Provocative, inspirational quotes turned into unique artwork

Inspiration is found in journals that Cory Nespor began in 2000. His first journal was to document a summer adventure.

“Over time people started to write meaningful stuff,” he said during an interview at Sunday’s Community

Block Party in Lions Legacy Park.

He was one of the exhibitors, members of Sylvan Lake Art Society, who displayed and sold their artwork in the park during the weekend.

Nespor, a Calgary resident with a Sylvan Lake connection (his partner is Kelly MacVicar), said reading the journals he found himself beginning to paint some of the quotes in 2010

“With the books in tow, I started leading the inspired life I had always dreamed, and each day brought me closer to hearing the words that changed my life forever,” he wrote on his website (corynespor.com/). “Somewhere deep inside is the ticket to the ride of your life.”

“After that everything made sense. The books opened, passion poured out, and in three months — 11 paintings. Ten years after this thing started everything became clear. I had finally found my voice, and on my 30th birthday celebrated with my first exhibition.”

Since returning home, he saved every penny in

preparation for the biggest change of his life. In September 2013 he quite “a great career of 13 years to focus everything on my painting”.

“I felt I needed to give an honest effort to it,” he said. Now he’s creating his unique and decorative artwork full time.

The idea of providing a venue for members of the local art society to display their work, was explored earlier this year with Jazz At The Lake organizers and several booths were set up at the weekend festival.

Marian MacVicar, Kelly’s mother, was instrumental in convincing Nespor to bring his talent to the community for the event.

Following the trail to beer at the end, goal of Hash House Harriers

Colourful symbols began appearing on sidewalks throughout town last Wednesday night as preparations took place for an unusual event.

The pink or white symbols, some in the form of flowers, were tracking markers for the Red Deer Hash House Harriers.

In the past they’ve sparked controversy about their meaning and whether or not it was graffiti artists at work.

Sylvan resident Greg Brentnall assured that’s not the case. The markers are made with flour so that in the first rain they just wash away — or they’re blown away by the wind. But not before they’ve been used for an interesting race around the community.

The Red Deer organization is part of an international movement based

on the English game Hares and Hounds.

The hares go out and set the trail then the dollops are followed by the runners. A circle with a dot in the middle means the hare has ended the trail and runners (or walkers) have to start somewhere else. They have to look to see where the trail starts again, said Brenda Bond.

The purpose of trail changes is so slower people have a chance to catch up to the first runners. The new trail starts somewhere within 100 metres.

Once the new trail has been spotted, those participating call ‘on’ to indicate the direction.

“Sometimes we’re sneaky,” said Bond. “We’ll set a trail in a certain direction then put an ‘x’. That’s called a false trail. Runners have to run back to the trail and go somewhere else.

Participants last Thursday night, not only ran or walked the trail. They

also stopped at Chief ’s Pub & Eatery for a shooter.

Then they swam out to a boat moored just off the pier.

Red Deer Hash House Harriers participate in a run every Thursday, rain or shine, snow or sleet.

Each of the members takes a turn at setting the trail. Last week’s trail was the work of Brentnall, Bond and Denise Leeder. The club has about 40 active members and gets 20-30 at most runs.

“It all takes time, being the hare,” said Brentnall.

“It’s up to the hare to decide where the run is.”

That’s the reason they brought it to Sylvan Lake.

The trio laughed, they’re know as “the drinking club with a running problem”.

They’re part of the international Hash House Hare movement (abbreviated to HHH or H3).

Wikipedia describes them as “non-competitive running social clubs”.

The objectives, as recorded on a club registration card dated 1950, are to promote physical fit-

ness among members, to get rid of weekend hangovers, to acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it in beer and to persuade older members that they are not as old as they feel.

At present there are almost 2,000 chapters in all parts of the world.

Time for a dramatic change in direction on this journey of mine It’s been a great journey, but now, I feel, is the right time to change paths. And change paths towards a completely different direction.

After more than 40 years associated with the newspaper and printing industries, I’ve accepted a position with a locally based company, Formation Fluids, to get into the oil and gas industry.

I have been with Sylvan Lake News for 11 years and during that time I’ve met many fantastic people, reported on a lot of joy — some sadness — and provided my sometimes controversial opinions on a variety of topics.

