Mission woman’s recovery inspires others Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
It was a clear day on Sept. 25, 2009 when Jennifer Winche put on her high-visibility gear to begin her shift as a traffic controller on Ladner Trunk Road. She had been on the job for eight months and knew she had an important job to do to keep workers on the road safe. As she was holding up her stop sign to halt traffic, an SUV travelling about 80 kilometres an hour headed towards her and didn’t stop. Whether the sun was in the driver’s eyes or the motorist simply didn’t see her, Winche doesn’t know. When the vehicle slammed into her, she was ejected out of her steel-toed boots and thrown across the street. She landed in front of a coworker with broken bones throughout her body. She couldn’t move. Winche was technically dead. Miraculously, she was revived by first responders and was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. Her pelvis was shattered, her ribs were cracked and her arms were broken, as well as her nose, chest and cheeks. Winche underwent several surgeries and was in
an induced coma for six days. When she awoke, she could hardly move and she couldn’t remember a thing, including her boyfriend. Winche was diagnosed with severe brain damage – her long-term memory gone. Now, almost five years later, the 28-year-old is still in constant pain and sees a physiotherapist regularly. She has trouble with visual information and is sometimes slow at processing things she has learned. But the most difficult thing is not having early memories, like spending time with her grandmother before she passed away. “Not being able to have these memories is emotionally hard,” said Winche, who is sharing her story about how she is recovering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the Chicken Soup for the Soul’s newest collection of stories. Winche’s four-page story called “My Ray of Sunshine,” isn’t about the struggles and difficulties she has been through – it’s about hope and having a positive attitude. Winche had met Ray, her husband-to-be, just 10 days before she was injured on the job, but it was the acci-

dent that brought them closer together. “He showed love, patience, kindness, thoughtfulness, and every other virtue that I admired,” writes Winche in her story. “I recognized how selfless it was for him to support and encourage me, while constantly trying to make me happy.” With Ray on her side, Winche learned to do things all over again, such as feed herself and get
dressed, and slowly gained back her independence. Winche, who now lives in Mission, even learned to walk again and was able to walk down the aisle two years after the accident to marry Ray. Today, Winche doesn’t focus on the long, hard road she has travelled. She appreciates the present and looks forward to enjoying her life in the future, especially with her three-month-old
daughter, Serenity. There is a lot more Winche would have liked to have shared, but the latest Chicken Soup for the Soul series has a 2,000word limit on each story. While she was “completely excited” her tale caught the attention of the book’s editors, Winche has not ruled out writing one of her own. Mission’s newly surfaced quarter-mile race track will be put to the test next weekend as Mission Raceway Park hosts the Canadian National Open and the Smoke, Fire and Thunder show. More than 250 cars will break-in the new surface from Aug. 22-23. Mission already had a reputation for being one of the fastest tracks in the northwest, but cars can go even faster now. The track was prepped and the new concrete was put to the test for the first time earlier this month at the Langley Loafers Old Time Drags. Vehicles were going as fast as 200 mph and the improvements were noticeable, said MRP race director Wally Duperon. Drivers described the run “as smooth as being on glass.” “It will be interesting to see how many records get broken,” said Duperon. Running two big events in one weekend will be busy, but there are designated times for races for classes, and barring any unexpected problems, everything should run smoothly, according to the race
director. Duperon expects about 5,000 spectators will make their way to the track to watch the numerous races, including nitro funny cars, jet cars, wheelstanders, fuel altereds, nostalgia funny cars, pro mods, and NHRA sportsman classes. Duperon is expecting eight nostalgia nitro funny cars for the weekend, including Washington State’s Kris Krabill, who won last week’s race in Boise, Idaho. Local wheelmen to watch for are Chris Stone, who was the division six pro champion last year, and Jim Isherwood, who will be running his super stock machine. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Aug. 22-24) and racing begins at 9 a.m. Eliminations take place Sunday. The Smoke, Fire and Thunder races begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, and at 7 and 9 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets to the two big races are $15 on Friday, and $25 each day Saturday and Sunday. A pass for all three days is $55. Children 12 years and younger are admitted without charge. For more information visit missionraceway. com.

