Mayoralty candidate frustrated by strife at city hall Municipal politics: Andy Adams taking a run at becoming mayor AlistAir tAylor Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Mayoralty candidate Andy Adams admits to being frustrated by the strife and conflict that has characterized city council. That’s one of the reasons he has decided to run for mayor. “That has been somewhat frustrating which is part of the reason why I am stepping up,” Adams said. “Because I think Campbell River can do better. I think the citizens of Campbell River deserve better and they expect a council to operate in cohesive manner, in a professional manner and guide the community. That’s what they elect us for.” Adams did not want to engage in a war of words with the current mayor but he made it clear that if he becomes mayor, he will be “focused, positive, professional and credible.” In fact, he said, those will be keywords of his mayoralty. “I will guide council to work together in developing a clear vision of what we want to do and how we are going to get there…together,” he said. “We must be focused, positive, professional and credible. I will draw on the strengths and expertise of council, mentor and delegate to enable all members of council to be

Glade Thomas decided to measure his sunflower Wednesday because people in the Oregon Road neighborhood were starting to take notice. The verdict? Fifteen feet and still growing. “I was expecting something in the range of 5 - 6 feet to add a little colour to my small garden but this is crazy,” Thomas said. “The guy that delivered the garden soil this spring said it was so good that I’d be able to grow rocks in it. Haven’t managed that yet but have grown some giant mutant sunflowers.”

contributing members of a team. “Council and City Hall must reach out and engage the community at large, whether it be community groups or individuals to ensure that we grow and prosper.” Adams referred to the deteriorating morale and climate at City Hall with incumbent Mayor Walter Jakeway’s history of criticising senior city staff. “We have had significant challenges over the past three years in retaining and recruiting staff due to lack of support and leadership from some of our elected officials,” Adams said. “As with any organization there is always room for improvement, and a review of structure and roles to ensure that we are providing the best value for tax dollars at City Hall will be done.” The next four years will be the most critical in establishing the vision and future for Campbell River, Adams said. “For years the common phrase has been ‘Campbell River has so much potential,’” he said. “We need a plan and vision on how best to reach that potential. The current boom in building of commercial and residential development, and the infusion of economic stimulus of the $1 billion John Hart Hydro Project and the $300 million Campbell River Hospital project (all initiatives of previous councils) will last through 2017. In that four-year window, council must set the foundation for long

The Homalco Indian Band, located just south of Campbell River, has received an additional 826 hectares of land located on Sonora Island and Thurlow Island, just off the east coast of Vancouver Island, as part of an Incremental Treaty Agreement (ITA). The province introduced ITAs in order to accelerate the treaty process by providing earlier treaty benefits before final agreements can be reached between bands and the government. According to a press release from the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, “ITAs build trust among the parties, create incentives to reach further milestones and provide increased certainty over land and resources.” “The opportunities these land transfers will create for the Homalco Indian Band through their ITA demonstrate the partnership that the provincial government and First Nations undertake on the journey towards treaty,” said Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation John Rustad. “I

in the future.” The three-stage transfer of the land to Homalco is B.C.’s 16th ITA, and will begin with 352 hectares of land at Camelion Harbour, Thurston Bay and Owen Bay as soon as the ITA is signed, followed by 180 hectares of land at Hemming Bay and Crawford Anchorage once Homalco approves their Treaty-in-Principle with the government. Once the final treaty is signed, an additional 295 hectares of land at Young Passage will also be Homalco land. Homalco Chief Richard Harry sees the ITA

We need the best commu-

Sadly there will also be the negative, false or exaggerated statements that serve no constructive purpose.”

