A

healthy real estate market may sound like a pipe dream to those who have lived in the Okanagan for years, but this is the current scuttlebutt in the development industry.

Crack open a newspaper, listen to the radio, pick up your mail and it’s very clear—development is on the move once more.

From condos to single-family homes, commercial buildings to resorts, the talk, at the very least, feels promising.

“I think there’s a market,” said Kelowna city manager Ron Mattiussi. “…I think we’ve used up some supply and we’re starting to build. The recession has passed and all those things are starting to work for us.”

From the traditional prairie migration to buildout of the university, the tertiary health care model making Kelowna General Hospital a medical mecca to the announcement of the new downtown Innovation Centre and the rapid expansion of the airport, the city manager believes Kelowna will see steady growth moving forward.

Talk to the developers and you’ll hear more of the same.

Rather than zealous, fast-paced moves to slap up condos, they’re dusting the cobwebs off large neighbourhood plans mired in economic collapse and the last Official Community Plan process.

THE MONACO, a twin tower development approved by Kelowna city council last spring, is slated to start construction this fall, although the developer, Premier Pacific Group, has yet to file the necessary paperwork. It is due next week.

Optimistic outlook helps fuel real estate market resurgence “Even historically, when you look back at the height of the market in ’07/08, over 60 per cent of purchasers were Okanagan residents,” said Andrew Gaucher, of G Group Developments.

On July 18, his company released the first lots for a neighbourhood of waterfront bungalows in McKinley Landing targetted at locals. A far cry from the grand resort development originally planned for the property, they’ve designed lots with a maximum 400-square foot lawn and waterfront view where homeowners are restricted to indigenous xeriscape plantings intended to totally renaturalize the hillside within a few years.

Aimed at middle-income earners, G Group is expecting buyers will put out $500,000 to $700,000, once they’ve

“If you drive to the Upper Mission, like the Quarry, 85 per cent of the backyards are empty and they cost a lot to maintain,” said Gaucher, noting McKinley Beach will focus on lakeside barbecues with plenty of parks.

This is the end of the road on several sets of plans, which could see

everything from UBCO to downtown Kelowna, Clifton Road to McKinley Landing built out if buyers catch on.

Melcor Developments owns the swath from Clifton to McKinley and it’s primed to slice it up with the first 40 lots likely to sell in the fall of 2015.

Currently working this project, and Blue Sky at Black Mountain, Melcor was among the lucky few to keep building through the recession years.

“Single-family has always been trickling along,” said Andrew Bruce, Melcor Developments’ regional manager.

“What happened in 2008, I think, was driven mostly by condo development and speculators. I was working for a different development company back then and we were building that kind of product.

“It completely killed the development market for larger three or four-storey, apartment-style buildings because there was just so much inventory out there it was getting tougher and tougher to get your financing.”

Developers switched to townhouses, servicing the same condo buyer, at depressed prices, with less out-of-pocket risk for the company.

Condos have yet to make a comeback.

While The Monaco, a set of towers slated to be built in front of The Daily Courier building downtown, is supposed to begin construction in September, the City of Kelowna has to receive a development permit application for it to get underway; the deadline is next week and the planning department has heard nothing.

Many proposed projects—Lucaya on Sunset Drive, 24 on Bernard Avenue—never materialized. The development permit has now expired on 24 and the project has been scrapped, but appetite for this style of housing is starting to materialize.

house and condo buildout planned for the base of Dilworth, near the end of Enterprise Way, received the thumbs up from council at public hearing this week, while Argus Properties has a development application to start the process for what could be the highest building in the downtown core—a hotel, office and condo complex at Manhattan Point and Sunset Drives. It’s proposed for 27 storeys.

Kelowna city planner Ryan Smith believes next year could be the turning point for condos.

“It’s still to come,” he said. “We’re still soaking up inventory, but I know we’ve certainly had people acquiring land and starting to make the moves.”

Melcor, meanwhile, is part of the new Thomson Flats plan being drafted for the South Mission.

They’re selling the second phase of Blue Sky at Black Mountain and polishing the last touches to launch sales in North Glenmore.

