New website for teachers’ strike

great news!

By Tom Fletcher

The B.C. government has launched a new website to prepare parents for a possible continuation of the teacher

strike after Labour Day. The website, bcparentinfo.ca, promises the latest bargaining updates on B.C.’s festering teacher dispute,

and will act as a portal for parents registering to collect $40 a day for each child under 12 if the strike drags on. It also offers links to online learning

resources from school districts, which have proliferated in recent years. Talks have continued see Website page 5

3 Facts you need to Know About... Teacher Negotiations Photo submitted

Education Minister Peter Fassbender (left) maintains the BCTF’s demands are too far-reaching. The BCTF, represented by President Jim Iker, (right) met with mediator Vince Ready last week. Website from page 2

under a media blackout since mediator Vince Ready met the two sides last week. “Mr. Ready agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will

be productive,” the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and B.C. Public School Employers’ Association said in a brief statement. Negotiations broke off and a full-scale strike and lockout ended the school year in June. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen

Kelleher met both sides earlier but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too large a gap between the two sides. Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron have maintained that the BCTF’s benefit

demands remain far beyond those of other public sector unions that have settled contracts. Also at issue is class size and special needs support, with BCPSEA’s latest offer rejected by the union and the latest of a series of court actions scheduled for this fall.

Ready’s last involvement in the long-running series of teacher disputes was as an industrial inquiry commissioner in 2007. At that time he recommended that a senior provincial official be involved in talks along with an independent mediator.

• Government hopes to reach a negotiated settlement with the BCTF in August and stands ready to negotiate any time over the summer, once the BCTF is ready to commit to a fair and affordable settlement that is in line with agreements already reached with 150,000 other public sector workers. • In the event that doesn’t happen, government is developing a contingency plan to give parents as much time as possible to plan out of school learning opportunities for their children. • A one-time support payment of $40 per day will be made available to parents of children under the age of 13 that are attending B.C. public schools. It will be funded from savings that accumulate from September 2 until the labour dispute is resolved. MLA Bill Bennett

Letter: Ensuring food security for B.C. Long-term protection of our food producing lands is critical to ensuring British Columbia’s food security. Since serious changes were proposed to the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) earlier this year as part of Bill 24, our farmland has been under threat. Now, in the middle of summer—harvest time for most BC farmers— the government has opened an engagement

process on the proposed changes. Please take action and let the government know you want all of BC farmland to remain protected. It is critical that despite the bad timing, we weigh in on this issue. The engagement process closes on August 22. It’s time to let the government know that you do not agree with some of the proposed

Letter: The importance of multiculturalism When I was running for Mayor three years ago, I spent a lot of time thinking about the kind of Cranbrook I wanted to live in, and to help create. One of the most important aspects was a community that truly values and celebrates the arts and multi-culturalism. Last August the Arts Council held its first Arts in the Park event and it is happening again next Saturday, August 23rd here in Rotary Park. You are part of Cranbrook’s history by participating in our first ever multi-cultural festival! It’s been an interesting progression. The Ktunaxa First Nation, whose traditional territory we are standing on today, have been sharing their culture with us for a number of years through storytelling, drumming, dancing and singing. The Metis, who have the second longest connection with the land in Canada, have been very active the last three years celebrating their heritage at City Hall and in the community – it’s impossible to keep your toes from tapping when

the fiddlers are playing and the dancers jigging! The Filipino community has also played an important role in the last two years, sharing their dances, their colorful fashions, their music and their food, along with celebrating their Independence Day. It has been such a pleasure to get to know all of these great people and to learn more about their cultures. Why not bring them all together and encourage other citizens with an interest in their cultures to participate? Early this year I got a phone call from Coco Seitz who had read in the newspaper of my interest in having a multi-cultural festival in Cranbrook. She asked to have a meeting. When we sat down she presented me with a detailed proposal for a festival. We came up with a list of people to contact, a meeting was held, a Society formed, fund raising commenced and today, due to a lot of hard work that I cannot take any credit for at all, we are celebrating Cranbrook’s first ever multi-cultural festival featuring a dozen cultures:

changes to the ALR— a system of farmland protection that has been lauded and recognized around the world. A system that works. The proposed changes maintain strong farmland protection for the proposed Zone 1 (Vancouver Island, the South Coast and the Okanagan) but in Zone 2 (the rest of the province), there would be new rules allowing nonagricultural uses of agricultural land, including oil and gas development, industrial and recreational development as well as subdivisions. 1. Chinese 2. Japanese 3. Korean 4. Indian 5. Filipino 6. Italian 7. Dutch 8. South African 9. Vietnamese 10. Ktunaxa 11. Metis 12. Canadian Having a festival like this is important from many aspects: 1. It enriches our community – you’ll see today how many ways it does that. 2. It makes a clear statement that Cranbrook is a welcoming place to live. 3. It contributes to promoting tourism and the economy. 4. It makes us more interesting and fun as a city. So are we done – No, we are just beginning. We are celebrating 12 cultures – there are 196 countries in the world if you include Taiwan – so yes, there is definitely room for growth, and there will be even bigger festivals in the future!! Thank you to all of you who made this festival happen and for those of you who are here to enjoy the day. For me, this really is a dream come true. ~Mayor Wayne Stetski, City of Cranbrook

The entire Kootenays as well as 90% of our province is in Zone 2. Please take action. Stand with BC farmers by sending an email to the government. Let them know that you don’t agree with the new zoning. Strong protection of farmland must remain in place for the Kootenays and all of BC. After local MLA Bill Bennett’s statement that to eat local “where I come from, you’d have to eat hay,” Kootenay farmers sent two of our own to Victoria to prove him wrong. Erin

Harris from Kootenay Meadows in Lister and Oliver Egan from Edible Acres in Windermere delivered a strong message opposing the changes, bringing with them a cornucopia of Kootenay products to display on the lawn of the BC Legislature. The high quality of agricultural lands in the Kootenay region was recently re-emphasized by the Chair of the Agricultural Land Commission: “the majority of prime agricultural lands are situated in the Interior, Kootenay and North

regions” (all regions included in the new Zone 2). Soil experts have publicly opposed the proposed changes to the ALR and former Minister of the Environment Joan Sawiki calls it “shortsighted” as it would significantly weaken “the most successful agricultural land preservation program in North America.” This is our legacy and our children’s future. Ensure food security for all British Columbians.Take action by sending an email to the government. Let

them know that the proposed changes to the ALR, specifically the newly proposed zones, do not help farmers but leave them vulnerable to outside interests. If you have any questions, the Wildsight team would be happy to discuss this issue further with you. You can reach us at office@wildsight.ca or by phone at 250.427.9325. Sincerely, ~Robyn Duncan and the Wildsight Team

Heavy smoke from proactive burning Submitted People living in the communities of Canal Flats, Elkford and Invermere may notice large columns of smoke in the air as a result of proactive burning starting on Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, around the lightning-caused wildfires that make up the White Complex. Several of these wildfires are located in very steep and dangerous terrain and these burn-offs are necessary to limit the potential growth and direction of the fires. The objective is to guide the fire toward control lines at the valley bottoms where containment can be established. No communities or structures are threatened by any of these fires at this time. Although the fire danger has dropped in most of Southeast British Columbia, it remains “Moderate” to “High” in the areas surrounding the White Complex. The

Southeast Fire Centre is urging the public to be extra cautious with campfires in the backcountry. All personcaused fires are preventable and these incidents may affect the ability of the firefighting crews to respond to naturally occurring fires. The Southeast Fire Centre would like to remind aircraft operators that when smoke or flame are identified in a wildland area the surrounding airspace (over a forest fire area, or over any area that is located within five nautical miles of a forest fire, at an altitude of less than 915 metres or 3,000 feet above ground level) automatically becomes flight restricted under the authority of Section 601.15 of the Canadian Aviation Regulation. As per Section 601.17 of the regulation, all air traffic, including drones wishing to access the restricted air space of a wildfire incident may do so only with the per-