Involvement in the community has brought an added dimension to my tenure in Sylvan Lake, whether it be with the Rotary Club, Legion or shorter term commitments like the Kraft Hockeyville campaign, Spirit of Sylvan Yuletide Festival and Market, Friends of Sylvan Lake Provincial Park and Rotary lighthouse project. I’ve probably missed one or two other activities, but suffice to say I’ve enjoyed being part of organizations which are contributing to the community’s growth and quality of life.

At this point I’d like to say thanks to everyone who has assisted in my time at Sylvan Lake News — particularly those who contributed their articles and letters and those who phoned with story ideas.

I’ve always worked with the philosophy that a community newspaper should mirror what’s happening in the area it serves. While we haven’t been able to accomplish that totally, we’ve certainly made great strides every week to do what’s humanly possible. And the added help has assisted greatly.

Young people have held a special spot in my goal of producing a quality newspaper. I’ve certainly appreciated the support of all schools in Sylvan Lake and vicinity who have invited us into their facilities, have made sure we’re aware of events and have contributed their own pictures and stories.

As I look back over a career that has included work in more than 10 different Western Canadian communities and several others in Eastern Canada, there are many memories I cherish of accomplishments and of the people I’ve worked with in various roles.

I also remember well many, many hours growing up in a family where my father, grandfather and uncle operated newspapers in southern Ontario. As such, I started by sweeping, cleaning equipment, inserting newspapers and delivering them. At a young age I was attracted to newspaper photography and by the time I got my driver’s licence was heading out to various assignments, whether fire calls or sports events.

One of my brothers continues to work in the industry, lengthening our family’s involvement. And there’s interest about a career in journalism from one of my granddaughters.

As I reflect, there have been many more positives than negatives during my career — obviously the reason for my longevity in such a deadlinedriven and sometimes stressful job. Top among the positive experiences, besides the people, has been the opportunity to portray such a varied series of subjects. There’s never a day that is the same as the last. That also results in an independence which I’ve grown to love.

I’ve seen many changes from type set letter by letter through Linotype machines that created words in lines of lead and then to computers — punch tape to optical chararcter recognition to the current variety where pages are created and transferred to the printer over the internet.

Changes in technology have eliminated the need for those many hours I spent in a darkroom developing film and making prints. It’s led to more time in front of computer screens and reduced the number of employees at newspapers across the country.

Yet the same heart goes into the newspapers as is reflected through editions many years ago. In many different newspapers I’ve had a chance to appreciate the wealth of information contained in archival editions. It’s sparked a lifelong interest in the history of communities I’ve served, something I will no doubt pursue further in the future.

While I’ve enjoyed my years of dedication to my craft, there are some things I’ll enjoy more now that I’ve made this change. Weekends without schedules, evenings without lengthy meetings and the lack of pressure necessary to meet weekly deadlines. I’ll have time to pursue some of the hobbies that have been left dormant for far too long.

Farewell and thanks again for your part in my journey.

Trophies and medals were awarded for swimming, junior rowboat race, surf board, slalom, novice skiing, junior jumping, and senior jumping. ♦ ♦ ♦ St. Mary’s Anglican Church will be holding their annual gladiolus show Saturday, Aug. 22 at the Legion hall.

♦ ♦ ♦ Parkland District Cubs held their annual pack holiday at Camp Woods on Monday of this week. There were cub packs from Dickson, Benalto, Leslieville, Rocky Mountain House, Eckville and Sylvan Lake. Fifteen boys from Sylvan Lake attended with their leaders. ♦ ♦ ♦ On Saturday afternoon, Aug. 15, sod was turned at a service to commemorate the start of construction on a new church for Our Lady of the Assumption parish. Father Joseph Sullivan, parish priest, turned the sod and planted a cross on the location of the altar of the new church.

Father Sullivan said the date marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the parish.

Accomplished gardener frustrated with notice from town’s bylaw department

Dear Editor, The Town of Sylvan Lake municipal bylaw department does not allow organic gardens in Sylvan Lake.