“The demand was so slow through ’08 and ’09, right through to maybe a year ago, I think there’s now just this pent up energy,” said Bruce.

In Black Mountain, they’re selling to Rutland residents who want to move up the hill.

Local Mounties have been pulling dozens of cars off the road over the last month as they target excessive speeders on the new stretch of highway north of Lake Country.

Twenty-six drivers, ranging in ages from 17 to 78, have been handed violation tickets for excessive speeding over the past month.

One driver was even caught travelling more than 70 km/h over the posted 100 km/h speed limit.

“The numbers are concerning to us because it seems that some motorists are essentially trying to shave a few minutes off their drive, when in fact they’re jeopardizing the safety of those around them,” said Kelowna RCMP Const. Kris Clark.

Fifteen of the speeders were travelling 50 to 60 km/h over the speed limit, while five drivers were caught going between 60 and 70 km/h too fast.

Excessive speeding carries a fine of $368 to $483, as well as a mandatory minimum seven-day impound.

According to Clark, the area was patrolled by officers from both Central Okanagan Traffic Services and the Integrated Road Safety Unit.

“When they come forward with numbers like this, then obviously there is a level of concern coming from them. They deal with traffic enforcement 24/7—that’s their job and their mandate.”

Clark said police will continue to keep a close eye on how fast vehicles are going on that segment of highway.

“It’s a well-built

stretch. There’s really no concern about the highway itself, it’s just the behaviours we’re seeing on it,” said Clark.

“Those behaviours

need to be changed.”

“Lesperance is currently bound by two firearm prohibitions and a recognizance order stemming from a previous drug and weapons investigation in November 2013.”

Three Red Scorpions associates were also arrested in the search warrants: Robin Joseph Stewart, 52, faces eight charges; Nicholas David James White, 21, faces six charges and Amber McLeod, 23, faces four charges. Additional charges and arrests may also be forthcoming.

Council was presented with the International Association of Business Communicator’s (IABC) Gold Quill of Excellence Award for the Bernard Avenue Revitalization Community Engagement. Second Quarter Report

Council received an update on City activities during the second quarter of 2014. Highlights include having the highest construction value since 2010, breaking 20,000 e-Subscribers to City updates, launch of the Strong Neighbourhoods project, Wibit opening in City Park and the official opening of Bernard Avenue.

Fascieux Creek habitat restoration

Council approved providing in-kind assistance to the Green Parent team volunteers and School District No. 23 for the restoration of a portion of Fascieux Creek at KLO Middle School. The restoration will help bring the creek back to its predevelopment state and the right-of-way along the creek channel will protect the public from flood risks. Completion of the first phase is expected this fall.

Housing ownership agreements

Council completed first three readings of a bylaw to rescind all existing housing ownership agreements. In 2012, Council decided that there would be no new ownership agreements.

Since then the market has shifted so it is easier to find re-sale stratified dwellings at or below the City’s starter home price of $209,902, eliminating the need for this kind of agreement.

Expanded Allied Health agreement

Council received information about the collaboration between the City and Allied Health (Interior Health Authority) that will help bridge the connection between health care and community programming. The expanded collaboration focuses on the development of five types of health programs and providing a liaison physiotherapist situated at Parkinson Recreation Centre to connect individuals with City programs and services.

Ben Lee Park improvements

Council supported the proposed improvements to the Ben Lee playground to make it more accessible. Staff were directed to apply for the 2014 Enabling Accessibility in Communities grant.

Ellis Street Corridor Plan

Council endorsed the Ellis Street Corridor Plan, which will guide development of the area.

Highlights of the plan include one vehicle and one bike lane in each direction, left turn lanes at various locations, new sidewalks, Urban Braille, mid-block crosswalks, trees and street furniture.

To the editor: I sat and contemplated, last Sunday while enjoying Gyro Beach, on how many younger folks like myself find it very hard to reside in Kelowna as it is an expensive city to live in.

Nice restaurants are overpriced in general and the same goes for golf.

People like myself live day to day at times due to high rent costs and cost of living, bills—many on average make minimum wage and are having trouble making ends meet and staying afloat.

