Lakecity students win 4-H scholarships Two Williams Lake youth are among only 100 4-H Club members in Canada to receive $1,000 scholarships supported by the Chrysler Foundation and Chrysler Canada. The Chrysler Foundation donated $100,000 to the 4-H Canada scholarship fund to be shared between 100 deserving 4-H members from across Canada who are pursuing post-secondary education in 2014. Matt Armes and Amy Stafford are each recipients of the scholarships which were presented by Kerry Gustafson, owner of Gustafson’s Chrysler Jeep in Williams Lake. Gustafson says he is happy to see that two of the 100 Chrysler Foundation awards went to Williams Lake area students. “Gustafsons has been proud to support 4-H in Williams Lake for more than 30 years and we are very proud to present these scholarships to Williams Lake area 4-H members,” Gustafson says. Amy, a Chimney Valley 4-H alumni, is going into the third year of a Bechelor of Arts program at the

for the B.C. 4-H Provincial Scholarships this year, says Kevin Rothwell, B.C. 4-H manager. “Awarding these scholarships was a very difficult task as all applicants were truly outstanding. Congratulations to the scholarship winners and all of the deserving applicants.” In addition to the Chrysler Foundation, 4-H scholarship contributors include the Chernoff Family

Foundation; B.C. Youth in Agriculture Foundation; Wim Zylmans Agriculture Memorial Fund, Vancouver Foundation; B.C. Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation; B.C. Young Farmers; Mutual Fire Insurance Company of B.C.; The Western Producer; B.C. 4-H Foundation; and B.C. 4-H Provincial Council. Operating for almost 100 years, the B.C. 4-H pro-

gram provides more than 2,100 young people with an opportunity to learn how to become productive, self-assured adults who can make their community an excellent place in which to live, Rothwell says. This is fostered through project and program work, experiences with other 4-H club members and leaders and participation in district, regional and provincial programs.

Learning to Do... by Doing Key leader welcomes visitors Fred Stafford Key Leader On behalf of the Williams Lake and District 4-H Senior Council, we would like to welcome you to the 56th Annual 4-H Show and Sale, being held Aug. 16 to 20 at the Williams Lake Stockyards. The Williams Lake District consists of eight clubs: Big Lake, Canim Valley, Chimney Valley, Clinton, Horsefly, Lone Butte, Rose Lake/Miocene and Springhouse. Approximately 170 members are enrolled in a variety of projects, from market animals such as beef, sheep, and swine, to non-animal projects including gardening, photography and small en-

gines. The members have been working hard since January, completing a variety of activities including speeches or demonstrations, judging rallies, club fundraisers, record books, and project achievement days in order to attend this week long event. This year marks the 100th year of 4-H in B.C. Since 1914, 4-H has been teaching youth to use their Head, Heart, Hands and Health to develop their leadership skills, ability to work as a team and boost their overall confidence. 4-H provides youth with opportunities beyond their home communities as well, through camps, provincial level competitions, national award trips, and scholar-

ship programs. These opportunities would not be possible without the numerous volunteer leaders, parents, and a supportive community like Williams Lake and surrounding area. Your generous support over the years has helped to give hundreds of kids a program that teaches them to strive for excellence and achieve lifelong goals through the motto “Learn to Do by Doing.” We welcome you to discover the program that is “more than you ever imagined” this week by attending the 56th Annual 4-H Show and Sale. B.C. 4-H celebrates 100 years This year, 2014, marks the 100th anniversary for B.C. 4-H. B.C. 4-H was formed in 1914, just one year after 4-H Canada and Manitoba 4-H were created. Alberta and Saskatchewan will celebrate their 4-H centennials in 2017. The 4-H organization actually started as the Boys and Girls Club and was renamed 4-H in 1952. The first programs focused on potatoes, then expanded to include poultry. The mandate of the B.C 4-H is “to train the heads and hands of the boys and girls, to give them an interest in outdoor life and to encourage on the part of all B.C. citizens, a stronger and more intelligent interest in agriculture.” More than 200 kids be-

tween ages 10 and 18 were involved in 4-H competitions in its first year of operation. Today 2,100 members ages six to 21 belong to B.C. 4-H Clubs. Across Canada there are 24,780 4-H members. Horse, beef and swine are the most popular programs, with interest growing in dog, photography and outdoor living. In addition to these projects young people on these pages also enjoy raising rabbits, chickens, turkeys, sheep; sewing, photography, working on small engines, and other activities where interest is shown and leaders are available. Non-agricultural projects such as crafts and outdoor living were added in the 1970s and 1980s. B.C. 4-H is a program for

