Authorities are still trying to determine the circumstances that resulted in the death on the weekend of a 38-year-old man who appears to have consumed the potent painkiller fentanyl. Police were contacted just before 3 p.m. on Friday by staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital who reported that a man had been

taken to hospital after being found in medical distress inside his home in the 2100 block of Peardonville Road. The man died in hospital. Const. Ian MacDonald said a bag containing a white powder was found near the man at his home, and analysis confirmed it to be fentanyl. MacDonald said the drug is 50 to 100 times stronger than other opiates and is often mixed in with other drugs, such as heroin or cocaine, to make it more potent.

This can be done by the users themselves or, in other cases, is unknowingly sold to them under the impression they are buying heroin or oxycodone. Fentanyl can be used in various forms, including snorting, injecting or taking pills. It also comes, in pharmaceutical form, in a patch to slowly release the drug into the body. A tip to police officers who were conducting traffic enforcement on Sunday has led to the bust of a grow-op and “chop shop” in Abbotsford. Const. Ian MacDonald said a person approached officers who were on Livingstone Avenue at about noon and indicated that he or she had seen someone with a gun at a home in the area. MacDonald said police went to the home – located on Livingstone Avenue just south of Maclure Road – and obtained search war-

grow-op, the number and types of weapons found, and the quantity and types of vehicles. Two men and a woman were detained, and MacDonald said police are still trying to determine their connection to the property and the criminal activities taking place on it. The property was still blocked off on Tuesday afternoon with police tape and driveway barricades reading “Restricted area. Keep out.” MacDonald said more information will be released when it’s available.

In both cases, the man was revived with a Narcan kit, which reverses an opiate drug overdose. MacDonald said fentanyl cases are no longer uncommon in the region.

“When you hear a spike in heroin-related deaths, one of the things you do think of almost automatically (as a police officer) is, ‘Is it fentanyl?’ ” The BC Coroners Services

reported in early June that fentanyl had been involved in the deaths of at least 13 people in the Fraser region in the first four months of 2014. In all of 2013, there were

12 such deaths and only six in 2012. In July 2013, Abbotsford Police warned that a potent form of heroin, possibly containing fentanyl, was being bought, sold and used locally. At the time, there had been seven heroin overdoses – one of them fatal – and police reported there had been a 39 per cent increase in the number of calls for assistance for people in medical distress. However, a heroin sample sent for testing came back negative for fentanyl, although police acknowledged that other doses in the community could have contained the opiate. Charge stayed in knife incident

Investigators checked out evidence at the Abbotsford Food Bank in April after a report of a man brandishing a knife. was waving around a knife. Officers arrived on scene and encountered Roberts, a homeless man with a history of mental-health issues, in the parking lot. Roberts failed to comply with repeated police commands to get down on the ground, and officers then shot him using guns that fire rubber bullets and beanbag rounds. Roberts, who was not seriously injured, was taken to hospital for treatment and a mental-health assessment. He was charged a few days afterwards, and was later re-

leased from custody. The release on April 22 of a video taken by a bystander at the scene resulted in some people – including homeless advocate Ward Draper of 5 and 2 Ministries – accusing police of having used excessive force in Roberts’ arrest. In the video, which shows a portion of the arrest, Roberts is not holding a knife. Following the release of the footage, Draper said there had been too many police officers on scene and it was excessive to shoot Roberts, especially when the knife was not in his hand at the time.

New federal laws requiring First Nations bands to post their financial statements, remuneration and expenses online went into effect this week, but so far, only one of three Abbotsford/ Mission bands’ numbers are available to view. Chief Alice McKay from Matsqui First Nation said the band completed its audit Tuesday and was planning to submit its documents later that day. The Leq’a:mel First Nation just east of Mission is in a similar situation. A band representative said they have nearly finished their audit, and will be sending the required information to the federal government in about 10 days. The Sumas First Nation – which has about 300 members – had its reports online ahead of the filing deadline. Band chief Dalton Silver earned remuneration of $27,023, and logged $10,079 in expenses. Band councillor Jacqueline Bird made $39,880, and registered $13,176 in expenses. Coun. Clint Tuttle saw $36,600 in salary, with $16,100 in expenses. Coun. Murray Ned earned $9,480 in pay and $166 for expenses. He is also the executive director of the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance (LFFA) which paid him