Then comes along Centre of Gravity which although is a very good idea as there is pretty much zero to do in Kelowna outside of festivals.

Centre of Gravity charges an arm and a leg for admittance if you do not know already.

Now, keeping in mind that Kelowna only offers golf and pubs pretty much, these younger folks will pay upwards of $239.95 for the entire weekend for something fun to do.

Modern-day feminism confused with oppression

F

eminism has never looked more complicated.

Tangles born from a combination of laughable commentary in the ever-dodgy world of social media, meeting outrage on those same channels has my poor brain in knots.

Before I use this space to undo my angst, I’ll explain what the cringe-inducing commentary is and where it’s originating from.

Courtesy of a tumblr page titled Women Against Feminism, participants, who in many cases look a lot like the scantily clad tots at the Center of Gravity festival, share pictures of themselves holding write-ups about why they aren’t feminists.

“I don’t need feminism because my boyfriend treats me right” is a popular post. It’s popular because it’s stupid, of course. And the Internet loves stupid.

This is one of my faKathy Michaels vourites, however: “I believe if a man says I’m pretty he’s not saying I’m a piece of meat. It’s a compliment for goodness sake.”

Still idiotic, but there are some interesting nuances worth exploring.

Denouncing compliments isn’t always the best way forward. Realistically, the superficial ones do tend to wane in one’s later years. Even the “compliments” that make their recipients feel threatened and small will ultimately be offered with less frequency

Regardless of the way they’re worded, the general theme of the page is that these women understand feminism to be the advancement of one sex over the other and they’re taking an online stand in opposition.

Of course, feminism at its core has everything to do with equality, which even the most obtuse person should realize isn’t applied evenly.

I mean, sure, in my day-to-day life I don’t see a lot of injustices or incidents where my sex limits my opportunities.

But, do I think my personal experience is the only experience?

Do I think the women I worked with when I lived abroad got the same shake as my male counterparts?

Absolutely not.

So, I happily call myself a feminist for them and the countless other women who don’t have it as easy as I do.

This is really an opportunity to thank Joan of Arc that I don’t live in a vacuum and that my selfishness has boundaries.

It’s also a chance to get all frothy with rage, which is the route many others have chosen. Even some cats.

Seriously, there’s a page where cats mock these women.

A few posts poking fun at the site are amusing, but as with everything online, the avalanche of responses from anonymous writers creates absolute discomfort and muddies the mind. After reading a few dozen, I wanted to

Harper needs to ditch worn-out slogans To the editor: If truth is to prevail, our prime minister needs to acknowledge that Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal has repeatedly said (as did Ismail Haniyeh before him) that his government is willing to accept a Palestinian state based on borders as they existed prior to the 1967 war.

This implies that contrary to the Hamas Charter written a quarter of a century ago, there is no wish on the part of Hamas today to destroy the state of Israel.

I’ve located reliable sources indicating this was Mashaal’s stance each year since he took power in 2004, with one exception. At an exuberant rally in Gaza City in 2012, he was quoted as saying, “Palestine from the river to the sea, from the north to the south, is our land and we will never give up one inch.” However, in 2013, he was back to promoting a twostate solution based on 1967 borders.

In a CBS interview just days ago, Mashaal

reiterated that Hamas was willing to have a state of Palestine coexist with a state of Israel.

He repeatedly said coexistence as nations was what he wanted.

He said it was his position that coexistence was possible with Jews, with Christians, with Arabs, with non-Arabs, with those who agree with him and those who disagree with him, but coexistence with occupiers and settlers was not.

When pressed by the interviewer, Mashaal would not say he would recognize Israel as a Jewish state, but this is nothing new for Palestinian leaders. What he did say is that when Palestinians have a state, it’s Palestinians who will decide their policies.

All this is to say that the prime minister’s often repeated view that Hamas initiated the current conflict because it seeks the destruction of the state of Israel badly needs to be mothballed.

Nor is Hamas to blame for the death and destruction in Gaza, as the prime minister has repeated. It’s Israel that broke the ceasefire declared in 2012, not Hamas. It’s Israel that never met its 2012 promise to lift the siege of Gaza. And it’s Israel that continues the illegal occupation of the West Bank.