children and youth ages six to 18. 4-H Canada recently extended the upper age of 4-H members to age 25 to coincide with new programs for young adults. A new Future Leaders program for youth ages 21 to 25. B.C. 4-H also has a scholarship program for post secondary students. This pilot program to foster leadership and business skills among post-secondary students is scheduled to begin in 2015. B.C. 4-H also has a post secondary scholarship program. About 22 per cent of B.C. 4-H members are considered urban, although many participate in agricultural clubs and projects. Learning to Do... by Doing Springhouse 4-H Club Hi! My name is Courtney Rankin. I’m in the Springhouse 4-H Club and this year will be my eighth year in 4-H. Throughout my time in 4-H I have done a few different kinds of projects. I have always done swine, but I did a rabbit and a sheep project, both for two years, along with my swine project. My swine this year is named Lil’ Miss. She is a Landrae Yorkshire cross and I purchased her from Fox Dairy Farms in April. Right at the time I got her she loved being scratched and would roll over almost instantly. I’m sure enjoying the experience and commitment to raising a swine in 4-H this year. I hope I’ll see you at show and sale week, which starts SaturHello there. My name is Orrin Watkinson and this is my third year as a senior member of the Springhouse 4-H Club. I am 16 years old and this is my seventh year in 4-H. In previous 4-H years I have completed Cloverbud, Fed Lamb, and Beef projects. This year I am doing a Fed Steer by the name of Woodhouse. He is a Hereford and weighs around 1,250 pounds. He is very friendly and easy to work with. Our lot number is 153. Woodhouse is a homegrown steer that I purchased from my grandparents, Fred and Barb Watkinson who own Foster Bar Ranch in Lillooet, B.C. I joined 4-H so that I

Williams Lake and area 4-H Club members can be found out and about in their communities participating in all kinds of events such as petting zoos at special community events and parades such as the Daybreak Rotary Stampede Parade. Honouring the 100th anniversary of 4-H in B.C. the Daybreak Rotary Stampede Parade theme this year was brought to you by the number 4 and the letter H. The grand prize for the winning theme entry was $500 which was won by the Springhouse 4-H Club and their float pictured above. In other parade results the Horsefly 4-H Club won first for best float and first in the youth category. The Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club won third place in the Youth category. Joey Augustine of the Horsefly 4-H Club won best dressed girl in the youth category and best overall youth entry.

Good luck at your Show & Sale! Orrin Watkinson with Woodhouse could learn about raising a fed steer and all that is involved in showing and grooming a beef project. I enjoy attending the 4-H functions and getting together with other clubs,

especially at show and sale. 4-H is a great way to learn to work with animals and members alike and to do various events and projects. 4-H teaches many life skills.

Learning to Do... by Doing Springhouse 4-H Club Hello. My name is Maeghan Watkinson and I am 19 years old. I was first introduced to 4-H when I was six years old in Merritt. I did my first year of 4-H there and I have now been in 4-H for a grand total of 13 years, by being a part of the Springhouse 4-H Club. This is sadly my final year in 4-H. 4-H has brought me

Hi, my name is Mason Carr-Humphries. I am ten years old and this is my first year in 4-H. I first learned about 4-H when my mom and my, Auntie Roon, told me stories about when they were in 4-H a really long time ago. I thought it sounded fun and interesting, and so far it has been both. I am in the Springhouse 4-H club and I am enjoying my experiences in 4-H (except for the record book, which has a lot of math in it). I especially like that I am learning all about raising an animal and it gets me out to the barn! My project this year is sheep. My sheep’s name is Buster, and he is a market lamb. I chose the name Buster because I thought it was a cute name and it made me think of “Mutton Busting” which, if you’ve ever watched it, is pretty darn funny! Buster is a Suffolk-

closer to the value of agriculture and enabled me to obtain a greater understanding of the industry. I have to thank my parents for allowing me to have this opportunity to become more informed so in the near future I will have the chance to have my own ranch like my grandparents. Thanks also to all the past buyers of 4-H who have not only helped my determi-

nation at becoming more acquainted with the agriculture industry, but have also helped enable 4-H to continue to foster new generations. Throughout my time in 4-H I have completed many projects. I first did Cloverbuds for two years, and then went into sewing. I was the only one who wanted to do sewing, so my mother became my

