Public School Employers’ Association has some “new concepts” to bring to the discussion. “We’ve already demonstrated our willingness to move on some key elements,” he said. “We need to see the same from the BCTF. They’ve indicated they’re willing to do that.” He wouldn’t comment on the new proposals, except to reiterate that the BCTF’s

position on benefits and other compensation is not in the “affordability zone” established by other public sector union agreements. If the strike shuts schools again in September, the government plans to use the savings to compensate parents $40 a day for each child under 13 in public school, to assist with daycare or tutoring costs. Fassbender said there would be no conditions attached to the payout. “My hope is that there isn’t a nickel avail-

School Trustees’ Association has urged the government to direct its $12 million a day in payroll savings from the strike to a fund to address class size and special needs support. Trustees have also called on the union to moderate its benefit demands, which include parental leave, dental benefits, massage therapy and increased preparation time for elementary school teachers. BCPSEA has offered $375 million over a six-year contract term to provide extra classroom support, and specified class size limits in the teacher contract, to address key issues in a series of court disputes.

On July 31, the Ministry of Advanced Education announced $164,000 in additional funding for College of the Rockies foundation and apprenticeship welding programs. On August 1, East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett stopped by the College’s welding shop with College President and CEO David Walls to see where the funds will be utilized. An additional 16 welder foundation seats and 16 welder apprenticeship seats will be made available as a result of the new funding.

With the dry summer weather, wildfire season is again upon us. British Columbia’s Wildfire Management Branch typically responds to 2,000 fires each year. In 10 years, costs have ranged from a low of $47 million in 2006 to a high of $382 million in 2010. The province has four “Fire Boss” amphibious scoopers that drop water, foam and retardant on a fire. One Fire Boss can scoop up over 3,000 litres of water in under 15 seconds, and be back on its way to the fire in under 30 seconds, buying time for ground crews to begin containing it. Cranbrook is home to one of BC’s Airtanker bases. Since 2006, this base along with the bases in Penticton, Kamloops, and Williams Lake have been upgraded at a cost of more than $9 million.

Summertime and the drinking is easy B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher The B.C. government’s move to ease liquor restrictions is undergoing its hot summer test, and music festivals are only part of it. Premier Christy Clark’s government loves its populist gestures, and as with increasing rural highway speed limits, the negative effects have yet to be quantified. Free-range drinking, or removing fences from festival beer gardens, is one

of the moves that will be undergoing a postmortem as communities clean up after their big summer parties. One of the biggest, the Squamish Valley Music Festival with headline acts Arcade Fire, Bruno Mars and Eminem, is still to come, Aug. 8 to 10. Country fans gathered over the long weekend for Sunfest in the Cowichan Valley, with the Rockin’ River Musicfest in Mission coming up next. (Another big bash this weekend is Shambhala, the popular electronic

music event on a farm near Nelson, but alcohol is officially banned there and their big issue is controlling the effects of “ecstasy” and other rave drugs.) Early reviews of free-range festivals have been positive. Victoria’s Rock the Shores event went smoothly without a fenced-in area for alcohol sales. Festival organizers did create a fenced “dry” area, but I’m told hardly anyone used it. Penticton has had its share of experience with summer bashes gone bad. For B.C. Day it inherited the Boonstock Music and Arts festival, sent packing from a small community in Alberta after

complaints of rowdy crowds and crime, so Penticton officials were understandably cautious. Boonstock organizers were refused a provincial liquor licence after struggling to arrange security and emergency services. The festival licence process is likely getting renewed attention these days. After attending the recent Calgary Folk Festival, where the beer garden was securely fenced and the capacity monitored, I’m wondering what is really achieved by these measures. Litter and empties were contained, but since underaged festival visitors are allowed into the serving area, it’s not

clear to me whether the fence was ever worth the effort. It’s unlikely that there will be riots at farm markets as a result of allowing sales of locally made beer, wine and spirits, or from relaxing rules for operation of winery tasting rooms. But there are more reforms to come. New regulations are on the way for the Agricultural Land Reserve. As it stands, farms are allowed to have a winery or cidery, but not a brewery or distillery. Expect that to be changed as B.C. and other provinces strive to develop their craft beer and spirits industry, trying to emulate the tourism benefits that have come