The root of the ongoing problem in the Middle East is the siege and occupation, not homemade Hamas rockets that lack any targeting capability. These rockets are fired off in frustration and serve another purpose. As one reporter put it; ‘Who pays attention to Gaza when rockets are not being fired?’

It’s the siege and occupation that Harper needs to focus on as a modern world leader, not sputtering rockets and worn-out slogans that interest no one but Benjamin Netanyahu and conservative U.S. radio hosts.

Making wine a greener enterprise From Bogota, Colombia, to Mexico City, to the wineries of the Okanagan, UBC Okanagan PhD student Camilo Peña has been on a global research journey.

His objective: To better understand and document the relationship between marketing, consumer motivation, and

social and environmental sustainability in agriculture.

His ambitions led him to Quails’ Gate winery in West Kelowna, where he has immersed himself in the day-to-day activities of the winery in order gather information about the extent and impact of sustainable viticul-

ture practices in the Okanagan Valley.

Peña is investigating water use management, chemical and pesticide reduction, soil and fertilizer management, waste management, energy efficiency, and the promotion of bio-diversity.

CAMILO Peña has immersed himself in the day-to-day activities of the winery industry in order gather information about the extent and impact of sustainable viticulture practices in the Okanagan Valley. than 850 in the Okanagan that participated in the first year of the program, says Peña, an interdisciplinary graduate studies PhD student at UBCO. “My research is about understanding what local wineries are doing in terms of sustainability, what products they are using, why, and what impact sustainable practices have in motivating consumers to purchase sustainably grown products, such as organic wine,” said Peña.

iour. “We want to contribute to the development of consumer research knowledge in the area of sustainability and consumer perceptions, which hasn’t been studied much,” he said.

“With this information we may be able to categorize the motives for people in purchasing a sustainable wine or socially responsible wine.”

Long term, Peña’s research may help determine if there is potential for developing a sustainable wine industry in the Okanagan, similar to fair

trade coffee or chocolate.

“It may also serve as a global model for socially responsible wine production. I would be thrilled if my work could help ensure the viability of the Okanagan wine industry over time, benefiting current and future generations in the valley.”

Peña plans to continue his work throughout the fall at Quails’ Gate, focusing on processing, production and marketing.

Over the next year he intends to expand his research to other Okanagan wineries as well.

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small.

I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

This Matrix-like conundrum is a good one to have. Take the safer route (black key) if you’d rather ease off on harnessing the gargantuan horsepower of the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. It’s the most powerful production Chrysler V8, as well as the most powerful production muscle car to date, so it needs to be treated with respect.

But then again, the red key will allow me to tame this muscled feline one shift at a time, whether through the 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic.

Looks like the decision has been made for me. Red key is sitting pretty in the centre console. And it’s in track mode.

have access to all 707 horsepower and I’m at the Portland International Raceway. I’d say this will be a heavenly day.

After receiving a tip, members of the Kelowna RCMP Street Enforcement Team found the 36-year-old Edmonton man at a local campground shortly after 9 p.m.

He was taken into cus-

tody without incident and held for court the following day.

The 36 warrants were out of both B.C. and Alberta, mostly regarding break and enter-related offences.

Kelowna RCMP Const. Kris Clark said there

were no charges laid in Kelowna; however, Mounties suspect the individual likely committed offences here.

“We suspect that he was likely here at least for a few weeks, (but) I don’t have a timeline,” said Clark.

The Vancouver Island Raiders may yet have a say in the matter, but many pundits of junior football are looking at this weekend’s matchup in Langley as a possible preview of the 2014 BCFC championship game.

The Okanagan Sun will visit the rival Rams Saturday night at McLeod Stadium in the first of three regular season meetings between the clubs.

Langley, which defeated the Raiders 44-36 in week one, features a massive offensive line and some explosive talent on both offence and special teams.

With added depth across the board in the off-season, the Sun is considered a stronger, faster team overall—particularly on defence—than the one split two meetings with the Rams last season.