More than 23,000 people attended Fraser Valley’s largest country music festival in Mission last week. “The festival was absolutely fantastic,” said Rockin’ River organizer and performer Kenny Hess. “I’m worn out.” Despite the cancellation of Saturday night’s headline act, Rascal Flatts, everyone had a
great time and most people Hess spoke with at the festival were more excited about seeing Randy Houser who was brought in at the last minute to close out the show. “It was an insane amount of work,” shared Hess, who had just a couple of days to find a replacement performer after Rascal Flatts’ lead singer lost his voice. “I talked to everyone and their
agents.” Hess had seen Houser’s shows before and said he was “almost” the first choice. A private jet was sent to pick up the country singer in Minneapolis to bring him to Mission. And in the end, all the work paid off. “We pulled off magic to save the show,” said Hess, noting there were few issues with the crowd. “Between Houser and Bamford, it
was phenomenal.” Hess also enjoyed the performance by the Road Hammers. “Canada should be so proud of these artists. They are stars – international stars.” People really love what the festival is about, said Hess, adding when he was on stage, it seemed the crowd was more involved with the music than ever. “It was wonderful.” Mission Mounties
confirmed there were few issues to deal with throughout the festival, which ran from Aug 7-9 at Mission Raceway Park. Police arrested two people Thursday night for excessive drunkenness. No other incidents were brought to their attention at the festival. “From our perspective, it went well,” said RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright.

Cooling the competitive fires
Successful people have likely got a certain competitive drive that keeps them moving in the right direction. Compromise does not exist on the field of play, but it certainly does in the real world. The more lives directly affected by certain negotiations, the more important it is to balance the need to win with the need to settle. Take a collective bargaining process, for example. Each side is led by people who are accustomed to seeing things turn out their way. But, again, unlike the world of sports, barring ties, win-win scenarios are not only possible, but desirable.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
An outright desire to win at any cost can bring a mixed blessing along with a triumph, possibly tainting the victory with many years of hard feelings and lost productivity. On the field of play, winning the right way is important. Good sportsmanship and respect for the opponent turns the contest into something truly worthwhile, verging on noble. There are, again, direct parallels to real life, and real business. The long and the short of it is this: compromise from each side – whether we’re talking teachers and government – can grease the skids to get productive work happening again and put a start to the healing process.

Re: “Farm changes a great leap forward,â€? Aug. 8 edition. Agriculture minister Norm Letnick happens to be reducing the harm from Bill 24 (this spring’s ALR bill) with his consultation about the ALR Regulation. However, columnist Tom Fletcher seems confused about its main purpose. The consultation paper begins with: “The purpose of this consultation is to invite your input on some proposed additional activities‌â€? That contrasts with the Bill 24 experience, where thousands of citizens of all stripes requested consultation and were spurned. It remains obvious that the bill reduced the protection of farmland in the nine-tenths of the ALR in the new second tier. It is not obvious why Fletcher thinks that
fact or a distillery on MLA Lana Popham’s farm is relevant to the current consultation. In many ways, Letnick’s collegial process is exemplary. One gets the sense of a group of people with down-to-earth knowledge working toward careful updates to the ALR Regulation. To take part, google “July 2014 Land Commission consultation� without quotes. You’ll find the consultation paper and a survey, open until Aug. 22. He was described as a thunderstorm of comedic genius. He was everything from a quirky alien, a magical genie, a caring cross-dressing father, comedic doctor and an inspiring mentor in the many movie roles he played over the years. Robin Williams passed away this week of suicide after battling depression. Although I cannot possibly measure how much he contributed to popular culture, the last lesson of this amazing talent was to unfortunately join an already long line of celebrities gone too soon, dead by something all too preventable. Perhaps what hits us the most is that while Williams made us smile so much and forget the drudgery of everyday life, we, society, were not there for his needs. Under the rubber-face gigantic smile he displayed was a man desperate for help. Does his death haunt us because we cannot understand how one achieving so much would suffer as such or because it holds up a mirror to society’s face? One that says, “What have you done for me lately?� without ever returning the favour. Did our preoccupation with immediate gratification make us blind to the needs of one man even as he gave 100 per cent to us in front of the camera? Did the stigma of mental illness or difficulties stop us from noticing and caring, or stop him from trying to get help? The greatest lesson Williams gave us was to question why we couldn’t see or stop the pain he felt. It’s just a shame he had to die to try to get us to focus on mental health. I hope that we don’t forget this les-

If the sky is clear and the roads remain dry, this year’s Soapbox Derby races will take place Saturday, Aug. 23. The event was originally set for June, but was rained out. If there is even a sprinkle or chance of rain, the event will be postponed until September. There are more than 40 children and three adults registered to roll down the Stave Lake between Knight Street to 11 Avenue.