from an expanding wine industry. One area where the B.C. government has screwed up is its minimum pricing rules, introduced along with the overdue move to allow “happy hour” discounts in pubs. The minimum price of 25 cents an ounce for beer, 60 cents an ounce for wine and $3 an ounce for hard liquor was an effort to balance business-friendly policy with legitimate public health concern about over-consumption. But the minimum beer price prompted protests from a few watering holes that had been selling pints or jugs of beer for slightly less. Some media made

a big deal of this, and the government overreacted to this tempest in a beer stein with an ill-thought-out cut in the minimum price to 20 cents an ounce – for beer in jugs only. The pub industry was not impressed with this bit of knee-jerk populism. Encouraging beer jug sales makes it difficult to see if someone at a table of revelers is being over-served, drinking most of the jug himself. The Canadian Cancer Society would like to congratulate Sue Huisman on winning an iPad mini as part of the 2014 Relay For Life registration incentives. She was a participant in the Elk Valley Relay For Life on the Elkford Secondary School team. Sue took part in the 2014 Elk Valley Relay this year in honor or her friend and survivor Nancy Buchan. Here is Sue’s story: My Friend in the picture is the reason I walked this year. Her name is Nancy Buchan and she was diagnosed with colon cancer June 20th last year and underwent surgery the next day, the day of her oldest daughters graduation prom. Well obviously for Nancy but it was more than that. We both were going through a tough time at the same time as my dad had gotten sick that same weekend and after 5 weeks in Cranbrook hospital he died of pneumonia. Although she was recovering from her own surgery she texted me every day to see how things were going. When she started her treatments she allowed me in her trusted circle of drivers. She is my best buddy and I would do anything for her. The Elkford Secondary School team? This was their fourth time in the Relay, my first with them but certainly not my last. Government spending on wildfires could reach $250 million By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government is spending $3.5 million a day to fight forest fires around the province, with the total for the year past $106 million and headed higher. The government is bracing for bills that could reach $250 million by the end of the summer, depending on weather and the number of fires that threaten homes. B.C. has brought in firefighters from Ontario, Alberta and New Brunswick, and issued several evacuation orders by the mid-point of the summer season. Finance Minister Mike de Jong asked for B.C. residents to take all possible precautions and observe

campfire bans through August. About 40 per cent of B.C. forest fires are human caused, with most of the rest started by lightning strikes. Forest fire spending is already approaching totals for the last two years. Highs in the past decade are $382 million in 2009 and $371 million in 2003, when fires damaged Kelowna and Barriere. “The possibility of the fire season consuming a quarter billion tax dollars is real,” de Jong said. “Whilst there is no issue about spending the money, it has to come from somewhere, so that’s a cost item that’s looking like it will be considerably more than what had been hoped for.”

Work proceeds on EKRH A new intensive care unit for patients across the region is starting to take shape at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook. The installation of the building substructure is well underway and proceeding on schedule. All footings for the new structure are now complete and the base walls are approximately 30 per cent complete. The majority of underground drainage and sewer connections are also now in place. The basement floor is scheduled to be completed in August, and the ground floor and roof structures will be done in the fall. In September, work will begin on installing temporary generators and utility feeds for the electrical upgrades that are part of these major improvements to the regional hospital. New permanent generators will arrive in December. Work will continue on site from approximately 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

throughout the summer. There will be periodic interruptions to normal traffic patterns during construction. Interior Health is working with the contractor to minimize these impacts and appreciates the ongoing patience of local residents and visitors to the hospital as these major improvements to our regional facility move forward. Project Background: The estimated total project cost is $20 million. The Province is funding $11.93 million, the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District is contributing $7.95 million, and the East Kootenay Foundation for Health is contributing $120,000. The new ICU unit will replace the current fourbed unit and feature two additional highacuity beds, which will help relieve pressure on the intensive care unit. The integrated design includes a 787 squaremetre (approximately 8,470 square-feet)

addition on the northeast side of the existing hospital. The size and design of the new ICU will provide better flow through the unit for physicians and staff, as well as providing additional privacy. The enhanced care environment for patients will feature integrated family spaces and maximized natural light. The project also includes a significant electrical upgrade at the facility. The new electrical system will improve the power supply to the entire hospital, optimize the electrical system performance and allow capacity to expand for future power needs. The electrical infrastructure will be located in the basement of the new addition. Lark Projects Ltd. is the contractor overseeing the project, with full project completion anticipated for mid2016.

