Even more fire fighters arrive in B.C. Submitted
As wildfire activity continues to increase throughout the province, the Wildfire Management Branch will welcome over 220 additional fire personnel on Friday and Saturday. One 19-person Incident Management Team, 40 sustained action firefighters and about 30 support staff from Ontario arrived in Kelowna on Friday, Aug. 8. “The high number of active wildfires in the province is stretching our firefighting resources. In addition to the support we have already received from other Canadian provinces and territories, we are grateful for the assistance we will be receiving from the Australian State of Victoria,” said Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson. Update from page 4
in the backcountry. All person-caused fires are preventable and these incidents may affect the ability of the firefighting crews to respond to naturally occurring fires. The fire danger rating in the majority of the Southeast Fire Centre is currently “high”, with large areas of “extreme” fire danger in the East Kootenay, West Kootenay, Revelstoke and Boundary regions. Considering the hot and dry weather experienced over the past few weeks, these conditions mean that forest fuels are very dry and the risk of fire is serious. On Tuesday, Aug. 5, a campfire prohibition went into effect throughout the entire fire centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. For updated information on the Slocan Park Fire Evacuation Alert, please visit: http://www. rdck.ca/ For more information on the Whiteswan Lake Provincial park closure, please visit: http://www. env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/ explore/parkpgs/ whtswan/ To report a wildfire, call 1 800 663-5555 tollfree or *5555 on a cellphone.
Forty sustained action firefighters and three support staff from Quebec will arrive in Prince George on Saturday, Aug. 9, plus another 80 sustained action firefighters and about 10 more support staff from Ontario. These resources join more than 1,600 provincial staff, over 930 B.C. contractors and about 100 out-ofprovince personnel already engaged in fire response efforts. The incoming personnel are in addition to about 80 specialized wildfire personnel from Australia who are scheduled to arrive in Vancouver in several groups from Saturday, Aug. 9 through Monday, Aug. 11. The requests for outside assistance were made through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, which co-ordinates the mutual sharing of firefighting resourc-
es between B.C. and other Canadian jurisdictions. Costs associated with these requests will be covered by B.C. under the Mutual Aid Resources Sharing Agreement, which allows for the movement of firefighting resources throughout Canada. Hot and dry weather conditions have elevated the fire danger rating throughout British Columbia and many areas of the province are currently experiencing a “high” to “extreme” fire danger rating. The hot and dry conditions are expected to last for at least the next two weeks. The Wildfire Management Branch has responded to 1,036 wildfires so far this season, and most of those fires were caused by lightning. They serve as a reminder that as lightning activity within the province increas-
es, extra caution is needed to prevent person-caused wildfires. Each personcaused fire diverts critical resources away from lightningcaused fires. Campfire prohibitions are in effect in many areas of the province. For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, visit: http:// www.bcwildfire.ca Quick facts: * Fire danger ratings are based on readings from over 200 weather stations throughout the province. * An “extreme” fire danger rating indicates that forest fuels are extremely dry and the fire risk is very serious. New fires will start easily, spread rapidly and make fire suppression efforts challenging.

La Dolce Vita: In rhythm with the seasons by Lorne Eckersley
When we attended our first ever summer solstice celebration at Summerhill Pyramid Winery in June we really had no idea what to expect. The first part wasn’t much of a surprise—yoga-based talk and movement in the cool, subtly lit pyramid. Next up was a potluck supper that we passed on, because being five hours from home we weren’t in a position to prepare anything and didn’t want to show up empty-handed. So we dined in the Sunset Organic Bistro, then headed down to the kekuli, a pit house constructed with the help of local First Nations people. Deceptively spacious inside, the kekuli is a dome-shaped construction of logs that is covered with soil that provides the base for a now thick covering of indigenous plants. A blanketcovered entrance gives way to a circular meeting space and a roaring fire in the centre of the room vented through a hole in the ceiling. We took our seats and were soon caught up in the beat of dozen or so drums of all sorts, the rhythmic pounding feeling very organic and pleasurable. Suddenly our attention was drawn toward the fire, where two men were crouched, reaching toward the flames. I stood and shifted my position to get a better look and it became evident that they were inverting empty onelitre sealer jars to capture smoke from the fire. Lids were quickly screwed on while the jars were held upsidedown and then the men returned to a table near the building’s sidewall. Again I moved to improve my vantage point