Fix the parking lots: Samson ALISTAIR TAYLOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Coun. Larry Samson would like to see downtown parking lots at least cleaned up a little. “You can see parking lots are in bad need of maintenance,” Samson said at council’s Tuesday meeting. Samson put forward a motion to have city staff come back with some proposals on what to do with the overall condition of the public parking

lots located downtown. He would like to see everything from simply clearing back overgrown shrubbery to installing new lighting. He used as an example the public parking lot on Cedar Street where there is only two lights on the lot and a trail coming down from 9th Avenue frequented by a “transient population.” He submitted pictures of the lot behind Dubeau St. which has bushes and trees encroaching on

the edges of the parking spaces. “I am asking staff to come back with a proposal on what we can do to improve our parking lots,” Samson said. His cause was not picked up as enthusiastically by his fellow councillors but they did support the concept in the end. Coun. Andy Adams asked if it was necessary to do it now. Perhaps it could be put over to the 2015 bud-

get because some of the potential work could involve a significant cost. “I agree that the just general maintenance can be looked at by staff,” Adams said, but subsequent costly items would need to be dealt with in budget deliberations. Adams put forward an amendment which was passed to have the proposal put over to 2015 financial deliberations. Samson’s amended motion was then passed by council.

Temporary hospital helipad arrangement made ALISTAIR TAYLOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Island Health has entered into an agreement with the Campbell River Indian Band to use space beside the cruise ship terminal on Tyee Spit as a secondary helicopter landing pad during the construction of the new Campbell River Hospital. “ We h a v e m a d e arrangements to have BC Ambulance use the airport and also made an agreement with the Wei Wai Kum to use a piece of their land,” said Tom Sparrow, chief project officer, North Island Hospitals Project, told city council Tuesday. The helipad at the hospital will be removed during construction and consequently, a new plan for helicopters is need. The airport will be the

first choice for landing but the agreement with the Wei Wai Kum First Nation provides for a secondary landing pad in the case of fog or some other reason the airport can’t be used. “It’s actually a wonderful site for us,” Sparrow said. “(We were told) Transport Canada would pass it with full colours.” The hospital project will have to spend about $100,000 to make the site Transport Canada approved with proper lighting and signage. Coun. Larry Samson wondered if the landing pads being further away would be a problem. Sparrow explained that the helipads are not used so much for bringing emergency patients

Export license first of many hurdles for LNG plant Mike Davies CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

With the purchase in May 2013 of the old Elk Falls Mill property, a 400-acre Catalyst Paper industrial site and its adjacent property just north of Campbell River, Quicksilver Resources has set its sights on a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant, which would cool the natural gas from Quicksilver’s Northeast B.C. Horn River Basin sites – and other areas – for transport to Asia. Expected by Quicksilver to be operational by 2021, and at full operation levels by 2024, the operation still has some significant hurdles to take on, however. Though Quicksilver

has recently applied to the National Energy Board (NEB) for license to export up to 470 million tonnes of LNG over 25 years, that application itself states that Quicksilver is only at the “project feasibility stage,” of their planning, having yet to determine, “supply and market participants to develop commercial supply and offtake agreements,” meaning they’re applying to see if they will be permitted to export the product and whether anyone will buy it from them if they get that permission—before they decide they want to produce the product. They also state on the application that the license sought is meant to cover the operation of the site and transport

of the resource under, “a variety of multi-party arrangements, including but not necessarily limited to, incorporated joint ventures, unincorporated joint ventures or partnerships, all of which will include the applicant in their overall structure,” and that these arrangements are also only in the, “searching for potential partnerships,” phase, meaning they don’t have the financial resources to go ahead

with the project, and they don’t have others on board to make up for that financial shortfall yet. The natural gas also needs to get to the Campbell River facility before it can be processed, which currently is proposed to happen, “by a yet-to be determined transportation method,” meaning they don’t currently have a way to do that, either. So the NEB export permit is just one of many stages of the develop-

ment process. Now that the permit application is in to see if they’ll be allowed to sell the final product to international markets, Quicksilver is waiting on possibly the most crucial step of the process – that being the provincial and federal government figuring out a taxation and fiscal structure for the LNG industry in general. “Without the tax and fiscal structure in place, you can’t get any of these

