EMERSON DRIVE ON OPENING NIGHT Be sure to wear your cowboy boots and hat on the opening night of the 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival. One of country music’s most popular acts over the past decade, Emerson Drive, will be on the main stage Wednesday, Aug. 6. Emerson Drive is presented by Peters Bros. Construction. “This is the probably the biggest act we’ve ever had at Peach Festival,” said Entertainment Director Bill Kolter. “They are arguably the most successful band in Canadian country music history.” Besides widespread success in Canada, Emerson Drive has charted nine hits in the United States, including “Moments,” which reached number one on the U.S. country charts. The band has earned countless honors including: Three Billboard Magazine Awards; four Canadian Country Music Association Awards; 20 Academy of Country Music nominations; and a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Country Duo or Group. “Wake Me Up,” a collaboration with Canadian singer/ songwriter Tebey, is currently in the top 10 on country charts. Kolter said, “You would expect to pay $40 or $50 to see Emerson Drive, but not at Peach Festival. Thanks to Peters Bros. Construction, admission is free so everyone can afford to see this great band.” The Emerson Drive tour is booked by Penticton’s Invictus Entertainment Group.

P
eachfest is truly a special event. At a time when festivals come and go, seldom does any event last for 67 years. And it is extremely rare to find a festival that survives, in fact thrives, with no admission charge. Western Canada’s largest free festival is made possible by hundreds of people. The sponsors, led by Peters Bros. Construction, make it possible for us to attract top-name acts like Emerson Drive, Trooper and the Stampeders. If you saw these bands anywhere else, you would pay $25 to $50…. for each band. Then there are the vendors in the parks; Shooting Star
Amusements; and all three levels of government; who contribute. But, the most important group is the volunteers. The volunteer Board of Directors works yearround to ensure Peach Festival maintains its proud tradition. And for five days in August, hundreds of others donate their time so everyone can enjoy free, family fun for five days. In an era when few things are free, take a minute to thank a volunteer, a vendor or a sponsor for making this event possible. We hope you go home with some great memories from Peach Festival.

ednesday, Aug. 6 is not only the opening day of the 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival... it is also London Drugs Seniors Day. Peachfest Director Dayle Millington said they have lined up some great entertainment for seniors. “We invite everyone to Okanagan Lake Park for some free entertainment, fun and snacks.” Seniors Day officially kicks off with bingo at 1:30 p.m. Then at 2 p.m., Miss Penticton contestants will be serving free cake and refreshments. Entertainment on the Peters Bros. Main Stage will be provided by Penticton’s own Mandy Cole and Aidan and Mandy Aidan Mayes.

ne of Canadian country music’s rising stars will be on stage opening night at the 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival. Livy Jeanne will perform Aug. 6, just prior to legendary Canadian country group Emerson Drive. This will be the third visit to the South Okanagan for the young Albertan artist. In 2013, she was the opening act for Alan Jackson and earlier this year she performed as part of the Young Guns Tour. “We are excited to have Livy performing at Peach Festival,” said Entertainment Director Bill Kolter. “She has incredible talent. She has the ability to combine country twang with pop polish.” She released the heralded EP, “Under the Radar,” in 2012. Now armed with a fresh bunch of tracks, “I Wanna Fall in Love; Any Other Way; and Something New;” have received widespread airplay on Canadian country radio. “I want my sound to be one that will make a seven-yearold want to dance, but at the same time will appeal to people my mom’s age who like that heartfelt, honest take on country music,” Livy said.

TRAMPOLINE WALL WILL BE A HIGHLIGHT
T
here will be some high-flying thrills at the 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival. The Trampoline Wall and Power Track Show, presented by the Lakeside Resort, will perform daily in Okanagan Lake Park during Peachfest. The show is produced by world-renowned Milord Entertainment, based in Quebec. Milord is the same company that brought the Flying Fools high dive show to Peach Festival in 2011. Yves Milrod , the president of Milord Entertainment, has worked with Cirque de Soleil and currently has five touring acts throughout the North America. To bounce on a trampoline while using a wall is comparatively new, according to Milrod. “This system allows the acrobat to carry out performances where he may walk on a vertical wall, enter by a window, land on the roof and bounce back on to the trampoline,” he said. The second part of the show, the Power Track, is a 40-foot trampoline which accommodates a wide variety of thrilling acrobatics. “The trampoline show is great family entertainment,” said Peach Festival Entertainment Director Bill Kolter. “You won’t believe what these people can do on a trampoline.”

