HAIKU MASTER promotes Island poetry Terry Ann Carter haiku guru, instructing nourishing spirits Angela Cowan News Gazette Staff

There is a growing poetry movement on the Island, helped in no small part by View Royal’s own Terry Ann Carter, president of Haiku Canada. Despite only living here since 2011, Carter has thrown herself headfirst into the poetry community and been instrumental in gathering creatives together over the last year.

After leaving a well-connected haiku community in Ottawa, she struggled at first finding a niche on the Island. It was when she taught three highly successful haiku and bookmaking workshops at Royal Roads University that she was introduced to a group of people who shared her passion.

Carter quickly founded Haiku Arbutus, a group for haiku poets to meet and share, and take in the splendour of nature that so frequently features in the short works. The group meets at the Coast Collective, a locale that Carter says is most inspiring.

“We’re so close to nature. There’s such a great love of sea, wind and sky,” she says.

She adds that their approach to haiku is flexible, and includes observations on human nature as well as the natural world. Whether describing the flash of a heron’s wing as it lifts, or the deeply personal and moving moments of being human, haiku covers the entire spectrum. And it’s important not to get caught up in the five-seven-five syllable rule that everyone seems to learn in grade school. Carter says that strict format was likely a mistake in translation.

“What you’re aiming for is the moment and not counting syllables. We aim for less than five, less than seven, less than five,” she says.

“Removing the syllable count frees the poet up to feel that moment. You can say ‘moon,’ and not ‘moon up in the sky.’”

Carter has been studying haiku since the early ‘90s, when she attended a poetry conference at the University of Toronto and heard a Japanese haiku poet speak. Even though she couldn’t understand the language, the musicality of his reading and the emotion behind it moved her.

“My heart just sort of stopped,” she says.

“This understanding, this praise of nature. It was very elemental.”

She was fortunate to have a mentor in her developing years – renowned New York poet William Higginson – and says that she’s moved to give back to her students now. “When you’ve had that help, you know what it’s like to have someone spend some time with your poetry.”

Carter adds that haiku in particular is a challenging form.

“It’s hard to be so simple,” she says. “Haiku is a very different doorway that you walk through.”

She’s been asked to return to Royal Roads and will teach four haiku and bookmaking workshops this winter, and she says her spring students are in for a treat. “For our Spring workshop we’re actually going to use the Japanese garden that’s attached to Royal Roads.”

Carter is thrilled with the growth and interest in haiku since she moved to View Royal, and adds that it’s a wonderful way for poets – and aspiring poets – to connect with their surroundings.

“There are so many wonderful poets here,” she says. “I think (haiku) is sanity. To write this kind of haiku, you have to slow down. You have to unplug, and look and taste and hear.

Distraught male departs trestle safe A distraught man who was on a trestle in Goldstream provincial park Tuesday, Aug. 19 is safe. At 10:30 a.m. West Shore RCMP responded to a request from the Victoria police to try and locate the man in the park, where RCMP patrol officers, a dog handler and police dog Tito found the man within minutes.

The Vancouver Island RCMP Negotiator Team attended to reach out to the man, and Langford Fire and Rescue was also brought in due to the challenging nature of the site0.

The man walked off the bridge on his own at 4:30 p.m. and was taken to hospital.

West Shore Staff Sgt. Steve Wright said they “truly appreciate the work of our support teams.”

No one hurt in townhouse kitchen fire A small kitchen fire broke out in the townhouse complex at 2920 Phipps road on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Langford Fire Rescue responded, but the owner was able to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher before fire fighters arrived. There was some damage to the owner’s stove, and minimal smoke damage. No one was hurt in the incident. acowan@goldstream gazette.com

Langford firefighters kept busy despite intermittent rain Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

Despite the occasional overcast day and drizzle of rain, fires are still cropping up all over the West Shore.

At approximately 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, Langford Fire Rescue responded to a bark mulch fire in front of Jack’s Place pub on Country Club Way on Bear Mountain. Inspector Chris Aubrey said the fire had likely been caused by a tossed lit cigarette.