“There will be two or three heats,” said derby president Remco Bergman, noting cars can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h on the hill. “It’s a fast track.” But before the children can put their wheels on the pavement, the mayors of Mission and Abbotsford will be going head to head in the first race of the day. Last year Mission Mayor Ted Adlem crossed the finish line ahead of Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton. This year, Adlem has challenged Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman. “I’m going to beat the
pants off of Bruce,” said Adlem confidently. Adlem, who admitted he is heavier than Banman, said his weight will give him an advantage coming down the hill. Banman, who accepted the challenge last week, could not be reached for comment. Only bragging rights are at stake in the friendly competition. The mayors will be racing in adult-sized cars owned by the Mission and District Soapbox Derby Association. Adlem will be in car 99 painted by local youth, and Banman will be in car 47, said Bergman, who agreed Adlem has
a physical advantage. Bergman encourages racers to arrive before 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event to prevent delays. Racing will take place following opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. “I’d love to have everyone out there,” said Bergman, noting there will be other community organizations and vendors present, as well as martial arts demonstrations, pudding eating and hot dog eating contests. The doctors’ opinion was that her chronic pain was permanent and she’d likely have such pain for the rest of her life.

The Parks, Recreation & Culture Department hit the road this summer visiting a new park each Wednesday through July and August. Two Play Leaders come armed with games, activities and crafts for 2 hours of fun and it is absolutely free. The activities are geared to children 6 – 10 years of age. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and enjoy it in the park as part of the fun. This is a great opportunity to get outside, meet your neighbors and enjoy some active fun. Look for the white Parks, Recreation & Culture tent and you will find us. All participants will have their name entered into a prize draw at the park. This is the second year of the challenge and is open to everyone. BC Transit starts investigation following Monday bus crash Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
BC Transit has launched an investigation into a bus crash Monday afternoon. The incident happened around 5 p.m. Monday at Cade Barr Street and Best Avenue. According to police, the bus rolled down the street and was not able to stop. It crashed through a yard and hit a parked car in the driveway of a home on Best Avenue, east of Cade Barr. Nine passengers and the driver were on board bus #33 heading to the Junction Mall at the time. “Two passengers and the operator were taken to hospital as a precaution, but there were no significant injuries,” said RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright.
“Thankfully nobody was injured,” said John Barry, manager of communications for BC Transit. “We’re treating this with a lot of urgency.” BC Transit is working with local authorities, including police and insurance companies, and conducting its own investigation. Three investigators were dispatched from Victoria Tuesday morning to look into what led the crash. “It’s very early in the investigative stage now,” said Barry, who didn’t want to speculate on the cause. “We’ll talk to as many people as we can and get the vehicle looked at.” According to Barry, the bus driver was an experienced one, but he didn’t know exactly how many years she had been operating. “We will be talking to her to get her perspective.”

A 25-year-old Mission man is recovering from serious injuries after he was hit on the head several times during a home invasion last Wednesday morning. According to police, three men wearing hoodies and balaclavas forced their way into a residence on Diamond Avenue around 1 a.m. When the couple inside the house confronted the intruders, the male resident was assaulted and hit with a metal object. He sustained multiple fractures and cuts to his head, and was transported to hospital where he is currently in stable condition. The female resident was not hurt and nothing was taken from the home. Mounties also noted there was no evidence of criminal activity at the home. Police believe the attack was targeted, but will not reveal whether the parties knew each other, said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. Investigators are looking into whether this incident was related to previous attacks in the community. In June, several people were assaulted in four separate incidents which police believe were related. The vague description of the suspects in the earlier events is similar to how witnesses described the attackers in the home invasion last week. All suspects were wearing hoodies and balaclavas. The suspects in the most recent incident fled the scene in a silver car, possibly a Mazda. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Mission RCMP at 604826-7161. Overpass slated for upgrade Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
The Murray Street overpass is getting an upgrade and seismic retrofit. The work is being done by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in consultation with the District of Mission. According to a report to council, the design of the project is being done in two phases by the ministry. The government is now asking for Mission’s input on how it should be constructed. Mission council is choosing to have the work done in three stages, which would take about 11 months,
as opposed two a two-stage process that would take eight months. The three-stage option would keep the overpass open to all traffic and pedestrians during construction. The first phase will target the east side of the bridge and take about four months to complete. The west side of the bridge worked on during the second phase of construction, which is also expected to last four months. During this time, the sidewalk will be closed and pedestrian traffic will be diverted to the West Coast Express Overpass, which is about a