In head coach Shane Beatty’s estimation, it all points to a hard-fought matchup between two B.C. powers.

“Langley is the team to beat this year, they’re physical, fast and explosive,” said Beatty, in his second season as the Sun’s head coach. “We’re an improved team, our

Falcons winding down WCL season With at least another four players expected to be heading to their respective homes or schools this weekend, the Kelowna Falcons will try to make do with a skeleton roster over the final week of the West Coast League season.

Head coach Billy Clontz will have about 15 players at his disposal, as the Falcons visit the Yakima Valley Pippins for a three-game set beginning Friday.

The Falcons will then be back home for the final six games of the 2014 campaign— Kelowna will host the Wenatchee Apple Sox in a three-game series beginning Aug. 5, then will

cap the year with a threegame set at Elks Stadium against the Walla Walla Sweets, Aug. 8 to 10.

As the league’s most travelled team—more than 6,500 kilometres worth—Clontz looks forward to finishing the season in friendly surroundings.

Jamieson Chiefs’ Fastball campers learn skills, recruiting tips final assistant ▼ GAINING EXPERIENCE

Close to 80 aspiring female softball players from across B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan will make Kings Stadium and the Kelowna Curling Club their homes away from home next week.

Hosted by Kelowna product and former NCAA player and coach Joni Frei, the Beyond the White Lines Softball Camp will be held from Aug. 4 to 9.

Instructors and coaches at the six-day camp will feature current and former college coaches, current and former Canadian national team players, and both current and former U.S. college players.

Frei said this year’s event was capped at around 80 entrants, with about a dozen more players on a waiting list.

to Georgia Oct. 1 to 9 for a college prospects tour.

The camp will feature both on-and off-field coaching as well as special activities, including a college recruiting seminar, mental training, skills competition and a Kelowna Falcons’ baseball game.

Nathan Reiter from Pacific Sport Okanagan will also be on hand to conduct fitness testing.

Dylan Jamieson has been named as an assistant captain, joining previously named captain Anthony Ruggiero and assistants Chase Astorino and Brady Mende.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward, who hails from Kamloops, couldn’t be happier about the opportunity.

“I’m really excited and thankful for the opportunity that his hockey club has given me,” says Jamieson. “It’s an honour to be able to be a part of the leadership team that we have this year. I think we have what it takes and can’t wait to get things started.”

I casually consulted with him regarding the logic of what to do with my ugly, dead, weed infested front lawn.

He concurred that digging it all up and replacing it with crush and raised garden beds was brilliant.

Tez and I wasted no time putting plan into action.

However, while doing so I continued to contemplate why North Americans even grow lawns?

What is North America’s fixation with growing lawns?

To me lawns are an illogical fixation that at the end of the day (or summer) costs us a bundle of money, time, water, energy and stress.

All of which would be fine if we actually used our lawns regularly. But we don’t.

For most us the only time we actually spend on our perfectly manicured lawns is when we cut or water it—or cut across the yard to the car.

For folks who truly utilize their lawns by playing on them or sun

However, few of us actually do that. And how much room does one need to suntan?

The most blatant stupidity behind lawns is their total waste of water.

Every year we are made more and more aware of the need to preserve water and not waste it. Yet we illogically continue to grow massive lawns despite the waste and the cost.

The absurd silly cycle of lawn care boggles me the most. We water it, and water it, and water it, watch it grow, then we cut it. And why do we immediately go right back to watering it again?

Well, because we just cut it, and now we want it to grow again. Is any-

one following this bouncing ball?

We usually do nothing with the cut grass. We don’t eat the cut grass.

We don’t smoke it, drink it, roll in it or even make sweaters out of it. A few gardening folks will compost it, but they are rare.

When we do absolutely nothing with the cut grass except leave it where it fell we give it an official sounding term— mulching.

Many Canadians have huge, perfectly green and weed-free lawns thanks to pesticides, herbicides, fungicides…discombobulating since we already have enough opportunity to bombard our bodies with cancers and other inflictions without exposing ourselves needlessly to such known toxins and poisons.

