ArtWalk a showcase for talent

hen Michael Kiss moved to the Okanagan after growing up in small town Saskatchewan, he wasn’t sure what his future would hold.

But as an emerging young artist enrolled in UBC Okanagan’s visual arts program, Kiss knew he wanted to use his creativity as a career.

What kind of artist he would become, and what kind of community he would find in the Okanagan Valley, was another question.

“Growing up in Saskatchewan in a small community it wasn’t the most open to the arts,” says Kiss, a week before he will debut several works at the Lake Country ArtWalk, Sept. 6 and 7.

“Out here it’s fantastic.

There are tons of people to talk to and I’ve been in contact with lots of other artists. People are fairly open about being in the arts community. It’s a great place.”

Kiss is a visual artist, working with stone, metal and bronze to create works based on natural elements that, when combined with the sharp lines of geometry, create an abstract piece.

Heading into his fourth year at UBC Okanagan, Kiss is bringing mythology into his latest works, such as the unfinished stone carving called Yggdrasil—the tree of life— which according to Norse mythology is where the god’s live.

“It’s a contrast of imagery,” explains Kiss. “I like to combine images and play with nature. Natural imagery, organics but also using geometry, the

hard lines of urban design.

“What I’m trying to do with this sculpture is abstract it slightly so it can speak to more people.”

At 21, Kiss’ artistic endeavours are just beginning; his career is in front of him; his creations evolving all the time.

This year he will take another step towards art as a career. He will display as many as 20 of his original artworks at the Lake Country ArtWalk, the biggest art show he has been accepted to and the number one art show in the Okanagan.

Last year he was like thousands of other art lovers as he took in ArtWalk as a patron.

This year he will be alongside some 300 other artists, laying his work out for the public to consume and possibly purchase.

“I’m excited,” he says.

“I’ve put a lot of time and ef-

fort into these pieces. I’m excited to get feedback from the public.

“When you are in university, you know the people who are viewing your work, other students and professors. But you don’t know the public, you don’t know what they will say.

You get a greater view of what people think of your work and that’s exciting.”

••• For the past 21 years Lake Country ArtWalk has been the single biggest gathering of artists in the Okanagan.

It’s a multi-arts festival that features work in mediums like theatre, dance, literary and media arts. It displays only original art produced by artists living in the Okanagan Valley.

It’s a festival that not only gives the public a great chance to take in one-of-a-kind art works but also motivates the

artists by bringing the creative community together in one spot.

To stimulate the artists, organizers have a policy that artists cannot show the same piece of work they’ve shown in previous years.

It forces the creation of new works of art and has led to a strong development of creative skill in the valley, according to organizer Sharon McCoubrey.

“Many artists come back to us and tell us that when the show is over they get back to work to create new things,” McCoubrey says.

“They go back and do whatever it takes to develop their work for next year.”

This year the Lake Country ArtWalk is expecting 300 artists and thousands of original artworks set up in four major venues all within walking

distance of each other: Lake Country’s municipal hall, Memorial Hall, the Lake Country Art Gallery and at George Elliot High School.

But it was not always such a huge event. The ArtWalk actually began as a way for the owners of Holiday Park resort in Lake Country to show off a private art collection.

“The owners of the Holiday Park resort had local art displayed in their sales’ room and would put on a public event,” says McCoubrey of the ArtWalk’s modest beginnings in 1994.

“It grew over the first five years to the point where the people that lived in the resort thought it was getting too big.

“When Holiday Park said they couldn’t do it anymore, Lake Country had just built

So after enjoying solid growth in its first five years at Holiday Park, the ArtWalk became a true community event in Lake Country in 1999 and it really took off.

The event is put on by a volunteer community group headed by McCoubrey.

Despite the length of the event and its growth, McCoubrey and the other organizers have kept the admission low, hoping to continue to help the arts community along the way.

Admission has always been just two dollars.

“We’re not about making money, if we can meet our expenses and put on a good event we are happy,” she says.

“We’ve kept our prices low enough to have it affordable for families and seniors and so everyone can come and experience it.”

Evolving from three to two editions a week T i The Capital News will change its publication days from three to two editions weekly starting the week of Sept. 15.

The current delivery days of Tuesday-Thursday-Friday will change to a Wednesday-Friday publication schedule.

Karen Hill, publisher of the Capital News, said the newspaper’s long-term commitment to the Central Okanagan will

not change, as we will continue to provide the best local news coverage both in print and online.

Hill said the Wednesday-Friday delivery frequency aligns the Capital News with larger newspaper markets in the Okanagan, including Penticton (Wednesday-Friday), Vernon (Sunday-Wednesday-Friday) and Salmon Arm (Wednesday-Friday).

Over the last several years,

Hill said all Black Press community newspapers, with the exception of the Vernon Morning Star, have gone to two editions a week, and most community newspapers across Canada that were three issues per week have evolved now into that two-issue model.

Tailings dam safety inspections in line with provincial policy

It may have been closed for nearly two decades, but Brenda Mine, above Peachland, is included in an order by the provincial government that all permitted mines in B.C. conduct dam safety inspections in light of a major dam breach at a mine near Quesnel earlier this month.

The dam holding back water in the tailings pond at the Mount Polley mine failed, sending an estimated 10 million cubic metres of waste water from the pond into surrounding, previously pristine water bodies.

On Monday, B.C. Mines Minister Bill Bennett, in naming a three-member independent panel to investigate the Mount Polley disaster, said all other mines in the province must inspect and report their findings to government and have

their findings independently verified by Dec. 1.

While no spokesperson for Brenda Mine’s parent company, Glencore Canada Corp., could be reached in Toronto for comment prior to press deadline on Thursday, it was confirmed that the shut-down local mine must do dam inspections each year as part of its permit for treating the water in its large tailings pond.

The mine completed its latest inspection at the beginning of July as a matter of course, and has thirdparty verification of its inspections.