projects going,” according to Dave Rushford, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Quicksilver, who says that, as of now, they’re focusing their efforts on developing the markets for the prospective product and continuing the reclamation project on the old mill site. “Catalyst ran a very clean operation, so we’re not finding any contamination that will delay or prevent any of our development on the site,” Rushford said, adding that as the reclamation process continues, Quicksilver will begin the environmental studies of the surrounding marine environment, as well, so as to have that information thoroughly examined and analyzed

by the time they are prepared to put forth a final proposal down the road. Despite all the possible roadblocks, Rushford and Quicksilver are optimistic and enthusiastic about the prospect of a facility at the site. “From our perspective,” Rushford said, “this is an incredible project for Campbell River,” adding that because of the location of the site, little work – in relation to the total process – will be required to prepare it for an LNG plant, and when you combine that with the plentiful availability of industriallytrained employees in the region, Rushford said the forecast is good for the operation, and they aren’t considering, at this point, any other sites.

Our View

The taxes we pay

A Fraser Institute study was released Tuesday, showing the share of Canadians’ income going towards governments at all levels has risen from 33.5 per cent in 1961 to 41.8 per cent We say: We pay in 2013. It’s important to put the study into more, yes, but we context. also receive more The Fraser Institute is a think tank which believes in smaller government, services and has steadfastly engaged in many studies over the years to debunk “big government.” Some of those studies have been quite useful, others not so much.

The institute also participates in the worldwide “Tax Freedom Day” event, which marks the day when people begin to work for themselves each year, as opposed to the taxman. This year, the date in Canada was June 9. All that said, there is no question that some of the money paid in taxes is not well-spent. While abuses by politicians like Alison Redford or Mike Duffy get the headlines, there are many programs in government of limited or almost no use. One B.C. example is the carbon tax rebate to large corporations, paid by school districts and hospitals with tax dollars. However, as the Canadian Centre for Policy

Alternatives (the polar opposite to the Fraser Institute) notes, it’s very difficult to compare 1961 to 2014. Governments provide medicare now — there was little spending on health care in 1961. That’s where a lot of tax dollars go. There are also many more government programs that redistribute funds to lower-income Canadians, including the GST credit and the carbon tax credit in B.C. Governments certainly have room to cut. A focus on how much taxes we pay as a percentage of income is useful, because taxpayers need to consider whether we get full value for the money we spend each year. – Black Press

UK model for E&N

The venerable E&N railway is approaching a very important period in its history; whether the railway will continue or not. As politicians hesitantly debate its future, one option should be explored: run the railway as a “Preserved Railway,” using the successful UK model. Today, in the UK, there are over 50 standard gauge and over 20 narrow gauge preserved railways in operation, offering scheduled passenger services with many operating all year round. The preserved railways were created by groups of people wanting to retain and operate local and historic railways, many using steam locomotives. The foundation for an “E&N preservation society” is already in place, with scores of volunteers already maintaining the rights-of-way from Victoria to Courtney and Port Alberni. The E&N preservation society could be the umbrella group to operate and maintain the railway, offering live steam excursion; Via Rail passenger operation; a scheduled freight service; and a commuter railway for Greater Victoria. Far fetched? No, as many UK preserved railways successfully do the same thing. Continued on Pg. 9

A little context always goes a long way

The First Nations Financial Transparency Act (FNFTA) received royal assent in Parliament on March 27, 2013. It stipulates that First Nations must post basic financial information, including the remuneration and benefits paid to Chiefs and councilors on the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development website for public scrutiny to increase transparency. While the FNFTA, in my opinion, is a good piece of legislation in terms of Mike Davies increasing transparency in how public Mike’s Musings money is spent (I personally think that On Twitter: all public spending should be immedi@PaperguyDavies ately posted for public scrutiny), thus miked@campbellrivermirror.com far the media, and therefore the public dialogue, has been driven by a knee-jerk reaction of outrage and contempt over the compensation of a select few whose

