Flights of fancy ALBERTA AUDITOR SAYS REDFORD USED PUBLIC MONEY INAPPROPRIATELY BY CHRIS PURDY THE CANADIAN PRESS EDMONTON — Alberta’s auditor general says former premier Alison Redford and her staff used the power of the province’s top political office to break expense rules and inappropriately use taxpayer money, in some cases for personal gain. In a biting report that the Alberta government has forwarded to the RCMP, Merwan Saher found that Redford’s office consistently failed to demonstrate

that travel expenses were necessary and a reasonable and appropriate use of public funds. He took particular issue with the way Redford used the province’s fleet of planes to ferry her, and in many cases her daughter, to events that included Progressive Conservative party fundraisers and personal trips. “Overall, the expense practices and use of public assets by premier Redford and her office have fallen short of publicly stated goals, Saher wrote in his review of Redford’s travel expenses released Thursday. “How could this happen? The answer is the aura

of power around premier Redford and her office and the perception that the influence of the office should not be questioned. He laid the blame squarely on Redford and her staff. He said other government departments were “wary of challenging decisions or felt “trapped, and often worked around or ignored rules so the premier wouldn’t be personally linked to those decisions. “After all, the premier is the premier, Saher said.

Chasity Vinneau, left, and her friend Jordan Unrau came to the rescue of an injured gull Thursday in Morrisrow. The two girls spotted the bird limping and dragging a wing across Metcalf Avenue in Red Deer and scooped it up before it could be run down by a vehicle. The girls suspected it had been injured during an intense hail storm that went through Red Deer Thursday evening.

Red Deer police are concerned about the accuracy of a website crime map pinpointing hot spots for criminal behaviour in the city. Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre published the map with the 2014 data on at www.cacpc. ca on Aug. 1. The interactive map, available by clicking on the resources tab at the top of the page, has a disclaimer that it does not list all crimes and relies on RCMP archives from the City of Red Deer, information gathered from community discussions and tips submitted to the centre’s website. Red Deer RCMP Cpl. Leanne Molzahn said RCMP archives from the City of Red Deer website only contain police press releases and the detachment does not send out a media release on every incident that happens in the city. “It may be in fact true that something happened in that location if they take it off of one of our press releases. But it certainly doesn’t give an accurate representation of everything that’s taking place, Molzahn said on Thursday. She said information gathered from community meetings held this summer or from other conversations, and from website tips, have also not been confirmed by police.

Last year, the first few Alberta cases occurred in mid-August, including the first case in Central Alberta. Dr. Martin Lavoie, the province’s deputy chief medical officer, said West Nile-infected mosquitoes are probably around right now and have bit people, but it takes about a week for someone to become infected and more time for them to seek medical assistance.