To meet the requirement of the government, mine officials are writing up the company report now.

Annual inspections are required by all permitted mines in B.C. but the previous deadline for the 2014 report was March 31, 2015. There are 98 tailings ponds at 60 operating and closed mines in B.C. Brenda Mine used to mine mo-

lybdenum and closed in the late 1990s. It’s post-operation waste water treatment permit requires all precipitation that comes in contact with exposed rock at the former mine be collected and stored either in the open pit or the tailings pond.

According to the mine’s website, the permit allows treated water to be discharged into McDonald Creek, which flows into Trepanier Creek and then Okanagan Lake.

The treatment plant at Brenda Mine reduces the concentration of molybdenum in the water to less than the permitted level of 0.25 milligrams per litre from 2.75 mg/l.

In fact, the level of molybdenum in the treated water, according to the mine is just 0.06 mg/l.

The mine has had a permit to treat its water since 1997 and the permit was most recently renewed in January of this year. awaters@kelownacapnews.com

Judge and jury chosen for murder trial

The man charged in the killing of Kelowna resident Amy Jane Parkes will be tried by judge and jury.

Ryan James Quigley, 35, elected to put his fate in the hands of his peers at a Thursday morning court appointment. A date for his upcoming trial should be made known next Monday.

Parkes, 35, was reported missing April 1, after she failed to arrive at work.

Shortly before 10 a.m. that day, police found her body in her residence on the 3700 block of Lakeshore Road.

“The circumstances surrounding her death were deemed to be suspicious and the Kelow-

na RCMP Serious Crime Unit commenced a homicide investigation,” said Const. Kris Clark, at the time of the investigation.

At about 10 a.m., two days later, plainclothes of-

ficers located the suspect vehicle on the 500 block of Coronation Avenue and Quigley was found to be inside. He was taken into custody without incident.

What kind of parents take children to adult rated movies?

To the editor: After the last cheap night at the movies, I feel compelled to write.

What kind of parents would take their children to an adult movie Let’s Be Cops? The classification was 14A. Sex, foul language, nudity and violence was the extreme.

But I sat near a child that was possibly 9 or 10 with what looked like his grandparents.

The content of the movie was strictly adult and I felt quite uncomfortable watching their reaction. There must have been at least a dozen under-aged children in the theatre.

I know the theatre has some responsibility but what kind of parents are we raising today? They should be ashamed of themselves.

Unlikely get-away truck comes back home

I

nterviewing a crime victim has never before brought a smile to my face.

Not even when they’re terribly unsympathetic characters and I’m in the throes of a good bout of schadenfreude.

But Wyn Lewis, the owner of Vibrant Vines, is about as cheerful as any victim is going to get and I was grinning like the village idiot when he regaled me with his tale of woe.

Vibey, he explained, was stolen by a few people who Darwin wouldn’t have held out much hope for.

“Obviously somebody stole a vehicle, and that’s always bad news, but

Kathy Michaels of all the vehicles on the planet to be stolen, you wouldn’t think it would be that one,” he said.

It’s one flamboyant Suzuki. A wee little truck decked out in decals matching the wild bottles of Vibrant Vine.

So, it’s visible.

It’s also a bit more of a mascot than a functional truck.

Used only to traverse the space between the winery and the warehouse, Vibey would have had a slim chance of

a great escape, let alone a potential police chase.

Complicating matters for the crooks was the fact that there was only a litre of gas in its tiny tank, so a stop at a camera-laden post at a gas station would have been required for a real run for the border.

“So we knew it was going to end up somewhere on the side of the road, and we did find it up Highway 33 near Gaudy Road,” he said.

“But it was such a comedy. Even when they drove away with Vibey, they embarked on a journey through the orchards of East Kelowna, dodging trees, knocking over branches…and in the back of the truck, there were lots of beautiful apples,” said Lewis.

During Vibey’s week-long hiatus, Lewis said that he was inundated with

calls from people who thought they had seen the truck, or just wanted to wish them well.

So, all in all, it’s a happy ending to a story filled with mirth, community spirit and in the not-too-distant future, a party.

All of which Lewis is grateful for.

“You know what I just did, I walked into the tasting room and there were 30 to 40 people there, and I said, ‘Is anyone here following the story of Vibey?

Well, we found Vibey.”

Then, in celebration, he gave them a half-price deal on all the wine they were buying.

“That got a big cheer…and I think I lost a lot of money here,” he said.

Writer predicts Rutland hall is ‘doomed’ To the editor: Re: The non-sale of Rutland Centennial Park.

I would like to comment on your reporting which is entirely onesided. (Centennial Park Upgrade Gets Shot Down, Aug. 19 Capital News.)

Also I would like to comment on the column by Alistair Waters in your Aug.19 paper (Rutland’s Former Recreational ‘Jewel’ Left to Spiral Downward).

In my opinion, the city made a mistake in putting

the bus depot at the location in Rutland with no immediate access to Rutland Road.

The city, and the newly appointed Rutland Society president, Todd Sanderson, doctored up a deal for the city to obtain a right of way through the parking lot of the Rutland Centennial Hall. In anticipation of the deal, they fired the caretaker who lived on the property.

This caretaker, who is a friend of my family, lived on the property for

a number of years and managed to keep the drug dealers and users at bay.

He chased them off.

Our city opened a Community Police Station just around the corner, who are very ineffective when it comes to drug dealing. They even covered the Flea Market that would have to change its low-life title to Community Market to “upgrade” Rutland and already negotiated a deal with the city to move it to Roxby.

This city has managed to lose everything that is fun. No more Regatta, no more power boats, no more water slides, no more teen dances—you name it. No more midways except the one in Rutland, once a year on May Days.

I would like to predict the future of the hall.

Mishandled case leaves family to mourn forever To the editor: August 17, 2014 marked the 20th anniversary of the brutal murder of eight-year-old Mindy Tran right here in our fair city of Kelowna.

