Metro Vancouver mayors have voted to send two representatives to sit as paid directors on the otherwise appointed and unelected TransLink board, reversing their previous rejection of the offer by the province. The chair and vice-chair of the TransLink mayors’ council – North Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton and New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright – will take the two new seats on the CORRIGAN usually ninemember professional board, which grows to 11 directors. Joining the closeddoor deliberations of the board will give the two mayors more insight and perhaps some influence, but not the restoration of full control over TransLink’s budget by elected reps that Metro mayors have repeatedly demanded. It was that insistence as well as a fear of being co-opted that led them to reject the provincial offer of two seats in 2012. Please see TIME, A3

How they’re beating the heat in Burnaby
Mario Bartel
photo@burnabynewsleader.com
It would take another week of hot temperatures before Dave Ellenwood breaks a sweat. Burnaby’s director of parks and recreation said the city’s four outdoor swimming pools and seven spray parks have been wellequipped to cope with the demand for cooling waters during the recent spell of summery weather. After a brief respite, the hot weather is expected to return early next week according to Environment Canada. “People are flocking to the water and we do have a lot of options,” said Ellenwood. “It’s typical of the same periods in other years.”
Ellenwood said the city’s facilities have been busy, especially during the free swimming sessions offered at the pools on Sundays, and at the spray pools and Barnet Beach, which are always free. But if the hot weather stretches into a third week, his department would consider adding hours at the pools and filling up the city’s wading pools for longer periods. “When there’s no respite from the heat, we take extraordinary measures,” said Ellenwood. Meanwhile, at Burnaby Village Museum, volunteers and visitors are falling back on tried-and-true cooling techniques. That’s because there was no air conditioning in the

1920s. So interpreters are putting old electric fans on display and waving
handheld ones to keep themselves cool. Parasols are a functional
and fashionable accessory to keep the sun away, and a tall glass of cool lemonade
stirred with a branch of mint, sipped slowly on the shady porch of Elworth House is a special summer indulgence, said the museum’s Nancy Stagg. Refrigerators still weren’t common in many households, so that meant regular visits from the ice wagon for delivery of frozen blocks to be placed in an ice box where perishable foods could be stored and beverages cooled. Of course the lack of household refrigeration made it impossible to keep ice cream frozen, so that made the neighbourhood ice cream parlour a popular destination on hot days. In fact, said Stagg, it still is. twitter.com/newsleaderfotog
Time to ‘bridge the gap’ with the province: Moore ⫸
continued from FRONT PAGE
The latest changes to TransLink governance by the province this spring gives mayors control over executive pay and TransLink’s long-term vision, while the annual budget and operational control remains with the board. Walton said most mayors feel it’s time to take the seats and try to work cooperatively with both the board and the province, which is supposed to name its own two directors to the board in January. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan calls it a mistake. “It was a foolish move,” he said. “What’s going to happen is
the mayors’ council is going to be publicly disclosing all board blamed for each and every thing deliberations. that happens at TransLink.” “They’re going to have to be Corrigan said mayoral directors part of the secrecy that has been might be lobbied by other mayors the hallmark of the TransLink for transit board since upgrades in the provincial their cities, government made possibly in the legislative Greg Moore, PoCo mayor exchange for changes,” Corrigan If it works, great. They each collect close to $50,000 a year, depending on the number of meetings they attend. Walton, who previously described the optics of accepting extra pay as a director as “problematic” but now says he’s “indifferent” to it, did not vote on the issue during the July 29 closed-door meeting of the mayors’ council. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore said Walton has until now received $5,000 a year for his work chairing the mayors’ council and Wright got nothing as vice chair, adding directors’ pay for serving on the board will now more appropriately compensate them for the work they put in on
TransLink matters. Moore said it was time to take the seats to try to “bridge the gap” with the province on issues such as the expected TransLink referendum on transit expansion, which requires a shared vision by mayors, the province and other partners. “If we didn’t give it a shot it’s tough for us to say it’s not working,” Moore said. “If it works, great. If it doesn’t work, we’ve tried our best to make it work.” Walton said he’s hopeful the TransLink board will become more open and make fewer decisions in camera. newsroom@burnabynewsleader.com