Province brings in more personnel, equipment for wildfires Submitted

Due to an elevated wildfire risk in British Columbia, the Wildfire Management Branch has requested the assistance of over 70 additional out-of-province personnel to aid in fire suppression efforts. Hot and dry weather conditions have elevated fire danger ratings throughout the province, and many areas of B.C. are currently experiencing “high” and “extreme” ratings. Because dry forest fuels are very susceptible to ignition and

lightning is expected in the northeast and interior regions of the province over the long weekend, firefighting crews are on standby in all six of B.C.’s fire centres in preparation for increased fire starts. Personnel from Ontario and Quebec will be arriving in B.C. over the next week. They will include firefighters, an Incident Management Team and support staff, and they will be deployed throughout the province based on current and anticipated wildfire activity.

The Province has also increased its airtanker capacity. An Electra L-188 airtanker has been brought in on a short-term contract and is currently stationed in Penticton. It will be deployed on fires as needed. An airtanker group from Alberta, consisting of four CL-215T amphibious skimmers, one bird dog aircraft and an Air Attack Officer, will arrive in Prince George on Monday. These resources join more than 1,400 provincial staff, nearly 660 B.C. contractors, over

500 out-of-province personnel and eight airtanker groups that are already engaged in fire-response efforts in British Columbia. The requests for additional assistance were made through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, which co-ordinates the mutual sharing of firefighting resources between B.C. and other Canadian jurisdictions. Costs associated with these requests will be covered by B.C. under the Mutual Aid Resources Sharing Agreement, which Photo suBMitted

allows for the movement of firefighting resources throughout Canada. The Wildfire Management Branch has responded to 812 wildfires so far this season. There are currently 12 active fires of note burning within the boundaries of the Prince George, Kamloops, Southeast and Northwest fire centres. Most of these fires of note were caused by lightning. They serve as a reminder that, as lightning activity within the province increases, extra caution is needed to prevent person-caused wildfires. Each person-caused fire diverts critical firefighting resources away from naturally occurring fires.

Open burning prohibitions are currently in place for many areas of the province. Are you aware that there are restrictions on other fresh fruits and vegetables coming from California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington? And did you know that all food, plant and animal products must be free from soil, pests, leaves, branches and/or plant debris before they are allowed into Canada? CBSA’s best advice: • Always declare everything to a border services officer when crossing into Canada. It’s the only way to be sure. • Travellers are also encouraged to research the import requirements for food, plant and animal products by visiting the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s website. • Be aware that restrictions can vary by province, and that requirements are constantly updated due to changing pest and disease situations.

Bugaboos Teens reaches amazing heights by Pat Morrow On July 25, the 6th Annual “Bugaboos Teens” climbing program, organized by the Conrad Kain Centennial Society, got off to an auspicious start. The 10 high school kids from Invermere, Kimberley and Cranbrook got to meet local mountain guiding legend Leo Grillmair, as they were getting outfitted at Canadian Mountain Holiday’s Bugaboo Lodge with climbing helmets, ice axes and crampons. Leo and CMH founder Hans Gmoser built the lodge in 1968, and in the intervening years Leo has introduced countless enthusiasts (including Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau) to the secrets of the world famous granite spires. After posing for a group photo, he bade them good luck with his full-bodied Austrian accent and the group began the 2-hour hike up the trail to the Conrad Kain Hut. The “Bugs” are a world-class climbing destination, and our objective was Houndstooth Spire. Sprouting from the middle of Bugaboo glacier, part of the challenge of reaching the summit is to negotiate the crevasses, visible and hidden, on the way to the rock and ice climbing on its north slopes. In order to get the team safely to and from the mountain and to give the participants rudimentary climbing instruction, Association of Canadian Mountain Guides Kirk Mauthner, Jen Olson and Tim McAllister joined us again this year. Mt Baker High School Outdoor Ed teacher Leigh Cormier, BC Parks area supervisor