Later that morning at 10 a.m. fire fighters responded to smoke coming from a large pile of bark mulch on an industrial site at the end of Langford parkway. Staff at the site attempted to pull the mulch pile apart with an excavator to extinguish the spontaneous combustion fire, resulting in a flare-up of flames when air reached the smouldering

And last Saturday (Aug. 16) fire fighters responded to a second fire at the field beside Belmont Secondary, at Jacklin and Jenkins roads.

The West Shore RCMP garage sale and barbecue is back.

The annual fundraiser for the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock returns to the West Shore RCMP lot hoping to raise more than $5,000, enough to send three kids to Camp Goodtimes, a medically-supervised recreation camp for children with cancer and their families.

“I couldn’t imagine having a child going through cancer, it is hard enough as adults but to see a child go through that... it’s just always on your mind,” said organizer and 2013 TDR rider Donna Fraser. “This is just an opportunity to give back to our community and volunteer time for those kids.”

The auxiliary member of the West Shore RCMP, who also works at the West Shore U-Lock mini storage in Colwood said her time on the tour last year and her husband Rod Fraser’s participation in the 2011 tour precipitated her heavy volunteer schedule for the Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser which raised more than a $1.2 million when she cycled two weeks and more than 1,000 kilometres for the ride in 2013.

“It was a real privilege to be a part of the team,” Fraser said. “It

Even though both her and her husband’s rides are over, it is that support she hopes to continue, painstakingly organizing and pricing donated garage sale items one by one into green bins; 136 bins have been packed so far, helping raise money for West Shore RCMP staff sergeant Steven Wright’s Cops for Cancer campaign.

“It’s a big event. People look forward to this and attend this and Rod and Donna Fraser put a lot of effort into organization and the funds are greatly appreciated especially considering the uncertainty of the school strike, we are concerned,” Wright said.

“These events become that much more important in terms of raising money because we may not have the same revenue.”

The garage sale is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 at the West Shore RCMP at 698 Atkins avenue. The 2014 Tour de Rock takes place Sept. 20 to Oct. 3 and takes the 24 member team more than 1,000 kilometres from Port Alice to Victoria, getting into the West Shore Oct. 1 where the Westin Bear Mountain resort hosts a gala event and silent auction at 7 p.m.

New Allandale path garners improvements

Van towed after 1 a.m. crash

At 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, a white Ford Econoline van got stuck on Leigh road when it failed to negotiate a corner and became highcentred on a rock.

Langford Fire Rescue and the West Shore RCMP responded, the van was towed and the driver is currently under an impaired driving investigation.

A revised connection is coming to Colwood.

Work is underway to refurbish the newly dubbed Allandale Greenway, a trail starting at the end of Allandale Road and cutting across to Veteran’s Memorial Parkway near Sooke Road.

The pathway, named after Allandale road that runs into it, sees newly upgraded gates at both ends, signs making the trail more visible. It will be constructed from asphalt grindings reused from road improvements currently underway on three other sites.

Mount View Avenue, where the city is cost-sharing a project to allow for a new bike lane and traffic circle; Ridley Drive, where drainage improvements and repaving is currently underway; and Wishart school where sidewalk improvements start next week, will provide the grindings needed to complete the project.

West Shore cycling enthusiasts can now meet up in their own back yard, thanks to the efforts of avid cycler Raymond Pastuzenko.

After looking for a local cycling group and finding none, the Langford resident created a space on MeetUp.com for West Shore cyclists to gather, and has already had more than 30 people sign up for the weekly jaunts.

Recent trips have been out to Williams Lagoon, Glen Lake, Westhills and Florence Lake.

“They’re always in awe,” says Pastuzenko of the other members. “There are so many beautiful spots in the West Shore.”

The group meets every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in front of House of Beans in Goldstream Village.

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder W. Gifford-Jones, MD

W

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies.

The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.

This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors.

As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine!

Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries.

Think back through your life and try to remember the last time someone told you a story.