This case remains unsolved and left a great many unanswered questions as to just why the investigators took this case

in the direction they did.

The suspect, Shannon Murrin, that they chose to focus on was eventually acquitted by a jury that did not accept that he was indeed the one guilty of this heinous act, but police remain insistent that they targeted the right person.

I’m not at all sure the police focus was to ac-

tually find the murderer so much as to convince the public that’s what they were doing, so in that respect maybe they did indeed target the right stereotype in that it would appear that Mr. Murrin was a bit of an anti-authoritarian drifter, ill-equipped to defend himself and that made

him an ideal candidate for investigators to utilize in the hopes of boosting their image and add to their numbers of “solved” cases.

Luckily the jury saw through their nefarious tactics.

The case was poorly handled, at the very least, and the Tran family was

left with no sense of closure.

Let us not forget this young life that ended so brutally and left a family and a city to mourn forever, and a great many doubts clouding our confidence in our justice system.

ly says it shows that changes in last spring’s ALR bill “have little or nothing to do with exclusions” of farmland from the ALR. That bill, which made exclusions easier in 90 per cent of the ALR (zone 2), is now law. It’s no longer a current focus, in contrast to the survey about

ALR regulations, which was open till Aug. 22. The simple reason the survey doesn’t mention the bill or ALR exclusions is that they’re another matter.

Park society wants second chance at Centennial Park vote Alistair Waters ASSISTANT EDITOR

If at first you don’t succeed, try again.

That’s what the Rutland Park Society is doing in a second attempt to win enough support from its members to approve a deal for future improvements to Rutland Centennial Park and the adjacent community hall.

Park society president Todd Sanderson said a second vote will be taken by the society members at the organization’s upcoming annual general meeting. That meeting is expected to be held some time in October.

Sanderson said after the proposed deal with the City of Kelowna failed to win the required level of support it needed under the society’s constitution at a special meeting last week, negotiators for both the society and the city met to “tweak” the deal.

Following a sugges-

tion by a park society member at last week’s meeting, the proposed deal now includes a clause that says the park will continue to be a park in perpetuity, regardless of whether the Rutland Park Society exists.

The previous version gave the society a veto on any planned changes to the park as long as it was in existence.

Sanderson said the covenant for the park has also been rewritten in what he called plain language. As well, the society’s board is getting pictures and detailed descriptions of the traffic calming measures the city plans to put in place on the extension of Shepherd Road that would run along what is now the wide driveway into and out of the park property.

The creation of the road extension would not take away any parkland because the driveway is wider than the proposed

road that would run between the park and the hall.

The city has also agreed to write into the deal that the $400,000 it has already budgeted to improve the park, should the deal be approved, is just the start.

Sanderson said city hall is willing to put in writing that it is committed to completing the improvement to “the highest level of parks in the city.”

If approved, the deal would see the city take over the park and the right-of-way in return for $800,000 to the society. That would allow the city to improve the park, something that the society does not have the money to do. The society would keep the hall.

The $800,000 that the society would receive would be used to improve the hall, which Sanderson described last week as being “not up to code.”

The city wants to extend Shepherd Road out to Rutland Road as part of the deal because the road, to the east of the park, is home to Rutland’s new transit hub.

At last week’s meeting, where just under two thirds of the 102 society members who cast ballots voted in favour of the deal, the agreement was shot down because it required a minimum 75 per cent approval.

Curiously, only two-

thirds approval would be required if the vote was held at the society’s annual general meeting, according to lawyers for the society.

The society now has about 150 members and all membership will have to be renewed before the AGM. Sanderson said how that will be achieved is currently being looked at.

Sanderson, whose term as president expires prior to the upcoming

AGM, said he is considering running again. He said he was buoyed by the result at last week’s meeting, despite the failure to win the required level of approval.

This time, he said, the board will include the need for at least 67 per cent approval in its advertising prior to the upcoming vote. Prior to the last vote, the board did not advertise the need for at least 75 per cent, leaving many supporters of the deal

questioning why the 63 per cent support was not enough.

Opponents of the deal last week cited concerns about a road with buses on its being so close to the park and being a possible danger for children playing in the park.

That is why the society wants clarification about the proposed traffic calming measures and to know what the speed limit will be on the road extension.

Police gang unit faces cutbacks Kathy Michaels STAFF REPORTER

While funding dedicated to the province’s anti-gang police unit is being cut, don’t expect to hear about an impact in the Okanagan.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit continually works with local Mounties to deal with Kelowna’s ongoing organized crime issues and

will continue to do so in an unchanged manner, said an RCMP representative. That said, not all arms of the police gang unit will go unscathed.

Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens, Commanding Officer of RCMP in B.C., released a statement, noting that in order to make up the $4.2 million deficit, CFSEU BC was cut by $2.8 million.

“This will impact the number of enforcement teams and will be achieved primarily by reducing the number of Lower Mainland-based teams from six to five (12 positions), maintaining a vacancy pattern and reducing our assistance to partner agencies,” Cullen said. “Operational support will also be reduced.

However, to categorize this as a reduction to our

commitment to targeting any particular organized crime group or individual is wrong. Our efforts will continue.”

Within Major Crimes, a budget cut of $1.4 million was made and will impact the Special Projects/Unsolved Homicide/ Missing Persons program.

This includes the reduction of 13 full-time investigators within various projects.

Expect to see a familiar name take residence in the Best Western hotel’s restaurant space.

Until Aug. 11, the dining area at the greenest hotel in Kelowna was occupied by ORA. However, without notice, they left, throwing a wrench into operations.

“It’s unexpected from the hotel

standpoint,” said general manager Rosemary Paterson.

“We’re working quickly to have another operator in there.”

By next week, Paterson said they should have the pub up and running, and the restaurant should follow suit in early September.