he most popular band in Penticton Peach Festival history is returning for an encore performance. Trooper, presented by Peters Bros. Construction, will be on the main stage Thursday, Aug. 7. In their only previous appearance at Peachfest, in 2011, Trooper attracted a record crowd, estimated at 7,000 people, to Okanagan Lake Park. Peach Festival Entertainment Director Bill Kolter said he gets asked more often about Trooper’s return than any act in the 20-plus years he has been involved with the festival. “Every few days, for the past three years, someone asks me when we are bringing back Trooper,” Kolter said. “Thanks to Peters Bros, they are coming back…with no admission charge.” Trooper is considered Canada’s

Greatest Party Band. Universal Music calls them “one of Canada’s top selling bands of all time.” Trooper has released 10 studio albums which have earned multiple platinum and gold awards. Their greatest hits album, “Hot Shots,” is six-times-platinum and one of Canada’s greatest selling albums. Trooper recorded 17 hits singles including “Raise A Little Hell,” which has become an anthem at sporting events throughout North America. Their other hits include: We’re Here For a Good Time; Boys in the Bright White Sports Car; Good Ol’ General Hand Grenade; Santa Maria; Two for the Show; and Baby Woncha Please Come Home. “You know you always have a good time when you go to see Trooper,” Kolter said.
TWO NEW EVENTS DOWNTOWN

The Downtown Penticton Association is sponsoring two new events this year in conjunction with Peach Festival. The first event, “Backstreet is Peachy,” will be held on the night prior to the official start of Peachfest…Tuesday, Aug. 5. From 5-9 p.m., on Backstreet Boulevard, there will be live entertainment, vendors and a wide variety of peach-themed food and beverages. Then on the opening day of Peachfest (Aug. 6), the first annual Peach Bin Race is scheduled on Main Street. Teams will race with decorated peach bins in the 100 Block of Main Street, at 12 noon, on Wednesday. Proceeds from the race will go to charity. All the decorated Peach Bin race cars will be on display at the Backstreet is Peachy event. “The race will be a lot of fun for participants and spectators,” said DPA Executive Director Kerri Milton. “It will be a great kickoff to Peachfest.” To register a team, or for further information, contact the DPA at 493-8540. Entry fee is $50 per team.
HUGE CROWDS EXPECTED We are expecting huge crowds for Peach Festival this year. Our advice… arrive early, visit one of our vendors for dinner and find a great spot. If you can’t get to the park early, all of the evening entertainment will be shown on the Tim Hortons Giant Screen.

The fourday square dance festival, held at the Seniors Dropin Centre, on South Main Street, goes from Wednesday, Aug. 6 to Saturday, Aug. 9. More than 500 dancers of all ages, from throughout Western Canada and the United States, will be on hand. What keeps them coming back every year? “It is the fun, the opportunity to meet new friends, the mental and physical stimulation and the universality which modern square dance offers,” according to Director Beth McGifford. Organizers expect more than two dozen callers and 12 round dance cuers on the program. Spectators are welcome for the morning and afternoon dances, from Wednesday to Friday.

SANDCASTLE COMPETITION AT SKAHA BEACH
T
he 31st annual RONA Sandcastle Competition, held in conjunction with Peach Festival, is scheduled Thursday, Aug. 7, at Skaha Beach. The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Kids teams are allocated one hour, while all other teams are allowed two hours to complete their sandcastle before judging begins. Prize money is awarded to: Corporate team, $500 donated to the charity of choice; $200 for Familyfriends; $200 for youth; and $100 for kids. he Penticton Peach Festival will host its first ‘Tribute Night’ on Friday, Aug. 8. Forever Young (Neil Young tribute), High Voltage (AC/ DC tribute) and U4 (U2 tribute) will perform on the Peters Bros. main stage. Peachfest Entertainment Director Bill Kolter said the festival has booked tribute bands before, “but never an entire evening of tribute bands,” he said. “It will be quite a night.” U4 is considered the number one U2 tribute band in North America. They cover all eras from the legendary “Joshua Tree,” to “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.” U4’s incredible vocals, musicianship, sound, costumes and staging combine for a memorable experience. Prior to performing at Peach Festival, U4 will be on stage at Edmonton Klondike Days. This will be the fourth appearance at Peach Festival for High Voltage, “and people keep asking us to bring them back,” said Kolter. “Music fans from 15 to 65 love AC/DC. And High Voltage does a great job covering all of their hits.” Forever Young is making their second appearance at Peachfest. Kevin Foley, as Neil Young, and his six-piece band are based in the South Okanagan. And Foley sounds just like the real thing.