and witnessed each jar of smoke being quickly and carefully filled with a clear liquid before being resealed. Welcome to the world of modern mixology, Gerry Jobe style. Eventually, I learned that Jobe was creating a mixed drinks program for the Bistro, Summerhill recently having been granted a full liquor license. Back to the smokefilled jars. The liquid poured into them was a simple syrup (watersugar mixture) that was infused with chokecherry blossoms from the Summerhill property. The filled jars were placed in a semi-circle around the fire and then a Reiki practitioner used her hands to energize the jars while Jobe held a crystal wand over them. “In my life, I’ve had a big change and am suddenly surrounded by energy workers, philosophers, alternative spirituality,” Jobe says. “I realized that it’s time for me to learn that language and immerse myself in the study and practice of energy, and integrate this healing and knowledge into my life. I’ve been exposed to all these new ingredients and the effect they have on the body and on mood. Story has always been a big part of my cocktails, but now energy and spirituality are part of that story. Summerhill is a playground, allowing me to deepen my art. We are using ingredients like wildcrafted medicinal herbs and organic wines, and techniques like aging syrups in the pyramid, Tibetan singing bowls, intentionality and biodynamic rhythms. I don’t want to be a ‘mad scientist’ anymore. I want to be a warlock, working with nature

and energy.” On a recent return visit to Summerhill I ordered a cocktail, Lithia’s Rhythm, before dinner. Jobe’s description: “Foraged chokecherry blossoms were reduced in a simple syrup then smoked over the fire during the summer solstice drum circle in the kekuli. Placed around the kekuli fire, vessels of this reduction were influenced by the rhythm of drumming and dancing, and treated with energy work and quartz. We combine this reduction with our organic Pinot Gris, lemon and Woodford Reserve Bourbon to offer you this experience of the summer solstice in a refreshing cocktail. Named after Lithia, the goddess of the summer solstice.” It was exactly as advertised. Refreshing. But I was surprised to truly enjoy the combination that included wine and bourbon. Nothing about it seemed forced or meant to show off. Subtle and satisfying is how I would describe it. Several other original cocktails are joined on the new menu by Jobe’s reinterpretations of classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned (Soul Fashioned), Negroni (Merloni) and Boulevardier (Hillavardier). When I set foot on the property at Summerhill Pyramid Winery I am never disappointed, and most often surprised. The new drinks menu continues that trend. The last word goes to Jobe: “This is the start of a journey. I want to celebrate the land and the history and create something beautiful.”

Letter: Not happy with land application A recent subdivision application in the Ha Ha Creek valley has proved an eye opener for area residents. The subdivision was approved despite: • being much smaller than the community norm; • in a dangerous location transportation wise; • the lots being split by a homeowners road; • being in the ALR; • putting additional pressure on the existing infrastructure and; • potentially changing the composition and character of the valley. The startling aspects were that no home owners were contacted prior to the subdivision application being approved, that this notification is not required and that none of the concerns this subdivision created were considered. Our area representative has said that the committee that approved the subdivision is relying on the
Chuck Bennett PUBLisHEr
Agricultural Land Commission and the Department of Transportation to look into these and other issues when the application makes its way to them. Effectively, the committee is abdicating its responsibility to area residents and is only considering the the desires of the subdividing land owner. The effect of this is further magnified as there is no mechanism for community input at any of these levels and there is no mechanism of accountability at two of the three levels. Granted, our zone representative could be voted out but that is only long after the damage is done. The other two departments are in no way accountable for any decision made. There is also no mechanism for any of the decisions to be appealed by the community. In a time when increased transparency
Brian Coombs Editor
Shannon Stewart CirCULAtioN
and accountability is demanded, this is not acceptable. The regional district planning department which advises the committee has not, according the the zone representative, taken into account these issues nor has it looked at the cumulative effect of the changes during the past several years. For example, the three mile road this subdivision is on had five homes on it a relatively short time ago. Now, potentially, 21 families can be located on it and that is just the subdivisions that are approved, not the ones that are hoped for. This puts increased pressure on the roads, adds to wildfire risk, further changes the valley from agricultural to bedroom community in makeup, creates an increasingly dangerous situation where Ha Ha Creek road joins Highway 3 and more all without community input or representation by our representatives. Even the zoning process which has been started for the area

does not address the fundamental concerns of input on decisions that directly affect a person’s largest investment, their home. To exacerbate the problem, none of this seemed to concern our zone representative enough for him to recommend changes in procedures, bylaws, the way the planning department works or the way input from a community is gathered. He recognized the potential hidden costs, the future costs, the cumulative effect and a host of other problems. This was not enough to have him be willing to advocate for change. It would be easy to point a finger at our zone representative and lay the blame at his feet. However, this is a systemic problem within a flawed system and all representatives must share the blame because the same problem exists throughout the East Kootenays and all representatives are, at the least, tacitly supporting it. ~Don Flowers

