Rimbey town council byelection coming in October

By Treena Mielke Politically minded residents who want to throw their hat into the political ring should give the matter some thought, because nomination day for a seat on Rimbey town council is fast approaching.

At its July 28 meeting, council set nomination day as Sept. 8 and candidates can

file nomination papers at the town office from 10 a.m. until noon.

A byelection is to be held Oct. 6 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

An advanced vote has been tentatively scheduled for Sat. Oct. 4 at Parkland Manor at a time yet to be determined. An institutional

vote for extended care residents will also be held at the extended care facility of the Rimbey Hospital. The date and time of the institutional vote is yet to be determined.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said he is pleased to see advance polls set up at the long-term care as six residents had complained after the previous election that they did not have

an opportunity to vote.

Council has allocated $3,000 from the unrestricted surplus to cover the cost of the byelection and CAO Lucien Cloutier has been appointed as the returning officer.

The vacancy on council came up when Einar Olsen stepped down as a councillor as he was no longer a Rimbey resident.

Council turns down request for advertising dollars

By Treena Mielke Rimbey town council has nixed a request to invest more dollars into a marketing magazine designed to promote the town which was supposed to be released more than a year ago.

And it wants money, previously invested, back.

In Feb. 2013, a publishing agreement was signed between TNC Publications and the town. The agreement stating TNC Publications would produce a marketing magazine to be published in June, 2013 was signed by former CAO Tony Goode.

On April 1, Goode issued a letter which was sent to Rimbey business owners which endorsed the project and encouraged businesses to purchase advertising in the publication.

The magazine was not published in June as promised but town records show $1,395 was paid from town funds in November for an advertisement to be placed in the magazine.

This July, despite the fact TNC Publishing was well past its publication deadline, Erwin Jack, marketing director for TNC Publishing Group approached Lucien Cloutier on his first day on the job as CAO for the Town of Rimbey. He asked for an additional $1,400.

Cloutier told him to approach council with his request. In a subsequent email, Jack stated the publication could go from eight to 12 pages if council augmented the $10,600 already received with another $1,400.

At its July 28 meeting, council voted against sending more money to TNC Publishing. They also voted in favour of requesting that the $1,395 already sent to the company be returned, and backed a statement made by Mayor Rick Pankiw the Rimbey RCMP should be notified of the transactions.

“I think it’s absurb (they would ask for more money),” said Pankiw. “And other communities need to be made aware.”

Pankiw said the previous council was not aware of the transactions made between Goode and TNC Publishing, and Goode had made the decision to endorse the company on his own.

“This is the first I’ve heard of it,” said Coun. Jack Webb.

Former councillor Gayle Rondeel said Goode wasn’t required to bring the matter up before council as it was an administrative decision.

However, she said as manager of the Rimbey Farmer’s Market, she is in the process of writing a formal letter to TNC Publishing to request money back as the magazine did not meet its required deadline.

Chamber of Commerce president Jackie Stratton said she had encouraged the marketing director of TNC Publishing to refund all the Rimbey businesses their money.

“Eight pages is not enough and it would not look good for the Town of Rimbey,” she said.

Stratton said the Chamber wasn’t going to place an ad in the publication originally, but were encouraged by the letter signed by Tony Goode and the fact that other businesses had purchased advertising.

In a telephone interview, July 29, Erwin Jack, marketing director for TNC Publishing said the company plans to print the magazine at eight pages with the funds received.

“We have put too much time and resources into it,” he said. “I know we’re late, but we are obligated to print something.”

Jack did not state when the magazine would be printed.

“I have no idea,” he said.

Further, given that MidAmerican Energy owns numerous generators and transmission lines in the states, how do the regulators propose to police anti-competitive price manipulation?

The sale of AltaLink is complex, but given that Alberta’s ratepayers are the primary investors in this deal, the current proposal to sell AltaLink to MidAmerican should be denied on the premise that this is a very bad deal for the rate paying public! No

private investor would ever invest in a project or business and not expect a return for that investment. Why should the rate paying public be treated any different?

The solution is to retender the sale of AltaLink so that the AUC can evaluate all the proposals. The bidding process should account for foreign tax and other subsidies to create a fair process for Canadian companies. If a foreign company wins the bid, so be it! But, under no circumstance should a foreign company own infrastructure deemed critical to our economy. If AltaLink is to be owned by a foreign company they should be required to sell the critical infrastructure to a Canadian owned company. Most importantly, profits from the sale should be allocated based on a formula that is fair and just to all investors.