leader and I did this for two years before switching into swine. This year I will have done a swine project for eight years. I have also done sheep for four years. This year I am finishing my 4-H membership by raising a swine project. My swine is a purebred Yorkshire. I purchased her in April from Walter Hengstler. Her breeder is Mike Soth from the coast. I named my pig Darling; we will be under the lot number 152 during the show and sale this year. This fall, after the show and sale is over, I am going off to Thompson Rivers University to complete my third year of my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Kamloops. The show and sale is a must see for animal lovers and children. There are always classes throughout the long week designated to particular projects and everyone is welcome to attend.

Judging rallies are one of the ways On June 14, there was a 4-H judging rally at the Williams Lake Stockyards which started at 9:30 a.m. All the 4-H clubs came to the stockyards to judge. For those of you who don’t know what a judging rally is, it’s an event that the 4-H council puts on. All the clubs in 4-H can attended. The members of 4-H get judging cards and judge the four projects they are assigned to judge. Judging rallies help kids learn how to compare four different things and learn skills for the future. This year there were many projects in the judging rally. There was photography, breeding heifers, poultry, horse, small engines, swine, foods, sheep, and gardening. I had to judge breeding heifers, horse, gardening, and photography. The June judging rally was a huge success. I would like to thank the 4-H Council for putting on the judging rallies this year and the 4-H leaders for organizing your clubs to come to the judging rallies. The next and last Judging Rally of the year will be on Saturday, August 16th at the Williams Lake Stockyards. I am the Chimney Valley 4-H club reporter, along with my friend Ashley Howell. Springhouse 4-H Club Hi, my name is Tyrell Watkinson. I am 18 years old and this is my 10th year in 4-H. I am also a senior member of the Springhouse 4-H Club and my lot number is 154. I am doing a beef project again. Previous years I have completed Clover-buds, Fed Sheep, Ewe Lamb, Ewe with Lambs, and Swine. My Beef project’s name is Archer because he personally matches a character from a television show. I purchased him from Fred and Barb Watkinson, my grandparents, who own a ranch in Lillooet. Archer is a Red Angus steer crossed with a Her-

Tyrell Watkinson with Archer eford and he has a little bit of Simmental in him. He has a wild, yet curious personality. He behaves well, but I still have a lot of work to do with him. I like being in 4-H because I like working with farm animals.

Also I like to visit with my many friends in 4-H too. I was reluctant to join 4-H this year, but a certain “someone” persuaded me. I am glad I was encouraged to do 4-H again this year because I know it will be a great experience.

Learning to Do... by Doing Canim Valley 4-H Club enjoys first Stampede Parade By Michelle Archie Canim Valley 4-H Club Well another year has come and gone and we are off to the annual show and sale in Williams Lake from August 16 to 21 at the Williams Lake Stockyards. We would like to thank our sponsor Canim Lake Band for another year of great support and the volunteer leaders and parents for their assistance with the club. Without them we wouldn’t have a club. This year we have 21 members attending the show with their projects – beef, sheep, swine, photography, small engine, and our Cloverbuds. The members have been busy throughout the year making sure that their Hello! My name is Jolee Campbell, a member of the Canim Valley 4-H Club. This is my second year with a ewe lamb at foot. My ewe is named Rosiitta. She is a Cheviot cross breed and she had her baby, Marcie, on St. Patricks Day, March 15, 2014. She is all white except for a bit of freckles on her nose. She is Cheviot cross with a Texel and she is about 85-90 pounds. I would say she is the hardest lamb to work with, she’s stubborn. When I first walked her she did a flip in the air. When we did her first wash she kinda freaked out when the water first touched her. My little sister, Lexus and I laugh a lot when

projects are completed and ready for show. Along with working with their projects the club members had the opportunity to participate in three parades this year, it meant some work but they pulled it off. The group entered the Little Britches Rodeo parade, Aboriginal Day parade, and for the first time the Williams Lake Stampede parade. The members and leaders enjoyed themselves and were excited to see the response of the on-lookers, the comments they could hear them yelling out – “way to go Canim Lake,” “good job Canim Lake,” just to mention a few. Canim Valley 4-H Club has been in operation now for 27 years and is known