Not a story read from a book or rattled off at the end of the day, but a story told with intention, with deliberate pauses and with a voice that immerses you in the very breath of the tale.

You’ll likely have to think back to your childhood.

Sit in the audience of the Victoria Storyteller’s Guild in the throes of their monthly meeting and memories will no doubt come racing back. But these stories aren’t just for kids.

Stories of ancient sea demons in their black underwater caves and carnivorous tree spirits hunting in the mountains are thrilling enough to engage even the most adult of attendees. One particular Algerian folk tale of a fisherman who found love, only to give it up when faced with temptation and greed, was told with such fervour that the meeting room seemed to transform into a dusty village and hearts could be heard breaking in the chairs.

“Stories are how we’ve learned. That’s how we’ve evolved,” says Sharon House of View Royal, a member of the

guild since 2002. She started telling stories as a child, sparked by a school assignment, and she’s never really stopped.

“I was going to be this mystery writer/detective when I grew up,” House says with a laugh. “And my aunt said to me, ‘I think you can tell stories as well as you can write them,’ and so I would make up these stories and tell them at tea.”

She kept up the practice as she got older, writing some of her stories down and building a “tremendous collection.” House stayed connected to the storytelling world and was actually on the mailing list for the Victoria guild while living in North Carolina before she moved to the Island.

“When we eventually got to Victoria, I went down to the

guild and that was the end of that,” she says.

A member now for more than 10 years, House says keeping the oral storytelling tradition alive is so important.

“A lot of kids aren’t reading anymore. They will listen, but their attention span is quite small,” she says.

Nejama Ferstman, who’s been involved with the Storyteller’s Guild since its inception in the late 1980s, agrees and says most people, once they hear a story being told live, realize they’ve been missing the connection between a storyteller and their listeners.

“We make time to read a book or watch a play, but we have a visceral experience when we hear a story from a real person,” she says.

That experience is what makes the stories so easily remembered, and apt to stay with a person for years, Ferstman adds.

Chalk Art Festival readies return to downtown Vic Royal B.C. Museum new host venue for 3D portion of third annual festival Chalk artists from across North America and the region will soon descend on downtown Victoria for the third annual Victoria International Chalk Art Festival.

The festival presents a number of changes this year including a new host venue for a giant 3D chalk art painting along with the relocation of the festival’s Kid’s Chalk Zone and Performance Stage.

Museum will play host to Los Angeles-based 3D chalk artist Tracy Lee Stum who along with local First Nation’s artist Jamin Zuroski will paint a 6x 6-metre 3D masterpiece honouring the First Nations in Clifford Carl Hall.

Meanwhile the festival has discontinued operations in Centennial Square and has centralized the balance of activities to Government Street and Bastion Square.

“The feedback we

received last year is most preferred to have the Kid’s Chalk Zone and our Performance Stage closer to Government Street where the bulk of artists are chalking,” said John Vickers, executive director of the Victoria International Chalk Art Society.

“We took that advice to heart and thanks to collaborative efforts with the Bastion Square Market, we now look forward to hosting the Kid’s Zone on Langley Street while the performance stage will relocate to Government Street”.

Vickers said he had hoped to further expand

the Government Street closure zone this year however with final grant results determined, was not able to raise the funding necessary to do so. He said however the Fort to Yates street closure zone will be reconfigured to host many more artists within the existing area.

The festival’s First Nation’s theme this year is Nature’s Spirit, a celebration of art, wonder and adventure.

Scams abound on West Shore Almost every week we receive phone calls from West Shore residents, complaining about the latest computer or telephone scam.

Many of us have become wise to the ploys, and disregard the emails and phone calls. But clearly the scams still work, to a certain degree, or they would not continue to be used.

Most email services are very good at detecting the electronic scam artists, sending such letters directly to the junk pile.

All that said, with the aging population in Greater Victoria, it is worth the reminder.

These scam artists specifically target the elderly.

Why? Because the elderly are easy prey. They are typically more naive when it comes to computer knowledge, and thereby more likely to believe that an email sent to their address is indeed a call out to them, from a long-lost relative in Nigeria.