Although there is a new lease operator ready to move into the space, there’s some paperwork to be completed before Paterson could reveal the new tenant.

Apple Triathlon president Richard Montgomery called last weekend’s 32nd annual race “the smoothest run yet” and is encouraged with how the event has become a fixture in many people’s summer plans—including the athletes, their families and close to 1,000 volunteers.

“What we’ve tried to do over the years is build this into a national calibre race, we’ve got people that are coming back, they know their positions and are able to leave their mark here,” Montgomery said.

“Also, our team is very good…and it just seems like we have the people that build their vacation around this race.

“Three generations of people now have come to the race, they come to the Okanagan for a couple of weeks and this is their big culmination.

“So it really is getting to be entrenched as part of our city’s fibre and culture. It’s great to see.”

The 2014 Apple marked the return of elite athletes to the race program after taking a year off.

From 2009 to 2012 the event served as the Canadian national triathlon championships, while

Once again, the race course—which was set up primarily for the sprint and Olympic distance races—drew accolades from the athletes.

“This (Kelowna) is my favourite place to race so I’m happy I was able to return here,” said Canadian Paula Findlay, the silver medallist in the women’s elite sprint.

Zaferes of the U.S., who was making his first visit to Kelowna, heartily agreed with Findlay.

“The course is sweet, I love the bike course, the run is lined with people cheering—it’s hard not to be excited about it,” said Zaferes. “Kelowna is a nice spot, I’ll definitely be back.”

Montgomery said he regularly hears other competitors making similar comments, which are both welcome and serve as motivation for organizers to live up to the expectations most people now have of the Apple.

“It puts pressure on the organizing committee because the course is really nice and we have to make sure we live up to the standards that are set,” he said.

“With all the people returning, we’ve been able to elevate the standard every year. It’s getting to have some polish on it and it feels really good.”

As for the 33rd annual Apple Triathlon and beyond, Montgomery said there’s no reason the race shouldn’t continue to improve and evolve—particularly because of the commitment made to the event at a community level.

“It’s totally a volunteer organization and that’s one of our big strengths, we want to have our city the best it can be,” he said.

“We’re not just a for-profit that’s going to move it if they can make more money somewhere else. I think it’s really important that’s it’s a grassroots community organization.”

And on a personal and celebratory note, Montgomery was able to step on to the podium for the first time at the Apple on Sunday, capturing the bronze medal in the men’s (65 to 69) sprint.

“I’ve always said if I live long enough that through attrition I’d get on the podium,” he said with a laugh. “This year I made it. It’s kind of exciting.”

Vibey the truck returned to relieved owner Kathy Michaels STAFF REPORTER

Vibey, the local version of the little engine that could, was returned to its home Thursday afternoon after what’s bound to have been a harrowing adventure.

“Vibey found! Appears in good health,” read the announcement on the Vibrant Vine winery’s website at 2 p.m.

The truck, which is mostly used to drive back and forth between the Vibrant Vine warehouse and tasting room, went missing earlier this week.

Winery staff keep the key in the ignition, but the key had gone missing at around 1:30 p.m. Monday.

The truck was driven through the orchard into the great beyond at around 10 p.m. that night.

“You couldn’t drive down the street in Vibey without someone calling the RCMP,” said Wyn Lewis, owner of Vibrant Vine winery.

“It’s the most recognizable truck in the whole of Kelowna. Vibey is all over Facebook.

“All the tourists are so enamoured with the truck, we have a long series of stories of it being loaded with wine, crossing Coquihalla and delivering our new Woops wine to Vancouver,” Lewis said.

Dryland farming put to the test in South Okanagan Judie Steeves CONTRIBUTOR

It’s a long-term experiment in dryland farming, but if successful, it could prove to be a harbinger of the future in the arid Okanagan, and at the same time, some spectacular flavours may result.

At the helm is Canadian wine industry pioneer Don Triggs, a founder of industry giant Vincor who left when it was sold to Constellation Brands in 2006, leaving behind his name on the Jackson-Triggs line of wines.

The Triggs opened Culmina Family Estate Winery last year on dry benchland between Oliver and Osoyoos, after meticulous work that included soil testing, water capacity analysis and detailed climate and topographical studies on the property.

The result: a 56-acre vineyard planted with a complex irrigation system managed by micro-blocks that are an average halfacre in size, controlled by 108 valves.

Soil probes provide data from every 20 centimetres at five different soil depths to determine increases and decreases in the water in the soil.

This data is compared daily to the previous year and is the basis—along with weather forecasts— for irrigation decisions, although the system itself is completely computerized.

“With these measurements we can apply only what each micro-block needs. That saves water and produces healthier plants,” says Triggs.

The big experiment, though, is last summer’s planting of 1,200 bush vines—400 each of syrah,

cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon with just a drip irrigation line to direct water to each vine— wasting none on the native sagebrush, bunchgrass and mariposa lilies which have been left between the vines.

They will be watered for just two years to help push the roots deeper for water, and then irrigation will be withdrawn, leaving the goblet-pruned vines to survive with just natural precipitation on this hot, dry bench overlooking the Okanagan River far below.

It’s very steep, so no machines will ever touch this dryland part of the farm, and it’s a spot that couldn’t be farmed under normal circumstances, notes Triggs.

If the experiment works, he believes the resulting flavours in the grapes and wine could be exceptional, even though the vines will be lower yield than the trellised vines surrounding them.

If successful, some of the dryland farming techniques used here could be adapted elsewhere in the vineyard, but it will be at least five years before they know and it’s a 10year experiment.

Western Canada conference hosted by Kelowna chapter Claire Smith-Burns CONTRIBUTOR

You may be surprised by how many people in the Central Okanagan are in hot pursuit of their family roots.

With more than 130 active members, the Kelowna & District Genealogical Society (KDGS) is

one of the largest and oldest genealogy societies in our province.