$50,000 in salary, plus $27,500 in expenses. The LFFA is comprised of 30 First Nation communities from the mouth of the Fraser River to the Fraser Canyon. The organization promotes and supports the management of fisheries for First Nations people. The Sumas First Nation posted total revenue last year of $8,514,573 (which includes a $1.1-million grant from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and $5.2 million from the same ministry for contracts for service), and overall expenses were reported at $8,087,349, leaving a $427,224 surplus. The leftover money was added to the previous year’s total, which brings the band’s accumulated surplus to $9.7 million. The First Nations Financial Transparency Act, passed in 2013, requires bands to post their financial information online. Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) has stated the act is consistent with generally accepted accounting rules that apply to government-owned businesses across Canada and reporting requirements for members of Parliament. AANDC’s Valerie Hache said there is a backlog of information that government workers are trying to process and post online, and it could take a week or more for all the documents to be uploaded.

A criminal charge will not proceed against a homeless man who was shot with rubber bullets by police in April after allegedly waving around a knife in the parking lot of the Abbotsford Food Bank. The charge of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose was stayed July 28 in Abbotsford provincial court against Colin (Roy) Roberts, 57. Provincial Crown counsel spokesman Neil MacKenzie said Crown stayed the charge because it was felt that, although there was “some degree of disturbance going on that resulted in police attending,” it was not likely that Roberts would be convicted on the “available evidence.” “In particular, the Crown was not satisfied … that it could be proven that he (Roberts) was in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,” MacKenzie said. The incident in question took place April 16, when police were called by food bank staff to the facility on Essendene Avenue after reports that a distraught man

Abbotsford Police spokesman Ian MacDonald said this week that he expects police will again be criticized following the staying of the charge against Roberts, but the department stands by its actions in April. “We play a role in the process, and our role on that day was to respond to 911 calls that a man was brandishing a knife,” he said. MacDonald said police had two main priorities – ensuring that Roberts was not a danger to himself and that the public was protected from potential harm. He said police recommended the criminal charge, which Crown initially approved, to ensure these issues were properly addressed. For example, conditions of Roberts’ release from custody could have included a ban on owning any weapons, MacDonald said. MacDonald said the Abbotsford Police Department’s mental health liaison officer has continued to work with other community partners to ensure that Roberts’ needs are addressed in the community, including ongoing offers of housing.

Development partner sought for hospital land The proposal to redevelop the MSA Hospital land on McCallum Road in Abbotsford will move one step forward, as Fraser Health has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to secure a development partner for the lands. The health authority envisions the future of this site to be a walkable, urban village with a state-of-theart Campus of Care for seniors, including a 200-bed residential care facility, a community health centre, multi-family housing, and retail and park space. The project will be a partnership between Fraser Health, the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District and the City of Abbotsford. In February, the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District approved in principle the provision of 40 per cent of the projected $35.2-million capital cost for the seniorsâ€™ complex. The remaining 60 per cent will be contributed through the province and Fraser Health. Fraser

Health will own and operate the facility. The community health centre would be the second facility of its kind in the Fraser Health region. The first opened in the summer of 2013 on the Mission Memorial Hospital campus.Â The core philosophy of community health centres is to co-ordinate and situate together a range of community health services and programs. This means people can receive the majority of their health care in one location. The redevelopment of the MSA lands is subject to a successful request for proposals (RPF) process, which is expected to last until early 2015, when the final scope and scale of the project will be determined. MSA Hospital was built in 1953 and was dismantled in early 2009, following the opening of the new Abbotsford Regional Hospital on Marshall Road in August 2008.

Three local projects are among those receiving grants from the Pacific Salmon Foundation this year, the organization announced this week. The Abbotsford Ravine Park Salmon Enhancement Society will receive a $3,500 grant to go toward a redesign and update of its water collection system to better accommodate the raising of young fish before release. The project will cost $16,100. The Fraser Valley Conservancyâ€™s $27,400 plan to remove an old fish barrier from Deer Lake Brook in order to create spawning habitat and improve access for salmon will be the beneficiary of a $6,500 grant. And the conservancy will also get $6,500 to go towards restoration work at Windebank Creek in Mission. That project, which focuses on salmon habitat and monitoring of the creekâ€™s water and salmon, has a total cost of $23,600.

