Man robbed, assaulted in Mill Lake Park Victim sleeping when two men rifled through belongings

A robbery victim was assaulted in Mill Lake Park yesterday when he confronted two thieves who were in the process of stealing from him. The 51-year-old man was sleeping on some grass next to a picnic area in a northern section of the park at about 11 a.m., when he was awakened by the sound of someone or something rummaging through his belongings. He confronted two young men who were in the process of taking his wallet, identification, cash, prescription medicine and a portable electronic device. One of the suspects struck the victim in the neck during the altercation. Both of the thieves ran away along the paths toward Gladwin Road. The suspects were both Caucasian. One was about 22 years old, 5’ 8”, 165

The other was about 20 years old, 5’ 8”, 170 pounds, with dirty-blonde hair longer than the other suspect’s. He was wearing light-coloured shirt with a picture on front and blue jeans. Const. Ian MacDonald said police are looking at the two suspects in connection with two assaults that occurred in Mill Lake Park in June. “Certainly, there are some similarities in terms of the robberies and the location,” he said. The first prior assault took place on June 9 at about 3 p.m., when a 26-year-old man was riding his bike in the northwest portion of Mill Lake Park. Three young men asked the man for a cigarette and then demanded all of them. The victim was then hit several

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for a cat burglary on the same day that it occurred. The incident took place in the early morning of Tuesday, July 29, when a suspect entered a home in the 2700 block of Blackham Drive through a bedroom window and took a laptop and a smart phone that were close to a sleeping female. Members of the Abbotsford Police Department’s patrol division and forensic identification unit gathered evidence at the scene, and a 17-year-old suspect was identified. Officers with the crime reduction unit then conducted surveillance on the teen later that evening. The officers saw him reach into an open

The second assault was on June 21 at about 5 a.m. A 39-year-old man was riding his bike on a path in Mill Lake Park when he was approached by three young men who demanded that he give them his bike. In that incident, the suspect briefly locked a teen boy in the bathroom while he rummaged through the home. The culprit then forced the boy to accompany him through the house in a search for more valuables before locking him back in the bathroom.

An Abbotsford Police officer pulled over two drivers who he saw involved in a road-rage incident on Saturday, only to discover that each man had a child in the car. Const. Ian MacDonald said the drivers were seen by the officer at around noon as they headed west on Downes Road near Gladwin Road. MacDonald said one car was seen passing the other on a double solid line.
The car that was passed then sped up, and the officer followed the two as they taunted one another. The car in front would slow down and not let the other vehicle pass, while the vehicle behind would tail the car in front. Eventually, the two cars ended up side by side at the traffic light on Downes Road at Clearbrook, and the officer saw them gesturing and heard them cursing at each other. One of the drivers, a Caucasian man, made a racist comment to the other
man, who was South Asian, and the officer feared the situation could become physically violent. He activated his vehicle’s emergency lights and pulled over both cars. MacDonald said the officer was surprised to see that each man had a child of about nine years old in his vehicle. The drivers each received tickets totalling about $200, including for passing on a double solid line and for obstructing traffic. The officer also talked to them about their behaviour, especially in front of impressionable children.