Very important to see the difference here! The connotation of the word career seems to be primarily self serving while the connotation of the word vocation suggests serving others.

Have you noticed that in the varied arenas of life, some people excel due to a persistent and committed drive (or calling) with average skill or ability while others with tremendous ability or natural talent, have been known to languish for apparent

lack of commitment or inspiration?

In the political realm, it seems obvious that the public would benefit more from the efforts of a vocational rather than a career politician.

Nigel Farage, the very popular U K I P leader in Great Britain, points out that their current parliament is full of people who have made politics more of an academically driven career than a public service driven vocation. When their career goes bad their politics goes bad to.

Remember when Parliament was full of large characters on both sides of the house? Pearson, Diefenbaker, Martin, the list goes on and on of people of great accomplishment.

People who demonstrated a high level of commitment and function in their respective vocations even before engaging in the (at that time) well respected world of politics.

Right here in Central Alberta we have an example of at least one vocational politician.

Blaine Calkins is one of the

roster of MPs who operates with a philosophical commitment to his constituents and out of respect for the people who elected him, does not promise impossibilities. He has a working man’s credo and he does not expect to be carried along on the backs of his constituents. He speaks of his opponents with generosity and grace and does not engage in the currently popular - ad hominem - discourse.

He readily states that as long as his family enjoys the benefits of his efforts he will continue to serve the public but makes it clearly understood that family is most important.

I have come to know him personally and can confidently say that he is one of the elected public servants of the old, blue-collar tradition who values academic accomplishment but insists the technical and practical credentials of our population be recognized as well.

In little more then a year, we will be called upon to cast our votes in a

general election. I believe the stakes are higher than they have ever been.

I am alarmed at the insidious promotion of foreign values under the guise of multiculturalism and the strident voices of special-interest groups who take advantage of our nation’s accommodating attitude and weak defence of our traditional values and culture.

What a shame to have to use the word defence in this context and in this time in our history. The best defence they say is offence and I have lived long enough to appreciate the veracity of that axiom. Let’s, therefore use the time available to consider the best people and the best plan for our country. Let’s not elect any more media-conscious, career legislators who are more influenced by emotional rhetoric than by our old Western qualities of reason, compassion, guts and good old common sense.

Pastor responds to sale of Bentley United Church, offers use of community church for large gatherings Dear Editor, I am writing after reading last week’s article stating the Bentley United Church will be seeking to sell the church building.

The present church was built in 1965. The actual congregation started sponsored under the Methodist and Presbyterian persuasion in 1899 and 1900, 114 years ago.

Being the pastor of the Bentley Community Church for the past 27 years, I find it discouraging to have to be selling church buildings to survive.

In the past, the Catholic Church was shut down and sold.

The United church will be looking for a place to meet so the tradition can carry on in Bentley.

As a community pastor/leader in Bentley, I have invested my energy and portrayed my desire in promoting our town. Having been a minister in three other areas of Canada, we have chosen Bentley as a wonderful community with hope and great future. Since February 2012, I started writing daily articles called ‘There IS Hope’ and have completed 800 messages built around our community and the plans I believe the Good Lord has for Bentley as found in Jeremiah 29:11.

As a leader spending six years on town council I realized a small community has a tremendous task to try to not be faded out in the shadow of the big growth around us. Some community people have made a choice to attend regular town council meetings as a prayer support to our mayor, council, CAO and staff. We have decided to be there praying for them to be granted wisdom, inspira-

tion and favour in the direction they give.

As the Bentley United Church faces what we all face, we know how difficult it is to keep up the costs of church facilities. Our insurance runs around $700 a month, alone. We

would certainly ask everyone to be in prayer and support of the Bentley United Church as they seek wisdom and direction.

We will also make our facilities available to them if needed for funerals or large gatherings.

On a positive note, we are now are able to have two congregations using our facilities as a large group of German people have immigrated and come to live in our area and so four days a week the large German speaking congregation has found a home in Bentley Community Church.

As a community we have been told it is time for people to share what I call ‘common unity’ and begin a community sharing of facilities.

After some discussion Rimbey town council, at its July 28 meeting, agreed to send three golfers and donate $500 to the FCSS charity golf tournament.

Funding will come from the community events grant program.

Initially, Mayor Rick Pankiw suggested the golfers pay for the tournament out of their own pocket.

“We shouldn’t use taxpayer dollars,” he said.

However, Coun. Jack Webb pointed out paying for the golfers with the $500 was no different that purchasing a table at a community

function and inviting staff or councilors to attend.

“They need golfers,” he said.

