Sylvan resident selling his fighter jet

Aircraft collector Ian Cotton is once again trying to unload his prized possession — a 1986 Sea Harrier FA2 jet.

His asking price is a cool $1.5 million.

The Sylvan Lake resident tried to sell the British Royal Navy fighter jet on eBay, but the U.S. based company shut down his ad before he could make a sale last year.

Cotton is hoping he will have better luck by listing an ad on Kijiji, the

According to his ad, the aircraft is “in outstanding condition” and comes with a Rolls-Royce Pegasus MK-107 engine, a parts donor extra fuselage and another harrier cockpit that can be used for display or the basis of a simulator.

But clearly it’s in no shape to fly.

Cotton, who owns a gas turbine company called Orbital Energy Limited, said the jet will require several parts and a little work before it will see the blue skies again. It was last flown in 2001.

“I’ve just got fed up with it,” said Cotton. “I’ve had it for a lot of years now. I had great intentions of getting it flight worthy but it takes a lot of time to do that. And I just don’t have the time and run my business.”

Cotton, who has always had an interest in aviation, has five other decommissioned planes in his

fleet on the outskirts of Red Deer in Burnt Lake Business Park. He bought the Sea Harrier about five years ago from the British government.

“A buddy of mine is flying one down (in the States) for air shows,” said Cotton. “It’s the only flying one in the world. They can be made flyable in the civilian market. But they are very expensive to run.”

Cotton isn’t sure it’s time to unload his entire fleet but he would be open to selling them.

Cotton could not recall how much money he spent on the plane but he estimated at least his asking price.

“It’s an unusual piece that’s for sure,” he said.

“You just can’t get hold of them. That’s why it has been a little more expensive than buying common Russian parts on the market.”

A few years ago residents might remember Cotton parked his jet on his Poplar Ridge acreage for a month to celebrate Canada Day.

Town reviewing insurance proposal Stanley Cup returning to Sylvan Lake Sunday on arena before demolish can begin

The town is evaluating a compensation proposal from its insurance company before demolition of the collapsed arena can begin.

“We are not able to take it down until we get permission from the insurance company,” Betty Osmond, the town’s chief administrative officer told councillors Monday night.

They’ve done extensive investigation into what happened and in July “satisfied themselves they understand the situation and came back with a proposal, an estimate of what they believe is fair compensation based on facility repair rather than demolition,” she said.

“From an insurance point of view it makes more sense to repair,” Osmond indicated, noting that the pad wasn’t damaged and the ice plant is still operational.

That being said, the town still plans to demolish the structure to make way for a new facility.

The town is now examining the insurance proposal with help from an outside engineering company to determine that everything is included and it’s the best deal for the community.

“The process is underway,” Osmond said.

“Essentially if we took down the building now we would be agreeing to what’s on the table. It wouldn’t be wise to do that now. We’re moving through the process as quickly as we can. It’s an insurance issue and it is in the town’s best interests to take our time on this.”

Building continuing rapid pace through summer season

There was considerable activity in the commercial area. Permits were issued for a patio at Buk Wildz on Lakeshore Drive ($5,000), for a second storey open-air sundeck at Wild Rapids Waterslides on Lakeshore Drive ($50,000), for tenant improvements in Cobb’s Block Central ($148,000), and for office space on Beju Industrial Drive ($144,000).

A permit was issued for four new prefabricated classrooms and a washroom at C. P. Blakely School valued at $203,196.16. Another permit was for interior renovations at Sylvan Lake Alliance Church.

In the residential category, permits were also issued for six decks, three basement developments, a shed, a moved-in accessory building, a detached garage and a hot tub.

Eleven new homes and nine rowhouse units accounted for more than $4.1 million in construction permitted by the town during July.

The month’s total building statistics of $4.833 million was more than double the same month in 2013, according to figures released by the town last week.

Year-to-date, construction in Sylvan Lake is ahead of the previous year by 31.3 per cent ($30.388 million compared to $23.139 million).

Four of the new homes are in the recently opened Vistas of Ryders Ridge subdivision, another four are in Ryders Ridge with one each in Beacon Hill, Crestview and Fieldstone subdivisions. Construction values ranged from $172,200 to $284,340.