Pesticides are imperative, I suppose, if we are to keep up with the Jones’ and join the Dandelion Phobia.

We fail to acknowledge that in some parts of the world dandelions are grown as a crop. In Canada, the only good dandelion is a dead dandelion.

God forbid that a dandelion should appear on

your lawn. (What is the gestation period of a dandelion. Surely it must be short enough to even make rabbits appear slow).

Short of absurdly dedicated manual labour, or a good dose of pesticides, the only way to rid yourself of dandelions is to move.

Of course, cutting the lawn is yet another mental marvel of our machine-madness. Lawnmowers come in all shapes and sizes and like the quality and size of the dandelion-free lawn, are also part of the neighbourhood prestige.

Many homes now proudly display the latest flashy ‘ride-em’ lawnmowers.

All of which leads me to contemplate the infamous adage about the grass ‘always being greener on the other side of the fence.’ I have a few theories on why that often seems to be the case: a) It’s a fact. The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because the neighbour works his/ her butt off to get it that way b) The doorknob drenches his yard in pesti-

cides and/or fertilizers c) The neighbour can afford to hire a lawn care company d) The neighbour gets up in the middle of the night and spray paints his lawn e) It’s a well manicured and disguised pot operation next door—not a lawn f) It’s not greener, you are just having your senses affected by the neighbour’s use of pesticides or the aforementioned pot g) The neighbour’s lawn is dead and brown— you’re just colour blind h) Who cares?

Now, three years later after many hours of hard work and sweat ripping out the lawns and fulfilling our plan, I hate to admit that my lawn-free front yard has weeds popping up through the crush and dandelions growing in my raised garden beds.

So, when Tez and I ran into the Garden Guru the other day we mentioned our frustration.

Don just grinned and said, “Oh I solved that problem. We put in a synthetic lawn last year.”

April 17, 1950 – July 28, 2014 Marit left us peacefully at home after a brave fight with breast cancer. She was predeceased by her mother Inger, father Eugen (Gene), mother-in-law Cynthia Davies and brother-in-law Eric.

She is survived by her husband Chuck and their two children: Christine Woodcox (Rick) (grandkids Mica, Jorden) and Michael Davies (Alesha) (grandchild Hannah); her brother Kurt (JoAnne) (Tara, Chad) and two sisters: Randi (Dan) (Kelsi) and Rosemarie (Lionel) (Jason, Ryan) also mourn her loss. Condolences to her mother-in-law Gina Larsson and to many relatives in Norway.

Marit was born in Oslo, Norway and came to Canada with her Mom in 1955. Her father Eugen, having arrived earlier, was already carving their niche for their lifetime in Fort St. James, BC. Marit married Chuck Davies in 1969 and their daughter Christine was born in St. John’s Hospital in Vanderhoof.

Son Mike followed two and a half years later in New Westminster, as Chuck attended trade school.

The courageous battle with breast cancer began in 2005, just after a trip to Norway. It was thought at first that with aggressive treatment the battle had been won, but in 2011 the cancer returned. So few are the short months since her hip replacement and now her journey has ended at age 64, after 45 years of marriage.

Marit has been a wonderful wife, mother, Nana and member of our family. She will be dreadfully missed by all who knew and loved her. Rest well Love, and know you are thought of always.

THE Verdon River has cut a gorge more than a half-mile deep through limestone cliffs and is considered one of the most spectacular gorges in Europe. The Verdon Gorge, or Gorges du Verdon, is located near Provence in southeastern France.

We stood on the edge of the precipice, stunned momentarily by a sign we had not anticipated when we arrived for our long-planned plunge into the Gorges du Verdon, the French version of the Grand Canyon near Provence.

In dire terms, the sign warned of hazards

ahead, including a sudden rush of l’eau that could be released from the reservoir up the valley. We were shocked by the thought of having to forgo the hike that had been on our bucket list for a dozen years, 10 miles through what’s considered one of Europe’s most spectacular gorges.

Then we spied the small knots of hikers descending the switchbacks toward the valley floor a half-mile below. The sign warned of dangers,

but it didn’t bar entry.

