he RCMP has taken technology to new heights when it comes to investigating collisions on B.C. Interior roads.

Using a small, remotecontrolled drone equipped with a digital camera, investigators can now take high-definition photos of crash scenes from the air and identify important reference points.

That information is then fed into a computer and animated recreations of what happened result.

Capital News assistant editor Alistair Waters talked to the police about how the use of the drone is not only saving time and giving more detailed information, it is also allowing the police to re-open roads faster after a serious crash.

Drone digital camera new police tool for analyzing accident scenes Alistair Waters ASSISTANT EDITOR

W

hen it comes to investigating automobile crashes, the sky’s the limit for the Kelowna RCMP. The police here now use a small remote-controlled flying drone, equipped with a digital camera, that not only provides investigators with a high-definition bird’s eye view of the crash scene, it also cuts the time it takes to collect visual evidence allowing the police to open roads more quickly after an accident.

Where it used to take a few hours to take photos from ground level, the aerial digital photographs can now be taken from several different angles overhead in a matter of minutes. And the pictures encompass the entire scene.

The information collected on those photographs can be analyzed by special computer software capable of ultimately recreating an animated sequence showing just what happened—all from a myriad of identified points on each picture.

“It’s one more tool we have at our disposal,” says Sgt. Brian Nightingale, head of Integrated Collision Analysis Reconstruction Services (ICARS) with the RCMP’s SouthEast District.

Nightingale, along with two other pilots, one based in Vernon and one based in Penticton, fly the drone, known as an unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV. There are several other officers in the regional ICARS unit as well.

And according to Nightingale, they are kept busy, especially during the summer months in the

With more traffic on the roads, especially in the more populated parts of the region, there are more

serious crashes at this time of year that need to be investigated, he says.

The information Nightingale’s team col-

lects is often used in court to explain just what happened. But unlike the past, when officers from ICARS would have to explain in words and by using charts how a crash occurred, now they can point to an animated video, showing not only what happened but other critical information such as speed, braking, skid marks and different view-

ing angles of the crash.

“Judges love this because they can see it for themselves or give it to a jury to look at,” says Nightingale.

The UAV that the police use is made in Saskatchewan and costs about $20,000. It’s small—about two feet long—and made of carbon fibre so its light.

It has four propel-

lers as well as an underside gimble that holds the camera steady during flight.

Cpl. Justin Maetche is the Vernon pilot. Given Vernon’s central location in the sprawling southeast division—which covers an area from Blue River in the north to the Canada-U.S. border in the south—Maetche has the UAV stationed with him regularly.

Maetche, who unlike Nightingale, grew up playing video games, found his aptitude perfect for flying the UAV. In fact, as part of the collision reconstruction team, RCMP officers who have a physics or technical backgrounds are sought out and asked to join.

“We work behind the scenes but it is very technical,” says Nightingale.

In addition to crash reconstruction information gathering and analysis, the UAV is also used to assist the regional emergency response team.

In one case, it was used to provide information to the ERT on scene where officers were preparing to enter a residence.

It was not only used to look through a window to identify where people were located inside a house, but it also became the eyes on the front of the house for the ERT while its members entered through the rear.

But the vast majority of work the UAV does involves taking pictures of crash scenes.

Nightingale is quick to point out that the device is not used by the police for surveillance.

Cemetery brought back to life Wade Paterson STAFF REPORTER

Two years ago, the Westbank Cemetery was described as devastating, depressing and neglected.

Now, flowers and trees line the walkways. Fresh cut grass makes the area seem more like a park than a gravel pit.

And the upgrades haven’t come at a cost to West Kelowna taxpayers.

“This is a beautiful place now,” said District of West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater.

“As the trees and the vegetation matures, it’s going to be really parklike.”

Improving the West-

bank Cemetery has been a goal of district chief administrative officer Jim Zaffino’s for quite some time.

But it was a speech to council by Ingrid Laube, daughter of the late Leonard Crosby, that really kick-started the cemetery’s improvements.

Laube told councillors she was devastated the first time she visited the Westbank Cemetery to pay her respects.

Laube’s thoughts, combined with one of the district’s busiest public consultation sessions, confirmed the community’s desire to clean up the cemetery.

Zaffino was previous-

ly in charge of the Penticton cemetery and saw an opportunity to beautify the Westbank Cemetery without charging taxpayers.

“There had to be an infusion of money,” said Zaffino.

The district constructed columbariums and mausoleums—structures that hold urns and tombs—and began selling spaces in each of those structures.

“Usually we’re averaging $25,000 per year.

We’ve already exceeded that by three times (this year),” said Zaffino, who added the rates for existing plots were not increased.

The additional revenue has allowed the district to improve the cemetery’s landscape by adding more than 3,500 shrubs and trees.

According to Stacey Harding, parks and public works supervisor, at the current rate of sales, the cemetery’s vacant full casket burial sites will be occupied by spring 2016.

