A new federal law requiring First Nations bands to post their financial statements, remuneration and expenses online went into effect this week — with some shocking local numbers.

The chief of the Kwikwetlem First Nation, Ron Giesbrecht, earned $914,219 in the past year, according to the documents.

Giesbrecht, who is also the band’s economic development officer, posted expenses of $16,574.

Councillor Ed Hall, who is also the Kwikwetlem’s

VICTORIA – If the public school teachers’ strike isn’t settled

by September, the B.C. government will use the payroll savings to pay $40 per missed school day to parents of schoolaged children under 13, Finance Minister Mike de Jong said Thursday.

Negotiations with the BC Teachers’ Federation remain stalled after a two-week strike in June that cost the province’s

40,000 public school teachers $12 million a day in salary.

That’s the estimated cost of the support program do Jong said is intended to go to tutoring or daycare for younger children if they can’t go to school. De Jong said older children don’t require as much supervision and have online options to maintain their studies if the labour dispute takes more instructional time away. see PARENTS, page A9

PoMo home to research centre? City is pondering

Port Moody’s position at the end of Burrard Inlet makes it a prime spot for a marine research science centre, a concept that will be investigated at a symposium planned for September.

At Tuesday’s special meeting, council approved funding for a High Technology Park Leadership Synergy Session to investigate the potential for a marine research science centre.

Invitees to the session will include leading figures from various universities and the business sector to discuss community support, finance and marketing for the initiative.

“The idea is to brainstorm as to what a marine park would entail, what type of research that marine park would be doing and how it would be funded,” said Coun. Gerry Nuttall, who is chairing the high-tech park sub-committee of the Economic Development Committee, which is organizing the symposium.

The idea of a marine research centre was floated soon after the sub-committee re-opened discussions last spring on a high-tech park.

“One of the first suggestions was marine technology,” Nuttall said, noting it was Mossom Creek Hatchery co-founder Rod MacVicar’s persuasive presentation on the subject that convinced the sub-committee it was “a really viable opportunity.”

Given the potential for expanded oil shipping out of Burrard Inlet, a research centre studying the surrounding waters is a timely opportunity, Nuttall said, adding the goal is to bring“clean business”to Port Moody.

“We want to develop high-paying jobs that require relatively little space compared to heavy industry,” Nuttall said. PoMo’s location and recreational opportunities will “attract the type of employee the high-tech industry needs, people who like to live close to where they work, with lots of amenities and outdoor opportunities.”

Facilitating the symposium this fall will be John Talbot, a consultant specializing in strategic planning, community and economic development and project management. Talbot has worked throughout B.C., nationally and internationally for more than 30 years. spayne@tricitynews.com

Passion pushes Coquitlam engineer to make... maps

A passion for the outdoors and a love of hiking and exploration, as well as a handy first career in electronics engineering, are coming together for Coquitlam resident — and professional freelance map maker — Steve Chapman.

Now the self-taught cartographer is using his skills to benefit two local organizations.

Last year, Chapman volunteered to create the route map for the annual Diez Vista 50 race and he’s also working on updating maps for Coquitlam Search and Rescue, where he’s currently a memberin-training.

“I’ve always been hiking and reading maps, every since I was in my mid-teens,” said Chapman, who grew up in Birmingham, England.

“So I’m pretty familiar with how they work and what should be in a map.”

Steve Chapman on the creation of his first map for Indian Arm Explorer, which involved some 200 km of on-the-ground research ground, with its mix of analyzing data, creative, out-of-the-box thinking and adapting to new technology, have served him well in his mapmaking venture.

Chapman started in the map business about five years ago with a company that created digital outdoor guidebooks. The first product, Indian Arm Explorer, covered Eagle Mountain, Buntzen Lake and Seymour, with a map and software that plotted a route based on a user’s planned starting and end points.

data requires on-theground research, and plenty of it.

“I did all these [trails] myself pretty much,” Chapman said, noting it likely involved more than 200 km of hiking.

“Some of it was pretty gnarly stuff.”

Michael Coyle said team members have been making their own maps for years but Chapman’s skills add a professional element.

“Because he deals with customers who have a wide variety of needs, he brings a very broad perspective to how to address the particular requirements of a search and rescue team like ours. He has suggested some much-needed improvements that I think will make a big difference for us,”Coyle said.

And it’s not just Chapman’s map-making skills that are making a change for SAR. Chapman’s hiking hobby has recently turned into trail and ultra-marathon running, and he’d hoped to register for the Diez Vista 50 race but, when it filled up within an hour, he decided to volunteer instead.

“I saw they didn’t have a decent map, so I contacted the race director...

and she was interested in getting a map done,” Chapman said. He also approached his fellow SAR members and suggested they volunteer on the race route to provide first aid.

The partnership worked so well that the Diez Vista 50 will now be an annual fundraiser for Coquitlam SAR. Chapman isn’t only crafting local maps. Some recent projects include a tall map showcasing Okanagan wineries, a project for the government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and a Squamish-area hiking map.

