Harm reduction helped save Erica Thomson’s life. The people who reached out to her made her feel worthy and that she was not disposable. Methadone helped get her off drugs, and as long as she was on it, she was permitted to keep her daughter in her care. Today, Thomson is drug-free and works as an outreach worker for the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley (WRSFV). Katie, who didn’t provide her last name, is a recovering drug addict who cleaned up with abstinence and the 12-step program. She has a 13-year-old son with fetal alcohol syndrome to think about and no matter what, she doesn’t take up dope. The ways a person can recover from addiction are as vast and personal as the opinions on how to become drug free. Mission council heard varying viewpoints Monday during a public hearing on proposed amendments to a zoning bylaw to allow methadone treatment clinics and related facilities,
including needle exchange programs, in the district. A current bylaw prohibits needle exchange facilities in Mission, but council is considering lifting the five-year ban to support harm reduction strategies and to help protect the community’s vulnerable residents. Mission’s director of planning, Mike Younie, noted the district has not received any application for a standalone treatment clinic, like methadone, and any such proposed business would have to go through a separate process and public hearing. Needle exchange programs are not land use issues, said Younie, adding health services are regulated by the province and district bylaws cannot supersede a provincial act. “It seems to me the most successful way for people to stop using drugs is to cut them off, not provide methadone, which is addictive,” said former Mission mayor and MLA Randy Hawes, whose own son recovered from addiction through a long-term Continued on 3

supportive abstinence program. “Methadone is funded by Pharmacare and doesn’t cost Fraser Health anything.” Hawes said he couldn’t get funding for abstinence-based programs as an MLA, but encouraged Mission council to pressure the health authority to recognize and fund other modalities, including abstinence, in addition to harm reduction. “I don’t disagree that for some, methadone is the right treatment, but for others, it’s not.” Greg Blaine, an addiction counsellor at Harvest Discovery Home, told council to stay strong on the prohibition. “I’m not against methadone, I’m against how it’s distributed,” said Blaine, explaining not all physicians are trained to treat addiction. “We’ve turned it into a money-making product. I’m not against clean needles, I’m against how it’s distributed.” People don’t need to return old needles to get a new one and distributors don’t keep a log on who’s using the service, Blaine explained. “Clean needles kill people too,” said Blaine. “Harm is harm.” Katie suggested the district reach out to recovering addicts and ask what helped get them clean. “Harm reduction is recommended to you from Fraser Health as a necessary health service,” said Dr. Victoria Lee, a medical health officer with Fraser Health. “The evidence is clear. It reduces the risk of contracting diseases like Hepatitis C, and links people to services.” Fraser Health, Lee continued, supports all forms of harm reduction services, including detox and abstinence. Intensive residential treatment beds in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge are absti-
nence-based, said Fraser Health spokesperson Erin Labbe, noting treatment plans are different from person to person and some people who enter the facility may not be ready to abstain. “Harm reduction is how we work with people who are not ready to abstain,” said Labbe. Drug overdose rates in Mission are two times higher than the provincial average, according to Fraser Health statistics. “You need clean needles to reduce the risk to the public and the users,” added Lee, who suggested how the needles are disposed of can be another project for the Mission’s Health Community Council (MHCC). Currently, Fraser Health offers a needle exchange at the Mission Health Unit, and the Mission Friendship Centre (MFC) also runs one with funding from the BC Centre for Disease and Control. Pharmacies that fill methadone prescriptions or any other opioid substitution therapies also have a supply of needles as regulated by the provincial Health Act. There are also mobile vehicles coming into the community to provide the service as well, but Fraser Health doesn’t have control over these operations. MHCC developed the proposed harm reduction strategy with input from numerous organizations, including Fraser House, MFC and WRSFV. Mission council will take a month to contemplate the information presented before considering approving third reading of the proposed bylaw amendment. “I want more discussion about this while it’s on the burner,” said Coun. Tony Luck. Mayor Ted Adlem and Coun. Larry Nundal opposed the delay.

Mission Mounties caught up with a suspect who has been evading them for more than a month. Mission resident, Clayton Pierce, 21, was arrested Aug. 16 about two kilometres up the forestry road at the end of Caswell Avenue, near Shaw Street. Pierce, who is suspected of being responsible for numerous dirt bike thefts, was charged with two counts of dangerous driving and two counts of driving while prohibited. He was also charged with break and enter, aggravated assault, and wearing a mask while committing an offence. He remains in police custody until his bail hearing on Aug. 25. “Over the last several months, police received numerous reports of a disturbance caused by a male riding a dirt bike through city streets during the late-night and early-morning hours,” said RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright, adding the suspect routinely had his face covered with a mask, helmet, or bandana. “The suspect attempted to goad police into chasing him, and then fled through areas on the dirt bike where police could not follow, or in a manner which was dangerous.”