Kayaker Brent aims for podium in China Dan KINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS
When Alex Brent arrived in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia at the end of May for the Canoe Kayak Canada national team trials, he was rather anonymous. Case in point: After the junior men’s K1 1,000-metre race, he overheard two spectators discussing what had transpired. One observer asked what the order of fin-
ishes had been. The other replied with the names of the gold and silver medalists – both well-established paddlers from Eastern Canada. “And some random guy from B.C. got third,” he added. That would be Brent, the 17-year-old Dewdney native who had just won his first junior national kayaking medal. “I was like, ‘Uh, that’s
me,’” he recounted with a chuckle. They surely know his name now – Brent went on to win gold the next day in the junior men’s K2 1000 with partner Eric Fast of Burnaby, winning by a dominant 4.8-second margin. There was so much open water between the Brent/ Fast boat and the second-place crew, they started celebrating 100 metres before the fin-
ish line because they knew they had the race in the bag. Those breakthrough performances paved the way to a memorable summer for Brent, as he was named to the junior national team. In mid-July, he traveled to Szeged, Hungary for the Junior/U23 World Championships, and made the B final in the K2 1000 with Fast, finishing 18th overall.

Alex Brent of Dewdney and partner Eric Fast competed in the K2 1000 event at the junior world championships in Hungary, finishing 18th overall. This week, he hops on a plane for Nanjing, China, where he’s part of the Canadian contingent for the Youth Olympics. “This may sound a tad cliche, but I’m just happy to be paddling for Canada,” enthused Brent, who is going into Grade 12 at Abbotsford’s St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary.
Brent got his start in kayaking 11 years ago when he attended a camp hosted by the Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club on Whonnock Lake. He’s been a member of the club ever since. He attributes his breakthrough summer to a terrific winter of training that preceded it. He spent hours upon
hours lifting weights, and sharpened his technique during a sixweek training camp in Florida. Brent’s goal at the Youth Olympics is to finish in the top 10, but “the dream would be to win a medal.” “That would be phenomenal, to bring it home and show my coach,” he said.

Tree branch falls on moving car happened. The impact shattered the car’s windshield and dented parts of the car. Young said she couldn’t escape through the driver’s side door and had to get out from the passenger side. Witnesses at the scene told police a garbage truck backing into the nearby alley hit the tree, but the large branch didn’t fall right away. Police have not yet confirmed the report. District crews were called to help free the car and remove the branches from the road. Grand Street was closed to traffic in both directions for a couple of hours.
Hurd Street property sold for more than $1M
The provincial government sold about an acre of land on Hurd Street to a developer in 2013 for close to $1.07 million. VanMar Constructors bought the property to build Mission’s new Community Health Centre, and leased the facility back to community partners, such as Fraser Health, physicians and retailers. The 27,000-sq.-ft. facility houses a range of health-related programs, such as a diabetes and seniors’ clinic, public health, and mental health. The facility opened last summer. The property, which was a part of the grounds of Mission Memorial Hospital, was part of the sale of 50-odd properties the government sold in the 2013-14 fiscal year, which netted the provincial treasury about $310 million. The list was released last month.

