Travelling Men and women often dream of jet-setting around the world when they retire. Traveling the globe without worrying about timelines or what’s going on back at the office is something many retirees reward themselves with after a life of hard work. As liberating as world travel can be, retirees still must exercise caution when traveling abroad. The following travel tips are provided by Debbie Trenholm at World Odyssey Travel and Cruise. • It is highly recommended that Canadians purchase extended emergency health insurance when travelling outside of Canada. Out of Country medical insurance covers emergency medical expenses as well as a return flight to your province of residence. Rates are calculated based on your age, your health and the length of time out of Canada. • When your travelling to an exotic location, vaccinations may be required. It is advised that you check with your family Doctor about 6 weeks prior to travel. The government of Canada has a very informative web page travel.gc.ca/travelling/ health-safety/vaccines. • When travelling with prescription medications they should be in your carry on bag, in their original, labelled containers. Pack an extra supply of medications in case you are delayed on your
return. It is a good idea to carry a prescription with you in case you lose your medication. Needles and syringes are allowed to be carried on board for medical purposes. Individual Airlines have different rules, so it is best to check ahead what restrictions your airline may have. Here are a few more things to consider when you are travelling to parts unknown: • Stay in touch. Escapism is a big part of the attraction of travel for travellers young and old. But

When traveling overseas, it can be convenient to keep important items like traveler’s cheques, credit cards, passports,
and identification in one place. • Do your homework. Unplanned day trips are common among travellers who have been traveling for long periods of time. While such jaunts can add an element of spontaneity to a trip, they also can be quite dangerous if travellers have not done their homework on a particular destination. • Make sure your health will not be compromised. Before traveling
abroad, visit your physician and get a full physical. Refill any medications you will need during your trip, and speak with your physician about how to handle any medical emergencies while overseas. • Travel with friends or family if possible. If you have friends or family who also are retirees with time on their hands, organize a group trip abroad. Groups are less
likely to be targeted by criminals than couples, and overseas trips with friends or family members can make trips overseas that much more memorable and enjoyable. Overseas travel is a popular goal of men and women on the verge of retirement or those who have already called it a career. But safety must remain a priority when traveling abroad.

A Passionate Photographer If you’ve ever been out to popular community events, like Diwali celebrations or Canada Day at Fraser River Heritage Park, you have probably seen Mission photographer Gerhard von Rosen at work. Gerhard has been living in Mission for 40 years. He and his wife, Xenia, have four children. Gerhard is trained as a geologist, but his passion of photography was evident when at the tender age of six he was given a Kodak brownie box camera. Several family photos of that era still exist to this day. It was an expensive hobby at that time, and so it remains today. Celebration of National Aboriginal Day took place at The Cedars. Linnea Battel started the event off with a ceremonial Welcome Song and drumming. Zena Buker, Bert Edgar and Linnea Battel all shared stories and traditional aboriginal collections. We were treated to a sampling of smoked salmon and freshly made Bannock by Linda our chef from The Cedars.

Meet ... Harry Vogel

INTRODUCTION Harry was born and raised in Comox. He studied civil engineering in university after a stint with the army. Harry worked on building infrastructure around B.C. He retired at the age of 62 in 1986 and moved to Mission in 1987.

VOLUNTEER In Mission, Harry started his second career as a volunteer at the Community Policing Office (CPO) in 1988. He worked in the Citizens on Patrol program and helped anyone who walked through the CPO doors on First Avenue. Harry retired from his volunteer job after 26 years, but still plans to stay active in the community.

A facet in the eye industry is that 39 million people aare blind and roughly six times that amount have vvision impairment that they may or may to know about. a There are many factors that contribute to the onset of o low vision, including decease, aging, injury and heredity. The following are some of the more h common causes of low vision. c Age-related Macular Degeneration: This is a common eye condition among people age 50 and c older. In fact, it is the leading cause of vision loose in o older adults. When a person has AMD, the macula, o which is the most sensitive part of the retina w responsible for fine-tuning images received by the r eye, e deteriorates and does not work properly. Cataracts: Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the th eye that usually develops with aging. It may be present at birth or be the result of an injury to the p eye. ey Depending on the severity of the cloudiness of the th lens, vision can be impacted greatly. Glaucoma: When a person has glaucoma, eye
damage occurs to his or her eye when there is a buildup of fluid pressure within the eye, also known as intraocular pressure. This pressure can damage the optic nerve and cause visual field loss, which over time might escalate to blindness. Diabetic Retinopathy: Vision can fluctuate daily as a result of diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy can cause blood vessels in the retina to develop abnormal offshoots that leak blood and interfere with vision, eventually causing server damage to the retina. Retinal Detachment: This occurs when the retina separates from its underlying layer. The portion that detaches may be rendered useless and cause total impairment of vision. Some retinas can be surgically reattached, and vision may be restored partially if surgery occurs promptly. Eye exams do not only check for your eyeglass prescription, they also check for health issues. You will experience a lot of living through your eyes and a great majority of your learning; your eyes are capable of processing 36,000 pieces of information in an hour
and the eye itself is made up of over 200 million unanimously working parts. Your eyes are important and it is good to get them checked at least every two years. If you are thinking about purchasing eyeglasses, please keep in mind they are an integral part of your style, especially if you have a permanent prescription that must be worn constantly. The wrong pair can make your face look disproportionate or washed out, but the right pair of glasses can make you look fashionable and well put together. Choose eyeglasses that flatter the shape and colour of your face, along with your own personal sense of style.