EKFH’s Starlite Campaign surprises Sparwood with $3,000 cart Submitted
Not often does a surprise come off without a hitch but this one certainly did. Recently East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s Brian Clifford (Chair) and Donna Grainger (Executive Director) were hosted with a tour of the Sparwood Health Centre by Interior Health’s Janice Talarico, Manager, Community Integration Health Services Fernie, Sparwood & Elkford. While on the tour many departments had a chance to talk with EKFH about its mission to provide funding for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and other community facilities in complementing the health care needs of the region. It was during this tour that one of the nurses in the emergency department made mention that
they hoped that one day their department could approach EKFH about the possibility of getting a pediatric crash cart for the unit. Unbeknownst to the nurse her wish did not go unheard. Between Janice, Brian and Donna a plan was put in place to purchase the cart. With the approval and paperwork processed, Janice gathered the team to meet in her office to join in on a conference call that the group thought was an EKFH thank you for the tour. Instead the group was told that because of being able to see firsthand the passion and enthusiasm the team had for giving the best care possible, EKFH was able to grant the wish of a pediatric cart thanks to the generosity of donors who supported EKFH’s 2013 Starlite Campaign. The Sparwood Emergency Department
would like to thank the East Kootenay Foundation for Health for its generous gift. The cart will help the Sparwood Emergency Department staff tremendously when providing life supporting care to children in critical situations. The cart will allow all pediatric emergent care supplies to be easily located and organized. Staff will be able to access required supplies quickly and efficiently. Pediatric emergencies require specialized care and the pediatric emergency crash cart will greatly support staff when providing emergent care to children. The 2014 Starlite Campaign focusing on regional health care needs will launch again at the end of November; to make a donation to an area of care or facility in your community visit the secured website www.ekfh.ca.

Help is a phone call away Submitted Six months into the new Surveillance Nurse program within Interior Health, remote telephone checks are having a positive influence and helping independent seniors stay at home longer. “This program is a great example of a simple idea that has a big impact,” said Sharon Whitby, Home Health Practice Lead for Interior Health. “The Surveillance Nurses help clients remain in their own homes and avoid hospital admissions. These are great achievements for both clients and the health care system. We know most people prefer to stay in their own home to self-manage when they are able.” The focus is on stable long-term Home Health clients. Surveillance Nurses phone them to see how they are doing at least once every three months and more if required. Clients may also call the nurse when they have questions or need assistance. The program’s goal is to identify any issues as soon as possible, to help ensure these independent clients continue to do well living at home. “The regular calls
ensure we are being proactive and supporting clients so they continue to be lower needs for as long as possible,” said Whitby. “For example they may need encouragement to increase their activity level, to socialize more, or to quit smoking. Or they may benefit from other support services,” said Whitby. Surveillance Nurses are currently located in: Williams Lake; Kamloops; Vernon; Kelowna; Penticton; Cranbrook; and Castlegar. They support approximately 280 clients. As the program grows, they will continue to expand their reach across the health authority. “The first phone call is usually the most crucial. It’s quite amazing how quickly we can develop a rapport with our clients over the phone,” said Tina Pole, one of the seven Surveillance Nurses. “We are able to find out what supports they have from family or friends and how they are going to be able to maintain or improve their health.” “In the beginning I didn’t really know how this would work,” said Pole. “Now that I’ve been doing this for a few months, I feel I am
making a difference in their lives. Some clients don’t need me as much as another client might, but they really appreciate when I connect with them over the phone. Just knowing someone is checking in on them and is interested in their health makes them feel safe at home.”
The City recently erected signs renaming “312th Street” to “Jim Ogilvie Way”, to honour long-serving former Mayor James E. Ogilvie. Known as “Jim” to most, Jim made an immense contribution to the people of Kimberley over six decades and 46 years in local politics. “He loves this community and it is the least we can do to recognize his service and dedication,” said Mayor Ron McRae. “The road connects Marysville and Kimberley, which is appropriate for Jim.” Mr. Ogilvie first served as Commissioner for the Village of Marysville in 1965 and then as Alderman during the 1968 amalgamation of the City of Kimberley with the villages of Chapman Camp and Marysville. Mr. Ogilvie was instrumental in the transition period of Marysville and Kimberley during the amalgamation and continued the journey toward economic independence and continued prosperity for Kimberley. In 1972, Jim successfully ran for Mayor of Kimberley. With a break of only three years, Jim Ogilvie served the City of Kimberley for an impressive period of 36 years as Mayor. During these years, the City flourished with his guidance including the

