MIRACLE TREAT DAY

Gangs seizing chance to grow BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF In a co-ordinated three-city drug raid, several Alberta law enforcement agencies executed search warrants, the culmination of a two-month investigation into the activities of an alleged gang operating in the Red Deer area. At the centre of their investigation was Cory Lesperance, whom police believe to be a member of the Red Scorpions, a gang based out of British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. Lesperance, 29, has ties to the Lower Mainland himself, according to Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta. During the July 23 raid, Lesperance was arrested, along with Robin Stewart, 52, at a Balmoral Heights residence east of Red Deer. A triple shooting had taken place at that same residence in March 2013. Two people were later arrested and a third went to hospital. Josh Voykin and Brad Cusler are in the midst of an extended preliminary inquiry into the incident, which will next be heard on Nov. 20 in Red Deer provincial court. Police believe Stewart was an associate of Lesperance, as were two others: Amber Theresa McLeod, 26, and Nicholas David James White, 21. White and McLeod were arrested at an Airdrie residence, where police believe weapons and drugs were stored before being brought to Red Deer for distribution. White also has a history with Lesperance, as the two were arrested on drug charges in November 2013.

Wendy Lance, Keenan Wong, 11, and Kyoshi Taguchi, 11, enjoy their Blizzard ice cream treats outside the downtown Dairy Queen in Red Deer Thursday. The proceeds from the sale of all Blizzard treats sold at Red Deer Dairy Queens will be donated to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton and the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. Last year, customers raised over $100,000 in Red Deer. This marks 30 years that Dairy Queen has partnered with the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across North America to help children in need.

Body of Sylvan Lake man found BY PAUL COWLEY ADVOCATE STAFF The body of a Sylvan Lake man missing since June in Colorado has been recovered from the creek where he was last seen. Sean Duplessis, 39, went missing after wading into Clear Creek west of Denver on June 7. The father of two had been in Colorado on business and was with a coworker when they went into the creek around midnight. The friend got out, but Duplessis disap-

peared and extensive searching failed to locate him. Colorado media reported on Tuesday that fishermen had found Duplessis’ body on Sunday nearly 30 km downstream from where he went missing. “We’re just happy we’re going to be able to bring him home,” said Sean’s mother Judy Duplessis, of Benalto. “I guess this way we get some closure at least. It’s better than not knowing.” Sean will be brought back to Alberta soon and will be laid to rest in

Eckville near his brother James, who died in 2011 of pneumonia. Dozens of people had left heartfelt messages of condolence as of Thursday on a Facebook page set up for Sean. “He was a really good man,” said Judy. “He was the best dad in the world. He was a wonderful son. He had lots and lots of friends and people cared about him.” A message on the Facebook page thanks supporters.

McIver vows to uphold promise to keep Michener open

Alberta PC leader candidate Ric McIver spoke outside the Michener Centre Thursday alongside Diane Esslinger, centre, of Edmonton, who has a brother living at the centre, and Joyce Tona, whose daughter, Diane Tona, also lives at the centre. McIver says that if he becomes the leader of the Alberta PC’s he will make sure government promises to keep the centre open will be upheld.

BARRSIDE

Those who have been moved out, and were there when the initial promise was made that they could stay, can return if they want, he said. The promise he is referring to is the one made by the Ed Stelmach Progressive Conservative government that residents would be able to live their lives out at Michener Centre. But, as political promises are wont to go, the province announced last year that older buildings at Michener would close, and 120 of the centre’s most severely developmentally disabled residents would be relocated. McIver now joins the growing list of high-profile politicians who have seen the light — pushing society’s most vulnerable citizens out of their longtime home isn’t such a smart idea.

Several down, one more to go. Only Jim Prentice is holding up the line. Progressive Conservative leadership candidate Ric McIver drove his truck into town Thursday afternoon, and declared at the entrance of Michener Centre that he would right a broken MARY-ANN promise if he becomes preBARR mier of Alberta. Those Michener residents who reside there now will be able to stay.