The Stanley Cup, the Holy Grail of North American hockey, is making a return trip to Sylvan Lake on Sunday.

Resident Colin Fraser, a member of the Stanley Cup winning Los Angeles Kings is hosting the cup’s return after bringing it to the community two summers ago.

He tweeted last Thursday, “Attn: Central AB. Stanley Cup will be in Sylvan Lake Sunday Aug. 17. 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm. More details to come. Please come and check it out!”

The cup will be at Lions Legacy Park (50th Street and 48th Avenue) from 12:30-2:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved to The Royal Canadian Legion (4916 50 Avenue), according to a media advisory from Town of Sylvan Lake Communications Officer Joanne Gaudet.

Fraser will make a brief speech about 1 p.m. and then fans will be able to have their

Quick progress urged on demolition of ‘open coffin’ Frustration is rising day after day. Yet there appears to be an end in sight. The question is ‘will it be soon enough’?

We’re talking, of course, about demolition of the old arena which remains “an open coffin” in the centre of our recreation hub. More than six months after the January 20th collapse of a portion of the roof, bits and pieces still litter the ice surface and asphalt behind the building.

Nothing concrete has been done to remove the eyesore which is viewed everyday by people passing through the area.

For those planning events around the NHL pre-season hockey game between the Calgary Flames and Arizona Coyotes on Sept. 24, timely demolition of the building is imperative. If it’s not done by a certain date, then it would be better to leave the work until after the game so it doesn’t interfere with the festivities being planned by our dedicated volunteers.

However, our hope is that the town can come to a quick conclusion with its insurance company and work can begin soon.

We were told at Monday night’s council meeting that the insurance people have finally wrapped their heads around what happened and have made a proposal to the town based on facility repair.

Betty Osmond, the town’s chief administrative officer, said she can understand from an insurance point of view why it makes more sense for them to offer an amount for repair rather than demolition. Not all of the building or its infrastructure were destroyed.

However, the town still plans to demolish the facility to make way for the new NexSource Centre. The latest schematic design drawing and cost estimates for that were presented to the task force on Aug. 5 and the architect instructed to make some changes for another meeting next week.

Getting back to demolition, the ball is now in the town’s court. They’ve hired an engineering company to review the insurance proposal to ascertain that it’s in the best interests of the town to accept or to provide further information.

“We’re moving through the process as quickly as we can. It’s an insurance issue and it is in the town’s best interests to take our time on this,” Osmond told councillors.

munity, we also urge them to make sure this remains a top priority and to reach an agreement as quickly as possible.

Then demolition can occur and the site can be cleared.

It’s amazing that it’s just six weeks before the hockey game which is a major portion of the prize package Sylvan Lake won when it was named Kraft Hockeyville. We hope the eyesore is gone by the time that occurs.

Examine natural methods to control blue-green algae Dear Editor, I thank this paper for bringing forward relevant topics.

I apologize in advance for asking to have my submissions published. Many of my letters are public confirmations of letters I have already sent to council or other agencies. I find public exposure to be the most effective.

Recently the editorial was on blue green algae.

Sylvan Lake watershed is very lucky as few major streams flow into it. It’s mainly spring fed.

Blue green algae is ancient — and its carried on migrating waterfowl. It’s a very useful growth and is harvested as fertilizer in some areas. Yes it grows best in nutrient rich water. The good news for us in Alberta is that the growing season is very short.

The algae only grows in a very specific temperature range. It is always in the lake — rotting hay, other grasses, everything that in found in nature can feed it.

The annual swim staged by Sylvan Lake Service Club last Wednesday, August 1, was successfully run off under ideal weather and water conditions. The events were witnessed by a large crowd. ♦ ♦ ♦

The machines break the growth cycle of the algae in one form and it may be very useful for a dead water area such as the Marina Bay marine.

Stagnant water allows it to grow best. Motor boating, with large boats helps break the cycle, high winds and even harvesting the algae for resale are all great alternatives to taking a passive approach.

Lawn fertilizer is ridiculously miniscule compared to the power of a hay field or even a single cow.