Mission has created a new zone to accommodate businesses with barge-loading facilities along the Fraser River. Four properties, one in Silverdale, two in the old industrial area of town, and one at the south end of Nelson Street, have been operating as legally non-conforming since a 2007 zoning bylaw change limited barge loading activities on the riverfront. The zoning amending bylaw was approved Wednesday at a special council meeting, two days after a public hearing was held. Numerous people expressed their concerns about increasing river traffic at the public hearing Monday inside council chambers. “The river is sensitive enough,” said Janet Chalmers. “It’s not a healthy situation now.” Mission’s eco-tourism industry is at risk and the danger of a spill from a barge, which could hold as much as 120 truck loads, is too great, she explained. Silverdale residents Bill Murray, Rosita Murray and Jamie Mitchell live near a chip-loading facility and asked council to help control the dust and noise that is already there. “The dust is unbearable,” said Bill. “Even with my win-
dows and doors closed, I have to dust every day,” said Rosita. Ryan Finch, project manager for Ledcor Resources, explained the business only loads wood fibre products and dust is worse in the summer because of the dry weather. The company has hired a consultant to look into it and provide advice, said Finch, adding Ledcor is also looking at ways to reduce noise. “We’re not taking the issues lightly.” Ledcor is located west of Chester street on the south side of the Lougheed Highway and is not one of the four properties benefiting from the new zoning. However, the company has applied for designation under the new zone in order to expand its current operations and include another barge-loading facility on adjacent lands. A separate public hearing for Ledcor will be Sept. 15. Mission’s director of planning, Mike Younie, noted there are no noise restrictions in the bylaw at the time, but given the information received, it is something the district will look into. Mission council will consider all barge-loading applications individually. The bylaw brings the grandfathered properties into conformity.

Isolated, frail seniors and people with mobility issues who live alone in a single-family home will be among those hardest hit by new Canada Post plans to discontinue house-tohouse mail service by 2019. While it’s understandable that Canada Post would want to re-visit so-called “snail mail� delivery and look for efficiencies in an era of digital communication, the national postal service shouldn’t discriminate against individuals who are unable to use the new community mail
boxes for one health reason or another. Canada’s national mail carrier deserves credit for appointing a dedicated team to work out adjustments and accommodations for individuals with mobility issues, but requiring a doctor’s note to prove need seems heavy-handed. Surely, there are other ways to handle this situation without going to such extremes. Many of those who need home delivery are likely to be in straitened financial circumstances with few

supports. It seems reasonable to take them at their word rather than requiring a doctor’s note to justify a special accommodation. Even Canada’s doctors are crying foul, arguing that this requirement will burden doctors and the already expensive health care system. True, there may be some people who take advantage of the situation without a proper screening. But rooting out these fraudsters might be more costly than simply going by the honour system.

Not everyone has room to freeze garbage I have lived in Mission for 37 years, have fruit trees, had my garbage outside my house, have compost, and have been aware of the bears in my area. I have never had a problem with bears getting into my garbage, my yard or eating my fruit, but since the Rot Pots came into affect the bears are in my yard, and we have seen them peering into the neighbours’ window. They also broke down my other neighbour’s fence. I think the Rot Pots
are bear bait. The District of Mission asks us to keep the garbage and Rot Pots in the garage, and ensure there is no pet food outside, or bird feeders, among others. According to your article, “Despite warnings, information campaigns and annual media attention, many people don’t heed the advice of keeping their garbage inside their garages or in the freezer until the morning of garbage collection.”

