In one case, a rancher’s “best Heifer” was struck by a truck causing extensive damage to the front end and the cow was pronounced deceased at the scene. The company vehicle only had 1,800 kilometres on it. Thankfully, the driver was not seriously injured. A charge has been laid in this case for having livestock at large which is an offence under the provincial Stray Animals Act. Please, check your fence lines and keep your animals off the road.

Highway 771. A 33 year old, a resident of Ponoka, who was working in the Rimbey area, drove his truck across the oncoming lane and launched it off a road approach in the ditch. The airborne truck rolled several times down a hill nearly ending up submerged in a lake. At the time, we reported that charges were pending the outcome of the investigation. Police have since received the results back from the lab indicating that his blood alcohol was double the legal limit and he has now been charged criminally with drunk driving. He was already a suspended driver at the time of the offence!

Facebook – pros and cons My sister and her husband came to visit on the weekend.

It was great. We sat around the kitchen table digesting family gossip along with our coffee, feeling all comfortable and good and happy with one another for no other reason than because that’s what we are.

Family!

I was just happy to have them there, in my kitchen with the huge Treena Mielke bouquet of lilies on On The Other Side my table, and a hastily made, but soon to be delicious, Saskatoon pie in my oven.

Summer is so good, I muse to myself. It’s so easy to be happy when the sun is shining and the flowers are spilling out gorgeous blooms in reckless abandon and people you love are close by.

The talk invariably turned to our kids. Huge topic. I love talking about my kids and my grandkids and it seemed a very appropriate topic as I bustled around my kitchen like a tightly wound up little Miss Suzy Homemaker.

Weirdly enough so does my sister. And her husband.

Apparently their son got a birdie on Hole No. 6 at the golf course, their daughter is on holidays and their daughter-in-law made her own dress for her son’s wedding.

“I know,” I said.

“You know?” they said in unison, looking at me questioningly. “How do you know?”

“Facebook,” I said smugly.

Now my sister and her husband are fine, upstanding citizens who have long lived by some good old-fashioned rules. Use a landline telephone if you need to share information, and if it is really important information, stop in and have a coffee and tell them the old fashioned way. Face

to face!

Facebook does fit into their lifestyle, nor do cell phones, texting and other abbreviated methods of communication.

My sister and her husband are not the only people who feel that way.

Moms and dads everywhere are grumbling that Facebook knows more about their kids than they do.

They are, understandably, annoyed.

Of couse the way to get around that is to become a Facebook junkie, too.

As for me, I’m a fence sitter, of sorts, which is safe though there is always the danger of slivers.

Facebook can be a timewaster, a springboard for gossip and a vessel full of a lot of useless information.

On the other hand, it is a social media vehicle that has taken off like wildfire.

There are very few media outlets, if any, that don’t use it.

I know there is lots of good information on Facebook. I am a firm believer that it is a quick and easy way to capsulate important news and, with the click of a mouse, send it out to a huge readership.

But there are days when it serves me in a different way.

Those are the days when I am prone to procrastination, dullness and, dare I say it, boredom.

Those are the days when my higher self hasn’t kicked in yet, and I’m looking for a little useless information, and, even will stoop so low as to find some gossip. And, of course, there is always the off chance one of my own kids has posted something.

Hence, click. There it is. Facebook.

The latest thing on Facebook seems to be a kind of chain where someone nominates someone else to post three things they are grateful for.

I like that idea a lot, and it is something I would participate in, for sure.

I truly believe gratefulness and happiness are contagious and need to be spread around as much as possible.

My grateful thing!

Two weeks of holidays. Really, I’m wildly, almost deliriously excited and I can’t think past that.

AltaLink’s vice presidents defends pending sale of company Dear Editor, Wildrose MLA Joe Anglin recently wrote a column about the pending sale of AltaLink to Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE). Mr. Anglin’s piece is strong on opinion but light on facts.