to be the only First Nations Club in B.C., and possibly Canada and we are proud to represent all First Nations. We would encourage other communities to get involved it has helped the members do great things. We have been contacted by the 4-H Canada office to speak about how to get the communities involved and what has made the club so successful. My response would be the support of the Canim Lake Band and the volunteers. We look forward to another successful show and wish all the members in the district good luck. Learning to Do... by Doing Canim Valley 4-H Club Hello. My name is Kalei Dixon and I have been in 4-H for a total of nine years! I always come back because it’s a great experience every year. I would like to introduce to you to, Johnny Bravo. This is my steer for this year, and it has been a pleasure to have him. He is always eating and running around. He has been a handful, though, but that’s okay, he is still number one in my eyes. I remember when I first washed him, because he turned back to white once again. Learning to Do... by Doing Big Lake 4-H Club Hi there! My name is Maria DiMarco and I am a junior member of the Big Lake 4-H Club. This is my fourth and final year as a junior. Next year I will be a senior. What fun! But of course, that is in the future.  This year in 4-H I am raising a market pig. Her name is Polka and she is light orange with big black spots. This is my second year raising a pig in 4-H. Previously I have done dog with my papillon Shasta, and photography. Last year my pig was the smallest pig at all of show and sale. She was only 190 pounds! Right now, on July second, my pig, Polka, is 180. This year I was aiming for a bigger pig, and that’s what I got.   Hi, my name is Lauren Swan and I am with the Big Lake 4-H Club. I’m 14-years-old and this is my fourth year in 4-H. I really enjoy 4-H for many reasons. It is a great way to learn how to take care of animals by learning what their needs are. This year I am raising a market steer for the first time. My steer’s name is Tony. Tony is a very friendly steer who loves grain and hay. Tony is a Red Angus with a quarter Simmental. Last year he came to show and sale as he was the calf in my cousin’s cow/calf pair. His most recent weight was 1,270 pounds on July 12.

Hello again! My name is Georgia DiMarco, and I am in the Big Lake 4-H Club. This is my third year as a junior. That would make me 11-years-old. This year I am raising two lambs, one market lamb and one ewe lamb. My market lamb, Moose, (in the picture above) is a Katahdin Blackbelly cross. He was born Jan. 28, 2014, one day after my ewe lamb. Bessie (in the picture) is a Dorper Blackbelly cross, born Jan. 27, 2014. Both of my lambs are Hair sheep, which means they don’t have to be sheared but instead, hair sheep shed like dogs. Two years from now, Bessie should have a lamb or two at her side in 4-H. At the auction, at the end of Show and Sale, Moose will be sold to someone in the crowd. My favourite thing about 4-H is the challenge of raising and training your animal.

Georgia DiMarco with Moose My last year’s market lamb, Pepper, is Bessie’s full brother. They were both born from the craziest mother in our flock, so at first it is very, very hard to get near them. Moose, on the other hand, was born from a mother that was bottle fed from the moment she was born. Moose’s mom is the tamest in our flock, so it was easy to tame him. This year, Bessie is my greatest challenge, and my

greatest experience in 4-H so far. Maybe you could have an experience like this someday too!

Hello, my name is Emily Swan. I am 10 years old and I am a junior member. I am a member in the Big Lake 4-H Club. This is my second year in 4-H and my first year in swine and poultry. I enjoy being in 4-H. I have two projects this year: a market swine named Patrick and chickens. Patrick is a pink pig and he is a Landrace male pig. He lives in a pen with his sister. When I scratch Patrick he flops over and will almost fall asleep. I am sure enjoying the experience of raising a pig this year. Patrick loves to roll in mud and he gets really dirty when he does roll.

Learning to Do... by Doing Chimney Valley 4-H Club Hello, my name is Parker Sokolan. I am 11 years old and this year is my forth year in 4-H and my second year having a beef project. Sanjay is my steer and he is a Hereford. He is brown and white with a big white face and he is very friendly. He is funny and sweet. He always puts a smile on my face especially because he often lies down and I can’t get him up. So sometimes I just bathe him like that! He just a perfect steer for me; there’s no doubt about that. I feed Sanjay and my brother and sister’s steers every night and sometimes in the morning.