Chapman said he likes the fact that every map is different and that he never knows just where it’s going to lead.

“I just like to get out on the trail and explore places I haven’t been before.”

Two Tri-City MLAs say they want to have a designated Terry Fox Day in B.C. But whether it will land on a provincial stat

holiday is still unknown at this time.

Liberal MLA Linda Reimer (Port MoodyCoquitlam) says she has been working on the proposal for several months and has been in touch with the Fox fam-

ily to have a permanent day in B.C., possibly on the annual Terry Fox Run day that happens in midSeptember.

Eventually, the special committee of the whole meeting resulted in a clear direction to staff: • create area-specific zones for Ioco, Moody Centre and Glenayre; • analyze 10 potential changes to the RS1 zone; • and report back with results at the Sept. 9 council meeting.

“Staff has been given direction from council to take the items we’ve identified and they’re going to develop a consultation process to talk to residents about that,” said Coun. Diana Dilworth, who chaired the committee of the whole meeting.

Potential changes to the zoning bylaw include: • including all basements (finished or unfinished) in floor area ratio (FAR) calculations; • including garages and carports in FAR calculations; • limiting podium height (regardless of slope) to no higher than 0.5 m above grade (a podium will be defined as any structure, such as exposed foundation walls, columns, stilts, retaining walls, fill or other means of elevating a building

above grade); • limiting the height of retaining walls that are required for house construction to a maximum of eight feet; • measuring the full height of a building with a peaked roof to the top of the peak and capping it at a maximum of 34.5 feet; • counting doubleheight/lofted entrances as twice the floor area in FAR calculations.

• limiting the eave height to that of the existing or previous house on the lot based on measurements from sea level; • and adopting a new grade calculation based on the average of the lowest elevation of the front and rear of the property.

Staff will also review the potential to increase

front and rear yard setbacks and provide options to address the problem of blocked view corridors.

Tuesday’s discussion focused mainly on the building of mega homes in the Ioco corridor, with council and staff expected to focus on that area as a priority.

City manager Kevin Ramsay said staff will need additional resources for the public consultation process and to complete the work in an expedited fashion.

Once area-specific zones are created for Ioco, Moody Centre and Glenayre, staff will be investigating other neighbourhoods as well, including Coronation Park, Noons Creek, Westport and College Park. spayne@tricitynews.com

Landlord vows to sue PoCo over $12,000 fee

A Port Coquitlam homeowner said he intends to sue the municipality after his appeal of a $12,000 controlled substance property declaration was denied by council on Monday.

Harvey Douglas, who owns a Mary Hill Road home with his two sons, told The Tri-City News on Wednesday that he is being unfairly penalized. He said there is no evidence the home he rented out was used for the production or sale of drugs and that the charge imposed on him should be waived. “I am going to take them to court,� he said. “This is unjust and uncalled for. It really isn’t fair.�

Douglas and his sons, Rob and Chris Douglas, purchased the home as an investment property more than a year ago and rented it out. According to Douglas, the tenant was a nice person who was easy to get in touch with and always paid the bills on time.

According to the Coquitlam RCMP, however, the tenant was a prolific offender with a history of interactions with police. In January Mounties raided the home, finding knives, bear spray, the magazine for a Glock handgun and a small amount of drugs.

Investigators said they believe some drugs were flushed down the toilet in the 18-minute period between the time officers arrived on the scene and

Police did not lay charges against the tenant but a PoCo city staff report said there was enough evidence to indicate that drug dealing had been taking place on the property. A do-notoccupy order was issued and the owners were charged $12,000, a fee the city said is required to recover the costs of inspection and staff time.

Typically, the fee applies to homes that have been used as grow ops and require extensive repairs and renovation — as well as testing and city inspections — to make them habitable again.

Douglas said he and his sons have already spent a considerable amount of money repairing the home after the police raid.

Floor boards had to be replaced, an atmosphere test was conducted and the electrical and plumbing systems had to be upgraded, he said.

that during the three months the property was boarded up under the do-not-occupy order, the home was broken into and most of the copper piping was stolen.

The city’s $12,000 charge is an additional hardship he said he cannot afford. “We racked up an enormous bill,� he said. “We are up to $25,000, which could easily bankrupt a person.�

But during Monday night’s meeting, council voted against an appeal that would have waived the $12,000 charge.

Mayor Greg Moore said that the city needs to be consistent with how it applies its bylaws while Coun. Darrell Penner said responsibility for what went on at the property rests with the homeowner. “I am a landlord and we do extensive background checks,� Penner said at the time. “It’s part of the due diligence.�

Douglas acknowledges that illegal activity

may have taken place at the home but notes that none of the residents have every been charged.

But PoCo’s bylaw services manager, Dan Scoones, said whether police pursue a person criminally has no bearing on the city’s actions against a property. He estimated that in 90% of cases where a home has been deemed a controlled substance property, police have not laid charges against the residents. “The civil standard for proof is much less onerous,â€? he said. “Just because‌ there is a decision not to push criminal charges doesn’t mean the thing didn’t happen.â€?