We want to be very clear. The sale to BHE will not increase the transmission charge on electricity bills for Albertans. In fact, that’s one of the critical tests of the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) process currently underway. It is the mandate of the AUC to ensure that no harm comes to ratepayers, whether by increased cost or impacts to reliability, as a result of this sale.

Under BHE ownership, there will be no loss of control over AltaLink’s transmission system. We will continue to be regulated by the AUC and the Alberta Electric System Operator will continue to operate the grid and identify new transmission projects to support our province.

The AUC isn’t the only formal review of this transaction. On July 25, Industry Canada announced its approval of the Berkshire Hathaway Energy application to purchase AltaLink. Its test

was to ensure an overall economic benefit to Canada resulting from the sale. Some of the conditions of Industry Canada’s approval included maintaining Alberta jobs at AltaLink and confirming BHEs commitment to reinvest 100 per cent of AltaLink’s earnings back into the business, in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada. And BHE, like SNC-Lavalin does today, will pay Canadian income tax on its earnings in AltaLink.

Mr. Anglin also misunderstands the difference between being a publicly owned company and a publicly regulated company. Transmission, distribution and gas pipeline utilities have always been privately owned in Alberta -- always -- while being publicly regulated. Opponents to this deal suggest a single company can effectively build and maintain our provincial electricity network, but creating monopolies has never been in step with Alberta’s entrepreneurial spirit. Alberta needs to maintain multiple transmission facility owners to encourage competition and drive down costs for consumers. It’s a formula that has served Albertans well for more than 100 years.

Mr. Anglin seems to be advocating for the conversion of Alberta’s utilities to Crown corporations so that ratepayers can share in the proceeds of the sale. However, if the value of AltaLink’s business had gone down, I’m confident he wouldn’t be asking ratepayers to pick up the difference. That’s happening in Ontario where ratepayers have paid billions of dollars during the last 15 years to pay down the debt from its Crown utilities. That’s not what Albertans want and it’s not what our province was built on. While billions of dollars of investment have been required in AltaLink to keep pace with Alberta’s exceptional growth, none of this investment has added any debt to the Government of Alberta’s balance sheet.

We’re Albertans, too. And as a utility charged with supporting Alberta’s growing economy, we will ensure the transmission system is reliable, affordable and under Albertan control. These are the facts.

Families encouraged to play it forward

By Treena Mielke A new and unique version of Play It Forward is ongoing in Rimbey and it seems to be working well.

Leanne Evans, program co-ordinator for Early Child Development Coalition in Rimbey said huge bins of toys have been placed at parks throughout town.

The bins are at Lions 1 and Lions 2 parks, Pas Ka Poo Park, The BMX Park, the soccer field playground, and in the green space in front of the Provincial Building.

Children are encouraged to play with the toys and parents who may have unused toys at home who wish to donate to the bins are welcome to do so.

“The toys are free for anybody to play with and parents are encouraged to add some of their own,” said Evans, adding the project has gone well so far.

“It seems to have gone really well and the feedback has been positive. Parents really appreciate it.”

Evans said she was concerned

that the toys may be stolen or simply disappear, but her concerns have proved to be groundless.

“I think it is a good way of teaching kids stewardship and teaching them about sharing with others in the community.”

The Early Childhood Coalition has been ongoing in Rimbey for two years, operating on a $30,000 government grant and through fundraising.

“It is a very valuable thing and helps make people aware of healthy child development, she said.

The coalition has sponsored a family fair, a calendar, encouraged family friendly business and also held a Powerful Moms and Super Dads workshop.

Attendance was low at the workshop, but the response from those in attendance was positive.

Plans are already underway for the next Powerful Moms and Super Dads workshop which will be held Feb. 28.

Mass registration fair coming

By Treena Mielke With summer days slowly winding to a close, it’s time to think about fall and winter activities and organized sports.

To help the community do this as efficiently and quickly as possible, a mass registration fair will be held Thurs., Sept. 4 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Rimbey Community Centre.