Coun. Mathew Jaycox suggested the golfers from the town could choose to help sponsor the tournament in a number of ways.

In her letter to council which was sent out to community members as well, Peggy Makofka, director of Rimbey Family Community Support Services said this year marks the fourth annual Rimbey FCSS Charity Golf Tournament and Fundraiser.

Funeral Chapel continues to provide service

By Treena Mielke Laverne and Michelle Oberhammer, owners of Oberhammer Funeral Chapel will no longer represent any monument companies, but will focus on continuing to provide the best service possible to the families they serve.

The decision came on the heels of a temporary suspension of Oberhammer and his wife Michelle’s funeral director’s licenses by the Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board for failing to deliver monuments in a timely manner.

While Oberhammer said it is unfortunate that the delays in delivery of the monuments resulted in such repercussions, he understands the importance of a regulatory board so consumers have a place to voice their complaints.

“We all, as consumers, have that right.”

Board chairman Cam Davis said the conditions placed on the couple’s licenses are not reflective of the services they provide.

“They have elected not to be part of monument sales,” he said.

Davis stressed the business license of Oberhammer Funeral Chapel Ltd. is not affected.

“There are no constraints on the funeral home,” he said.

He said a business manager will oversee operations until the conditions regarding the suspensions are dealt with.

Nursery school lease extended

By Treena Mielke The patter of little feet at Rimbey Nursery School will continue to be heard at the same room in the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, but at least until more funding is secured, those little feet will be running about on the same flooring.

A request by the Rimbey Nursery School Society Board to council to help with the cost of a new floor which is estimated to cost around $5,700 has been turned down. However, council did not turn a complete deaf ear to the nursery school’s concerns.

Competitive softball player off to Nationals

The pace is demanding and the girls are on the ball field four times a week; twice for practices and twice for games.

Softball is a sport Coston loves.

“I love being outside and the whole concept of the game. We play in Great Chief Park and quite a few people come to the games. At night we play under the lights and that is cool,” she said.

Coston will go into Grade 11 at Rimbey Junior Senior High School in the fall. She is hoping to earn a softball scholarship when she graduates and play college ball in the United States.

The teen will be accompanied by her dad, Kevin Coston, an assistant coach with the Rage and her sister Kelsey when she goes to Nationals.

Her mom, Jamie will not attend the tournament, however, as she will be in Sweden and Finland with Kennedy’s brother, 12-year-old Ethan who will compete in an international hockey tournament.

A Rimbey teen who plays third base for the Red Deer Rage U16 Girls Softball Team will be off to Nationals in Ontario later this month.

Fifteen-year-old Kennedy Kennedy Coston Coston will join her teammates Aug. 13 to 17 to compete in the Nationals in Brampton, Ontario. The Rage is one of 20 teams from across Canada who will compete in the tournament.

The Rage, an A-level competitive softball team in the Girls Prairie Softball League won Provincials last month in Strathmore. The team went six games undefeated, beating a team from Calgary to win the gold medal.

Coston has been playing competitive softball for about four years. She said she tried out for the team in Red Deer as there was no competitive team in Rimbey.

Museum hostess loves studying vintage historical fashions

By June Norvila A seventeen-year-old Bentley teen has found summer employment that fits in with her passion.

She has been looking forward to getting this job for over a year.

Heather McLaren is this summer’s Bentley Museum hostess.

She says she loves history, tends to be a bookworm, and especially likes studying fashions of the past so this job is a good fit for her.

“I like to read and study historical costuming,” she says. “I tend to be a homebody and not a social butterfly (so the quiet time at the museum doesn’t bother her).”

She admits she has a bit of her own historical collection with a complete set of children’s encyclopedias from the 1800’s.

Her job entails a variety of work including doing the upkeep outside in the yard, dusting, cleaning, and general upkeep, as well as greeting visitors and supplying tourist information. She expects to help with the fair and rodeo parade float the museum annually enters and to help to

dress some of the new mannequins the museum just got delivered.

Her favourite area of the museum is the old wedding and other vintage dresses. The museum now has a large glassed in display area with a number of well-dressed mannequins, both male and female.

“I have had nothing but positive feedback about the museum so far,” she says. “Some people are surprised at how much such a smalltown museum has.”

McLaren will be at the museum to answer questions and guide visitors on tours around the facility until after the September Labor Day weekend when she returns to Bentley school to attend Grade 12.

“I have always been fascinated by the human mind,” she says so after completing Grade 12 she says she may go on into psychology or social work related studies.