An Abbotsford man has been charged with distribution and possession of child pornography. Lukas Michael Litten, 35, has been released from custody under court-ordered conditions. The major crime unit of the Abbotsford Police Department began an investigation into the matter in October 2013, based on work conducted by an APD detective. Const. Ian MacDonald said the detective has “proactively gone after any and all evidence” on these types of cases for the last three years or so. “Almost all of these investigations are a result of his work and diligence. Sometimes there are tips, sometimes he finds the evidence. Either way, he makes it his focus,” MacDonald said.

Police executed a search warrant at a central Abbotsford home on July 24 and seized several items, including computers, hard drives and storage devices. Litten was arrested and charged on Thursday. Conditions of his release include: not to communicate with or be alone with anyone under the age of 18; not to attend any place such as a public park, school ground or recreation centre where children under the age of 18 could be present; and not to possess or use a device capable of connecting to the Internet. According to the provincial court database, Litten has no prior criminal record in B.C. He is next scheduled to appear Aug. 11 in Abbotsford provincial court. A critical question of time

The provincial government is quite predictably getting some flak from the B.C. Teachers Federation and the NDP over a plan to pay parents of children (up to 12) $40 per day for each school day missed in September – if the BCTF strike is not settled by then. While the move is certainly political, it does recognize the fact that parents are hit hard by the teachers’ strike, through extra daycare and other costs. The government saves a boatload of money – $12 million a day – as a result of the strike. It is not unreasonable to share some of those savings with those who are paying extra money in day-to-day expenses, as a result of this strike. It also should serve as a reminder to BCTF members that there will be no paycheques in September if the strike isn’t settled by then. Finance Minister Mike de Jong is right that it would do little good to legislate teachers back to work. That tactic has been used far too often in the past. There needs

to be an actual agreement between the two sides, for their own good and for the good of students and parents. The bargaining system involving the two is in terrible shape, but hard negotiations could result in an agreement — if there is some genuine willingness on the part of both sides to do so. Teachers who are caught up in this dispute will have to carefully consider their actions over the next month or so. Many are already feeling the financial squeeze. Several weeks out of work in September will really hurt, particularly as they are not getting strike pay. Will they put pressure on the union to try and settle? The government holds almost all the cards. It will face no political pressure of any consequence, with an election three years away. Settlements with other unions will eventually force the BCTF to toe the line. The question is, how long will it take? And will kids pay the price again by losing instruction time this fall? – Black Press

Other Hand As we wait for the Fraser and its tributaries to fill with what may be one of the biggest sockeye salmon runs in recorded history, the successful return to their gravelly birth channels could be a difficult one. The extended heat wave (except for a day to two of rain) over the past few weeks, and forecast to continue for a few more, may be great for us, but lousy for fish. After spending a number of years in the cool ocean, the sockeye are about to swim into warm rivers. Many years ago one of my sons rafted down most of the Fraser in similar weather conditions, and noted dead salmon choking the back eddies of the river, killed by water too hot to support them before they could reach home spawning streams. Whether the current weather will have

an effect remains to be seen, though as of early Monday morning a more sinister threat occurred. The tailings pond of Mount Polley mine, southeast of Quesnel, breached its holding berm, sending several millions of cubic metres of toxic water and materials into a stream which feeds Quesnel Lake which, of course, flows eventually into the Fraser. While at this writing it’s too early to determine the severity of contamination, suffice to say residents in the vicinity have been told not to drink the water, or even bathe in it. No one I guess, can tell the bears, deer and other wildlife about the possible dangers. As for the salmon that will make it into Quesnel Lake which, with its tributaries, is apparently responsible for about a quarter of the province’s sockeye production, no one will know until water quality/contamination levels are determined if the water toxicity is disastrous. Since these salmon will absorb and concentrate any toxins, there is also a strong probability they will pass the contamination up the food chain as bears, eagles and other creatures feast on their carcasses

when they expire after spawning. It will be interesting, over the coming days, to hear if this calamity will become a major catastrophe, and what if anything can be done to remediate what was, until now, a pristine wilderness vital not only to salmon rearing, but myriad other wildlife.