There is no formal registration needed. Community groups should come before 3 p.m. to set up their table so they are ready for business.

The public is encouraged to take

advantage of the mass registration.

“See what is offered in Rimbey and register for the programs that are out here,” said Josie Krenzler, office administrator.

Community groups, sports teams and organizations such as Rimbey Nursery School will be part of the mass registration.

The registration fair has historically been a win/win situation for both the organization and the registrants.

“We hope lots of people come,” said Krenzler.

Spray park was closed because of water ban

By Treena Mielke After several unforeseen delays which kept the spray park closed most of last year, the park at the Rimbey Aquatic Centre has become functional, and with seemingly minimal operational problems.

For several consecutive days youngsters have enjoyed the park immensely, delighting in the invigorating sprays of the water that erupts from overhanging buckets, having water fights with the revolving water guns and simply just slipping and sliding about in the cool water.

However, as luck would have it a mechanical failure occurred at one of the town’s wells. Also, a flow meter failed in one of the reservoirs.

“We were filling the tank manually with having to check it every hour or so when filling,” said public works foreman Rick Schmidt.

The problems with the well and the flow meter temporarily disrupted the town’s water supply.

“It was a double whammy,” added Schmidt.

To compensate for the disruption, a ban, meaning no outside watering and closure of the spray park, was put in place.

“There was nothing wrong with the spray park,” said CAO Lucien Cloutier. “In fact, it was operating quite well and we had some pretty happy customers.”

Cloutier is anticipating the water ban will be off by Friday. He said the part needed to repair the pump is expected today (Wednesday) and it will be installed as soon as possible.

“We should be back to full capacity,” he said.

Cloutier expects residents should be able to access full watering privileges once the system is running properly.

“We will keep a close eye on it, though,” he said.

Residents can check the town’s website to keep updated on the water ban.

A timer will be installed at the spray park later this month. The timer will need to be activated in order for the spray to be activated.

“It’s a good conservation practice,” said Cloutier.

Water from the spray park is already recycled through filters resulting in almost 100 per cent recovery.

Horticulture bench show coming up next weekend

The horticulture club operates under the umbrella of the Rimbey & District Agriculture Society.

The club offers a variety of opportunities to its members. Over the years, there have been speakers on various topics, luncheons, greenhouse and garden tours, seminars, plant swaps, information sharing, community services and education.

The club meets most months on the third Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Rimbey Drop In Centre.

Interested individuals are welcome to call Gail Hood at 403-843-2539.

Hood may also be reached at that number for more information or to obtain an entry book about the horticulture and bench show.

There are only a few days left before this year’s Rimbey & District Horticulture and Bench Show so anyone who wants to participate needs to make sure the finishing touches are completed to their exhibits.

This Friday, (August 15) entrants may drop off their exhibits at the Rimbey Drop In Centre.

Categories include cut flowers and arrangements, vegetables and fruits, knitting and thread arts (quilting, sewing, knitting, needlework), miscellaneous crafts, (baskets, wood carving, leather work, jewelry, etc).

Categories also include photography, (digital and conventional, unframed, mounted on white cardstock with one half inch border), culinary (baking, preserves, jams, jellies). Workplace injury rates hit an all-time low The latest statistics show a 20-year trend of improved workplace safety The rate of Alberta workers being hurt on the job dropped in 2013, according to information provided by the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB). In fact, the losttime claim (LTC) rate is now at an all-time recorded low.

In addition, the disabling injury rate (DIR) dropped in some of Alberta’s key sectors last year: construction; manufacturing; and oil and gas development. The DIR combines information on workers who couldn’t work because of their injury or had their duties modified due to workplace injury or disease.

Despite safety improvements, there were 188 workplace fatalities in 2013.

More than half of the fatalities resulted from occupational disease.

In some cases, the worker may have Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour been exposed to the disease decades ago.