To the younger generation, that may sound gullible. But the elders in our society were raised in a more honest environment; where if someone asked for help, you believed they needed help. In many ways, it’s an enviable attitude, and one that is fading fast.

So, here are a few tips to our elderly neighbours – a few red flags to watch out for, when considering who is asking for your help.

1.) When checking your email, disregard anything from Nigeria, Somalia or any other country, unless you have direct relations with said country, and recognize the name of the sender.

2.) You did not win any money from a foreign lottery. The oldest marketing line in lotteries applies here: You can’t win if you don’t buy a ticket. And you did not buy a ticket.

3.) That service call from Telus, warning you that your computer has been hacked is not a service call from Telus. This scam is not only the most prevalent currently, but also the easiest to dismiss. Telus does not make unsolicited service calls. You call them if you have a problem.

So, the next time “Telus” or “B.C. Hydro” or “Revenue Canada” calls you to tell you your computer has been hacked, follow these steps: 1.) Put them on hold.

2.) Go for lunch.

They will be gone by the time you return.

Teacher’s strike a sad affair Re: BCTF will be pushed to settle, (Our View, Aug. 13) It’s sad to think your editorial “BCTF will be pushed to settle” might be right. Maybe the B.C. Liberal government “holds almost all the cards” and the teachers will have to fold.

I’m not a teacher and I’ve no school-age children. I think it’s sad that teachers in B.C. can’t be paid on a par with comparable professionals. It’s sad that students in B.C. can’t have the decent education ordered by B.C. courts.

It’s sad that parents are held hostage to government scheming, $40-per-day bribes notwithstanding.

It is especially sad that the word not mentioned in your editorial, the word hypocritically avoided by B.C. Liberal government, is: Privatize.

This is a long term threat to almost all of us. Teachers might get whipped -- this time. Students might be subject to substandard education -- this time.

Then the campaign will go on until finally public education is destroyed. Assets will be sold for

From plump tomatoes and crisp rainbow carrots to farm fresh eggs, local honey and pungent teas, the Goldstream Station market has something to make everyone’s taste buds tingle.

Next Wednesday it will open its doors for a trial evening market from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial park.

“It’s going to target a whole different group of people,” said manager Kate King. “It’s for people who maybe don’t have time to come out to the Saturday market.”

Market-goers can expect to see the same fantastic vendors as on the weekend, King said, including fresh produce from Littler Farms, the Pollock Family Farm and Shalebank Farm; heritage wooden buckets, small barrels and wooden kitchen tools from The Drying Shed; delectable baked goods from Baba’s Bakery and Bake My Day; handmade cheeses and yogurts from Cheese Pointe Farm; and all manner of jams, jellies and chutneys from Highland Bread and Jams.

Dozens of other booths are dedicated to pottery, arts and crafts, handmade soaps and bath goodies, jewelry and clothing.

Grab a relaxing massage in between visiting the many food trucks, or start tapping your toes to Route 66’s classic rock stylings as they belt out favourites from the ‘80s and beyond.

The evening is geared to be very family-friendly, King said.

“We have a wonderful children’s area with a face painter, a piano school that comes out with percussion instruments, and we have a wonderful fellow that makes great balloon animals. The kids will definitely enjoy themselves.”

The market is pet-friendly as well, so feel free to bring your leashed dog along to enjoy the festivities.

“We’re encouraging people to come out, throw down a picnic blanket and have dinner with us,” said King. “It’s a very relaxed, very communitybased atmosphere.”

If turnout is strong, King says she wants to hold at least one more evening market before the season ends, and hopefully two.

Saturday game features half-price tickets for players The Westshore Rebels football club couldn’t fend off the undefeated Langley Rams at Westhills Stadium last Saturday.

On a day celebrating family fay with superheros in attendance, the Rams special

teams seemed to be kryptonite to the Rebels. The Rams scored four TDs on special teams.