In the meantime, while we struggle to keep our waters clean, folks and farmers well to the south of us are facing a different crisis. In the Central Valley of California, which is responsible for virtually all the vegetables and fruit we see in our grocery stores every winter, crops are dying for lack of water. California is in its third year of severe drought.

About 10 per cent of California’s huge agricultural production is shipped to Canada, and with all those veggies requiring large and expensive quantities of water to grow, consumer costs are expected to skyrocket. A head of lettuce apparently, is about 95 per cent water; the fine wine from California’s Napa Valley even more. Without adequate water, Americans may decide to keep their remaining food production at home, or greatly increase prices for export products. Water is a precious bounty, and we are so dependent upon it, whether it is a potentially devastating environmental calamity in B.C., or a dire dearth down south. Hopefully, what just happened near Quesnel Lake can be contained and remediated with no ill effects. What can’t be changed without, as the saying goes, an “Act of God” is the lack of water in one of the world’s principal growing areas. May we realize both.

Expectant parents are now having to access other programs after Fraser Health cancelled prenatal classes in Abbotsford. The courses were previously offered by Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) at the public health unit on Marshall Road. Fraser Health offered a “prenatal access grant” to ACS for families on limited incomes to pay for participation. The grant program was cancelled “in an effort to standardize services across the region and ensure appropriate use of resources,” said Fraser Health spokesperson Nafisa Abdulla. “As a public agency mandated to improve the health of the population we serve, Fraser Health must evaluate how we spend our resources and ensure that we are getting maximum health outcomes,” she said. Families in Abbotsford are now referred to prenatal services in neighbouring communities. These include sessions offered through Douglas College in Chilliwack and Mission. Other programs include a four-week series of

classes offered through the business Abundant Birth and Wellness, which began the sessions in July. The next series is scheduled to start Sept. 15 at Your Pregnancy Options (32920 Ventura Ave.). The series is facilitated by Justine Pearson, who has been certified as a birth doula since 1999. For more information about those classes, visit prenatalclasses.ca. Fraser Health also refers expectant parents to the Best Beginnings public health program to be connected with services in their community. Moms-to-be are encouraged to register for the program in their first trimester at the same time as they sign up for pre-admission at the hospital where they plan to give birth or when they visit their doctor or mid-wife. Sizzling hot days didn’t discourage thousands of people from taking in the 2014 Abbotsford Agrifair and Mighty Fraser Rodeo over the weekend. Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner said months of planning ensured the fair, which ended Monday, went off without a hitch. “Despite our 30 degree Celsius temperatures, the people came out and had a good time,” Brenner said. “We’re very, very pleased.” Attendance numbers won’t be known for some time, but she said crowds were strong all weekend. Brenner said the musical performances were a hit, and not only because of the artists. “It’s a pretty beautiful setting to be outside listening to music.” A second demolition derby show was added and large crowds packed the grandstands for both events. “Everybody puts in so much time and effort for months all year,” she said, “so when you see it come off in a four-day event with the happy faces and the smiling kids and the animals, it really is a satisfying feeling.”

Assault suspect released on bail

Dad worried about more attacks Abbotsford News

The dad of a teenage girl grabbed by a man at a bus stop on July 26 is angry and concerned that the accused has been released from prison on bail. The dad, who cannot be named in order to protect his daughter’s identity, said he believes the man is a threat to the community. “His next act could go bad or turn violent … There are too many variables for him to be out on the street unsupervised,” the dad said. His daughter, 18, was waiting at a bus stop in the 2400 block of Montrose Avenue – in front of Abbotsford Community Services – on July 26 at about 2 p.m., when she was approached by a man who wrapped his arms around her from the front and wouldn’t let go. The man then allegedly moved a short distance away and appeared to be exposing and touching himself. Police were called, and a suspect matching witness descriptions was arrested in the area. 43, was charged two days later with sexual assault and committing an indecent act. He was released on $1,500 bail under conditions that include not being alone with anyone under the age of 16 and not attending parks and other places where children under 16 are expected to be. His next court appearance is on Aug. 18 in Abbotsford provincial court. The dad of the victim said his daughter has been “absolutely freaked” since the incident. She won’t sleep in her room and will no longer walk the four blocks to work. He is worried there is the potential for more young women to be victimized.