He noted that police tie charges to a particular person while the city’s focus is only on a nuisance property. For example, if the city receives a noise complaint, it does not need to determine which person in the home is responsible before laying a fine.

He also disagreed with Douglas’ assertion that there was no evidence of drug trafficking at the property. “The evidence was there that it was used for trafficking,� he said. “That is what triggered the declaration.�

Police seek public’s help in locating two missing men

A cyclist was struck on the Mary Hill bypass, north of Kingsway Avenue in Port Coquitlam, at around midnight on July 30. Police are now looking for the driver that left the cyclist unconscious.

Suspect sought in serious hit and run Police issued a plea yesterday for the driver who struck a cyclist in Port Coquitlam this week to come forward.

The hit-and-run happened just before midnight on July 30 on the Mary Hill bypass, just north of Kingsway Avenue. The cyclist suffered serious injuries and was rushed unconscious to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, where Coquitlam RCMP on Thursday afternoon held a press conference with

his family to ask for the public’s help.

Mounties believe the cyclist was riding east on the shoulder and was hit from behind by a larger Toyota vehicle such as a truck or an SUV. Investigators also found a black plastic passenger side mirror housing from the scene, which they feel may be from the Toyota.

“We are urging the driver to do the right thing by coming forward and telling us what happened,” Coquitlam

RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said. “The cyclist who is seriously injured has a wife and two kids and they deserve to know how and why it happened.”

• Anyone with information about the vehicle involved in the collision is asked to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550, quoting file number 2014-21316.

Coquitlam RCMP are searching for Shane Metcalfe, who was reported as an unauthorized absence from the Forensic Psychiatric Institute on Wednesday.

Metcalfe is described as a 44-year-old Caucasian man with green eyes and short, light brown hair that is unkempt. He is 5’7” tall and 195 lb., and was last seen wearing a pale collared t-shirt, black shorts and black running shoes.

Anyone who sees Metcalfe is advised not to approach him but to report the sighting immediately by calling 911.

Meanwhile, police are also searching for a man who went missing from the Cottonwood Lodge on the Riverview Hospital grounds.

Amator DeTanza was last seen by staff around 9 a.m. on Tuesday. He’s described as a Hispanic man with short black hair and brown eyes. He is 6’2” tall and weighs 180 lbs., and was last seen wearing a dark grey plaid shirt and blue jeans.

Police are cautioning that DeTanza suffers from a mental disorder and should not be ap-

proached.

A Coquitlam man who went missing nearly a month ago has been found dead.

Coquitlam RCMP confirmed Thursday morning that human

remains found in a wooded area near Plateau Boulevard and Sugarpine Court on Monday were those of Nicola Candeloro.

The 44-year-old father of four had left his Westwood Plateau home on the morning of July 3 to go for a walk in the Eagle Mountain area.

He was spotted later that afternoon near the playing fields and Coquitlam Search and Rescue was brought in to help with the search. Crews covered a large wilderness area on Eagle Mountain throughout the following weekend after he was reported missing but did not find him.

Police said foul play has been ruled out in Candeloro’s death and the BC Coroners Service is handling the file.

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart earned $128,987 last year while councillors earned $56,139 to govern a population of about 130,000.

The city’s highest-paid staff members earned just over $200,000.

In Port Coquitlam, a city of about 58,000, Mayor Greg Moore (who also chairs the Metro Vancouver board, for which he earned $71,000 last year) earned $88,024 while council members took in $34,151 apiece.

The results of the second quarter for the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver are in and the city’s share is about the same as it was last year.

The United Boulevard facility — which is owned by Great Canadian Gaming Corp. and was rebranded from Boulevard Casino last December — paid Coquitlam $1.63 million as the city’s 10% share of net proceeds.

That’s just slightly less than April to June 2013, when the Boulevard Casino paid $1.69 million to the city.

Hard Rock’s first full quarter this year was also on par for the same period last year, bringing in $1.5 million for Coquitlam, which divvies the money up between capital projects and community grants.

This past spring, the city handed out $112,395 in Spirit of Coquitlam grants to 18 organizations. Among the big winners were the Coquitlam Farmers’ Market, Community Volunteer Services for Seniors and Children of the Street Society.

SD43 CUPE walkout Thurs.

Unionized staff with School District 43 held a short walkout Thursday morning outside the district maintenance yard in Port Coquitlam to protest the layoff of seven tradespeople last month.

Dave Ginter, president of CUPE Local 561, which represents SD43 support staff, said seven people were laid off — two painters, an electrician, a carpenter, a delivery person and a grounds worker — on July 1.

t shouldn’t come as a great surprise that a recent ICBC survey found many parents are passing along poor driving habits to their teenagers.

What is less expected is that only about a third of them seem to be aware of the impact their bad behaviour is having.