salaries and benefits have been brought to light by the Act’s implementation. Personally, however, I feel it’s always important to examine things with some context and depth rather than looking at sheets of numbers and forming opinions based on those numbers alone. Chief Ron Giesbrecht of the Kwikwetlem First Nation earned a salary of $84,800 last year. The uproar surrounding him is that he accepted an approximately $800,000 commission bonus on top of his salary. That amount was paid to him because of a clause in his contract as economic development officer stating that he would receive a 10 per cent commission on all revenues he produced for the band, which last year included an over$8-million land deal with the provincial

government. But all the public heard (because they chose not to listen to the context) was, “The Chief of an 82-member band earned almost a million dollars last year?!” Did Chief Giesbrecht embezzle this money from his band? No. Did he sneak a clause into his contract that would enable him to take advantage of an imminent land sale (that only he knew about at the time) to siphon off a portion of the revenues once it went through? No. Did he try to hide this bonus after receiving it, contrary to transparency regulations? No. Here’s a better question: would you, personally, accept a contract with your employer that included a clause for

bonuses paid out for bringing economic and financial benefit to the company? Absolutely you would. In fact, I think more businesses should offer these types of incentives. After all, Chief Giesbrecht, as the current example we’re using, brought more than $8-million in revenue to his band by facilitating that land sale to the government. If you earned $8-million dollars for your boss—and make no mistake, Chief Giesbrecht’s “boss” is the band itself— what would be a reasonable compensation for that? Considering the whole concept of employment is that services are to be rendered by someone to an employer in order to obtain remuneration repre-

Late transfer applicants will not have their application reviewed until September enrolments are confirmed.

Cross-Boundary Transfers

Students with approved cross-boundary requests are to attend their approved school, starting the first week of school. Those who have requested a transfer, but have not yet been approved or are on a wait list, are to attend their present school until they receive information on their request (the latest date of notification is September 5). Late requests may be submitted, in writing with the proper form, but students will be added to the wait list and are to attend their present school until notified. Parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from the school they are applying to.

Returning Late from Vacation?

Students already registered, but returning late from summer vacation must advise their school, in writing, by August 29 to ensure that they are included in the school’s enrolment count. Students not in attendance the first week of school will be withdrawn unless there has been contact with the school.

Call (250) 830-2300 for more information.

Transportation for Special Needs

Special needs routes will be finalized in September and parents will be contacted with information for their child.

Transit Bus Service

BC Transit passes will be available for purchase through the secondary schools starting in September.

What if the School Bus Doesn’t Arrive?

Due to unforeseen circumstances, a school bus may be late. Parents should have an alternate plan for their children in the event a bus comes late or does not arrive. If, after 20 minutes, the bus has not arrived, students should return home and phone their school or the Transportation Department at (250) 287-8808 for assistance.

Pick-Up Times

Students should be at their bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pick-up, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, the bus could be up to 10 minutes late.

Time to start Rockin’ the Island S aturday, Aug. 16 is the date for Campbell River’s first annual music festival – Rockin’ The Island. With 10 All-Canadian bands and artists performing, this year’s talent will deliver an incredible show that all ages will enjoy. This year’s headliners are These Kids Wear Crowns! “We’re gonna give it a jumpstart / 4, 3, 2, 1, go! / What’s up? / When we get it going no way we’re gonna stop / And all you need is a spark!” sings These Kids Wear Crowns front man Alex Johnson on the huge, pop song that kicked off the full length album Jumpstart. On Jumpstart, Chilliwack, BC party core band These Kids Wear Crowns keep the energy going with big, boisterous singalong electro dance-pop songs, as catchy and engaging as their breakthrough single, “Break It Up.” The 11-song album — produced by Matt Squire (3OH!3, Panic At The Disco, Katy Perry), Garth Richardson (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hedley) and Jeff Rockwell (Forever The Sickest Kids) — contains the energetic first single, “Jumpstart;” the electroheavy “Don’t Sweat It;” anthemic “Lifetime”; and whirling electro cover of Whitney Houston’s ‘80s hit, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

These Kids Wear Crowns headline the first annual Rockin’ the Island music festival in Campbellton tomorrow.