The Rebels started the game on a good foot with a drive down the field capped off with a 29-yard pass from quarterback Hunter Lake to Nick Spindor to lead 7-6, then the Rams came together on offence with six offensive touchdowns.

The Rebels team did manage another touchdown and a field goal to cap off the night with 16

points and held their penalties to the lowest amount of the season to drop them to 1-3 on the season.

The Rebels host the Chilliwack Valley Huskers at Westhills Stadium tomorrow (Aug. 23) at 1 p.m.

Dirt, debris, and BMX bikers ride into the West Shore this weekend.

The dirt track behind the 100.3 The Q arena plays host to the BMX Provincial Cup Race Final Aug. 23 and 24 where many of the best young riders in B.C. pedal, jump and fly past competitors in one of the fastestgrowing BMX communities in Western Canada.

“I think it is great, our sport is getting known and it is growing by leaps and bounds,” said organizer Dana Ogurek. “It’s exploding in Canada and I hope this will get some more eyes and ears out here.”

The sport’s quick ascent on the West Shore has played a large role in securing the PCR event and Ogurek said she expects further growth as highprofile events like the finals attract spectators and visitors from across the province.

“We earned the championships because (Greater Victoria BMX) is the highest growing club in the province for new memberships,” the Langford resident said. “By working hard and (through) word of mouth we have grown it from 60 members five or six years ago to 200 now.”

Ogurek spends countless hours volunteering alongside many other parents in preparation for an event she said is aimed at all ages, including her own son who benefits from the close-knit club.

The Land Rover LR4 was not what I was expecting, instead it was a pleasant surprised.

Looks: I’m used to seeing bulky and cumbersome old Land Rovers on the back roads, spinning out rocks while attempting a hill climb and shaking the occupants to bits! Fast forward to today’s version of the Land Rover and you will find an outstanding front end that is easily recognized with the signature grille and projector style headlights.

Also feature are those trend setting side vents on the front fenders, much copied in the aftermarket. And the large rear glass panels that extend up into the roof line make the overall appearance very clean looking and unique. Optional 20 inch rims are worth the upcharge.

In the cab: My first impression after climbing into the cab was one of disbelief. I did not expect that level of comfort.

The sight lines are amazing and the blind spot was almost non-existent. The rear seats had plenty of room for adults and the cargo area was adequate.

The heated leather wrapped steering wheel featured all the controls one needed to operate the equipment without distraction. The front and rear seats are heated. Power tilt/slide front sunroof and two sections of glass covering the

7 roof area over the 2nd and third row seats allow plenty of natural light in.

Safety: There are six airbags, including side curtain, side thorax and front passenger with occupant detection system, four-channel all terrain ABS, electronic brake assist and an electronic parking brake. Verdict: This luxurious vehicle has comfort and performance levels that should be expected at this price point.

This is a heavy vehicle and fully loaded with passengers and gear it is not going to get great fuel economy, but for some reason I don’t think that matters.

Bryan Hourt, Acura’s assistant large project leader of vehicle performance, tells of his upbringing on a ranch in northwest Nebraska, he talks about horse power.

He explains that when you connect with the animal, getting on with life’s daily tasks is much easier. If you’re out of sync with your horse, you work twice as hard since you have to think for both yourself and it. In one situation, you enjoy yourself and get more done. The other is exhausting.

If you’re in a car that you don’t connect with, everyday routine can be more arduous than it has to be. Its quirks rub you the wrong way. But, if you love your car and know exactly what it’s going to

do in any given situation life on the road is so much better.

Enter the 2015 Acura TLX that blends horsepower, with grace and poise.

When I slipped inside the cabin of the new TLX, pushed the start button, selected the “D” button and drove off, confidence was apparent from the start.

It’s a vehicle designed with performance in mind from the ground up. Its chassis features a newly designed four-wheel independent suspension system to help you enjoy country roads or urban life.

It’s tame at slower speeds – and very good table manners – but has the ability to take on higher speed challenges without breaking a sweat.

I might have taken a corner or two relatively swiftly, but the steering feel, and its ability to maintain composure in

a turn was impressive.