Striking Cascade Aerospace technicians with Unifor Local 114 and their allies from across the Lower Mainland announced plans to picket the Aerospace, Defense and Security Expo (ADSE) on Thursday. The B.C. Ministry of Environment is looking into a leak from a local business that poured iron oxide into Matsqui Slough earlier this week, turning the waterway a reddishbrown colour. The slough bore an intense rust colour at Harris Road, where it passes metres from a sign declaring it a salmon habitat. Al Dutra, who lives next to the slough, noticed the discoloration Wednesday morning. “I was a little worried,” he said. “I thought, ‘Holy doodle.’” The city was already on the case, and told Dutra the cause of the change in colour. Iron oxide is a common compound, and is widely used as a colouring agent. It also occurs naturally as rust. On Wednesday, the slough’s colour be-
came normal further downstream where the water passes beneath Riverside Street. That offered some comfort to Dutra, who keeps llamas and grows strawberries at his home. “I thought it was something that got spilled, something poisonous,” he said. But he still has some concerns. “It’s not normal,” he said. “I’ve been here a long time.” The city’s director of engineering, Jim Gordon, confirmed the iron oxide spill, although he did not identify the business involved. “We believe the source of the leak is now fixed,” Gordon said. “The ministry of environment is working through mitigation.” Neither the B.C. nor Canadian environment ministries were
available for comment at press time. Iron dust isn’t toxic but can have a dramatic effect on bodies of water. In 2012, a B.C. First Nation and a salmon company drew flak after dumping iron dust in the Pacific Ocean in an experiment designed to fertilize the water, and spur a plankton bloom. The idea was that the iron dust would both help the salmon and trap carbon underwater, but the experiment sparked criticism from a range of organizations worried about unforeseen effects. While the sockeye have begun their annual spawning run, a 1997 study noted that the Matsqui Slough would be favoured by coho and chum salmon, which spawn in the fall.

The clock is ticking I understand that the BCTF and BCPC will be meeting on the 8th to discuss the teachers’ contract. Hopefully this will be two highly educated teams capable of working toward a solution. The educators teach their students problem-solving skills, conflict resolution and assessing both sides of an issue. To date this does not seem to have happened. The BCPC team must have the same training. Until now neither side seems to be listening to the other. The way I see the situation is that the government does not have the funding to address class composition as they promised no deficit spending during this “down� period.
Also, increases must not exceed previous contract settlements. BCTF keep bringing up “torn-upâ€?contracts which is now in the court of appeal. Was this contract not signed with the NDP? Could this be considered a “poison pillâ€? settlement for the new government? I would suggest that the portion now in court should be removed from negotiations to await a court ruling. The teachers should be offered salary and benefits based on a model of previous public sector settlements. I know there are wiser minds than mine working to solve this issue, so get on with it. Along with the growing economy in media, suicide has too. Pictures posted onto billboards, into magazines, on bus shelters and everywhere else of tiny models have people, mostly teens, feeling self-conscious. People have been taught that being beyond skinny is in fact beautiful, and that having a little bit of meat on our bones puts us into the category of fat and ugly. And, with pictures posted everywhere it is hard to ignore. These things provoke bullying, and lead to cases of self-harm and suicide. It was only weeks ago that a close friend of mine tried to commit suicide partly because of self-consciousness. It seems nowadays that most people know at least one person who self-harms or has either attempted or succeed in committing suicide. I wrote this article to raise awareness to suicide and while writing this I kept in mind that media is not the cause of suicide and bullying, but it has done a big part in provoking it. And the provoking has gone far enough that people I know closely are becoming affected. Keep an open mind about what you see, because it is not all truths. Jessica Read Abbotsford

In the name of common sense I have been following your series of articles on blueberries and I just wonder how, in the name of common sense, has the use of propane cannons become “normal� farm practice? We have been buying blueberries for years from Onnink’s farm and they are a perfect example of what normal farm practices should be. They have left some big trees at the edge of the field so the hawks have a place to nest. What a simple solution! I cannot understand why cannons with such high decibel levels that irritate the neighbours for months during the summer, are needed to
scare off a bird that can hear worms crawling in the ground. Granted, the starlings are a pest, but they are an introduced pest. Would it not be better to reduce the population of starlings? Many of the blueberry farmers state that they can’t use nets and one of the reasons is that they cannot use the picking machines if the field is covered with nets. This is not a problem with the farmers in New Zealand – they have high nets with a door large enough to get their equipment inside. Brian Pinkerton Abbotsford