Whether it’s speeding, failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign or red light, or not properly concentrating on the complex task of navigating urban streets, for some, the rules of the road tend to grow a little hazy over the years. And the more comfortable we get behind the wheel, the more corners we tend to cut.

But allowing teens to start out with bad habits passed down, even inadvertently, is like setting them up to fail.

So while they’re watching to make sure their children learn to follow road regs, parents with years behind the wheel would do well to ask whether they could do better — and practise what they preach.

‘Roughing it’ isn’t all it’s cracked up to be AS I SEE IT Nick Greenizan

’ve always considered myself to be an outdoorsy person. I grew up camping every summer and fished often with my dad and grandpa. I know how to set up a tent, I’ve gutted a fish once or twice and I know the perfect ratio of chocolate to marshmallow when making s’mores. (The trick: extra of both.)

I was a Cub Scout, dammit.

But as I’ve grown older, I fear I’ve become, well, a little soft. A little too accustomed to the comforts of the indoors — where there are TVs and king-sized beds and refrigerators, rather than coolers that require constant refilling with ice.

This weakening resolve for the woods is nevermore apparent than during my annual camping trip/softball tournament in the Okanagan. Now, we aren’t exactly“roughing it”on this trip. The campsite is next to the ball

field rather than deep in the bush, it’s fully serviced with flush toilets and a supermarket is no more than five minutes away. Our cellphones still get reception. There’s even free WiFi, for crying out loud.

Still, I have my issues.

For starters, I am — no matter how much I plan ahead — usually unprepared once I get there.

Hey, can somebody gimme a hand with this tent?

I forgot my axe, can I borrow yours for a minute?

Did anyone remember to bring bug spray?

Where’d I put those tent pegs?

Seriously, somebody give me a hand with this tent.

Such feelings are only magnified in comparison to the rest of my friends, who, like me, started out tenting but have since upgraded to much larger — and much more air-conditioned — trailers.

Feelings of inadequacy, maybe envy, aside, ever the burly outdoorsman, I have always re-

nounced such creature comforts to stick with my trusty tent. I stay closer to nature this way, I tell myself, along with other lies such as“It’s not that hot in here when the sun comes up at 6:30 in the morning”and“Sleeping this close to the ground isn’t that bad, really.”

Mostly, however, I’ve just never had the extra cash — nor the inclination to spend it — to buy an RV of my own.

I do have a fantastic tent, as far as tents go.

It’s big and roomy and stays dry in even the worst of conditions. I even have a decent air mattress, which is about the only thing that separates me from a hibernating bear.

But organization is a problem, especially for an obsessive-compulsive-type like me, who insists everything be in its right place, even in a tent.

Food, too — specifically, keeping it cold — becomes an issue, as anyone who has ever camped for more than a few days at a time well knows.

So there I was on the fourth day of our expedition standing in front of my small barbecue,

cooking a defrosted-for-far-too-long steak that had spend the previous few days sitting under an ice block, inside a cooler which itself had been sitting inside the door of a too-hot tent.

And as I weighed the pros and cons of starvation versus food poisoning, the door of my friend’s air-conditioned 26-foot trailer swung open and out he walked with a pizza.

A pizza!

“Oh, it’s warmer out here than I thought,”he said, as sweat beaded on my ever-furrowing brow just a few feet away.

Right there, on the spot, I decided I was buying a trailer in time for next summer.

No more sleeping at night with four layers of clothes on, only to tear them off in a sweaty panic at 7 a.m. No more accidentally hitting your thumb, rather than the tent peg, with a hammer. No more eating questionable meat from the bottom of a watery cooler.

No, I thought, no more of any of that.

Jeez, maybe I really am getting soft.

FACE TO FACE: Are Canada’s stances on international conflicts laudatory or lame?

Even Americans praise Harper T

here is violent conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to exercise his geopolitical muscle in Ukraine.

Violence has erupted in Libya.

The Taliban are regaining strength in Afghanistan. And in Iraq, jihadist fighters continue to cause angst.

Now, more than ever, the world needs its western leaders to stand up for human rights, democracy and decency.

Unfortunately, in the United States, President Barack Obama’s muted response to all these tragedies has usurped his country’s role as an international peacemaker.

But in Canada, while we admittedly yield little international influence, it’s good to see Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird standing up for Canadian values.

Over the past several weeks, the Conservative government has been resolute in its unconditional support for Israel. Minister Baird has put out regular statements chiding the “international terrorist group Hamas” for its actions.

As for Russia, it could be argued that no other world leader has come close to matching Harper’s verbal lashings of Putin. Last weekend, Harper took the unusual step of pub-

lishing an op-ed in The Globe and Mail calling Russian separatists — who allegedly shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 — an“extension of the Russian state.”

The Harper government’s principled positions are even being noticed south of the border.