Brett Yeates, mountain writer Lynn Martel and I rounded out the crew. During a rest stop, Brett gave an informative talk about BC Parks and career opportunities in the field of Outdoor Rec, Parks and Tourism in BC, which was convincing enough to recruit some new supporters of wild beautiful places in our province. The day was perfect and everyone celebrated the spectacular summit view, 1600 vertical meters off the valley floor. The next day, we climbed 2728 m Eastpost Spire. The trail passes by Canada’s most spectacular campsite called Applebee Dome, where among the 30 or more tents, we met two hard core alpine rock climbers, Will Stanhope from Squamish, BC and Matt Segal from Colorado. For the past three summers, the two have been trying to forge a new route on Snowpatch Spire’s east face and they light heartedly told the awestruck teens stories that reflected the commitment it takes to get there and the importance of following your dreams. Afterward, Jake Harach, from Mount Baker High School, was sufficiently inspired to write: “This trip changed the way I see mountaineering, and inspired me to get out there and experience all the amazing places that are right in our own backyard. I would hope to hear about the program’s continued success in years to come.” Selkirk High School student Joy Johnson echoed his sentiments: “Experiencing the Bugaboo Teen Camp was absolutely amazing. This trip has inspired

Tyra Joe, one of the Wildsight Look Outside contest winners, took this picture on the Bugaboos Teens outing. me to continue with my exploration of Canada’s amazing environments.” I received this equally rewarding email from a parent: “I just wanted to let you know what a profound impact these last few days have had on my daughter. Since returning from the Bugaboos, she has been showing me her images of the experience and telling me all about it (she is usually pretty quiet). Judging by her descriptions of the experience I would have to say this has had a very large impact on her. She is all smiles and still beaming! A question I believe I’m sensing from her is what’s next? (That is music to my ears...scary, as a parent...but still music to the ears)” My answer: in order to hone the skills neces-

sary for safe travel and exploration in the high mountains, there’s no substitute for climbing, hiking and skiing a lot in the back country, and this can be done with with friends and family. To learn the technical skills of climbing and rope work, almost every community in the Kootenays has a climbing wall. Notably, Kimberley has a commercial gym www. spiritrockclimbing.com, and in Invermere, the Conrad Kain Climbing Wall is at J.A. Laird School. I would urge you to join the Alpine Club of Canada and attend summer camps, or instructional weekends out of Canmore and Golden as well as exploring many other learning opportunities that are being offered locally in this age of

connectivity. Photos taken by the teens, and me, can be viewed in the news section of www.conradkain.com I’d like to thank the following sponsors for their investment in building environmental awareness and teamwork skills in the region’s youths: the annual support from the Columbia Basin Community Fund, BC Hydro, the membership of the Conrad Kain Centennial Society, Canadian Mountain Holidays, BC Parks, the Alpine Club of Canada, the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, and parents of the teens who car pool to the trail head.