The district’s next step will be looking to improve an adjacent 8.2-acre piece of property known as Pine Grove, which should provide enough space for the next 20 to 25 years. wpaterson @kelownacapnews.com Twitter: @PatersonWade

Police deem fire as suspicious West Kelowna RCMP are seeking possible witnesses after a suspicious fire was extinguished late Wednesday night.

Police and the West Kelowna fire department responded to a report of a fire at 10:23 p.m., started next to a front entrance of a property located in the 3500 block of Elk Road.

The small fire was extinguished

quickly before emergency crews arrived on scene.

A witness reported seeing two young males walking in the area prior to the fire being ignited.

Police would like to speak with the males who may have been witnesses to this incident.

Police are considering this fire as suspicious in nature and continue to investigate.

Drone camera limitations prevent its use for police surveillance Camera from A3 can only be operated within the line of sight of the pilot, and does not have a specialized camera for low light situations. It’s 18-megapixel digital camera takes regular photographs at a maximum height of 150 metres, substantially lower than a helicopter could fly.

And because it is small, it can get into areas large aircraft cannot.

With its wide-angle 16-millimetre lens, the camera captures an entire crash scene in one photo. Prior to its introduction, Nightingale said officers would have had to take a series of photos from the ground using set

points of reference on a marker held by another officer. That process could take a few hours. Now it takes just 10 minutes for the UAV to do its work.

Unlike hobbyists who fly remote-controlled aircraft and cheaper, amateur versions of camera-equipped drones, commercial operators—of which the RCMP is included—have to abide by set rules laid down under the federal Transportation Act. Those rules include mandatory line-of-sight operation, the pilot must be assisted by another officer who watches the ground while the drone is in flight, contacting air traffic control if the UAV is to be used within sev-

en kilometres of an airport and not allowing anyone to stand directly under the unit when it is in the air.

A recent case in Vancouver created a call for the extension of those rules for hobbyists after a drone was flown close to Vancouver International Airport without the pilot notifying the airport. The use of drones to help police do their job was also in the headlines last year when a Saskatchewan RCMP officer, called in to fly a drone over the scene of a car crash in a remote area, was able to locate the driver who stumbled away from the scene in a daze and was found more than a kilometre away with the aid of

a thermal imaging device that was attached to the drone’s camera.

While the local UAV does not have thermal imaging capabilities yet, Maetche said police here would like to have it and the business case is being made to get it. While the UAV has made the task of gathering information at crash scenes easier and more complete, it is the computer software that translates the points on the photographs into a full picture of what happened that is the real star.

And that is also evolving.

Using what is known as a “point cloud,” the software creates a virtual reconstruction of the events that

led up to and included the crash from the points identified on the picture

by ICARS officers. Aided by other sources of information such as the computerized “black box” that all modern vehicles now have, the police can ascertain how fast a vehicle was traveling, when its brakes were applied and the exact moment the airbags were deployed. All of that information goes into reconstructing the incident.

But it all starts with the collection of visual images high above the scene.

And that is where drones are helping change the job of collision reconstruction unit officers.

Civic election nomination package ready

If you are thinking of running for mayor or council in Kelowna in November’s civic election, now’s the time to pick up an information and nomination package from City Hall.

“Anyone interested in running for mayor, councillor or school trustee is invited to come in and pick up an information .package,” said chief election officer Karen Needham.

“The election office is now up and running out of the Office of the City Clerk and we’re here to answer any questions potential candidates or voters might have.”

While the actual nomination period does not start until the end of September and runs until Oct. 10, as of today, nomination packages are available to anyone considering running for mayor, councillor or Kelowna trustee on the Cen-

tral Okanagan School District board of education. The packages are available from the city clerk’s office at Kelowna City Hall.

Last election, five candidates ran for mayor and another 40 ran for the eight councillor positions.

Another 14 candidates ran for the four Kelowna

board of education trustee seats.

There are three major changes for candidates to consider heading into this November’s civic election.

The first is the length of the term. The province changed it to four years from the current three starting with the upcom-

Nutritional Testing Nutrition is an essential part of good health.

The famous medical researcher Dr. Bruce Lipton has lectured that less than 5% of diseases are due to genetic causes. Structural tests are used to determine if and how you are broken. While very useful and important, structural medical tests are limited.

Functional medical tests are used to determine the chemical balances underlying your risks of developing disease, and your potential for having good health. Functional tests help you to identify health problems before you “break”.

Medical tests fall into two categories, structural and functional. Common examples of structural medical tests include: X-rays to assess a broken bone; ultra sound studies

My favorite panel of functional laboratory tests is the Biological Terrain Assessment (BTA) panel. I have used the BTA test panel since 1996 to identify health patterns. The BTA panel

measures chemical values in the urine and saliva, as well as a number of physical functions such as blood pressure. Health patterns are determined from analyzing a total of forty one individual measurements.

Urine is filtered blood and measurements of it reflect what is happening inside of our cells. Saliva is derived from our lymph, the fluid that surrounds our cells, and is an important indicator of the health in our digestive, immune and detoxification systems.