Popular American conservative radio host Mark Levin recently raved about Harper’s foreign policy on his talk show. My colleague opposite, of course, is ranting about how a Tea party talk show host is praising the Harperites. But, in this case, the praise is justified regardless of the source.

Hamas is recognized as an international terrorist group that has for years, inflicted terror on the people of Israel. And, as explained

by Harper, Russia is persisting with “the politics of intimidation and aggression.” These things need to be said, action needs to be taken.

There’s no benefit to sitting on the fence or sugarcoating the truth.

In the summer of 2011, Harper talked about a new, liberated global vision for Canada, one where we no longer try “to please every dictator with a vote at the United Nations.”

The Harper government has delivered: We now do what is best for Canada, our values and our future.

Promise made and, thank goodness, promise kept.

nder Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, Canada’s foreign policy has long been going south — literally and figuratively.

Recently, conservative U.S. talk show host Mark Levin interviewed Canada’s minister of foreign affairs, John Baird, about Gaza and the Middle East. Levin is a right-wing conspiracy purveyor who harangues his radio audience of up to eight million with indisputable truths from his bubble of bile, such as: U.S. President Barack Obama is a Marxist who conspired to destroy the American economy in order to reconfigure the U.S. to his socialist specifications.

In short, Levin is one of that cadre of hysterical U.S. right-wing shock jocks who sell fear, conspiracy and U.S. exceptionalism. And this is the guy who’s impressed by Canada’s swashbuckling foreign policy?Yikes.

After Minister Baird had finished his “Israelis good, Palestinians bad” analysis of the current Gaza and larger Middle East crisis, Levin lauded Baird (and Canada) for being decisive and principled. After the interview, Levin rhapsodized about Mr. Baird to his Tea Party audience, saying: “Imagine somebody of this mindset, these principles, this belief system,

being in our Oval Office — instead of some lightweight cheap-shot artist.”

If right-wing crazies like Mark Levin think Canada’s minister of foreign affairs embodies the foreign policies they would want a U.S. president to adopt, we Canadians should have a frank chat with Mr. Baird.

Because it’s one thing to accept Canada’s trying to fight above its weight class or to think we’re restoring Canada to past greatness by taking “principled stands,” but it’s quite another to legitimize and beguile the U.S. lunatic right with simple pugnacious pronouncements about complex international crises.

Conservatives are squandering Canada’s internationally respected moral authority as a voice for international peace, international law and multilateral action. They have replaced it with a simplistic, un–Canadian foreign policy of picking sides and name calling; with the blunt swagger of a low-self-esteem lightweight with a big brother.

So while Mark Levin gushes over Minister Baird, Lester B. Pearson spins in his peacekeeping grave.

Andy, had my argument the same level of nuance as Conservative foreign policy, I would probably just call you a terrorist thug and threaten to get my big brother to beat you up.

shelter animals need love and, crucially, new homes The Editor, My name is Elyse and I am 11 years old. I want to collect money to spend on the animals at the Coquitlam animal shelter.

All the dogs do is sit in there kennels, get walks and wait to be welcomed into a loving home. The cats, on the other hand, play and are groomed, pet and cuddled but once again are still waiting to be welcomed into a forever home.

There are cats there that have been there for months. There are bunnies, too, sometimes even birds.

The problem is the shelter needs more money to give them a

I want to raise at least $500 for the shelter to get the animals more supplies to keep the animals happy and not so

bored stuck in their kennels, cages, rooms and pens. I also want to help the shelter with vet payments and a happier life for everyone.

Not only will the animals be happier but the volunteers and employees will love knowing how spoiled the animals are.

But at the end of the day, it is not only important that the animals are happy at the shelter but are also getting adopted and seen and watched and loved.

I don’t know exactly what I am going to do to raise money but any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

I read with interest Tracy Riddell’s excellent letter and I agree. I live in Vancouver and have lobbied the city to ban fireworks on Halloween — to no avail. My dog is very frightened. There is no context for animals when the skies suddenly start banging. Confused and frightened wildlife are definitely at risk.

There must be a better way to celebrate without harm to pets and wildlife.

WWI 100th to be marked in PoMo Veterans to be honoured at PM Legion cenotaph

A local veterans’ advocate will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War by hosting an all-night vigil at the Port Moody cenotaph on Sunday.

And the public is welcome to honour the eve of the war in its centennial year by lighting a small candle or placing flowers at the base.

As well, the ship’s bell from the HMCS Chilliwack, a corvette that served in the north Atlantic Ocean during

the Second World War, will be rung every hour during the vigil.

Guy Black, a Port Moody resident who recently organized the Occupy the Trench weekend at the Port Moody Station Museum, will be at the cenotaph from dusk to dawn — about 8 p.m. Sunday to 11 a.m.

Monday.

At around 8:30 p.m., a bugler from the BC Regiment will also play “The Last Post,” the tune used at British Commonwealth military funerals and ceremonies commemorating those who have been killed in war.