The neighbour from hell I live in North Bradner, near two blueberry farms. The farms happen to be right across the street from each other. One farm does not use cannons and seems to operate very successfully. The second farm, unfortunately, the farm closest to me,
uses three triple-shot cannons. At one time or another, myself and many of my neighbours have spoken to the owner, pointed out how annoying the cannons are, and have asked him to try something different, but to no avail. We wonder why do some blue-

ABSDs should be banned outright As we are working on our farm on this gorgeous Sunday afternoon, we can’t help but feel frustrated by the noise of the propane cannons that we can hear from multiple different directions coming from the farms that surround us. As the cannons rotate, the shots that directly face us make us jump. They go off at least every minute when the noise
is combined from all of the different farms. We shouldn’t have to give up our task of working outside and leave our farm to avoid the noise. These audible birdscare devices (ABSD) should not be considered a right to farm because they intrude other farming practices and people’s lives. plans to pick up a delivery of the drug ecstasy from two others – Nathan Hall and Jeffrey Laviolette – on April 2, 2013 and transport it to San Francisco. The drugs never made it to them because, earlier that day, Hall and Laviolette were walking through a forested area along the U.S.-Canada border from Abbotsford into Washington when they were spotted by U.S. border agents. The two fled and Hall allegedly fired a gun. Both discarded two backpacks as they were fleeing the agents, and the bags were later found to contain 58.5 pounds of ecstasy. Laviolette was apprehended at the scene while Hall got away, launching an overnight manhunt that involved authorities on both sides of the border. Hall, 36, was arrested early the next morning at an Abbotsford apartment where Laviolette’s girlfriend was also present. Laviolette was sentenced in December to a 10-year jail term on charges of conspiracy to distribute ecstasy and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. Hall is currently going through the B.C. court system on other charges – including breaching his probation in Langley, and driving while suspended and resisting a police officer in Mission – and has not yet faced charges in the U.S. case. He has five charges pending against him south of the border, including conspiracy to distribute ecstasy, conspiracy to import, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. Henifin, 27, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ecstasy.

Abbotsford’s Amrit Sidhu and the rest of the Canadian under-18 men’s field hockey team believe they’ve got a leg up on the rest of the world heading into the Youth Olympic Games. And that’s because the sport itself is undergoing an extreme makeover. Field hockey is tradi-
tionally played with 11 players per side on a soccer-style pitch. But the Youth Olympics, to be held Aug. 16-28 in Nanjing, China, will mark the major international debut for the “Hockey5s” version of the sport. As its name suggests, it’s played five-a-side, on a smaller playing surface enclosed by boards. The changes are de-
signed to make the sport more exciting and accessible, along the lines of how sevens rugby has expanded the popularity of the traditional 15-a-side version. And for Canadians like Sidhu, who grew up playing ice hockey and street hockey, the new rules are awfully familiar. “It’s kind of like ice hockey, which is good for Canada, because it’s