The BTA panel measures key nutritional

markers, including: mineral levels, which indicate how well you move the energy in your body; your energy production efficiency; how flexible you are at the cellular level; your ability to adapt to stress; your detoxification, digestive, and immune function efficiency; and how well you use your proteins.

Good nutrition often requires more than just good food. It often requires nutritional supplements. The best way to know what nutritional supplements to take is to measure your nutritional levels. To do this I recommend the BTA panel of laboratory tests.

Headaches for SD 23 if teachers’ contract not settled The Central Okanagan School District is already bracing for a delay in the Tuesday, Sept. 3, resumption of classes if the teachers and province still haven’t reached a settlement on a new contract.

But aside from local students, the school district has another headache to deal with as close to 300 students are set to arrive from various countries around the world, having paid to spend a

year of their schooling here.

Moyra Baxter, chair of the Central Okanagan Board of Education, says the International Homestay program injects about $1 million annually into

the local school district budget.

Baxter says the program staff have contacted all of the students to give them a heads up about the labour situation regarding the teachers.

“We just can’t ignore the fact this situation is happening,” said Baxter, who added it appears the potential disruption of classes at the start of the school year isn’t dissuading students from still coming here.

Baxter said the potential challenge now is to have a plan in place if schools are behind picket lines. “It causes problems in that besides classrooms being closed, school buses won’t be running as well which raises transportation issues,” she said.

At an orientation meeting on Wednesday, homestay parents were told orientation activities will be planned for the first week, with homestay parents having to get students to a pre-determined central location, from where international students will be shuttled by private transportation to other venues.

For the second week, the students will be taken on a four or five day trip,

which normally is scheduled for later in the school year.

If the dispute continues through a third week, other daily activities within Kelowna will be provided. Beyond that, no firm plans are yet in place should a strike drag on that long.

Baxter said what happens come September is a bit of an unknown for all school districts across the province, as the negotiations between the BC Teachers’ Federation and province have no involvement from local school administrative staff or school trustees.

“My hope is that the two sides will continue to bargain in good faith. I would like to see both sides bargain behind closed doors rather than going back and forth with public comments in the media,” Baxter said.

She said public posturing by both sides in this dispute leads to confusion among parents about what the issues are and frustration that an agreement isn’t yet in place.

While strikes by teachers that have closed down schools in the past have not been long in duration, she noted the prov-

incial government is not set to begin a fall sitting of the legislation until October.

She said unless that schedule is changed, it would rule out any immediate possibility of back to work legislation being imposed by the provincial government before a month into the school year.

She noted the school board has already sent a letter to Victoria stating its opposition to the $40/per child allowance credit for parents if schools don’t re-open Sept. 2, and that any savings to government created by teachers staying off the job be earmarked for education program spending only.

Along with the homestay program, another stress point a potential school shutdown in the fall presents involves a student leadership conference set to take place at the end of September.

The annual Canadian Student Leadership Conference, which has been in the planning for three years since Kelowna won the bid to host this year’s event, will bring some 1,000 students and teaching counsellors from across Canada, to be at

Kelowna Senior Secondary School.

“If KSS is closed by the strike, we have looked at what other spaces there are in Kelowna to host the conference and there is nowhere that can accommodate this type of conference,” Baxter said.

The plan was that the school would be closed to classes during the conference, with the missed days being made up at other times during the school year.

KSS would host the visiting students each day for the various workshops and guest speaker presentations.

“It’s a major undertaking. The visiting students all have to be billeted out, we have to feed the participants each day at the school, organize the workshops and bring in keynote speakers from across Canada,” Baxter said.

“A lot of effort, hundreds of hours, have gone into planning this, so we’re hoping both sides in the teacher contract negotiations will listen to each other, and both sides will make some comprises to reach an agreement.”

ome of us are born to act, others born to watch, and perhaps, as Shakespeare once suggested, “All the world is a stage.”

Regardless, sometimes an individual of seeming brilliance enters our world and has a profound impact on millions.

Robin Williams was all of that. Ironically, of all the masterful performances he gave in his career as an actor (and as himself offstage), his exit scene may serve a greater impact than any.

His departure gives the world another ‘wakeup’ to the mental illness of depression.

I was not surprised by his suicide this week.

Shocked and deeply saddened, but not surprised.

It’s no secret those who battle depression often do it through humour or other dynamic ways such as music or sports to overcome it.

Whatever it takes to make the hurt go away, the voice to shut-up, the emptiness to fill. Whatever it takes to fit in, feel accepted, to matter.

Sadly, another option that seems to go hand in hand with depression is addiction. Alcohol, drugs, prescription pills help fill the void, briefly. That’s when the spiral gets really messy.

Humour, however, helps hide the sorrow best for many. It has for me.

As a scared little kid in elementary school with a big forehead and small stature, I soon learned that laughter could be the great equalizer.

I trundled terrified into the role of class clown. I quickly learned that humour got me out of my penalty box of self-persecution and insecurity.

