CHILLY CHALLENGE

With the support of the Soda Creek Indian Band and Williams Lake Indian Band, the B.C. Liberal government ordered an independent engineering investigation and inquiry into the Mount Polley tailings pond breach on Aug. 18.

It has also ordered independent third-party reviews of all 2014 Dam Safety Inspections for every tailings pond at a permitted mine in the province.

The investigation will be conducted by a panel of experts that will investigate the cause of the Mount Polley Mine tailings storage facility failure, including geotechnical standards, design of the dam, maintenance, regulations, inspections regimes and other matters the panel deems appropriate.

The panel will also be able to order evidence to be produced, and the mines minister can require the company to cover costs of the inquiry.

The panel will provide recommendations in a final report by Jan. 31, 2015, which will determine why the tailings dam failed.

The panel’s recommendations will be received by the government and the Soda Creek and Williams Lake bands, and then shared with the public. It will be implemented by government as needed and where appropriate to ensure such an incident never happens again.

The panel members are experienced geotechnical experts with expertise in tailings management facilities.

The Soda Creek and Williams Lake bands were consulted on the terms of reference for the engineering investigation and will have a liaison to the panel. The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, and the Institute of Mining Engineering at UBC also provided input on the panel members.

Tailings review The chief inspector of mines has also issued an order to all mining companies to conduct a dam safety inspection for every tailings storage facility at permitted mines by Dec. 1, 2014.

Silent auction helps South Cariboo youth

Once again, the Fifth annual British Columbia Competitive Trail Ride-Cariboo Plateau held a silent auction to raise fund for local user groups.

This year’s recipient is the 100 Mile House Youth Zone Healthy Eating Project.

Pat Hayward, spokesperson, ride secretary and auction organizer, says this year’s silent auction raised $823 from donations received from all over the province, including the Okanagan, Kootenays, Vancouver Island, Kamloops,

Williams Lake and Alberta.

Local residents and businesses also donated.

Hayward adds she was amazed at how much support she has received for this local “grassroots event.”

Past fundraising recipients have included the OWL (Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation) project in the Fraser Valley, Mill Site Lodge, Fischer Place, 100 Mile District

Volunteers Gisele Poliseno and Peter Reid went over the data they collected at the pulse and respiration check during the annual Competitive Trail RideCariboo Plateau at The Hills Health Ranch at 108 Mile on Aug. 9.

The B.C. Farm Women’s Network will hold its 27th annual conference at the Ramada Inn in Williams Lake on Oct. 3-4.

The theme is Growing, Caring, & Preserving: Agriculture and Industry Working Together.

On Oct. 3 at 8 a.m., a bus will take attendees to Gibraltar Mine for a guided tour. After a picnic lunch on the Fraser River at Soda Creek, the tour will take in the Dunlevy Ranch and the Tolko sawmill.

Many guest speakers are on the agenda for Aug. 3, along with a trade fair, an AGM, and a dinner with silent auction and entertainment.

Men are also welcome, and folks don’t need to be actively involved in farming/ ranching to attend.

Leavitt, Clayton William It is with great sadness that the family of Clayton William Leavitt announces his sudden passing at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake on Monday, August 19, 2014.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Clayton at the Compassionate Care Chapel on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 11:00 am. Those wishing to honour Clayton by way of donation may do so to the Williams Lake Association for Community Living or the charity of their choice.

Wear lifejackets, PFDs when fishing The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) and the B.C. Wildlife Federation (BCWF) want to remind anglers that wearing their lifejackets is even more important than wearing their “lucky fishing hat.”

However, they do share one trait. They both have to be worn to be effective.

According to the Canadian Safe Boating Council and the Lifesaving Society, 80 per cent of recreational boaters who drown each year in Canada were not wearing a lifejacket or Personal Floatation Device (PFD).

Most drownings occur in small, open power boats, accounting for 60 per cent of these preventable deaths. A majority of these victims were males between the ages of 19 and 35, out for a day of fishing.

Many of those who don’t wear their lifejackets or PFDs believe that, since they are good swimmers, having them onboard and within easy reach is

good enough.

However, a lifejacket stored under a seat or up in the bow will be of no help when the unexpected happens, like falling overboard while trying to net the catch.

At Deka, ticket sales of 425 produced 152 fish.

Of 89 lake trout, the largest, brought in by Henry Burdeyney, weighed 23 pounds 4 ounces and also earned the Don and Marion Traill trophy for largest laker. The second-place laker prize went to Reg Klinger’s 19 lb. 9 oz. specimen, and Steve Farrell’s weighed 12 lb.

A South Cariboo rancher is getting another shot at defending her right to save her cattle by shooting a neighbour’s dog.

Earlier this month, a British Columbia Supreme Court judge had ordered a new trial for the owner of a ranch in Sharpe Lake (some 60 kilometres southeast of 100 Mile House).

Following her 2013 trial, she was found guilty of killing a large dog after admitting shooting it with a rifle.

The longtime area testified the dog was chasing her cows and argued she was justified under the Livestock Act. The Kamloops judge said the appeal can proceed, after deciding the provincial court judge did not fully understand the evidence and made errors in interpreting the law.

According to the Livestock Act, a person may kill a dog if the animal is running at large

Muscling into mobility Safeway, Muscular Dystrophy Canada join forces to help

The Safeway and Muscular Dystrophy Canada campaign Make Muscles Move supports those affected by neuromuscular disorders, and raises awareness about them.

Local Safeway manager Sean Watson says the store participates in this fundraiser every year.