Truth be told, the sign wasn’t my only reason for misgivings. We had arrived at the gorge by coincidence on Lynda’s 63rd birthday. Although she’s a regular on the YMCA treadmills, the years have left her with an increasingly troublesome hip alternately diagnosed as arthritis and bursitis. It once seized up just before a five-day hike through the English Cotswolds, then fortun-

ately and just as mysteriously vanished after a ride on the broad back of an Icelandic pony during a stop on the flight over. I imagined myself halfway through the hike, stranded miles from help with a hiking partner suffering from boneon-bone pain.

REGIONAL BOARD HIGHLIGHTS – JULY 2014 Proposed Trap and Skeet Shooting Facility The Regional Board believes it’s premature to support a referral application from Front Counter BC for a proposal to develop a trap and skeet shooting facility on Crown Land in the upper Trepanier area. The Central Okanagan Shotgun Sports Club has asked the Provincial agency to approve a 30-year License of Occupation for its plans to develop the facility on a 23.22-hectare parcel of vacant Crown Land. The Regional Board recommends that Front Counter BC not approve the application until such time as a rezoning application for the Crown Land parcel is approved by the Regional District.

Temporary Use Permit for Medical Marijuana The Regional Board has given conditional approval for a Temporary Use Permit for a medical marijuana production facility proposed for Paradise Valley Drive. The proponent has applied for a Federal license to produce medical marijuana from a building that’s being retrofitted on a 4-hectare parcel in the Trepanier area. The property owner is requesting the Permit while seeking a subdivision consolidation with two adjacent properties in order to meet the 8-hectare minimum parcel size required by the Regional District for medical marijuana production. To receive the Permit the applicant must meet a number of conditions including completion of and adherence to recommendations of a Wildfire Risk Assessment Report; addressing how it will impact water in the area and receipt of a license by Health Canada.

Verdon from A26 gion’s hundreds of miles of trails, we chose a section known as the Sentier Martel, in part because it requires no technical skills. Well-broken-in hiking shoes and plentiful water are the most important things to bring.

The trail, which runs from the Chalet de la Maline to the aptly named Point Sublime, showcases the gorge, an artifact of the push-pull of geologic and hydrological forces. Sentier Martel was named after the explorer who probed it for an electric utility intrigued by the hydroelectric possibilities. Although five hydro dams punctuate the course of the river and affect its flow, opponents blocked a proposal to run a transmission line across the valley. The gnarled Verdon River has carved deep undercuts in cliffs that hem it and left bars of gravel beneath others.

Hiking into a canyon, along a river and up out of a tributary valley may seem cut and dried, but the Sentier’s blazes of red and white stripes, first marked in 1928, led us through stretches of variety and occasional thrills. There were broad scree fields where rock cairns required us to cross a slope with our feet slanted at a funhouse angle.

In three segments, the trail disappears into tunnels built for an abandoned hydro project in the middle of the last century. It’s possible to navigate even the longest and dampest of them, stretching nearly a third of a mile, by groping the rock walls.

But a small flashlight or even the dim light of a smartphone helps hikers safely pick a way through the puddles of seepwater and avoid careening into the walls. Several openings cut into the tunnel offer grand vistas of the roiling river.

We ambled the path along the river, pausing for snacks of dried fruit and swigs of water.

We passed and repassed eclectic collections of hikers from Europe and beyond—students, groups with guides, older farts like us.

The pauses gave us time to ponder the sense of urgency we feel in our 60s, wanting to tackle physically challenging adventures while still able.

We have the same inclination for adventure we had in our younger days, but our pace has slowed.

We’re more inclined toward daypacking than overnight backpacking now.

The trick is to not let our minds yield to the growing constraints of age before our bodies require it.

As we exited the tunnels, we encountered hikers coming from the other direction in flip-flops and loafers without so much as a bottle of water, a sign that we must be nearing public access. Sure enough, we rounded a bend and met a parking area.

Our route continued uphill for another mile, ending at a cluster of tables with souvenirs for sale and a parking lot where a van returns hikers to their cars at the start, miles away on a winding

cliff road.