Dressed in authentic war uniforms and holding old rifles, Black will be joined by fellow

Occupy the Trench participants Cary Price and Markus Fahrner — a retired British Army officer — to stand guard at the cenotaph. They will have rotating shifts every 20 minutes throughout the night.

“We don’t want to let that date slip by,” Black said, referring to Aug. 4, 1914. “It means too much.”

One hundred years ago on a Monday, Germany invaded Belgium to outflank the French army; in turn, the United Kingdom declared war on Germany.

This Matrix-like conundrum is a good one to have. Take the safer route (black key) if you’d rather ease off on harnessing the gargantuan horsepower of the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. It’s the most powerful production Chrysler V8, as well as the most powerful production muscle car to date, so it needs to be treated with respect.

But then again, the red key will allow me to tame this muscled feline one shift at a time, whether through the 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic.

Looks like the decision has been made for me. Red key is sitting pretty in the centre console. And it’s in track mode.

have access to all 707 horsepower and I’m at the Portland International Raceway. I’d say this will be a heavenly day.

Read about electric cars before it’s too late This story could be obsolete in a month as automakers add electrification to existing models and introduce all new models, at an incredible rate.

The market for electric cars or plug-in hybrids is very small but it is growing. The success of Tesla’s Model S has shot its stock price into the stratosphere, as investors bet on that company’s emergence as the electric car and technology leader.

The stock price should really reflect the cars sold, as Tesla can only make about 20,000 to 25,000 cars annually for a worldwide market.

The Market: Green Car Report recently published a sales report on all electrics sold in Canada for the first six months of the year.

The list of vehicles sold is compiled from companies’ self-reporting but Ford’s data is missing. This Green Car Report estimates that Ford’s numbers will push overall electric sales to 2,200 for the first half of the year, a 50% improvement over a year ago. What we do get is a good snapshot of the

market. With only 1,941 electrics officially counted, amounts to only 0.21 percent of the overall Canadian marketplace. (Canadians are on track to buy almost 1.7 million vehicles this year) So these are tiny but important numbers and the trend is higher. The clear winner isn’t the Tesla (above right) at all; in fact it is in third place behind the Chevy Volt and Nissan LEAF. Chevy sold 831 Volts up to July with Nissan selling 462 LEAFs and Tesla moving 290 Model S cars. The Smart Full Electric Drive comes in fourth with 163 cars sold and in its first month of sales (June) the BMW i3 looks good with 50 units sold.

Not all electric cars are the same: What many people don’t realize is the complexity of the electric car market. I look

at it this way, if the car can be plugged into an outlet; it is at least partially electrified. There are pure electric cars like the Nissan LEAF, Tesla Model S, Smart Electric, Mitsubishi i-MiEV and BMW’s new i3 – all of these use just electricity to propel the car. Then there are electric cars that have an onboard generator, should the range of the electric pack limit driver’s intentions. The Chevy Volt, Cadillac ELR, the Toyota Prius Plug-In and the BMW i3 are, or can be equipped, with a gasoline engine to

either drive the wheels or charge the battery. This is one area where the Chevy Volt wins. With roughly a 65 km range on pure electricity and a small generator on board to extend the range indefinitely, this car makes a lot of sense. This is why the BMW i3 has an optional generator for $3,000 to extend the range of that model. But if the buyer chooses this option, the range of pure electric drive is limited because of the added weight of the car.

Electric car buyers need to know if they can live with

the limits of the electric cars range or want the flexibility to extend the range with an on-board generator.

What is still to come?: We are living in interesting times. More and more electric cars are being added, not to meet the demand but to meet regulatory requirements. For the model year 2016, the United States has a new cooperate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard that has each manufacturer trying to hit 35.5 mpg average across their fleet, including small trucks. This isn’t doable

with the current internal combustion engine technology, so these manufacturers are looking to electrification as the answer. Even though more and more electric versions will arrive, don’t expect them to sell. In fact, most car companies don’t expect them to sell at all; they just want the mpg credit towards the new regulations. This might sound cynical but watch how many electric cars will arrive, especially for the 2016 model year, and how many you will actually see on the road. Most are built at a loss, to offset thirstier, gas-loving machines.

Verdict: Even though electric car sales are very small and many new models will go unnoticed, the trend to electrification is here. With markets like China mandating a percentage of electric cars to offset its horrific pollution, will help move the numbers of electric vehicles worldwide. This, along with steady adoption rates here

in North America will help promote better charging infrastructure. Another factor is the price to own an electric car. The Smart Electric is priced at $27,000 making it the least expensive full electric car. With Nissan hacking its price on the LEAF to just over $31,000 and the Volt starting at roughly $35,000, these cars are more affordable than ever. I think the BMW i3 is very attractive for $45,000 because it is a luxury brand at an attainable price. The real showstopper will be the Tesla Model III that they hope to sell for US$35,000 with more than 400km of electric range when it is introduced in 2017.