The KDGS is a charitable non-profit society founded in 1984, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Every second year since 1996, the KDGS has convened Western Canada’s largest genealogy

conference, entitled Harvest Your Family Tree.

This conference is a three-day event which will be held this year from Sept. 26 to 28 in Kelowna.

More than 200 genealogy enthusiasts are expected to attend from across Western Canada and the northwest U.S. This year, the eight

keynote speakers are coming from as far as Australia, Rhode Island, Salt Lake City, Regina and Victoria.

Well-known Canadian genealogy guru Dave Obee is a conference regular.

Besides being a prolific genealogy author, Obee is the webmaster of the CanGenealogy website.

He was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria for his work as a historian, genealogist and journalist.

His other hat is serving as the editor-in-chief of the Victoria Times-Colonist newspaper.

Maureen Taylor is an internationally recognized expert on photograph identification and genealogy.

Taylor brings together her knowledge and skills in history and research into family stories while giving insight into the invention and development of photography itself.

She hales from Rhode Island and is the author of several books, which she will have available to buy at the Conference Marketplace.

We are thrilled as well to have Helen V. Smith from Brisbane, Australia, the first time this well-regarded genealogy expert has spoken in Canada.

Smith is a molecular epidemiologist by day and a very busy genealogist at all other times.

At the conference, she will speak about DNA along with Australian and English genealogy.

Young is a project manager with FamilySearch, the leading-edge initiative spearheaded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to digitize and index collections of original records and make these accessible (for free) to family historians around the world.

A Canadian, Young also has a keen interest in WW II Canadian Naval Records and will be giving a workshop on that topic.

Radford spoke at our 2012 conference, a professional genealogist, specializing in Irish research.

As well as a workshop on Ireland, Radford will present some very unique workshops involving research strategy and the genealogical proof standard.

He will also talk about a project he has worked on recently—The 1811 Vulgar Dictionary.

He has spent several years examining the unsavoury descriptive language used by our ancestors, so this workshop will be entertaining as well as revealing.

Also on the guest presenter list will be May Chan, the prairie history librarian at Regina Pub-

lic Library where she maintains their local history and genealogy collections.

Chan is one of Canada’s leading experts on Chinese-Canadian family history, a topic she will address at the conference along with other genealogy issues.

Other speakers will include Ann ten Cate, of the BC Archives, and Xenia Stanford, a KDGS member, who is a professional genealogist specializing in Eastern European ancestry, as well as Métis and First Nations.

The Okanagan Regional Library has partnered with the KDGS to present three workshops Sept. 26 at the downtown Kelowna library branch.

The KDGS Genealogical Reference Library is located at that library branch and host an open house at the same time, to show how you can find free advice regarding your family history project.

That evening, the Conference Reception will be held at Okanagan College.

This will feature a Meet the Speakers panel, refreshments and a huge array of family history displays.

The Westbank Country Opry, the longest running live music show in the Okanagan, will stage a fundraiser concert for the Peachland Fall Fair at the Peachland 50+ Activity Centre, 5672 Beach Ave., on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Kelowna will launch the “It’s All Good” tour for the Andidos Cerveza, a 25-piece orchestral classic and Latin rock band.

Comedian Russell Peters brings his Almost Famous World Tour show to Kelowna for one night at Prospera Place on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 8 p.m.

Starting in 2008, Peters was one of the first stand-up comedians to self-finance, self-produce and distribute his own comedy specials and DVDs, with Red, White and Brown and 2011’s, The Green Card Tour LIVE from the O2 Arena.

The DVDs went on to sell over 350,000 units across North America.

His last special, Notorious was the first original comedy special for Netflix. Notorious was also supported by a fourpart documentary series, Russell Peters Vs The World. Peters currently has over seven hours of content on Netflix.

Peters has given away more than a million dollars over the past several years to various charities, from the Brampton Civic Hospital, to Heart House Hospice, Gilda’s Club, the MS Society and a scholarship at his old high-school, The Russell Peters North Peel Scholarship to send a deserving student to college.

The scholarship is now in its fifth year.

Final thoughts on comic genius and upcoming fundraisers

M

y column regarding the sad departure of Robin Williams garnered a fair amount of feedback from readers.

Tears, laughter, appreciation and anger—meaning, I suppose, it served its purpose.

A wise old editor mentored me that a columnist should be like a massage therapist— tickle, stimulate and occasionally hit a nerve or two.

Certainly Williams did that as an actor as the rash of his recent movies on TV has reminded us all of what an amazing and diversified talent he was.

As lengthy as my column was, however, it seems I never managed to make all the points I had intended—I concluded my oracle that morning knowing something was not quite completed about it.

My gracious friend Peter hit it on the head the other day when he said: “I figured you were going to say it in actual words since you wrote all around it, but I think so many of us can now see the Robin Williams in all of us.” Spot on, Peter.

With his tragic and shocking death, many of us truly did discover or re-discover the Robin Williams in all of us.

The part of us that lives in depression, sadness and fear, yet also understands the ‘funny little clown’ within us who finds a rainbow in the tempest.

I discovered this posting on Facebook a few days back, and thought it relevant to the Williams saga: “Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” That about sums it all up.

The 7th annual Chad Chretien Memorial Golf Tournament is set for the Mission Creek Golf Course on Sept. 6, an enjoyable time for all involved.

Chad was a popular, talented, young 18-year old who died in a motorcycle accident in July 2008. He had just graduated from Mount Boucherie high school. Funds raised at the event go towards the Chad Chretien Bursary fund for students of Mount Boucherie.

Over the past six years, the tourney has raised $13,000.

••• Here is some good news for many. I discovered last Saturday that you can ‘go back’ and it does not have to hurt (much).

Last weekend, I was joined by more than 100 other former KSS students for a 40th grad reunion and it was a fabulous time.