An Escalade worth the wait Cadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically the heart of Yorkville. This upscale slice of Toronto real estate is home to spendy shops, exclusive restaurants and luxurious hotels. This is a place to be seen or be seen in a vehicle that projects the image one wants to portray. Media guests for the Escalade launch stayed at Toronto’s very first boutique hotel, The Hazelton. A forest firefighter’s truck of choice ily read and accessible. There are 12-volt outlets everywhere, two in the dash, one in the centre console, one in the back of that console, right beside the newly added 110V/150W power inverter and there’s a supply located in the rear under seat storage bin on the driver’s side.
The front seats I found very comfortable and perfect for a long day at work. The rear seating positions were also very comfortable with lots of legroom. Noise levels in the cab, or lack thereof was amazing. This is must be the quietest diesel on the planet. It runs
as quietly as a gasoline vehicle. You can easily hold conversations in the cab at any speed with no interference from outside sources. It was also a treat to be able to order from a drive thru window without having to shut the truck off! Remember, when travelling

There is a variety of vehicles in the firefighter fleet but lately they have been using the Ford Super-Duty as the prime support vehicle. The new 2015 version is powerful enough to haul heavy trailers and large enough to double as a mobile office. The 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8, with higher power ratings for 2015, coupled with a 6R140 heavy duty Torqshift six-speed automatic transmission delivers improved torque, horsepower and fuel economy. The engine pumps out a whopping 860 ft.lb of torque at 1,600 rpm and 440 horsepower at 2,800 rpm. It has lots of get up and go. Ease your way into the throttle and before you know it, you are at highway speeds. Power and acceleration are
smooth and effortless. When properly equipped the Super Duty has a maximum tow rating of 14,152 kg (31,200 lbs) and a total payload of up to 3,293 kg (7,260 lbs) The interior is very functional. The available LCD productivity screen keeps you up to date with vital information, for example fuel economy numbers, towing, off-road information and voice command navigation. A rapid heat supplemental cab heater is available for those cold days that you need interior heat quickly. Yet another version of the popular Mini is out and selling for around $120. What? – Well, it is a LEGO brick replica of the original Cooper Mk VII, produced between August 1997 and July 1998. That was the last generation of the original very mini-Mini, which was soon replaced by the Mini on steroids that BMW now produces very profitably. Interestingly, the price tag for the beautifully crafted “toy” is about the same as I paid for my used 1966 Mini Countryman Mark II back in
say the thought of putting together 1,077-parts is somewhat daunting. Perhaps no more so than my old banger after a breakdown. A girlfriend at the time always wondered why it would quit in the darkest back lanes. Which reminds me, the LEGO car accessories includes a picnic basket, bottle and blanket . . . I had a blanket in the back of mine but it wasn’t for picnic use. Ah, those fond memories will come flooding back if Santa does his job this year.

1974. The LEGO version bears many authentic details, from the classic green and white color scheme with white wing mirrors and racing stripes. When I got mine, it had authentic woodworm in the bits that made it look like a mini Brit version of the Woodies that were so popular on this side of the Atlantic at the time. Dad suggested we strip out the wood but the garage guy thought the whole darn thing might fall apart if we did. Oh, brother! My dad, as a model plane painter of some repute, bought a few cans of paint and carefully painted the wood black. Then he hand painted the rest of the body blue. Couldn’t see a brush stroke when he had finished. The model has doors, hood and trunk that open – more than you could say for mine on many occasions. Sporty fog lights are featured as well as a detailed four-cylinder engine – transversely mounted, of course. There’s also separate spare tire compartment. Had one of those to house a spare that was as bald as I am now. You can even remove the roof to access a tan colored interior with patterned seats, veneer-style dashboard, turning steering wheel, and moving gearshift and handbrake. I had a hole in my roof at one point but the only thing that came through it was rain, by the bucketful. This Cooper model mea-