1. Off with their Heads. Dead-heading is a specific kind of pruning that works well for many annuals and even some perennials and shrubs. When you remove flowers that have finished their show, you accomplish two things. First, you are telling the plant that it needs to keep blooming if it ever wants to re-seed itself. You also stop the plant from wasting energy on forming seeds, leaving it for more growth and blooms! 2. Return of the Lilac. Lilacs are known for their early season display, but the ‘Bloomerang’ lilac blooms in the spring, goes through a rest period in the heat of summer and fragrant flowers return mid-season and continue right up until frost, turning heads and noses alike. Their blooms are abundant, making this plant ideal for cut flowers. 3. Great Balls of Endless Flower. Many hydrangeas bloom once and are done for the season. But the hydrangea ‘Endless Summer’ bears blossoms on new growth, so you can enjoy the flowers several times each summer. For gardeners in cold climates where winter damage prevents other hydrangeas from flowering, 'Endless Summer' ensures a spectacular show. 4. Vertical Flower Show. Whether your clematis will flower again and again throughout the season depends on the type of plant. Clematis are grouped into three types: Type A that flowers only on growth from last year, Type B that flower on last year’s and the current year’s growth and Type C that bloom only on the current year’s growth. Clematis of Type B and C should rebloom with a bit of care. 5. Let the Sunshine in! Coreopsis, also known as tickseed, produces scores of bright flowers in the summer months. The colour of the blooms range from sunny yellow to golden-yellow, pink or bicolor flowers, depending on the variety. Plucking off spent blooms will prevent seed from forming and keep the plant blooming profusely. 6. Brighten Your Days! The white blooms of shasta daisies can brighten any perennial garden with their cheery display. As soon as you see their flowers begin to fade, wither, or turn brown, either cut the spent blooms with a sharp knife or use pruning shears. This will stimulate new growth and result in additional flowers. 7. Black Eyes not an Accident. They are the sunny faces of midsummer across Canada; rudbeckia, also known as ‘Black-Eyed Susan’ was the Perennial Plant Association's plant of the year in 1999. They have a daisy-like appearance and are great additions to any cut flower arrangement. Another positive side-effect of cutting is that it also promotes reblooming. 8. Exotic Touch for your Garden. The blooms of daylilies resemble the luxurious beauty of true lilies and there are many re-blooming varieties to grace your garden, including ‘Stella d'Oro’ and ‘Janice Brown’. In addition to removing spent blooms and damaged leaves to encourage new buds forming, daylilies appreciate a 2-inch layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture and to prevent weeds from growing and compete with the daylilies for moisture and soil nutrients. 9. Not only Your Cats will Love it. Nepeta, commonly known as catmint, is a popular ornamental plant because it is water conserving, deer are not particularly fond of it and it has a long bloom period from late spring to autumn. Give the plant a haircut after its initial flush of flowers in late spring to keep it compact and initiate another cycle of bloom. 10. Towers of Flowers. Salvia stuns in borders with columns of blooms in shades of purple and blue, sometimes even white and pink and this is a plant that is heat and drought tolerant as well. This plant will rebloom from late spring through the fall season. For best success, cut back old bloom stems immediately.