After toiling in their basement workshops or in the society’s machine shop crafting parts for their locomotives, many of which are based on historical full-size trains, the payoff for the hobbyists comes from the smiles of passengers riding the rails, perched in the miniature cars. “That’s all gold,” said Holman. Older visitors are transported back to the simpler time of their youth. Younger ones are captivated by the majesty of the working trains, some of which blow horns and belch steam just like their full-sized ancestors. But converting that excitement into a newly minted hobbyist rarely happens anymore, Holman said. There are too many other distractions that offer instant gratification. “You try to get people enthused, but some people have moved into the digital 4.3125” x 8” era of virtual reality.”

The society’s members often take a selection of their trains on the road, setting up a small demonstration track at model railway shows around Metro Vancouver and up the Fraser Valley. The questions and comments are never-ending, said Holman. “If I can snag out of that one membership application, I figure I’ve done pretty well,” he said. Still, Holman remains undeterred. After all, the real railways have survived challenges to their dominance in moving freight across the landscape. “Without the railways we would still be in the horse-and-buggy era taking a year to cross the country.”

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: A few weeks ago a shot was featured that had raccoons in a chiminea. This week’s great shot is from Adelia and Carl Sparks of South Burnaby, who sent this photo of the bandits on their birdfeeder. Note the mask of the third kit between the mother’s forelegs.
Road to referendum Besides gridlock on the roads and SkyTrain, Metro Vancouver mayors and the province are stuck breathing each other’s exhaust on the path to a transit expansion referendum supposed to happen next March. The BC Liberal government is largely to blame because it mandated the ill-advised referendum, ordered mayors to come up with a prioritized plan — which they did — and now is balking at contributing as much to it as the mayors want. Perhaps the government never thought mayors would agree on a plan but now it’s suffering sticker shock. Granted, there’s a limit to what Victoria can pony up for Metro without depriving other regions, and its offer came with affordability fine print. But clarity is required. The province must spell out the total it would contribute to Metro transit expansion over 10 years — not 12 or 15 or 20, as it suggests. Second, the mayors must pick how they want the rest of us to pay our share. They should first abandon any idea of a carbon tax as a source of revenue. Instead, the mayors need to pick either some form of annual vehicle levy or a regional sales tax, or both, with that revenue to be replaced by road pricing over the long term. Finally, the mayors need to torpedo the notion that voters can cast a No vote to punish TransLink and not pay any more for transit. They should declare that a defeated referendum on the new source will mean the same money will come from higher TransLink property taxes, which mayors have authority to raise. The referendum would then become an either/or debate over how we, as a region, will fund an improved transit system that is critical to our collective future. It would not be a none-of-theabove option for the no-new-taxes crowd or a spanking opportunity for those furious at TransLink. —Black Press

Sleep coaching not rocket science I saw a T-shirt recently that had a logo: “Everyday there seems to a significant increase in the number of things I know nothing about.” I qualify for one of those shirts. It seems more and more I’m reading about or hearing about something that makes me say “Whaaat?” Recently I read an article written by a “Sleep Coach.” Yes, a professional that can help you sleep better. They even have their own professional association, the Association of Professional Sleep Consultants, and they specialize. There are coaches for babies, coaches for adults, coaches for athletes, coaches for pregnant women and coaches for people suffering from various ailments or afflictions. I was intrigued mostly because I might find out some coaching tips that would keep me from dozing off in the last 10 minutes of a show, or during Sports Page. But these coaches help people get to sleep, not stay awake.
Jim McGregor I started to read some of the tips and was surprised that someone would have to have a PhD to tell people the number one tip is that the room should be dark. Right up there in the top five, they say that the room should also be quiet. I figure if their clients don’t know this, maybe they also have other problems. They suggest that there be no TV, stereo or other distraction. This is so they learn the bedroom is for intimacy and sleeping, it is not an entertainment centre. The premise is that couples will use the quiet time to converse about the day or make plans or become closer together. The peace that comes with