PLENTY OF EXCITEMENT AT PENTOWN THROWDOWN

op skateboarders and BMX riders from throughout Western Canada will compete in the second annual Pentown Throwdown during Peach Festival. On Saturday, professionals will compete for $3,300 in prize money at the park on West Riverside Drive. Peach Festival Director Scott Mayhew said that several sponsors have made it possible for the event to grow into one of the highlights of Peachfest. “Businesses like Burger 55, Boonstock and Burnco have stepped up to sponsor the event…and attract the top riders,” Mayhew said. There will be a registration kickoff event on Friday, Aug. 8, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Burger 55. Everyone who registers that night will receive a free Throwdown Burger. “We’ll also have some great prizes to give away on Friday night,” Mayhew said. On Saturday, action will run from 1-8 p.m. There will be three classes: Amateur skateboard, BMX and pro skateboard. The Bowl Event, which was a huge crowdpleaser last year, will be the final event on Saturday. All winners will be announced on the Peters Bros. Main Stage, in Okanagan Lake Park, at 9 p.m. On Sunday, the BC Action Sports Association will
hold its BMX event. Top pro riders will take part in that competition. The Throwdown is held in conjunction with the Pentagon Board Shop, Freedom The Bike Shop and the City of Penticton.

TWO PARADES DURING PEACH FESTIVAL

wo parades will be among the highlights of the 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival. The largest parade in the B.C. Interior, the Peters Bros. Grand Parade, is scheduled Saturday, Aug. 9. About 100 entries from throughout Western Canada and the Northwest United States will participate. The parade starts on Main Street, at Pen Hi, at 10 a.m. The parade route goes down Main Street to Lakeshore, then continues along Lakeshore to the SS Sicamous. The Seattle All City Band, which is always one of the crowd favorites, is back for a fourth consecutive year. The 120-member group is considered one of the premier marching bands in Washington State. Prior to the start of the parade, at 9:30 a.m.,

the Vancouver Police Motorcycle Drill Team will thrill spectators along the route. On Sunday, at 11:30 a.m., the annual Downtown Penticton Association Kiddies Day Parade starts on Main Street, at Wade Avenue. Hundreds of youngsters will ride, march and walk along Main Street to Okanagan Lake Park. Prizes will be awarded in various age categories. Registration starts at 11:00 a.m. in the parking lot on the corner of Wade Avenue and Martin Street. Immediately following the parade, the A&W Kiddies Day entertainment gets under way in Okanagan Lake Park with Tony Prophet and Uncle Chris the Clown.

ne of the most successful groups in Canadian music history will be headlining at the 67rh annual Penticton Peach Festival. The Stampeders will be on the main stage Saturday, Aug.
The original trio of Ronnie King, Rich Dodson and Kim Berly will be making their first-ever appearance at Peach Festival. The Stampeders have recorded nine gold and platinum albums. Their success started with the single, “Carry Me” in 1970. The following year, “Sweet City Woman,” dominated music charts around the world. “Sweet City Woman” reached number one in Canada and Europe, and number eight on the U.S. Billboard music chart. It totaled more than three million copies in worldwide sales. By the time their chart-topping days had ended, The Stampeders had recorded 10, top 10 hits in Canada and three hits in the U.S. “Hit the Road Jack,” a collaboration with legendary DJ Wolfman Jack, also reached number one in Canada. “We’re really excited to have The Stampeders at
Peachfest,” said Entertainment Director Bill Kolter. “Thanks to our sponsors, including Peters Bros. Construction, we can provide top-notch entertainment with no admission charge.” The Stampeders won 3 Juno Awards and were nominated as Canada’s top group four times. In 2011, they were awarded the Society of Composers, Artists and Musical Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) Lifetime Achievement Award. The group’s other hits include: Wild Eyes, Oh My Lady, Minstrel Gypsy, Ramona and Playin’ in the Band.

he 11th annual Sheila Bishop Memorial Wooden Bat Slopitch Tournament will be held Aug. 9 and 10 as part of the 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival. Up to 16 teams are expected to play in the tourney at Lions Park. Tournament Chairman Paul Borba said the co-ed event takes players back to the early days of slopitch. “Just like the old days…everyone uses a wooden bat,” he said. One of the highlights of the tourney is the home run hitting contest on Sunday. There will also be a silent auction, raffles and a beverage garden. All proceeds from the tournament go to local charities. In the first 10 years, more than $29,000 has been donated. Spectators are welcome.

