Some residents aren't happy to learn that they may have more neighbours than they bargained for.

The District of Kent has been working on a revised Official Community Plan since last April, and has engaged with the public through several public forums.

However, at Tuesday night's public hearing regarding the upcoming OCP changes, some of the people in attendance said they didn't realize changes were in store for their own neighbourhoods.

Residents along Fooks Road said they didn't realize the OCP would affect their area.

"I have received nothing in the

mail to suggest there were changes to be made," Bob Garden said. He said when he and his neighbours bought their homes, they were told nothing else would be built there for "10 to 15 years." He asked council to consider a moratorium on building in that area for the remainder of that timeframe, and asked for a buffer zone to be placed along the west side of Aberdeen Road to ensure continued privacy in the future.

The OCP states the following for the Fooks Road/Key Road Properties: "Recognizing the continued demand for single family land by designating this site in northwest Agassiz that is adjacent to existing residential area as Residential -Reserve for Single

Residents from the Woodridge strata on Morrow Road also said they had concerns.

One woman noted that if the area surrounding the strata is zoned multi family residential, the current low-lying bungalows will lose their views, their enjoyment of their yards, and eventual loss in property value.

The public hearing was not a time for discussion between the public and the district staff, so no answers were given to those with concerns. An overview of the

entire OCP process was given by Tina Atva from Urban Systems, who has been working with the district over the last year to gauge the public's needs and desires for growth. The OCP is intended to be a guiding document for development until the year 2040, and measures everything from residential growth to farm use, recreational needs and transportation.

One of those needs will be 500600 new homes by 2040, as the population is expected to grow by 1,200 by then.

One dozen students completed one of the most important rites of passage on Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by a small group of family, friends, and community supporters.

Dressed in cap, gown and smiles, they paraded through the Agassiz Legion Hall to take their seats as high school graduates. But first, their teacher, Ray Steigvilas, gave a brief introduction of these graduates, and outlined some of the tragedies and triumphs they’ve faced along the way. For some, the road was longer than others – the oldest graduate this year is more than 80. And

administrator, Sandy Balascak, reminisced about a year full of “ups and downs.”

Many of the events held by ACE have become traditions, including their regular ACE burger sales, Senior and Teen meals, Christmas breakfast, Erase Bullying Day, and their haunted Halloween house.

In addition to the celebrations held for the grads, Balascak and her students were thrilled about another success.

They’ve gotten permission from the health inspector to bottle and sell their much-loved ACE burger sauce, naming it SAS – Sandy’s ACE Sauce.

“None of this would happen without the phenomenal support we have in the community,” Balascak said. And the proof is in the certificates handed.

Just a few years ago, only four students made it through to graduate. This year, she noted, that number has tripled.

While not all graduates could attend the ceremony, those that did heard from some of their community supporters through heartfelt speeches.

Graduate Al Ptak, a senior student, gave the graduate address.

“I have earned and received quite a few certificates and diplomas during my lifetime,” he said, “but there was always one missing.” But it’s missing no more, he added.

suggestions for the OCP, and read those into the record during the hearing. He stressed the importance of declaring the need for better highways systems through the area, beginning with the now out-of-date Agassiz-Rosedale bridge.

The time has come for a four-lane bridge, he said. The current one doesn't allow for safe pedestrian or bicycling traffic, and traffic bottles up when slow moving farm vehicles need to cross

the river.

Another resident noted that bike lanes need to be mentioned prominently when planning for the future.

Many children and teens avoid traveling on foot and by bike between Harrison and Agassiz because of the lack of safe bike lanes. And those kids are missing out on recreation, socializing, and possible job opportunities in the busy summer community of Harrison Hot Springs.

the designation of the Teacup area as residential reserve, with a mix of single family and multi-family residential uses, as part of a comprehensive neighbourhood plan.

Tom Baldwin said he's "disappointed" in the lack of a solid definition for the area, and was hoping to see it as an agricultural area.

"It's always grown stuff and as the gateway to Agassiz, I think it should continue to grow stuff," Baldwin

said.