By: Kristen Douglas Sequoia Springs is not your average golf course. It’s a home. The golf club is literally in several Campbell River backyards. Craig Brown, son of the late Barrie Brown who purchased Sequoia with his wife Lynda, said his father intentionally built the course that way. “He got into patio home development so people could live on the golf course,” Brown said. “The golf course really is in people’s back yard.” There are 20 patio homes just off the course at hole number eight and a few homes near holes six, three, four and five. A third and final phase of patio homes will add additional homes near hole five. Brown said Barrie’s inspiration came from his travels.

PROCESS “He got a lot of inspiration from his trips to Disney World, the resorts always greet you with Welcome Home and that’s why there’s the Welcome Home sign as you enter (Sequoia Springs),” Brown said. “They’ve always tried to treat it as a home, that everyone is a guest of Barrie’s.” Barrie and Lynda bought the golf club in 1975 to ensure the property remained a golf course. It was originally a working farm that doubled as a golf course on the weekends. After the Browns purchased the land, they added acreage to the property which stands at 360 acres today. “When Barrie and Lynda purchased the course it was a

nine-hole course. In 1986 they expanded to an 18-hole configuration,” Brown said. “In 1991, we planted 1,400 sequoia trees.” Barrie also planted an array of flowers in an effort to spruce up the grounds. “They needed to do some improvements to the course and Barrie had started a greenhouse,” Brown said. From there, it took off, with the Browns adding more and more until they eventually had 30 gardens to tend to. Brown said Sequoia Springs’ nickname, the Garden Course, was coined by a travelling golfer impressed by all of the gardens. Brown said Barrie took a lot of pride in the gardens and the

natural beauty of the course. He also put it to good use. When the new clubhouse was built in 1998, Barrie took all the wood from the trees on the property and as much as possible, used materials that were readily available. The spacious clubhouse includes a pro shop, a bar and kitchen, as well as a banquet room that is used for meetings, reunions, weddings, and celebrations of life. There is also a chapel in the garden that has hosted many a wedding ceremony. And that’s not all. Brown and his younger brother are carrying on the work Barrie had started but wasn’t able to finish. They are working towards removing holes 10 and 11 and replacing them with two new holes. Brown said he figures the expansion will take one to two years. ple such as someone who can help them host a Mexican themed party, or a certain type of musician for an event or a group that they could become involved with or learn from, so we decided to create the database to make these connections more accessible and help connect our community with all the cultural talents that residents have to offer” said Rachel Blaney, Executive Director of the Immigrant Welcome Centre.

Connect to what matters: Bonus data to do more of what you love online.

T h e or g an i z at i on received funding for the project from the Campbell River Community Foundation to compile the database. The Immigrant Welcome Centre is encouraging anyone who thinks they are a cultural performer or group to sign up free of charge and showcase themselves. Salmon returns not as simple as boom or bust The plight of the Pacific salmon has been an important news story over the past few years, and often one of the big talking points is the small numbers that return to spawn every year. However, there is a lot more to the discussion than a single number. “When we’re talking about salmon returning, we’re actually talking about five species,” says Dr. Scott Hinch of the University of British Columbia. “Not all of them come back at the same time. It’s very species-specific as to when they return.” For example, the pink salmon return every second year to the Fraser River instead of every year, whereas the sockeye salmon, perhaps the most well-known species, returns each year. The other species of salmon in our Pacific waters are the coho, Chinook and chum, though the pink salmon is the most abundant, according to Hinch. “Pink salmon don’t require the same spawning and rearing habitat that other species do,” he says. “They don’t rear for long in fresh water, and they tend to head to the ocean shortly after the eggs hatch.” This has an effect on the size of the fish that travel to the ocean and thus their survival possibilities. Hinch points out that sockeye salmon tend to stay in the large lakes they’re born near for about a year, making them larger when they do start their migration to the