Local sport events receive $15,000 in grants Three upcoming Abbotsford sporting events are receiving $15,000 in combined funding from the provincial government’s Hosting BC program to help stage the competitions. Water Ski and Wakeboard B.C. (WSWBC) will be hosting the BC Wakeboard Championships on Aug. 2, and will get $3,000 from the program. Earlier this month, the WSWBC also hosted the 2014 Water Ski Provincial Championships, that were held on July 26 and 27 at Albert Dyck Park, and received a $5,000 grant. The British Columbia Wrestling Association’s B.C. Open Club Championship, taking place in March 2015, is receiving $7,000 in funding. Hosting BC funds competitive events that support long-term athlete development plans for provincial sport organizations.

Safeway raises funds for MD The Safeway store on South Fraser Way in Abbotsford is among locations across Canada raising funds this month for Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC). Customers are invited to donate $2 to the campaign, running from July 31 to Aug. 15, and receive five Air Miles Reward Miles in exchange. Last year, the Abbotsford Safeway raised almost $6,400 and just over $994,000 was raised across Western Canada through the “Make Muscles Move” campaign. B.C.’s first provincial cable wakeboarding championship highlighted a busy weekend of watersports action at Abbotsford’s Albert Dyck Park. Water Ski and Wakeboard B.C.’s wakeboard championships were held on Walmsley Lake, located within the park. The provincial championships in the traditional boat-towed version of the sport were contested on Saturday, with the cable-driven event running Sunday at Valley Wake Park on the east end of the lake. “This is the first provincial event we’ve ever had for cable wakeboarding,” enthused James Balzer of Valley Wake Park, which boasts two electrically powered cable systems and is in its second year of operation at Walmsley Lake. “Everything went really well. We had probably a dozen riders from Vancouver Island and some from the Interior, so they were coming from all over the province.” Local highlights included Abbotsford’s Daniel Dyck taking first place in the pro men’s boat-towed division, with fellow Abby native Balzer finishing second and Alberta’s Nick Doresy taking third. Doresy was the champ in the cable competition on Sunday with Balzer second and Keaton Roper third. Balzer said that the provincial championships were a “test run” for Valley Wake Park – the local facility has secured the cable national championships in 2015 and 2016. “We’ve got the opportunity to host a lot of big events, and it’s exciting,” he said. “This is a really good way to grow the sport. We’re getting a lot more people out on the water because the cable (version of the sport) is so accessible.”

The AAA bantam (15U) squad added a silver medal, while the A mosquito (10U) team took bronze. “I think baseball is extremely strong in this community,” asserted Dan Dick, president of the Angels association and coach of the peewee AAA team. “I think our association has done a fantastic job of developing players, and the biggest thing is, the kids are having fun. “If you’re doing that, good things will follow.” The AAA peewee team had an incredibly dramatic Sunday at their B.C. tourney in Cloverdale. They edged Richmond 7-6 in a three-hour, nine-inning semifinal (games are typically seven innings), with Logan McDonald supplying the winning run with a solo homer in the top of the ninth. In the final against host Cloverdale, they found themselves trailing 5-0 in the first inning and 8-2 in the third, but battled back to win 12-8. Carlin Dick (3-for-3 at the plate) and Dayton Peters (3for-4) paced the offence, while pitcher Tyler Nelson was lights-out after coming on in relief. “It was a crazy day of baseball – I had never experienced anything like it in my life,” marveled Dick, whose team advances to the national championships in London, Ont., Aug. 19-26. “The resiliency was amazing.” The AAA Tier 1 mosquito squad won B.C. The Mighty Fraser Pro Rodeo packed the grandstands at Agrifair on the weekend, and spectators were treated to fantastic performances in seven events. • Kyle Bowers of Brooks, Alta. was the bareback riding champ, scoring 86 points to edge Luke Creasy (85) and Kelly Wardell (83). • Steer wrestling ended in a tie for top spot, with Clayton Moore of Pouce Coupe, B.C. and Chance Butterfield of Ponoka, Alta. both clocking in at 3.9 seconds. Travis Reay and Dru Melvin tied for third at 4.2 seconds. • The Central Alberta duo of Rocky Ross and Marty Lillico wrapped up the team roping event in 5.3 seconds, besting Travis Gallais/Kevin Schreiner (5.9) and