It runs until the end of August and awards five Air Miles for each $2 donation at the till, he explains.

“100 Mile House Safeway is pleased to once again be a part of this worthy campaign that provides muchneeded assistance and equipment for people with neuromuscular disorders.”

portion of the “huge” cake was devoured so he knows it went well on Aug. 9.

The SMGP assists people with neuromuscular disorders by providing mobility aids – from wheelchairs and scooters to leg braces and lift chairs.

Essler has mitochondrial disease, and says she previously received a wheelchair from the grant program.

While recent improvements mean she does not need to use it right now, Essler says she will be wheelchairbound again within a few years.

The public was shocked by the tragic news of actor Robin Williams’ suicide on Aug. 11, including the many fans in 100 Mile House.

Williams, 63, who died by asphyxiation due to hanging, struggled over the years with sobriety, depression and anxiety, as well as early stages of Parkinson’s Disease, which was first disclosed

by Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider, in a press release on Aug. 14.

The Academy Award-winner and iconic funnyman was known to generations of moviegoers for his comedic and dramatic roles compiled through an extensive career that began in the 1970s. He starred in classic films like Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Good Will Hunting (1997), The Birdcage (1996), Night at the Museum (2006), Patch Adams (1998), Dead Poets Society (1989), Aladdin (1992) and Hook (1991).

Those titles, and many more, are currently on display in a special section at A & B Roberts Video on Birch Avenue in 100 Mile House, and they’re some of the ones customers are looking to rent most, says Christine Gallagher, who has been working at the local video store for more than three years.

Several actors, such as Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman, for instance, have had untimely deaths in recent years, but those didn’t have an impact like the news of Robin Williams, Gallagher says.

“The older generations are coming in and renting his movies to watch with their kids.

They feel it’s a piece of history.

“Robin Williams made everyone laugh,” she adds. “The saying, ‘tears of a clown’ really

Gallagher loved Williams in Awakenings (1990) in which he starred alongside Robert De Niro. She also loves Williams’ standup comedy and his breakout role in Mork and Mindy, a TV sitcom that ran from 1978 to 1982, where Williams played “Mork,” an extraterrestrial who comes to Earth assigned to observe human behaviour.

“I remember watching that on TV when it first came out. I’m of that generation. It was so fresh, so different.

We’d never seen anything like it.”

Gallagher mentions a customer nearly in tears standing in front of the Robin Williams display recently.

At the very least, she hopes the actor’s death will raise a little bit of awareness about mental health and the struggles people go through.

“What we see on the outside doesn’t reflect what a person’s personality is, which goes for society in general. He was very open about his depression and his demons and his addictions, but a lot of people just hadn’t picked up on it.”

DVDs are still the best and most convenient way for a lot of people to watch movies, and there’s something nostalgic to be said about the shared experience of browsing the aisles, picking up a physical copy of something, and maybe chatting the clerk up about it.

Local RCMP called to a multitude of MVIs

Police

report 100 Mile House RCMP responded to 112 complaints and calls for service during the past week.

Erratic driver Around 7:53 p.m. on Aug. 18, 100 Mile House RCMP received information from Williams Lake RCMP of a fully loaded lumber truck, which was driving erratically crossing into the oncoming lane and shoulder area, heading toward 100 Mile House on Highway 97.

Police attended and the member saw the truck driving into the oncoming lane, as well as nearly losing the fully loaded trailer into the ditch after veering onto the shoulder area.

The truck was stopped near Lac la Hache where the driver admitted to texting on his cell phone. The male resident from Alberta was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for e-mailing or texting while driving.

This incident is an example of the dangers of distracted driving while using electronic devices. This incident could have resulted in a serious collision given the drivers inability to maintain his lane of travel.

Police remind all motorists the use of electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle is an offence and carries a $167 fine under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Failed breath sample On Aug. 16, 100 Mile Traffic Services were first on scene after a complaint of a possible impaired driver having a collision at the 100 Mile Community Hall.

Upon arrival, investigators gathered evidence from witnesses, which led to the suspect driver. He displayed symptoms of liquor consumption.

An approved screening device was administered at the scene and the result was a fail, and he declined a second test.

He was issued a 90 day immediate roadside driving prohibition and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days.

While at the scene, his behaviour and that of his female passenger deteriorated to the state where both were arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

investigators determined the boy had been riding on the tailgate of his father’s vehicle without the driver’s knowledge. The young boy fell off the truck while the vehicle was being put in reverse and he was temporarily pinned under the truck.

The boy was assessed by ambulance at the scene. Fortunately, he only suffered a minor cut on his head.

The driver was cooperative with the investigation and charges are not being contemplated in this incident.

Driver change ploy failed On Aug. 14, 100 Mile Traffic Services observed

Young lad lucky On Aug. 14, 100 Mile RCMP responded to a complaint at Kokanee Bay Resort that a young boy had been run over by a vehicle.

Upon attendance,

a known unlicensed driver operating a motor vehicle in downtown 100 Mile House.

When the officer turned to stop the vehicle, the male driver parked the vehicle and the passenger got into the driver’s seat. The male was approached and his identity was confirmed.

He was issued a violation ticket for driving without a licence and having open liquor in the vehicle. His vehicle was impounded and towed.

Excessive speed On Aug. 17, 100 Mile RCMP received a complaint of a vehicle speeding and passing unsafely while southbound into 100 Mile House.

Police were able to set up radar for the suspect vehicle and it was clocked at 60 km/h over the posted speed limit through 100 Mile House. The vehicle was stopped and the driver, who was from Alaska, was issued a

violation ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.