intimacy will promote sleep. How is that working for you guys? I recall a story where the wife was laying in bed beside her husband in the dark. He had been quiet and distant since he had come home. She wondered if he was having an affair, was their marriage over, where had she gone wrong? She was afraid to ask him about his silence. Meanwhile, he is laying in the dark with his hands behind his head staring at the ceiling asking himself: “How could I three-putt the 10th hole? Nobody threeputts the 10th hole.” It’s different priorities that keep men and women awake. I’m not sure a bedtime discussion in the dark will always solve a problem. Baby sleep coaches are very popular and a great asset to young parents who aren’t getting enough sleep during the night. Apparently, nowadays, some babies are difficult to put to bed and then wake up during the

night. Is this new? Most of the tips that are provided by the coaches, for a fee, can be garnered from any grandmother for nothing. My brothers and I had a sleep coach. Almost every night our big sister would yell, “If you boys don’t stop fooling around I’m going downstairs to get Mom.” Lights out, no problem. Many years ago we took two skinny little kids to see Doc Gilham because we thought they weren’t eating enough. He didn’t even examine them, he just said, “The problem here is kids trying to raise kids. Kids eat when they’re hungry and sleep when they’re tired. Leave them alone. Go home and be parents.” If you have trouble sleeping, a glass of warm milk and a clear conscience are good places to start. Then, a snuggle and a lullaby. At least that’s what McGregor says. Free transit day was a bust What could be simpler than to provide a “Free Transit Day?” After the screw ups made by those in charge of late, particularly the overpaid executives, a real apology was the least they could do. What would have been better is if the whole executive team collectively fell on their swords, and resigned. This would have allowed their replacements to be hired at much more reasonable salaries. Hello—free transit service means everybody and their dog is going to be using public transit, simply because it is free. So why in the name of God did they run the buses on a holiday schedule, when they should have known that many who do not normally use public transit, will use it, if it is free? I blame the overpaid executives for not only the recent failures, but the mess
they made of “Free Transit Day,” whom I’m betting couldn’t organize a decent piss-up at a brewery. I personally waited, with my walker in tow, for the 49 bus on the corner of Maywood Street and Willingdon Avenue, and it was not long before it came along. But the driver informed me the bus was full, and I was going to have to wait for the next bus. I said okay and sat down in the 27C degree heat, to wait for the next bus. Sure enough after a time another bus did come along, and it stopped to let a passenger off, but the driver also told me the bus was full, and I was going to have to wait for another bus. Having already waited in the heat for not one, but two buses to come along, I was insistent, and told him the last driver told me the same thing. He relented

and let me on, but I had to stand at the front of the bus holding onto my walker. I told the driver I did not blame him, I blame those who planned this. Where were the articulated buses that would have relieved much of the crowding on a Free Transit Day? They advertised it like they were doing us a favour, and not that they owed us an apology. And
what about the thousands who purchased monthly passes, how were they compensated for those service disruptions, and their inconvenience? If TransLink was going to offer a Free Transit Day, they should have gone all out, and ran the buses as if were a regular weekday. I am thoroughly disgusted with the service. I don’t blame the operators,
I would like to share a few comments about the $40 per day the government is offering to parents. I am a father with two children in elementary school. Come September that is where they need to be. Can the finance minister please direct me to a daycare that charges only $40 per day? And if he can do that can he guarantee me two spaces? Is he going to make daycare available for all the children who are not in school? As any parent with children in daycare knows, the cost is at least double that. If you can find a spot. Why is this money
available to parents but not to the teachers? Instead of trying to bribe parents why not bargain in good faith? I’d like to see the library in our school open every day. With an actual librarian in the library. When I was in school that’s what we had, didn’t you? I would like the children with extra needs to have the assistance so they can succeed. I want my child’s teacher to be teaching, not walking a picket line. Put the money on the table and get my kids back in school. That is where they need to be. That is where they deserve to be. And take your bribe and stuff it. Andrew Kroll —via email

