would appear to be inaccurate or misleading information that is being disseminated to the public in an effort to discredit the City and the proposed project.

The public is being asked to vote on a bylaw that would provide the authority to borrow up to $4.916 million in support of the construction of a pedestrian bridge that would carry the regional sewer interceptor line, a City water line and conduit for fibre optics across the Columbia River. The total estimated cost of the bridge is $9.816 million based on well-developed engineering plans.

It is emphasized that the project will only proceed if an agreement can be reached with the Regional District to jointly construct the proposed bridge.

The borrowing authority provides a financial limitation and therefore the City cannot give the regional district a “sweetheart deal” as some have suggested. The final economic analysis must work for both organizations.

Some are saying there are less expensive options and most recently a $2.7 million estimate for the regional sewer line to be run back to the Victoria Street Bridge has been touted as the preferred option by people who oppose the bridge project.

Unfortunately, this estimate is far from being comprehensive and has not been fully engineered.

The Regional Sewer Committee meeting was cancelled in August due to the serious concerns with the estimate and Regional District staff supported this cancellation based on issues that were raised and the fact that the costing was not comprehensive nor did it consider the feasibility of running the line through the City.

Further at this time the Regional District does not have formal approval to use the Victoria Street Bridge and considerable engineering costs will need to be expended if this option is going to be pursued.

The proposed pedestrian/ utility bridge project includes the immediate installation of a water line as part of the total construction estimate.

The need to have a second water crossing has long been identified as an issue that needs to be addressed; not only to provide redundancy but the second line will also result in a more efficient and effective water system.

The standalone cost to construct a second crossing in the future would be costly and the current proposal therefore provides a significant financial and service benefit to the City.

Finally, the construction of the proposed bridge will provide an enhancement to the City and greater region which extends

far beyond the very narrow perspective that is being advanced by the opponents to the project.

The public is encouraged to consider the project comprehensively including the financial and service advantages. Beyond this, Council has been working diligently on revitalizing the City and the construction of modern multi-purpose infrastructure would be a significant step forward. The municipal share of the project will be paid for by Gas Taxes and result in no property tax increase.

Council has been fully transparent through the process and has undertaken efforts to ensure that the public is well informed with respect to the proposal and associated impacts. There has been criticism with respect to the City providing this information but given the significance of the issue being advanced it is important that when people vote they are making an informed decision. It became evident that there was inaccurate information being provided to entice people to sign the counter-petition.

Council hopes that the public will exercise their democratic right and “Help Shape Trail’s Future” with respect to this one time opportunity to take Trail to the next level as part of modernizing and reshaping the community as well as constructing critical infrastructure.

Bridge questions unanswered

As one of the principles behind the petition that forced the bridge referendum I can state that we truly believed that the city would take a reasonable and principled approach to explaining the whys and wherefores of their decision to proceed without taxpayers say on the pedestrian-pipe bridge (PPB).

I expected deficiency reports on the old bridges condition, cost estimates and comparisons and a cost benefit analysis of all the options. Instead at best the city fathers and the supporters descended into what ended up being little more than a propaganda campaign for the PPB. The citizens have been bombarded with glossy brochures, misleading statements, another different cost estimate for the PPB and by far the worst action of all; labeling taxpayers with the right of questioning councils action as irresponsible, ignorant and misleading. One councilor even decried our actions as undemocratic and felt we should be denied our right to dissent!

As a member of council in the mid-90s I asked about the

old bridge maintenance.

Again I asked further questions in the late ‘90s and early 2000’s. Each time I was assured that all was well and not to worry. Imagine my surprise when the closed to traffic and pedestrian sign went up! I find it even more amazing that after 20 years or so of giving the old bridge a clean bill of health it is suddenly closed as it is deemed unsafe.

Where are the interim reports of required upcoming maintenance? You don’t inspect something like this and not warn the owner of up and coming problems!

It is, in my opinion irresponsible to let the maintenance of any structure not be done without clear and specific warnings to the owners. So where are these documents?

Secondly, taking no responsibility for ownership of the old bridge tops it all. Again and again the city refuses to take responsibility for a structure it purchased outright!

Any costing of the PPB must take into account the cost of dismantling the old bridge.