Each model comes with Acura’s Integrated Dynamics System that allows drivers to customize their driving experience through four selectable modes. Depending on the setting, Acura says, “IDS will adjust power-steering effort, throttle response, transmission shift logic, HVAC system operation, and the control logic for either the P-AWS or SH-AWD systems. The new Sport+ mode unlocks the full performance potential of the TLX with the most aggressive settings.”

Whether you want that extra bit of gusto, or you are driving around town, the TLX has a mode for you.

Three TLX models will be offered. The first comes with a 2.4-litre, i-VTEC inline-4 engine with an eight-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (8DCT) with torque

converter, and Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). It has an output of 206 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque.

Then there’s a trim with a 3.5-litre, i-VTEC V6 engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission and P-AWS. That produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, and gets 10 more hp and 13 more lb-ft of torque versus the 2014 TL 3.5-litre engine.

Lastly, there’s the TLX SH-AWD with next-generation Super-Handling AllWheel Drive, available only with the 3.5-litre, 290 horsepower V6 and ninespeed automatic.

Eventually, both the TSX and TL will be succeeded by the TLX. It makes sense.

Dimensionally, the TLX will be positioned between the ILX entry-luxury sedan and the RLX flagship Acura sedan.

There’s room for five, 405L of cargo room around back and places to store personal items.

Sure there are sportier offerings in the segment. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of them. So is the Audi A4. But what works for the TLX is its understated elegance. It’s pleasant to drive, and with a centre stack stripped of unnecessary buttons making it more user friendly. I’d describe my experience in both the 4 and 6 cylinder TLXs to be pleasant. Not the bad pleasant, the kind of adjective you use to describe a mother in-law or awkward coworker. But pleasant in the way that it’s quiet, does the job well and is a pleasure to drive.

Anderson, who keeps a travel blog, says that he’s been gathering ideas on how to break that barrier from readers who haven’t been able to travel themselves.

Halcyon Backpacking is seeking investors, and Anderson hopes to have several west coast and maritime trips running

next summer, before expanding into central Canada and the U.S. He says that while he’s garnered the interest of a lot of hopeful-travelers, the company is still a long ways away from meeting its financial goals.

“I’m a lot more confident in my daily life because of travelling, and I’m optimistic,” Anderson says. “I’ve had tremendous support so far, this really is something a lot of people have been waiting for.” reporter@vicnews.com

At 18 years old, Logan Anderson found himself on a plane, headed for Nova Scotia, with only a backpack filled with camping gear. For Anderson, who suffers from depression and social anxiety, making the commitment to travel alone across the country, and far outside his comfort zone, was a daunting task.

But after spending a month camping along the Atlantic Ocean, Anderson brought home a new, more confident mindset.

“The change in environment, being in nature, it was comforting in ways that regular counselling wasn’t,” says Anderson, a Victoria resident. “It’s a different kind of therapy.”

Now at 24, and having spent his summers traveling North America and Europe, Anderson wants to bring others suffering from mental health issues into that same headspace.

For the past six months, Anderson has been laying out plans for Halcyon Backpacking, a travel company focussed on well-being.

His goal is to have fiveto 25- day excursions through nature and cities, led by not only a

tour guide, but a professional counsellor, who would lead group sessions around a campfire or on the lake after a hike.

Each travel group would be made of people suffering from the same set of mental health issues, though he notes the goal of the trips is to create a fun atmosphere rather than feeling like a medical outing.

“Most youth tours are very party-oriented, and that can be really intimidating for some people,” says Anderson. “The whole

Deciding just how much extra to charge for a home with a spectacular view, compared a similar home without the same vantage point, can be a tricky business and depends partially on how strongly motivated the seller is to part with their property.

The people who appraise homes – usually experienced Realtors – look at a variety of factors when figuring out how to price a view home for a seller.

Answering such questions as, ‘is the view seen from rooms where it can regularly be taken advantage of?’ ‘Does it go away with the change of seasons or an ill-considered building permit?’ or ‘Is the focus on mountains or the ocean in the distance or on city lights a block away?’ can help determine the quality of your view.