The streets of Uptown New Westminster will be alive with music this Sunday, as the Uptown Live music festival brings more than a dozen top-notch bands to the Royal City. The event is ready to establish itself as one of the premier street festivals in the Lower Mainland. This is the third installment of the festival, which brings together the best of the indie music scene from B.C. and beyond, while offering up a wide array of food selections, art exhibits and a host of interactive activities for the entire family. Uptown Live is made possible through funding support from the City of New Westminster and the newly formed Uptown Business Association of New Westminster (UBANW). In two short years, Uptown Live has captured the imagination of local residents and attracted visitors from across the Lower Mainland.
“As an organizing committee, we are committed to providing the community with a premier event,” said Bart Slotman, chair of the UBANW. “The quality of entertainment on our multiple stages and the array of activities for children speak volumes for our commitment to producing a first class event.” Merchants in the Uptown have really embraced the event and are seeing the economic
spinoffs generated by an event like Uptown Live, said Slotman. Royal City Centre and Westminster Centre are co-presenting sponsors of Uptown Live and have supported the event since its inception in 2012. • The festival runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. For more info about Uptown Live including the full 2014 lineup of performances, visit www.uptownlive.ca or www. facebook.com/uptownlive.

Born out of a university art-rock collective, the band first gained attention in Austin from their incendiary live performances and innovative vision of rock and roll. Melding southern rock, hard dance, psychedelic blues, and deep soul, their debut full-length album led to heightening critical acclaim, national touring, and a rare sweep of six awards at the SXSW 2011 Austin Music Awards, including Band of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. Following their album release, The Bright Light Social Hour has embarked on a heavy touring rotation, playing over 300 shows throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They have performed in front of thousands of new fans, most recently at Lollapalooza 2013, Austin City Limits 2013 and opening for Aerosmith at the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City. Australian musical prodigy Ash Grunwald first started playing his own brand of swampy, stomp-box-driven Delta blues covers and originals around the same time RL Burnside was mixing it up with the Fat Possum crew in the United States – inspired by his own hip-hop upbringing and his love of blues standards. For close to 10 years, the five-time ARIA-nominated rocker has been quietly sneaking out of his home in Ocean Shores, Australia for a couple of weeks each Canadian winter for a “working vacation” of gigging and snowboarding in B.C. His breakthrough single Walking from the album Hot Mama Vibes was featured in the Robert DeNiro film Limitless. Ash has opened for the likes of James Brown, Bo Diddly, and the Black Keys. He has toured with Jack Johnson and has played the Montreaux Jazz Festival – a true indication he resonates with a worldwide audience.

Ben Rogers is a folk artist and classic storyteller with a voice like smoke-damaged velvet soaked in Tennessee whiskey. Trusty old acoustic guitar in hand and boots stomping out a steady rhythm, Ben can hypnotize audiences with his timeless tales of murder, betrayal, war, justice, love and the human condition, just like a modern day folk troubadour should and does. Rogers was raised, and is based in Vancouver and though it’s a far cry from the backcountry roads of the southern U.S., he embodies the values and musicality of traditional folk, Americana and country, ala Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger with a little Roger Miller and Tom Waits. Ben is an individual as a performer, and possesses a careful balance of mystique, mischief and gentle kindness that emanates through all aspects of him.