Any fine and removal cost once

it does fall into the river will dwarf a planned removal cost.

Why not look at a combined cost of the PBB and bridge removal and then compare it to an old bridge restoration? Only that will put the entire question to rest.

Finally why does the projected cost of the city referendum jump around millions of dollars? The bylaw that was opposed was for $6.5M, now council is asking for $2 million less. With purchasing the airport and slated expenditures there, the library referendum and the overwhelming question of a sewer upgrade costing anywhere from $50 to $100 million I think some very serious and definitive project planning is in order.

In closing I can only state that trying to sell this PPB project by saying there will be no tax increases because of this project is misleading.

The city manager has clearly stated that current spending practices are unsustainable.

You can bet there will be tax increases, really big ones!

Ronnie loved gardening, his flowers, his big tomatoes, huckleberry picking, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, ATVing, farming and cooking.

“When I travel around and announce off the stage that Buddy MacMaster is my uncle, everybody cheers.”

MacMaster was made a member of the Order of Canada in 2001 when he was formally recognized with helping lead a Gaelic renaissance, both in Canada and abroad.

Eva was born in Trail on February 1, 1918. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from St Joseph’s Hospital in Victoria, BC and continued nursing for several years in Victoria and across Canada, until returning to Trail in the 1940s.

She grew up in a large, extended Italian family where there was always room for one more at the table. Eva maintained that love of hospitality throughout her life, along with her love of music and the joy she felt with children. She spent her years from 1946 until 1991 managing Sandy’s Music and Record store - helping many young musicians become talented artists.

She is survived by her brother Sandy and sister Mary (Bill Ferguson). She was predeceased by her parents Raffaele and Mari-

anna Di Pasquale, sisters Evelyn Deering and Belgina Cusella.

She is lovingly remembered as “Auntie Eva” by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and family friends.

All of us will miss her greatly, but she will always be in our hearts and memories.

Strangers, friends make wedding a reality for cancer-stricken woman THE CANADIAN PRESS EDMONTON - A 28-year-old Saskatchewan woman who is battling terminal stomach cancer has tied the knot with the man of her dreams, thanks to the generosity of strangers.

Surrounded by a small group of family, close friends and their five children, Megan Wolfe and Josh Melnyk got married Wednesday afternoon at the posh Union Bank Inn in Edmonton.

In February, Wolfe - whose father recently died in a workplace accident - was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

Doctors say she likely has one year to live.

On top of that, the newlyweds - who are from Saskatoon - lost everything they owned earlier this summer when their house was flooded.

From the bride’s dress and flowers to a photographer and a restaurant for the reception, a total of $35,000 worth of funds and services were given to the couple.

“Incredible. Just very, very

delighted, very excited,” Melnyk said.

“I couldn’t be any happier. This is a dream come true,” added the blushing bride.

Shantell Scragg, Melnyk’s cousin and Wolfe’s maid of honour, wanted to help, so she began an online fundraiser.

What came next was more than she could have ever imagined.

“Things started just pouring in,” said Scragg. “It’s gone beyond what we could have ever dreamed about... Everything you can think of has been provided, even the liquor.”

After much planning, the couple chose to get married in Edmonton because that’s where most of their family live.

“We’re very honoured to be here and to have everything come together,” said Melnyk.

“I really appreciate everybody doing this for me. It really means the world to me,” added Wolfe.

The couple plan on making a permanent move to Edmonton in the coming weeks so Wolfe can continue receiving treatment.

Ohio diocese discourages ALS ice bucket challenge THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CINCINNATI, Ohio - A Roman Catholic diocese in Ohio is discouraging its 113 schools from participating in the ice bucket challenge to benefit the ALS Association, saying the group’s funding of embryonic stem cell research is “in direct conflict with Catholic teaching.”

Jim Rigg, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, told the schools in a letter Tuesday to “immediately cease” any plans to raise funds for the association or to instead direct donations to another organization that combats ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease that causes paralysis and almost certain death.

The Catholic Church relates the use of embryonic stem cells in research to abortion and says it violates the sanctity of human life. The use of adult stem cells in research is not forbidden by Catholic teaching.

“We certainly appreciate the compassion that has caused people all over the country, certainly including many Catholics, to be interacting and engaging in a fun way to support ALS research,” diocese spokesman Dan Adriacco said Thursday.