The old real estate expression, “they’re not making any more waterfront,” holds true everywhere, including on the West Shore.

Jeff Sutherland, a trained journalist and magazine publisher who knows how to turn a phrase, knows that point well. Having moved to Bear Mountain from Duncan about five years ago, he and his wife enjoyed coming down to Esquimalt Lagoon where they could walk their dog and watch the various forms of traffic on the ocean.

During those waterfront trips, they would walk along Ocean Boulevard, which has a handful of homes facing the water. One particular property would always catch their attention.

“There was one house among the five here that we said if that house ever came on the market, we’d have a look at it,” Sutherland says.

The home did come on the market a couple of years ago, and with the help of agent Jason Leslie of ReMax Camosun, the couple snapped it up for what they felt was a decent price.

“The attraction of waterfront here is you could add half a million dollars (in price) to this same house if you go further (into Victoria),” says Sutherland, who still works out of Duncan, while his wife, an obstetrician, works out of Victoria General Hospital.

(Lagoon Road) and saving basically $200,000 and $300,000,” he says, but in the end the waterfront feature sold them.

Many properties on the ocean or on a lake are aging, Leslie says, which is not always what buyers these days are looking for. They may not be interested in doing renovations, or knocking down an old house to build new.

For that reason, Leslie says, true waterfront properties may well be considered undervalued right now.

“Ten years ago when a waterfront listing came up, it was snapped up,”

Well aware of the uniqueness of its location, the Sutherlands are considering a major renovation on their 1980-built home. Most cyclists partaking in Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria on Sunday are completely okay with Hesjedal’s absence.

The pro cyclist is in Spain for the threeweek Vuelta a Espana, or Tour of Spain, which runs Aug. 23 to Sept. 14.

It’s a little ironic, though, because this year’s Tour de Victoria, a mass participation ride that’s expanded its route through Saanich, was previously scheduled so Hesjedal could participate.

“People understand Ryder is going to compete in the Vuelta,” said Tour de Victoria director Seamus McGrath, a former pro mountain biker and Olympian.

“This might be a better way to give Ryder a chance to win (than in the Tour de France).”

The West Shore-raised Hesjedal finished an impressive ninth overall at the Giro d’Italia in May, having won that event in 2012. He then skipped the 2014 Tour de France in July to focus on this weekend’s Vuelta start.

When pro cycling teams are scheduling their rosters for the summer’s three Grand Tours of France, Italy and Spain, it’s common to have elite riders such as Hesjedal do either the Giro (May) and Vuelta (August), or the Tour de France (July) rather than all three.

For the region’s Grand Tour fans, having Ryder starting in the Vuelta the day before the Tour de Victoria is almost more

exciting.

“With pro cycling, it’s hard to see seven to nine months into the future,” McGrath said. “Hesjedal had such a great ride at the Giro, (Garmin-Sharp) decided to give him a chance to go for it at the Tour de Spain.”

This year’s Tour de Victoria is split into three distance groups.

The big ride is 145 kilometres. It starts in front of the B.C. legislature building and goes east through Saanich, View Royal and Colwood, then all the way to Metchosin before looping back through the Highlands.

It then crosses over to Cordova Bay and follows the water south through Saanich and Oak Bay, back to the legislature.

An abbreviated route of 100 km starts in Langford and follows much of the last 100 km of the big route, while an easier 45 km starts at the Camosun College Interurban campus, heads north around Elk Lake and also crosses over to Cordova Bay where it connects with the other routes and finishes on Belleville Street.

“The routes are focused heavily on riding in Saanich,” McGrath said. “It’s a favourite area for local cyclists and a treat for people from out of town because of the stunning scenery.”

The Tour de Victoria grew from 1,350 participants in its first year in 2011 to 1,800 cyclists last year.

McGrath said he anticipates another 1,800 this year but won’t know the numbers until Sunday of as the final count grows in the waning days before the event. reporter@saanichnews.com