Many thanks to Neil and Lori Bifford (nee Dyck) who helped organize the event and decorate the Rod and Gun Club Hall.

Neil and Lori were high school sweethearts and clearly still ridiculously in love.

I trundled off to the event with life-time buddy Danny Thiessen and both of us were surprised with how many former students made the trek to the fun event.

Out of town guests included the likes of Ken Carter from the coast, Rob Gable from Edmonton and Sandra Kirkoski (Cundy) all the way from Hawaii among many others. Two former teachers Ian Middler and Brian Todd also helped rekindle memories.

What a fun night— thanks to all involved.

10th annual Night of the Arts. It’s hard to believe that Curtis Tulman and I held the first one that long ago. With speculation that this may be the last concert, we hope to have four or five of the top acts over the years involved.

Already pencilled in to play are Deb Stone, Keith ‘Papa’ Thom and a reunion of The Cruzeros.

Two years ago, The Cruzero boys planned to play but singer/mandolin player Barry Mathers table sawed his finger two days before the event.

Stay tuned for the names of at least two more acts.

Based on the number of folks already taking out nomination forms, we may just pack the Kelowna Community Theatre on the evening before the civic election.

Within the first two

days of availability for nomination papers, seven folks have already grabbed mayoralty papers.

Only current councillor Colin Basran has any council experience among the potential candidates so far.

While there is no stopping anyone from running for mayor I have always been surprised how many people seriously believe they can handle such a difficult task with such little working knowledge of what the job entails.

Highlander feels bigger than its mid-sized SUV segment parking lot, which is about 10 km beyond the ski area, is closed during the winter months and has spectacular panoramic views, plus a selection of great hiking trails.

Not far south of the Canadian border, Mount Baker is a glacier-covered mountain that rises 3,286 m (10,781 ft) above sea level, which is over 900 m (3,000 ft) higher than Whistler, the best-known mountain in

scribes as its mid-sized SUV, but it sure looks and feels bigger than most in this class, plus it can seat up to seven (or eight). Wider and longer than last year, this Highlander is also lower and, more importantly from a driving perspective, it has a lower centre of gravity.

There was a time when Highlander looked like an SUV, with an angular two-box design. Its styling lines have softened with

powerful traction battery. It boasts 10 additional horsepower (280 net horsepower) over the gas-only model, yet uses almost 30 per cent less fuel.

Although Toyota has done an admirable job of masking it, Highlander Hybrid is a weighty (2,200 kg) vehicle, and has the usual characteristics of a heavy vehicle. It’s more than fine in a straight line and

All-wheel drive is Subaru’s ‘secret sauce’

By Zack Spencer Subaru has been on a tear over the last few years, selling more and more vehicles to Canadians who the idea of owning a Japanese engineered all wheel drive (AWD) car.

AWD is the secret sauce.

We live in a country with inclement weather and the trend is to AWD as people experience it and want it in their next vehicle. If a car is offered with front-wheel drive (FWD) or AWD, most people will go for the latter.

Subaru provides this as standard equipment on all its cars, except the sporty BRZ that was co-developed

with Toyota. Subaru then layers on more power and sporty features into their compact car, the Impreza, to develop the WRX and WRX STI rally-inspired cars.

These have been incredibly popular, once again, because they come with AWD and the closest competitors do not.

Looks Back in 2011, Subaru introduced the WRX to look like the bolder and more powerful STI version, complete with bulging fender flares, hood scoops and aggressive attitude. This really helped to propel the WRX into another gear in terms of

sales. To follow up on this idea, the latest 2015 model too has an edgy design similar to the more powerful STI version. It is the same overall length as the last model but the wheelbase is longer, making bigger doors and the designers were able to slope the front and rear windows and crop the roof a tad, to provide a sleeker profile.

The front grille now has a more polished look but the wheel size is only 17-inches, making the car look too big for the size and track of the wheels. The STI only comes with 18-inch wheels that are too small as well. One

interior let it down. It was too bland, especially considering the top STI models can cost well over $40,000.

This 2015 has been vastly improved but has a few niggly items that could be improved. The dash is covered with soft touch materials, the centre console

Yes, a 6-speed automatic is still available but this new CVT makes the WRX easy to drive in town and it can fly when it is placed in the sportiest setting. Other than the new automatic, the most notable change is the much stiffer suspension and tighter steering feel.

The front springs are 39per cent stiffer than the last WRX and the rears are 62 per cent stiffer. This, along with a more rigid platform and tighter steering makes a very sharp feeling car.

It might be too sharp for buyers who live with very bumpy roads.

Verdict Subaru has done a good job with the WRX, the STI and the BRZ. Sporty design, powerful engines and AWD help but so too does price. The starting price is $29,995 and the most expensive WRX is $36,795.

Compared with the closest competitors, the VW Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST, this car is right on the money but comes with AWD, whereas the others don’t.

has a better design, with a three easy to use heat and ventilation controls. The rest of the dash has been cleaned up with a much better looking design and more attention to colours and textures.

The radio and accompanying Bluetooth system was horrible to pair with my Android phone and I had to do it several times after the initial pairing procedure to stay connected. The armrest for the driver is far too low to be of any use and the speedo and tach readouts are far too small to read quickly. Plus, the key needs to used to release the trunk, I couldn’t find a trunk resale anywhere on the car. What the WRX does have is room for all passengers with big doors and very easy access, with a bigger trunk (once you can get it open) than the last model.

Drive What the WRX is all about is providing a sporty drive and now it is available to a wider range of buyers thanks to a new automatic transmission. Subaru wants to sell more cars, not less, and by adding an automatic for a generation of buyers who might not know how to drive stick, is a major step. This is not your average automatic, it is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that has one gear but the ratio of the gear is changed. This, along with the standard 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo with 268hp, produces a surprising snap at all speeds.