Pacifika Local World Music fusionists Pacifika burst onto the global music scene in 2008 with their critically acclaimed debut album Asunción that was widely praised by, among others, The Wall Street Journal, Village Voice and National Public Radio in the US. The burst of publicity led to high profile shows alongside Feist and Sharon Jones at The Hollywood Bowl. 2010’s Supermagique was the iTunes editor’s pick for “World Music Album of the Year” and a Juno nominee for “Best World Music Album,” which catapulted the band from Latin Alternative darlings to a broader audience worldwide. Their new album, Amor Planeta, builds on their genre-bending sound and promises to win new fans around the world. www.pacifikaonline.com
Hearing Vancouver’s Headwater is like listening to the West Coast of Canada in song. Freewheeling, fierce, sentimental and sexy, the band has earned its reputation as one of the finest acoustic roots groups around. Formed in 2003 by childhood friends Jonas Shandel (vocals/guitar/banjo) and Matt Bryant (guitar/ mandolin/ vocals), the band’s sound reflects the upbeat chemistry of a songwriting partnership that is 15 years in the making. Growing up on the edges of the forested Lynn Headwaters Regional Park (hence the band name), Shandel and Bryant draw inspiration from the rugged Pacific wilderness. Tied together by rich vocal harmonies and hook-filled choruses, Headwater reflects a diverse range of influences from heartland rock to classic new wave to unabashedly radio-friendly pop. www.headwater.ca

Get fit from within... Rich Hope & the Blue Rich Rangers “Close up the honky tonks,” they said. “No!” came the answer. And with that, Rich Hope went back to the country, live and delirious, a blue denim devil at the end of an arc stretching all the way from George Jones to the Sadies. Thus began the band unofficially known as His Blue Rich Rangers. Scott Smith eagerly jumped on board—the hottest pedal steel man in the province, maybe the country, flanked by crisp, lanky Ben Laborie on rhythm guitar, Erik Nielsen injecting Rick Danko distillate on bass, and Hope’s faithful sticksman of 15 years Adrian Mack pulling up the rear. The sound was funky, cosmic, and almost always on the right side of wild. Sets were long and boozy. Before long, the Rangers couldn’t stuff anymore bodies inside the tiny Main Street venue they called home, so they took to selling out bigger rooms, and then bigger ones. Studio sessions followed and you can be sure there will be more to come.

The Matinee Formed in Vancouver in 2007, the quartet includes longtime friends Matt Layzell on lead vocals, guitarist Matt Rose, drummer Peter Lemon, and guitarist/ vocalist Geoff Petrie. The group began their career touring their self-released full-length album on their own Blue Collar Records imprint, followed two years later by a self-titled EP. In 2011, the group’s third place finish in the Peak Performance Project enabled them to produce and record their first feature album, We Swore We’d See the Sunrise. The band worked with producers Steve Berlin (R.E.M., The Tragically Hip, Los Lobos), as well as Steve Bays, frontman for indie outfit Hot Hot Heat, releasing the album on Light Organ Records in early 2013 to enthusiastic reviews. The band is currently working on their follow-up album, with new music to be released in late 2014. www.thematineemusic.com

BESTiE was formed in 2012 in East Van when friends Andrew Janczewski, Tristan Orchard, Daniel Ruiz and Rob Cameron started jamming with the goal of creating a fun, accessible indie band. Soon after exploring their array of world and pop music influences, they began crafting their unique sound. In January 2013, BESTiE released their debut single, Pineapple, with a video shot and directed by lead singer Orchard, a Gemini-nominated filmmaker whose documentaries have aired on Bravo! Television and short films played in festivals around the world. In June 2013, BESTiE were announced as one of the top 20 finalists in the renowned B.C. talent search, The Peak Performance Contest, competing for over $200,000 in prize money to further their careers. Included was a week-long boot camp with record producers, agents, managers and songwriters in attendance. Vancouver’s Rykka (formerly known as singer songwriter Christina Maria) has re-emerged from her acoustic past transforming herself into a fierce, electro-alternative, pop-rock powerhouse. With the release of Kodiak, her 2013 12-song album produced by Ryan Guldemond (from Mother Mother), Rykka has retired her acoustic guitar and in its place are danceable beats and a feisty attitude that’s hard to ignore. From the phenomenally hooky lead “Blackie,” to the groove of “Grasslands,” Kodiak is a carefully considered concept album, each song written from the unique perspective of a different animal. It’s an exciting re-birth that has attracted the attention of fans, critics and the music industry alike. The excitement surrounding her new album has allowed her to tour endlessly in Europe and Canada including the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Is there such a thing as unsentimental sincerity? If so, this could be it. A resonate warmth carries Jordan Klassen’s crafted, literate lyrics through vivid images and stories. Repentance, Klassen’s latest release, juxtaposes a multi-textured simplicity with a trembling confidence and a fresh familiarity. Playful and wise, vast and intimate, the album travels from the jubilant in “Go to Me” and “Piano Brother” to the quiet intensity of “The Horses are Stuck” and “Strengthen Me with Raisins.” These are songs that fuse melody and poetry, stinging the imagination and summoning forgotten emotion. Klassen was named a Canadian act to watch in 2014 by CBC Music. With a showcase at SXSW Music and other summer festivals, 2014 promises to be a big year for this emerging Canadian star. jordanklassen.bandcamp.com
Santa Lucia Like a multi-ethnic gathering of friends, the seven-member band has created a sound that evokes the early days of Latin funk and the sounds of Santana and War. The addictive combination of Nuyorican Boogaloo, West Coast Funk and the ever-present Cuban grooves engulf the stage with monstrous horns and bass, funky breaks, polyrhythmic beats and furious lyrics in English and Spanish. Santa Lucia has enjoyed much success, including a Western Canada Music Awards nomination in 2005 and a nomination for Best Children’s Recording for the song The Hero Inside penned for the TV cartoon series Cackleberries. Recently, Santa Lucia has refined its stage skills opening for many U.S. and international touring acts. Their sound is a spicy blend of rock, salsa, funk and some high-speed Colombian cumbia. www.santaluciamusic.com

