Fire closes some area roads Submitted An Area Restriction Order is in effect immediately for areas near the White Tail Brook fire, approximately 10 kilometres east of the village of Canal Flats. This restriction is being put in place to protect the safety of firefighting personnel and the public.

A map of this area restriction can be found at the following link: http://bit.ly/1qM4kmL The following forest service roads leading to the area are now closed: * The main Whiteswan Forest Service Road from Highway 93/95 junction to the 32-km marker. * The main Kootenay Forest Service Road from the 3-km marker to 34.5-km (White-Rock Forest Service Road and Kootenay Forest Service Road junction). * The entire WhiteRock Forest Service Road.

BC Parks has evacuated Whiteswan Provincial Park and it will be closed until further notice.

The White Tail Brook fire covers an estimated 600 hectares and no structures or communities are at risk at this time.

The Wildfire Management Branch is conducting a full response to this fire, including multiple helicopters and airtankers supporting over 50 personnel on the ground.

A Type 2 Incident Management Team will assume command of this fire on Thursday, July 31. This transition will bring increased support staff to help manage the wildfire, which was discovered on July 27.

With hot and dry conditions forecast through next week and the potential for more thunderstorms on the long weekend, the Southeast Fire Centre is urging the public to be extra cautious in the backcountry.

College of the Rockies signs Kimberley SunMine agreement

College of the Rockies President and CEO David Walls looks forward to collaborating on the innovative SunMine in Kimberley.

CEO David Walls is pleased to be collaborating with the City of Kimberley, Teck,

and the EcoSmart Foundation on the SunMine project in Kimberley.

With over 4,000 solar modules generating 1.05 Megawatts of energy, SunMine will be Western Canada’s largest solar project.

SunMine is situated on reclaimed land on the former Teck Sullivan Mine site, within Kimberley city limits.

The energy-generating project is community owned, distinct and well suited to capitalize on Kimberley’s clear and sunny conditions.

College of the Rockies, having earned eligibility for research grants through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), can provide access to funding opportunities that

would otherwise be unavailable to the project.

“Collaboration between the College, governments and the private and non-profit sectors provides the greatest opportunity for benefit,” said Walls.

“The College looks forward to working with the City of Kimberley and EcoSmart in exploring training and applied research opportunities together.

College of the Rockies will be seeking opportunities to engage our students in projects like SunMine.

Due to the investment in trades capital funding over the past few years by the Provincial government, we have had the opportunity to expand our curriculm to include solar technology for some of

our programs.

The Sun Mine will provide opportunities for experiential learning for these programs.”

“Kimberley citizens directly endorsed this project and we’re proud to deliver on a bold and innovative initiative,” said Kimberley’s Mayor, Ron McRae. “This project aligns with the community’s values associated with environment, community and a history of innovation and resilience. Local service clubs donate $1,500 to D.A.R.E. Submitted Three Cranbrook service clubs donated a total of $1,500 during the 2013-14 school year to help Local RCMP teach the internationally recognized Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program to local Grade 5 or 6 school children.

Following are the three clubs that made contributions to cover cost of the students learning materials: The Rotary Club of Cranbrook ($500), The Kin Club of Cranbrook ($500) and the Fraternal Order of Eagles ($500).

RCMP Sgt. Gus Papagiannis, who oversees D.A.R.E. program in BC said that over 200 police officers teach D.A.R.E. each year to thousands of BC school children to equip them with the critical thinking and life skills necessary to choose a drug-free life. While police officers teach the program, the cost of the student learning materials is covered by community donations so the program can be offered free to all students.

Some Facebook thoughts

by Brian Coombs This editorial started as something completely different. Like pretty much every subject, once you start probing beneath the surface a different story emerges.

Originally, this space was going to be dedicated to a rant against the inherent narcissism of Facebook.

While Facebook pages from institutions like your favourite weekly newspaper generally just point you to interesting news tidbits, the private pages are a different kettle of fish altogether.

Pictures of fun vacations, people sharing inspirational quotes, users condemning various ne’er dowells of society are the mainstay of this vehicle of expression.

Basically, it is filled with things that make the user look like their lives, and by extension, themselves, look really good. Rarely, if ever, do you see some ‘real’ moments on these pages. As a case in point, a user could have just been fired from their job, had a huge argument with their spouse, found a suspicious boil in an embarrassing spot and finished their day by taking a picture of their cat being cute. What, of all those things, do you think ends up on Facebook?

And then I read an article written by David Wong, which I related to my thoughts on Facebook, that talked about life philosophy. It was an exercise and well worth doing, although the result is somewhat mixed.

You’ll see what I mean.

First, list off the things that are most important to you, not including people. For example: 1) Freedom of expression 2) Equality 3) Making a living wage 4) My country 5) Education Now, write down five things that you did yesterday. Organize them in importance by time spent. For example: 1) Working at my job 8 hours.

2) Watching TV - 2 hours.

3) Updating my Facebook page and checking friends pages - 1 hour 4) Mowing the lawn 1/2 hour 5) Taking a shower - 20 minutes.

Here’s where it gets interesting. On the first list, put the words “I believe in” in front of each point. What you end up with is your expressed philosophy of life. Pretty cool, huh?

Now go to your second list and put “I believe in” in front of each of those points.

This is your actual philosophy. And this is true because we all know that it is not what you say that defines you, but what you do.

Pretty depressing huh?

And that, is what most personal Facebook pages are; a list of things people say, completely separate from their reality. In other words, and to echo what Facebook detractors have been saying all along, those pages are a load of shallow, self-congratulating bunk. In some cases, experts have proposed that Facebook actually hurts worthwhile

charities because there is something in the human brain that equates hitting the “Like” button on an organization’s page with giving an actual donation.