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A7 mission of the regional wildfire coordination centre responsible for managing that fire. Aircraft will be granted access to restricted airspace only when and if it is safe to do so. Area Restriction Orders, lifted and maintained: An Area Restriction Order for areas near a group of fires east of Canal Flats has been rescinded effective immediately. The following forest service roads are now open: * The main Whiteswan Forest Service Road from Highway 93/95 junction to the 32-km marker. * The entire Kootenay Forest Service Road. * The entire WhiteRock Forest Service Road. Access roads leading to Whiteswan Provincial Park and Lussier Hot Springs are now open, and the park will open effective immediately. Access to the White River Forest Service Road via the Whiteswan Forest Service Road will be closed past the 32-km marker to the general

public due to fire fighting activities in the area. An Area Restriction Order put in place on Aug. 8, 2014, for areas near a group of fires northwest of Elkford will remain in place

until further notice to protect the safety of fire fighting personnel and the public. This area restriction includes the following: * The entire East Fork of the White River

Forest Service Road (FSR) from approximately 46.0 km to Munroe Lake. * The Bull River FSR south to approximately 95 km. * The entire Crown

land portion of the Crossing Creek Trail east to Round Prairie. No structures or communities are immediately threatened by any of these fires at this time.

Cranbrook wakeboarder wins bronze in national competition Submitted

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Cranbrook’s Colden Thopson took bronze in the Junior Mens Division at the Canadian National Wakeboard Championships.

It was a podium finish for a Cranbrook wakeboarder on Sunday as 17-year old Colden Thompson won bronze in the Junior Mens Division at the Canadian National Wakeboard Championships. “This whole experience was amazing,” says Thompson. “It’s a huge honour to win the bronze medal, especially in my first national competition. Aside from the competitive side of things, I learned so much just by watching the other competitors.” Thompson, who was the first rider in the first qualifying heat on Friday, scored a 74 and completed the tricky toe side 540 as part of his run. He finished third in that heat, and had to ride in a second qualifying round in order to move onto semifinals. He took first place in the qualifying heat, moving on as one of the 10 riders to make it to semifinals. A second place finish in his semi-

final heat qualified him for a spot in the finals, where he captured bronze after completing a flawless run. “I knew every run and every trick counted, and I pushed myself on every ride,” adds Thompson. “The competition was intense and it was an experience I’ll never forget.” Thompson and the other medalists in his division were also invited to participate in the Open Men’s Pro Division, which showcased the best riders in Canada. “I want to thank everyone in Cranbrook who supported me on this journey,” says Thompson. The Canadian National Wakeboard Championships were held over the weekend in Bala, Ontario. Thompson will be back in the water this weekend as he competes in the Waterski and Wakeboard Alberta Provincials at Alix Lake near Red Deer, Alberta.

New family-affordable housing officially opened in Invermere Submitted The governments of Canada and British Columbia, along with community partners, officially opened an 18-unit apartment complex in Invermere, providing affordable housing for low to moderate income families. “Stable and affordable housing is a key element in maintaining the mental and economic well-being of our community members. By converting this apartment complex into affordable rental housing, we are able to preserve this much needed housing stock for families who need it the most. We are directly making a difference in the lives of these people, and in doing so we are contributing to the good of the entire community. It’s immensely satisfying,” Pat Cope, executive director, Family Resource Centre of

Invermere. “Partnerships between all levels of government are essential for making projects like this come to life. This kind of community collaboration results in tangible results for families. Within a short period of time this apartment complex has been renewed and is ready to meet the needs of the community,” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Core Review, MLA for Kootenay East. The newly renovated family development is within walking distance of amenities such as public transportation, medical services, parks, playgrounds, and commercial areas. The Family Resource Centre, owners and operators of the complex, provide counselling and support services for individuals and families dealing with

life challenges. “Conversion projects like this one are a great way to respond efficiently to our community’s need for affordable housing. Only five months have passed since we announced this endeavour and we can now welcome the first residents that will make this place their home. Our government is proud of its investment in this very worthwhile project,” said David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Kootenay Columbia on behalf of the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State for Social Development. Quick Facts: * The building is located at 218 - 10th Avenue. * The governments of Canada and British Columbia provided a combined investment of $744,558 through the Affordable Rental Housing initiative

(http://www.bchousing.org/Initiatives/ Creating/ARHi) underthe CanadaB.C. Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-2014 that was recently extended until 2019 * Columbia Basin Trust also contributed $744,558. * The Government of B.C. arranged $150,000 in long-term financing. * Other contributors include: the District of Invermere ($30,000), the Family Resource Centre of Invermere (approximately $50,000 equity), and the previous apartment owners of the apartment complex ($100,000 charitable donation).