Editor: Re: “Farm changes a great leap forward” Aug. 15 edition. Tom Fletcher is confused about the Ministry of Agriculture’s consultation, which features a public survey. He mistakenly says it shows that changes in last spring’s ALR bill “have little or nothing to do with exclusions” of farmland from the ALR. That bill, which made exclusions easier in 90 per cent of the ALR (Zone 2), is now law. It’s no longer a current focus, in contrast to the survey about ALR regulations, which is open till Aug. 22. The simple reason
the survey doesn’t mention the bill or ALR exclusions is that they’re another matter. It’s also illogical for Fletcher to imply that those who wanted consultation on the previous matter would oppose the current consultation. If anything, many want more of it. To top off confusion with bad taste, Fletcher mocks MLA Lana Popham’s photo and bizarrely ties a survey question to Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward, which cost millions of lives. For many years, the church that we attend had a small leak in the slate roof; and this would allow water to run down inside one of the walls and cause plaster in one particular area to discolor and break away. And although there were numerous attempts to repair the leak and plaster over the damaged area, the leak would reappear and the discoloration and damaged plaster would return within a few months after each failed attempt. Every time I went to church and saw the damaged wall, I wondered, do we discolor and destroy our soul like this wall when we sin? When we show repentance, and ask God’s forgiveness for our sinfulness, we make amends with our Creator and our soul is repaired again. However, usually within a short period of time, the discoloration and breaking down of our soul begins, because although we may repent, we do not always make a strong enough effort to further refrain from our transgressions. Our pastor, being a tenacious man, finally saw to it that the roof was repaired properly, and the wall has remained clean now for nearly a year. Similarly, we should be just as tenacious about refraining from sin that is harmful to our soul.

The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) group from Abbotsford put on a barbecue for volunteers and staff of the MCC Mission Thrift Shop on July 29. The event drew MCC BC staff and several new service workers from Germany to show their appreciation. On that day, executive director Ron van Wyk, human resources director Marie Reimer, volunteer coordinator Bridget Findlay and several others worked with volunteers to sort, process and put out donations on the retail floor. pointing,” Chalifoux recalled, “but that stuff happens. It just makes you want it more for the next year. “This year, we had probably twice the amount of fitness and practice time. It was a lot of dedication that went into it. It was the best feeling in the world for me, because
we got to beat Ontario in their hometown.” Taylor was part of the B.C. bantam girls squad, and they also toppled the host province in the gold medal match, winning 4-3. The game was tied in the last minute of regulation, but B.C. got the go-ahead goal and their goalie sub-
sequently stopped an Ontario breakaway in the final seconds. “It feels really good,” said Taylor, 14, who attends Heritage Park Secondary. “I thought our team was very confident going in. We played as a team, we moved the ball around a lot, and it turned out as a win.”

In the span of one momentous week in July, Darren Rizzolo set the course of his hockey career for the better part of the next decade. First, the 16-yearold Mission defenceman committed to the Chilliwack Chiefs of the B.C. Hockey League. He’ll spend the upcoming 201314 season playing for a team out of Abbotsford’s Yale Secondary hockey academy, and then join the Chilliwack junior A squad full-time in 2015-16. Next, Rizzolo gave a verbal commitment to accept a full-ride scholarship from Northeastern University, an NCAA Div. 1 program located in Boston which plays in the prestigious Hockey East conference. In late May, he attended a camp in Los Angeles that was attended by a lot of coaches from college programs south of the border, and it was there that he drew the attention of Northeastern. “I didn’t even know you could commit this early or that they approached you this early,” he said. “But it’s a great spot, and I don’t see a problem with committing now. “It was just a great offer, and if I can get an education out of playing hockey, why turn it down?” Rizzolo, who stands 5’10” and weighs 175 pounds, describes himself as an offensive-minded blueliner who plays with a gritty edge. “I like to rush the puck, and I think I see the ice very well,” he said. “And I can certainly throw my weight around.”

Mission Raceway Park will be hosting two shows in one weekend. The Canadian National Open and the Smoke, Fire and Thunder Show take place from Aug. 22 to 24. More than 250 cars are expected to race this weekend in front of 5,000 spectators. Nitro funny cars, jet cars, wheelstanders, fuel altereds, nostalgia funny cars, pro mods and all NHRA sportsman class vehicles will be testing the newly surfaced quarter-mile strip. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Aug. 22-24) and racing begins at 9 a.m. Eliminations take place Sunday. The Smoke, Fire and Thunder races begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, and at 7 and 9 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets to the two big races are $15 on Friday, and $25 each day Saturday and Sunday. On a muggy, scorching hot summer’s day, what better vehicle than the aptly named Highlander for a high-altitude scenic drive to find some cool, crisp mountain air and sink a foot in a glacier. All-new for 2014, Highlander Hybrid is the fuel-efficient and eco-friendlier version of what Toyota describes as its mid-sized SUV, but it sure looks and feels bigger than most in this class, plus it can seat up to seven (or eight). Wider and longer than last year, this Highlander is also lower and, more importantly from a driving perspective, it has
a lower centre of gravity. There was a time when Highlander looked like an SUV, with an angular two-box design. Its styling lines have softened with successive redesigns and now if you put Highlander beside its Camry-based wagon sibling, the Venza, you need a second look to tell them apart. Not sure if that’s a good thing, but I do like its more car-like driving dynamics. Not far south of the Canadian border, Mount Baker is a glacier-covered mountain that rises 3,286 m (10,781 ft) above sea level, which is over 900 m (3,000 ft) higher than Whistler, the best-known mountain in BC. Mount Baker is also regarded as the second most active volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range, after Mount St. Helens, but there’s been nary a puff since 1880.The Mount