The Bentley Museum is housed in three separate buildings: the 1924 Pico farmhouse, the Agriculture Building, and their new largest building that has climate control. All are

open to the public during their regular hours. It is located at 4929-51 Avenue with an antique windmill marking the spot.

The museum’s volunteer board holds work bees each Wednesday morning to try to keep up

The Rimbey and District Horticultural Group’s rose and lily show was a lovely testimonial to the talented green thumbs of Rimbey and area.

Tom Turnbull completely took over as winner in the lilies (over 20 category), winning first, second and third place.

It is obvious that for Turnbull and his wife, Sandy the beautiful lily has become their flower of choice.

“It’s a hobby gone mad,” said Sandy Turnbull, of her husband’s lily gardens.

The couple lives on a farm north of Bentley, a picturesque location that takes a casual observer by surprise with its delightful lily gardens.

The Turnbulls sell lilies and bulbs and also have a U-pick Saskatoon operation and berry pickers can take home an ice cream pail of the delicious berries for $5.

Blaze: Arson is suspected in a July 24 fire that destroyed a cabin located northwest of Rimbey in a wooded area. Rimbey Fire Department responded to the fire call, but was unable to save the structure. Some nearby trees were also destroyed.

“It is Tom that does all this,” she said waving her hand across the huge gardens. “I am just his gopher.”

A mother and daughter took first and second prize for lilies in the under 20 category.

“My mom encourages me to enter (the rose and lily show) all the

time,” said Mary Olson, who won first prize. I did win over my mom,” she said with a chuckle. “It was a surprise to both of us.”

Grace Den Engelsen, Olson’s mother, was also pleased with her win.

“I do like lilies and I have a nice little lily garden. You can get them in so many colours.”

In the rose on a stem category, Joy Bruca took first, the Rimbey Historical Society won second and Irene Kurta-Lovell took third.

Gail Hood, president of the

Rimbey and District Horticultural Group said there were 35 lily entries and seven rose entries.

“We really appreciated the historical society allowing us to have it at the school at the park this year.”

The horticultural group is holding a competition for the best community garden and judging will take place on Aug. 12 at the community gardens at 10 p.m. The Rimbey and District Horticultural Bench Show will be held Aug. 15 and 16. The show is open to the public on Aug. 16.

Charges pending regarding Pit Bull attack Continued from Page 3 The Mountie stopped the car and found the driver had consumed far more than his share of wobbly pops before he got behind the wheel. The 21-year-old man from west of town refused to provide a breath sample and has been criminally charged and had his vehicle seized and impounded.

Pit Bull attacks A young lady was out enjoying a run in the sun at Meridian Beach and was attacked by a Pit Bull dog that was out for a walk with its owner on the same path. The jogger moved over to allow for lots of room for the dog on its leash to get by but the canine overpowered its owner and lunged out and bit the lady. The victim received medical

treatment at hospital and was later released to tend to her wound. Police are investigating the matter and charges pending.

Truck stolen During the night of July 22nd, unknown culprit(s) stole a 2005 Ford F550 truck from a local dealership in town. The white truck has an orange coloured light bar and a bucket on a boom. Police continue to investigate this case. To date, the truck has not been located.

Theft from unlocked vehicles Police continue to receive countless complaints from citizens reporting they have had their laptop, iPod, wallet or purse stolen from their unlocked car sometime during the night. These crimes have all been opportunistic criminals

preying on unlocked vehicles. Recently, your local detachment conducted a plain clothes operation at night doing foot patrols throughout the town.

Two young ladies from the Edmonton area were arrested red handed going from car to car during the night. Apparently, folks in the city are better about locking up their belongings than we are in small towns.

When officers interviewed the two midnight shoppers they stated that it was “easy pickens hitting the small towns.... until they were arrested here”. Please remove all valuables from unattended vehicles and lock the doors at all times.

Nursery school Lease Continued from page 9 At its July 28 meeting, council agreed to extend the nursery school’s two-year lease to five years, meaning it won’t expire until 2019.

Council was not, however, receptive to picking up the tab for all or part of the renovations for the flooring that are needed.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said such a move would set precedence for other groups who lease town owned buildings.

“It could be opening up a can of worms that I’m not sure we want to open,” said

Pankiw.

The mayor added the matter would be brought up again during budget.

“We will discuss it at budget time, but if you can come up with the money, do it.”

Rimbey Nursery School chairman Aimee Heilemann said the board is happy with council’s decision.

“We love the space we are in and we are very happy the way it worked out.” Fundraising will continue to help replace the flooring which has holes and stains in it and seems to be lifting in some areas, she said.