Vegetable gardens that is, or maybe it is just the mulch that they have issues with. No one but the officer in question can answer me and he has been less than helpful with a kind of “do it or else” reply to my questions.

I guess when I got the yellow letter from the bylaw officer I must have gone into shock a bit, because, you see, I volunteer to teach gardening to the public at our local “Eco Loco” events and the “growing green neighbors” dinners.

The town has asked me to do this, because I do this in my yard. Not only do I have 235 varieties and species of edible and medicinal plants growing organically in my yard, I have a community garden in the front yard next to the sidewalk. So I tried to find out what to do. After 17 messages and calls with very few answers or returned calls I have pretty much been told nothing.

So after cleaning up in my back alley area, because yes it has been a long summer and yes I really should have put the canoe back long before now and that part was justified. In fact I have done all that was asked except to remove my mulch, and I can’t because if I do I will be in violation of another law that has to do with invasive weeds.

So if I am forced to get rid of the mulch, then I will be in violation of another bylaw, so the garden will have to go to grass. We had an empty lot on our street for years — there were complaints about the invasive weeds yet the town did nothing for years and so as a result we are infested with Canada thistle, sow thistle, etc.

I had the town’s invasive weed specialist come and look at my yard and apparently I am using best practices to deal with my weeds and the added bonuses of not having to use anywhere near as much water, and the improvement of the tilth of the soil are just good for the whole garden. She is not sure what the to do is all about.

Then when I phoned the Parks and Recreation department and said that I would no longer volunteer for them, they asked why and I told them that I would not put anyone else through what the town bylaw office was putting me through, they too could not figure out what I was doing wrong. They came and inspected my yard, and brought public works with them for a tour of my yard — they cannot figure out the problem with the mulch.

The mayor has been called and he said he would inspect the garden as well, and here’s the kicker, after all these inspections, and phone calls and letters from neighbours saying they like the garden, I have been told there is nothing any of these people including our mayor can do to help me.

Those rumours are true — bylaw is actually God in Sylvan Lake and there is no room in this particular God’s world for an organic vegetable garden. Food, not lawns, has no place in Sylvan Lake. Which is almost funny when you consider the number of meetings these same people drag me to so that we can develop a local food and food security policy. I am usually the only one present not getting paid to attend, and usually the only one that actually does live this way.

So I will have to get rid of my garden, cancel my business plans for my handcrafted herbal products

Employment Opportunities HEALTHY FAMILIES HOME VISITOR PART TIME – 14 HOURS/WEEK The Healthy Family Home Visitor Program is a joint initiative funded by Family Services of Central Alberta and the Town of Sylvan Lake. Healthy Families is a free home visitation program designed to support new parents by providing information on parenting, child development, and parent – child (0 – 5 years of age) interactions. This individual will work closely with a team leader/supervisor, public health nurse, other care providers and the family to assess needs and create goals and strategies to support the healthy development of the family. The Healthy Families Home Visitor will initiate and maintain regular (at least weekly) support with families. Hours and days of work will vary depending on program need.

Responsibilities: . Complete family assessment during home visits. . Conduct home visits throughout the community cluster. . Connecting the family with community resources. . Construction of Sylvan Lake’s new multi-use recreation facility got a boost Sunday during the Stanley Cup’s visit to Sylvan Lake.

Colin Fraser, a member of the championship winning Los Angeles Kings, arranged for the cup’s visit to the town he and his family call home.

He asked that photos with the

Stanley Cup be available to the public for a minimum donation of $5 to the NexSource Centre project.

Fraser, during a brief speech after he carried the cup down the front steps of Sylvan Lake’s town hall, said “a big part for me is seeing how excited everybody else gets”.

He noted this was his third opportunity to parade the Stanley Cup, the first time in his hometown of Surrey when he was with the Chicago

Blackhawks, and then in 2012 when he brought it to Sylvan Lake for the first time after winning as a member of the Los Angeles Kings.

Fraser also reminisced about all the early morning practices and how they paid off for his career.

The afternoon’s activity raised $2,784 to assist in plans to create a complex with a new ice surface,

curling rink, running track, and various other elements.