It made me feel like I fit in somewhere. After a while, the act becomes the person. For some that works out fine and for others, perhaps like Williams, it does not.

Charlie Hodge One never knows when that horrible ugly monster will just show up.

I struggle with depression every day and so far in my life I have been very fortunate. I try and remind myself that it is simply something I must overcome with positive energy and the hope that at any moment it will pass.

In my counter-balance struggle with depression, I have become the eternal optimist. That’s what I figure is a win-win. I’m lucky but many are not.

I am luckier than Williams today, once again proving that having everything is no guarantee of happiness.

The third domino that often falls in the depression game, after addictions, is suicide. Many are in disbelief that Williams would take his own life. I am not sure why.

In many interviews, Williams joked his way through conversations about his alcohol and drug use. Humour, like writing, is often best if based on what you know.

It is often suggested that suicide is a selfish and gutless act. Selfish perhaps but suicide is not a gutless act. Believe me.

I know. I tried it. But I did not have the guts.

A lack of intestinal fortitude, or simply a desire to continue on despite the darkness? I am not sure why I never went through with the task— and clearly happy I did not. Perhaps the pain was simply not that bad.

Thankfully I had not tossed in copious quantities of alcohol into the mix that night.

Everything has a tipping point. I jokingly said to a friend recently, “Suicide is not ‘gutless,’ it takes a lot of guts. It’s not an easy thing to do. If you

don’t believe me, try it.”

That’s the sort of dark humour Robin Williams would have used.

Like millions around the world, I will long marvel at the film magic and creative brilliance Williams gave us. He was my favourite actor as his sensitivity and passion will never be replaced. He gave so many so much and we are a much happier place because of him.

As his encore we have a better understanding or awareness of his quiet disease.

Bobby Goldsboro is another creative sort who has battled depression in his own ways. In 1964, his breakthrough song See the Funny Little Clown, hit number 9 on

the charts and his career was launched.

His song popped in my mind the minute I heard the news about Williams. Goldsboro wrote about depression and added the girlfriend broken heart angle to fit the market. Here is the rest of the tune: See the funny little clown He’s hiding behind a smile

I even broke the news West Kelowna was considering banning ice cream trucks from playing their nostalgic tinny music while driving through the district.

But what impacted me most over the past three years was the day-to-day interactions with those in our talented newsroom.

“There’s a lot of pride here,” my editor, Barry Gerding, told me the day I interviewed to be a reporter at Capital News.

“We try to offer some depth. I think people appreciate that.”

F M The days I merely went through the r motions, pumping out a 250-word storyh with only one source, wouldn’t go unnoticed. My cubicle neighbours would push me to do better. They’d help out by e-mailing me the link to a previous story they’d written on the subject, or ▼ send me the phone number of someone I should talk to.

During my three years, there were times friends my age asked why I continued to work for a newspaper when so many other 20-something journalists were working online.

My answer always referenced the t d pride, ethics and intelligence of the Capital News editorial department.

Though I’m stepping away from w reporting, I’ll continue to turn to this B newspaper and its website, kelownaca- w pnews.com, for coverage that goes be- c m yond low-hanging fruit.

Enviro’s ‘folded their tent and went home’ To the editor: Re: Charlie Hodge’s column of Aug. 8, 2014, Passion for Fighting Old Causes Rekindled by Mine Spill.

In Charlie’s column of Aug. 8, he ponders how “now that the cows are out of the barn, the fingers are waving on who left the door open.”

The answer to that question is quite simple and may be shocking for many people.

The answer is Charlie Hodge, in part, and the environmental movement as a whole.

The answer is because the environmental movement failed to engage in a debate over the meaning of the phrase “sustainable development.”

Essentially, led by the Sierra Club, at the height

of its power and influence, the Sierra Club endorsed the report of the Bruntland Commission and its definition of sustainable development. The Sierra Club essentially folded its tent and went home.

The rest of the environmental community did the same thing.

By refusing to engage in a debate and establishing its own meaning of the phrase in the public domain, the environmental movement meekly accepted the definition of the Bruntland Commission.

That definition, of course, is meaningless because it means everything to everyone and is contradictory. That the definition is meaningless should be intuitive as should the recognition that other stated

contradictions renders the whole report meaningless.

Since the surrender, politicians and bureaucrats of all political stripes have been using the phrase whoever they can.

Now we have sustainable mining, forestry, buildings, cities, health care, budgets, etc.

No one stops to think that any human activity that depends on fossil fuels is to sustainable.

No one asks what makes mining or forestry sustainable, let along with makes buildings, health care or budgets sustainable.

While forests are renewable, the industry itself is not sustainable. The whole purpose of mining is to deplete ore bodies, Buildings, health care and budgets are not so much sustainable as they

are maintainable by continued activity.

The only sustainable transportation is barefoot walking while all other modes require a modicum of human ingenuity and technology, none of which are sustainable.

Humans and all biological organisms are sustainable because we procreate and obtain nourishment. Buildings do not build themselves, nor can they repair a broken window.