Love of gardening nets gardener beautiful flowers and many awards Continued from page 10 Bruca works at long-term care in the Rimbey Hospital and also is a home care worker through FCSS. “I work hard,” she said, matterof-factly.

Presently her niece and her cousin live with her and she is pleased to share her home with family.

Bruca grows her flowers and vegetables from seed. Over the years she has come to learn where and when to plant and how to coax stubborn seeds into becoming healthy, prize winning plants.

She doesn’t have a greenhouse, but starts her plants in the window of her home.

“For the light,” she explains.

“I was a gardener in the Philippines as well,” she said, adding somewhat shyly that she also won prizes there for her plants and flowers.

Bruca comes by her love of gardening honestly.

“My mother just loved her flowers,” she recalled fondly. “My mother grew beautiful orchids.”

As she shows off the rows of vegetables in her garden, Bruca explains

what type they are and the conditions needed for them to realize their full potential.

Leeks need to be planted deep – the deeper the better, she said. Celery is grown inside two-litre milk cartons.

“I was at the Co-op and people were asking me how to grow celery,” she said with a chuckle.

She notices her peas are turning slightly yellow and she said that means the weather is getting colder.

Regardless, her garden looks lovely; all green and stretching the entire width and length of her back yard.

It seems as if it holds enough produce to feed a small army.

“I’ve never measured it,” she said with a grin, “but I don’t waste the land.”

Bruca said she gives much of her garden produce to her friends.

“It’s my recreation, my pastime and I share it with people; share with my friends.”

She admits her garden has never failed.

“Everything has been chopped up with hail,” she said, making a

“But it bounced back.”

Now her onions lay almost flat against the ground, a testimonial to the strong winds Rimbey and area experienced a few weeks ago.

Last year, Bruca won the Alberta Horticultural Rosette with 148 points and 68 entries at the horticultural show.

She plans to enter about 50 exhibits this year, but that number is subject to change.

“Maybe more,” she said.

In Loving Memory of Linda Fay Heagy of Rimbey, Alberta who passed away at her home on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the age of 66 years.

Linda was raised in Rockglen, Saskatchewan where she met the love of her life, Marvin. Marvin and Linda were married in 1968 and blessed with three children, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild. The family relocated several times following Marvin’s oilfield career. In 1980, the family moved to Rimbey making it “home”. While in Rimbey, Linda loved sharing her energy and sense of humour with the elderly when employed at the Parkland Manor, and later at the Rimbey Hospital. Linda had a kind heart and was always willing to help others. She very much enjoyed the sports of curling and golf, and over the years took lead roles in sharing her passion by teaching youth the games as well. There was always some good name-calling when friends and family got together for a good ‘ol card game. Linda was passionate about many things... the Riders, and grandchildren first and foremost. She was always a tremendous help by being an extra parent... never hesitating to help drive her grandchildren to school, a sports game, or even a party.

Linda was the ‘hostess with the mostest’. She didn’t drink or eat much herself, but she always kept everyone watered and fed.

Linda will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of 46 years, Marvin; her three children, David Heagy of Drayton Valley; Sherri (Rod) Ryckman of Red Deer; and Brent (Naomi) Heagy of Fort McMurray; as well as six cherished grandchildren: Anesea (Ryan), Lindsey, Taryn, Faith, Quinn, and Brodie; and one treasured great grandson, Weston. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her brother, Selmar (Elaine) Gullickson of Surrey, B.C.; special cousin, Don (Carol) Anderson of Regina, Saskatchewan; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. Linda was predeceased by Elizabeth “Liz” Nelson and Robert “Bob” Tiefenbach; and her brother, Buzzy Gullickson.

With respect for Linda’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A Casual Celebration of Linda’s Life will be held at the family farm on Saturday, August 23, 2014 beginning at 4:00 p.m. In recognition of Linda’s favourite colour, please wear green.

Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Linda’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Curling Club ~ Jr. Program, Box 768, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0.