But hold on. Life is hard. Most of us work at jobs that aren’t particularly fulfilling and besides the occasional bit of exercise or fun weekend, a lot of what we do is pretty boring.

Is it really fair to say that this is your actual philosophy of life?

I don’t think so. I think that we all need something to aspire to. If that picture on Facebook of a guy going over the rapids in a kayak with the acronym YOLO underneath it inspires you to get out your old canoe and spend the day on a lake, you will be better for doing it. Even if all you get is a good laugh, or see something that makes you pause and consider a different way of thinking, or donating to a good cause, that is a beautiful thing.

While it is true that what we do defines us, what we say can inspire us. And that is the human condition in a nutshell. We may not be doing what we want, or what is good for us, but there should always be the option to dream of something better.

That said, check out the Kootenay Advertiser on Facebook. It’s got a good mix of news and fun. Like us and we’ll like you right back.

Atheletes and coaches of Kimberley and Cranbrook’s Special Olympic Alpine ski team would like extend a huge shout out to Chalet GM for sponsoring their recently held 1st annual awards dinner. This was the culmination of a very sucssessfull 2013 / 2014 season with all six of the competitive stream atheletes quailifing to attend the BC winter games in Kamloops this upcoming season, there they will compete to qualify for the national games in Newfoundland the fallowing seaso for a chance to qualify for the world games next held in Austria 2017/18. This team has sent atheletes to most of the world games that have been held since the teams inception. Wish them luck.

Jaws drop. If you put it in valet mode, rpms are limited to 4,000. Gosh, I really hope I can take the red key…

This Matrix-like conundrum is a good one to have. Take the safer route (black key) if you’d rather ease off on harnessing the gargantuan horsepower of the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. It’s the most powerful production Chrysler V8, as well as the most powerful production muscle car to date, so it needs to be treated with respect.

But then again, the red key will allow me to tame this muscled feline one shift at a time, whether through the 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic.

Looks like the decision has been made for me. Red key is sitting pretty in the centre console. And it’s in track mode.

The 2014 Honda CRV could be the go-to vehicle to get everything on your to-do list done.

Looks:

Redesigned in 2012, this CRV continues to receive awards for design, practicality, and function. Very clean bodylines, swept back rear windows with taillights that contour the body. The new shape gives the appearance of a tall stance but the ground clearance remains the same.

The three-bar grille looks very good and I like how it cuts into the headlights.

The cabin is surprisingly spacious and comfortable. All the gauges are well defined and easy to reach. The LX comes with a 6-way manual adjustment driver’s seat that is heated. The EX-L and Touring edition comes with a 10-way power adjustable with power lumbar support and the rear seats on all models are 60/40 split that easily folds down independently to provide more cargo space. LX and EX models feature a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3/Windows media audio playback with four speakers.

The EX-L and Touring models have a 360-watt premium audio system with seven speakers and MP3/ Windows media playback compatibility with a subwoofer, the Sirius XM satellite radio is available with a subscription. The intelligent multi-information display features a SMS text messaging function for compatible cell phones. This feature can read incoming texts aloud over the audio system.

Safety features on the CRV including; front side air bags with passenger side occupant position detection system, dual stage, dual threshold front airbags. Childproof rear doors, active front seat head restraints, three point rear seat belts, three-point

The engine is a 2.4 litre, 16

valves, DOHC, I-VTEC 4 cylinder that produces 185 hp and 163 lb ft of torque with a five-speed automatic transmission, a very reliable combination for this size of vehicle.

Front-wheel drive is standard on the LX and EX models with the option to upgrade to realtime four-wheel drive, while the Touring edition comes standard with real-time fourwheel drive. Hill-start assist

helps prevent the vehicle from backwards when it is stopped on a hill. Econ mode comes on with a push of the button, this makes the engine and other non-essential functions go from efficient to ultraefficient.

Betty was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed contributing to her community. She was a person of artistic talent which can be seen in the stained glass windows she created for the Historic Waldo Church in Baynes Lake. She was a lover of nature. Betty will be greatly missed by all.

STRIBBELL: Dennis Stribbell passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2014 after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Dennis, known as Willy throughout the Elk Valley, was a long time resident of Elkford after growing up in Meyronne, Saskatchewan. He worked for over 25 years at Fording Coal and was an active member of the United Steelworkers Local 7884.

He is survived by his mother, Alice Stribbell; brother Howard and Jo Stribbell and family (Howard and Doreen, Terry and Corinne, Derek and Renee, Kodee); sister Brenda Harrison and family (Steve, Stefanie); sister Pattie Rude and family (Dwayne, Sharona); and brother Gary and Pattie Stribbell and family (Tom, Landon). Dennis was an uncle to 10 nieces and nephews and a great uncle to 12 more great-nieces and great-nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Norman Stribbell (2013) and his siblings, Kenneth, Sharon and Alice.

Dennis enjoyed riding his Harley with friends and was an avid hunter. He took great pride in being a member of the mine rescue team. He was committed to improving the lives of miners in the valley through his work with the Steelworkers. Dennis’ long fought battle with MS would be best honoured through a donation to the MS Research Society.

The family would like to thank all of the people through the MS Society, the different care facilities and hospitals, and his friends in the Elk Valley who supported Dennis during his battle with MS. • Full Time and Casual Residence Workers – working with individuals with Autism and/or Cerebral Palsy, fully assisting with personal care and with limited verbal communication skills. The youth will be in the residence on alternating weeks; one youth to care for per week. Our residential resources are 24 hour live in shifts.

One person may be able to work both PT Wrap Around Family Support Worker and PT FASD Worker positions for full time hours if they have the qualifications, skills and abilities to work both positions.