You know I would like to put out my opinion, and it may be contrary to many.

As I fly over Alberta’s north I see thousands of lakes, fish habitat, duck habitat, protected yadayada. Is there any possibility we could make 50 lakes into people habitat? It seems to be a place where we go to breed and couple, do our waggle dance. Is there any possibility that Alberta could designate

A fire alarm at about 11:30 p.m.

Wednesday brought out the fire department and about 50 carloads of spectators, to extinguish a burning garbage incinerator at 5th Avenue and 4th Street S.E. ♦ ♦ ♦ The new Sylvan Lake Traffic Bylaw was given further study by council Monday evening and some further changes were made. An error in the bylaw provided for a $5 penalty for parking violations. This was changed

to a $2 penalty. A clause was added to provide for impounding of bicycles for traffic offences by cyclists. Sections were added to prohibit vehicles on the beach or pier except as authorized.

Penalties for throwing litter on the streets were also provided.

A letter was received from the Norglenwold summer cottage association regarding the formation of a summer village for the area of Northey’s Point, Glen Innes and Whitewold. The association sought to have the town secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Wilma Balfour, act as their secretary. Council felt that it wold be better if they could have a separate secretary and separate offices. However, in the event that use of town equipment and services were requested, a schedule of rates was drawn up to cover costs.

Beach towel safety campaign brought attention to water dangers

BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS A safety campaign warning lake-goers of water dangers caught the eyes of visitors to the lakefront July 24.

A number of beach towels, void of any occupants, in large, bold letters bore the message: “Before you think only other swimmers drown, have a word with yourself ”.

That message was accompanied by an array of hand-outs and leaflets explaining the dangers of water activity, as well as safety tips to help avoid those dangers.

Reminding parents to keep their children nearby while they’re in the water and encouraging life jacket use were the primary goals of the initiative, which took place in the middle of Drowning Prevention Week, July 20 to 26.

A Safe Communities Central Alberta media release notes that the majority of Canadian drowning deaths occur between May and August, making the event’s timing particularly important.

dren in Canada since 2004. Each year, another 140 are taken to hospital after coming close to drowning.

Organizers feel most drownings and near-drownings can be avoided by simply influencing a change in people’s attitudes and behaviours.

“We all lead busy and hectic lives — taking that one moment to have a word with yourself could prevent injury and save your life or your child’s life,” read one of the hand-outs spread among the towels.

The majority of drownings in Canada take place in outdoor areas such as lakes, rivers and streams, according to the Community Against Preventable Injuries. Young children in the bathtub are also at risk, it notes.

Statistics show that although some Canadians believe their children to be safe near water without wearing a lifejacket, the majority of drowning victims enter the water without meaning to do so.

Creation of 73 residential lots for the second phase of The Vista in Ryders Ridge subdivision was approved by Sylvan Lake Municipal Planning Commission members at their meeting Aug. 5.

The lots are in the northeast portion of the quarter section, adjacent to the CN Trail which runs across Sylvan

Lake.

Access to this phase of the Vista subdivision will be from Ryders Ridge Boulevard.

The area is currently zoned with 21 lots as Medium Lot Residential (R1A) and 52 lots as Narrow Lot General Residential (R5) along with Public Facility District (PF) for municipal reserve and public utility lot areas.

Besides housing, the second phase includes a storm water pond.

I remember growing up in Montreal and the grocery store on the corner a block from where we lived. Mum would sometimes need a loaf of bread or a quart of milk in a glass bottle. Being the oldest , she would send me.

In Isaiah 6:8 NLT... then I heard The Lord asking, “Whom shall I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us? I said, Here I am. Send me.” Here is Isaiah being called.

“Send Me”... two words. Every missionary has answered this call, sometimes reluctantly. The SEND is okay but the ME... are you sure Lord!

Football players often do not start off as stars. They get drafted, join their team, never miss a practice and game after game never get to play. Until one game the coach

calls your number. He is SENDING YOU. No hesitation, helmet is pulled on and the next moment in the game.

Why is Church not like team sports or a military army.

Church unfortunately always has too many fans sitting, versus participating. Service after service the call to action is given to send messengers of His good news.

