Numerous activities are being planned in celebration of Seniors Week in Mission. Festivities kick off Friday, May 30 with an informative session about senior’s issues with B.C.’s seniors advocate Isobel Mackenzie. Mackenzie was named B.C.’s first senior’s advocate in March. The role of the Office of the Seniors Advocate is to monitor seniors’ services, promote awareness and work collaboratively with seniors, families, policymakers, service providers, and others to identify solutions to systemic issues and make recommendations to government on ways to improve care for the aging population. Mackenzie will give a 45 minute presentation and be available afterwards to answer questions, said Bob Ingram, president of the Mission Seniors Activity Centre. “The featured speaker is an important event for the community,” said Ian

Senior advocate speaks in Mission Isobel Mackenzie has worked on behalf of seniors for the past 18 years at the local, provincial and national level. Her work spans from health care to social and community services providing her with a strong working knowledge of the breadth of issues that affect seniors and the challenges of developing system level solutions. Mackenzie brings with her a wealth of governance, policy and advocacy experience and has dedicated many years to working on boards that represent the interests of seniors. Until her recent appointment as seniors advocate, Mackenzie was a member of the Care Aid Registry Advisory Committee, which oversees the registry developed by the government to protect vulnerable seniors. In addition to that work, Ms. Mackenzie has represented both home care and the non-profit sector in her role as board director for the BC Care Providers Association since 2012 and for the past seven years, she has served as the commissioner for the Medical Services Commission of BC, responsible for administering the Medicare Protection Act. Mackenzie’s has been tireless in her efforts to support seniors, working collaboratively with the senior leadership of the British Columbia Government and Service Employees’ Union to champion the recognition of care aides and to standardize training and qualifications. Mackenzie is passionate about creating policy and service delivery approaches that meet the complex and individualized needs of B.C. seniors and she is a strong systems thinker and innovator known for practical, creative and cost effective solutions.

Teleworkshop helps residents improve brain health, from comfort of homes Aging British Columbians are fearful of dementia but people can live well with the disease with the right care and support, says the Alzheimer Society of B.C. More than 70,000 people in the province many of them in the local area - live with dementia, and that number is increasing dramatically as the population ages. To help families, the Society runs free tele-workshops. Heads Up: An Introduction to Brain Health, runs on Wednesday, June 4. Sweetwater
Sweetwater, a versatile husband and wife duo, will be performing at an Afternoon Dance during Seniors Week at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre. Bill and Marie play a wide range of music together, including rock classics, country, and Latin ballroom. Their music is popular with all ages, and they will even alter their music to encourage audiences to sing along and dance. Marie is the lead singer with an energetic stage presence. Bill plays the guitar, banjo, keyboards, provides some vocals and arranges the synth background. They have a full band sound and their set up includes stage lighting. Bill and Marie have been married for 33 years and have been playing music together for more than 20. It started as an informal hobby when the couple semi-retired and moved to the Fraser Valley from Vancouver, but they soon started to get serious about. “Bill was always in a band,” said Marie, who was encouraged by her husband to keep singing. “He’s a musician. I’ve always loved music, but I never dreamed I’d be performing in public.” Bill and Marie have performed throughout the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and B.C. Interior. Mission’s Afternoon Dance takes place Thursday, June 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre, 33100 10 Ave. Tickets are $5 each and refreshments will be provided. Life Lease Housing: a New Housing Option for Mission Kate Mancer, one of Canada’s most respected authorities in the seniors housing field, and the author of The Future of Seniors Housing: Planning, Building and Operating Successful Seniors Housing Projects, became an instant fan of life lease when she first learned about the model 15 years ago. At that time she was working on a major report for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) called Alternate Tenure Arrangements. CMHC is Canada’s national housing agency. One of the alternate arrangements Kate studied was life lease. She travelled across the country visiting a number of life lease projects talking to the managers, the residents and the non-profit societies that ran them. “That’s what gave me the life lease bug because I could see how well they worked and how happy the people were who lived in them,” says Kate, a consultant with
Vancouver-based Terra Lumina Life Lease, now working with the Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) on Cedar Valley Manor, a life lease nearing completion at 8358 Cedar Street in Mission. Kate adds: “All of the research that’s been done on life lease shows that the degree of satisfaction is off the charts. People love living in them, partly because of their trust in the community based nonprofits, like MASH, that sponsor and manage life lease projects. It’s also because of the simplicity, the safety and the security that living in a life lease provides.” Buyers at Cedar Valley Manor have a 30 year lease which is registered on title. When they choose to move, they give 60 days’ notice and get 95% of their money back. Several of the buyers at Cedar Valley Manor have chosen to move there on the advice of their financial planners who value the life lease model for its security and its liquidity.