“Thank you again to Colin Fraser for his continued support of Sylvan Lake and local sports and sporting facilities, and thank you to the hundreds of hockey fans who made their way out to Sylvan Lake on Sunday and contributed to the fundraising initiatives,” said a media release from the fundraising committee.

Man charged following early evening disturbance on Lakeshore Saturday, August 9th 10:55 p.m. – A vehicle stop

by RCMP on Highway 20 for a speeding violation resulted in a male passenger being charged with a Criminal Code offence.

The 20-year-old male from Red Deer was questioned after he was found to be in possession of open alcohol while sitting in the rear seat of the vehicle. The male gave a voluntary breath sample and was charged for breaching the no alcohol conditions of a recognizance order.

Sunday, August 10th 2:01 a.m. – RCMP attended Chef Francisco Pub and Grill in relation to a disturbance just outside the bar. Two females requested assistance from police after an intoxicated male continued to harass and yell profanities at them. Officers attempted to place the male under arrest at which time he began resisting police. The male also fought with members while being lodged in cells.

A 29-year-old male from Kindersley, Saskatchewan is now charged with two counts of obstructing peace officers; two counts of assaulting police officers; and disturbing the peace.

Monday, August 11th 5:06 a.m. – A 24-year-old Sylvan Lake female is facing an assault charge in relation to an incident at Lost Harbour Inn on Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake. The female approached the desk clerk to rent a room for cash. She was advised that a credit card was required at which point the female became increasingly aggressive. The 48-year-old male clerk was subsequently kicked and punched by the female. She was restrained and escorted out of the hotel by a male companion and arrested a short time later by RCMP. Tuesday, August 12th 8:52 a.m. – A traffic stop in Sylvan Lake resulted in the male driver receiving several fines along with a driving suspension. A RCMP officer stopped a vehicle on 50th Street at 50th Avenue after he observed the male driver failing to wear a seat belt. The male was also observed to have liquor on his breath at which time he admitted to consuming alcohol and smoking marijuana. The

A SAFE GOD

Recently I attended a large stadium event in a city in hundreds of miles from here. As we walked from our car, which was several blocks from the stadium, I could hear a very loud and demanding voice on a loud speaker. I listened and as we approached I realized that it was a street preacher warning the moving crowd of the reality of hell fire and damnation, and shouting at them about their need to repent and accept Jesus Christ before it was too late. He was loud, demanding and relentless.

I was embarrassed. I love the very Jesus He was talking about because He is a gentle man, interested in the heart and souls of every person on this planet. He is never demanding or loud. I see no record in the Scriptures where He stood on a street corner ranting at people as they walked by. If I were not a Christian already, this

“preacher” would turn me off from ever wanting to become one.

When I got to where He was I noted that nobody was paying him any attention but hurrying by to get out of the sound of his voice, as was I. It made me wonder how many people have turned away from God because of well-intentioned behavior that actually in the end has a negative impact. How unfortunate!

The God of the Scriptures speaks in a gentle, interested and caring voice, through His Bible and through the life of His Son, Jesus Christ. He caringly explains the consequences of our choices, but He does so with individual personal interest in mind. If that is not the God you have experienced or been exposed to I invite you to have another look. You may be startled at how amazing He really is.

Body of Sylvan Lake man found in Colorado river

The body of a Sylvan Lake man missing since June in Colorado has been recovered from the creek where he was last seen.

Sean Duplessis, 39, went missing after wading into Clear Creek west of Denver on June 7. The father of two had been in Colorado on business and was with a co-worker when they went into the creek around midnight. The friend got out, but Duplessis disappeared and extensive searching failed to locate him.

Colorado media reported last Tuesday that fishermen had found Duplessis’ body on Sunday nearly 30 km downstream from where he went missing.

“We’re just happy we’re going to be able to bring him home,” said Sean’s mother Judy Duplessis of Benalto.

“I guess this way we get some closure at least.

It’s better than not knowing.”

Sean will be brought back to Alberta soon and will be laid to rest in Eckville near his brother James, who died in 2011 of pneumonia.

Dozens of people have left heartfelt messages of condolence on a Facebook page set up for Sean.

“He was a really good man,” said Judy. “He was the best dad in the world. He was a wonderful son.

He had lots and lots of friends and people cared about him.”