Even though Tesla has the sex appeal going right now, don’t count out the other mainstream manufacturers with decades, if not centuries of auto making knowhow, to take on the challenge. zack.spencer @drivewaybc.ca

The Knights of Columbus (BC) Charity Foundation had a chivalrous act last month when it donated $8,050 to the maternity ward at Royal Columbian Hospital, which also serves the Tri-Cities.

The cash will be used to buy a phototherapy light to help treat jaundice in newborns at RCH.

Relatively new pesticides a growing concern They can harm the birds & the bees

O

ver the past year, there have been a number of reports regarding the potential for a relatively new group of pesticides, neonicotinoids, to have deleterious impacts on honey bees and other pollinators. More recent research indicates the impacts of these pesticides are more widespread and sometimes result in the death of birds.

Neonicotinoids, also called neonics, were first developed about 20 years ago. In the past decade, their use has increased substantially and they have now become the most widely-used insecticides in the world.

The most commonly used neonicotinoids are imidacloprid, acetamiprid, thiacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam. Other neonicotinoids include dinotefuran, nitenpyram and nithiazine. If you use any type of insecticide in your home or garden you may want to check the labels for these ingredients. Imidacloprid was first registered for use in Canada in 1995; neonicotinoids are now approved for a wide variety of food crops.

All new pesticides undergo mandatory testing to demonstrate that impacts on non-target species are minimal.

Each country has its own set of regulations and a process that must be followed. Shockingly, it now appears the evaluation processes for neonicotinoids have been lax. In some cases, the tests performed were inadequate; in other cases,

In retrospect, it is appalling that neonicotinoids have been approved in so many developed countries despite early scientific evidence that suggested problems.

Recent research is now providing convincing proof of the harm caused by them.

Neonicotinoids are water-soluble chemicals that can persist in soil for three or more years.

It is estimated about 90% of the insecticide applied ends up in the soil and neonicotinoids are readily absorbed by plants. Because of the persistence of these insecticides in the environment, the potential for contamination of agricultural fields and the waterways that drain them is huge, and they’re quite toxic for aquatic insects. In California, 89% of the streams tested in 2012 had detectable concentrations of imidacloprid and 19% of these streams exceeded EPA guidelines.

The most common use of neonicotinoids is for treating seeds prior to planting but they are

also used as sprays to treat, for example, fruit trees. Initial studies of the first neonicotinoid, imidacloprid, showed some evidence of bird and mammalian toxicity.

There may have been a tendency to overlook such problems because the toxicity of imidacloprid was less than many of the older pesticides it replaced (such as the organophosphates and carbamates). But it appears adequate field studies were not undertaken and there was too heavy a reliance on limited laboratory studies. It is quite possible there was a tendency for the agricultural industry to overlook the initial findings and for decision-makers in government to ignore them.

Because neonicotinoids are designed to kill insects, it is, perhaps, not surprising there could be impacts on bees. What may have not been realized was that treated seeds in neonicotinoidsoaked soil could grow into a plant with potentially harmful amounts of insecticides in its pollen and nectar.

fields. Research has shown that larger birds would have to eat only five imidacloprid-treated corn seeds or six beet seeds to receive a dose that would kill half of them.

A study recently completed in Holland has shown a decrease in the populations of several species of birds that prey mainly on insects. On average, bird populations decreased by 3.5% annually in areas where concentrations of imidacloprid in surface waters exceeded 20 nanograms per litre (such concentrations were reached or exceeded in many agricultural areas). In this study, the authors did not distinguish between direct toxic impacts on birds or simply the loss of insect prey due to pesticide use.

tributing to the decline of grassland birds throughout North America.

Once pesticides are widely applied, it typically doesn’t take too long before target insects begin to develop resistance. Thus, it should not have come as a surprise when, after only three years of use, the Colorado potato beetle showed a 100-fold increase in resistance to imidacloprid. Such resistance often results in spiralling applications of even higher concentrations of the pesticide in futile efforts to control the target insect pest.

Given the now undeniably deleterious impacts on pollinators and wildlife in general, the continued use of neonicotinoids is posing unacceptable environmental risks.

withdrawn until methods can be developed for their application that do not pose risks to non-target species.

In Europe, some uses of neonicotinoids have now been suspended. In Canada, the government has taken no action but is, apparently, studying the problem.

Thus, there is speculation these pesticides are contributing to collapse of their colonies.

Impacts such as these would not be revealed in typical laboratory tests. In a field study conducted in 2012, exposure of bumblebees to relatively low concentrations of imidacloprid resulted in decreased nest growth and an 85% drop in queen production.

Production of queens is especially critical for bumblebees since it is only the queens that overwinter and establish new colonies in the spring.

Investing in the real estate market a focus for buyers

In Vancouver’s thriving real estate market, buyers are finding innovative ways to purchase their dream home. One of them is investing in a property in a growing area, allowing the original buyer to either rent out the home or sell it at a premium as the neighbourhood becomes more popular.

