It's been a steady and impressive return to the top for the Kigoos, who in 2012 came agonizingly close to winning their first provincial team championship since 1991—finishing second and within 300 points of White Rick Guppies—before slipping back to 13th last year. Batara is particularly encouraged this year by the Kigoos' depth, which is reflected in the strong divisions that top the region. She anticipates several of the swimmers in these divisions will contend for relay honors this weekend. Division 1 boys Thomas Chen, Zachary Kennedy and Aden Pang have already swam provincial qualifying times, while Division 2 girls Lianna Holz, Jasmine Ren and Elizabeth Lee have done the same. The Division 4 boys' group is also strong and performed well at provincials last year, winning all the relays with several individual medals as well. "I think we'll see something similar this year (from the latter group)," says Batara. "Vincent Lee and Peiyu Song in particular place high in the provincial rankings, so I'm excited to see what that group will do." The Kigoos also appear to have boosted its senior team, with its Division 5 girls (Dakota Chan, Tamara Yoshida, Roselyn Thom, and Kaitlyn Lam), Division 6 girls (Elizabeth Suen, Kaitlin Watson, and Anita Rudakov) and Division 6 boys (Brandon Lam, Ryan Lam, Silas Tsui, Eric Chang and Frankie Lui) all capable of medalling. "I'm excited about a couple of swimmers who either didn't attend regionals or provincials last year," says Batar. "Chan only swam one day of regionals and provincials last year due to field hockey nationals and so didn't swim her best event, the 100 backstroke. Suen also didn't attend provincials last year, but had broken records at regionals, and Lui, who didn't swim at all last season, has always been one of the region's if not the province's top breaststrokers alongside Brandon Lam." Additionally, several newcomers fuel the hope. Many are already at the top of their events, including Thomas Chen (Division 1), Jasmine Ren and Lianna Holz (Division 2), David Hyman (Division 3), Teaghan Frid (Division 4) and Jacob Lee (Division 5). One of the Kigoos' senior coaches, Andre Kudaba, will be racing this weekend. He was one of the top swimmers in Canada before shifting his focus to water polo and coaching. "Overall, I have seen such great work ethic this year, on the part of our coaches and our swimmers, so I'm fairly certain this will translate into some incredible swims," says Batara. "We hope to qualify as many swimmers and relay teams to provincials (Aug. 11 to 17 in Kamloops) as possible. But most of all, I just want all of our swimmers to race hard, have fun, make new friends, and see all of their hard work pay off, because they deserve it."