The Government of Canada is helping Canadians with disabilities develop the skills and experience they need to find jobs, the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State (Social Development) announced recently. “To support Canada’s long-term prosperity, we must ensure that everyone who wants to work has the opportunity to do so. Canadians who face particular challenges entering the job market need help overcoming barriers, and that’s why partnerships with organizations like Kootenay Employment Services are so important,” said The Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State (Social Development) K o o t e n a y Employment Services will receive more than $509,000 from the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities for its project to help those with varying abilities get jobs. “We know that there are some talented individuals who

face unique challenges when it comes to finding work. This is why I am pleased that our government is helping Canadians in Kootenay-Columbia develop the skills and experience they need to find jobs,” said David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Kootenay-Columbia. The project will provide up to 44 Canadians living in the B.C. Rockies region with help to overcome barriers to employment through either skills workshops on topics such as résumé writing and interview techniques or work placements with local employers. Participants join throughout the year and, since April, four have started the skills training component, while 17 have begun their work placements with the goal of gaining permanent jobs with their employer. The project runs from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015. “It has been said that the best social program in the world is a good job, and that is where the Working Solutions Program comes in. This program creates

a vital bridge for people with disabilities to access meaningful employment. Working Solutions is not a grant, but rather an investment in human capital that provides multiple returns. People with disabilities become valued members of the workforce, empowered with skills, self-confidence and an income that allows them to contribute to social systems rather than depend on them,” said Hugh Grant, Executive Director, Kootenay Employment Services Society. This is part of the Government of Canada’s overall strategy to equip all Canadians with the skills and training they need to connect with available jobs. To provide more training solutions related to in-demand jobs for Canadians with disabilities, Economic Action Plan 2013 announced an increase in funding, to $40 million annually, for the Opportunities Fund. Since 2006, the Opportunities Fund has helped over 34,600 Canadians with disabilities.

On April 25, 2014, Minister Kenney announced that the governments of Canada and British Columbia signed a renewed Labour Market Agreement for Persons with Disabilities that will better meet the employment needs of Canadian businesses and improve employment prospects for Canadians with disabilities, helping residents in British Columbia get much-needed skills and training to find jobs. The Government of Canada is inviting organizations to apply for funding through the Enabling Accessibility Fund for projects that will increase workplace accessibility for Canadians with disabilities. The Call for Proposals, which opened on August 6, gives eligible organizations in all provinces and territories the opportunity to submit proposals until October 1, 2014. Gregarious Gardener

10 Neat Things Von Houligan’s Carnival coming to Kimberley by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Deer Resistant Plants