“With a growing population and increasingly high demand for real estate, the reality of what’s affordable and the dream

location don’t always match,” says Shaadi Faris, vice-president of Intergulf Development Group. “Purchasing an affordable investment property in an emerging area is a means for more first-time buyers to get a leg-up in the market and work towards buying their ideal home in a more desirable location sooner.”

He cites the growing boom in real estate opportunities in Burnaby’s Metrotown as an example of buyers choosing to purchase in a vibrant area close to transit and education that

will get them a return on their investment when they choose to sell or rent out the property.

“Buyers are becoming very savvy,” he says. “They want to know the price per square foot, what the strata fees are.

They want to know what the opportunities are to build their investment.”

However, Faris points out that the amenities and features of a home can’t be ignored.

“People have to actually want to live there,” he says.

Faris has seen a difference in the kind of buyer as well.

“It’s a more mature condo market now,” he says. “People are more sophisticated in understanding the lingo and the product, and it’s imperative that there’s no wasted space, because every cent counts. Buyers are looking with that level of detail now; it’s not always an emotional purchase. There’s too much on the line.”

Intergulf has seen an increase in just such an interested buyer at their project The Park Metrotown, which is located right in the heart of the area and will have the access to transit and education at BCIT and SFU that buyers are looking for.

“People know that it’s a smart place to invest,” Faris says.

Bellies on the ropes as A’s grab series lead Club could close out series tonight at home after win on Wednesday

The Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs are one game away from punching their ticket to the Minto Cup. The club defeated the New Westminster Salmonbellies 7-4 on hostile turf Wednesday night, meaning the A’s could wrap up the series when it moves back to Coquitlam tonight.

We d n e s d ay ’ s w i n was not easy for the Adanacs.

The squad struggled in the first period, allowing the home team to go up 3-1 with a pair of goals from the Bellies’ Josh Byrne and a single from Anthony Malcolm.

Despite the fact the A’s outshot their opponents, the only Adanac to find the net in the first was Cole Shafer, who buried a pass from line mate Erik Klein at 14:49.

But Coquitlam began to take charge of the game in the second period. Shafer scored his second of the game,

while Jordan Gilles and Tyler Pace helped the team take a 4-3 lead going into the final frame.

An early goal from N ew We s t m i n s t e r ’ s Luke Gillespie tied things up in the second, but the Adanacs continued to pour on the offence, with markers from Wesley Berg, Eli McLaughlin and Evan Wortley.

The Bellies appeared to run out of ways of solving Adanacs net minder Pete Dubenski, who stopped 36 of the 40 shots he faced in the game.

However, finishing the series in Coquitlam on Friday won’t be easy for the A’s, who have yet to win a game in front of their fans. Only New Westminster has won one at home in this series, when they downed Coquitlam in Game 1 on July 23.

Coquitlam is hoping to avoid a repeat of the team’s last home game, a 13-8 loss in Game 5 on Monday in a penalty filled match that led to several game misconducts and a $1,500 fine levied against the Adanacs’ coach. see A’S, page 30

On the boys’ side, Evan Robson managed to find the podium when he placed third in his division.

Team coach Sebastian Fritz said he was happy his association members were rewarded for their hard work in preparation for the B.C. Summer Games.

“We have been training for the better part of a year,” he said. “We were hoping to do well.”

The provincial event is a stepping stone to higher levels of competition, he added. Many people who competed in Nanaimo last week

will likely move on to nationals and even U.S. qualifiers, like one currently being held in San Francisco.

With Olympic-style podium events and a large opening and closing ceremonies, Fritz said the B.C. Summer Games have the feel of a large international event.

“Some can take it as a big shock,” he said. “For the most part, people enjoy what it is like in the big leagues.”

But next week the two organizations are joining forces to cohost the 2014 Lacrosse Nationals, which will be held in both cities between August 4 and 9.

The bad blood sets the stage for an interesting weekend. The Adanacs are expected to take on the Bellies tonight (Friday, Aug. 1) at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.

If Coquitlam cannot close out the series in Game 6, they will return to New Westminster on Sunday for an 8 p.m.

PoCo Saints go marching to a B.C. Provincial Championship Team locks up berth in finals The Port Coquitlam Saints intermediate A squad have locked up a spot in this weekend’s B.C. Provincial Championships after defeating the eighth-place Nanaimo Timbermen in the playoffs.

PoCo dominated the league, finishing eight points ahead of the

second-place Victoria Shamrocks and going 17-1 in the regular season to take 34 points.

The Saints’ stand a good chance of hoisting a banner once the dust settles in Richmond, where the provincials are being held this week. The club, which is coached by Bob Bell, led in goals for with 223 and goals against, with only 111, while recording the least amount of penalty minutes.

She lived in several different cities across Canada, moving with her husband and four children wherever “The Canadian Armed Forces” sent them. She and her husband retired to Summerland in 1977.

She moved to the Belvedere Residence in Coquitlam in 2008 to be closer to her two daughters. She had a great zest for life, living every day to the fullest.