This year I have chosen to do market swine and small engines. I named my pig Bugs Bunny. She weighs about 150 pounds right now. I think I’m on the right track to achieve the perfect market weight when show and sale comes around. For small engines I’m working on a lawn tractor. Learning to Do... by Doing Horsefly 4-H Club members enjoy photography Hi, My name is Michaela Wilson and I am 14 years old. This is my first year in 4-H. My chosen category is photography. Our team leader has met with us over the past few months and I have learned many new things such as, with my camera I have learned how to make the photos darker or lighter depending on what you need. If the photo does not look right you use the exposure compensation on the camera it is a (+/-) sign. Then there is the aperture which is the (F) symbol

I am 16 years old and I have been doing swine projects for three years. This year I am doing another swine project. My pig is a Yorkshire and his name is Larry. Right now he weighs about 150 pounds and I hope he weighs around 260 pounds at the show and sale. I purchased Larry from Wally Hengstler in Horsefly. I joined 4-H so that I could learn about raising animals and I have had nothing but fun since I joined four years ago. The thing I like the best about 4-H is that you’re always leaning new stuff. her face and legs. I got her home May 1. I’ve recently been feeding her separately from the other sheep to make sure she is getting enough food and to have some quality time with her. Learning to Do... by Doing Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club Hi, my name is Landon Wiggins and I am a member of the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club. I am nine years old and this is my first year in 4-H. I am enjoying my first year and I am learning so many new things about horses as well as other animals. This year my project is horse. My horse’s name is Lightning. He is a 12-year-old Clydesdale/ Quarter horse cross. He is a good boy sometimes and other times he is bad and does not want to listen to me. We have been practicing lots and are very excited for 4-H Show and Sale.

Hello. My name is Kimberly French and I am member of Rose Lake/ Miocene 4-H Club. I chose two projects, horse and swine. Hawk is a 23-year-old Quarter Horse X gelding which I enjoy to ride very much. He won’t be for sale, but my pig named Pigmella will be. She is a purebred Berkshire which had to be bottle fed the first few weeks of her life because her mom rejected her piglets as they were born during the cold spell in March. Only Pigmella and two of her brothers survived the -30 C. She is very calm and friendly and comes when called. Besides eating the long green grass, she likes to eat watermelon. The Williams Lake/ 100 Mile district is celebrating its 56th annual 4-H Show and Sale. Celebrating 100 years of 4-H in B.C. members are as excited as ever. For those of you unfamiliar with 4-H, show and sale is an event that concludes the 4-H year for youth of all ages, leaders and parents. All the work put into our beef, sheep, pigs, horses, poultry, and a variety of other projects throughout the year comes to fruition August 15 through 20. My name is Skye Forcier. I’m a 10-year member the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club and on behalf of all 4-H members would like to invite you attend this year’s show and sale which takes place at the Williams Lake Stockyards, Hi. My name is Ian Doherty. I am with the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club. This is my third market lamb project and my favourite lamb to work with. Odie is my lamb’s name. Odie was born on our farm and I have watched her grow from a newborn lamb. I am also raising a dry yearling ewe, Beth. Hello fellow citizens of Williams Lake and area! It’s Brenda Van Wyck here, from the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H Club. You may also know me as the club reporter. I would like to tell you a bit more about me and what I do in 4-H. I am 17-years-old. I have been in 4-H for three years now, and this year I am doing completely different 4-H projects than I have done in the past. My projects are market steer and foods. My steer’s name is, Mumford, after the band Mumford and Sons. The day I chose Mumford was at the Colour V Ranch when helping my parents pick out their steer. Immediately after I saw him I knew that he was the market steer for me. So I bought him and next thing I knew I had a big red animal with a white face staring back at me through the pen. He has been easy to work with, curious and

Hi my name is Kimberley Davis (Lot number 103) and I’m from the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H club. Rose Lake is currently the biggest 4-H club in the district with 47 members. Our clubs projects include: Sheep, Horse, Photography, Foods, Swine, Tractor, and Cloverbuds. I am in foods and market lamb. Leilo is a Suffolk/Southdown cross. Currently Leilo weighs 85 pounds. I have been in 4-H for four years and this is my second year in market lamb. Hi. My name is Ashley Van Wyck. I am 15 years old and this is my third year in 4-H. This year I am doing a market lamb and ewe lamb project. My market lamb is a purebred Southdown and his name is Moose. He gets fed alfalfa hay, pasture, alfalfa pellets, and sheep texture. Moose is a well rounded animal and gains meat really fast. Our lot number is 132, so you can come check us out (maybe bid) at our Annual 4-H Show and Sale August