Cities are kept functioning by the umbilical cords that stretch into the surrounding environment to supply the humans living within their nourishment, water and energy.

Sever the umbilical cords and the cities die, and conversely, if the humans leave the cities die.

And we are forever cutting budgets so they seem neither maintainable nor sustainable.

The environmentalists lost when they refused to engage in a debate over the meaning of sustainable development. By refusing to engage in verbal combat, they surrendered the field to the politicians and spin doctors whom they so despise.

Having surrendered the field, they are left to revisit issues and watch others like global warming spin out of control.

Unless you engage in the debate, you surrender the field and the environmental movement has surrendered the field.

US citizens coming to proselytize in Okanagan To the editor: It seems that running into a member of the Church of Latter-Day saints is becoming common occurrence here in Kelowna.

In the last month alone I have encountered six members from the Mormon religion who are here to proselytize from the USA. All six are were young Americans boys and girls between 18 and 22 years old who proudly

wore name tags labelled sister or elder, and spend their days ‘inviting’ anyone who will listen to share in the word.

It’s bad enough when local religious groups make their neighbourhood stops to promote their ideas just as I’m about to sit down for a nice lunch, but when these naive kids arrive from another country, to spread their ideas here, it makes me angry.

If its OK to come to Canada on a tourist/volunteer visa with the intention to proselytize, then imagine how we may react if religious groups funded from Islamic nations came to Canada with the same intention. Would we be so accommodating?

The Internet and TV news is screaming out to us about what is wrong with the intentional dissemination of religious

fundamentalism.

Why can’t we be more definitive when we speak to these young impressionable minds and let them know that their ideas are not welcome. That exporting unfounded ideologies to other nations and peoples is wrong.

You need only watch a recent documentary titled ‘God Loves Uganda’ to see how the export of American religious fundamentalism causes more

harm than good.

The next time that we meet these young ambassadors from beyond our borders, we should not simply wave them away; but should engage them, and demand that they show evidence for the wild claims in their sacred book, or leave our country immediately.

A muddle of student politics and a $10,000 deficit has The Phoenix Newspaper operating out of the managing editor’s apartment for the next couple of months.

Spacial constraints on campus have forced some difficult decisions of late

and the newspaper, which is in the hole by an eighth of its total budget, has been booted from the student union-run space— for now.

“I find creative solutions to things all the time, so I said give me two or three months and come back to me with a clear plan, and the ability to operate it efficient-

ly, and I’ll try to find some space,” said Rocky Kim, UBCO Student Union president.

The debacle started when the newspaper, which operates as a limb of the student union and does not control its own finances, began running a deficit.

The editor-in-chief, who handles the editor-

ial content of the paper, but none of the financial responsibilities, did the research to suss out how much money most newspapers pay to rent space on campus.

By and large, it was none, whereas The Phoenix pays out $8,000, 10 per cent of its $80,000 budget.

formation to the student union, the managing editor and editor-in-chief were negotiating a deal to forgo payment in exchange for providing free, unbiased moderation services for student political events and advertising in the paper worth roughly $18,000 annually.

Pirate Pak bounty hits $78,786

This year’s Pirate Pak Day staged by White Spot raised $78,786 for charity.

In record numbers, the young and young-at-heart “sailed in” to their local White Spot restaurants Wednesday to enjoy the one day a year when the iconic boats are available for adults.

The effort is all to support the annual fundraiser, helping send over 50 kids and young adults with life-threatening illnesses and chronic disabilities to Zajac Ranch for Children in Mission, B.C. ENTERTAINMENT LGTBQ community proud to call Kelowna home “I’m more concerned about what’s going on globally than anything locally,” says Wilbur Turner, Okanagan Pride Society president.

Wilbur Turner believes the shift came when gay marriage was legalized in Canada a decade ago.

Then again, he’s quite grateful to Kelowna Mayor Walter Gray for the change of heart he’s shown toward the LGTBQ community, particularly for the statement he made this year in his State of the City speech, addressing the treatment of those who identify as LGTBQ in Russia where President Vladimir Putin continues to deny them basic human rights.

“He’s had a change of heart, you know, and I think it’s sincere,” said Turner, president of the Okanagan Pride Society.

He believes Gray is a kind-hearted man.

Last year at the conclusion of the week-long event, Turner received an email from an individual saying for the first time, he felt proud to be a gay man in Kelowna.

Unlike many cities, Pride is still not a huge todo here.

Some 2,000 people will attend events throughout the week, with the big ticket item being the drag queen competition, rather than a parade.

The goal for the local organization is to make as much of the festivities free as possible, so rather than a parade, there is a march along the downtown waterfront.

Were it a parade, the society would need to charge those who went in the procession a fee to cover the cost of closing streets and providing the necessary infrastructure.

“My vision has really been to connect with the community at large,” said edian Billy Mitchell.

Turner, noting they’ve just started a bursary for high school students.

Turner arrived in Kelowna in 2011 and quickly assumed the reins of the Pride Festival, though he really had no prior experience throwing events.