The 2014 Highlander Hybrid boasts more horsepower but burns less gas. Baker Highway (Hwy. 542) starts in Bellingham (exit #255 off the I-5), winds east through a number of small communities and offers some interesting side tours along the way, before it climbs steeply and ends at Artist Point (1,567 m / 5,140 ft.). This large parking lot, which is about 10 km beyond the ski area, is closed during the winter months and has spectacular panoramic views, plus a
selection of great hiking trails. The highway crosses the Nooksack River at Nugent’s Corner and tracks east, alongside the north fork of the river, through old growth areas in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. Allow about 1.5 hours of leisurely drive time in each direction. You’ll also need a ($5) day pass to park, which you get from automated dispensers at
the Glacier Public Service Center or at Heather Meadows near the skiing area. The Hybrid Synergy Drive system in Highlander uses a 3.5L Atkinson Cycle V6 gas engine, a high torque electric motor-generator and powerful traction battery. It boasts 10 additional horsepower (280 net horsepower) over the gas-only model, yet uses almost 30 per cent less fuel. Continued on page 19

Although Toyota has done an admirable job of masking it, Highlander Hybrid is a weighty (2,200 kg) vehicle, and has the usual characteristics of a heavy vehicle. It’s more than fine in a straight line and while handling is laudably predictable, it didn’t seem to like being tossed around on the twisty sections of the highway. Then again, that’s the norm in this class of vehicle.
SIDE TRIPS: Mount Baker Vineyards and Winery has a tasting room, offers tours, has a picnic area and is open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. It’s about 3 km east of the Nugent’s Corner roundabout, where you can also spot the historic Bethany Church (built in 1907) landmark. Nooksack Falls is just a short (and groomed) gravel road off the highway about 11 km (7 ml) east of Glacier, which is the last community along the highway. You do have to scramble over some (slippery when wet) rocks to get to a good (and safe) fenced viewing area. The water takes a spectacular 30 m (100 ft) plunge, so a close-up view is definitely worth the extra effort.
INTERESTING EATING PLACES: Anthony’s is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner in Bellingham. Situated in the harbour area it overlooks the marina and has views of the San Juan Islands. Great service, great fare (especially the seafood), all tables come with a view and the prices are very reasonable, compared to Vancouver. An after-meal stroll around the picturesque marina walkway also allows you to ogle hundreds of boats and yachts up close. Web site: anthonys.com The North Fork Brewery, Pizzeria, Beer Shrine and Wedding Chapel is an out of the ordinary and rewarding halfway (going or returning) restaurant stop on the Mount Baker Highway that’s known locally as “The Shrine.” Don’t be put off by the long name or its rustic appearance as the food is delicious and there’s an awesome selection of fresh brewed-on-site handcrafted beers. Eva Enns died peacefully on August 8, 2014 at the Cottage Pavilion in Abbotsford, at the age of 94. Eva was born on July 15, 1920 in Borden, Saskatchewan to Henry & Anna Goertz. She enjoyed childhood on her parents’ farm along with her 3 brothers and 1 sister. As a young woman she moved to BC with her parents, where she met and married Harvey, the love of her life. They raised their family in North Delta, and retired in Abbotsford. She was predeceased by her beloved Harvey, as well as each member of her generation in her family and in her husband’s family. Eva is survived by her children: Faye (Patrick) and John (Jill), and her grandchildren: Tiffany (Greg), Vanessa (Brian), Lucas (Sophie), Joseph, Nathan, and Bethany (Clayton).

He will be lovingly remembered by his fiancée Stephanie Penner; mother and father Leonard and Lynne Fry; brothers Travis, Shane and Ryan Fry; grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and an abundance of friends. He is predeceased by his grandfather Glen Whipple and uncle Harry Lepine. A Celebration of Life will be held at McConnell Creek Hall 35483 Hartley Road, Mission BC on Sunday, August 24, 2014, 1pm-4pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada or the BC Cancer Agency. She is predeceased by her mother and father, two brothers and one sister. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at the Mission Memorial Hospital for their care and understanding during our mom’s time there.