“But it’s a well-established moral principle that not only the ends be good, but the means must be good, too.”

The diocese said schools could participate in the ice bucket challenge, but any money raised should be directed to groups like the John Paul II Medical Research Institute in Iowa City, Iowa, which conducts “pro-life driven” research, according to its website.

Carrie Munk, a spokeswoman for the ALS Association, said her group largely funds adult stem-cell research but does fund one study involving embryonic stem cells using money from one specific donor.

She said all donors to the ALS Association can stipulate where their money goes and can ask that it not pay for embryonic stem cell research.

The group hasn’t heard of any other Catholic dioceses in the country recommending against donating to the group, Munk said.

Adriacco said the Cincinnati diocese’s superintendent wrote his directive to the schools after consulting with the Catholic Conference of Ohio. The Philadelphia-based National Catholic Bioethics Center affirmed the decision Thursday, he said.

Spokespeople for both groups didn’t immediately return calls for comment Thursday.

Don Clemmer, a spokesman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said that the group views the Cincinnati diocese’s actions as “a local matter” and that his organization has not issued any directives to its bishops discouraging donations to the ALS Association.

Study gauges cost of raising a child U.S. reports pegs cost of raising child to age 18 at almost $250,000 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON - A message for new parents: get ready for sticker shock.

A child born in

2013 will cost a middle-income American family an average of $245,340 until he or she reaches the age of 18, with families living in the Northeast taking on a greater burden, according to a report released this week.

And that doesn’t include college - or expenses if a child

lives at home after age 17.

Those costs that are included - food, housing, childcare and education - rose 1.8 per cent over the previous year, the Agriculture Department’s new “Expenditures on Children and Families” report said.

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - If you’re a kid in Atlantic Canada, here’s a reason to smile. According to a new survey, the tooth fairy is paying a premium for baby teeth in the Maritimes and Newfoundland.

At $3.46 a tooth, it’s 19 per cent higher than the national average of $2.80.

Even better, 35 per cent of respondents in Atlantic Canada said their children found $5 or more per tooth under their pillows in 2014.

Quebec children were the least likely to get a visit from the tooth fairy - 13 per cent received no money for their lost teeth. For those who did, $2.06 was the average rate.

The findings are from a telephone survey of approximately 1,000 households with children under age 13 conducted for Visa Canada.

The company is promoting the launch of an online financial calculator that allows children and parents to compare their earnings with other children from similar households in Canada.

Ontario reported the second-highest going rate for baby teeth at $3.21 apiece.

If kids in Atlantic Canada and Ontario save the funds, by the time they lose all 20 baby teeth they will have stashed away $69 and $64 respectively.

The average in the Prairies was $2.43 per tooth, but 55 per cent could expect to receive up to $5. In British Columbia, children got an average of $2.47 per tooth.

Housing costs remain the greatest childrearing expense, as they did in the 1960s, although current-day costs like childcare were negligible back then.

For middleincome families, the USDA found, housing expenses made up roughly 30 per cent of the total cost of raising a child.

Child care and education were the second-largest expenses, at 18 per cent, followed by food at 16 per cent.

Expenses per child decrease as a family has more children, the report found, as families with three or more children spend 22 per cent less per child than families with two children.

That’s because more children share bedrooms, clothing and toys, and food can be purchased in larger, bulk quantities.

It began innocently enough almost 50 years ago, but a stint as a house league baseball coach soon grew into a lifelong legacy of dedication and commitment to Trail baseball for the most recent recipient of Babe Ruth Baseball’s Roll of Honour.

Montrose’s Brian Pipes was recognized by the Pacific Northwest Region’s provincial commissioner Peter Stoochnoff with the Roll of Honour award on Wednesday in a special presentation at Butler Park.

The award is given to an individual, association or group that has made an outstanding contribution to Babe Ruth Baseball in the role of administrator, umpire, and/or coach/manager.

“Brian has contributed an awful lot to the Pacific Northwest local program, to B.C. Babe Ruth, and his dedication certainly set the standard very high for some of us,” said Stoochnoff. “It’s a great honour to be part of the program, and for Brian to set the pace for us to follow.”