1. Not Fond of Greens. If you just had your garden mowed down by a herd of hungry deer, you might not think they are picky eaters. They are though, at least when they have lots of options. Ornamental grasses are one of those plant families on their list of things to leave alone until there is nothing better to be had. The prickly texture of ‘Karl Foerster’, ‘Blue Oat Grass’ and other ornamentals is what keeps them off the menu. 2. A Hairy Proposition. It is not just coarse leaves deer find unpalatable, smaller and softer hairs are also not to their liking The leaves of plants in the artemisia family are fine-textured and slightly fuzzy leaves and many poppy varieties also have hairy leaves. Both plants also rely on essential oils and other elements to give them a bitter taste. Making them even more unattractive. 3. Not Very Flavourful. Deer also prefer their food somewhat bland, strong smells and tastes can turn them away. That is why many herbs, such as members of the garlic and onion family that have a strong smell - as well as sage, oregano, lavender and many others - strong taste - tend to get ignored. 4. First Safe Blooms of the Season. Bleeding hearts and peonies are some of the first perennials to bloom in the garden. We feast our eyes on their vibrant display in shades of white, pink and red, but deer have a hard time getting past what they think is a strong smell and bitter taste. So if they come in for a nibble, chances are they will turn to something tastier soon. 5. Treat for Us, not for Deer. Unfortunately for many gardeners, some tastes deer have are similar to ours. They enjoy the tender shoots of Swiss chard and beets and love to munch on strawberry plants (leaves and all). There are some plants, however, that you will likely not have to share. Their prickly branches make currants and gooseberries as well as the native ground cover Oregon grape unattractive to deer. 6. Barb-berry. The defense mechanism of barberries against being consumed is sets of small thorns along the branches, making this a very popular shrub in this area, either as a foundation plant or as part of an informal hedge. There are many varieties in vibrant colours, including the newest addition ‘Jade Carousel’, a very hardy plant with green foliage that turns a striking scarlet orange in the fall. 7. Bees Yes... Deer No! Its common name ‘Bee Balm’, indicates that monarda is a plant that attracts bees, butterflies and all sorts of other winged creatures into your yard. But the strong and luxurious scent of this flower is exactly what makes it unattractive to deer and might just keep them walking by. 8. Russian Connection. Despite their common origin in central Asia and the fact this is even mentioned in their names, the Russian olive and Russian sage have two vastly different strategies to hold their own against ungulates. The Russian olive tree is a showy landscape plant with attractive silver foliage and fragrant yellow flowers in spring. It also has large thorns protecting its branches. Russian sage has an intense fragrance that may turn heads - away. 9. My Food Stinks! Besides picking plants that deer find unappetizing, there are deer repellent sprays on the market that further increase the ICK level for nibblers. One of the most effective products is ‘Bobbex’, a spray made from all natural ingredients that stop a deer browsing by using multiple smell and taste deterrents. It can be used on all ornamental shrubs and flowers. 10. Good Fences Make Good Neighbours. Especially if deer have already made your garden a stop on their foraging tour, fencing is the only way to keep them completely out of yard. Your fence has to be high enough to keep the animals from jumping it as well as secured tightly, with no openings to wiggle their way in.

Lawsuit disappoints Ktunaxa Submitted The Ktunaxa Nation is disappointed with the recent filing of a lawsuit on behalf of the Okanagan Nation Alliance challenging an Incremental Treaty Agreement reached between the Ktunaxa Nation and the Province of British Columbia in March 2013. Under the Incremental Treaty Agreement, approximately 242 hectares of land near Nakusp in the Arrow Lakes region will be transferred from the Province to the Ktunaxa Nation in advance of a final Treaty. “The Ktunaxa Nation

Council respects that the Okanagan do not wish to be part of the Treaty process,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair. “However, the Ktunaxa are making progress in Treaty negotiations and it is disappointing to have another Nation try to undermine our efforts. The Ktunaxa Nation will take appropriate steps to protect our rights and interests, but we would prefer to resolve these issues through discussion and dialogue.” “This is not about the Ktunaxa stepping outside our territory into Okanagan territory. There is clear evidence of our people’s

use and connection to the Arrow Lakes area, where these lands are located,” continued Teneese. “We respect that Okanagan have a connection to this area as well. However, we cannot accept the viewpoint that Okanagan interests override Ktunaxa interests on this matter.” The Ktunaxa Nation Council is currently reviewing the lawsuit to determine how its interests are affected.

Horoscope for the Week: August 22, 2014 Contact Michael O’Connor for a Personal Reading • 250-352-6871 sunstarastrology@gmail.com • www.sunstarastrology.com Tip of the Week: The Sun enters Virgo on August 22 at 9:46 pm PDT. This marks the official last month of summer which ends on September 22nd, Autumn Equinox. This time can accurately be called ‘Virgo time’. Due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis we experience the seasons - elementary. This system of Astrology has been in operation for about 2000 years, it was created to work this way. It can be described as a system of Astrology linked to the Sun’s light and, by extension, the seasons. It can also be interpreted the other way around. What this tells us is that the nature of the sign is directly linked to the ‘time of the year’. The Zodiacal constellations, while still recognized, are not the basis of this system. This has been clarified many times yet some people seem unable or unwilling to understand that Western Tropical Astrology is founded upon the seasons and the Sun’s light. The orbital cycles of the planets within the context of this annular rhythm represent the variable factor of overlapping cycles. Like basic arithmetic, Western Astrology features a relatively fixed common denominator and variables. Despite repeated efforts to explain this basic model, it remains that every now and then someone emerges to credulously proclaim that Astrology ‘is out of whack’, as if they are cracking the code on some global conspiracy, because it does not defer to the Zodiacal Constellations. It is also remarkable to see how many people idly fall for it, without even trying to truly understand what they were so easily convinced to believe. This tendency can be witnessed in other areas where news and information is openly shared with the public and does not only apply to the logical basis of the model of Western Astrology. Mar 21 – Apr 20) Although the languor of summer may linger, you are ready to get to business. Your tanks may be pretty full but you may want to get some extra reserves. Yet, your focus is beginning to take a more sober and serious turn. This will become increasingly evident this week. With awareness of this transition you can strike the balance and have it all.

Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) An expansive cycle with increased social opportunity has begun. Yet you may suddenly feel the need to pull back for a while. The main point is to rest and re-center. Your ambitions will not cease. Rather, you will be able to pursue them from a clearer and more energized state. Some amount of social activity remains a good idea, just less for a while.

Taurus (Apr 20 – May 21) Transferring inspiration into actual creative expression and/ or genuine feelings of compassion and desires to serve and heal continues. Heart opening experiences are flooding your senses. Feeling confident that you can or that your expressions will be well received may be an issue. Affirm that if you do it with, for and through love you will succeed.

Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) It is likely that you have successfully attracted more attention over the past few weeks. Hopefully it is the kind you want. Beyond simply getting seen, you also have wanted to be heard, to clearly get a few key points across. Now the results of your efforts will really begin to come in. They will guide you to your next set of strategies, which you are already keen to assert.

Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) A cycle of rises and falls and of dramatic turns continues. These are forcing you to make choices and efforts you would prefer not to. Yet circumstances are compelling you to make certain sacrifices. It is important that you be willing to work it this way for a while. Yet, you may also feel the need for guidance, instruction and/or training. Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22) Just when you might have thought things would slow down, they are accelerating. Suddenly you have more work and errands and details to attend to. It remains likely that you are open to invest, to take a few risks. Yet, you want to be informed. So, this is high on your ‘to do’list, to ask questions and, more importantly, to get answers. Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 23) All being well, you have begun to take some key initiatives over the past few weeks, to make some real power moves. Now it is time to bring more practical and constructive critical analysis to the fore. The main objective is to be effective and to save time and money too, and to advance all the same. Listen well now, think twice, and buy later. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) The Sun in your sign suggests your have entered an important cycle inviting you to take some pioneering initiatives. What these are specifically depends on your circumstances. Either way, the more willing you are to see yourself, others, current realities and what you feel you need to do from new angles and perspectives, the better. Try something new!

Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) If you have been waiting for a window of opportunity to make your next big move then get excited because it has arrived. There is reason to say you are still on something of a high but are now coming back down to earth (sigh). Making the most of it includes taking stock of your gifts, talents, skills and resources and making these available to be recognized. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) You are in the mood to go big somehow. To this end you have been busily educating yourself and getting the facts. This learning curve focus continues and will for a few weeks yet. It remains likely that to succeed you have to enlist the talent and resources of others. Weaving your own special talents with theirs remains the key. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) The time has come to deepen your focus. This includes investigation, research and perhaps meditation or deepened concentration. Determining what you have to use, share and trade and perhaps what you believe you are worth is one aspect. The other includes deciphering what you feel you need. Get clear on both accounts for increased success. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) Focusing to increase your overall state of health has been a central theme these past few weeks. This could extend to your work as well as to your constitution. Now it is time to extend your reach to engage with others. It is likely that communications to this end have already begun. Now it is time for the next phase which includes decisions and commitments.

One of your worst fears has materialized—your teen is using drugs. But it’s useless to feel guilty or to panic. Ignoring the situation is not the right way to go either. It is far better to approach the problem with discussion, understanding, and accountability. Discussion Approach the subject calmly with your teen when he or she is not under the influence of drugs. Make him aware of your suspicions. Rather than criticize, express what you feel about the situation, whether it’s anxiety, incomprehension, or fear. Give him your support and encourage him to find his own solutions for stopping the drug use. unDerstanDing If your child is not of the opinion that taking drugs is a problem, do not try to force him outright to stop using them. Instead, have a discussion about the reasons that led him to take drugs in the first place. Help him to get the correct information about drugs, let him know the range of resources he has at his disposal to get help, and tell him that he can count on your support. There is no point in giv-

ing him orders or trying to protect him in spite of himself. The right attitude to adopt is that of a guide. accountability It is a mistake to cover up mistakes or misdemeanours your teenager has committed under the influence of drugs. It is important to let him face the consequences of his actions. He must face his debts, justify his absences from school himself, and deal with the consequences of poor academic performance.