A message on the Facebook page thanks supporters.

“Thank you for everyone’s efforts, prayers, thoughts as we had thousands of likes and shares we were able to locate him and bring him home,” said the entry last Tuesday.

Duplessis was a father to two children, a daughter aged 9 and a son 16. He grew up in Sylvan Lake and worked for Abel Corp. out of Lacombe. He was in Colorado to get a new shop up and running for the company.

Funeral arrangements will be posted on the Facebook page when available.

3:00 p.m. – A 31-year-old Sylvan Lake female attended the RCMP detachment to report an assault that occurred at her residence on Hinshaw Drive. The female advised that she had been pushed and bitten by her 36-year-old boyfriend in relation to a verbal argument which became physical as the female requested the male leave her residence. The male, a resident of Crossfield, is charged with assault and three counts of failing to comply with the conditions of a recognizance. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Lacombe County councillors have given the green light for staff to purchase three new graders to replace those in its current fleet.

Typically, the county’s graders are used about 1,600 hours every year. This year saw those hours increase significantly, due to an increase in time spent removing ice and snow over the past couple of years.

The need for replacement, according to manager of operations Phil Lodermeier, came from an accumulation of “a greater amount of machine hours on the graders over a shorter period of time”.

Graders are typically purchased every five years, with an extended warranty of 8,000 hours. At present, the graders up for replacement are approaching the 8,000-hour mark after just four years of service, because of the increased winter workloads.

Five new graders were purchased in 2010 at a cost of $280,900 each. At that time, staggered delivery times were requested as a way of maximizing the use of thenexisting machines.

Three new graders are estimated to cost around $1,065,000, with the three being replaced expected to bring in just over $400,000.

The difference will be funded through the county’s Capital Equipment Reserve.

Councillors approved the purchase during their June 26 regular meeting.

The county’s equipment fleet is typically evaluated once a year in early fall to determine which items need replacing.

Town to investigate costs, locations, opportunities for day mooring docks

During their regular meeting Aug. 11, Sylvan Lake councillors: • turned down a request from an adjacent landowner to be given portions of lots bordering the walking trail on the former railway right-of-way through town.

The residents requested the town consider transferring four partial lots for the cost of having the title transferred.

They would clean up dead fall, replace trees to maintain privacy between the trail system and their yard and planned to construct a two car garage.

• approved a development permit for construction of an outdoor patio connected to Bravo Gastro Lounge on the empty lot to the west.

• passed second and third readings of a bylaw to designate a school site in Beacon Hill subdivision for Chinook’s Edge School Division’s recently approved Kindergarten to Grade 8 school for 500 students. The area is bounded on the south by Beacon Hill Drive, on the west by Brookstone Drive and on the north by houses on Bowman Circle.

Landscaping concept approved for Ryders-Vista park

The sketches weren’t as pretty or eye appealing as councillors wanted, but they approved the final draft concept for the park in Ryders Ridge and The Vista at Ryders Ridge subdivisions.

It will now be provided to developers who are

responsible for constructing the park.

In June 2013, residents of Pierview and Ryders Ridge raised concerns about the proposed park. “At this meeting the overwhelming concern from residents was that the open space ‌ would have the trees removed and that they requested the area be left in a natural state,â€? said background provided to councillors at their meeting Aug. 11.

Earlier this year LA West Landscape Architects was hired to complete the design process. A public open house was held in April to review their concepts and collect information. That along with additional input from the developers and on-line submissions through the town’s web page was collected and incorporated into the final draft concept.

Looking at designs provided with the council package, Councillor Megan Chernoff said, “I’m disappointed with the end result map, the image going out to the public�. “This is hugely important,� said Councillor Dale Plante. “It’s very contro-

versial to residents. This presentation sucks. This isn’t what we want to put out.

We want something that reflects the effort put into this. The map has to be revised with what it’s going to look like, things people can visualize.�

Mayor Sean McIntyre noted the actual landscape design is OK, but the communications end needed to be better. “When we had the open house we had great maps,� added Chernoff. “They just weren’t the right trails.�

Central Alberta libraries showcasing the best of Alberta books

Library patrons in Central Alberta are now able to borrow from a selection of 64 books written or published close to home.