Church should be practice time and when we leave a service we now become a SENT ONE and enter the Game.

Every day we come across hurting people, struggling people. Angry people and lost people. Do we recognize them as people?

This week is an opportunity to SEND ME and bring a healing word to Sylvan Lake and area. This week SEND me Lord and make me a blessing to reach others with your love and compassion.

Healthy Families is a free home visitation program designed to support new parents by providing information on parenting, child development, and parent – child (0 – 5 years of age) interactions. This individual will work closely with a team leader/supervisor, public health nurse, other care providers and the family to assess needs and create goals and strategies to support the healthy development of the family. The Healthy Families Home Visitor will initiate and maintain regular (at least weekly) support with families. Hours and days of work will vary depending on program need.

Responsibilities: . Complete family assessment during home visits. . Conduct home visits throughout the community cluster. . Connecting the family with community resources. . Document specific information, forward required information to Regional Office. . Contact the family to offer the program, and acting as a liaison until home visiting begins. . Long weekend antics; warning issued for pair firing potato gun Saturday, August 2nd 4:26 a.m. – RCMP received a call from a Red Deer County peace officer who stopped a vehicle roadside on Township Road 380. The 24-year-old male GDL driver from Markerville was found to be in possession of alcohol. A breath sample was taken and the male was suspended for 30 days with his vehicle towed from the scene.

8:23 a.m. – Police attended an address on 45th Street after a complaint was received of a group of people firing a potato gun in the yard. Constables located a male and a female at the residence who admitted to using a homemade potato gun to shoot off potatoes. They were issued a warning.

8:48 p.m. – A 911 call was received of an unwanted male at an address in Hewlett Park Landing. The male had been walking around a parking lot in the area for approximately two hours and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or another substance. He was last spotted walking around Waves Coffee House where RCMP located him. The 24-year-old Red Deer male was arrested for public intoxication and was lodged in cells until sober.

10:07 p.m. – A fight between two females at Chief ’s Pub and Eatery resulted in police and EMS attendance. A 911 call was placed after the two females in their late twenties began having a physical altercation. RCMP found one of the females lying on the floor with a lump on her head. She did not want to press charges. The other female fled the scene in a vehicle. The matter remains under investigation.

Sunday, August 3rd 2:22 a.m. – An 18-year-old male is facing an assault charge in relation to a domestic dispute on 35th Street at Lakeshore Drive. Witnesses reported hearing a female screaming and a male yelling up and down the beach. The male was seen pushing the female as they were going into the bush area along the beach. The male was arrested in the area and the 17-year-old female was also charged

Educating

- Daryl Borchuk of Atco Gas presented a $2,000 cheque to Sylvan Lake Fire Department July 28, accepted by Fire Chief Cliff Brausen and Deputy Chief Steve Scanland. The donation is to support fire safety education programming offered by Sylvan Lake Fire Department. The program is delivered to elementary school students.

It addresses a variety of topics including escape plans and exit drills, matches and lighter safety, dialing 9-1-1 and emergency information, smoke detectors and firefighter gear. Atco Gas is also provincial sponsor of the Alberta Fire Commissioner’s children’s program delivered to elementary schools across the province during Fire Safety Week in October.

Hells Angels visited Sylvan during annual tour

With a police helicopter in the air, and a heavy police presence throughout the downtown area, members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club, along with a number of other clubs rode into Sylvan Lake Saturday afternoon, stopping for a while along Lakeshore Drive, some enjoying ice cream cones, before departing for Bentley and other locations.

Several current and past residents of Sylvan Lake were remembered when names were approved for the Crestview subdivision at Monday’s council meeting.

Following the town’s street naming policy, Lamont Land Inc. submitted a series of names with historic significance that had been obtained from Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society.

They also supplied several other names which were adopted.

Business owner furious about road closure for Farmers’ Market

Closure of 50th Street in the downtown area all day tomorrow (Friday) prompted an angry response from one business owner at Monday’s council meeting.

The street is being closed from 9 a.m. to allow for the Farmers’ Market which will run from 4-7:30 p.m. in conjunction with Jazz At The Lake festivities.