Rose is survived by her loving husband Chuck of 58 ½ years, children, Cheryl (Glenn), Earl (Audrey), Laurel (Dan), Adele (Jay), grandchildren, Brooklyn, Krista, Cynthia (Nathan), Gregg, Derek, Jared, Liam, Shaymus, Matthew, Vanessa, Jeremy, family and friends. To all she met, she loved, and accepted with open arms, and desired that all would come to know God. We want to thank all the Mission hospital staff for their kind care given to Rose. A Celebration will be held at Bethel Pentecostal on Sunday, August 17th at 3 pm. A private family graveside service will be held.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great grandfather Brian Appleby. Born September 15, 1927 in Mission, son of Randolph and Irene Appleby, passed away in his sleep August 2, 2014 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital in his 86th year. Predeceased by the love of his life Audrie in 2009. He leaves behind three children, Craig (Jackie), Doug (Jo) and Elizabeth, 4 grandchildren; Curtis (Danyel), Chris (Jenny), Victoria and James, 5 great grandchildren; Seth, Rome, Aria, Madi and David, his loving sister Diana, numerous relatives and friends. Brian was raised and lived most of his life in Dewdney. Upon completing university he spent 5 years with the experimental farm services in Prince George then returned back to farm in Dewdney, at that time completed courses to become a secondary school teacher. Brian taught in Mission and Abbotsford for a total of 28 years. Primarily counseling in Mission in his latter years. He spent 15 years as a Fraser Valley Regional Director, 13 years as a hospital board member and also Life Time Learning member. Brian enjoyed curling and travelling. He spent his last five years at Cedar’s assisted living in Mission, where he enjoyed wonderful company and would often be seen enjoying the piano, playing cards or bringing his sense of humour to the table where he enjoyed coffee with friends. Special thank you to the staff at the Cedar’s for all your kindness and care over the last 5 years, Dr. Kornelsen, his staff, the MMH laboratory and to the emergency ward at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. We would love all who knew Brian to come and join the family in a celebration of his life. Bring your stories! Ed Heijster passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 62. Predeceased by his father Hank, he is survived by his wife, Lory and four children, Stephen (Julie) Heijster, Gary (Theresa) Heijster, Kristina (Jordan) Mohle, Kelsey (Justin) McCurdy, his mother, Cornelia Heijster and two sisters, Louise (John) Veenhof and Regina Kinnear. Ed was born in the Netherlands in 1951 and immigrated with his family to Richmond where he grew up. With his wife and children he has lived in Surrey, Delta, Salmon Arm and Abbotsford. He volunteered with Scouts Canada as a leader and as president of the Salmon Arm Lacrosse Association. He loved camping, old cars and working around the house. Ed was a loving husband and wonderful father. His loss will be felt by all who knew him. A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Road in Abbotsford on August 22nd at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the BC Transplant Research Foundation. Our heartfelt thanks to the Emergency and Cardiac Care staff at Abbotsford Hospital and to Dr. Kanji, Tina, Debbie and all the staff in ICU at Royal Columbian Hospital for their compassionate care.
Lindsay was released from his courageous battle with cancer on August 9th. He leaves behind his wife Gill, children; Andrew, Sue, Anita, Joanne, Jenn and Tim, 15 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and his sister Wendy Smith. Our hearts are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support over the past 6 months. We appreciated the sensitive care from the neurosurgeon Dr. Frangou and nursing staff at the Royal Columbian Hospital, and the dedicated Palliative Care Team who enabled Lindsay to stay at home, the Tertiary Staff at the MSA Hospital and intensive compassionate service at Mission Hospice. The pharmacists at Shoppers Drug Mart at SevenOaks must be mentioned for their personal support throughout his illness. All the acts of kindness, gifts and cards from Lindsay’s treasured friends helped him through til the end. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 18th at 1:00 pm at Grace Church 2087 McMillan Rd, followed by a reception in the church hall.

Mike took his final fishing trip on July 7, 2014 on Kinbasket Lake at the Mica Dam. Mike was born in Windsor, ON March 9, 1959. After graduating high school Mike moved to the Columbia Valley, BC in 1979. Mike met his wife in 1981 and they were married in 1983 in Invermere, BC. The family moved to Vancouver in 1985, where Mike finished his apprenticeship and became a journeyman Electrician. Over the past 28 years Mike has worked on many projects and had risen from journeyman to superintendent on his last project, Mica Dam. On his down time Mike enjoyed golfing, fishing and working on many projects at the family home. Mike enjoyed travelling to Thailand, which he called his second home. What Mike enjoyed most was his time at home with his family. He is sadly missed and survived by his wife of 31 years Val, and daughter Isabelle (Cody), his sons Leroy (Cecili), Richard and Curtis, his pride and joy were his grandson Odyn and granddaughter Miya. He is also survived by his parents Ed and Maxine Murphy of Windsor, ON, his brother Larry (Nancy) and sisters Liz (Dan) and Pam, as well as many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Mike’s life will take place on Sunday, August 17th, at the Silverdale Community Hall, located at 8760 McLean Ave., Mission, BC from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to the Ralstons and Associates or Revelstoke Search and Rescue in Mike’s name. “May you always have your ass in the water, toes in the sand and a cold Leo beer in your hand.”