kind of in our blood,” he said with a smile. “We’ve been watching some video (of other nations), and they’re not very keen on using the boards, where we’ve played ice hockey and we use them all the time. I think it’s an advantage for us.” Sidhu, a 17-year-old forward who recently graduated from Rick Hansen Secondary, has taken quickly to Hockey5s. At the Pan American Youth Championships in Puerto Rico in February, he was Team Canada’s top scorer with 11 goals in seven games, and notched the game-winner in an 8-5 semifinal victory over the U.S. which clinched a Youth Olympics berth. Canada ended up with the silver medal after falling 5-2 to Argentina in the final. His strong Pan Am performance notwithstanding, Sidhu still had to make the Youth Olympics squad, and he
was named to the nineplayer roster in July after a national tryout camp in Vancouver. “At this age, it’s something you couldn’t imagine,” enthused Sidhu, who plays for the Burnaby Lake Field Hockey Club. “I was thinking at age 24 or 25, when I’m in my prime, I’ll be in the senior Olympics. To get there at this stage, it’s unbe-
lievable.” The Youth Olympics are a relatively recent International Olympic Committee initiative, with the first Youth Summer Games being staged in Singapore in 2010. They are held every two years, alternating between summer and winter events, and feature athletes in the 14-18 age bracket. Impressively, the
75-member Canadian contingent for the Youth Olympics includes four from Abby – the others are rugby sevens athlete Lauren Kerr and wrestlers Austin Gurm and Mickey Khehira. Whalers dominate at regionals The Abbotsford Whalers’ collective performance at the Fraser Valley regional swim championships in Mission was notable in terms of both quantity and quality. The local summer swim club not only won the overall team aggregate title for the most total points on the weekend, they also took home the prestigious “points per swimmer” award for the highest average per swimmer attending. Individually, the Whalers claimed an eye-popping 10 division aggregate awards, courtesy Emily De Jager (Div. 2 girls), Haley Klenk (Div. 3 girls), Mervin Jerodico (Div. 3 boys), Fallon Quast (Div. 4 girls), Ely Davidson (OCat1 boys), Jean Leslie (OCat2 girls), Brady Utas (Div. 6 boys), Madeline Fedora (Div. 7 girls), Gavin Wiese (Div. 7 boys) and Alycia Connorton (Div. 8 girls). The distinction between the elite teams and the also-rans is rarely as clear as it was during the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League’s just-completed regular season. Five teams – the Langley Junior Blaze, North Shore JuniorTwins, North Delta Junior Blue Jays, Abbotsford Junior Cardinals and Victoria Junior Mariners – finished at last 14 games over .500. Everyone else in the league finished below the break-even mark. So heading into the eight-team BCJPBL championship in Victoria this weekend, it appears to be a fivehorse race for the title. “The top five, anybody can beat anybody,” said Abby coach Shawn Besse. “Especially going into a weekend tournament, it’s all about who gets hot at the right time.” The Junior Cards (2915) boast great pitching depth – always crucial in a compressed tourney – led by Hunter Cunningham and Josh Froese who posted nine and eight wins, respectively. Key offensive cogs included Trevor Wilford (second in BCJPBL batting average at .420) and Jeremi Longpre (whose three home runs tied for tops in the league). Besse’s squad has further reason for optimism as pitcher/first baseman Carter Loewen, who missed most of the season with a back injury, could return to the lineup this weekend. “If our batting is strong and comes through, we’ll do fine,” said Besse, whose team is in a pool with Langley, Victoria and the Whalley Junior Chiefs and needs to finish top-two to advance to the semis. “Our pitching and defence are great. “It’s been a really fun year, and I’ve liked the work ethic that everyone’s brought. “It all comes down to one weekend now.”

A forest firefighters’ truck of choice
Forest fire conditions in this province are at an all-time high and the wood is very dry. The men and women who fight these fires every year rely on their vehicles to take them to the battlefield. Remote back roads and sometimes the forest floor are the roads on which they must travel. There is a variety of vehicles in the firefighter fleet but lately they have been using the Ford Super-Duty as the prime support vehicle. The new 2015 version is powerful enough to haul heavy trailers and large enough to double as a mobile office. The 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8, with higher power ratings for 2015, coupled with a 6R140 heavy duty Torqshift six-speed automatic transmission delivers improved torque, horsepower and fuel economy. The engine pumps out a whopping 860 ft.lb. of torque at 1,600 rpm and 440 horsepower at 2,800 rpm. It has lots of get up and go. Ease your way into the throttle and before you know it, you are at highway speeds. Power and acceleration are smooth and effortless. When properly equipped the Super Duty has a maximum tow rating of 14,152 kg (31,200 lbs) and a total payload of up to 3,293 kg (7,260 lbs) The interior is very functional. The available LCD productivity screen keeps you up to date with vital information, such as fuel economy numbers, towing, off-road information and voice command navigation. A rapid heat supplemental cab heater is available for those cold days that you need interior heat quickly. When you leave your mobile office, it is nice to know you have options with storing your valuables. Under-seat locking storage compartments beneath the first and second row seats provide space for laptops and other important things. I really liked the layout of the gauges and controls in this vehicle; all are easily read and accessible. There are 12-volt outlets everywhere, two in the dash, one in the centre console, one in the back of that console, right beside the newly added 110V/150W power inverter, and there’s a supply located in the rear under seat storage bin on the driver’s side. The front seats I found very comfortable and perfect for a long day at work. The rear seating positions were also very comfortable with lots of
legroom. Noise levels in the cab, or lack thereof was amazing. This is must be the quietest diesel on the planet. It runs