Sheree Davies of Bayview Café, which is located in Cobb’s Block Central, blasted the town during

council’s open microphone session.

“You’re completely denying us access to our business,” she said.

Closure of the street to vehicle traffic will affect her business which she said is a destination which people drive to.

She complained that in the previous two years, “this doesn’t work for us yet it’s going on a third year”.

“People who go to the market already go to the market, they’re not going to come to my place when vendors are blocking access.”

Another complaint was that she received one week’s notice of the street closure and there was no con-

sultation.

“Why are you denying me to run my business when you’re allowing someone else to run their business. We can’t go another year with this,” Davies said.

“To close off the street for the entire day is ludicrous.”

Later in their agenda, councillors heard from Vicki Kurz, the town’s economic development officer.

She indicated when the application came in this year it was approved by staff as there were no complaints on file from previous years.

“This is typically done in co-operation with the chamber of commerce, but they don’t have a manager at this time,” Kurz said.

Once the town’s Beach Ambassadors hand delivered the notices last Friday, she received complaints from three of the 17 affected businesses

that their storefront or entranceway would be blocked. The market organizer has been very accommodating in changing the layout to solve their concerns, Kurz indicated.

Two of the four businesses that complained said ‘no, don’t move the market, we wish the street wasn’t closed so long’.

Several of the councillors voiced concern about the length of the closure and asked staff to assist if the time could be reduced.

“I’m so in favour of having this down there,” said Councillor Dale Plante. “It’s sad two or three people can ruin it for everyone.” But he added he didn’t agree with the amount of time the street would be closed.

“Let’s not inconvenience all the businesses that aren’t benefitting from the Farmers’ Market,” he said, noting the optometrist and chiropractor.

Betty Osmond, the town’s chief administrative officer, said this wasn’t something the Farmers’ Market operator saw as a business opportunity. They did it reluctantly. It was something they were asked to take on to add more vibrancy to the downtown area.

Councillor Graham Parsons noted the town is currently working on plans to redesign 50th Street with a more festive attitude.

Bentley Rodeo successful in 48th year

BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Just two years shy of its 50th year, the annual Bentley Rodeo was again a success attracting spectators and contestants from all over the province during the weekend.

“We had a really good show here this year, and we were happy with everything,” said rodeo committee chair Jeremy Park.

He attributed a large part of the event’s success to solid numbers seen over the two days of competition.

Rodeo entries were up from last year, with much of the increase coming from the bull riding event. Attendance numbers were also steady both days.

“We haven’t got (attendance numbers) totalled yet, but judging by our income, we did fairly well,” said Park. “We usually get good crowds both nights.”

At the mid-point of both nights, empty seats were hard to come by, he added.

It’s that kind of support organizers need to keep the event going in the future.

“We get good support from the locals and from the business community, and lots of volunteers,” said Park. “As long as the volunteers are there to help, and we keep getting the support of the community and the businesses, I think we’re going to carry on.”

Because of Bentley’s proximity to outdoor recreational hubs such as Sylvan Lake and Gull Lake, a large part of the rodeo’s crowd is made up of visitors to those two areas. The rodeo provides them an exciting way to spend their evenings, potentially escaping inclement weather in the process.

That’s just one of the benefits of holding the rodeo inside, as has been the case since its inception nearly 50 years ago.

“We’re not usually affected by weather, either being too hot or raining,” said Park. “(Holding it inside) makes it a lot easier for the committee to not have to make any last-minute decisions on whether to cancel or not.

“We’ve never had to cancel a rodeo yet, and being indoors is the biggest part of that.”

The rodeo’s timing in the summer, he added, couldn’t be any better.

“It’s right in the middle of summer holidays, so we get lots of the lake traffic, and then lots of people are on holidays, so we do get good crowds every year.”

Though not available at press time, official rodeo results were expected to eventually be posted on the Central Alberta Rodeo Association website at www.cararodeo.com.

Victim Services golf tournament a success; program advocates needed

A vital community organization received much needed support when Sylvan Lake and District Victim Services’ Annual Golf Tournament was held at Sylvan Lake Golf and Country Club last Wednesday.