GREAT GROUPS RETURN TO PEACH FESTIVAL ON SUNDAY KILLARNEY

It is rare that the Penticton Peach Festival invites headliners back in consecutive years. But, Killarney is returning for a fourth time , to end the festival, on Sunday, Aug. 10. And just before Killarney, Phonix will take the stage for their third appearance at Peachfest. “There is no better way to end Peachfest than with Killarney,” said Entertainment Director Bill Kolter. “People of all ages love the band.” Killarney emigrated from Ireland to Canada in the mid1970s and quickly became one of the most popular touring bands in the country. At one point, Killarney had a weekly television show on CBC-TV. As they settled on the West Coast, they began playing regularly at the Blarney Stone, in Vancouver’s Gastown. In fact, they played at the Blarney Stone for more than 25 years… until retiring from that gig in 2013. The beautiful harmonies of brothers John and Mike

Cronin, along with John Lynch, provide the group with a wide variety of musical options from rock ‘n roll to Irish classics to modern-day dance tunes. John Cronin’s voice on Neil Diamond songs, “sounds like the real thing.” One of Western Canada’s premier cover bands, The Phonix, will be on stage earlier on Sunday evening. With male and female lead singers, along with a threepiece horn section, The Phonix put on a tremendous stage show. “They can play everything from r&b to rock to funk,” said Kolter. “They are very talented musicians.”

he 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival provides five days of free family fun. But, the final day of the festival, on Sunday, Aug. 10, has something special for children. The Sunday festivities get under way at 11:30 a.m. with the annual Downtown Penticton Association Kiddies Parade. Youngsters gather in the parking lot at the corner of Martin and Wade to be judged for best costumes in various age categories. The Vancouver Travelling Band and Penticton Fire Dept. then leads hundreds of youngsters down Main Street to Okanagan Lake Park where the A&W Kiddies Day festivities get under way. Immediately after the costume prizes are presented, at 12 noon, the entertainment beings with well-known children’s performers,

A&W Kiddies Day Director Rebecca Ogden said it will be a fantastic day for kids…and their parents. “We have more fun and activities planned than in any previous year,” Ogden said. “We’re sure that every youngster will have a great time.” Free activities in the park include face painting, games, a petting zoo and the Trampoline Wall Show, presented by the Lakeside Resort. Other activities (admission charged) include bouncing castles and live pony rides. In nearby Rotary Park, Shooting Star Amusements will be thrilling families. When the A&W Kiddies Day concludes at 3 p.m., regular entertainment returns to the Peters Bros. Paving Main Stage until 11 p.m.

ABORIGINAL VILLAGE IN GYRO PARK
O
ne of the highlights of the 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival will be the seventh annual Aboriginal Cultural Village (ACV) in Gyro Park. The ACV has expanded this year from two to three days…and the hours of operation have also been extended. The village will be open Friday, Aug. 8 from 3:30 to 11 p.m.; Saturday from 12 noon to 11 p.m.; and Sunday from 12 noon to 5 p.m. MC is Jordan Coble. Following the ACV opening ceremonies on Friday, there will be traditional Okanagan dancing and songs…highlighting the Okanagan Nation. The focus shifts to youth in the evening with a performance by Skookem Sound and a DJ. On Saturday, the Pow Wow Grand Entry is scheduled at 1 p.m. Director Elizabeth Bent said that while Friday’s performances will
be traditional dancing, the weekend Pow Wow will feature contemporary dancing with colorful regalia in various categories. “We’re hoping for at least 100 dancers over the weekend,” Bent said. “It will be the largest Aboriginal Cultural Village ever held in conjunction with the Peach Festival.” Drumming throughout the weekend with be provided by High Water, from Keremeos. High Water recently performed in California and is considered one of the top drumming groups in the B.C. Interior. Special guests at the ACV include Metis jigger Maddy McCallum, who will perform on Friday night. “It will be great entertainment for the entire family,” Bent said. ACV sponsors include Fortis BC and the Penticton Indian Band. There is no admission charge.