A fundraiser takes place Aug. 15 in Chilliwack for an Abbotsford man’s participation in the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride (SNKCR). Bob Ahuja is participating in the bike ride from Winnipeg to Toronto, starting on Sept. 4, with a goal of raising $5,000. Ahuja first participated in SNKCR in 2012, riding 7,000 kilometres from Vancouver to Halifax and raising $25,000 in memory of his 14-year-old
cousin, who died of cancer in 2010. “As I approached the Atlantic Ocean on Sept, 21, 2012, I realized that the feeling of helping kids was so great that I wanted to continue being involved with SNKCR,” Ahuja said. In 2013, he rode as a relay rider from Vancouver to Winnipeg and, this year, he is carrying on to Toronto. Ahuja said one of his goals this year, besides raising funds for cancer re-
search, is to encourage someone else in the community to commit as a rider or volunteer for SNKCR. The fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 15 takes place at Duke’s Country Pub (41582 Yale Rd.). The # of detached home sales in Abbotsford was up 13.1% over 2013 and the # of townhome sales was up 8.3% over 2013. However condo sales are still struggling, down 8.3% over 2013. KNUDSON Constance “Connie” God took her to her heavenly home on July 31, 2014 at the age of 95 years. Connie was born to George and Annie Mosby on April 24, 1919 at Ryley, Alberta. She was baptized as an infant and renewed those vows in confirmation as a teenager. She was always active in the life of the church, singing in the choir, church organist, Sunday School teacher and held several offices in the ladies organization. On March 30, 1940 she married the love of her life, a neighbor boy, Martin Knudson and they were devoted to each other for 61 years. Martin passed away in 2001. Together they served the Lord and the church, he as a pastor and she as a pastor’s wife. Their years of service included congregations in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. She was predeceased by her parents, six brothers and one sister, her husband and son-in-law Pastor Harold Lovrod. Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Corine Lovrod, Sharon (Lorin) Koss, Carol (Larry) Glover, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, one sister and one brother. A service of celebration and thanksgiving for the gift and life of Connie will be held on Monday, August 11th at 1:00 p.m. in the Matsqui Lutheran Church, in the Village of Matsqui. Viewing will be held at 10:30 a.m. in Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, followed by burial at Hazelwood Cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be given to Matsqui Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice. Online condolences can be left for family at www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com

WATSON Robert Edward Rob passed away at his son’s home in Surrey, at a family gathering on July 27th, surrounded by those who loved him, after a brief bout with lung and brain cancer. He was born December 22, 1939 at Mission City. Survived by his loving wife Janice Laidlaw, brothers and sisters, and sons, Shawn of Surrey and Scott (Jennifer) with grandchild Hannah of Kamloops. He received B.Ed and MA degrees from UBC and worked in Prince George, Peace River North, Nanaimo, Powell River and Coquitlam as well as in the Ministry/Department of Education. He greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, wine making and especially in retirement, curling and golfing at Uplands. A good joke always made his day. Donations to the Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. No service by request - have a toast in memory of a happy life. “Take the road least travelled”