A representative from the Ministry of Agriculture read a long letter stating that even though Agassiz is doing a lot of innovative things to encourage agriculture, the OCP could be worded stronger. The letter included numerous points for council to consider prior to adopting the plan, including maintaining the Teacup area as farmland, supporting the retention of larger

properties for the purpose of farming, retaining the research station, and avoiding a "high potential for conflict" by allowing residential areas that abut ALR land.

Kim Sutherland said they make for "incompatible n e i g h b o u r s " because residential homeowners have high expectations that are disturbed by the realities of farming like dust, noises, and smells.

Not all speakers and letter writers at the hearing were against the OCP. "I feel when I've had an issue I've been heard," Jonathon Sutton said. "I see a lot of evidence that these kind of comments are being listened to."

The 298-page Official Community Plan draft is available to view online at the District of Kent website. It will be adopted by council at an upcoming meeting. news@ahobserver.com

Correction There was an error in a story in last week's Observer regarding the closure of C.E. Barry intermediate school.

While the school board voted unanimously in favour of closing the school, the 5-2 vote was in favour of moving the Grade 5 and 6 students to Coquihalla Elementary, and giving the Grade 7 students the option of attending Silver Creek Elementary or Hope Secondary.

Trustees Pat Furness and Tom Hendrickson voted against Grade 7 students going to the high school.

Dairy farmers deserve our support The price being paid for the cruelty exhibited in a video released to the media last week keeps climbing.

It has already rightly cost the jobs of those who allegedly beat dairy cattle at Chilliwack Cattle Sales, and criminal charges are under review.

But the tally hasn’t stopped there.

The reputation of an entire industry, and the thousands of people who work in it, is now being so sullied it is breath-taking.

The anger, hatred and derision displayed in online comments and in social media borders on hysterical.

An online petition spurred dairy behemoth Saputo to force the BC Milk Marketing Board to backtrack on its earlier decision to rescind a suspension of milk collection from the farm. Now, every day thousands of litres of milk is being transported to the United States for destruction.

But that penalty isn’t high enough for the online lynch mob.

It’s already convicted the eight dairy workers of animal cruelty, as well as the people they worked for.

Now it’s branded every dairy farmer in the country as a vicious sadist whose gleeful pursuit of profit comes at the cost of the animals in his or her care.

To be clear, the behaviour portrayed in that video is abhorrent.

But so are the actions of those trying to destroy the lives and livelihoods of so many.

Agriculture is a critical part of Chilliwack’s economy, generating more than $700 million annually in economic activity.

More than half of that can be attributed to dairy farms.

Not only do dairy farmers help feed a hungry world, they create jobs, fuel associated businesses, and insulate us against the vagaries of a fluctuating global economy.

None of this is an excuse for abuse. But to say that all must pay for the actions of a few is such a contortion of decency and justice it defies belief.

Dairy farmers deserve our support. Not only because they need it right now, but because they’ve earned it.

A brief history of teacher demands B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA – A few things have changed since the last all-out teacher strike in B.C. That was just two years ago, when the B.C. Teachers’ Federation was coming off its second-ever voluntary agreement with a 16% raise over five years and what the union termed an “enhanced” signing bonus of $4,000. Even with special teacher-only top-ups, BCTF members almost rejected the last of the government’s bigspending pre-Olympic labour deals signed in 2006.

By 2012, outraged teachers were back on the legislature lawn, howling for another 16%, with backup vocals provided as usual

by HEU, CUPE, BCGEU and other public sector unions that

settled for less. Teachers had just sailed through a crippling global recession with a series of raises, but were oblivious to all that.

Last week the protest venue switched to Vancouver, where both the crowd and the demands looked a bit thinner. The signing bonus target is up to $5,000, but the raise is a mere 8% over five years (compounded, for those who passed math), plus another huge basket of cash disguised as benefit improvements and so forth. Government negotiators put their total compensation demand at 14.5%.

One obvious dodge: they want the bottom two steps of the teacher salary grid dropped.

That’s simply a raise for entrylevel teachers. Admittedly those are rare creatures these days with shrinking enrolment and ironclad seniority rules that allow retired teachers to monopolize substitute work.