He likes the smalltown feel of the area, however, both within the LGTBQ community and the community at large and is clearly committed to making the most of it.

Where his former abodes—Vancouver and Calgary—have large, well-structured LGTBQ scenes, he’s happy to be part of a group where there aren’t gay bars or even a centre where people can congregate.

It forces people to work together.

“We actually have a waiting list of people wanting to volunteer,” he said.

“We’re still getting people asking if they can volunteer for the Pride Festival and we can’t accommodate any more.”

The theme this year is “local pride, local love,” “It speaks to celebrating what we can enjoy here, but being mindful of the people who don’t have that in other countries,” he said.

The final pride events run this weekend with a march along Kelowna’s waterfront from 11:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, beginning at Stuart Park, and a festival in City Park, at the Jubilee Bowl from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Friday evening drag competition sold out. They released more tickets, twice, but all were snapped up.

This unique music production will in part help support organizations such as the SPCA and The Humane Society to bring awareness and assist in raising funds to help abandoned, abused, neglected and unwanted animals find new homes.

ENTERTAINMENT Events from A13 show makes a return to the TKS Black Box Theatre fall lineup after an absence of nearly 10 years.

Based loosely on the successful Canadian TV series that ran from 1967 to 1977, it will be an evening of non-stop music and fun.

The setting is a traditional English pub and many of the songs will have a British flavour. There will be many opportunities for the audience to sing along and join the fun with a live band.

The show is written and directed by Jeff Samin. Featured in the cast

The 2014 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering will take place on Sunday at the Viscount Aero Centre, at 9800 McDonald Park Road, in Sidney. Crazy pain, head winds, tail winds, currents and waves Kevin Parnell STAFF REPORTER

A group of Kelowna paddlers placed third at the Canadian Women’s National Outrigger Paddling Championships last weekend in Gibsons, B.C., fighting back after a tough start to the 23-kilometre race to stand on the podium.

The six paddlers, members of the Kelowna Paddle Centre, were racing together for the first time and, despite falling behind at the start of the race on the Sunshine Coast, came back to pass several boats en route to the third-place showing.

“It was fantastic,” said Leanne Stanley, who also competed and won the individual women’s championship. “It was a lot of fun and I was really proud to see my teammates step up. It was a gruelling race.

After falling behind at the start of the race, the

crew put their heads down and paddled hard, coming back to close the gap on the two lead boats, finishing within a few seconds of second place and 30 seconds out of first.

It was the first event for the crew consisting of Stanley, Kathy Montgomery, Sandra Mowat, Kerry Willis, Melanie Durban and Christine Castrucow.

Despite being the crew’s first race together, Stanley said the team meshed well.

“The combination clicked, the personalities clicked,” she said.

“Everyone was willing to put their body in crazy-uncomfortable pain. We had head winds, tail winds, currents from the ocean, waves to battle. There was so much excitement and so much pride. We are starting to make a name for ourselves in outrigger paddling.”

Stanley said if the race

was just a few more kilometres long, the Kelowna crew would have caught and passed the eventual winners, a crew out of San Francisco.

Stanley herself is already well-known in the relatively new sport of outrigger paddling.

The women are all members of the Kelowna Paddle Centre, a relatively new club that is establishing itself on the Kelowna waterfront. Membership in the club has quadrupled in the past year with the emergence of paddling sports like outrigger and stand-up paddle boarding.

Outrigger canoes are traditional Hawaiian boats that are built to withstand heavy ocean waves and feature a pontoon out the side.

Kelowna’s Apple Bowl will play host to an elite level rugby match on Saturday evening when the B.C. Bears (0-1) senior men’s provincial team scrums down against the Prairie Wolf Pack (1-0) in round two of the Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC).

The CRC is Canada’s 5elite level domestic rugby competition, used as a primary selection tool for the annual Americas Rugby Championship (ARC), hosted near Victoria.

The ARC is a pivotal step in the development pathway for provincial representatives looking to play for Canada. The Canada-A roster is selected for the Americas tournament where players will

compete against national sides from Argentina, the USA and Uruguay.

The Okanagan region last hosted a CRC fixture in 2011, when the Bears edged the Wolf Pack in a 31-29 thriller at Kelowna’s Apple Bowl.

The Bears most recently faced the Prairie side in the Aug. 9 season opener, where they fell 31-10 to the Wolf Pack in Calgary.

“The players are very much looking forward to this weekend’s fixture in Kelowna,” said B.C. Rugby CEO and Bears director of rugby Jim Dixon. “Not only is it great to be playing in the Okanagan region, but the players are also desperate to make amends for

last week’s below-par performance. The Wolf Pack are a tight-knit group and we must start well and create pressure to ensure the game is competitive

and we get the result we want.”

The B.C. Bears will practice at the Apple Bowl on Friday, Aug. 15 at 5 p.m.

••• Okanagan Sun offensive lineman Michele Vecchio has been named one of the BCFC Players of the Week after a convincing win by the Sun in the team’s home opener last weekend.