For Pipes, the honour is one of many he has received over the years for his service in Greater Trail, but it brings a little more satisfaction due to its provenance.

“It was unexpected, it came as a surprise,” said Pipes.

“You’re honoured and you’re humbled at the same time.

When your peers recognize what you’ve done that says something.”

The 72-year-old retired Cominco worker has been involved in every aspect of baseball in Greater Trail, from player to administrative worker, and believes that awards like the Honour Roll should be shared.

“It’s not an individual award, it’s a group award, and the group is huge. I wish I could share this with all the volunteers, the young men and the young ladies who have crossed my path in the baseball end of it and the fastball end of it in Babe Ruth, and other organizations.”

It may not be typical hockey weather but two West Kootenay teams will be hitting the ice next week to compete in the Canada 55-plus Games in Edmonton from Aug. 27-30.

Heavily loaded with Greater Trail players, the Kootenay Glacier Kings’ 55-plus and 60-plus teams will represent B.C. at the national event, that includes teams from across the country.

“We leave next Tuesday, and have Wednesday off so we’ll be able to see our competition, all three teams that we play against . . . so we’ll make sure we take advantage of seeing who they are, and what they are, and what we’re up against, because we really don’t know,” said 60-plus player Wayne Florko.

Both teams have a bye Wednesday, but will play two games on Thursday; the 55-plus squad faces NWT and Lethbridge, Alta., while the 60-plus Glacier Kings go against Manitoba and PEI. The 55-plus team won gold at the B.C. Senior Games last year, while the 60-plus won bronze without losing a game to qualify for the national event, that will see over 600 volunteers and close to 2,000 athletes compete in 24 sports.

With hockey as one of the premiere attractions, opposing teams are rumoured to have built their teams around a few ex-pros like Calgary’s Lanny McDonald, so the level of competition will be intense.

“There’s some good players,” said Florko.

“We don’t know what were up against, we’re just making sure we are as competitive as possible.”

Many players on the Kootenay squads played with or against each other in the Western International Hockey League on teams like the Trail Smoke Eaters, Nelson Leafs, Rossland Warriors, and Spokane Flyers adding a unique character that is both competitive and fun on the ice and in the dressing room.

“I think guys that have always played like the competition and the real steep competiiton and that’s what makes it fun,” said Florko. “But what makes it even more fun is that a lot of us use to play against each other and now were playing together as a team and that is really neat. Lots of good stories and a lot of good players too.”

It’s the first time a Kootenay hockey team has participated in the Canada 55-plus Games, but Florko and Mike Ramsay hope its not the last, as numbers and interest continues to grow since they started organizing the Glacier King teams about five years ago.

“I would say in total we have about 45 to 48 players now, when you combine both rosters that have participated in either the B.C.s or the Canadians this year,” said Ramsay. “We’re hoping that the momentum in the East Kootenays particularly out of Cranbrook countinues to build.”

• I was taken aback a bit by the announcement one new Smokie had won an award based on solid citizenship and sportsmanship that is called The Richard Warwick Memorial Award.

Must be some other Richard Warwick, not the Richard, “Dickie,” Warwick who suited up for the senior Smoke Eaters (and the 1955 World Champion Penticton Vees) in the 50s - because that 50s version, while an effective player, fit pretty much none of the criteria (well, “determination,” is apt) upon which the award is based.

I did try to research the provenance of the award, which seems prestigious, but met a lot of, “not found,” messages, even on Facebook.

Just that the name caught my eye. Ask any of the ex-Smokie’s old teammates, there are still a lot of those around, about his makeup if you want to understand why it seemed an incongruous title for a sportsmanship trophy.

Dear Annie: Here’s my problem: 400-pound barbells dropped in my neighbor’s garage. The young couple who moved in next door describe themselves as “practicing athletes” and pursue this hobby every night for 45 minutes. Each drop of the barbells is deafening and jolts our home. I have talked to “the athletes,” and they don’t care.

Their two young daughters follow in their parents’ footsteps by running to ring our doorbell and then dashing back home.

They did it so many times that we had to have the doorbell disconnected.

We have asked the police to stop the barbell noise, but they tell us people in our subdivision can make noise until 8 p.m. Waiting for this agonizing racket every night, day after day, is enough to make me sick. My nerves are in shreds.