A display called Read Alberta Books began touring the Parkland Regional Library system in spring, and staff are excited for this chance to showcase Alberta books in local libraries.

The display is a collaboration between Parkland Regional Library, the Writers’ Guild of Alberta, and The Book Publishers Association of Alberta who worked together since last fall to create it.

“It’s been a wonderful collaboration among our three organizations,” said Ron Sheppard, Parkland’s director. “Our partners have provided us with an exceptional kit of books that highlight the talents we have here in our province.”

The collection represents the best of the best in children’s, teen, and adult literature, with each book a nominated or winning title from the 2012 and 2013 Alberta book awards seasons.

Any one of Parkland’s 50 public libraries can sign up to host the travelling display. Patrons can borrow as many books as they want, and when the books are returned to their library they will join the display, courtesy of Parkland’s delivery van.

Proposed county bylaw aimed at reducing number of false alarm calls

False alarms the result of “mechanical or human error” are the reason behind Red Deer County’s proposed new False Alarm Bylaw, which was given first reading by councillors at their Aug. 5 regular meeting.

The bylaw, if passed, would see more accountability placed on county home and business owners for false emergency calls reported by alarm monitoring companies.

Most of those calls currently received are placed inadvertently, but

they all require the attention of police or fire personnel. This means valuable resources often become tied up at times when they could be required elsewhere.

“When police or fire are dispatched to an alarm call, it is given priority status, and will usually receive an emergency response,” states an administration report presented to council. “Each time emergency services make an emergency response, it puts people, including responders, at risk. When responding to false alarms, it detracts the ability of those services to respond to other incidents, needlessly tying up

resources.”

The solution proposed by the bylaw would see property owners granted leniency for their first false alarm. The second incident, however, would see them hit with a $200 fee, which would rise to $400 for each time it occurred after that, within the same calendar year.

The county notes that the bylaw has been effectively applied in other parts of the province, and says that it’s supported by RCMP detachments.

A county press release made clear the purpose

of the proposed bylaw, which it said is “not to generate revenue, but to make property owners accountable for their alarm systems”.

It also noted that police and fire personnel receive “hundreds” of alarm calls — the majority of which turn out to be false. This, it added, prevents these personnel from tending to other important duties.

Obituaries

MATEJKA, George George Matejka of Sylvan Lake passed away July 31, 2014 at the age of 84 years. George was born on the Matejka homestead in Ponoka, Ab on August 24, 1929.

George and his brothers worked on the family farm together for many years. George married Yvonne Martin in 1959. They farmed in Ponoka until 1973 when they moved to Sylvan Lake. They continued the purebred hog business until 2013. In Dad’s younger years he enjoyed curling in the winter and travelling the swine show circuit in the summer. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling for a number of years with family and friends. In later years he mostly enjoyed working on the farm and considered that his hobby. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Yvonne of 54 years; his sons, Steven (Terisa) and their boys, Adam, Ryan (Jalene) and Brett; Tony (Joe Anne) and their girls Christine, Tiffany and Victoria; his daughters; Louise (Todd Schultz) and their children Tonielle, Spencer and Larissa; Nancy (Steve Jeffery) all from Sylvan Lake; his brother, Bill (Betty) of Ponoka; his sister-in-law, Barb (Dale Johnston) of Ponoka and his brother-in-law Randie (Elsie) of Devon, Ab. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister Anges in 2002, his brother Charlie in 2004 and sister-in-law Sylvia in 2014. George passed away at the RDRHC with his whole family by his side. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A private graveside service was held Aug. 9 at Burnt Lake Cemetery. Donations my be directed toward STARS or the Diabetes Association if so desired.

Donna Gidyk It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Donna Gidyk, the companion of Bill Baird, on August 14, 2014.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Walter Gidyk, but is survived by her children; daughter Wendy, son Michael and grandchildren Ashley, Kristian and Tyler.

Donna will be missed by her many friends, not only from Sylvan Lake, but also from across Canada and from British Columbia to Ontario, plus Mesa, Arizona where she and Walter holidayed in the winter for many years.

A celebration of Donna’s life will be held in Winnipeg, her hometown of many years.