Sun offense cooking heading to ’Loops Rookies kick off Rockets

With 163 points up on the board in just four games, it’s little wonder the Okanagan Sun offense has been gaining its share of notoriety around the B.C. Football Conference this season.

Fresh off a drubbing of the Vancouver Island Raiders last weekend in Nanaimo, the Sun (3-1) will look to keep the momentum rolling this Saturday night in Kamloops when they take on the Broncos.

Kamloops boasts a 3-0 record, albeit all three victories have been against lower echelon teams in Chilliwack (2) and Westshore.

Still, Sun offensive coordinator Tony Lindsay says there’s no reason for his club to let its foot off the gas.

“We’ve watched the film and Kamloops looks pretty good, they have a solid D-line and could put some pressure on us,” said Lindsay. “(Our offense has) come out of the gates fast, we’ve improved on every game, but we have to keep level heads. Every opponent is different and we have to be ready to go no matter who we play.”

After putting up 41 points on opening night against Chilliwack, the Sun managed just 20 the next week in Langley although, if not for a couple of narrow misses on long passes, the tally could have been much higher.

The Sun really hit its stride over the last two weeks, dissecting the Raiders in successive weeks—38-0 and 64-20—while combining for a staggering 1,032 yards in total offense.

Led by third-year pivot Cam Bedore, Lindsay said the offence is coming into its own.

“Cam has had some time with us now (three years) and with the tools that are around him, he’s developing some really good consistency,” said Lindsay. “We’ve had some of our receivers around for a while and

A glimpse of the Kelowna Rockets’ future is on display this weekend at the 2014 edition of Western Hockey League club’s rookie camp.

Close to 100 prospects have been split into six teams for the fourday camp, which began Thursday morning at Prospera Place.

Among the prospects were players the drafted in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, including firstround pick Jonathan Smart, along with other camp attendees, who are all looking to impress Rockets coaches and scouts. All of the players will return for another year of minor hockey in their hometowns.

Players attending camp were introduced this week to the Rockets organization, had a tour of the team’s dressing room and heard from GM Bruce Hamilton as well as new head coach Dan Lambert.

“The only thing I ask is that you play hard,” said Hamilton. “Don’t wait until Sunday to show us how you can play. Start showing us tomorrow.

“We want you guys to compete hard every shift,” said Lambert. “We want guys that compete, have good body language and respect the game of hockey.”

Among the prospects were the Rockets drafted players, however Hamilton said every player entered the camp with a shot to make the team.

“Starting (Thursday) everyone is on the same page,” said Hamilton.

“Shea Weber, Duncan Keith and Josh Gorges were all walk-on players.

Dillabaugh signed with the Kings’ this season in a full-time role as the club’s overseer of goaltender development, a job he has held part-time for eight years. The former Rockets’ player was a member of the WHL team’s coaching staff for 11 seasons, before resigning this summer.

He last brought the Stanley Cup to Kelowna in 2012.

Local players see the heart of baseball in Dominican Four Okanagan baseball players have returned from the Dominican Republic where they suited up for Team Canada in the Latin America Baseball Challenge (LABC).

James Fisher from the Okanagan A’s, Luigi Russo from Rutland Minor Baseball, Brad Hamilton from Kelowna Minor and Landon Currie of Vernon played in an eight-team tournament in the Dominican Republic.

They flew a total of

46 hours there and back, played in the tournament and handed out used baseball equipment to those in need in the Dominican.

“This trip gave the boys the opportunity to see grassroots baseball being played and kids playing for the love of the game,” said parent Lee Hamilton.

“Whether these kids from the Dominican were winning or losing they laughed, smiled and congratulated themselves

and our boys during these games. It was a real treat to see these kids play as not only were they talented but great sportsmanship was displayed at all times.”

The fields the tournament was held on were not the same standards as the Canadian kids were used with conditions well below the standards of fields in Canada. Some fields had rolled up shirts or stuffed potato sacks for bases. They were not level

and the teams just showed up and played without complaint, said Hamilton.

“They played in one of the poorest parts of Santo Domingo which was a very humbling experience,” he said. “Our boys learned quite a lot during these days and have come back very appreciative of their country and ability to play ball on fields that are well maintained.”

The team also experienced some major league baseball facilities in the

Dominican, a hotbed of baseball talent and a place where major league teams have established training facilities. The Team Canada players got to play on the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets fields.

In the tournament the Canadian team far exceeded expectations by going 3-1 in round robin play before losing in the semi-finals coming fourth overall in an eight-team tournament.

I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Huber nets gold medal in 100 IM race

Ogopogo Swim Club members turned in a solid performance at the B.C. summer provincial championships in Kamloops last weekend, winning 11 medals and breaking 13 club records.

Flyn Huber led the way in the division 2 boys category breaking four club records and winning four medals along the way. Huber, took the gold in 100 IM bettering his own club record by three seconds clocking a time of 1:20.83 He also bettered his own records in 50 back and 50 fly swimming to silver and bronze medals. Huber also broke the 50 freestyle club record clocking a time of 32.

Haight teamed up with kennedy Dickie, Rachel Schueler and Michelle Kraetzer to take bronze in the division four female 200 medley relay breaking the club record by six seconds. Kraetzer swam a best time in the freestyle anchor leg to help the team reach the podium.

On the boys side, Cameron McInnes, Matthew McDonald, Ehren Woodward and Carter Fortney broke the division four medley relay record by eight seconds and took bronze. All four boys swam to best times, and Ehren Woodward took five seconds on his 50 breaststroke time to help the team secure third. The division

six team consisting of Randi Thompson, Emalie Schuler, Madison Dickie, and Denby Huber took bronze as well. Kennedy Dickie, Rachel Schueler, Makenna Haight and Marli Gallagher teamed up to take bronze in the 200 freestyle relay in record time.

Other outstanding results saw Rachel McInnes (Div. 3) better her times in everything she swam and qualify for consolation finals in all of her races.