Something else that’s changed

since 2012 is that the government has granted the BCTF’s wish to bargain directly with the province.

The education ministry executed a takeover of the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association after last year’s election, and

He’s backed up by longtime labour specialist Lee Doney, whose task is to keep the teacher deal within Treasury Board limits that have defined all other public sector union settlements.

that no mediator is going to come in and “split the baby” as long as the BCTF position is so far beyond the current compensation framework.

Despite constant union complaints of low wages and deteriorating working conditions in B.C. schools, education grads remain lined up around the block hoping to get in.

Why is that?

For those who have been exposed to life outside school for a while, it’s fairly simple. The job market out here in the real world is tough. And here’s how the real world evaluates a teaching job.

Start with 189 working days, each nine hours long as per the accepted definition, and the topheavy seniority list that places the average teacher salary at around $72,000 a year. That works out to $42.32 an hour, plus a suite of benefits that most private sector employees can only dream about, starting with three months of OFFICE HOURS Tues.-Fri. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

I am occasionally lectured by teachers that the job goes far beyond five hours in the classroom and an additional four hours a day preparing and marking. They throw out different estimates, variously defined. Alas, it’s a salaried job, and we salaried employees in the real world don’t waste a lot of time counting hours.

Here’s the work, here’s the deadline, here’s the pay. Take it or leave it.

Consider another union demand that seems to be just another thinly disguised raise. The BCTF wants a large increase in preparation time for elementary school. There are no duties being added here. For this one item, government negotiators calculate the cost to taxpayers at $86.2 million every year by the fifth year of the BCTF proposal.

Mailbag Thankful for help in emergency I would like to thank the person(s) that helped me out on Tuesday morning (June 3) and also the person who took my dog, Diesel, home.

I would also like to thank the police and ambulance personnel.

I was running with my dog around the lagoon and had a medical problem and had a bad fall. I have a concussion and don't remember that day.

Risk training for Fraser Valley farmers A training session on identifying potentially dangerous confined spaces and their hazards is being offered to Fraser Valley farmers and agricultural employers.

The session is being held in Chilliwack next week, and is led by the Farm and Ranch Safety and Health Association (FARSHA).

Since 2000, 18 workers have

lost their lives in confined spaces in B.C. in a number of industries including agriculture. Deaths and injuries in confined spaces are rare but can happen suddenly, often without warning that something is wrong, FARSHA said.

Working in and cleaning feed bins, milk tanks, ventilation systems, pump sheds, fermentation tanks, silos and manure ponds can expose workers to toxic gases

and other hazards that may be present. In high enough concentrations, they can cause death in seconds in enclosed spaces.

The Confined Space Employer Awareness Training is on Monday, June 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hampton Inn at 8050 Lickman Road. Lunch is provided.

Camera stolen from unlocked car in Agassiz Sometime during the early morning hours of June 24, a car was broken into on Mackay Crescent.

Agassiz RCMP said

the thief appears to have found an unlocked door on the vehicle. As a result, a bright blue Canon digital camera was stolen from the

vehicle.

Sgt. Falebrinza is reminding the public not to leave items of value in their vehicles and to make sure you

lock your doors.

Fox Run planning underway This week marks a sad moment in Canadian history. But it’s also a moment that has propelled the country, and the world, forward in searching for a cure for cancer.

Terry Fox was born in 1958 and raised in Port Coquitlam. At the age of 18 he was diagnosed with bone cancer and had to have his right leg amputated above the knee.

Terry was so overcome with the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the “Marathon of

Hope”. He started on April 12, 1980 in Newfoundland and ran a marathon a day for 143 days until he was forced to stop outside Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had reappeared in his lungs. The entire country was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.

The heroic Canadian was gone but his legacy was just beginning.

He ran to raise money for cancer research and now the Terry Fox Research Institute, headquartered in Vancouver, involves over 50 cancer research institutes, hospitals and

universities across Canada. To date more than $650 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held around the world.

art, there is a special honeybee section this year as well.

There are several divisions in the special honeybee section, from beethemed needlework and quilting to honey flavoured muffins and cookies.