OBITUARY Gerald James Mortimer February 15, 1924 – July 30, 2014 It is with much sadness that the Mortimer/Chivers families announce the death of Gerald James Mortimer. Born in Sunnybrook, Alberta on February 15, 1924, Gerry was 90 years of age when he passed away peacefully at Kipnes Veteran’s Centre in Edmonton, Alberta on July 30, 2014. In 1941 at age 17 Gerry enlisted in the army as gunner with the Royal Horse Artillery. Unfortunately he suffered severe hearing loss during training which afflicted him the rest of his life. As a consequence of his hearing loss he was honourably discharged in 1942. Gerry’s life took him across Alberta including Sunnybrook, Blairmore, Bellview, High River, and British Columbia including Creston, Newgate, Grasmere, Cranbrook, Revelstoke. Everywhere Gerry lived, he made steadfast friends. He was a large and gentle man with a kind and caring heart. He worked at many occupations including farming, logging, as a sawyer and a sawmill operator before moving to Edmonton, Alberta where he and his wife Enid served as resident managers for a number of apartment buildings before retiring. Gerry was predeceased by his parents Joe and Effie, by his beloved wife, Enid Ethel Mortimer, by their daughter, Janice Enid Shelly Eyre, by Gerry’s son, Leslie Mortimer, by stepsons Leslie, Ronnie and David, and by his siblings, brother Ron and sisters Joyce, Shirley and Evelyn. Gerry is survived by his sisters Gen, Iris and Lola, brother Mel, niece Annette Hambler, stepsons Rod and Barrie, grand children Devon and Jesse Eyre, Todd, Randy, David, Glenn, Ardyth, Anita, Jamie, Darren, Daniel and Tamara Chivers and Leanne Smith, and great grandchildren Amber, Cassidy and Mason who he was delighted to welcome to the family in March 2014. There will be a gathering of friends and family for Gerry’s Inurnment on Sunday, August 31st, commencing at 12:30 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Cemetery in Fernie, BC. Those who wish to make a memorial donation in honour of Gerry may do so to a charity of their choice or to the Canadian War Amps. See more at their website: www.waramps.ca

Request for Sign Design and Bid The Village of Canal Flats is seeking submissions for a design and bid from interested proponents to provide a Columbia Discovery Center sign.

Background

The Village of Canal Flats constructed a 2500 square foot log building to house the municipal offices, a Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre, and the Headwaters Art Society. The Village of Canal Flats wants to ensure that a sign is placed adjacent to the building identifying the occupants and the option of a LED reader board so Village, community and emergency notices can be displayed. The sign is to be placed 10 feet from the property line and is to be two sided to illustrate a view from the south and north. The proponents will not be required to install the sign.

St. Aidan Orthodox Church Slugs: A Double Smoky slug referring to the Aug 8 ”Huge Slug” there is an equally or worse situation in the Community Forest. Some thoughtless person(s) is (are) using a rotting fallen tree about 15‘ off the trail in tinder dry bush as a “Smoking Lounge”. Probably sitting on the good part of the tree smoking and using a hollowed out portion as an ashtray. There are dozens of cigarette butts in this “ASH TRAY”. The surrounding area serves as a convenient garbage disposal site. I reported this hazardous situation to the authorities July 16 but it appears no action was taken. I would think, at the least the “Smoking Bench” should have been removed or destroyed to remove the temptation. They tell us to be vigilant, maybe they want us to wait until an actual fire starts and then report it to make it more exciting? Our beautiful Community Forest is at risk! So, a DOUBLE SMOKY SLUG goes to 1) The Perpetrator(s) and 2) The People in charge of keeping our forest safe. Hugs: A hug to the EKPIC team for all their good work in controlling the spread of invasive species in our waters and on land. All done with very limited funds. Without more funds Mr. Bennett, the EKPIC can’t help with this serious problem. Hugs: While in Cranbrook visiting this past July, I had a flat tire downtown and have never changed a tire in my life. After panicking, a nice man came along and got me all sorted out. He did so with such courtesy and generosity. All he said was “I’m George from the Byng. Thank you sincerely! You saved the day for us! What a nice man. Slugs: To all the drivers who won’t stop for pedestrians at the front entrance of Wal Mart, Superstore, Safeway and Save On Foods. Hugs: To the lady who found my purse outside in a shopping cart and turned it in at Target, where I retrieved it. Slugs: Great big slimy slugs to all the smokers who drive around and throw lit cigarette butts out their vehicle windows. Your vehicle has an ashtray! Use it! It is people like you who cause forest fires! And