Tip of the Week: As summer rages on it is especially hot in Gaza, Palestine. Israel’s aggression directed to its neighbor has captured the world’s attention, again. While the media seems bent in Israel’s favour the opinion on the streets and certainly on the internet, are not so polarized. When innocents die due to politically sanctioned military insurgence people begin to lose interest in rationalized justifications. The question is: does this scenario show up in the Astrology of Israel? The answer is yes, naturally. Modern day Israel was ‘born’on May 14 1948 at 4:37 pm in Tel Aviv. Briefly, Israel’s chart shows 4 planets in Leo: Moon, Pluto, Saturn and Mars, in that order and they together occupy the zenith or crown of the chart. This reveals a proud and authoritarian approach and potentially one that is dictatorial. This is especially likely due to this particular line-up of planets. The Ascendant is 0 degrees Scorpio which indicates a passionate, and dramatic, even intense mode of self-expression inclined to control in order to change or transform others. The Sun is in Taurus and is square both Mars and Saturn occupying the mid-point of that hard aspect. A textbook interpretation of Mars square (90 degree angle) the Sun suggests having difficulty discerning the difference between assertion and aggression. Sun square to Saturn suggests obstacles and hardships that tend to thwart fulfillment and produce a pessimistic disposition and a Spartan attitude. Regarding current transits, or the position of the planets now and how they affect any given chart, reveals Jupiter in Leo as of July 16 which means it is conjunct (same position) all the planets in Leo at the crown point of Israel’s chart where it will remain for another year. Jupiter has an 11.86 year cycle so it has been that long since its last transit through Leo. Combined with Mars in Scorpio since July 25th conjunct Israel’s ascendant, the arrow’s point of self-expression, illustrates a clear indication of synchronicity at play. Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 20) A playful and passionate mood prevails. How you play will determine the intensity. That your ambitions are running high means you could get very involved. If you get too attached you will push others away. Balance is ever ideal and requires now that you are more aware and to care about how others feel. Focus to weave harmony into the game. Taurus (Apr 20 – May 21) Your confidences should be rising steadily now. However, you may also be contending with some real power players. This could prove to be a test of your mettle and your resolve. Your moods and feelings may be up and down and all over the place. This cycle will change this week, but not before the Moon is full. Focus on arts and crafts to regain your calm and center. Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) A dynamic creative curve continues to drive your world. This could produce a lot of ideas and social interactions too. You may still wish you could feel more secure. You may have to work harder than usual to achieve the peace you seek. As well, you may feel drawn to mentors who can assist. Aim for variety, but not too much or too little. Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22) Ambitions to create a deeper sense of security are now in focus. To this end you feel passionate and determined, yet perhaps at least a bit impatient. The time period you are in may best be regarded as a foundation building process. Your goals and desire for returns and rewards point to the longer term, not the short. Trust this flow and the steady pace. Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 23) You have entered an expansive time. Yet, there also remains a contractive element underway. In fact it points to a rather deep renovation process. This may well include your actual living environment, but it contains spiritual undertones as well. Clearing limiting beliefs, attitudes and/or self-concepts are examples. Affirm your willingness to make internal change. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) Time well spent now will find you in your studio, creative cave, or some other contemplative and cultivating state of mind and approach. Allow yourself to retreat. Yet you can still be productive, perhaps even more than usual. Fortunately, your energy levels are probably running high. Use this cycle to creatively visualize your dreams and craft your ambitions. Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) A new day is dawning. It will activate new associations, friendships and maybe more intimate love interests as well. For now it requires that you keep an open mind. As well, be receptive too and even focused upon attaining new tools, knowledge and skills. Even though you may still be paying dues returns for past efforts are featured, helping you to even the score. Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) The time has come to get some extra attention, the kind you want, deserve and especially have earned. It takes courage to ask, for risk of rejection, but you are probably feeling quite assertive. Make Mars in your sign work for you. It will help to be clear so at least review your objectives and visualize the outcomes(s) you desire to activate your manifestation magic. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) An expansive and creative cycle has begun. It is inspiring you to participate in the game. Whatever stage or arena calls, you are sure to be a big hit. Even a more intimate connection or gathering will suffice. Yet, you may have to clear the way somehow first. This could include getting out of your own way. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) Although you seldom show it obviously, you have a lot of passion churning within. These should be at a rolling boil now. This will remain true for the next few weeks at least, and will even linger longer into September and beyond. How to make the most of this zeal is the question. Part of the answer includes others. It’s time to talent scout. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) Some rolls are better than others and you are probably on a good one now. This has the kind of momentum that allows you to ascend hills and even mountains with relative ease. Yet it is important that you build your momentum now. Be willing to diversify too. You are probably not the type to scatter your energies. This is a big time. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) Your passions, desires and ambitions are percolating. Success with your goals does imply that you have to get to work, yet playfully. As well, it may prove more inspiring and productive to tackle a few projects at once. Some need to focus more intently, but for you one projects feeds off the other and allows for creative synthesis.