ocean. Another thing to keep in mind when looking at the number of salmon is their life cycle, which actually moves in a four-year rhythm for sockeye. “Every four years we see a really big run of sockeye,” Hinch says. “In 2010 we saw one of the largest runs of Fraser River sockeye in a century. Thus, four years later (in 2014), we’re expecting to see another abundant run, though exactly how abundant is unclear. In the third year of this cycle the run is still fairly big, but in years one and two, it is quite small. That cycle seems to persist.” Aside from these natural abundance cycles, there are a few things that contribute to a large or small return of a specific species of salmon, including the number of predators, poor health and poor feeding conditions which can be affected by climate patterns like El Nino. Year-to-year changes in ocean and freshwater conditions caused by global climate change are also affecting feeding, growth and predator numbers. The Pacific Salmon Foundation, in partnership with Hinch, UBC and Kintama Research, recently released the results of a four-year study looking at sockeye salmon smolts during their migration to the sea from their rearing area in Chilko Lake. This was the first-ever study to track wild sockeye smolts (young salmon that have begun changing from freshwater to saltwater fish) through their migration via acoustic tags. Through the study, they discovered that many of the smolts disappeared during the first few days of their migration, which Hinch attributes to predators. “The water there is very clear, and the predators are generally visual feeders,” he says. “Once they get through the clear water, survivorship during the remainder of their freshwater migration was very good.” The team followed the smolts over 1,000 kilometres to the northern end of Vancouver Island. “We were the first to track this stage in this number,” says Hinch, noting that as of this spring, over 2,000 fish were tagged. The Pacific Salmon Foundation is currently working on the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project in partnership with Seattle-based Long Live the Kings, another organization committed to the protection of wild salmon. The project looks at the factors affecting the survival of the young salmon in the Salish Sea, and will build off of the results of the Chilko study in their research. “We are trying to determine the limiting factors of salmon production,” says Foundation CEO Dr. Brian Riddell. “This is the largest initiative ever undertaken; there have been thousands of studies before, but no comprehensive study.” The project will focus on the Strait of Georgia, where the the abundance of coho and Chinook salmon are low. The Foundation notes that it’s at less than one-tenth of the levels seen in the past. he Campbell River Women’s Centre wants every child to be able to start the upcoming school year fresh with brand-new school supplies. To help those less fortunate in the community, the centre is hosting its 14th annual school supply drive. Georgette Whitehead, executive director of the Women’s Centre, said the goal this year is to have enough school sup-

plies to fill 450 bags for students who come from low income families. Last year, the initiative garnered 300 bags of supplies for students from kindergarten to Grade 12. Anyone who would like to contribute can drop off donations of new school supplies to the Women’s Centre, which is located inside Rose Harbour on Dogwood Street, up until August 21. The centre also welcomes monetary donations with cheques payable to the Vancouver

Island North Women’s Resource Society; donations are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Donations can be dropped off between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday to Thursday. Anyone interested in volunteering to help organize the school supplies can contact the Women’s Centre by calling 250-287-3044. The school supply drive is a project of the Vancouver Island North Women’s Resource Society, a local non-profit charity that has been in existence since 1984.

Many of the club members will spend hours in the pool fishing or rowing. For the general public, the best time to watch the anglers and rowers in action is late evening. During the best tides the boat count can get up to 60. There are more ladies getting in the action each year and many regulars at the club will be out in hopes of landing the big one. the pinks are stacked up like cordwood and many locals are walking the paths to see the spawning pinks. The Campbell river has steady fly fishing in the upper pools and the best view of the fly fishing action is the area between the two bridges. On the local lakes, the best time during the heat is early morning or late evening. A number of locals will drive to the interior to fish for trout. Here locally the lakes are free of algae and the weather will change and cool. That will be the time to get out and enjoy freshwater fishing with your family.