The Sun had a great day moving the ball on the ground, running for 257 yards in a 38-0 trouncing of the Vancouver Island Raiders, with the team’s offensive line controlling the line of scrimmage.

••• Kelowna’s Bob LaRue cleaned up at the 2014 British Columbia Skeet Shooting Championships held on Vancouver Island last weekend, winning six of seven provincial titles and finishing as the runner-up in his other division.

It’s the fourth year in a row LaRue has claimed a provincial skeet shooting championship and his results have been submitted to the National Skeet Shooting Association for the zone 8 (every country outside of the United

States) championships, where last year he was a runner-up in the international event.

“I set my goals high this year knowing if I worked hard on every little element of my technique, the big wins were attainable,” said LaRue. “So far the 10,000 to 20,000 rounds of practice has paid off.”

LaRue’s results have him not only as a member of the 2014 Team B.C. skeet shooting squad but he was also named the captain of the team with the highest number of targets hit.

It’s been a stellar year for the local sharp-shooter. Among the events he has won at were the Washington State Championships in July.

LaRue’s results raised his average this year to .9960, equivalent to one miss in every 300 shots, an improvement on his average last year.

“I am still improving and have definitely had a good year so far winning at least a few events at every registered tournament I’ve attended,” said LaRue.

Convenience service for new businesses The City of Kelowna has partnered with Service BC within the B.C. Ministry of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services to make the process of setting up a new business easier than ever.

Under the ministry, BC Registry Services offers the OneStop Business Registry service for entre-

preneurs registering a new business.

This month, OneStop began offering new business owners the convenience of also completing a City of Kelowna Business Licence at the same time.

“This online service further streamlines the process for Kelowna’s business commun-

ity, eliminating the need to visit multiple locations to complete the steps necessary to establish a new business,” said Kelowna Mayor Walter Gray.

There were some tense moments Monday near the Vernon Army Camp as Vernon RCMP officers helped their Lake Country counterparts deal with reports of impaired individuals in a vehicle with a handgun.

The incident began after Vernon RCMP received a heads-up from its dispatch centre at about 7:30 p.m. to be on the lookout for a blue Ford Taurus leaving Lake Country, near Woody’s Pub, with a male passenger associated to the vehicle reportedly seen with a handgun in the car, and the occupants were believed to be impaired.

“One of our traffic officers located the vehicle on Highway 97 near Birnie Road, entering Vernon northbound well in excess of the posted 90 km/hour speed limit, obtaining a speed reading on radar of 142 km/ hour for the vehicle,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

The traffic officer, assisted by several additional members, conducted a high-risk traffic stop with the vehicle on 15th Avenue at 32nd Street, the entrance to the Vernon Army Camp.

Officers had their guns drawn as three occupants were removed from vehicle by verbal commands, then they were all told to take a prone position on the ground.

“They were handcuffed while officers continued the investigation,” said Molendyk.

The driver, a 46-year-old Lake Country man, was determined to be vehicle owner. He was arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and was also determined to be under the influence after failing a roadside screening test. A pellet pistol was recovered from the car and seized.

The driver was issued 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP), which carries a 30-day vehicle impound. He also received a seven-day vehicle impound for the excessive speed violation, a defective window on the vehicle and the car was ordered to be inspected.

SHARON SALEL (NEE MCPHEE) It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Sharon Salel (née McPhee) in Kelowna BC on Tuesday, August 12th at the age of 75 years. She passed away at Hospice House after a short battle with lung cancer. Sharon is predeceased by her husband Henry Salel, her parents Jack and Edith McPhee, her brother Jimmy McPhee and her sister Carol Manz.

She will be lovingly remembered by her brother Don McPhee, her son Rick (Josie) Salel, her daughter Leanne (Peter Baltutis) Salel, her cousins Allan (Mary) McPhee and Dan McPhee, and her beloved grandchildren RJ, Reymond, Hannah and Xavier. Along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom are all blessed to have known her. She will always be remembered for her strength and kind soul. A funeral service will be held at St. Theresa’s parish (750 Rutland Rd. N) on Saturday, August 16th at 9:00 a.m. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of Hospice House. They provided such wonderful and compassionate care for Sharon. Daisy Forbes

December 14, 1912 - July 14, 2014 Daisy Forbes died in her home at the Williams Lake Senior’s Village at the age of 101 on July 14, 2014 in Williams Lake, B.C. She was born in the village of Brown Hills Staffordshire England to Nellie (Farmer) and Alfred Jackson December 14, 1912.

She married Chris Forbes May 6, 1940 in Aldershot England. Chris passed away in 1999. Daisy lived independently until about the age of 98.

Daisy was a long term resident of Kelowna BC until she moved closer to her daughter in Williams Lake December 2011. Daisy and her family are grateful for all the loving gentle care she received from the WL Senior’s Village staff over the past year and a half.