bodies or potentially affect their olfactions, their ability to find their home waters.” Resident fish at risk include threatened bull trout and plentiful rainbow trout. At a news conference in Likely, Imperial Metals president Brian Kynoch said the water in the pond is tested with rainbow trout, and its arsenic level is one fifth of the limit for drinking water. He described the effluent as “relatively benign.” The huge spill of tailings and water tore down Hazeltine Creek, which is where endangered Interior coho salmon are supposed to spawn in a few weeks. Gord Sterritt, executive director of the Upper Fraser Fisheries Conservation Alliance, said the group, which represents 23 First Nations from Williams Lake to the Fraser’s headwaters, had already raised concerns
that planned releases of effluent into the creek by mine operator Imperial Metals might harm the coho. Chinook salmon also spawn near the outlet of Quesnel Lake at the Quesnel River. “Those fish will be holding or just about to enter the spawning grounds pretty quick,” Sterritt said. “We’re pretty concerned about what the toxic elements are going to do those fish. And then there’s the scouring of the debris pile that is potentially going to be moving down the lake and into the river.” Contamination that reaches the mainstem Fraser could affect fish spawning hundreds of kilometres away, such as in Stuart Lake near Fort St. James. Sterritt said he’s fielding calls from First Nations as far downstream as Lillooet that are alarmed about the potential impact on their food fisheries.

An estimated 1.5 million migrating Fraser River sockeye salmon are destined for Quesnel Lake, which has now been contaminated by the Mount Polley mine tailings pond spill. The Quesnel system sockeye make up a major portion of what’s hoped to be a record run this year, said Craig Orr, executive director of the Watershed Watch Salmon Society. “This is one of the greatest environmental disasters we’ve had on the Fraser,” Orr said. “Some of the effluent will be getting in the Fraser. The big question is how concentrated, how harmful it will be. Some of these compounds have short term impacts and some have much longer term impacts.” While the Quesnel Lake stocks are among the Fraser’s most abundant, Orr is particularly concerned that other much weaker stocks that spawn in other tributaries of the Fraser could be harmed. “People have to be concerned about not just what it means for the returning fish but For full contest details visit Return-It.ca/winit • Only One Entry Per Day Until Sept. 1 for the juveniles rearing in the lake right now,” OPEN HOURS: 1045A Lougheed Hwy., Coquitlam (across from IKEA and beside Boston Pizza) Monday - Saturday 9:00am - 6:00pm he said. “We don’t Sunday & Holidays 10:00am - 5:00pm 778.397.5005 know if it’s going to We also take electronics & paints www.recyclingBC.com accumulate in their