DOGWOOD PET MART Locally Owned for 29 Years

Nunns Creek Park is going to the dogs. Dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes will meet at the park before taking to the streets of downtown Campbell River – with their owners of course. The walk, otherwise known as Paws for a Cause, raises money for the SPCA and all of the proceeds will stay in Campbell River to help the Campbell River Community Animal Centre on 13th Avenue. The four kilometre walk begins at Nunns Creek Park and takes participants around downtown as they loop back to the park for a Marine Harvest salmon barbecue and prizes. This year’s event, which has been in existence for about a decade, happens Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. Stephanie Arkwright, coordinator of the event and

Campbell River SPCA branch manager, says this year’s edition will have a special theme. “I’ve changed it up a little this year,” Arkwright says. “We’re going to have some activities that are similar to circus games.”

There will be a dog cookie toss where the winners must throw a dog treat through a cut out of a dog bone, a canned dog food tower toss game where knocking down the tower is encouraged, and a shark tank – a twist on the traditional fish pond. A Bounce-A-Rama

and face painting also promise a good time for the kids. There’s also something for the dogs – contests for the best behaved, best trick, and the fastest to lick a dog bowl clean.

Returning this year will be awards for the participants – the top individual fundraiser, the top team, and the top youth. Nicky Good, an avid SPCA supporter, changed her annual vacation plans last year to take part in the fundraising. “I’ve been an avid SPCA supporter and I was just devastated when they left town last year, so it was another means of getting them support so they would return to town,” Good says. “We wanted to keep the momentum going.” Good collected pledges through family and friends and also canvassed businesses to collect

LEE, IRENE ELSE May 20, 1955 July 29, 2014 Born May 20, 1955 in Grand Prairie AB. Irene passed away peacefully at her home in Black Creek, BC on July 29, 2014 at the age of 59. Predeceased by her father Jack Pressner (1998) brother Gary Pressner (2009) and beloved Maltese Bailey (2013). She is survived by former husband Gordon Lee, daughter Heather (Brian), grandson Victor, mother Kathy McDougal, brother Ralph (Nicole), niece Jordan and nephews Seth, Andy and Tanner. She will also be missed by many friends whom she considered to be family, such as Pat and Cindy, Gary and Wanda, Peter and Uche, Bill and Carmen, Bob, Nan, and many others. Living in Grand Prairie, AB until the age of 13 (1968), Irene and her family moved to Princeton for slightly more than one year then continued on to settle in Campbell River (1969). Irene went on to graduate from Carihi in 1973 with bursaries to attend BCIT but due to a two year waitlist, did not enroll. She was eager to get started with her adult life and accepted a job at BC TEL where she made many friends. Later she took brief employment with Campbell River Credit union which lead her to accepting a position at CIBC in 1981 where she again made many friends and continued to work until regrettably taking an indefinite absence due to medical reasons. Irene met Gord in 1975. Together they enjoyed fishing, camping, listening to music, taking small trips and spending time with friends. Irene and Gord were married April 18, 1986 in Burnaby at their good friends Peter and Uches. After which they flew, aside from her fear of flying, to Jamaica for their honeymoon. After the birth of their daughter Heather (1985), they continued to camp and took many small trips throughout BC and the western United States. Although separated in 2009, Irene and Gord maintained a friendship and many mutual friends. Irene will be missed by many but more so she will always be there to watch over us. Irenes family requests services be held at a later date. If any contributions are felt necessary, the family asks that donations be made to Kidney Foundation in Irene's name.