Sockeye openings start despite survival concerns Recreational, commercial fishermen gear up for big Fraser salmon run Jeff NAGEL Black Press

Commercial fishermen and sports anglers are now getting their first crack at what’s hoped to be a record return of Fraser River sockeye salmon. A 38-hour opening for commercial gillnetters took place over the B.C. Day long weekend in Johnstone Strait near Campbell River, likely the first of several openings this summer. Recreational fishing for sockeye began in marine areas last Friday and on tidal sections of the lower Fraser Sunday, with non-tidal areas further upstream expected to open the middle of this week. Department of Fisheries and Oceans area director Les Jantz said most sockeye stocks appear to be coming in close to or slightly below expectations. There’s no in-season estimate of the run size yet, but the midrange forecast was for

23 million sockeye, with potential for that to be as low as 7.2 million and as high as 72 million due to an unusual level of uncertainty. Fishery managers are carefully watching to ensure enough sockeye get back upstream to spawn in light of challenging river conditions. Water levels are 11 per cent below normal, which Jantz said also means the river can heat up fast to dangerously warm temperatures in a bout of hot weather. The river temperature was 18.4 degrees on July 31 – 0.7 degrees higher than average for this date – and expected to warm to 20.7 degrees in the next few days. Sustained exposure to water at that temperature can stress migrating sockeye, killing many before they spawn. DFO will this year let up to 65 per cent of the run be caught or die of other causes

on their migration, an increase from 60 per cent in past years to allow more fishing opportunity. That decision has been criticized by conservation groups that say DFO has authorized overfishing that will result in a high bycatch of threatened stocks, such as Cultus Lake sockeye and Interior coho, which migrate alongside the more abundant sockeye. Jantz said DFO is prepared to make further adjustments to the fishing plan as more run size information comes in to ensure weak stocks aren’t severely damaged by the sockeye fishery. Fishing by First Nations for food, social and ceremonial purposes has been underway since late July, with 70,000 sockeye caught as of Aug. 1. Aboriginal groups will also get to fish commercially for sale under “economic opportunity” agreements

Cyclist recovering after crash Police say an 86-year-old cyclist is fortunate to have suffered only six broken ribs after a T-bone collision with a vehicle on Sunday morning. The crash took place at about 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of McDermott and Campbell roads on Sumas Prairie. Const. Ian MacDonald said the cyclist was travelling north on McDermott Road when he was struck by a Nissan SUV, driven by a 50-yearold Abbotsford man heading east on Campbell.

MacDonald said stop signs are located for people travelling north and south in that area, but there are none for people going east/west. The crash took place on a long flat stretch of road where the speed limit is 70 km/h. MacDonald said it is “miraculous” that the cyclist survived the collision. He is currently recovering in hospital but is expected to be released later this week.