Alexandra Straub By Alexandra Straub
Austin, TX – The thermostat is flying north of 30 degrees
Celsius, but luckily, there’s a bit of a breeze. Thousands of individuals have gathered at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) track despite the heat. COTA is a 1,500-acre-plus sports and entertainment venue located just 20 minutes from downtown Austin. It’s where the Summer X Games are calling their new home until 2017. The extreme sports (hence the X) competition previously took place in Los Angeles and hosts events like Moto X Freestyle, skateboarding, BMX and more. I’m here mainly for the motorcycles this day but I’m up for it all! To beat that heat, what used to be a decorative fountain or centerpiece for the venue is now a cool-down hotspot. People are splashing around in this sizeable, converted “swimming pool” while security guards idly stand by and make sure no one gets too crazy. Aside from long lineups for
cold beverages and minimal spots out of the sun, the “pool” is an ideal place to ward off heatstroke. However, you won’t catch me inside! I’m almost 100 percent sure it’s not chlorinated, or cleaned. Nor do I have a change of clothes. In between events, the people watching is at a premium. I could sit at any given spot and be thoroughly entertained at the cross section of society that walked through the gates. The crowd, unlike many other sporting events, is younger. It’s comprised mainly of Gen Xers and Ys. But there’s room for everyone. As dictated by this year’s fashionable trends, girls wear shorts that barely cover their bottoms, and the guys don’t seem to oppose it. Those of legal drinking age cherish their ice-cold beer and drink it like it’s their last. Though they have one more in their other hand. They’re not about to wait another half
hour for more. Sitting in the bleachers, that aforementioned breeze
is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it feels
so good against the skin. But a curse because if the wind is blowing faster than 25 mph (or around that speed), the athletes can’t compete in the Moto X Freestyle; an event I’ve been dying to see. I patiently wait for updates on the grandstand screens. After all, I’ve been watching these games on TV for as long as I can remember. The tricks that the athletes do, regardless of medium, are nothing short of spectacular. The Big Air contest for the BMXers call upon riders to drop into a massive roll, then jump from a kicker to catapult themselves into a quarter-pipe. While doing that, they execute tricks, and try to wow the crowds. And. of course. go home with a gold medal. I’m all about doing crazy things on wheels but this is more than crazy. It’s just magical. I wish I had the guts to do this kind of thing. I think my mom is glad I don’t. Eagerly anticipating the show, the wind refuses to settle. But the riders come out and do a few tricks to test out if they’re able to compete. Yay! Since they literally fly through the air, upwards of 50 feet (give or take), their bodies and mo-
torcycles act as a sail and they can easily be pushed outside of their landing zone. It’s dangerous and a huge safety risk. The event is postponed. No. Yes, then cancelled. The athletes who travel from all across the world are probably even more disappointed that they can’t ride, says the commentator. It’s probably true. They want to show off their skills. We want to cheer for their efforts. Add me to that list of the officially bummed out. Well, what can you do? The crowd’s energy is contagious, nonetheless. There’s no doubt that it’s a fun event to attend, even if the event you’re so excited to see doesn’t happen, and you’ll be on a plane the next morning before it all starts up again. But like a lot of major sporting events, sometimes, the best place to see all the action is in the comfort of your own home. Where you don’t have to wait half an hour for a cold one. And a breeze is always welcome. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Some of the basics involved in Saddle Bronc riding at the rodeo
PHOTO HALEY BANMAN
Saddle Bronc riding is one of the oldest events in the rodeo circuit. Courtesy 101 Wild West Rodeo Saddle Bronc Riding is rodeo’s classic event, and is judged similarly to bareback bronc riding but there are additional possibilities to being disqualified; that is, losing a stirrup or dropping the thickly braided rein that is attached to the horse’s halter. The cowboy sits on the horse differently due to the saddle and rein, and the spurring motion covers a different area of the
horse. Saddle broncs are usually several hundred pounds heavier than bareback horses and generally buck in a slower manner. This event is both a complement and contrast to the wilder spectacles of bareback riding and bull riding. This event requires strength to be sure, but the event also demands style, grace and precise timing. Saddle bronc riding evolved from the task of breaking and training
horses to work the cattle ranches of the Old West. Many cowboys claim riding saddle broncs is the toughest rodeo event to master because of the technical skills necessary for success. Every move the bronc rider makes must be synchronized with the movement of the horse. The cowboy’s objective is a fluid ride, somewhat in contrast to the wilder and less-controlled rides of bareback riders. One of the similarities shared by saddle

bronc and bareback riding is the rule that riders in both events must mark out their horses on the first jump from the chute. To properly mark out his horse, the saddle bronc rider must have both heels touching the animal above the point of its shoulders when it makes its first jump from the chute. If the rider misses his mark, he receives no score. While a bareback rider has a rigging to hold onto, the saddle bronc rider has only a thick rein attached to his horse’s halter. Using one hand, the cowboy tries to stay securely seated in
his saddle. If he touches any part of the horse or his own body with his free hand, he is disqualified. Judges score the horse’s bucking action, the cowboy’s control of the horse and the cowboy’s spurring action. While striving to keep his toes turned outward, the rider spurs from the points of the horse’s shoulders to the back of the saddle. To score well, the rider must maintain that action throughout the eightsecond ride. While the bucking ability of the horse is quite naturally built into the scoring