Covering the same area as the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment — an area that, as well as the Town of Sylvan Lake, includes Bentley, Eckville and Benalto — the reach of Sylvan Lake Victim Services extends all over Central Alberta.

For that reason, fundraisers such as the golf tournament are particularly important.

“It’s our major fundraiser for the year,” said Victim Services assistant co-ordinator Angela Kinzel, adding funds raised help sustain the Victim Services program. “The main proceeds of the (tournament) funding go towards Victim Services advocate recruitment and training and towards the program in general.”

At a time when demand far exceeds supply, recruiting advocates for the program is more important now than it’s perhaps ever been.

Currently, only four advocates serve the entire Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment area. Those advocates are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Having more would allow for greater flexibility among the advocates, and lighten their individual workloads, according to Kinzel.

Eight, she feels, would be an ideal number.

“Our goal is to have enough advocates that you only have to be on call one week of the month, but obviously when there’s only four of us, we can’t do that,” she said. “We are in major need of advocates.”

Victim Services advocates are volunteers who

respond to situations dealt with by the RCMP where their information, support or assistance may be of help to victims of crisis.

Potential advocates are required to undergo a security check before undertaking training in more than 20 different areas of trauma, grief and crime.

Once fully trained, they may be called to assist the RCMP with any number of different situations. The wide spectrum sees them doing everything from offering support to victims of domestic violence, to notifying loved ones of a sudden death.

“They brush on a lot of different topics,” said Kinzel. “It’s anything the RCMP deals with.”

Compassion, good listening skills and a caring personality are the most important personal traits required to become a Victim Services advocate, she added.

It wasn’t known by press time how much money had been raised through the golf tournament. Kinzel said, however, that participation numbers were up from the last time the tournament was held in 2012, with 144 golfers taking part.

“In the last few years, we’ve averaged around 120 to 130,” she said. “This year it was sold right out.”

More information about becoming a Victim Services advocate is available by calling 403-8587255. Because of the vastness of the area covered by the Sylvan Lake detachment, volunteers may come from any part of the Central Alberta area.

“It’s Sylvan Lake and district,” said Kinzel. “We cover Bentley and Eckville for the small towns, and then all the summer villages and everything in between — all the rural and urban.

“We’re always looking for volunteers.”

Boaters educated about dangers posed by mussels; how to clean watercraft

BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS As the province ramps up its campaign to keep Alberta free of zebra and quagga mussels, local agencies were involved in an education campaign Aug. 1.

Organized by Cajun Paradis, Lacombe County’s acting environmental coordinator, a four hour blitz took place at Sunbreaker Cove boat launch where about 20 boat owners and more than 40 people on foot received information about the pesky culprits that are destroying aquatic habitat in Eastern Canada and throughout the United States.

She indicated they weren’t just trying to educate boat owners about what the invasive species are, but also how to prevent them getting a ride into Alberta lakes through proper cleaning techniques — clean, drain and dry.

Joining Lacombe County were representatives of the summer villages around the lake, the Town of Sylvan Lake, Alberta Environment staff, conservation officers from Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation, community peace officers and members of the province’s commercial vehicle enforcement department.

“We got lots of great feedback,” said Paradis. “There was a lot of shock value from the (mussel) specimen on the table.”

Besides posters which read: Wanted Dead Not Alive For Devastating Aquatic Habitat; Invasive Mussels Pose Threats; and Don’t Let Invasive Mussels Catch A Ride, the group handed out information

Zebra and quagga mussels, nonnative species, are currently doing damage in the Great Lakes and arrived in Manitoba last year. There have been no reports of the mussels in Alberta yet, but boats stopped at the U.S. border, headed to Sylvan and other Central Alberta lakes have been found carrying the creatures.

Voluntary boat inspections were offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the overflow parking lot at Sunbreaker Cove as part of the awareness campaign.

Zebra and quagga mussels are virtually impossible to eradicate. One female can produce up to a million eggs in a year and they will cost the province $75 million annually if they sneak across the border.

The best thing boaters can do to prevent the spread of mussels is clean, drain and dry their watercraft, Paradis emphasized.