House prices hit all-time high in Lower Mainland Jeff Nagel Black Press
Lower Mainland real estate prices have hit new all-time highs, at least for detached houses. The benchmark price of singlefamily houses tracked by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver climbed to $980,500 in July, an increase of 6.5 per cent from a year ago. Attached homes were up 3.4 per cent year-over-year to $472,400, while condos were up 2.2 per cent to $376,500. Benchmark prices show the shifts of a typical property and exclude the most expensive ones that can skew average prices much higher. The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB), which includes Surrey, White Rock and North Delta, reported a benchmark detached house price of $568,300 in

July, up three per cent from a year earlier. The strongest one-year gains across the Lower Mainland have been for detached houses in Vancouver (up around 10 per cent), West Vancouver (up 9.3 per cent), as well as condos in east Burnaby, which are up 11.7 per cent. The strongest gain in detached house prices in the Valley has been the 6.6 per cent one-year increase in White Rock. Nowhere in the Lower Mainland have house prices beaten the oneyear gain of the Canadian stock market to this point. The TSX composite was up 22.5 per cent over one year as of the beginning of August and 45 per cent over five years, a mark beaten by real estate in only two Vancouverarea markets. twitter.com/jeffnagel

Five classic Mustangs you can still afford ‘‘
The best convertibles and fastbacks with the highest horsepower engines can bring well over $65,000... but all isn’t lost for the Mustang collector on a budget.
’’
In the run up to the big 50th anniversary of the Mustang, prices of the classic first version of the Mustang, the 1964½ (technically a 1965 model) through 1966, have been moving up. The best convertibles and fastbacks with the highest horsepower engines can bring well over $65,000 and there has been renewed interest in vintage Mustangs of all years but all isn’t lost for the Mustang collector on a budget. Here are five of our favorites that you can still afford: 1964½-66 Convertible (six cylinder): If you simply must have the first version of the Mustang in a convertible and have $25,000 or less to spend on a nice one, well then you’re likely to have to settle for the six-cylinder model instead of the 260 or 289 V-8. And the six of the ’60s was nothing like today’s 300-plus hp base V-6. Nope, the 200-cubicinch straight-six was good for just 120 hp, so performance was leisurely at best. No matter, the six still looked great.
TOP LEFT: The 1988 GT 5.0 convertible helped bring cheap V-8 performance back to teh masses. ABOVE: The Mach 1 (this a ‘73) had pumped-up good looks. LEFT: The 1964 hard top can still be found for under $25,000.

than the V-8. Fuel prices never climbed the way that the industry expected, and the 5.0-litre V-8 was further developed with new, more-efficient cylinder heads, and eventually fuel injection, giving it better gas mileage and much more horsepower with less complication and expense, so the sophisticated SVO disappeared after 1986.
We like the 1989 model because it was the 25th anniversary year of the Mustang (which Ford barely noticed). The Fox Body Mustang might not have been the most glamorous body style ever, but it was one of the cars responsible for ending the “Malaise Era” of sluggish and dull American cars. With the 5.0-litre V-8 boosted to 225 hp, in 1987, the Mustang brought cheap V-8 performance back to the masses. Making a move to South Surrey’s South Point Walk Streetside Developments is bringing convenience and luxury to South Surrey’s emerging neighbourhood of South Point with South Point Walk, a collection of condominiums that is close to everything you can possibly imagine. “This is a very unique location,” says Vanessa Isler, marketing and sales manager for Streetside, a division of Qualico. “There aren’t too many suburban locations where you can walk two minutes to get a coffee or dinner.” South Point Walk is just steps from shopping and dining at
South Point Exchange, as well as the boutiques at High Street via a walking path directly linking the two. Homeowners will also have easy access to the U.S. border and Highway 99. Schools, golf courses and other leisure and recreation opportunities are also just minutes away. The beauty and convenience of the location continues at the homes themselves. Outside, the West Coast contemporary architecture features bold roof lines, hardi shingles and arched brick accents. Each home has a large balcony, and the ground