She was well loved by her family, too, and will be missed by her daughter, Mary Jean (Midge) Smith and husband Tom of Williams Lake, their daughter Kendra (Smith) Dixson, husband Clinton and their baby, Rylan, of Kelowna. Rylan was born 6 days shy of 100 years of his great grandmother, and Midge and Tom’s son, Craig Smith, and his fiancé, Mara Farwell. She will be missed by her son, Douglas Christopher Forbes, and his wife Lisa (Jackson), Doug’s daughter Kristen (Forbes) Plowe, husband Bryan and children Allison, Norah and Roen of Kamloops, Doug’s son Michael Forbes and Michael’s son Ryder of Victoria, Doug’s daughter Jil Forbes of Vancouver and by Doug’s former wife Karen (Robson) Forbes of Chase.

Unique caregiver services tour to make stop in Kelowna With the number of caregivers on the rise in Canada—current estimates are pegged at more than five million, with one in four people caring for a family member—a not-for-profit organization is embarking on a cross-country tour in search of the most caring Canadians.

On Tuesday, Aug.19, the tour will make a stop in Kelowna.

It’s all part of an initiative launched by Canada Cares, a unique group that supports and celebrates caregivers of all kinds.

As part of the tour, which departed from Toronto Aug. 5 with at least 17 stops planned en route to Victoria—the Canada Cares team will meet with caregivers, local politicians and businesses across the country in an effort to identify Canada’s exceptional caregivers.

The second half of the tour, from Toronto eastward, will take place next year.

“Caregiving is a thankless job, but we’re out to change that,” said Caroline Tapp-McDougall, chair of Canada Cares.

She said the Canada Cares Tour team will hand out hundreds of gift cards, spa vouchers and caregiving support materials to those in need along the way.

“We know how much caregiving takes a toll on both individuals and families, and Canada Cares’ message to caregivers is: ‘You’re not alone—we’re here to support and recognize your selfless efforts.’”

The tour will be traveling in an MV-1, a $40,000 wheelchair accessible vehicle, which will be given away at the end of the tour to the person or organization who can demonstrate the greatest need.

As part of the tour, Canada Cares will also recognize communities and employers that are proving to be leaders in the ways they celebrate and support caregivers.

The Caregiver-Friendly Workplace Award, funded by Dr. Dan Andreae in partnership with the Canadian Abilities Foundation, and the Caring Communities Award

will be presented to one community and one busi-

ness or organization nationally, based on public

nominations.

SAN FRANCISCO—After you slip on Google Glass—the new computer you wear on your face—you get things rolling with the voice command, “OK, Glass.” Then you tell the eyeglass-like contraption what you want it to do—take a picture, shoot a video, give you directions, Tweet and more.

When I experimented recently with Google Glass in the City by the Bay, my second command was this: “OK, Glass. Help me see San Francisco through new eyes.”

SF and I have a sometimes-lessthan-OK relationship, mostly my fault (thanks to traffic tickets, romantic weekends that weren’t, body parts that malfunction), not the city’s (except for that epic rainstorm two years ago, not that I’m bitter).

But it’s also a familiar place that

offered a basis of comparison to help me see how well this titanium-framed little tech wonder would work and whether it could change a traveler’s perspective. Nob Hill’s Stanford

My experience with Glass? Just OK. I’m neither a techie nor a quick study. I use PCs and an iPhone (Glass is an Android device), and I think I know more about technology than I do, so I am grateful for electronics that don’t require a PhD to operate.

Glass didn’t require a doctorate, but it did take a bit of explanation, which is why I visited Google Base Camp in Los Angeles for a demo beforehand. There I learned that I needed some extra gear and other apps to get the most use out of Glass.

Even with that grounding, it wasn’t always easy to make Glass bend to my will, despite the voice command and the tap-and-swipe-the-temple-touchpad feature (the mouse, as it were).

“When I became acquainted with this program I felt it was one of the most meaningful in Kelowna,” explained Jim who has also helped initiate the Fresh Air Run for Strong Kids and other events raising funds and awareness for the cause. “The fact that there are so many families who require financial assistance to access Y programs is meaningful to us. Staff of Fresh Air have truly embraced Strong Kids and it has definitely been great for team building.”

For Grant, being involved in YMCA Cycle for Strong Kids is a great opportunity to get staff out of the office into other activities they enjoy. “It is also about empowering and enriching the lives of kids early

“This is a team building event every business and individual can enjoy.”

I captured some of it on Glass, some with a point-and-shoot camera and some with a single-lens-reflex camera.

Which was best? You can judge the results.

Perhaps the best travel use of Glass occurred 4on Sunday morning as I walked down California Street to Old St. Mary’s Cathedral. The Field Trip app offered quick lessons in history and architec-

ture along the way. Inside the church, I violated etiquette by using Glass— forgive me, Father— to photograph and take video of the interior, but I will treasure those visual mementos as reminders of an uplifting Sunday message.

In the end, the message of my Glass experience was better than the experience itself: Try something new. Change your perspective. Don’t be afraid to fail. It’s rarely fatal.