Kylie Haight swam to two best times and finished seventh in division two 50 fly. Denby Huber swam to a best of 1:12.60 in division five 100 backstroke finishing fourth. Braelyn Cutforth swam in three consolation finals in the Div. 1 category.

MCCREADY, LINDA HELEN Passed away peacefully with family by her side on August 18, 2014 at the age of 72. Survived by her loving family, daughter Debbie McCready (Gardner Joe) of Calgary, son Ken (Michele) McCready of Kelowna, five grandchildren Graham Joe, Nicole Joe, Alayna McCready, Kaylie McCready and Michael McCready; two sisters: Mary-Lou Brien (John Sereda) of West Vancouver and Elaine Powell of North Vancouver.

Predeceased by her husband Ken and parents Patrick and Frances Brien.

Linda and Ken moved to Kelowna from Vancouver in 1964.

With a few years off to raise her children, Linda worked as a Registered Nurse at Kelowna General Hospital until she retired in 2003 at the age of 62. She was a special nurse who touched many people over the years with her kindness and tender loving care. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who cared deeply for her family. She will be missed and forever loved.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 27th at 11:00 am at Springfield Funeral Home Family Centre, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC, with Rev. Malcolm Petch officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of BC, Suite 307-1664 Richter Street, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 8N3.

Inez Helen Currie, nee, Love was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug 10, 2014 in her 96th year. Helen is survived by her loving family, a son Bruce (Bobbie) and granddaughters Meghan and Tanya (Brendan). Helen was born Sept 1, 1918 in Oyen, Alberta. She attended business college in Saskatoon in 1935 where she trained in bookkeeping. She married John Arthur (Art) in 1942 in Saskatoon.

During the war, Helen lived in Victoria, Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa all locations where Art was stationed. After the war in 1946 they moved to Vonda, Sask. where they welcomed the birth of their two sons, Bruce and Glen. In 1955 the family moved to Kitimat, B.C. where Helen became a travel agent at Kitimat Travel and Art became Municipal Manager. In 1976 Helen established her own travel agency, “Wings Travel” in Kitimat. Her position as a travel agent brought a wonderful opportunity to travel the world. In 1977 they retired to Kelowna, B.C. for the summers and to Mesa, Arizona in the winters, where she enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. Helen instilled the love of culture, history and travel into her two granddaughters. Sadly predeceased by husband John Arthur (Art) Currie (2011), son Glen (1970), her father John Love, mother Catherine Love, and seven sisters, Winnie Grey, Catherine Lockhart, Dorothy Lapp, Jo Grant, Jen McLeod, Ruth McLean and Vi Campbell. Private service at Helen’s request. Special thanks to Shirley Foster who was at Helen’s bedside most of the nights during her last few weeks, and to all the caring staff at Hospice House. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the charity of your choice.

Heat squad preps for inaugural Can West season

On Saturday the Heat and the CCAA bronze medalists from 2013, the Douglas College Royals, battled to a 1-1 draw, and on Sunday UBC Okanagan dismissed the Langara Falcons by a score of 2-1.

“I’m happy with the

weekend.,” said Zanatta.

“The two training games worked well. It gave all players a chance to play and a chance for the coaches to see what they can do.” Dante added how he was able to see how the new guys fit in, explaining that by the end

of the weekend his coaching staff had a good idea on some possible lineup combinations and on what the new guys can bring in different spots.

Meanwhile, the Heat women played a pair of games Saturday in Washington.

Taking a tour of unH2O xeriscape garden is a late summer treat There are five theme gardens.

The Butterfly Garden and the Ornamental Grass Garden have been receiving water weekly since it turned hot at the end of June.

The Mediterranean Garden has been watered only as needed in the extended period of hot weather.

The Rock Gardens and Native Garden were watered in 2010 when they were planted and not since then.

All gardens are on an inline drip system.

It’s good to visit the garden in the late summer and fall to see what blooms at this time of year.

Tall sedums, ‘Matrona’ and ‘Arctic Fire,’ are just beginning to bloom.

The bee-magnet shrub bluebeard (Caryopteris) is about to flower.

Salvias and Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’ that were cut back in early July are re-blooming.

Long bloomers Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm,’ Aster frikartii, Gaillardia ‘Burgundy’ and Coreopsis ‘Golden Gain’ are still eye-catching.

Ornamental grasses are in full glory.

Although plants were not chosen specifically to create a ‘bee’ garden, the unH2O is always alive with an amazing diversity of pollinators.

Others have been chosen for their attractive foliage.

PORTLAND, Ore.—Portlandia is pridefully weird, with its love of beards, bikes and crazy junk food. After a couple of high-calorie days here, I want to put the fetching little city on my handlebars and ride.

So I do.

Cycle Portland Bike Tours’ basic ridearound starts downtown about a mile from the

city’s core. During the two-hour ride, guide Sam Appelbaum huddles up the 10 of us at various pit stops around town for breezy accounts of the city’s history. It’s an engaging way to get a feel for the city’s layout and some of its conventional and quirky offerings.

At our first stop along the waterfront, we learn how former Gov. Tom McCall led the effort to turn the strip of freeway hugging the Willamette River into green space, changing the face and feel of downtown.

From there, we head across the river, down curling bike paths to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, better known as OMSI, where Appelbaum deftly explains how Portland is working to enhance and encourage micro-neighbourhoods to cut down on crosstown traffic.

A guided bike tour is fun and informative Portland from A37 workforce commutes primarily by bike each day.

Here, cycling is integrated into the lifestyle, with bike boxes, racks and traffic lanes a constant presence. That’s not to say there aren’t the typical tensions between motorists and riders. But Portland is further along than most cities.

what you’d think, with participants dressed as favourite characters.

• Tater Tot Tour, a moderate overnight camping trip, 30 miles each way, in which participants refuel on one of the staples of the Portland diet.