FRIGON, Guy Rene It is with a heavy heart that we announce the peaceful passing of Guy Frigon, age 57 on July 30, 2014, after a courageous 2 year long battle with cancer, he went to be with the Lord. His love for hunting, boating and quadding with family and friends was always a highlight for him. His devotion to his family and much appreciated cooking talents, his willingness to help others in need has all been an inspiration to everyone who knew him. His legacy will live on through his children and grandson. He was truly a remarkable man and well loved. Lewis Michael (Mick) Hubert Mick Lewis passed away Sunday July 27, 2014. He was born in Halifax, NS May 5, 1934. He is survived by his wife Marjorie of 60 years, son Michael (Cheryl) Lewis; daughters Peggy (Rick) Gamache and Trish (Rolf) Soth. Grandchildren - Curtis (Lynne) Gamache; Ryan (Jocylene) Ridgway; Emily Soth; Amanda (Kevin) Grant; Erica Soth; Karl (Kaela) Soth; Dan Lewis. Great Grand Children - Jessica, Rebecca, Sarah Gamache; Elizabeth and Maxwell Grant; Aidan, Kiley, and Kaeden Soth. Mick retired from RCEME in Chilliwack after 27 years service in - Halifax, Gagetown, London ON, Fort Churchill, Calgary, Chilliwack in Canada and Europe and Egypt out of the country. He was very proud to be chartered member of the Mt. Cheam Lions and he enjoyed the camaraderie over all these years. He gave 47 years service to Lions since he joined in Oromocto NB. We wish to thank the staff a Waverly Seniors Village for their very caring support for Mick during the last months. Joseph Elmer Richard, also known as ‘Spud’ passed away in Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Center on July 29, 2014 at the age of 87. Spud was born in Duvar, PEI on November 13, 1927 to Frank and Cecelia Richard. He was the oldest of 6 children. He is survived by his loving wife Louise of 63 years; beloved brother Leonard (Jean) and sister Shirley; sister-in-law Hazel. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Rit; brothers, Reggie and Francis, brothers-in-law Joe, Alyre Richard and Alyre Gallant and sister-in-law Isabel. Spud left home at the age of 16 and enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1943. After 5 months they found out his true age and discharged him. He was very adventurous. After his short stay in the army he went to Ontario but didn’t like it there. He then moved to B.C. and worked on an oil tanker for several years, which took him to many places including South America. He went back to P.E.I where he met Louise & married her in January 1950. He brought his new bride back to BC where he worked for several years in the lumber industry operating and repairing heavy duty machinery. Later he changed his profession and drove for BC transit for 32 years. In his spare time he built 3 boats, all named after his wife, and enjoyed cruising the ocean waters. They sold their home in Vancouver and retired in Abbotsford 25 years ago. He made many new friends at Kingsview Estates through 604-864-3932 Saturday morning coffee’s, special dinner events and lawn chair visits in the garage. Spud was a lover of cars, boats, chocolate bars and Tim Horton donuts. Prayers will be on August 6th at 7:00 pm at St. Ann’s Catholic Church and Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church on August 7th at 11:00 am, 33333 Mayfair Avenue, Abbotsford B.C.

SMIRLE, Michael James It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Michael James Smirle, beloved husband to Mary-Anne, amazing father to James and Jeff and adoring father-in-law to Allison and Lauren. Raised on the family farm in Bradner, British Columbia, Mike was the only child of Jim and Joan Smirle. Nothing gave his parents more pleasure than watching Mike excel at piano, academics and sports. Graduating top all-round student in 1972 from Abbotsford Senior Secondary, Mike began his academic career in the faculty of music at UBC. With the passing of his father in January of 1974, Mike took the following year to travel extensively with his mom. During this year, he got his lumber grading ticket and returned to UBC in the fall but this time in the Faculty of Science. Mike graduated with his BSc in 1978, and went on to pursue a Masters in Pest Management followed by a PhD from Simon Fraser University. On February 1, 1990 Mike’s career brought the family to their home in Summerland. Mike worked at the Summerland Research Centre where he led a research program in insect toxicology. He was a respected scientist, valued colleague and much appreciated by the agricultural community he served. It was at UBC, on October 5, 1974, that he met his soul mate, Mary-Anne and they began their journey in life together; what would be nearly 40 years of incredible love and a deep and everlasting friendship. They completed each other in every way. Mike’s greatest joy was spending time with his boys and their friends. Mike loved every moment that he spent on the sidelines of local soccer pitches and track and field venues, attending his sons’ high school plays or, most especially, cheering on James and Jeff at the hockey rink, watching them thrive and grow into the incredible young men they are today. That joy became even more complete when Mike welcomed his two daughtersin-law, Allison and Lauren, to the Smirle family. Mike’s lifelong love of music allowed him to share his talents as a regular organist at Holy Child Parish and singing with the Musaic Vocal Ensemble during his years in Summerland. For Mike it was always ‘family first’ and he would spend countless hours carefully planning family travel adventures. Whether it was to the family cabin in New Denver or down-under to Australia, Mike reveled in watching his family enjoy every moment and build a lifetime’s worth of memories. He was an incredible husband and father whose generous spirit and kind heart will be dearly missed by everyone fortunate enough to know Mike. A prayer vigil and visitation was held at the Church of the Holy Child, 14010 Rosedale Avenue, Summerland, BC on Friday, August 1, 2014 at 7 p.m. Rite of Christian Burial followed on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Church of Holy Child at 11 a.m. Memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