Hugs: Big Hugs to Mr. A. from Kimberley, for being a great help in keeping a first time solo flyer calm on her way to visit grandsons in Edmonton…it was appreciated, thank you Hugs: to Air Canada for the awesome views of AB and BC from the air, even when leaving Edmonton with my plane down with mechanical problems, delays and diverted flights, I found staff, passengers, and all, waiting for their flights in terminals friendly and fun to get to know…an awesome day of flying…thank you Slugs: This happened to me on Wed July 30 at 4 pm. I crossed the tracks at 7-11, no train, no lights and I stopped to let someone out of that spot that everyone seems to forget what it was like when they were trying to get out of it. Anyways, suddenly this car is honking and up on my bumper. This upset me greatly and I responded with a hand gesture. He zips up beside me and proceeds to give me what for and that I have no business stopping in that intersection (it is a train crossing not an intersection) and when there was a train coming I was an idiot! I told him there was no train coming when I crossed nor were the bells going and that I did nothing wrong, he was on “MY” bumper and I can and will be courteous to other drivers whether he likes it or not! He proceeds to be rude jerk while my 6 year old grandson sat there in disbelief. Finally I said to him, “maybe you should practice having some common courtesy! With that he rolled up his window and would not look at me anymore but did honk as I made my left turn and he went straight. My grandson summed it up perfectly when he he exclaimed, “Man, how rude!!”. There were plenty of witnesses that could see he was totally in the wrong. Slugs: To a local second hand store for throwing some children’s books into the dumpster!!! If they were not wanted by you, then give them to either a school, a library or in the “public pickup” box outside the library doors. I am sure some kids could get a lot of reading from them. I have been to this second hand store many times

and now I will certainly think twice before going in. What other good things do they throw away? BB Slugs: to the City of Cranbrook, For all the money that was spent to beautify 14th Ave South of 11th St. S. The areas where the benches are in place, the large drainage ditches are covered with long grass, thistles and other unsightly weeds. If the city is so short of staff, they say hire a student. Well here is a job for someone Way to go City Council. Hugs: to Bob, and the Staff at A&W. Throughout July they made over 160 Mama burgers for the Skateboarders who attended the Tuesday night games of SKATE. This is the eighth year that they have helped out with these events. Your generosity and hard work is appreciated. Slugs: to the Kimberley man who took his little daughter’s cat and her tiny kittens and threw them in a bush somewhere. He has been reported. Huge Slugs: to the careless, irresponsible individuals who put their cigarette butts out on a dry log, and who left a fire smoldering in a “fire ring” in the Cranbrook Community Forest! There are no campfires allowed in the Forest and if you are a smoker, please think about your actions! Thank goodness these were discovered before a forest fire was started! The same slugs go to the campers in the Fisher Peak Col who left a big log burning after they left their site. The consequences of this clueless behaviour could have been disastrous for our forests, and Cranbrook, especially in this dry, hot weather. Respect for the pristine wilderness we live in and are able to enjoy is paramount to its preservation. That includes the fact that the trails we hike and walk on are for everyone and the person who left their excretement with TP piled on top in the middle of the trail to Fisher Peak should have to go back and bury it! Come on people, use your brains.

If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382

It’s reunion time for The Jazz Council It’s reunion time! Two years after their last concert together, the original members of The Jazz Council are bringing their infectious swing, magnetic energy, and new original tunes back to The Stage Door in Cranbrook on Friday, August 15 at 8 p.m. Drummer Sven Heyde, pianist Tim Plait, saxophonist Bernie Primbs, trumpeter Laurel Ralston, and bassist Joel Kroeker have been honing their skills and exploring new musical horizons – here in the Kootenays, across the country, and abroad. They are thrilled to meet back at home this summer and pick up where they left off – making great

music in their signature style. The Jazz Council has given over 40 performances since forming in 2010, and released their successful debut album, Dawn, in 2011. They are renowned across the Kootenays for their unique sound and blend of instruments, skillful playing, and irresistible stage presence. The Jazz Council firmly believes that jazz is, at its core, popular music, and can be both authentic and accessible. Their original compositions and their covers weave together many different strands and sub-genres of jazz, giving the listener’s ears a well-balanced diet, while their ability to select sounds

Tickets for The Jazz Council’s performance cost $15 and are available now at Lotus Books in Cranbrook and The Snowdrift Café in Kimberley. Don’t miss it!

Re: Colvin McBurney “Celebration of Life – July 12, 2014” Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude to you, our family and friends for the support poured out to us during this very special event. Although grief is a process we’ve become very much aware of since the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, we cling to our hope and thank our Savior daily for his gift of eternity where we will be together again. Thank you to those of you who brought food, helped with preparation for this event and especially to all who came to support us and shared the fond memories you have of Colvin. Words don’t seem to be enough to express our gratitude for all of you and the support you’ve been to us. May God richly bless you. Love, Joy McBurney and family

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.