After 82 years of love and devotion to her family, Elsie passed into the welcoming arms of her husband, Johnny. She will be deeply missed by her son, Darryl (Theresa), daughter, Jennifer (Kent) Harris, grandchildren, Kendall and Colby, and many extended family and friends. Elsie was born in Punnichy Saskatchewan, one of seventeen children to Helen and William Laslo. She is survived by her siblings, Emma, Lynn (John), Vera (Pat), Helen (Gary), Bill, Albert (Georgina). She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Julia, Annie, Margaret, Rose, and brothers Frank, John, Andy, Bernie, Tony and Ernie. Elsie was a hardworking homemaker, admired for her amazing talents in the kitchen and renowned for the “best buns ever”, berry wines of every variety, cabbage rolls, cookies, jams, pickles… the list goes on. Elsie and John loved to entertain; family and friends have many fond memories of dinners, parties and dancing to live music on their hardwood floors. Elsie had a knack for putting together large meals where guests left with home cooked treasures or fresh baked treats. Even as her health was failing Elsie could be heard saying “but I don’t have any baking to send home with you”. In the early years Elsie was also an accomplished seamstress, prolific gardener and gifted painter. She was a collector of cookbooks, rolling pins, Depression glass and all things blue (her favourite colour). The family offers heartfelt thanks to friends and family for their kindness and support and to Dr. Andrew Edelson for his care of Elsie these past few years. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC. It was Elsie’s wish that we enjoy the day we gather, share food and drink, and wear “some blue” to remember her. A Service will be held on Friday, August 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm, at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home, 7386 Horne Street, Mission, BC. WINDEBANK Muriel Passed away on June 17, 2014 at the age of 90 in Mission Memorial Hospital. Born on October 20, 1923 in Mission to W.J. (Bill) and Dorothy Windebank, she spent most of her life here. She was fairly well known for working in the store and solving plumbing problems. She was also well known at St. Andrews United Church playing organ and singing in the Choir. Her other interests were with the Mission Historical Society and the Museum. She is predeceased by her sister Dorothy, and brother Gordon. She will be sadly missed by her other sister Christine, and nieces and nephews Lee (Lucy) Windebank, Mark Windebank, Tamra (Jeff) Smith-Wasal, Candy (Craig) Smith Niccolson, Bruce (Karen) Smith, Karen (Barry) Windebank Funk, Sheila (Ben) Windebank Lazarus, as well as 8 great nieces, 2 greatnephews, and 4 great great nephews. Joseph Elmer Richard, known as ‘Spud’ passed away in Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Center on July 29, 2014 at the age of 87. Spud was born in Duvar, PEI on November 13, 1927 to Frank and Cecelia Richard. He was the oldest of 6 children. He is survived by his loving wife Louise of 63 years, beloved brother Leonard (Jean) and sister Shirley, and sister-in-law Hazel, predeceased by his parents and sister Rita and brothers Reggie and Francis, brothers-in-law Joe, Alyre Richard and Alyre Gallant and sister-in-law Isabel. Spud left home at the age of 16 and enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1943. After 5 months they found out his true age and discharged him. He was very adventurous. After his short stay in the army he went to Ontario but didn’t like it there. He then moved to B.C. and worked on an oil tanker for several years, which took him to many places including South America, then back to P.E.I where he met Louise & married her in January 1950. He brought his new bride back to B,C. where he worked for several years in the lumber industry operating and repairing heavy duty machinery. Later he changed his profession and drove for B.C. transit for 32 years. In his spare time he built 3 boats, all named after his wife, and enjoyed cruising the ocean waters. They sold their home in Vancouver and retired in Abbotsford 25 years ago. He made many new friends at Kingsview Estates through Saturday morning coffee’s, special dinner events and lawn chair visits in the garage. Spud was a lover of cars, boats, chocolate bars and Tim Horton donuts. Prayers will be on August 6th at 7:00 pm at St. Ann’s Catholic Church and Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church on August 7th at 11:00 am, 33333 Mayfair Avenue, Abbotsford B.C.