floor homeowners will have a spacious patio and direct access to green space. Inside, the kitchen includes classic shaker-style cabinetry, complemented by a solid eased square-edge Quartzite countertop and full-height ceramic tile backsplash. Stainlesssteel appliances, recessed pot lighting and under-cabinet task lighting all combine for a truly beautiful space. The bathrooms are spa-inspired, with solid slab granite or Quartzite countertops and undermount basin sinks. The ensuite features contemporary flat panel cabinetry, in-floor heating and a hand-set ceramic tile tub or shower surround with marble tile accent. The second bathroom, where applicable, has shaker-style cabinetry and a deep soaker tub. Streetside is counting down to the completion of the first phase this fall, and is currently offering a promotion on the available homes. Homes at South Point Walk start at $226,900. For more information, visit www.southpointwalk.ca, call 604-560-3238 or visit the sales centre at South Point Exchange, 860-3014 152 Street, Surrey, open noon to 6 p.m. daily except Fridays.

Wildwood Lakefront Cottages are located on Washington’s Lake Whatcom, just 55 kilometres from the Blaine border. Right on the pristine shores of the lake, families will find plenty of activities, or just the perfect place to relax and enjoy spending time together.
Canadians are discovering Wildwood Lakefront Cottages By Kerry Vital
Washington’s Lake Whatcom is a largely undiscovered gem for Canadians, yet it is only 55 kilometres south of the Blaine border! Lake Whatcom is over 16 kilometres long and a pristine watershed. It serves as the drinking water for nearby Bellingham so it has stringent rules in place to protect it, and that makes swimming and all lake recreation even better. At the south end of the lake on a quiet cove, a family campground called Wildwood has been a popular designation for Canadians
since the 1950s. It has recently been redeveloped into a private cottage community and now you can purchase your own family getaway at Wildwood Lakefront Cottages, right on the picturesque shores at South Bay. The natural setting is one of the highlights of Wildwood, with its two streams, huge cedar trees and pristine lake and shoreline. The Canadian developers have added in a tennis/ball hockey court, a swimming pool and hot tub, playground, walking trails, clubhouse, marina, and covered picnic pavilion to complement the lake activities.
“It’s a real family experience,” says Wayne Lyle, the developer’s Canadian spokesperson. “Canadians are buying here for the legacy, for the memories.” One of the big draws for Canadians is that the property is gated and private, has a resident on-site manager, and your landscaping is all looked after. Whether you want to go fishing, take out the canoe or go for an evening swim, you’ll find a ton of outdoor activities available onsite. The private marina has 34 private boat slips and 15 mooring buoys, and a number of guest slips. The cottages themselves are made for cozy family times, with five different floor plans to choose from and three natural colour schemes. The main floor features the living areas, sunny window seats, decked-out kitchens and one bedroom or one-bedroom plus den configurations with sleeping lofts
above. “Kids love the sleeping lofts; the ceilings are five feet in height,” Lyle says. “They think it’s built just for them!” While not large in size, these are upscale cottages with hardwood flooring, quartz countertops, stainless-steel appliances and stone fireplaces. Some of the cottages have rooftop decks that are perfect for star-gazing. Each cottage includes a covered outdoor deck to give you that indoor-outdoor life that everyone loves in the summer, some with an outdoor fireplace. You’ll also find an outdoor wood burning fire pit with every cottage, perfect for lazy fall nights full of stories and s’mores. Wildwood is also fortunate in that it has over 1,700 feet of waterfront; that means the furthest you can get from the lakefront from any cottage is only 150 yards! “This a great base camp for families,” Lyle says. “With many other Pacific Northwest attractions nearby and with the price of real estate in B.C., this lakefront property is certainly a very attractive alternative!” Lots at Wildwood start at $160,000, and fully finished cottages including lots start at $330,000. For more information, visit www. wildwoodlakefrontcottages.com or call the Canadian contact number at 1-855-588-7788. The site is open for tours on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or any time by appointment except Sundays.