Students goals take flight Kristen Douglas CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Evyn Parnell watches intently as Grant Neilson demonstrates where the nuts and bolts go on the siding of an airplane. Parnell is one of seven high school students learning how to build an airplane under the guidance of a group of mentors who are all trained pilots. The class, called Teen Flight, meets Wednesday evenings and Saturdays at Sealand Aviation, just across from the Camp-

bell River Airport terminal. Five boys and two girls, from both Timberline and Carihi, are building a Vans aircraft RV12 – a two seat, 100 horsepower airplane. Bill Alder, president of Sealand, said the students are learning how to assemble the plane, read maps, and follow instructions. “They’re being taught how to deal with sheet metal, trimming and filing and dressing,” Alder said. “They’re assembling all the parts and reading

from diagrams.” At the same time, the students are earning credits towards graduation. Alder figures it will take the teens up to a year and a half to finish the plane. “Once we get through the first one, we’ll sell it and put it back into the program so we can continue the program,” Alder said. The kit to build the plane cost $75,000 and Teen Flight is still looking for donors to help with the costs. Alder said

he’s grateful to the community for its support during last month’s first annual Wings ’n Wheels show, which raised $5,700 for Teen Flight, but more is still needed. While Campbell River’s program is the first of its kind in Canada, Teen Flight is already an established program in the United States. In Oregon, the program is in its fifth year and the students there are on their third airplane. Alder said the last plane the students built

Museum hosts bonobo researcher Flight: Getting youth involved S

sold within a week and fetched a cool $103,000 U.S. Alder hopes the program here will be just as successful so that it can continue on. Teen Flight began at Sealand in March as a way for Alder to engage youth in aviation. The opportunity for Teen Flight fell into his hands after Sealand helped a pilot in Ocean Falls who needed a new engine. The pilot stopped by Sealand some time later and got to talking with Alder. “I told him I was keen to get kids involved in aviation and he said ‘have I got a program for you,’” Alder recalled. From there, the program took off. Alder approached some of the pilots he knew from working at the airport and recruited a group of mentors. Finding the kids wasn’t hard, either. Timberline agreed to run a ground school, which provided interested students with basic aviation instruction. Colin Taberner, a pilot and Teen Flight mentor, who has noticed a decline in young people taking an interest in aviation, jumped at the chance to help with Teen Flight and get youth more involved. “It’s all about the kids – we’re not building the airplane – it’s all about the experience,” Taberner said. “It’s really neat. It’s a fun thing. They’re learning all the skills associated with building an airplane – how to rivet, how to bend metal, how to read plans, teamwork. They will also be learning engine controls.” The program is open to teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19, as long as they have taken the ground course. “We just want kids to get involved in aviation,” said Alder, who is also looking for donors interested in sponsoring Teen Flight.

The Bra 2X6 Lady

LARGEST 3X7 BIKE BLOWOUT! ell Campb ’s River

Is Coming to Size You Up

Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.

Chapman is coming to CAMPBELL RIVER ON WED. AUGUST 27TH to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly.

BRA LADY

“Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

bonobos are considered to be a ‘loving’ animal. She says also that, “Chimpanzee males can be considered political. Bonobos, on the other hand, form an egalitarian society and females play a pivotal role.” Her research, which she now conducts on her own, involves filming bonobo social interactions so that she can look for gestural communication, and in her presentation, she will share some of her videos, and talk about results so far. “Finally,” Graham says, “we will discuss conservation–an inevitable interest for anyone working in the biological sciences.”

pending time in the wilderness comes naturally to Kirsty Graham. The young woman from Campbell River spent her early years at Strathcona Park Lodge and Outdoor Education Centre after her family emigrated to Canada from England in 2001. Her latest venture has taken her to the wilds of Africa, where she is studying a species of ape known as bonobos. If you missed her talk on Quadra Island, you have the chance to see her at the Museum at Campbell River (470 Island Hwy) on Wednesday, August 20 at 7 p.m., where she will be delivering her pictorial presentation. Graham just arrived back from the Republic of Congo, researching the unusual bonobos as part of her Phd studies at St. Andrews University in Scotland. Prior to attending St. Andrews, she had studied bonobos for six months with the Max Planck Institute. Her decision to pursue this research came about after attending Quest University in B.C., where she discovered that she could combine ecology with psychology, studying great apes to explore questions about human behaviour. Graham says that for a long time it was thought bonobos were chimpanzees because they look so much like them but there are significant differences in the species. Unlike chimpanzees, which are war-like,