don’t try to justify your actions by saying that you are throwing it onto pavement, because if you will throw them onto pavement, you will throw them onto other types of terrain too. Plus wind from passing vehicles can and will move those butts off the pavement. Use your ashtrays!!! Hugs: To the nursing staff on the 2nd floor of Cranbrook Hospital - I was just in the hospital for a surgery. Your patience for all the things that get thrown at you from recovering/sick patients is admirable. Made me realize how tough your job can be always dealing with unhealthy patients. Slugs: For the horrible hospital food during my stay at the Cranbrook Hospital. We are sick and recovering - how is a person supposed to get better with such awful food. It’s bearly edible. I wasn’t allowed to eat for over 24 hrs after my surgery. So I was plenty hungry for my first meal - lunch included an egg sandwich - first it didn’t look too appetizing, second - when I tasted the first bite I thought - not much flavour, next bite - no change, sorry I couldn’t eat this crap. Perhaps Interior Health managers should try eating their “own dogfood” - try a hospital meal sometime. Huge HUGS: to all the kind and caring campers at the Lazy Lake campground on the evening of August 7th! But especially to the off duty paramedic (and family) who stayed with me until I recovered from the heat and dehydration! I hope you got your blanket back. We left early the next morning so we couldn’t say thank you and good-bye! I will pay it forward... You all rocked! Slugs: to the construction company building a home at 4th Avenue South and 17th Street South for blocking a residential street with loaded heavy equipment while at least 4 or 5 of you shoot the breeze, not caring about traffic that needs to use that street. How Rude! Hugs: to Drew from the band Fools and Kings for gifting Dawson with your album! He is over-the-moon with excitement and actually cried. You are an awesome human!!!

If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382

A call out to internet providers in the basin Submitted Columbia Basin Trust is reaching out to identify small- to mediumsized local and regional Internet service providers (ISPs) that are interested in expanding connectivity and/or upgrading existing infrastruc-

ture to meet new federal standards for broadband in the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions. This appeal is being done in cooperation with the Regional Broadband Committee, comprised of the regional districts of Central Kootenay, Kootenay Boundary,

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A29 East Kootenay and Columbia Shuswap, the Village of Valemount and the Ktunaxa Nation Council. Through the Digital Canada 150: Connecting Canadians initiative, the Canadian government has recently committed to $305 million in funding. More details of the federal program and criteria for applications are expected to be released in the fall, but the Trust is working with part-

ners and stakeholders to develop strategies to take advantage of funding. The Trust has identified some immediate priorities which include: • establishing which ISPs are interested in collaborating with the Trust to pursue funding under the federal program. • encouraging ISPs to update Industry Canada mapping data to confirm eligibility for federal funding before the

Industry Canada deadline of August 30. The complete call to ISPs can be found on our website at cbt.org/ ispcall. The Trust recognizes that collaboration and funding is critical for residents of rural and remote areas to gain access to high-speed Internet. The significant cost of infrastructure and low population density in many such areas mean that service

providers can’t generate a return on investment for extending services without support through public capital investments. Please advise the Trust of your interest to collaborate in funding applications for broadband development projects in the Columbia Basin and Boundary region. All responses and related questions can be directed to ispinfo@cbt.org or by calling

1.250.365.6633. For more information on how the Trust is connecting the Basin, please visit cbt.org/broadband. Columbia Basin Trust supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. To learn more about the Trust’s programs and initiatives, visit cbt.org or call 1.800.505.8998.
